RSK activation via ERK modulates human colon cancer cells response to PTHrP

RSK inhibitors as potential anticancer agents: Discovery, optimization, and challenges

Ribosomal S6 kinase (RSK) family is a group of serine/threonine kinases, including four isoforms (RSK1/2/3/4). As a downstream effector of the Ras-mitogen-activated protein kinase (Ras-MAPK) pathway, RSK participates in many physiological activities such as cell growth, proliferation, and migration, and is intimately involved in tumor occurrence and development. As a result, it is recognized as a potential target for anti-cancer and anti-resistance therapies. There have been several RSK inhibitors discovered or designed in recent decades, but only two have entered clinical trials. Low specificity, low selectivity, and poor pharmacokinetic properties in vivo limit their clinical translation. Published studies performed structure optimization by increasing interaction with RSK, avoiding hydrolysis of pharmacophores, eliminating chirality, adapting to binding site shape, and becoming prodrugs. Besides enhancing efficacy, the focus of further design will move towards selectivity since there are functional differences among RSK isoforms. This review summarized the types of cancers associated with RSK, along with the structural characteristics and optimization process of the reported RSK inhibitors. Furthermore, we addressed the importance of RSK inhibitors' selectivity and discussed future drug development directions. This review is expected to shed light on the emergence of RSK inhibitors with high potency, specificity, and selectivity.

Involvement of Met receptor pathway in aggressive behavior of colorectal cancer cells induced by parathyroid hormone-related peptide

BACKGROUND

Parathyroid hormone-related peptide (PTHrP) plays a key role in the development and progression of many tumors. We found that in colorectal cancer (CRC) HCT116 cells, the binding of PTHrP to its receptor PTHR type 1 (PTHR1) activates events associated with an aggressive phenotype. In HCT116 cell xenografts, PTHrP modulates the expression of molecular markers linked to tumor progression. Empirical evidence suggests that the Met receptor is involved in the development and evolution of CRC. Based on these data, we hypothesized that the signaling pathway trigged by PTHrP could be involved in the transactivation of Met and consequently in the aggressive behavior of CRC cells.

AIM

To elucidate the relationship among PTHR1, PTHrP, and Met in CRC models.

METHODS

For in vitro assays, HCT116 and Caco-2 cells derived from human CRC were incubated in the absence or presence of PTHrP (1-34) (10^-8 M). Where indicated, cells were pre-incubated with specific kinase inhibitors or dimethylsulfoxide, the vehicle of the inhibitors. The protein levels were evaluated by Western blot technique. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) was carried out to determine the changes in gene expression. Wound healing assay and morphological monitoring were performed to evaluate cell migration and changes related to the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), respectively. The number of viable HCT116 cells was counted by trypan blue dye exclusion test to evaluate the effects of irinotecan (CPT-11), oxaliplatin (OXA), or doxorubicin (DOXO) with or without PTHrP. For in vivo tests, HCT116 cell xenografts on 6-wk-old male N:NIH (S)_nu mice received daily intratumoral injections of PTHrP (40 μg/kg) in 100 μL phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) or the vehicle (PBS) as a control during 20 d. Humanitarian slaughter was carried out and the tumors were removed, weighed, and fixed in a 4% formaldehyde solution for subsequent treatment by immunoassays. To evaluate the expression of molecular markers in human tumor samples, we studied 23 specimens obtained from CRC patients which were treated at the Hospital Interzonal de Graves y Agudos Dr. José Penna (Bahía Blanca, Buenos Aires, Argentina) and the Hospital Provincial de Neuquén (Neuquén, Neuquén, Argentina) from January 1990 to December 2007. Seven cases with normal colorectal tissues were assigned to the control group. Tumor tissue samples and clinical histories of patients were analyzed. Paraffin-embedded blocks from primary tumors were reviewed by hematoxylin-eosin staining technique; subsequently, representative histological samples were selected from each patient. From each paraffin block, tumor sections were stained for immunohistochemical detection. The statistical significance of differences was analyzed using proper statistical analysis. The results were considered statistically significant at P < 0.05.

RESULTS

By Western blot analysis and using total Met antibody, we found that PTHrP regulated Met expression in HCT116 cells but not in Caco-2 cells. In HCT116 cells, Met protein levels increased at 30 min (P < 0.01) and at 20 h (P < 0.01) whereas the levels diminished at 3 min (P < 0.05), 10 min (P < 0.01), and 1 h to 5 h (P < 0.01) of PTHrP treatment. Using an active Met antibody, we found that where the protein levels of total Met decreased (3 min, 10 min, and 60 min of PTHrP exposure), the status of phosphorylated/activated Met increased (P < 0.01) at the same time, suggesting that Met undergoes proteasomal degradation after its phosphorylation/activation by PTHrP. The increment of its protein level after these decreases (at 30 min and 20 h) suggests a modulation of Met expression by PTHrP in order to improve Met levels and this idea is supported by our observation that the cytokine increased Met mRNA levels at least at 15 min in HCT116 cells as revealed by RT-qPCR analysis (P < 0.05). We then proceeded to evaluate the signaling pathways that mediate the phosphorylation/ activation of Met induced by PTHrP in HCT116 cells. By Western blot technique, we observed that PP1, a specific inhibitor of the activation of the proto-oncogene protein tyrosine kinase Src, blocked the effect of PTHrP on Met phosphorylation (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the selective inhibition of the ERK 1/2 mitogen-activated protein kinase (ERK 1/2 MAPK) using PD98059 and the p38 MAPK using SB203580 diminished the effect of PTHrP on Met phosphorylation/activation (P < 0.05). Using SU11274, the specific inhibitor of Met activation, and trypan blue dye exclusion test, Western blot, wound healing assay, and morphological analysis with a microscope, we observed the reversal of cell events induced by PTHrP such as cell proliferation (P < 0.05), migration (P < 0.05), and the EMT program (P < 0.01) in HCT116 cells. Also, PTHrP favored the chemoresistance to CPT-11 (P < 0.001), OXA (P < 0.01), and DOXO (P < 0.01) through the Met pathway. Taken together, these findings suggest that Met activated by PTHrP participates in events associated with the aggressive phenotype of CRC cells. By immunohistochemical analysis, we found that PTHrP in HCT116 cell xenografts enhanced the protein expression of Met (0.190 ± 0.014) compared to tumors from control mice (0.110 ± 0.012; P < 0.05) and of its own receptor (2.27 ± 0.20) compared to tumors from control mice (1.98 ± 0.14; P < 0.01). Finally, assuming that the changes in the expression of PTHrP and its receptor are directly correlated, we investigated the expression of both Met and PTHR1 in biopsies of CRC patients by immunohistochemical analysis. Comparing histologically differentiated tumors with respect to those less differentiated, we found that the labeling intensity for Met and PTHR1 increased and diminished in a gradual manner, respectively (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

PTHrP acts through the Met pathway in CRC cells and regulates Met expression in a CRC animal model. More basic and clinical studies are needed to further evaluate the PTHrP/Met relationship.

Tumor microenvironment involvement in colorectal cancer progression via Wnt/β-catenin pathway: Providing understanding of the complex mechanisms of chemoresistance

Colorectal cancer (CRC) continues to be one of the main causes of death from cancer because patients progress unfavorably due to resistance to current therapies. Dysregulation of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway plays a fundamental role in the genesis and progression of several types of cancer, including CRC. In many subtypes of CRC, hyperactivation of the β-catenin pathway is associated with mutations of the adenomatous polyposis coli gene. However, it can also be associated with other causes. In recent years, studies of the tumor microenvironment (TME) have demonstrated its importance in the development and progression of CRC. In this tumor nest, several cell types, structures, and biomolecules interact with neoplastic cells to pave the way for the spread of the disease. Cross-communications between tumor cells and the TME are then established primarily through paracrine factors, which trigger the activation of numerous signaling pathways. Crucial advances in the field of oncology have been made in the last decade. This Minireview aims to actualize what is known about the central role of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway in CRC chemoresistance and aggressiveness, focusing on cross-communication between CRC cells and the TME. Through this analysis, our main objective was to increase the understanding of this complex disease considering a more global context. Since many treatments for advanced CRC fail due to mechanisms involving chemoresistance, the data here exposed and analyzed are of great interest for the development of novel and effective therapies.

Involvement of parathyroid hormone-related peptide in the aggressive phenotype of colorectal cancer cells

Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains one of the leading causes of mortality from malignant diseases worldwide. In general terms, CRC presents high heterogeneity due to the influence of different genetic and environmental factors; also, the neoplastic cells are strongly influenced by the extracellular matrix and several surrounding cells, known together as the tumor microenvironment (TME). Bidirectional communication takes place between the tumor and the TME through the release of autocrine and paracrine factors. Parathyroid hormone-related peptide (PTHrP) is a cytokine secreted by a wide variety of tissues and is able to regulate several cellular functions both in physiological as well as in pathological processes. It exerts its effects as a paracrine/autocrine factor, although its mode of action is mainly paracrine. It has been shown that this peptide is expressed by several tumors and that the tumor secretion of PTHrP is responsible for the malignant humoral hypercalcemia. Eight years ago, when our research group started studying PTHrP effects in the experimental models derived from intestinal tumors, the literature available at the time addressing the effects of PTHrP on colorectal tumors was limited, and no articles had been published regarding to the paracrine action of PTHrP in CRC cells. Based on this and on our previous findings regarding the role of PTH in CRC cells, our purpose in recent years has been to explore the role of PTHrP in CRC. We analyzed the behavior of CRC cells treated with exogenous PTHrP, focalizing in the study of the following events: Survival, cell cycle progression and proliferation, migration, chemoresistance, tumor-associated angiogenesis, epithelial to mesenchymal transition program and other events also associated with invasion, such us the induction of cancer stem cells features. This work summarizes the major findings obtained by our investigation group using in vitro and in vivo CRC models that evidence the participation of PTHrP in the acquisition of an aggressive phenotype of CRC cells and the molecular mechanisms involved in these processes. Recently, we found that this cytokine induces this malignant behavior not only by its direct action on these intestinal cells but also through its influence on cells derived from TME, promoting a communication between CRC cells and surrounding cells that contributes to the molecular and morphological changes observed in CRC cells. These investigations establish the basis for our next studies in order to address the clinical applicability of our findings. Recognizing the factors and mechanisms that promote invasion in CRC cells, evasion to the cytotoxic effects of current CRC therapies and thus metastasis is decisive for the identification of new markers with the potential to improve early diagnosis and/or to predict prognosis, to predetermine drug resistance and to provide treatment guidelines that include targeted therapies for this disease.

Role of SPARC in the epithelial-mesenchymal transition induced by PTHrP in human colon cancer cells

Parathyroid hormone-related peptide (PTHrP) exerts its effects on cells derived from colorectal cancer (CRC) and tumor microenvironment and is involved in processes requiring the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Here, we report that PTHrP modulates factors expression and morphological changes associated with EMT in HCT116 cells from CRC. PTHrP increased the protein expression of SPARC, a factor involved in EMT, in HCT116 cells but not in Caco-2 cells also from CRC but with less aggressiveness. PTHrP also increased SPARC expression and its subsequent release from endothelial HMEC-1 cells. The conditioned media of PTHrP-treated HMEC-1 cells induced early changes related to EMT in HCT116 cells. Moreover, SPARC treatment on HCT116 cells potentiated PTHrP modulation in E-cadherin expression and cell migration. In vivo PTHrP also increased SPARC expression and decreased E-cadherin expression. These results suggest a novel PTHrP action on CRC progression involving the microenvironment in the modulation of events associated with EMT.

ACE2 correlates with immune infiltrates in colon adenocarcinoma: Implication for COVID-19

Novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has become a global health emergency. It has been reported that a few conditions, including cancer, predispose individuals to SARS-CoV-2 infection and severe form of COVID-19. These findings led us to evaluate the susceptibility of colon adenocarcinoma (COAD) patients to SARS-CoV-2 infection by investigating ACE2 expression in their tumor tissues. The expression analysis revealed that both mRNA and protein levels of ACE2 had increased in colon cancer samples than normal group. Next, the prognosis analysis has indicated that the upregulation of ACE2 was not correlated with patient survival outcomes. Further assessment displayed the hypomethylation of the ACE2 gene promoter in COAD patients. This methylation status has a strong negative correlation with ACE2 gene expression. The functional enrichment analysis of the genes that had similar expression patterns with ACE2 in colon cancer tissues demonstrated that they mainly enriched in Vitamin digestion and absorption pathway. Finally, we found that ACE2 gene expression had a significant association with the immune cell infiltration levels in COAD patients. In conclusion, it has plausible that COAD patients are more likely to be infected with SARS-CoV-2 and experience severe injuries. Moreover, COVID-19 would bring unfavorable survival outcomes for patients with colon cancer by way of immune cell infiltration linked process. The present study highlights the importance of preventive actions for COAD patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Overexpression of RSK4 reverses doxorubicin resistance in human breast cancer cells via PI3K/AKT signalling pathway

Doxorubicin (DOX) is one of the most effective chemotherapy drugs for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer (BC), but drug resistance becomes an obstacle to treatment. This study aims to investigate the role of Ribosomal S6 protein kinase 4 (RSK4) in regulating BC resistance to DOX. We first used Kaplan-Meier Plotter to identify the prognostic roles of RSK4 in BC. DOX-resistant BC cells (MCF-7/DOX) were constructed and the expression of RSK4 was determined by reverse transcript polymerase chain reaction and western blot. Subsequently, we overexpressed the RSK4 in MCF-7/DOX cells, and measured drug resistance, colony formation, cell migration, invasion ability and cell apoptosis after transfection. In addition, western blot was used to explore the expression of apoptosis-related proteins and BC-resistance protein. Effects of RSK4 on activation of the PI3K/AKT signalling pathway were also tested. Furthermore, tumour xenograft in nude mice was constructed to observe the effect of RSK4 overexpression on tumour growth in vivo. In conclusion, RSK4 was positively correlated with survival rate in BC patients, which is lowly expressed in MCF-7/DOX. Meanwhile, the overexpression of RSK4 may inhibit drug resistance, cell migration, invasion, apoptosis and tumour growth. RSK4 may effectively attenuate DOX resistance in BC by inhibiting the PI3K/AKT signalling pathway.

Implication of myeloid differentiation factor 88 inhibitor TJ-M2010-5 for therapeutic intervention of hepatocellular carcinoma

AIM

Myeloid differentiation factor 88 (MyD88) plays a key role in tumor proliferation and metastasis. Targeting MyD88 is a potent strategy in tumor therapy. TJ-M2010-5 is a small molecule derivative of aminothiazole and could inhibit dimer formation of MyD88. To explore the potential of TJ-M2010-5 in tumor therapy, we determined its antitumor effect and correlate mechanisms of TJ-M2010-5 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

METHODS

The antitumor effect of intratumoral injection of TJ-M2010-5 to H22 tumor-bearing BALB/c mice was observed. Tumor growth was monitored. The expression of MyD88 and Ki-67 were detected by immunofluorescence. In vitro, the impacts of TJ-M2010-5 on proliferation, cell cycle, necrosis, and apoptosis of H22 cells were evaluated. The direct and indirect effects of TJ-M2010-5 on macrophages were evaluated using flow cytometry.

RESULTS

TJ-M2010-5 induced both G₀ /G₁ and G₁ /S phase arrests in HCC cells. Mechanically, downstream activation of MyD88 was suppressed by TJ-M2010-5 through the extracellular regulated protein kinase-1/2/p90 ribosomal S6 kinase/glycogen synthase kinase-3β signaling pathway. In turn, cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK)6/cyclin D1 and CDK2/cyclin E complexes were downregulated. More importantly, TJ-M2010-5 significantly inhibited tumor growth in mice. Additionally, the portion of antitumor M1 macrophages (F4/80⁺ CD11c⁺ ) in the tumor microenvironment were increased after TJ-M2010-5 treatment. Together, these data indicate that TJ-M2010-5 is a promising therapeutic drug for HCC.

CONCLUSIONS

These results indicate that MyD88 is a feasible target for antitumor treatment and TJ-M2010-5 is a qualified candidate for HCC therapy.

PTHrP treatment of colon cancer cells promotes tumor associated-angiogenesis by the effect of VEGF

We showed that Parathyroid Hormone-related Peptide (PTHrP) induces proliferation, migration, survival and chemoresistance via MAPKs and PI3K/AKT pathways in colorectal cancer (CRC) cells. The objective of this study was to investigate if PTHrP is also involved in tumor angiogenesis. PTHrP increased VEGF expression and the number of structures with characteristics of neoformed vessels in xenografts tumor. Also, PTHrP increased mRNA levels of VEGF, HIF-1α and MMP-9 via ERK1/2 and PI3K/Akt pathways in Caco-2 and HCT116 cells. Tumor conditioned media (TCMs) from both cell lines treated with PTHrP increases the number of cells, the migration and the tube formation in the endothelial HMEC-1 cells, whereas the neutralizing antibody against VEGF diminished this response. In contrast, PTHrP by direct treatment only increased ERK1/2 phosphorylation and the HMEC-1 cells number. These results provide the first evidence related to the mode of action of PTHrP that leads to its proangiogenic effects in the CRC.

Inhibition of Colorectal Cancer Cell Proliferation by Regulating Platelet-Derived Growth Factor B Signaling with a DNA Aptamer

Background:

Overexpression of platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PDGF-BB) is associated with colorectal carcinogenesis. PDGF-BB plays a role in the autocrine growth stimulation of cancer cells. Aptamers are short single-stranded oligonucleotides that can bind to cellular targets with high affinity and specificity and offer the advantage of non-immunogenicity, non-toxicity and high stability. Thus, they receive interest as potential therapeutic agents.

Methods:

The endogenous level of PDGF-BB in Caco-2 and SW480, colorectal cancer (CRC) cells, was evaluated using ELISA. The effect of the PDGF-BB aptamer on cell proliferation was investigated in two CRC cell lines and CCD841 CoN, normal colon cells. The effective molar ratio between PDGF-BB and PDGF-BB aptamer was further explored. Cell viability in all experiments was analyzed using MTS assay. Western blotting was performed to examine the alteration of relevant signaling pathways.

Results:

Caco-2 and SW480 cells endogenously synthesized and secreted PDGF-BB to stimulate their growth. Cells treated with the PDGF-BB aptamer proliferated at a slower rate, but CCD841 CoN did not. Pre-incubation of PDGF-BB with the corresponding aptamer at the molar ratio 1:1 could significantly silence its proliferative effect on CRC cells. Western blot analysis revealed that the phosphorylation level of ERK1/2, a key component in PDGF downstream signaling pathway, was down-regulated by the aptamer, indicating the underlying mechanism of inhibition of CRC cell proliferation.

Conclusions:

This study demonstrated that using a DNA aptamer to interfere with the binding of PDGF-BB to its receptor suppressed CRC cell proliferation in part via down-regulation of the Ras/Raf/MEK/ERK signaling pathway. It raised the possibility that the PDGF-BB-specific aptamer could be a promising therapeutic agent for CRC targeted therapy.

Novel 1,4‑naphthoquinone derivatives induce reactive oxygen species‑mediated apoptosis in liver cancer cells

Derivatives of 1,4-naphthoquinone have excellent anti-cancer effects, but their use has been greatly limited due to their serious side effects. To develop compounds with decreased side effects and improved anti-cancer activity, two novel types of 1,4-naphthoquinone derivatives, 2,3-dihydro-2,3-epoxy-2-propylsulfonyl-5,8-dimethoxy-1,4-naphthoquinone (EPDMNQ) and 2,3-dihydro-2,3-epoxy-2-nonylsulfonyl-5,8-dimethoxy-1,4-naphthoquinone (ENDMNQ) were synthesized and their anti-tumor activities were investigated. The effects of EPDMNQ and ENDMNQ on cell viability, apoptosis and accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in liver cancer cells were determined by MTT cell viability assay and flow cytometry. The expression levels of mitochondrial, mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) signaling pathway-associated proteins in Hep3B liver cancer cells were analyzed by western blot analysis. The results demonstrated that EPDMNQ and ENDMNQ inhibited the proliferation of liver cancer Hep3B, HepG2, and Huh7 cell lines but not that of normal liver L-02, normal lung IMR-90 and stomach GES-1 cell lines. The number of apoptotic cells and ROS levels were significantly increased following treatment with EPDMNQ and ENDMNQ, and these effects were blocked by the ROS inhibitor N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) in Hep3B cells. EPDMNQ and ENDMNQ induced apoptosis by upregulating the protein expression of p38 MAPK and c-Jun N-terminal kinase and downregulating extracellular signal-regulated kinase and STAT3; these effects were inhibited by NAC. The results of the present study demonstrated that EPDMNQ and ENDMNQ induced apoptosis through ROS-modulated MAPK and STAT3 signaling pathways in Hep3B cells. Therefore, these novel 1,4-naphthoquinone derivatives may be useful as anticancer agents for the treatment of liver cancer.

Potential therapeutic targets for growth arrest of colorectal cancer cells exposed to PTHrP

Although PTHrP is implicated in several cancers, its role in chemoresistance is not fully elucidated. We found that in CRC cells, PTHrP exerts proliferative and protective effects and induces cell migration. The aim of this work was to further study the effects of PTHrP in CRC cells. Herein we evidenced, for the first time, that PTHrP induces resistance to CPT-11 in Caco-2 and HCT116 cells; although both cell lines responded to the drug through different molecular mechanisms, the chemoresistance by PTHrP in these models is mediated through ERK, which in turn is activated by PCK, Src and Akt. Moreover, continue administration of PTHrP in nude mice xenografts increased the protein levels of this MAPK and of other markers related to tumorigenic events. The understanding of the molecular mechanisms leading to ERK 1/2 activation and the study of ERK targets may facilitate the development of new therapeutic strategies for CRC treatment.

A natural ent‑kaurane diterpenoid induces antiproliferation in ovarian cancer cells via ERK1/2 regulation and inhibition of cellular migration and invasion

Ovarian cancer is one of the most common causes of female mortalities from gynecological tumors. An ent‑kaurane diterpenoid compound CRT1 (ent‑18‑acetoxy‑7β‑hydroxy kaur‑15‑oxo‑16‑ene), mainly isolated from the Vietnamese herb Croton tonkinesis has been used in folk medicine in Vietnam for cancer treatment. However, the effect of this compound on human ovarian cancer cells has not yet been reported. The objective of the present study was to determine the effect of CRT1 on the cell viability, apoptosis and metastasis of SKOV3 human ovarian cancer cells using a Cell Counting Kit‑8 assay, flow cytometric analysis of Annexin V‑fluorescein isothiocyanate/propidium iodide staining, western blot analysis, soft agar colony forming assay, wound healing assay and Matrigel invasion assay. The results revealed that CRT1 possessed significant anti‑proliferative effects on SKOV3 cells. CRT1 treatment at 25 and 50 µM induced apoptosis, enhanced the percentage of Annexin V‑positive cells, increased the expression of pro‑apoptotic protein B‑cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl‑2)‑associated X protein, cytochrome c release from the mitochondria to the cytosol, cleaved caspase‑3, caspase‑7, caspase‑9, and poly (adenosine diphosphate‑ribose) polymerase. However, it decreased the expression of Bcl‑2 in a dose‑dependent manner. The percentage of necrotic cells increased following CRT1 treatment at <10 µM. CRT1 at 50 µM significantly induced the phosphorylation of extracellular signal‑regulated kinase (ERK). Growth inhibition and the apoptotic effects of CRT1 could be reversed by PD98059, an ERK inhibitor. Additionally, CRT1 inhibited cell migration and invasion via ERK1/2 activation in SKOV3 cells. These results indicated that CRT1, an ent‑kaurane diterpenoid, may be a potential inhibitor of ovarian cancer by the activating ERK1/2/p90 ribosomal S6 kinase signaling pathway.

Plant Lectins as Medical Tools against Digestive System Cancers

Digestive system cancers-those of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon-rectum, liver, and pancreas-are highly related to genetics and lifestyle. Most are considered highly mortal due to the frequency of late diagnosis, usually in advanced stages, caused by the absence of symptoms or masked by other pathologies. Different tools are being investigated in the search of a more precise diagnosis and treatment. Plant lectins have been studied because of their ability to recognize and bind to carbohydrates, exerting a variety of biological activities on animal cells, including anticancer activities. The present report integrates existing information on the activity of plant lectins on various types of digestive system cancers, and surveys the current state of research into their properties for diagnosis and selective treatment.
