Relativistic collisional current-filamentation instability and two-stream instability in dense plasma

Universal quantum Otto heat machine based on the Dicke model

In this paper we study a quantum Otto thermal machine where the working substance is composed of N identical qubits coupled to a single mode of a bosonic field, where the atoms and the field interact with a reservoir, as described by the so-called open Dicke model. By controlling the relevant and experimentally accessible parameters of the model we show that it is possible to build a universal quantum heat machine (UQHM) that can function as an engine, refrigerator, heater, or accelerator. The heat and work exchanges are computed taking into account the growth of the number N of atoms as well as the coupling regimes characteristic of the Dicke model for several ratios of temperatures of the two thermal reservoirs. The analysis of quantum features such as entanglement and second-order correlation shows that these quantum resources do not affect either the efficiency or the performance of the UQHM based on the open Dicke model. In addition, we show that the improvement in both efficiency and coefficient of performance of our UQHM occurs for regions around the critical value of the phase transition parameter of the model.

Branching of High-Current Relativistic Electron Beam in Porous Materials

Propagation of high-current relativistic electron beam (REB) in plasma is relevant to many high-energy astrophysical phenomena as well as applications based on high-intensity lasers and charged-particle beams. Here, we report a new regime of beam-plasma interaction arising from REB propagation in medium with fine structures. In this regime, the REB cascades into thin branches with local density a hundred times the initial value and deposits its energy 2 orders of magnitude more efficiently than that in homogeneous plasma, where REB branching does not occur, of similar average density. Such beam branching can be attributed to successive weak scatterings of the beam electrons by the unevenly distributed magnetic fields induced by the local return currents in the skeletons of the porous medium. Results from a model for the excitation conditions and location of the first branching point with respect to the medium and beam parameters agree well with that from pore-resolved particle-in-cell simulations.

Nanoscale Electrostatic Modulation of Mega-Ampere Electron Current in Solid-Density Plasmas

Transport of high-current relativistic electron beams in dense plasmas is of interest in many areas of research. However, so far the mechanism of such beam-plasma interaction is still not well understood due to the appearance of small time- and space-scale effects. Here we identify a new regime of electron beam transport in solid-density plasma, where kinetic effects that develop on small time and space scales play a dominant role. Our three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations show that in this regime the electron beam can evolve into layered short microelectron bunches when collisions are relatively weak. The phenomenon is attributed to a secondary instability, on the space- and timescales of the electron skin depth (tens of nanometers) and few femtoseconds of strong electrostatic modulation of the microelectron current filaments formed by Weibel-like instability of the original electron beam. Analytical analysis on the amplitude, scale length, and excitation condition of the self-generated electrostatic fields is clearly validated by the simulations.

Discrete eigenmodes of filamentation instability in the presence of a q-nonextensive distribution

Discrete eigenmodes of the filamentation instability in a weakly ionized current-driven plasma in the presence of a q-nonextensive electron velocity distribution is investigated. Considering the kinetic theory, Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook collision model, and Lorentz transformation relations, the generalized longitudinal and transverse dielectric permittivities are obtained. Taking into account the long-wavelength limit and diffusion frequency limit, the dispersion relations are obtained. Using the approximation of geometrical optics and linear inhomogeneity of the plasma, the real and imaginary parts of the frequency are discussed in these limits. It is shown that in the long-wavelength limit, when the normalized electron velocity is increased the growth rate of the instability increases. However, when the collision frequency is increased the growth rate of the filamentation instability decreases. In the diffusion frequency limit, results indicate that the effects of the electron velocity and q-nonextensive parameter on the growth rate of the instability are similar. Finally, it is found that when the collision frequency is increased the growth rate of the instability increases in the presence of a q-nonextensive distribution.

Ultrafast optical field-ionized gases-A laboratory platform for studying kinetic plasma instabilities

Kinetic instabilities arising from anisotropic electron velocity distributions are ubiquitous in ionospheric, cosmic, and terrestrial plasmas, yet there are only a handful of experiments that purport to validate their theory. It is known that optical field ionization of atoms using ultrashort laser pulses can generate plasmas with known anisotropic electron velocity distributions. Here, we show that following the ionization but before collisions thermalize the electrons, the plasma undergoes two-stream, filamentation, and Weibel instabilities that isotropize the electron distributions. The polarization-dependent frequency and growth rates of these kinetic instabilities, measured using Thomson scattering of a probe laser, agree well with the kinetic theory and simulations. Thus, we have demonstrated an easily deployable laboratory platform for studying kinetic instabilities in plasmas.

Direct observation of turbulent magnetic fields in hot, dense laser produced plasmas

Turbulence in fluids is a ubiquitous, fascinating, and complex natural phenomenon that is not yet fully understood. Unraveling turbulence in high density, high temperature plasmas is an even bigger challenge because of the importance of electromagnetic forces and the typically violent environments. Fascinating and novel behavior of hot dense matter has so far been only indirectly inferred because of the enormous difficulties of making observations on such matter. Here, we present direct evidence of turbulence in giant magnetic fields created in an overdense, hot plasma by relativistic intensity (10(18) W/cm(2)) femtosecond laser pulses. We have obtained magneto-optic polarigrams at femtosecond time intervals, simultaneously with micrometer spatial resolution. The spatial profiles of the magnetic field show randomness and their k spectra exhibit a power law along with certain well defined peaks at scales shorter than skin depth. Detailed two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations delineate the underlying interaction between forward currents of relativistic energy "hot" electrons created by the laser pulse and "cold" return currents of thermal electrons induced in the target. Our results are not only fundamentally interesting but should also arouse interest on the role of magnetic turbulence induced resistivity in the context of fast ignition of laser fusion, and the possibility of experimentally simulating such structures with respect to the sun and other stellar environments.

Effect of lattice structure on energetic electron transport in solids irradiated by ultraintense laser pulses

The effect of lattice structure on the transport of energetic (MeV) electrons in solids irradiated by ultraintense laser pulses is investigated using various allotropes of carbon. We observe smooth electron transport in diamond, whereas beam filamentation is observed with less ordered forms of carbon. The highly ordered lattice structure of diamond is shown to result in a transient state of warm dense carbon with metalliclike conductivity, at temperatures of the order of 1-100 eV, leading to suppression of electron beam filamentation.

Plasma thermal effect on the relativistic current-filamentation and two-stream instabilities in a hot-beam warm-plasma system

Based on fully kinetic model using drift-Maxwellian distributions and taking into account the transverse electrostatic field (TEF), it is shown that the current-filamentation instability (CFI) grows unexpectedly with the plasma temperature. The growth is attributed to the decreasing of the TEF as the plasma becomes hot. In the low-temperature plasma regime where the TEF is strong, it is identified that the TEF can dominate over the thermal pressure in suppressing the CFI. Since the TEF originates from the temperature difference between the beam and the plasma, the plasma temperature plays a significant role for the development of the CFI and the quasistatic magnetic fields in a hot-beam warm-plasma system. Particle-in-cell simulations verify the above results.
