Air Pollution Is Associated with Poor Cognitive Function in Taiwanese Adults

The Effects of Polyphenol Supplementation on BDNF, Cytokines and Cognition in Trained Male Cyclists following Acute Ozone Exposure during High-Intensity Cycling

The neurotoxic effects of ozone exposure are related to neuroinflammation and increases in reactive oxygen species (ROS). This study aimed to assess inflammation, Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), and cognition in healthy male cyclists following polyphenol supplementation and exercise in an ozone-polluted environment. Ten male cyclists initially completed a maximal incremental test and maximal effort 4 km time trial in ambient air. Cyclists then completed two trials in an ozone-polluted environment (0.25 ppm) following 7 days of supplementation with either polyphenol (POLY) or placebo (PL). Experimental trials consisted of a three-stage submaximal test followed by a 4 km time trial. Blood samples were drawn pre- and post-exercise, and analyzed for BDNF, interleukin 6 (IL-6), interleukin 10 (IL-10) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α). The Stroop test and serial subtraction task were performed before ozone exposure and again after the 4 km TT. Serum BDNF increased post-exercise (p < 0.0001), and positive differences were observed post-exercise in the ozone POLY group relative to PL (p = 0.013). Plasma IL-6 increased post-exercise (p = 0.0015), and TNF-α increased post-ozone exposure (p = 0.0018). There were no differences in Stroop or serial subtraction tasks pre- or post-exercise. Exercise increases BDNF in ozone.

Association Between Long-Term Exposure to Ambient Air Pollution and the Risk of Mild Cognitive Impairment in a Chinese Urban Area: A Case-Control Study

Background

As a prodromal stage of dementia, significant emphasis has been placed on the identification of modifiable risks of mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Research has indicated a correlation between exposure to air pollution and cognitive function in older adults. However, few studies have examined such an association among the MCI population inChina.

Objective

We aimed to explore the association between air pollution exposure and MCI risk from the Hubei Memory and Aging Cohort Study.

Methods

We measured four pollutants from 2015 to 2018, 3 years before the cognitive assessment of the participants. Logistic regression models were employed to calculate odds ratios (ORs) to assess the relationship between air pollutants and MCI risk.

Results

Among 4,205 older participants, the adjusted ORs of MCI risk for the highest quartile of PM2.5, PM10, O3, and SO2 were 1.90 (1.39, 2.62), 1.77 (1.28, 2.47), 0.56 (0.42, 0.75), and 1.18 (0.87, 1.61) respectively, compared with the lowest quartile. Stratified analyses indicated that such associations were found in both males and females, but were more significant in older participants.

Conclusions

Our findings are consistent with the growing evidence suggesting that air pollution increases the risk of mild cognitive decline, which has considerable guiding significance for early intervention of dementia in the older population. Further studies in other populations and broader geographical areas are warranted to validate these findings.

Effect of indoor air quality on the association of long-term exposure to low-level air pollutants with cognition in older adults

BACKGROUND

How indoor air quality affects the temporal associations of long-term exposure to low-level air pollutants with cognition remains unclear.

METHODS

This cohort study (2011-2019) included 517 non-demented older adults at baseline with four repeated cognitive assessments. The time-varying exposure to PM2.5, PM10, NO2, SO2, CO, and O3 was estimated for each participant from 1994 to 2019. Indoor air quality was determined by ventilation status and daily indoor time. Generalized linear mixed models were used to analyze the association of air pollutants, indoor air quality, and cognition adjusting for important covariates.

RESULTS

Over time, per 2.97 μg/m3 (i.e., an interquartile range) increment of PM2.5 was associated with the poor performance of memory (Z score of a cognitive test, βˆ:-0.14), attention (βˆ:-0.13), and executive function (βˆ:-0.20). Similarly, per 2.05 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5-10 was associated with poor global cognition [adjusted odds ratio (aOR): 1.48, βˆ:-0.28], attention (βˆ:-0.07), and verbal fluency (βˆ:-0.09); per 4.94 μg/m3 increase in PM10 was associated with poor global cognition (aOR: 1.78; βˆ:-0.37). In contrast, per 2.74 ppb increase in O3 was associated with better global cognition (βˆ:0.36 to 0.47). These associations became more evident in participants with poor ventilation or short daily indoor time (<12.5 h/day). For global cognition, the exposure to a 10-μg/m3 increment in PM2.5, PM2.5-10, and PM10 corresponded to 1.4, 5.8, and 2.8 years of aging, respectively.

CONCLUSION

This study demonstrated how indoor air quality in areas using clean fuels differentially affected the associations of long-term exposure to low-level air pollutants with cognition. Tightening air quality standards may help prevent dementia.

Air pollution is associated with faster cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease

OBJECTIVE

Although chronic exposure to air pollution is associated with an increased risk of dementia in normal elderlies, the effect of chronic exposure to air pollution on the rates of cognitive decline in Alzheimer's disease (AD) has not been elucidated.

METHODS

In this longitudinal study, a total of 269 patients with mild cognitive impairment or early dementia due to AD with the evidence of brain β-amyloid deposition were followed-up for a mean period of 4 years. Five-year normalized hourly cumulative exposure value of each air pollutant, such as carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2 ), sulfur dioxide (SO2 ), and particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10 ), was computed based on nationwide air pollution database. The effects of chronic exposure to air pollution on longitudinal cognitive decline rate were evaluated using linear mixed models.

RESULTS

Higher chronic exposure to SO2 was associated with a faster decline in memory score, whereas chronic exposure to CO, NO2 , and PM10 were not associated with the rate of cognitive decline. Higher chronic exposure to PM2.5 was associated with a faster decline in visuospatial score in apolipoprotein E ε4 carriers. These effects remained significant even after adjusting for potential confounders.

INTERPRETATION

Our findings suggest that chronic exposure to SO2 and PM2.5 is associated with faster clinical progression in AD.

Association between short- and long-term exposures to air pollutants and internalizing/externalizing behavior in children aged 4 to 7 years

The effects of air pollutants on psychological health have attracted increasing attention worldwide. However, there is limited evidence on the association between air pollution and children's psychological development. This study explores the association between short- and long-term exposures to air pollutants and children's internalizing and externalizing behaviors. A total of 2303 children of 4-7 years were included in this study. We assessed their behavior using the Child Behavior Checklist (4-16 years). The prevalence of internalizing and externalizing behavior was 4.77% and 4.43%, respectively. For short-term exposure, CO pollution was associated with children's internalizing behaviors, with each 1 mg/m³ increment leading to an odds ratio (OR) of 1.063 (95% CI 1.005, 1.124), 1.065 (95% CI 1.009, 1.124), 1.067 (95% CI 1.007, 1.131), and 1.122 (95% CI 1.018, 1.236) at lag04, lag05, lag06, and lag0120, respectively. O₃ (per 1 g[Formula: see text]/m³) was negatively associated with internalizing problems at lag2 [OR = 0.991 (95% CI 0.983, 0.999)]. NO₂ (per 1 g[Formula: see text]/m³) was significantly associated with externalizing behaviors, with the ORs of 1.067 (95% CI 1.024, 1.111) at lag060 and 1.060 (95% CI 1.010, 1.113) at lag0120. For long-term exposure, it indicated that 1-year exposure to CO (per 1 mg/m³) and PM_2.5 (per 1 g[Formula: see text]/m³) was positively associated with internalizing behavioral risk [OR = 1.724 (95% CI 1.187, 2.504); PM_2.5: OR = 1.236 (95% CI 1.114, 1.371)], whereas NO₂ (per 1 g[Formula: see text]/m³) exposure was associated with an increased risk of externalizing behavior [OR = 1.123 (95% CI 1.003, 1.256)]. In addition, the interaction analysis showed that boys were at a higher risk of abnormal behaviors associated with long-term exposure to CO, PM_2.5, and NO₂. Our findings reveal a potential link between air pollution exposure and abnormal behaviors in kindergarten children after short-/long-term exposure, which is an essential supplement to the studies on the association between air pollution and children's behavioral problems.

Global ambient particulate matter pollution and neurodegenerative disorders: a systematic review of literature and meta-analysis

Previous studies on particulate matter (PM) exposure and neurodegenerative disorders showed inconsistent results, and few studies systematically examined the long-term effect of PM on neurodegenerative diseases, including all-cause dementia, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, vascular dementia, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and cognitive function decline. We systematically searched for published studies in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science up to October 31, 2022. To facilitate a comparison of effect sizes from different studies, we standardized units across studies to a 10 μg/m³ increase for PM. Heterogeneity was assessed by Cochran's Q test and I² statistic. Publication bias was evaluated using funnel plots and Egger's tests. Subgroup analysis, meta-regression, and sensitivity analysis were performed. The protocol for this review was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42021277112). Of the 3403 originally identified studies, a meta-analysis was finally performed in 49 studies. The results showed that there was a significant positive association between long-term PM_2.5 exposure and all-cause dementia, Alzheimer's disease as well as Parkinson's disease, with pooled OR of 1.30 (95%CI: 1.14, 1.47, I² = 99.3%), 1.65 (95%CI: 1.37, 1.94, I² = 98.2%), and 1.17 (95%CI: 1.00, 1.33, I² = 91.8%). A positive association between PM₁₀ and vascular dementia was observed (OR = 1.12, 95%CI: 1.04, 1.21, I² = 0.0%). Association between PM exposure and decreased cognitive function score was found. Our results highlight the important role of PM pollution, particularly PM_2.5, in the risk of age-related neurodegenerative diseases and cognitive function decline.

Different components of air pollutants and neurological disorders

The harmful effects of air pollution can cause various diseases. Most research on the hazards of air pollution focuses on lung and cardiovascular diseases. In contrast, the impact of air pollution on neurological disorders is not widely recognized. Air pollution can cause various neurological conditions and diseases, such as neural inflammation, neurodegeneration, and cerebrovascular barrier disorder; however, the mechanisms underlying the neurological diseases induced by various components of air pollutants remain unclear. The present paper summarizes the effects of different components of air pollutants, including particulate matter, ozone, sulfur oxides, carbon oxides, nitrogen oxides, and heavy metals, on the nervous system and describes the impact of various air pollutants on neurological disorders, providing ideas for follow-up research.

Effect of Short- to Long-Term Exposure to Ambient Particulate Matter on Cognitive Function in a Cohort of Middle-Aged and Older Adults: KoGES

Exposure to ambient air pollution and its threat to human health is a global concern, especially in the elderly population. Therefore, more in-depth studies are required to understand the extent of the harmful effects of particulate matter (PM) based on duration and levels of exposure. An investigation was conducted to determine the association between short- (1-14 days), medium- (1, 3, and 6 months), and long-term (1, 2, and 3 years) exposure to air pollutants (PM_2.5 and PM₁₀) and cognitive function among Koreans (4175 participants, mean age 67.8 years, 55.2% women) aged over 50 years. Higher levels of PM_2.5 exposure for short to long term and PM₁₀ exposure for medium to long term were found to be associated with decreased cognitive function, as indicated by lower scores of the Mini-Mental State Examination adopted in Korean (K-MMSE). There were significant effect modifications by sex, age group, alcohol consumption, physical activity, and smoking status in the association between long-term PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ exposure and cognitive function. These findings, which underscore the importance of the efforts to reduce the exposure levels and durations of air pollutants, especially in the vulnerable elderly population, provide evidence for establishing more stringent policies for air pollution regulations.

Air pollution associated with cognitive decline by the mediating effects of sleep cycle disruption and changes in brain structure in adults

The effects of air pollution on sleep and dementia remain unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of air pollution on cognitive function as mediated by the sleep cycle. A cross-sectional study design was conducted to recruit 4866 subjects on which PSG had been performed. Fifty of them were further given a cognitive function evaluation by the MMSE and CASI as well as brain images by CT and MRI. Associations of 1-year air pollution parameters with sleep parameters, cognitive function, and brain structure were examined. We observed that O₃ was associated with a decrease in arousal, an increase in the N1 stage, and a decrease in the N2 stage of sleep. NO₂ was associated with an increase in the N1 stage, a decrease in the N2 stage, and an increase in REM. PM_2.5 was associated with a decrease in the N1 stage, increases in the N2 and N3 stages, and a decrease in REM. The N1 and N2 stages were associated with cognitive decline, but REM was associated with an increase in cognitive function. The N1 stage was a mediator of the effects of PM_2.5 on the concentration domain of the MMSE. O₃ was associated with an increase in the pars orbitalis volume of the left brain. NO₂ was associated with increases in the rostral middle frontal volume, supramarginal gyrus volume, and transverse temporal volume of the left brain, and the pars opercularis volume of the right brain. PM_2.5 was associated with increases in the pars triangularis volume of the left brain and the fusiform thickness of the right brain. In conclusion, we observed that air pollution was associated with cognitive decline by mediating effects on the sleep cycle with changes in the brain structure in controlling executive, learning, and language functions in adults.

Air Pollution, Ultrafine Particles, and Your Brain: Are Combustion Nanoparticle Emissions and Engineered Nanoparticles Causing Preventable Fatal Neurodegenerative Diseases and Common Neuropsychiatric Outcomes?

Exposure to particulate matter (PM) pollution damages the human brain. Fossil fuel burning for transportation energy accounts for a significant fraction of urban air and climate pollution. While current United States (US) standards limit PM ambient concentrations and emissions, they do not regulate explicitly ultrafine particles (UFP ≤ 100 nm in diameter). There is a growing body of evidence suggesting UFP may play a bigger role inflicting adverse health impacts than has been recognized, and in this perspective, we highlight effects on the brain, particularly of young individuals. UFP penetrate the body through nasal/olfactory, respiratory, gastrointestinal, placenta, and brain-blood barriers, translocating in the bloodstream and reaching the glymphatic and central nervous systems. We discuss one case study. The 21.8 million residents in the Metropolitan Mexico City (MMC) are regularly exposed to fine PM (PM_2.5) above the US 12 μg/m³ annual average standards. Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), and TAR DNA-binding protein (TDP-43) pathologies and nanoparticles (NP ≤ 50 nm in diameter) in critical brain organelles have been documented in MMC children and young adult autopsies. MMC young residents have cognitive and olfaction deficits, altered gait and equilibrium, brainstem auditory evoked potentials, and sleep disorders. Higher risk of AD and vascular dementia associated with residency close to high traffic roadways have been documented. The US is not ready or prepared to adopt ambient air quality or emission standards for UFP and will continue to focus regulations only on the total mass of PM_2.5 and PM₁₀. Thus, this approach raises the question: are we dropping the ball? As research continues to answer the remaining questions about UFP sources, exposures, impacts, and controls, the precautionary principle should call us to accelerate and expand policy interventions to abate or eliminate UFP emissions and to mitigate UFP exposures. For residents of highly polluted cities, particularly in the developing world where there is likely older and dirtier vehicles, equipment, and fuels in use and less regulatory oversight, we should embark in a strong campaign to raise public awareness of the associations between high PM pollution, heavy traffic, UFP, NP, and neuropsychiatric outcomes, including dementia. Neurodegenerative diseases evolving from childhood in polluted, anthropogenic, and industrial environments ought to be preventable.

The Effects of Fruit-Derived Polyphenols on Cognition and Lung Function in Healthy Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Polyphenols are plant derived nutrients that influence oxidative stress and inflammation and therefore may have positive benefits on cognition and lung function. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effects of fruit derived polyphenol intakes on cognition and lung capacity in healthy adults. In August 2020 and October 2021, Medline and Google Scholar were used to search for relevant studies examining the effects of fruit derived polyphenol intakes on cognition and/or lung function in healthy adults (<70 years old). Fourteen studies related to cognition (409 healthy subjects) and seven lung/respiratory studies (20,788 subjects) were used for the systematic review using the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The meta-analysis (using six cognition and three lung function studies) indicated a protective effect on lung function from dietary intakes of fruit-derived polyphenols. Neither a benefit nor decrement from fruit-derived polyphenol intakes were detected for cognition. Human intervention trials examining the effects of polyphenol supplementation on lung function in healthy adults are scarce and intervention studies are warranted. More conclusive results are needed to provide recommendations for polyphenol supplementation to support aspects of cognition.
