Signalling pathways in vascular endothelium activated by shear stress: relevance to atherosclerosis

Major advances in our understanding of how endothelial cells sense and respond to haemodynamic forces and, more specifically, to fluid shear stress have been achieved during the past 3 years. These include definition of potential shear stress receptors and multiple signalling pathways that mediate shear stress regulation of gene expression. A few studies have also pointed to the unique effects of complex shear stress on endothelial activation, thus leading to better understanding of the mechanisms that lead to the development of atherosclerosis.

Acute cardiac effects of 'SCUD' missile attacks on a civilian population

The 'SCUD' raids on Israel during the Gulf War afforded a rare opportunity to examine the effect of mass acute fear on the cardiac health of the general population. Press reports suggested an alarming rise in cardiac deaths during the first missile raids. In order to ascertain this statement, we examined the Emergency Room records of a community hospital in the affected area and all the death certificates in the local region. The periods studied were from 1 January to 28 February 1991, and the equivalent weeks in 1990. The Emergency Room records showed that there was an increased rate of cardiac complaints throughout the war, most marked during the first week. However, this was not accompanied by an increased cardiac mortality, either in the hospital or in the region as a whole, except during the first week. A similar increase in cardiac mortality occurred during the same week the previous year. The increased incidence of acute cardiac events during the first week of the war was probably a coincidence, and not a direct consequence of mass fear. Panic, occasioned by press reports, may have led to a lower threshold of referral which persisted throughout the war.

Ultrastructural analysis of leukocytes recruited into the guinea pig lung by LTB4 aerosol

Two groups of naive guinea pigs were exposed to different LTB4 aerosol solutions: LTB4/saline and LTB4/BSA. Control animals were exposed to saline alone and saline/BSA. The LTB4/BSA aerosol was the most effective in recruiting leukocytes, with the maximal numbers of cells in the lung tissue at 6 hrs. Light microscopy/TEM revealed marked differences in eosinophil morphology in saline/BSA and LTB4/BSA aerosol treated animals. Occasional eosinophils in the submucosa of controls, had few pseudopodia, few cytoplasmic vesicles, and intact granules. In LTB4 treated animals, there were numerous eosinophils in the bronchial mucosa and submucosa with numerous pseudopodia, numerous cytoplasmic vesicles, and light crystalline cores.
