Epidermal growth factor (EGF) promotes bone healing in surgically induced osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH)

Genome-wide association study of growth curve parameters reveals novel genomic regions and candidate genes associated with metatarsal bone traits in chickens

The growth and development of chicken bones have an enormous impact on the health and production performance of chickens. However, the development pattern and genetic regulation of the chicken skeleton are poorly understood. This study aimed to evaluate metatarsal bone growth and development patterns in chickens via non-linear models, and to identify the genetic determinants of metatarsal bone traits using a genome-wide association study (GWAS) based on growth curve parameters. Data on metatarsal length (MeL) and metatarsal circumference (MeC) were obtained from 471 F2 chickens (generated by crossing broiler sires, derived from a line selected for high abdominal fat, with Baier layer dams) at 4, 6, 8, 10, and 12 weeks of age. Four non-linear models (Gompertz, Logistic, von Bertalanffy, and Brody) were used to fit the MeL and MeC growth curves. Subsequently, the estimated growth curve parameters of the mature MeL or MeC (A), time-scale parameter (b), and maturity rate (K) from the non-linear models were utilized as substitutes for the original bone data in GWAS. The Logistic and Brody models displayed the best goodness-of-fit for MeL and MeC, respectively. Single-trait and multi-trait GWASs based on the growth curve parameters of the Logistic and Brody models revealed 4 618 significant single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), annotated to 332 genes, associated with metatarsal bone traits. The majority of these significant SNPs were located on Gallus gallus chromosome (GGA) 1 (167.433-176.318 Mb), GGA2 (96.791-103.543 Mb), GGA4 (65.003-83.104 Mb) and GGA6 (64.685-95.285 Mb). Notably, we identified 12 novel GWAS loci associated with chicken metatarsal bone traits, encompassing 35 candidate genes. In summary, the combination of single-trait and multi-trait GWASs based on growth curve parameters uncovered numerous genomic regions and candidate genes associated with chicken bone traits. The findings benefit an in-depth understanding of the genetic architecture underlying metatarsal growth and development in chickens.

The Role of PEMFs on Bone Healing: An In Vitro Study

Bone responses to pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs) have been extensively studied by using devices that expose bone cells to PEMFs to stimulate extracellular matrix (ECM) synthesis for bone and cartilage repair. The aim of this work was to highlight in which bone healing phase PEMFs exert their action. Specifically, we evaluated the effects of PEMFs both on human adipose mesenchymal stem cells (hASCs) and on primary human osteoblasts (hOBs) by testing gene and protein expression of early bone markers (on hASCs) and the synthesis of late bone-specific proteins (on hOBs) as markers of bone remodeling. Our results indicate that PEMFs seem to exert their action on bone formation, acting on osteogenic precursors (hASCs) and inducing the commitment towards the differentiation pathways, unlike mature and terminally differentiated cells (hOBs), which are known to resist homeostasis perturbation more and seem to be much less responsive than mesenchymal stem cells. Understanding the role of PEMFs on bone regenerative processes provides important details for their clinical application.

Bone Healing in Rat Segmental Femur Defects with Graphene-PCL-Coated Borate-Based Bioactive Glass Scaffolds

Bone is a continually regenerating tissue with the ability to heal after fractures, though healing significant damage requires intensive surgical treatment. In this study, borate-based 13-93B3 bioactive glass scaffolds were prepared though polymer foam replication and coated with a graphene-containing poly (ε-caprolactone) (PCL) layer to support bone repair and regeneration. The effects of graphene concentration (1, 3, 5, 10 wt%) on the healing of rat segmental femur defects were investigated in vivo using male Sprague−Dawley rats. Radiographic imaging, histopathological and immuno-histochemical (bone morphogenetic protein (BMP-2), smooth muscle actin (SMA), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) examinations were performed 4 and 8 weeks after implantation. Results showed that after 8 weeks, both cartilage and bone formation were observed in all animal groups. Bone growth was significant starting from the 1 wt% graphene-coated bioactive glass-implanted group, and the highest amount of bone formation was seen in the group containing 10 wt% graphene (p < 0.001). Additionally, the presence of graphene nanoplatelets enhanced BMP-2, SMA and ALP levels compared to bare bioactive glass scaffolds. It was concluded that pristine graphene-coated bioactive glass scaffolds improve bone formation in rat femur defects.

Exosomal miR-150 derived from BMSCs inhibits TNF-α-mediated osteoblast apoptosis in osteonecrosis of the femoral head by GREM1/NF-κB signaling

Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate the functions of exosomal miR-150 derived from bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells in osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH). Materials & methods: Cell viability and apoptosis were detected using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay and flow cytometry. Alizarin red staining was performed to detect calcium deposits. A rat model was established to assess the effects of exosomal miR-150 on ONFH in vivo. Results: Exosomes or exosomal miR-150 derived from bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells inhibited TNF-α-induced osteoblast apoptosis and promoted osteogenic differentiation and autophagy. Exosomal miR-150 suppressed apoptosis and induced autophagy in TNF-α-treated osteoblasts by regulating the GREM1/NF-κB axis. Exosomal miR-150 also improved the pathological features of ONFH in vivo. Conclusion: Exosomal miR-150 alleviates ONFH by mediating the GREM1/NF-κB axis. This study provides a potential therapeutic strategy for ONFH.

Investigação do efeito do fator de crescimento epidérmico recombinante humano na cicatrização do manguito rotador: Um modelo experimental

Objetivo Investigar a eficácia do fator de crescimento epidérmico (EGF) recombinante humano na cicatrização da lesão do manguito rotador no ombro de coelhos.

Métodos As rupturas do manguito rotador (RMRs) foram criadas experimentalmente em ambos os ombros de 20 coelhos Nova Zelândia. Os coelhos foram divididos nos seguintes grupos: RMR (grupo controle; n = 5), RMR + EGF (grupo EGF; n = 5), RMR + reparo transósseo (grupo reparo; n = 5) e RMR + EGF + reparo transósseo (grupo reparo combinado + EGF; n = 5). Todos os coelhos foram observados por 3 semanas, e amostras de biópsias foram coletadas do ombro direito na 3ª semana. Após mais 3 semanas de observação, todos os coelhos foram submetidos à eutanásia, e uma amostra de biópsia foi coletada dos ombros esquerdos. Todo o material de biópsia foi corado com hematoxilina e eosina (H&E) para avaliação de vascularidade, celularidade, proporção de fibras e número de células fibrocartilaginosas à microscopia óptica.

Resultados O grupo reparo combinado + EGF apresentou a maior quantidade e a sequência mais regular de colágeno. O grupo reparo e o grupo EGF apresentaram maior atividade fibroblástica e formação capilar em comparação ao grupo controle, mas a maior atividade fibroblástica e a formação capilar com maior vascularidade foram detectadas no grupo reparo combinado + EGF (p < 0,001). O EGF parece melhorar a cicatrização da ferida no reparo da RMR. A aplicação isolada de EGF, mesmo sem cirurgia reparadora, parece melhorar a cicatrização da RMR.

Conclusão Além do reparo da RMR, a aplicação de EGF recombinante humano auxilia a cicatrização do manguito rotador dos ombros de coelhos.

Effect of polycaprolactone scaffolds containing different weights of graphene on healing in large osteochondral defect model

Now it is possible to combine the different biomaterial properties of graphene and 3 D printing scaffolds produced by tissue engineering for cartilage repair. In the study graphene-containing (1, 3, 5, 10 wt%), porous and oriented poly-ε-caprolactone-based scaffolds were prepared by robocasting method to use in the regeneration of large osteochondral defects. The scaffolds were implanted into the full-thickness osteochondral defect in a rabbit model to evaluate the regeneration of the defect in vivo. For this purpose, twenty female New Zealand white rabbits were used and they were euthanized at 4 and 8 weeks of implantation. The reparative osteochondral tissues were harvested from rabbit distal femurs and then processed for gross appearance assessment, radiographic imaging, histopathological, histochemical and immunohistochemical examinations. Results revealed that graphene-containing graft materials caused significant amelioration at the defect areas. Graphene-containing graft materials improved the fibrous, chondroid and osseous tissue regeneration compared to the control group. The expressions of bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2), collagen-1 (col-1), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) expressions were more prominent in graphene-containing PCL implanted groups (p < .001). Picrosirrius red method was used for to evaluate connective and muscle tissues. Results also revealed that the ameliorative effect of graphene increased by the elevation in concentration. The most prominent healing was observed in 10 wt% graphene-containing PCL based composite scaffold implanted group. This study results showed that graphene-containing PCL scaffolds enhanced the healing significantly in large osteochondral defect areas compared to the control groups.

Alterations in Saliva and Plasma Cytokine Concentrations During Long-Duration Spaceflight

Long-duration spaceflight is known to cause immune dysregulation in astronauts. Biomarkers of immune system function are needed to determine both the need for and effectiveness of potential immune countermeasures for astronauts. Whereas plasma cytokine concentrations are a well-established biomarker of immune status, salivary cytokine concentrations are emerging as a sensitive indicator of stress and inflammation. For this study, to aid in characterizing immune dysregulation during spaceflight, plasma and saliva cytokines were monitored in astronauts before, during and after long-duration spaceflight onboard the International Space Station. Blood was collected from 13 astronauts at 3 timepoints before, 5 timepoints during and 3 timepoints after spaceflight. Saliva was collected from 6 astronauts at 2 timepoints before spaceflight, 2 timepoints during and 3 timepoints following spaceflight. Samples were analyzed using multiplex array technology. Significant increases in the plasma concentration of IL-3, IL-15, IL-12p40, IFN-α2, and IL-7 were observed during spaceflight compared to before flight baseline. Significant decreases in saliva GM-CSF, IL-12p70, IL-10 and IL-13 were also observed during spaceflight as compared to compared to before flight baseline concentrations. Additionally, plasma TGFβ1 and TGFβ2 concentrations tended to be consistently higher during spaceflight, although these did not reach statistical significance. Overall, the findings confirm an in-vivo hormonal dysregulation of immunity, appearing pro-inflammatory and Th1 in nature, persists during long-duration orbital spaceflight. These biomarkers may therefore have utility for monitoring the effectiveness of biomedical countermeasures for astronauts, with potential application in terrestrial research and medicine.

Reamer-irrigator-aspirate versus bone marrow aspirate concentrate for osteoprogenitor cell retention and osteoinductive protein release on cancellous bone

Bone defects often require operative intervention with the use of bone graft. Two sources of autologous bone graft include reamer-irrigator-aspirate (RIA) and bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMC). Osteoprogenitor cells and osteoconductive proteins have been identified in both sources. This study collected samples of these cells and proteins from a canine model and cultured them on human cancellous allograft bone blocks. Findings suggest that BMC may be preferred for indications that allow for delivery via injection, saturation of the patient's tissues, or an implanted scaffold, whereas RIA may be preferred when the biologic augment is delivered as a scaffold or graft.

Integrated Analysis of miRNA-mRNA Regulatory Networks Associated with Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head

Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) accounts for as many as 18% of total hip arthroplasties. Knowledge of genetic changes and molecular abnormalities could help identify individuals considered to be at a higher risk of developing ONFH. In this study, we sought to identify differentially expressed miRNAs (DEmiRs) and genes (DEGs) associated with ONFH by integrated bioinformatics analyses as well as to construct the miRNA-mRNA regulatory network involving in the pathogenesis of ONFH. We performed differential expression analysis using a gene expression profile GSE123568 and a miRNA expression profile GSE89587 deposited in the Gene Expression Omnibus and identified 47 DEmiRs (24 upregulated miRNAs and 23 downregulated miRNAs) and 529 DEGs (218 upregulated genes and 311 downregulated genes). Gene Ontology enrichment analyses of DEGs suggested that DEGs were significantly enriched in neutrophil activation, cytosol, and ubiquitin-protein transferase activity. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway enrichment analyses of DEGs revealed that DEGs were significantly enriched in transcriptional misregulation in cancer. DEGs-based miRNA-mRNA regulatory networks were obtained by searching miRNA-mRNA prediction databases, TargetScan, miTarBase, miRMap, miRDB, and miRanda databases. Then, overlapped miRNAs were selected between these putative miRNAs and DEmiRs between ONFH and non-ONFH, and pairs of the DEmiR-DEG regulatory network were finally depicted. There were 12 nodes and 64 interactions for upDEmiR-downDEG regulatory networks and 6 nodes and 16 interactions for downDEmiR-upDEG regulatory networks. Using the STRING database, we established a protein-protein interaction network based on the overlapped DEGs between ONFH and non-ONFH. C5AR1, CDC27, CDC34, KAT2B, CPPED1, TFDP1, and MX2 were identified as the hub genes. The present study characterizes the miRNA profile, gene profile, and miRNA-mRNA regulatory network in ONFH, which may contribute to the interpretation of the pathogenesis of ONFH and the identification of novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets for ONFH.

The effects and potential applications of concentrated growth factor in dentin-pulp complex regeneration

The dentin-pulp complex is essential for the long-term integrity and viability of teeth but it is susceptible to damage caused by external factors. Because traditional approaches for preserving the dentin-pulp complex have various limitations, there is a need for novel methods for dentin-pulp complex reconstruction. The development of stem cell-based tissue engineering has given rise to the possibility of combining dental stem cells with a tissue-reparative microenvironment to promote dentin-pulp complex regeneration. Concentrated growth factor, a platelet concentrate, is a promising scaffold for the treatment of dentin-pulp complex disorders. Given its characteristics of autogenesis, convenience, usability, and biodegradability, concentrated growth factor has gained popularity in medical and dental fields for repairing bone defects and promoting soft-tissue healing. Numerous in vitro studies have demonstrated that concentrated growth factor can promote the proliferation and migration of dental stem cells. Here, we review the current state of knowledge on the effects of concentrated growth factor on stem cells and its potential applications in dentin-pulp complex regeneration.

Evidence-Supported HBO Therapy in Femoral Head Necrosis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Although many studies have shown that hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy can significantly improve symptoms and quality of life of patients affected by femoral head necrosis, this therapy is not worldwide approved yet. This meta-analysis was performed to evaluate its clinical effect. Relevant studies published before May 2020 were systematically searched using terms related to HBO and femoral head necrosis. Fixed and random-effects models were used to estimate the odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Subgroup analyses and publication bias tests were carried out to explore potential study heterogeneity and bias. Ten studies involving 353 controls and 368 HBO-treated cases were included, most of which were conducted on Asian population. The clinical effect in the HBO therapy group was 3.84 times higher than in the control group (OR = 3.84, 95% CI (2.10, 7.02), p < 0.00001). Subgroup analyses showed that the clinical effect of HBO therapy was statistically significant in the Asian subpopulation which represented most of the subjects (OR = 3.53, 95% CI (1.87, 6.64), p < 0.00001), but not in the non-Asian subpopulation, probably because of insufficient numerosity (OR = 7.41, 95% CI (0.73, 75.71), p = 0.09). The results of this meta-analysis suggest that patients with femoral head necrosis treated with HBO therapy can achieve a significant clinical improvement.

Effects of fibrous collagen/CDHA/hUCS biocomposites on bone tissue regeneration

Collagen- and bioceramic-based composites have been widely used in hard tissue engineering because they are analogous to the organic/inorganic constituents of native bones. However, biocomposites based on collagen and bioceramics show low mechanical stiffness and limited osteogenic activities. To elevate the low biophysical and biological activities, we have introduced a new biocomposite structure. Herein, we propose a biocomposite mimicking not only the physical structure of the extracellular matrix (ECM) structure but also the biochemical components of native bone tissues. Several components including fibrillated collagen, calcium-deficient hydroxyapatite (CDHA) obtained from α-tricalcium phosphate hydrolysis, and human umbilical cord serum (hUCS) were used to generate a unique structure of the biocomposite. The 3D-printed composites were topographically similar to the nanofibrous ECM and exhibited a mechanically stable structure. We also evaluated the in vitro biocompatibilities of the biocomposite using human adipose stem cells and found that the collagen/hUCS/CDHA scaffold accelerated the in vitro osteogenic differentiation of human adipose-derived stem cells and in vivo osteogenesis in a mastoid obliterated rat model.

Ameliorating effect of leukotriene receptor antagonist in multi-organ toxicity induced in rat offspring, a possible role for epidermal growth factor

Purpose: Nowadays, there is a dramatic increase in the interest of potential impact of consumer-relevant engineered nanoparticles on pregnancy.Materials and methods: This study investigated the possible protective effect of montelukast in neonatal organ toxicity induced by maternal exposure to silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in rats.Results: It was noticed that montelukast reduced serum urea, creatinine, renal caspase-3 immunoreactivity and IL-1β and increased total antioxidant capacity, as compared to AgNPs. In kidney and bone tissue, montelukast reduced oxidative stress parameters and TNF-α level that was increased with AgNPs. Surprisingly, montelukast administration increased epidermal growth factor (EGF) in bone and reduced it in kidney. Furthermore, as compared to AgNPs, montelukast improved histopathological picture of kidney and bone.Conclusions: In conclusion, montelukast antagonized the biochemical and histopathological changes occurred in kidneys and bones of rat offspring by maternal exposure to AgNPs, mostly by anti-oxidant, anti-apoptotic and anti-inflammatory actions with a possible role for EGF.

Development of systemic immune dysregulation in a rat trauma model of biomaterial-associated infection

Orthopedic biomaterial-associated infections remain a major clinical challenge, with Staphylococcus aureus being the most common pathogen. S. aureus biofilm formation enhances immune evasion and antibiotic resistance, resulting in a local, indolent infection that can persist long-term without symptoms before eventual hardware failure, bone non-union, or sepsis. Immune modulation is an emerging strategy to combat host immune evasion by S. aureus. However, most immune modulation strategies are focused on local immune responses at the site of infection, with little emphasis on understanding the infection-induced and orthopedic-related systemic immune responses of the host, and their role in local infection clearance and tissue regeneration. This study utilized a rat bone defect model to investigate how implant-associated infection affects the systemic immune response. Long-term systemic immune dysregulation was observed with a significant systemic decrease in T cells and a concomitant increase in immunosuppressive myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) compared to non-infected controls. Further, the control group exhibited a regulated and coordinated systemic cytokine response, which was absent in the infection group. Multivariate analysis revealed high levels of MDSCs to be most correlated with the infection group, while high levels of T cells were most correlated with the control group. Locally, the infection group had attenuated macrophage infiltration and increased levels of MDSCs in the local soft tissue compared to non-infected controls. These data reveal the widespread impacts of an orthopedic infection on both the local and the systemic immune responses, uncovering promising targets for diagnostics and immunotherapies that could optimize treatment strategies and ultimately improve patient outcomes.

Endothelial loss during the surgical procedure in saphenous veins harvested by open and endoscopic techniques in coronary artery bypass surgery

The patency of the vein graft in coronary artery bypass grafting could be dependent on the conventional open (vsO) or endoscopic (vsE) harvesting and on the hypoxic damage of endothelial cells. We aimed to evaluate both surgical techniques according to endothelial loss that occurs in the time between harvesting and implantation. Twenty-six saphenous veins were divided into vsO (n = 16) and vsE (n = 10) group. Three samples were taken from each vein. The first sample was taken after removal, the second before implantation of the distal part, and the third before the implantation of the proximal part, and they were stained with HE, Movat, and immunohistochemically with CD31. A significant loss of endothelial cells within both groups was found at the time of implantation of the distal and the proximal part of the vein graft compared to the endothelial cells at the time of harvesting. There were no significant differences in the endothelial loss between vsE and vsO groups at the time of harvesting and at the time before the implantation of the distal part. A higher number of endothelial cells was found in vsE group compared to vsO group at the time just before the implantation of the proximal part. The comparison of the implanted portions of vsE and vsO grafts to mammary arteries revealed a significant loss of endothelial cells only in vsO graft. We conclude that, at the time of implantation, the endothelial layer of the vein graft harvested endoscopically is more preserved than of the vein graft harvested openly.

Down-regulated microRNA-141 facilitates osteoblast activity and inhibits osteoclast activity to ameliorate osteonecrosis of the femoral head via up-regulating TGF-β2

Osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is a pathological process that initially occurs in the weight-bearing field of the femoral head. Due to the unknown pathogenesis, this study was for the investigation of the effect of microRNA-141 (miR-141) targeting transforming growth factor-β2 (TGF-β2) on regulating osteoblast activity and osteoclast activity in steroid-induced ONFH.Tissues of ONFH and normal femoral head were collected for detecting the expression of miR-141 and TGF-β2. A rat model of ONFH was constructed by injection of hormones, and transfected with miR-141 inhibitors and overexpressed TGF-β2. The apoptosis of bone cells was detected by TUNEL staining. The expression of osteoprotegerin (OPG), osteoprotegerin ligand (OPGL), Bcl-2, Bax, Runx2, BMP2 and RANK were detected.Highly expressed miR-141 and lowly expressed TGF-β2 existed in femoral head tissues in ONFH. Inhibited miR-141 resulted in elevated TGF-β2 in femoral head tissues in ONFH of rats. Depressed miR-141 or overexpressed TGF-β2 inhibited the apoptosis of bone cells of rats with ONFH and induced elevated OPG, Bcl-2, BMP2, Runx2 and declined OPGL, Bax and RANK expression in the femoral head tissues of rats with ONFH.Altogether, we find that down-regulated miR-141 promotes osteoblast activity and inhibits osteoclast activity to ameliorate ONFH via up-regulated TGF-β2 expression.

Discovery and validation an eight-biomarker serum gene signature for the diagnosis of steroid-induced osteonecrosis of the femoral head

Steroid-induced osteonecrosis of the femoral head (SONFH) is difficult to be diagnosed at the early stages when it can be administrated effectively. Yet, to date no study has been performed to identify diagnostic biomarkers and to develop diagnostic models for SONFH. In the current study, a total of 60 SONFH patients with Association Research Circulation Osseous (ARCO) stages I-IV, and 20 controls were enrolled and divided into the discovery and validation cohorts. The serum samples were collected and the gene expression profiles were detected by microarray analysis based on the discovery cohort. Then, eight genes (BIRC3, CBL, CCR5, LYN, PAK1, PTEN, RAF1 and TLR4) were identified as the candidate serum biomarkers of SONFH due to the significant differential expression patterns and the topological importance in the interaction network of SONFH-related differentially expressed genes. Functionally, these candidate serum biomarkers were significantly involved into several pathological processes during SONFH progression, such as the immune regulation and inflammation, bone metabolism and angiogenesis. After that, a prediction model for the diagnosis of SONFH was constructed using Partial least squares regression based on the serum levels of the candidate biomarkers. Notably, both the 10-fold cross-validation and the independent dataset test demonstrated the good performance of this model. In conclusion, our study discovered eight promising serum biomarkers and developed the multi-biomarker-based prediction model as a new, potential and non-invasive diagnostic tool for the detection of SONFH, as well as benefit the administration of SONFH in a daily clinical setting.

Epidermal growth factor protects against myocardial ischaemia reperfusion injury through activating Nrf2 signalling pathway

Alleviating the oxidant stress associated with myocardial ischaemia reperfusion has been demonstrated as a potential therapeutic approach to limit ischaemia reperfusion (I/R)-induced cardiac damage. It is reported that EGFR/erbB2 signalling is an important cardiac survival pathway in cardiac function and activation of EGFR has a cardiovascular effect in global ischaemia. Epidermal growth factor (EGF), a typical EGFR ligand, was considered to have a significant role in activating EGFR. However, no evidence has been published whether exogenous EGF has protective effects on myocardial ischaemia reperfusion. This study aims to investigate the effects of EGF in I/R-induced heart injury and to demonstrate its mechanisms. H9c2 cells challenged with H₂O₂ were used for in vitro biological activity and mechanistic studies. The malondialdehyde (MDA) and Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) levels in H9c2 cells were determined, and the cell viability was assessed by MTT assay. Myocardial I/R mouse administrated with or without EGF were used for in vivo studies. Pretreatment of H9c2 cells with EGF activated Nrf2 signalling pathway, attenuated H₂O₂-increased MDA and H₂O₂-reduced SOD level, followed by the inhibition of H₂O₂-induced cell death. In in vivo animal models of myocardial I/R, administration of EGF reduced infarct size and myocardial apoptosis. These data support that EGF decreases oxidative stress and attenuates myocardial ischaemia reperfusion injury via activating Nrf2.
