Binaural masking and sensitivity to interaural delay in the inferior colliculus

The neural code for auditory space depends on sound frequency and head size in an optimal manner

A major cue to the location of a sound source is the interaural time difference (ITD)-the difference in sound arrival time at the two ears. The neural representation of this auditory cue is unresolved. The classic model of ITD coding, dominant for a half-century, posits that the distribution of best ITDs (the ITD evoking a neuron's maximal response) is unimodal and largely within the range of ITDs permitted by head-size. This is often interpreted as a place code for source location. An alternative model, based on neurophysiology in small mammals, posits a bimodal distribution of best ITDs with exquisite sensitivity to ITDs generated by means of relative firing rates between the distributions. Recently, an optimal-coding model was proposed, unifying the disparate features of these two models under the framework of efficient coding by neural populations. The optimal-coding model predicts that distributions of best ITDs depend on head size and sound frequency: for high frequencies and large heads it resembles the classic model, for low frequencies and small head sizes it resembles the bimodal model. The optimal-coding model makes key, yet unobserved, predictions: for many species, including humans, both forms of neural representation are employed, depending on sound frequency. Furthermore, novel representations are predicted for intermediate frequencies. Here, we examine these predictions in neurophysiological data from five mammalian species: macaque, guinea pig, cat, gerbil and kangaroo rat. We present the first evidence supporting these untested predictions, and demonstrate that different representations appear to be employed at different sound frequencies in the same species.

A matter of time: internal delays in binaural processing

As an animal navigates its surroundings, the sounds reaching its two ears change in waveform similarity (interaural correlation) and in time of arrival (interaural time difference, ITD). Humans are exquisitely sensitive to these binaural cues, and it is generally agreed that this sensitivity involves coincidence detectors and internal delays that compensate for external acoustic delays (ITDs). Recent data show an unexpected relationship between the tuning of a neuron to frequency and to ITD, leading to several proposals for sources of internal delay and the neural coding of interaural temporal cues. We review the alternatives, and argue that an understanding of binaural mechanisms requires consideration of sensitivity not only to ITDs, but also to interaural correlation.

Creating a sense of auditory space

Determining the location of a sound source requires the use of binaural hearing--information about a sound at the two ears converges onto neurones in the auditory brainstem to create a binaural representation. The main binaural cue used by many mammals to locate a sound source is the interaural time difference, or ITD. For over 50 years a single model has dominated thinking on how ITDs are processed. The Jeffress model consists of an array of coincidence detectors--binaural neurones that respond maximally to simultaneous input from each ear--innervated by a series of delay lines--axons of varying length from the two ears. The purpose of this arrangement is to create a topographic map of ITD, and hence spatial position in the horizontal plane, from the relative timing of a sound at the two ears. This model appears to be realized in the brain of the barn owl, an auditory specialist, and has been assumed to hold for mammals also. Recent investigations, however, indicate that both the means by which neural tuning for preferred ITD, and the coding strategy used by mammals to determine the location of a sound source, may be very different to barn owls and to the model proposed by Jeffress.

Binaural masking level difference in human binaural interaction components

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of monaural and binaural broadband masking noise on binaural interaction components (BICs) of the human auditory brain stem evoked potentials (ABEPs).

DESIGN

The BICs of the human ABEPs were studied by subtracting the potentials to binaural clicks from the algebraic sum of monaurally evoked potentials to clicks alone or to clicks with ipsilateral monaural or binaural broadband masking noise. Alternating polarity, 11/sec clicks were presented at 65 dB nHL, and noise was presented at 45 dB nHL. Analysis included peak-to-prestimulus baseline amplitudes and latencies of BICs' peaks and troughs from the vertex-mastoid (A) and vertex-neck (Z) channels. In addition, 3-channel Lissajous' trajectory (3-CLT) analysis, estimating the single, centrally located dipole equivalent of surface activity, was performed on data recorded from three orthogonally positioned electrode pairs. 3-CLT measures included apex latency, amplitude, and orientation, as well as planar segment duration, size, shape, and orientation.

RESULTS

All BICs 3-CLTs included five main components (labeled BdI, BdII, BdIII, BeI, and BeII). In general, apex latencies were longer with masking noise. However, BdII and BeI apex latencies were shorter with binaural than with ipsilateral monaural masking noise. Apex amplitude and planar segment size of component BeI, as well as P1 peak amplitude in BICs of the Z-channel records, were larger with binaural than with monaural noise. No significant difference between the monaural and binaural noise conditions was found in durations, shapes, and orientations of planar segments of BICs 3-CLT, nor in peak latency of BICs in the A- and Z-channel records.

CONCLUSIONS

We suggest that these effects on the latency and amplitude of BICs reflect binaural processing in the human brain stem. In particular, the larger amplitudes and shorter latencies of P1 and BeI with binaural than with ipsilateral monaural masking may be associated with the psychophysical effect of binaural masking level difference.

Acoustic features and acoustic changes are represented by different central pathways

The central processing of acoustic stimulus changes can be observed neurophysiologically in the mismatch negativity auditory evoked potential (MMN). Stimuli differing in interaural phase were used to investigate the contributions of the primary and non-primary auditory pathways to the encoding of binaural stimuli and to investigate passively elicited measures of binaural processing in experimental animals. In guinea pigs, the MMN was obtained in response to 1000 Hz tones embedded in white noise (S:N = 2 dB). Using a modified oddball paradigm (that is, two stimuli presented in a series, each with a different probability of occurrence), stimuli were presented binaurally with both the tone and noise in-phase to the two ears (S0N0) as the standard stimulus ans the tone 180 degrees out-of-phase (S(PI)N0) as the deviant stimulus. The MMN, by definition, should occur only in response to a change, or 'mismatch,' between the standard and deviant stimuli. The response to the deviant stimulus in the oddball paradigm was compared to the response to the same stimulus when presented in a series alone. The responses to S0N0 and S(PI)N0 collected in a series alone, termed the intrinsic responses, were also compared. Responses were recorded from two surface epidural electrodes - one at the posterior midline and one over the left temporal lobe. AEPs from these locations have been shown to reflect the activity of primary and non-primary thalamo-cortical pathways respectively. A significant MMN was observed at the midline electrode, but no MMN was observed over the temporal lobe.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
