Abstract
Background: Chronic inflammation is believed to play a key role in managing cardiovascular disease (CVD) and glycometabolism, but the specific effects remain unclear. The subclinical features of CVD events and hyperglycemia linked to inflammatory status were evaluated in this study. In addition, independent factors associated with inflammatory status were identified. Methods: Inflammatory status was measured by high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), CVD events estimated by carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT), and hyperglycemia determined by glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c). Univariate analysis was performed to identify the characteristics of HbA1c-defined normoglycemia, prediabetes, and diabetes, whereas multivariate linear regression analysis was conducted to identify independent factors that correlated with hs-CRP levels. Results: Compared with HbA1c-defined normoglycemia, individuals with prediabetes and diabetes had significantly higher risks of cIMT thickening [risk ratio (RR) was 2.21 and 2.40, respectively], carotid atherosclerosis (RR was 2.29 and 3.04, respectively), and carotid plaque (RR was 2.15 and 2.63, respectively). Diabetes had higher risks of carotid atherosclerosis (RR was 1.33) and carotid plaque (RR was 1.22) than prediabetes. Increasing prevalence of cIMT thickening, atherosclerosis, and plaque was correlated with hs-CRP levels rising. There was a notable linear relationship between HbA1c and hs-CRP levels (R2 = 0.8685). In addition, both men and women showed an independent correlation of hs-CRP levels with HbA1c and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, whereas men also had thyroid-stimulating hormone and women had age as an independent factor. Conclusions: Chronic inflammation links hyperglycemia to CVD events, and the relevant risk factors would be potential targets for alleviating inflammation and delaying the progression of the atherogenic process.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) is a novel biomarker associated with atherosclerosis, and an important risk factor for atherosclerosis, but its relation with cardiovascular prognosis in prediabetic patients with unstable angina pectoris (UAP) is still uncertain. METHODS This study included 1096 prediabetic patients with UAP who were subjected to follow-up for a maximum of 30 months, with cardiac death, refractory angina, and non-fatal myocardial infarction (MI) being the primary cardiovascular endpoints. RESULTS A significantly increased AIP was observed for the group with primary cardiovascular endpoints. Kaplan-Meier curves corresponding to these endpoints revealed pronounced differences between these two AIP groups (Log-rank P < 0.001). Multivariate Cox proportional hazards analyses highlighted AIP as being independent related to this primary endpoint (HR 1.308, 95% CI: 1.213-1.412, P < 0.001). AIP addition to the baseline risk model improved the prediction of the primary endpoint (AUC: baseline model, 0.622, vs. baseline model + AIP, 0.739, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS AIP could be used to predict cardiovascular events in prediabetic individuals with UAP.

Abstract
Objective Dyslipidemia is a key risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD). This study aimed to investigate the correlation between the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) and the severity of CAD. Methods 2,491 patients were enrolled in this study and analyzed retrospectively, including 665 non-CAD patients as the control group and 1,826 CAD patients. The CAD patients were classified into three subgroups according to tertiles of SYNTAX score (SS). Non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (Non-HDL-C) was defined as serum total cholesterol (TC) minus serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (Non-HDL-C), atherogenic index (AI) was defined as the ratio of non-HDL-C to HDL-C; AIP was defined as the logarithm of the ratio of the concentration of triglyceride (TG) to HDL-C; lipoprotein combine index (LCI) was defined as the ratio of TC∗TG∗ low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL)to HDL-C; Castelli Risk Index I (CRI I) was defined as the ratio of TC to HDL-C; Castelli Risk Index II (CRI II) was defined as the ratio of LDL-C to HDL-C. Results The levels of AIP (P < 0.001), AI (P < 0.001), and LCI (P = 0.013) were higher in the CAD group compared with the non-CAD group. The Spearman correlation analysis showed that AIP (r = 0.075, P < 0.001), AI (r = 0.132, P < 0.001), and LCI (r = 0.072, P = 0.001) were positively correlated with SS. The multivariate logistic regression model showed CRI I (OR: 1.11, 95% CI: 1.03-1.19, P = 0.005), CRI II (OR: 1.26, 95% CI: 1.15-1.39, P < 0.001), AI (OR: 1.28, 95% CI: 1.17-1.40, P < 0.001), AIP (OR: 2.06, 95% CI: 1.38-3.07, P < 0.001), and LCI (OR: 1.01, 95% CI: 1.01-1.02, P < 0.001) were independent predictors of severity of CAD After adjusting various confounders. Conclusion CRI I, CRI II, AIP, AI, and LCI were independent predictors of the severity of CAD, which could be used as a biomarker for the evaluation of the severity of CAD.

Abstract
(1) Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) contributes to cardiovascular disease and related mortality through the insidious effects of insulin resistance and chronic inflammation. Mitral annular calcification (MAC) is one such degenerative process promoted by T2DM. (2) Methods: This is a post hoc analysis of insulin resistance, inflammation, and hepatic steatosis markers in T2DM patients without atherosclerotic manifestations, but with incidental echocardiographic detection of mild MAC. (3) Results: 138 consenting patients were 49.3% men, 57.86 years old, with a history of T2DM of 6.16 years and HbA1c 8.06%, of whom sixty had mild MAC (43.47%). The statistically significant differences between patients with/without MAC were higher HOMA C-peptide and C-peptide index for insulin resistance, higher TNF-α for inflammation, and lower estimated glomerular filtration rate. High-sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP) was significantly associated with insulin resistance and the strength of the relationship was higher in the MAC group. Predictive of MAC were TNF-α, HOMA C-peptide, and especially hepatic steatosis and hypertension. (4) Conclusions: MAC was more prevalent than reported in the literature. Insulin resistance and inflammation were predictive of MAC, but significant markers differ across studies. Widely available routine tests and echocardiographic assessments are useful in the early identification of mitral annular calcifications in diabetes patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Imbalance in blood levels of trace elements is independent risk factor for metabolic syndrome (MetS), type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and its complications. This study investigated plasma and erythrocyte levels of copper, magnesium, zinc, and their correlations with biochemical components of the MetS in T2DM patients compared to the healthy controls. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH Forty men recently diagnosed T2DM with MetS without complications and thirty six age-matched healthy controls were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Plasma and erythrocyte levels of selected elements were measured by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy. FINDINGS/RESULTS The results of the present study showed significantly lower plasma levels of copper, magnesium, and zinc and lower erythrocytes copper in the patients' group compared to the controls; while erythrocyte levels of magnesium and zinc were not significantly different between the two groups. Significant negative correlations were observed between plasma levels of copper with waist and hip circumferences, waist to hip ratio, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, fasting blood glucose, and glycated hemoglobin levels in all subjects; while erythrocyte copper levels showed significant negative correlation with triglyceride, and erythrocyte zinc was positively correlated with diastolic blood pressure and negatively with triglyceride. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS Alterations of trace elements may have a significant role in the pathogenesis of MetS and T2DM patients. It is suggested that the body status of copper, magnesium, and zinc might be significantly correlated with components of MetS in T2DM patients; and plasma copper levels may be correlated with complications of type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
We evaluated the predictive power of the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) for coronary artery disease (CAD) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). A total of 3278 patients who underwent coronary angiography were consecutively enrolled, including 2052 patients with CAD and 1226 patients with T2DM but without CAD. Patients in the CAD group had higher levels of triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, AIP and a lower level of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). In correlation analyses, AIP correlated positively with body mass index, log (homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance), TG, remnant lipoprotein cholesterol, non-HDL-C, but negatively with age and HDL-C. Multivariate logistic regression analyses demonstrated that AIP was an independent risk factor for CAD in diabetic patients and was validated by multiple models. Furthermore, the ORs for CAD risk were raised with increasing AIP quartiles; ORs of AIP quartiles Q2-Q4 compared with Q1 were 1.56, 1.70, and 2.22, respectively (Ps < .001), which suggested AIP was the lipid parameter that most strongly associated with incident CAD. In conclusion, AIP is a powerful and reliable biomarker for predicting CAD risk beyond individual lipid profiles in patients with T2DM.

Abstract
Background The concurrence of metabolic syndrome (MS) and diabetes mellitus (DM) is increasing worldwide. The long-term complications of these chronic diseases are a threat to patients' well-being. Oxidative stress is involved in the pathogenesis of several diseases. To understand the basic pathophysiological mechanisms of Type-2 DM (T2DM) and its related complications, we aimed to investigate the oxidant/antioxidant status and Na+-K+ ATPase activity in T2DM with MS. Materials and Methods A population of ninety individuals including fifty patients diagnosed with T2DM and MS, but without overt diabetes complications, and forty individuals without T2DM or MS as control group participated in this study. Plasma malondialdehyde (MDA), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and Na+-K+ ATPase activity were assessed by standard laboratory methods. Results Plasma MDA in patients group was statistically significantly higher than that of controls (P ≤ 0.05). Whereas, Na+-K+ ATPase activity was statistically significantly lower in patient group (P ≤ 0.05). TAC, CAT, SOD, and GPx enzyme activities were not statistically significantly different between two groups (P > 0.05). Results from the patient group showed positive correlations between CAT activity and triglyceride and positive correlations between GPx activity and weight, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference. In addition, there was a positive correlation between MDA results with high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) and total cholesterol and a negative correlation with TAC, BMI, and weight (P ≤ 0.05) in controls. Conclusion Because T2DM patients were without any vascular complications, antioxidant defense results may reflect the lack of progression of diabetes complications in these patients. These results emphasize the need for initial and continued assessment of cardiovascular disease risks in diabetic individuals. Implementation of timely interventions may improve the management of diabetes and prevent the progression of diabetes complications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Accumulating evidence has implicated insulin resistance and inflammation in the pathophysiology of cognitive impairments associated with neuropsychiatric disorders. This post-hoc analysis based on a placebo-controlled trial investigated the effect of inflammation (indexed by CRP) and metabolic risk factors on cognitive performance in patients with schizophrenia treated with lurasidone. METHODS Acutely exacerbated patients with schizophrenia were randomized to lurasidone (80 or 160 mg/day), quetiapine XR 600 mg/day, or placebo. A wide range CRP test and a cognitive assessment using the CogState computerized battery were performed at baseline and week 6 study endpoint. Associations between log-transformed CRP, high density lipoprotein (HDL), homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and treatment response were evaluated. RESULTS CRP combined with HDL, triglyceride-to-HDL (TG/HDL) ratio, or HOMA-IR at study baseline were significant moderators of the improvement in cognitive performance associated with lurasidone 160 mg/day (vs. placebo) treatment (p < .05). Greater placebo-corrected treatment effect size on the CogState composite score was observed for patients in the lurasidone 160 mg/day treatment group who had either low CRP and high HDL (d = 0.43), or low CRP and low HOMA-IR (d = 0.46). Interactive relationships between CRP, HDL, TG/HDL, HOMA-IR and the antipsychotic efficacy of lurasidone or quetiapine XR were not significant. There were no significant associations between antipsychotic treatment and changes in CRP level at study endpoint. CONCLUSIONS Findings of this post-hoc analysis based on a placebo-controlled trial in patients with schizophrenia suggest that baseline CRP level combined with measures of metabolic risk significantly moderated the improvement in cognitive performance associated with lurasidone 160 mg/day (vs. placebo) treatment. Our findings underscore the importance of maintaining a low metabolic risk profile in patients with schizophrenia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Malonic aciduria (MA, OMIM#248360) is an extremely rare inherited metabolic disorder caused by the deficiency of malonyl-CoA decarboxylase. The phenotype exhibited by patients with MA is variable, but may include symptoms, such as developmental delay in early childhood, seizures, vomiting, metabolic acidosis, hypoglycemia, ketosis, and cardiomyopathy. We describe the first case of a Korean child with MA who presented with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCMP) at the age of 3 months. METHODS AND RESULTS A 3-month-old Korean boy visited our hospital for diagnosis and management of cardiomegaly. Newborn screening for inherited metabolic diseases showed a normal result; therefore, DCMP management was initiated. Biochemical and the MLYCD gene analyses subsequently confirmed diagnosis of MA. Elevated plasma C3DC level and excessive excretion of urinary malonate were observed, and two pathogenic variants, including a novel start codon mutation (c.1A>G), were identified in MLYCD. A low long-chain fat diet with middle-chain triglyceride formula and L-carnitine supplementation was initiated. The patient is now 5 years old and exhibits considerably improved cardiac function. CONCLUSIONS MA can be diagnosed using newborn screening; however, negative results do not exclude the possibility of disease. Metabolic screening for differential diagnosis of infantile DCMP is recommended to rule out rare, but manageable, metabolic cardiomyopathies.

Abstract
Background: As a typical chronic metabolic disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus causes a heavy health-care burden to society. In this study, we applied the metabolomics strategy to explore the potential molecular mechanism of the Huangqiliuyi decoction (HQLYD) for type-2 diabetes (T2D). Ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS) combined with pattern recognition methods was utilized to select specific metabolites closely associated with HQLYD. Biomarker pathway analysis and biological network were utilized to uncover the therapeutic effect and action mechanism related to HQLYD. A total of twenty-five biomarkers were identified in the animal model, in which sixteen biomarkers are associated with HQLYD treatment for T2D. They attenuated the abnormalities of metabolic pathways such as phenylalanine, tyrosine and tryptophan biosynthesis, phenylalanine metabolism, and the citrate cycle. HQLYD also significantly elevated the serum FINS and SOD, GSP-x level in the liver and kidney, and reduced the serum TC, TG, HDL, LDL, urea, Scr, AST, ALT, FBG, IRS, MDA, and CAT level. We found that the therapeutic mechanism of HQLYD against T2D affected amino acid metabolism, glucose metabolism and lipid metabolism. Metabolomics revealed that the Huangqiliuyi decoction attenuates abnormal metabolism as a novel therapeutic opportunity for type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
Background/aim: To determine insulin sensitivity before chemotherapy and during febrile neutropenia in patients with acute leukemia and to assess its effect on the number of documented infections, the severity of infection and the outcome of the first hospitalization. To compare insulin sensitivity in the study group to a group of patient with obesity. Materials and methods: The study group consisted of 30 (37% of the total number) patients with newly diagnosed acute leukemia. Testing of insulin sensitivity was done before chemotherapy and during febrile neutropenia. Parameters were compared to a group of 30 age, and sex matched patients with obesity. Results: Insulin sensitivity was normal before chemotherapy. Obese patients were characterized by insulin resistance. Febrile neutropenia led to the development of insulin resistance (t = -2.43, p = 0.021). The level of insulin resistance was in positive correlation with fibrinogen (r = 0.59, p < 0.05). Patients with a documented site of infection had higher fasting insulin and an insulin resistance before chemotherapy (t = -2.38, p = 0.024). Insulin sensitivity did not influence outcome of the first hospitalization. Conclusion: Patients with acute leukemia in febrile neutropenia developed changes in insulin sensitivity similar to those seen in obesity. Insulin resistance was present in patients with a documented site of infection, and it worsened with the extent of inflammation. The outcome of the first hospitalization was not affected.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS The metabolic syndrome(Mets) is a multiplex risk factor for atheroselerotie cardiovascular disease. The aims of the study were to assess the association of the Mets with atherogenic index of plasma(AIP) and other atherogenic parameters in an urban Chinese population. METHODS AND RESULTS The data were collected in 1992 and then again in 2007 from the same group of 582 individuals(359 men and 223 women) without Mets in 1992. During 15 years' follow-up, AIP was the lipid parameter that was most strongly associated with Mets, with an unadjusted odds ratio of 5.66 (95% CI:1.76-18.23, P = 0.004) in the univariate logistic regression analysis. Multivariate logistic regression analyses also revealed that AIP was an independent risk factor for Mets. AIP significantly predicted Mets in men, with an unadjusted odds ratio of 30.73 (95% CI: 5.62, 168.12 P = 0.012) in a univariate model. Associations remained significant after adjustment for smoking, drinking, physical exercise and components of Mets. The incidences of Mets adjusted for age according to the quartiles of AIP showed a statistical linear trend in men(P for trend = 0.007) rather than in women(P for trend = 0.529). CONCLUSIONS AIP might be a strong and independent predictor for Mets in an urban Chinese population. The incidence of Mets increased with AIP elevated in men while not in women.

Abstract
Background There is an increased incidence of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) in patients with metabolic syndrome who usually have high levels of serum triglyceride (TG) and low high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C). Plasma atherogenic index (PAI) is the logarithmic ratio of serum TG level to HDL-C and related to cardiovascular diseases. In this study, we aimed to determine the accuracy of PAI in determining renal malignancy in localized renal masses preoperatively. Methods Totally 169 patients who were diagnosed with Bosniak III-IV lesions by imaging modalities and treated in our hospital with partial or radical nephrectomy were retrospectively analyzed using institutional renal cancer database between 2013 and 2018. Preoperative images were evaluated by two experienced radiologists. The patients were divided into two groups according to their postoperative pathological diagnosis as malignant or benign tumors. The PAI of each patient was calculated and the statistical significance of PAI in predicting malignancy for renal masses was analyzed using uni- and multivariable analyses. Results Of patients, 109 (64.5%) were males and 60 (35.5%) were females with a median age of 61 (33–84) years. Median tumor size was 6.5 (2–18) cm. Pathological diagnosis was malignant in 145 (85.8%) and benign in 24 (14.2%) patients. There was no statistically significant difference in serum TG levels between malignant and benign cases (p > 0.05). The HDL-C levels were significantly lower in malignant cases (p = 0.001). Median PAI value was 0.63 (0.34–1.58) and significantly higher in malignant cases (p = 0.003). The PAI cut-off value for malignancy was ≥0.34. The sensitivity was calculated as 88.2% and specificity as 45.8%, the positive predictive value as 90.8, negative predictive value as 39.3, and odds ratio as 6.37 (95% CI: 2.466–16.458). In multivariable analysis, gender, smoking status, and hypertension had no effect on malignancy, whereas PAI and HDL-C were independent risk factors (p = 0.003 and p = 0.003, respectively). The risk of malignancy was 5.019 times higher, when PAI was > 0.34 (95% CI: 1.744–14.445) in multivariable logistic regression analysis. Conclusions The PAI can be used as a predictive tool in suspicion of malignant renal masses. In case of a benign pathology, PAI levels may be encouraging for surgeons for nephron-sparing surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Insulin resistance (IR) is frequently observed in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). In clinical practice, IR assessment is limited to a low proportion of patients due to cost and equipment and technical expertise requirements. The surrogate index of triglycerides and glucose (TyG index) has been validated in non-rheumatic populations, showing adequate sensitivity and specificity for IR, although this index has not yet been used in connective tissue disorders. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency of insulin resistance (IR) using the validated surrogate index of triglycerides and glucose (TyG index) and to explore factors associated with IR in Mexican women with RA or SLE. METHODS Ninety-five female RA and 57 SLE patients were included in a cross-sectional study. Clinical and epidemiological variables were evaluated. IR was assessed using the TyG index with a cutoff value of > 4.68. Logistic regression analysis was performed to identify factors associated with IR excluding confounders. RESULTS IR frequency in the entire sample was 50%, higher than the 10% observed in non-rheumatic controls (p < 0.001). The frequency of IR was similar in SLE (49.1%) and RA (50.5%, p = 0.8) patients. IR was associated with a longer duration of hypertension and higher total cholesterol and low density lipoprotein cholesterol levels. Based on multivariate analysis, the duration of hypertension (OR: 1.06; 95% CI 1.002-1.12, p = 0.04), waist circumference (OR: 1.04; 95% CI 1.01-1.08, p = 0.007), uric acid levels (OR: 1.46; 95% CI 1.08-1.97, p = 0.01), RA (OR: 4.87; 95% CI 1.31-18.78, p = 0.01) and SLE (OR: 4.22; 95% CI 1.06-16.74, p = 0.04) were the main risk factors for IR. CONCLUSIONS This study shows that the TyG index is a useful screening test for IR in RA and SLE patients. Future longitudinal studies should be performed with the aim of identifying the predictive value of TyG index results for identifying complications linked to IR.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) are associated with obesity, which triggers the release of inflammatory substances. Myeloperoxidase (MPO), a peroxidase enzyme, and alpha-1-acid glycoprotein (AGP), an acute-phase protein, are known to be released in patients with inflammatory conditions and cardiovascular disease (CVD). METHODS In this study, we investigated the correlation between MPO and AGP levels in pre/diabetic and MetS patients by conducting a cross-sectional study at The University of Jordan Hospital (UoJH) at the diabetes and endocrinology outpatient clinics. A total of 237 patients were recruited and assessed for eligibility. Of these, 149 patients were excluded, and 88 patients were assigned as: 29 patients in a healthy lean normoglycemic control group; 29 patients in a nondiabetic MetS group; and 30 patients in a prediabetic/newly diagnosed T2DM MetS group. RESULTS MPO levels were only significantly higher in the nondiabetic MetS group compared with the control group (p = 0.026). AGP levels were significantly higher in both nondiabetic MetS and MetS-prediabetic/T2DM groups versus control (p = 0.007 and p = 0.015, respectively). Both biomarkers lacked inter-MetS-group discrepancy. CONCLUSIONS Our results demonstrate an association between MPO and AGP with obesity and hyperglycemia, alongside their correlation with several adiposity, hematology and atherogenicity indices. Our findings reinforce the use of MPO and AGP as potentially putative and surrogate predictive/prognostic tools for MetS and its related disorders.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study was designed to investigate risk factors related to atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), as well as the relationship between AIP and chronic microvascular complications in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). METHODS This study included 2523 patients with T2DM who had not been treated with lipid-lowering drugs and were admitted to the Department of Endocrinology at Zhongnan Hospital, Wuhan University, during the period from January 2015 to February 2018. Anthropometric indicators were measured after overnight fasting. Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), total cholesterol (TC), and triglyceride (TG) were detected by enzymatic analysis. Standard 75 g oral glucose tolerance testing was performed to measure 0 and 2 hr plasma levels of glucose and insulin. Insulin sensitivity was assessed with HOMA-IR. RESULTS Increase in AIP was associated with an increased risk for hypertension (P < 0.05), HbA1c (P < 0.05), HOMA-IR (P < 0.05), UA (P < 0.05), and decreased eGFR levels (P < 0.05). Furthermore, AIP values directly correlated with BMI (r = 0.182, P < 0.001), waist circumference (r = 0.129, P < 0.001), blood glucose index (FBG (r = 0.153, P < 0.001), PPBG (r = 0.117, P < 0.001), and HbA1c (r = 0.074, P < 0.001)), insulin resistance (HOMA-IR; r = 0.112, P < 0.001), and uric acid (UA, r = 0.177, P < 0.001). Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that waist circumference, HOMA-IR, FBG, systolic blood pressure, and UA were independent risk factors for AIP (all P < 0.05). The prevalence of diabetic neuropathy and metabolic syndrome was significantly higher among patients with higher AIP. CONCLUSION AIP represents a clinically convenient indicator for the detection of T2DM with high risk of complications and associated diseases and thus is a good predictor and indicator for follow-up monitoring in the treatment of patients with high-risk type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
Dyslipidemia is one of the most important factors for coronary artery disease (CAD). The atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), a new comprehensive lipid index, might be a strong marker for predicting the risk of CAD.A hospital-based case-control study including 2936 CAD patients and 2451 controls was conducted in a Chinese population. Traditional lipid parameters were detected, and nontraditional lipid comprehensive indexes were calculated.Compared with controls, CAD patients had higher levels of total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). By contrast, the level of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) was lower in CAD patients. The values of nontraditional lipid profiles, including non-HDL-C, TC/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C, non-HDL-C/HDL-C (atherogenic index, AI), TC*TG*LDL/HDL-C (lipoprotein combine index, LCI), and lg (TG/HDL-C) (AIP), were all significantly higher in the cases than in the controls. The results of Pearson correlation analyses indicated that AIP was positively and significantly correlated with TC (r = 0.125, P < .001), TG (r = 0.810, P < .001), LDL-C (r = 0.035, P < .001), non-HDL-C (r = 0.322, P < .001), TC/HDL-C (r = 0.669, P < .001), LDL-C/HDL-C (r = 0.447, P < .001), AI (r = 0.669, P < .001), and LCI (r = 0.688, P < .001) and was negatively correlated with age (r = -0.122, P < .001) and HDL-C (r = -0.632, P < .001). In the univariate logistic regression analysis, AIP was the lipid parameter that was most strongly associated with CAD, with an unadjusted odds ratio of 1.782 (95% confidence interval: 1.490-2.131, P < .001), for an increase of 1-SD. Multivariate logistic regression analyses revealed that AIP was an independent risk factor for CAD.AIP might be a strong and independent predictor for CAD in the Chinese Han population.
