Abstract
BACKGROUND Electroacupuncture (EA) has been shown to facilitate brain plasticity-related functional recovery following ischemic stroke. The functional magnetic resonance imaging technique can be used to determine the range and mode of brain activation. After stroke, EA has been shown to alter brain connectivity, whereas EA's effect on brain network topology properties remains unclear. An evaluation of EA's effects on global and nodal topological properties in rats with ischemia reperfusion was conducted in this study. METHODS AND RESULTS There were three groups of adult male Sprague-Dawley rats: sham-operated group (sham group), middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion (MCAO/R) group, and MCAO/R plus EA (MCAO/R + EA) group. The differences in global and nodal topological properties, including shortest path length, global efficiency, local efficiency, small-worldness index, betweenness centrality (BC), and degree centrality (DC) were estimated. Graphical network analyses revealed that, as compared with the sham group, the MCAO/R group demonstrated a decrease in BC value in the right ventral hippocampus and increased BC in the right substantia nigra, accompanied by increased DC in the left nucleus accumbens shell (AcbSh). The BC was increased in the right hippocampus ventral and decreased in the right substantia nigra after EA intervention, and MCAO/R + EA resulted in a decreased DC in left AcbSh compared to MCAO/R. CONCLUSION The results of this study provide a potential basis for EA to promote cognitive and motor function recovery after ischemic stroke.

Abstract
Scalp acupuncture (SA), as a modern acupuncture therapy in the treatment of brain diseases, especially for acute ischemic strokes, has accumulated a wealth of experience and tons of success cases, but the current hypothesized mechanisms of SA therapy still seem to lack significant scientific validity, which may not be conducive to its ultimate integration into mainstream medicine. This review explores a novel perspective about the mechanisms of SA in treating brain diseases based on its effects on cerebral blood flow (CBF). To date, abundant evidence has shown that CBF is significantly increased by stimulating specific SA points, areas or nerves innervating the scalp, which parallels the instant or long-term improvement of symptoms of brain diseases. Over time, the neural pathways that improve CBF by stimulating the trigeminal, the facial, and the cervical nerves have also been gradually revealed. In addition, the presence of the core SA points or areas frequently used for brain diseases can be rationally explained by the characteristics of nerve distribution, including nerve overlap or convergence in certain parts of the scalp. But such characteristics also suggest that the role of these SA points or areas is relatively specific and not due to a direct correspondence between the current hypothesized SA points, areas and the functional zones of the cerebral cortex. The above evidence chain indicates that the efficacy of SA in treating brain diseases, especially ischemic strokes, is mostly achieved by stimulating the scalp nerves, especially the trigeminal nerve to improve CBF. Of course, the mechanisms of SA in treating various brain diseases might be multifaceted. However, the authors believe that understanding the neural regulation of SA on CBF not only captures the main aspects of the mechanisms of SA therapy, but also facilitates the elucidation of other mechanisms, which may be of greater significance to further its clinical applications.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Acupuncture has gradually penetrated into many disciplines in clinical medicine, such as surgery, anesthesia, and outpatient examinations. Although a number of clinical trials have investigated the effects of acupuncture on colonoscopy, the results were inconsistent. In this meta-analysis, we analyzed the effects of acupuncture on colonoscopy to provide evidence for subsequent research and clinical application of acupuncture in colonoscopy. METHODS This meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager version 5.4 and Stata version 16 software. The primary outcome was the incidence of adverse events, and the secondary outcomes included patients' anxiety score before colonoscopy, time to insert the colonoscope, total detection time, propofol consumption, patients' pain score, and patient satisfaction rate. RESULTS The results showed that the incidence of adverse events (odds ratio [OR] 0.27, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.16-0.43, P = 0.00, I2 = 25%), patients' pain score (mean difference [MD] - 1.03, 95% CI - 1.45 to - 0.62, P = 0.00, I2 = 94%), and time to insert the colonoscope (MD = - 2.54, 95% CI - 4.96 to - 0.13, P = 0.04, I2 = 0%) were significantly lower in the treatment group than in the control group. Compared with the control group, the satisfaction rate of patients (OR 2.53, 95% CI 1.56-4.10, P = 0.00, I2 = 47%) in the treatment group was significantly improved. There was no significant between-group difference in patients' anxiety score, the total detection time, and propofol dosage. CONCLUSIONS During colonoscopy, acupuncture can significantly reduce the incidence of adverse events, relieve patients' pain, and improve patient satisfaction. Abstract
Background Facial skin care (FSC) is an important routine for Japanese women. Hand motions during FSC physically affect psychological state. However, it is very difficult to evaluate hand motions during personal and complex FSC. The objective of this study was to find out objective and quantitative parameters for hand motions during facial skin care (FSC). Women who enjoy and soothe during FSC (Enjoyment group (E group), n = 20) or not (non-enjoyment group (NE group), n = 19) were recruited by an advance questionnaire. The same lotion, emulsion, and cream were provided to all subjects, and they used sequentially in the same way as the women’s daily FSC. The motion of the marker on the back side of the right middle finger during FSC was tracked by a motion capture system. The heart rate variability (HRV) was also measured before and after FSC for evaluating psychological effect. Results The averaged acceleration (Avg. ACC), approximate entropy (ApEn), and power law scaling exponent (Rest γ) of the cumulative duration of slow motion from the sequential data of acceleration were evaluated. Compared to the NE group, the E group showed a lower Avg. ACC when using emulsion (p = 0.005) and cream (p = 0.007), a lower ApEn when using emulsion (p = 0.003), and a lower Rest γ (p = 0.024) when using all items, suggesting that compared to the NE group, the E group had more tender and regular motion, and sustainable slow motions, especially in the use of emulsion. In the E group, the low/high-frequency component of HRV decreased significantly after FSC, suggesting suppression of sympathetic activity (p = 0.045). NE group did not. For all subjects, ApEn and Rest γ showed significantly positive correlation with the increase in the low/high-frequency component of HRV after FSC (p < 0.01). ApEn showed significantly negative correlation with the increase in the high-frequency component of HRV after FSC (p < 0.05). Avg. ACC did not show significant correlation with them. These results suggested that the behavior of FSC influences the autonomic nerve system. Conclusions ApEn and Rest γ are useful parameters for evaluating quality of hand motions during FSC.

Abstract
Objective: The current authors observed enhanced cerebral blood flow (CBF) in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) in response to 100-Hz electroacupuncture (EA) stimulation of the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve. However, it is not yet clear if responsiveness to 100-Hz EA depends on stimulus intensity. This study examined the effects of stimulus strength on PFC CBF during 100-Hz EA of the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve. Materials and Methods: Twelve subjects underwent 3 acupuncture sessions: I, control, no stimulation; II, 0.1 mA EA; and III, 0.2 mA EA). Needles were inserted 1 cm lateral of the head median line; the anterior insertion point was on the front hairline and the posterior insertion point was ∼7 cm behind the hairline. Stimulation frequency was set to 100-Hz. PFC CBF was measured in terms of oxygenated, deoxygenated, and total hemoglobin (OxyHb, DeoxyHb, TotalHb, respectively), using 16-channel (Ch) near-infrared spectroscopy. Results: Stimulation of 0.2 mA was associated with significant elevation of OxyHb levels in the 0.1 mA condition in Chs 6, 10, and 12. Ch 2-6, 10, 12 signals were notably higher than in the control condition. Stimulation of 0.2 mA and 0.1 mA were associated with significant declines in DeoxyHb levels, compared to the control condition in Ch 4. Finally, 0.2 mA stimulation in Chs 12 and 13 was associated with significant elevation of TotalHb levels in the control condition. Conclusions: Using 0.2-mA stimulation, 100-Hz EA of the ophthalmic nerve enhances PFC CBF more strongly than 0.1-mA stimulation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Autogenic training (AT) is a major relaxation training technique whose clinical efficacy has been verified in dermatology. Many reports demonstrate ameliorated skin conditions in AT-treated subjects with reduced psychological stress. However, no studies have examined the effects of AT on the skin of postmenopausal women. OBJECTIVES We examine the influences of AT on the physical properties of skin and cardiac autonomic activity in postmenopausal women. METHODS Postmenopausal women were classed into an AT group and a control one. The women in the AT group were mentored by a professional to practice AT twice a day for 7 weeks. The women in the control group were instructed to close their eyes for 3 minutes instead of AT. Hydration of the stratum corneum (SC), transepidermal water loss (TEWL), skin elasticity and heart-rate variability (HRV) were measured before and after the study period to examine how they changed. RESULTS SC hydration and skin elasticity of the cheek, increased in both groups, and the increase was significantly higher in the AT group (n = 14) than in the control group (n = 12) (P < 0.05, Cohen's d = 1.03; P < 0.05, Cohen's d = 0.99; respectively). TEWL did not change in either group. LF/HF was lower in the AT group than in the control group (P < 0.05, Cohen's d = 0.91). CONCLUSION AT increased SC hydration and skin elasticity with changes in the balance of autonomic nervous system activity in postmenopausal women, implying that AT may have improvement effects on aged skin by menopause.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the effect of electroacupuncture (EA) stimulation on multiple physiological indices and to evaluate both local and systemic physiological responses induced by the stimulation. METHODS 15 healthy male college students participated in an experimental crossover study. They received two kinds of interventions: one with EA stimulation and one without EA stimulation on different days. Two disposable acupuncture needles were inserted at two traditional acupuncture points (ST36 and ST38), located along the anterior tibialis muscle. EA stimulation was administered for 10 min. Skin temperature (ST), skin blood flow (SBF) and muscle blood volume (MBV) were recorded near the stimulation sites, while the pupil diameter (PD) was measured before, during and after the interventions. RESULTS ST, SBF and MBV increased significantly following EA stimulation. PD of the right and left eyes decreased significantly following EA stimulation. There was a significant difference in ST responses between the groups (P=0.001). For SBF, MBV and PD, no significant differences were demonstrated between the groups. CONCLUSIONS Our study showed that 10 min of EA stimulation increased ST, SBF and MBV, and decreased PD, compared to baseline, while no significant change was observed in the control group. This suggests that EA stimulation alters local blood flow and ST, and these responses are likely mediated via segmental spinal reflexes, supraspinal reflexes involving parasympathetic activation, and other mechanisms.

Abstract
Objective: To confirm that acupuncture applied to patients would improve the clinical curative effect and accelerate the patient's recovery by introducing the application of acupuncture in pre-operation, during operation, and post-operation. Data sources: Literature cited in this review was retrieved from PubMed, Web of Science, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and was primarily published in English or Chinese from 2010 to 2018, with keywords of “acupuncture,” “electroacupuncture,” “perioperative period,” “sedation,” “analgesia,” and “recovery.” Relevant citations in the retrieved articles were also screened to include more data. Study selection: All retrieved literature was scrutinized, most typical articles related on perioperative acupuncture application in clinical study were reviewed. Results: Acupuncture could relieve anxiety and stress during the preoperative stage. It reduces the usage of narcotics and stress response, and maintains the respiratory stability and homeostasis during surgery. It also exerts a protective effect on vital organs, and during the postoperative stages, enhances the recovery while effectively alleviating the postoperative pain. This phenomenon prevents common postoperative discomforts such as nausea and vomiting. In addition, it might improve the patients’ long-term prognosis. Conclusions: The novel concept “perioperative acupuncture medicine” is to focus on the optimal treatment in the perioperative period of surgical patients. The review reveals the important role of acupuncture in enhancing rapid recovery of patients during the perioperative period.

Abstract
Peripheral electrical stimulation (PES), which encompasses several techniques with heterogeneous physiological responses, has shown in some cases remarkable outcomes for pain treatment and clinical rehabilitation. However, results are still mixed, mainly because there is a lack of understanding regarding its neural mechanisms of action. In this study, we aimed to assess its effects by measuring cortical activation as indexed by functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). fNIRS is a functional optical imaging method to evaluate hemodynamic changes in oxygenated (HbO) and de-oxygenated (HbR) blood hemoglobin concentrations in cortical capillary networks that can be related to cortical activity. We hypothesized that non-painful PES of accessory spinal nerve (ASN) can promote cortical activation of sensorimotor cortex (SMC) and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) pain processing cortical areas. Fifteen healthy volunteers received both active and sham ASN electrical stimulation in a crossover study. The hemodynamic cortical response to unilateral right ASN burst electrical stimulation with 10 Hz was measured by a 40-channel fNIRS system. The effect of ASN electrical stimulation over HbO concentration in cortical areas of interest (CAI) was observed through the activation of right-DLPFC (p = 0.025) and left-SMC (p = 0.042) in the active group but not in sham group. Regarding left-DLPFC (p = 0.610) and right-SMC (p = 0.174) there was no statistical difference between groups. As in non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) top-down modulation, bottom-up electrical stimulation to the ASN seems to activate the same critical cortical areas on pain pathways related to sensory-discriminative and affective-motivational pain dimensions. These results provide additional mechanistic evidence to develop and optimize the use of peripheral nerve electrical stimulation as a neuromodulatory tool (NCT 03295370— www.clinicaltrials.gov).

Abstract
RATIONALE The rate of spontaneous recovery of sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) has been reported to be as high as 32% to 65%. Although the majority of spontaneous recoveries occur within 2 weeks, treatment of refractory SSNHL failing conventional therapy is difficult. In particular, it is more difficult to treat children-who have a worse prognosis than adults-with SSNHL refractory to conventional therapy. No studies reported delayed recovery of pediatric SSNHL later than 3 months after onset, or delayed recovery treated with acupuncture. PATIENT CONCERNS A 15-year-old girl experienced hearing loss after acquiring a cold. DIAGNOSIS She did not undergo audiometry and only took medicine for a common cold after diagnosis by an internal medicine doctor. Ninety-three days after onset, she visited an otorhinolaryngology clinic and was diagnosed with SSNHL. Seven rounds of intratympanic steroid (ITS) treatment were performed 93 to 135 days after onset; audiogram at 149 days did not demonstrate improvement. INTERVENTIONS Two-hundred sixty-six days after onset, she visited to TKM hospital and was admitted for 21 days and received outpatient treatment for 1 month after discharge. She was treated acupuncture, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, and moxibustion. OUTCOMES She experienced improvement in experienced improvement in pure tone average, speech recognition threshold, and word recognition scores after acupuncture treatment. Delayed ITS treatment at 93 to 135 days after onset did not improve the patient's hearing loss. However, slight recovery was achieved at the conclusion of treatment. LESSONS Acupuncture may be a therapeutic option for individuals who do not experience improvement after the use of steroids or miss early treatment.

Abstract
Background: Many studies to clarify the influences of acupuncture at different acupoints of various meridians on cerebral blood flow (CBF) were conducted in the past. However, the influences of acupuncture at the points of the Governor Vessel on CBF have not yet been studied tangibly. Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influences of acupuncture at individual acupoints of the Governor Vessel on cerebral hemodynamic indices. Materials and Methods: Two hundred and seventy-nine patients with chronic cerebral circulation insufficiency (CCCI) were observed, using a cerebrovascular disease diagnosis system (CVD 3000, KCC, Pyongyang, Democratic People's Republic of Korea). Various hemodynamic indices-such as vascular compliance, hemodynamic resistance, and blood flow quantity-were compared before and after acupuncture at individual acupoints of the Governor Vessel. Results: The influences of the points of Governor Vessel on CBF were different from each other, and systemic specificity of the Governor Vessel did not emerge. The largest number of indices showed significant changes when GV 16 was punctured, and the effects of GV 16, GV 20, and GV 14 on the head and the neck were relatively better than those of the points on the trunk. Conclusions: The points on the head and the neck of the Governor Vessel improve CBF biphasic regulation relatively better than the points on the trunk.
