The association between ABO blood group distribution and peptic ulcer disease: a cross-sectional study from Ethiopia

ABO, Lewis blood group systems and secretory status with H.pylori infection in yemeni dyspeptic patients: a cross- sectional study

BACKGROUND

The ABO and Lewis blood group antigens are potential factors in susceptibility to H. pylori infection. This research aimed to examine the prevalence of Helicobater pylori (H.pylori) infection and its association with ABO, Lewis blood group systems, and secretory status in Yemeni symptomatic patients.

METHODS

In a cross-sectional study, 103 patients referred for endoscopy due to dyspepsia were included. H pylori infection was assessed using stool antigen and serum antibody rapid tests. ABO and Lewis blood group systems were examined using hemagglutination assay. Saliva samples were investigated for identification of the secretory phenotype using hemagglutination inhibition test.

RESULTS

The prevalence of H. pylori infection was (80.6%), with a higher rate of infection in females than males. The ABO blood groups were found to be significantly different between males and females (p = 0.047). The O blood group was prevalent among H. pylori patients, especially secretors. There was a significant association between ABO blood groups and H. pylori infection (p = 0.001). The Le (a + b+) phenotype was the most common, followed by Le (a + b-), Le (a-b+), and Le (a-b-). Lewis blood group systems and secretory status of symptomatic patients were not associated with H. pylori infection. The results showed that serum Ab test for H. pylori achieved poor sensitivity (68%), specificity of 55%; positive predictive value (PPV) 86%, negative predictive value (NPV) 29% and accuracy 65.1%.

CONCLUSION

The prevalence of H. pylori infection was high in Yemeni patients. This infection was linked to the O and Le (a + b+) secretor phenotype. The H. pylori stool Ag test is the most reliable noninvasive diagnostic method for detecting H. pylori infection.

Relationship between COVID-19 infection and ABO and Rh blood group systems

Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine whether there is a relationship between COVID-19 infection and ABO and Rh blood groups. Materials and Methods: 1360 patients with positive SARS-CoV-2 RNA test between April 2020 and March 2022 and 80219 healthy controls whose blood groups were determined before March 2020 were included in this study. Patients were classified according to disease severity as mild, moderate, severe and critical. Results: Patient and control groups were matched in terms of age and gender using case-control matched method. 1360 patients and 1161 controls were included in the analysis. Of the patients, 42.1% (n=572) had mild, 41.5% (n=564) moderate, 13.8% (n=187) severe and 2.7% (n=37) critical course of infection. It was observed that patients with blood group A were 1.33 times more at risk (OR: 1.33, 95%Cl: 1.12-1.56) for the development of COVID-19 infection compared to patients with other blood groups. No relationship was found between ABO and Rh blood groups and severe-critical COVID-19 disease, need for intensive care and mortality. However, when patients are divided into two groups as mild and non-mild (moderate, severe, critical); the frequency of having O and B blood groups was found to be significantly higher in non-mild cases than in mild cases ( (53.3% and 46.7%), (64.5% and 35.5%, respectively). Conclusion: In our study, while A blood group was found to be at risk for the development of COVID-19 infection, no relationship was found between Rh blood groups and susceptibility to the disease. In addition, the rate of O and B blood groups was found to be higher in patients who did not have mild disease.

Associations between seroprevalence of Helicobacter pylori and ABO/rhesus blood group antigens in healthy blood donors in southwest Iran

Objective

To investigate correlations between ABO/rhesus (Rh) blood group antigens and anti-Helicobacter pylori and anti-cytotoxin-associated gene A (CagA) seropositivity in blood donors.

Methods

A total of 311 blood donors were enrolled. ABO and Rh blood groups were determined using hemagglutination tests. Specific anti-H. pylori IgG and anti-CagA IgG antibodies in sera were quantitated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Correlations between blood groups and anti-H. pylori and anti-CagA seropositivity were evaluated using the Chi-square test.

Results

O+ was the most frequent blood type (38%, n = 118). Anti-H. pylori IgG seropositivity was observed in 240 (77.2%) blood donors, while anti-CagA IgG seropositivity was observed in 132 (42.5%) blood donors. Although seropositivity rates for both anti-H. pylori and anti-CagA IgG were higher in individuals with blood type O, no statistically significant associations were observed between seropositivity and any ABO/Rh blood groups.

Conclusion

Individuals with blood type O may have higher rates of H. pylori seropositivity.

Association of ABO blood group and antituberculosis drug-induced liver injury: A case-control study from a Chinese Han population

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE

Antituberculosis drug-induced liver injury (ATLI) is a serious adverse drug reaction, and its pathogenic mechanism is still largely unknown. Rifampin (RIF) has been reported to cause haemolysis due to the production of drug-dependent antibodies, and haemolysis results in an increased level of free haem, which affects the function of hepatocytes. Blood group determinants can act as specific receptor sites for drug-antibody complexes, causing erythrocyte destruction in the presence of RIF. RIF-induced immune haemolysis may be a potential mechanism for ATLI. Thus, the study aimed to explore the role of ABO blood group systems in Chinese ATLI patients.

METHODS

A 1:4 matched case-control study was conducted among 146 ATLI cases and 584 controls. Multivariable conditional logistic regression and Cox proportional regression were used to estimate the association between ABO blood group and risk of ATLI by odds ratio (OR), hazards ratio (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), and liver disease history and taking hepatoprotectant were used as covariates.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Patients in the A, B, AB and non-O blood groups had a significantly higher risk of ATLI than those in the O blood group (OR = 1.832, 95% CI: 1.126-2.983, P = .015; OR = 1.751, 95% CI: 1.044-2.937, P = .034; OR = 2.059, 95% CI: 1.077-3.938, P = .029; OR = 1.822, 95% CI: 1.173-2.831, P = .007, respectively). After considering the time of ALTI occurrence, similar results were found in the A, B, AB and non-O blood groups (HR = 1.676, 95% CI: 1.072-2.620, P = .024; HR = 1.620, 95% CI: 1.016-2.584, P = .043; HR = 2.010, 95% CI: 1.130-3.576, P = .018; HR = 1.701, 95% CI: 1.138-2.542, P = .010, respectively). Furthermore, subgroup analysis also detected a significant association between ABO blood group and ATLI in patients taking RIF (P < .05). However, no significant difference was observed in patients not taking RIF (P > .05).

WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION

The present study is the first to evaluate the role of ABO blood group systems in Chinese ATLI cases. Based on the present matched case-control study, the ABO blood group may be associated with susceptibility to ATLI in the Chinese antituberculosis population, especially in patients with blood groups A, B and AB who are taking RIF.
