What Role Does Patient Gratitude Play in the Relationship Between Relationship Quality and Patient Loyalty?

Exploring the Relationship Between Hospital Service Quality, Patient Trust, and Loyalty From a Service Encounter Perspective in Elderly With Chronic Diseases

Based on the service encounter perspective, this study combines theoretical foundations for such factors as service quality and the characteristics of the hospital service industry to develop a research model scale to investigate whether the quality of hospital services affects patients' perceptions of health service encounters, trust, and loyalty. Nowadays, with the advancement of medical technology, patients pay more attention to the quality of medical services and good service encounters provided by healthcare professionals in order to establish positive patient relationships; hospitals need to improve their own service quality and establish good patient trust relationships so that doctor-patient satisfaction and loyalty can be improved. In a review of related literature, this study found that most past studies focused on issues related of quality of medical services and patient satisfaction, but ignored those related to the relationship between medical service encounters and patient trust and loyalty, as well as the lack of scientific measurement markers for service encounters in the Chinese medical service industry. Therefore, this study uses the Service Encounter Perspective and Service Quality Theory Development Research Scale to collect and analyze data for a typical case of a Chinese tertiary hospital. Finally, this study explores the relationship between the four variables of service quality, service encounter, trust, and loyalty by means of a questionnaire and statistical analysis of the data. Finally, it is concluded that the higher the service quality of the hospital, the higher the customer trust, the higher the service encounter, and in the greater the doctor-patient loyalty.

The effect of patient perceived involvement on patient loyalty in primary care: The mediating role of patient satisfaction and the moderating role of the family doctor contract service

BACKGROUND

The Chinese government has taken many incentives to promote the implementation of the family doctor (FD) contract service; however, whether primary health care providers establishing a strong relationship with patients that shapes their loyalty is still unknown. Under this circumstance, drawing the public attention to patient loyalty in primary care and clarifying the underlying mechanism of loyalty is imperative to the development of primary care.

OBJECTIVE

To analyse the effect of patient perceived involvement on patient loyalty in primary care, investigate the mediating role of patient satisfaction, and explore the moderating role of the FD contract service on the relationship between patient perceived involvement and patient loyalty.

METHODS

A cross-sectional questionnaire survey of patients in primary health facilities was conducted in Jilin province of China. Participants comprised 1334 patients selected via a multi-stage sampling method.

RESULTS

Patient perceived involvement not only had a direct positive impact on patient loyalty but also had an indirect effect on patient loyalty via patient satisfaction. Furthermore, for patients who contracted with FDs, patient perceived involvement had a higher direct effect and indirect effect on patient loyalty when compared with patients who did not contract with FDs.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings suggest that health managers should encourage patients to participate in medical visits to improve patient satisfaction. Additionally, customised and tailored health services that meet individuals' specific needs and preferences should be designed and implemented to attract more patients to contract the FD contract service.

The Effect of Perceived Value, Trust, and Commitment on Patient Loyalty in Taiwan

Increasing patient loyalty through improved health care quality and patient–provider relationships becomes the key factor in medical providers’ successes. This study explored the mediated relationship of patients’ perceived value, patient commitment, and patient loyalty and the moderating effect of patient trust on the mediated relationship. A cross-sectional research design was adopted. Mediation and moderated mediation were tested using the PROCESS macro v3.5 for the SPSS supplement. Convenience sampling was used for the distribution of questionnaires to members of the public with experience of seeking medical attention in Taiwan. Among the 254 valid questionnaires recovered, 59.4% of the respondents were male, 38.6% were married, 90.2% were in the 20 to 49 year age range, and 54.7% had a bachelor’s degree or above. This study indicated a significant mediated relationship among patients’ perceived value of medical services, commitment to the patient–provider relationship, and patient loyalty. Furthermore, when the patient demonstrated higher levels of trust in a healthcare provider, the relationship of perceived value, commitment, and patient loyalty was also enhanced. This study discussed and demonstrated the effect of perceived value, trust, and commitment on patient loyalty. The research suggests that improving patient loyalty benefits sustainable operation of medical providers and the treatment effects for patients.
