Abstract
MiR-21 and miR-375 have been reported as dysregulated in prostate cancer (PCa) in multiple previous studies. Still, variable or even opposing data for the expression of these microRNAs in PCa were found, and their potential biomarker properties remain elusive. In an attempt to clarify their significance as PCa biomarkers, as well as to compare different types of specimens as a source of relevant microRNAs, we used plasma and matching plasma-derived exosomes from patients with PCa and patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Plasma and exosomes were obtained from 34 patients with PCa and 34 patients with BPH, and their levels of expression of miR-21 and miR-375 were determined by RT-qPCR. We found no significant difference in the level of expression of these microRNAs in plasma and exosomes between patients with PCa and BPH. The level of exosomal miR-21 was elevated in PCa patients with high serum PSA values, as well as in patients with aggressive PCa, while for plasma samples, the results remained insignificant. For miR-375, we did not find an association with the values of standard prognostic parameters of PCa, nor with cancer aggressiveness. Therefore, our results support the potential prognostic role of exosomal miR-21 expression levels in PCa.

Abstract
The growing zone (GZ) of the unicellular coenocytic sporangiophore of Phycomyces blakesleeanus represents the site of stimulus reception (light, gravity, gas) and stimulus response, i.e., local modulations of the elongation growth, which may result, in dependence of the stimulus direction, in tropic bending. Until now, evidence for a possible participation of the columella in sensory reception is absent. We confirm with light microscopy earlier studies that show that the GZ and the columella are not separated by a membrane or cell wall, but rather form a spatial continuum that allows free exchange of cytoplasm and organelle transport. Evidence is presented that the columella is responsive to external stimuli. Columellae, from which spores and sporangial cell wall had been removed, respond to exogenous auxin with a local depolarization of the membrane potential and an increased growth rate of the GZ. In contrast, auxin applied to the GZ causes a decrease of the growth rate irrespective of the presence or absence of sporangia. The response pattern is specific and relevant for the sensory reception of Phycomyces, because the light-insensitive mutant C148carAmadC, which lacks the RAS-GAP protein MADC, displays abnormal IAA sensitivity and membrane depolarization. We argue that the traditional concept of the GZ as the only stimulus-sensitive zone should be abandoned in favor of a model in which GZ and columella operate as a single entity capable to orchestrate a multitude of stimulus inputs, including auxin, to modulate the membrane potential and elongation growth of the GZ.

Abstract
Correct elucidation of physiological and pathological processes mediated by extracellular vesicles (EV) is highly dependent on the reliability of the method used for their purification. Currently available chemical/physical protocols for sample fractionation are time-consuming, often scarcely reproducible and their yields are low. Immuno-capture based approaches could represent an effective purification alternative to obtain homogeneous EV samples. An easy-to-operate chromatography system was set-up for the purification of intact EVs based on a single domain (VHH) antibodies-copolymer matrix suitable for biological samples as different as conditioned cell culture medium and human plasma. Methacrylate-based copolymer is a porous solid support, the chemical versatility of which enables its efficient functionalization with VHHs. The combined analyses of morphological features and biomarker (CD9, CD63 and CD81) presence indicated that the recovered EVs were exosomes. The lipoprotein markers APO-A1 and APO-B were both negative in tested samples. This is the first report demonstrating the successful application of spherical porous methacrylate-based copolymer coupled with VHHs for the exosome isolation from biological fluids. This inexpensive immunoaffinity method has the potential to be applied for the isolation of EVs belonging to different morphological and physiological classes.

Abstract
Lipomas are benign adipose tissue tumors of unknown etiology, which can vary in size, number, body localization and cell populations within the tissue. Lipoma-derived stem cells (LDSCs) are proposed as a potential tool in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering due to their similar characteristics with adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) reported so far. Our study is among the first giving detailed insights into the molecular signature and differences in the differentiation capacity of LDSCs in vitro compared to ADSCs. Mesenchymal stem cell phenotype was analyzed by gene expression and flow cytometric analysis of stem cell markers. Adipogenesis and osteogenesis were analyzed by microscopic analysis, cytochemical and immunocytochemical staining, gene and protein expression analyses. We showed that both LDSCs and ADSCs were mesenchymal stem cells with similar phenotype and stemness state but different molecular basis for potential differentiation. Adipogenesis-related genes expression pattern and presence of more mature adipocytes in ADSCs than in LDSCs after 21 days of adipogenic differentiation, indicated that differentiation capacity of LDSCs was significantly lower compared to ADSCs. Analysis of osteogenesis-related markers after 16 days of osteogenic differentiation revealed that both types of cells had characteristic osteoblast-like phenotype, but were at different stages of osteogenesis. Differences observed between LDSCs and ADSCs are probably due to the distinct molecular signature and their commitment in the tissue that governs their different capacity and fate during adipogenic and osteogenic induction in vitro despite their similar mesenchymal phenotype.

Abstract
Abstract
Induced prenatal hypothyroidism in rat pups leads to accelerated primordial follicle assembly and premature follicular atresia with ovary failure. This work investigates the influence of maternal hypothyroidism induced with 6-n-propyl-2-thyouracil (PTU) on the number and morphology of oogonia/oocytes in newborn rat pups with light and transmission electron microscopy. Expression of apoptosis and autophagy markers in oogonia/oocytes were examined using immunohistochemistry. Hypothyroid newborn pups had a decreased number of mitotic and resting oogonia, while the number of altered oogonia/oocytes was increased. Ultrastructural observations revealed the increased presence of degenerated pachytene oocytes (Z-cells) and oogonia/oocytes undergoing autophagy, apoptosis and combined apoptosis and autophagy, in this group. The most abundant altered oogonia/oocytes in the hypothyroid group were those with morphological features of advanced autophagy and Z-cells. The percentage of TUNEL (terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling) positive oogonia/oocytes was significantly lower in the hypothyroid group. No significant difference was recorded in the expression of caspase-3, ATG7 and LC3 possibly reflecting that these proteins were not involved in the oogonia/oocyte alteration process during prenatal rat hypothyroidism. The obtained results indicate that developmental hypothyroidism in the offspring enhances the number of Z-cells and oogonia/oocytes altered with the advanced process of autophagy.

Abstract
In most patients with lung cancer radiation treatment is used either as single agent or in combination with radiosensitizing drugs. However, the mechanisms underlying combined therapy and its impact on different modes of cell death have not yet been fully elucidated. We aimed to examine effects of single and combined treatments with γ-rays and erlotinib on radioresistant CRL-5876 human lung adenocarcinoma cells with particular emphasis on cell death. CRL-5876 cells were treated with γ-rays and/or erlotinib and changes in cell cycle, DNA repair dynamics, ultrastructure, nuclear morphology and protein expression were monitored at different time points. To reveal the relationship between types of cell death that arise after these treatments, autophagy was blocked with chloroquine. We found that higher dose of γ-rays causes G2/M arrest while adding of erlotinib to this treatment decreases the number of cells in S phase. Impact of erlotinib on kinetics of disappearance of irradiation-induced DNA double strand breaks is reflected in the increase of residual γ-H2AX foci after 24 h. γ-rays provoke cytoprotective autophagy which precedes development of senescence. Erlotinib predominantly induces apoptosis and enlarges the number of apoptotic cells in the irradiated CRL-5876 cells. Chloroquine improved cytotoxicity induced by radiation and erlotinib, increased apoptosis and decreased senescence in the CRL-5876 cells. The results obtained on CRL-5876 cells indicate significant radiosensitizing effect of erlotinib and suggest that chloroquine in the combination with the above treatments may have an additional antitumor effect in lung adenocarcinoma.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the role of an exopolysaccharide produced by natural dairy isolate Lactobacillus paracasei subsp. paracasei BGSJ2-8, in the adhesion to intestinal epithelial cells and a decrease in Escherichia coli's association with Caco-2 cells. Annotation of the BGSJ2-8 genome showed the presence of a gene cluster, epsSJ, which encodes the biosynthesis of the strain-specific exopolysaccharide EPS-SJ, detected as two fractions (P1 and P2) by size exclusion chromatography (SEC) coupled with multi-angle laser light scattering (MALLS) detection. SEC-MALLS analysis revealed that an EPS-SJ(-) mutant (EPS7, obtained by insertion mutagenesis of the glps_2198 gene encoding primary glycosyltransferase) does not produce the P2 fraction of EPS-SJ. Transmission electron microscopy showed that EPS7 mutant has a thinner cell wall compared to the EPS-SJ(+) strain BGSJ2-83 (a plasmid free-derivative of BGSJ2-8). Interestingly, strain BGSJ2-83 showed higher adhesion to Caco-2 epithelial intestinal cell line than the EPS7 mutant. Accordingly, BGSJ2-83 effectively reduced E. coli ATCC25922's association with Caco-2 cells, while EPS7 did not show statistically significant differences. In addition, the effect of EPS-SJ on the proliferation of lymphocytes in gastrointestinal associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) was tested and the results showed that the reduction of GALT lymphocyte proliferation was higher by BGSJ2-83 than by the mutant. To the best of our knowledge this is the first report indicating that the presence of EPS (EPS-SJ) on the surface of lactobacilli can improve communication between bacteria and intestinal epithelium, implying its possible role in gut colonization.

Abstract
The strong therapeutic potential of an organotin(IV) compound loaded in nanostructured silica (SBA-15pSn) is demonstrated: B16 melanoma tumor growth in syngeneic C57BL/6 mice is almost completely abolished. In contrast to apoptosis as the basic mechanism of the anticancer action of numerous chemotherapeutics, the important advantage of this SBA-15pSn mesoporous material is the induction of cell differentiation, an effect unknown for metal-based drugs and nanomaterials alone. This non-aggressive mode of drug action is highly efficient against cancer cells but is in the concentration range used nontoxic for normal tissue. JNK (Jun-amino-terminal kinase)-independent apoptosis accompanied by the development of the melanocyte-like nonproliferative phenotype of survived cells indicates the extraordinary potential of SBA-15pSn to suppress tumor growth without undesirable compensatory proliferation of malignant cells in response to neighboring cell death.

Hippocampal structural changes associated with diabetes-related cognitive impairments are well described, but their molecular background remained vague. We examined whether/how diabetes alters molecular basis of energy metabolism in hippocampus readily after diabetes onset, with special emphasis on its redox-sensitivity. To induce diabetes, adult Mill Hill hybrid hooded rats received a single alloxan dose (120 mg/kg). Both non-diabetic and diabetic groups were further divided in two subgroups receiving (i) or not (ii) superoxide dismutase (SOD) mimic, [Mn(II)(pyane)Cl2] for 7 days, i.p. Treatment of the diabetic animals started after blood glucose level ≥12 mM. Diabetes decreased protein levels of oxidative phosphorylation components: complex III and ATP synthase. In contrast, protein amounts of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, pyruvate dehydrogenase, and hypoxia-inducible factor-1α - the key regulator of energy metabolism in stress conditions, were higher in diabetic animals. Treatment with SOD mimic restored/increased the levels of oxidative phosphorylation components and returned hypoxia-inducible factor-1α to control level, while diabetes-induced up-regulation of glycolytic enzyme, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, was additionally stimulated. To conclude, our results provide insight into the earliest molecular changes of energy-producing pathways in diabetes that may account for structural/functional disturbance of hippocampus, seen during disease progression. Also, data suggest [Mn(II)(pyane)Cl2] as potential therapeutic agent in cutting-edge approaches to threat this widespread metabolic disorder.

Abstract
The iridescent features of the butterfly species Apatura iris (Linnaeus, 1758) and A. ilia (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775) were studied. We recognized the structural color of scales only on the dorsal side of both the fore and hind wings of males of both of the aforementioned butterfly species. The scale dimensions and microstructure were analyzed by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The optical properties were measured and it was found that the peak reflectivity is around 380 nm, with a spectral width (full width at half maximum) of approximately 50 nm in both species. The angular selectivity is high and a purple iridescent color is observed within the angular range of only 18 degrees in both species.

Abstract
Molecular mechanisms underlying interscapular brown adipose tissue (IBAT) thermogenesis were elucidated. Namely, gene and/or protein expression of uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARgamma), PPARgamma-coactivator-1alpha (PGC-1alpha), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) - key molecules that regulate thermogenesis-related processes - mitochondriogenesis, angiogenesis and IBAT hyperplasia, in rats subjected to cold (4+/-1 degrees C) for 1, 3, 7, 12, 21 and 45days were investigated. Particularly, to examine influence of nitric oxide (NO) on IBAT thermogenic-program, cold-exposed animals were treated by l-arginine or N(omega)-nitro-l-arginine-methyl ester (L-NAME). Related to control (22+/-1 degrees C), cold induced time-coordinated UCP1, PPARgamma and PGC-1alpha transcriptional activation accompanied by PCNA activation and increased VEGF immunolabeling that correlate with endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) transcriptional activation suggesting NO involvement in these thermogenic-factors activation. Observed molecular changes were translated into increased mitochondrial-remodeling, angiogenesis, and IBAT hyperplasia. l-Arginine augmented and prolonged cold-induced increase of eNOS, inducible NOS and thermogenic-molecules expression, IBAT nerve supply, vascularity, hyperplasia and mitochondrial-remodeling, while L-NAME had an opposite effects. Results show that NO improves thermogenesis-related mitochondriogenesis, angiogenesis and tissue hyperplasia, positively affecting molecular basis of these processes, suggesting that NO is an essential regulator of IBAT thermogenic-program operating, at genes, proteins and tissue structure levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Morphological changes in adipose tissue reflect functional disorders that correlate with cardiometabolic complications of obesity. The metabolic risks vary among the obese individuals. Furthermore, normal-weight individuals are not necessarily metabolically healthy. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze morphological characteristics of the abdominal adipose tissue in normal-weight and obese individuals in regards to metabolic risks. METHODS AND RESULTS The study group consisted of 30 overweight or obese and 20 normal-weight women undergoing elective surgery. Women of each group were divided into metabolically healthy and metabolically obese, based on the homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), triglyceride, total-, LDL- and HDL-cholesterol levels. The size and numerical density of adipocytes, as well as volume density of blood vessels in subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissue were compared among subgroups. The results showed hypertrophy of adipocytes of visceral adipose tissue in metabolically obese normal-weight women. At the same time, metabolically healthy obese women had smaller adipocytes in both depots in comparison with "at risk" obese women. The lowest volume density of blood vessels correlated with the largest diameter of adipocytes in "at risk" obese women indicating hypoxic changes in visceral adipose tissue. The observed differences of the adipose tissue morphology did not correlate with considerable phenotypic differences within either the normal-weight or obese women group. CONCLUSION Changes in adipocyte size, cellular and vascular density of adipose tissue in relation with metabolic disorders, regardless of nutritional level, suggest limited capacity of fat deposition and adipose tissue response to hypoxia.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the interrelationship of plasma lipid profile, lipid peroxidation, and erythrocyte antioxidative defense in patients with insulin-dependent (IDDM) and non-insulin-dependent (NIDDM) diabetes mellitus. Plasma levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and lipid peroxides and the activities of copper, zinc superoxide dismutase (CuZnSOD), catalase, glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), as well as the amount of glutathione in erythrocytes, were determined in IDDM, NIDDM, and nondiabetic control subjects. Additionally, morphology of erythrocytes in all subjects was examined. Plasma levels of total cholesterol and triglycerides were significantly increased in NIDDM compared with controls. Also, the lipid peroxide level was higher in NIDDM than in either control or IDDM subjects. CuZnSOD activity in erythrocytes was elevated in NIDDM patients compared with the control. In NIDDM patients, more extensive erythrocyte spherocytosis and echinocytosis compared with both control and IDDM subjects were observed. In contrast with the IDDM group, the observed abnormality in lipid metabolism in NIDDM patients is closely associated with increased lipid peroxidation, changes in antioxidative defense, and erythrocyte morphology.

Abstract
Alterations of pancreatic antioxidative defense (AD) and possible nitric oxide (NO) role in AD organization of adult rats receiving l-arginine.HCl (2.25%) or N(omega)-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME.HCl, 0.01%) as drinking liquids and maintained at room (22+/-1 degrees C) or low (4+/-1 degrees C) temperature for 45 days were studied. For that purpose, copper, zinc- and manganese superoxide dismutase (CuZnSOD, MnSOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), glutathione S-transferase (GST) and glutathione reductase (GR) activities were determined. Cold-induced decrease of CuZnSOD was inhibited with L-NAME, while l-arginine produced the same effect as cold in both supplemented groups. Cold acclimation elevated GSH-Px activity. l-Arginine and L-NAME expressed no effect on GSH-Px in rats kept at room temperature. L-NAME additionally elevated cold-induced GSH-Px activity, l-arginine expressing a similar trend. Cold-induced increase in GST activity was inhibited by L-NAME, while l-arginine inhibited this enzyme in both supplemented groups. Cold acclimation increased GR activity in control and L-NAME-treated group and l-arginine expressed a similar trend. Neither of the treatments affected MnSOD and CAT activities. Cold-induced changes of pancreatic AD were additionally affected by the alterations in l-arginine-NO-producing pathway. Some AD changes in the same direction with l-arginine or L-NAME point to the complexity of nitrogen compounds metabolism and function, accompanied by tissue-specific response.

Abstract
Interscapular brown adipose tissue (IBAT) hyperplasia involves a new metabolic and structural profile, resulting from acclimation of animals to a cold environment. Cold-induced changes of several antioxidative defense (AD) components in IBAT and their interrelationship with uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1), sympathetic innervation and apoptosis were studied using cold-acclimated adult rat males (4 +/- 1 degrees C, 45 days). Their age-matches were maintained at 22 +/- 1 degrees C serving as the controls. In cold-adapted rats, activities of CuZn- and Mn-superoxide dismutase (SOD) and apoptosis were reduced, while catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), glutathione S-transferase (GST) activities and glutathione (GSH) content were increased compared to the control. IBAT mass, protein content, plasma free fatty acid (FFA) concentration, sympathetic innervation and UCP1 level were significantly increased in cold-acclimated group compared to the corresponding control. These results suggest that decreased CuZn and MnSOD activities in IBAT represent an adaptive response due to UCP1-induced mitochondrial uncoupling. Additionally, intensive fatty acid oxidation led to an increased H(2)O(2) production which resulted in increased CAT, GSH-Px and GST activities and GSH level. Generally speaking, cold-induced changes of AD in the IBAT are closely connected with newly established metabolic profile in this tissue, thus making an important part of the entire tissue homeostasis including cell survival.

Abstract
SUMMARY
Changes in inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) protein levels and its relationship with the hyperplasia and uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) levels were examined in interscapular brown adipose tissue (IBAT) of adult rat males receiving l-arginine (l-Arg; 2.25%) or N-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester (l-NAME; 0.01%)as a drinking liquid and maintained at low (4±1°C) or room(22±1°C) temperature for 45 days.
Cold generally diminished both iNOS immunopositivity and protein level in IBAT, as well as the rate of apoptosis. Among groups acclimated to cold,higher iNOS immunopositivity and protein levels were detected only in the l-Arg-treated group. Furthermore, chronic l-Arg treatment increased IBAT mass and UCP1 protein content, while l-NAME had an opposite effect, decreasing both IBAT mass and UCP1 protein level, as compared to the control maintained at 4±1°C.
These data suggest that nitric oxide (NO) produced by iNOS could also contribute to overall NO-associated regulation of thermogenesis in IBAT. Namely, that iNOS, i.e. NO, in correlation with enhanced thermogenesis,additionally induced IBAT hyperplasia and UCP1 level compared to that induced by low temperature. Cooperative action of decreased apoptosis accompanied by increased tissue hyperplasia and UCP1 level, observed in IBAT of cold-acclimated rats, would be a way of meeting the metabolic requirements for increased thermogenesis.

Abstract
The level and intracellular redistribution of the two nucleo-cytoplasmic members of 70 kDa heat shock protein family (constitutive, Hsc70 or Hsp73, and inducible, Hsp72) were studied in rat liver during a 24-h period after exposure of the animals to 41 degrees C whole body hyperthermic stress. The examined proteins were detected in the liver cytosol and nuclei by Western blotting and immunohistochemical staining of paraffin sections, as well as by immnocytochemical staining of isolated nuclear smears. All three techniques applied were based on the use of monoclonal antibodies recognizing both constitutive and inducible Hsp70 isoforms or only the inducible isoform, and gave consistent results. The exposure of the animals to in vivo heat stress was shown to induce the synthesis of otherwise non-existing Hsp72, rendering Hsc70 level unchanged in comparison to unstressed controls. However, immediately after the stress the intracellular redistribution of Hsc70, i.e. its nuclear accumulation, was observed. The maximal level of Hsp70 both in the cytoplasm and in the nuclei was registered 5 h after the stress, which coincided with the maximal level of Hsp72 induction. The alterations in the level and intracellular distribution of examined proteins were still noticeable 24 h after the stress. The results of this study could shed some more light on, as yet uncertain, differences between cellular functions of these two proteins, as well as on the role of the constitutive form under normal and stress conditions.

Abstract
The presence of glucocorticoid receptors (GR) in rat liver nuclei over a 24 h time period following hyperthermic stress at 41 degrees C was immunocytologically studied using unfixed nuclear smears. Liver nuclei in unstressed animals were found to be immunonegative for GR. However, intense GR immunopositivity followed by a subsequent gradual decrease in receptor levels was observed in the nuclei of test animals during the first 2 h after stress. This stress-related increase in the receptor nuclear level was greater than the increase seen after dexamethasone administration. These results suggest that hyperthermic stress could potentiate the hormonal stimulation of receptor nuclear translocation.

Abstract
In the present study we have reported an iron-loading in the rat brown adipose tissue (BAT) after 3-day treatment with insulin (4 IU/kg). Light microscopy showed numerous iron-positive cells (Perls' stain) mainly macrophages and brown adipocytes, while electron-microscopic examination revealed lipofuscin granules and phagosomes as iron-containing components. These results clearly indicate that iron participates in damaging of brown adipocytes.

Abstract
The present comparative conventional electron microscopic studies of the liver biopsy in 20 AIDS patients revealed numerous disintegrated mitochondria in hepatocytes, Kupffer cells lymphocytes, and eosinophile leukocytes. It was observed that (1) AIDS mitochondria are clustered, disorganized, and with protuberances; (2) the number of cristae is reduced and they are branched dichotomously; (3) vacuoles are located both within the mitochondria and, in their vicinity, (4) " minimitochondria" are within the ordinary mitochondria; (5) virus-like particles are at the periphery of electron-dense mitochondrial remains.

Abstract
Male Wistar rats, (2 months old), randomly divided according to the diet offered to four groups (C-control; A- alcoholized, PD-protein-deprived, A-PD- alcoholized protein-deprived). In group A and A-PD rats, the number of gastrin producing G-cells was significantly lower. The volume density of G-cells was significantly decreased in alcoholic rats. Fasting serum gastrin level (FSGL) significantly raised due to combined effect of alcohol consumption and protein malnutrition. In group A rats, the profile area of G-cells and their nuclei increased. In PD rats, the profile area of G cells also increased. There were no differences in nucleus/cell ratio due to alcohol ingestion alone, but it decreased significantly in PD and A-PD rats. Pale and lucent types of granules were predominantly seen in G-cells of animals of group A and A-PD. Mean diameter of granules increased in A, PD and A-PD rats. Other endocrine cells (ECL, D, EC) also decreased in number in A rats. Somatostatin producing D-cells decreased significantly in A-PD rats, both in fundic and pyloric mucosa.

Abstract
Diapedetic capacity of the rat thrombocytes to leave capillaries of the interscapular brown adipose tissue (IBAT) and infiltrate the interstitium has been observed by conventional electron-microscopy. Thrombocytes that reach IBAT interstitium are morphologically completely different from lumenary ones. The interstitial thrombocyte has a prominet head region (1.51 x 2.12 microns) and very long phylopodium (3.43 microns). Experimental conditions which induced drastic changes in morphology of interstitial thrombocytes were: sucrose overfeeding (10% over 2 days); a 24 hour starving after sucrose overfeeding and Ca-Sandoz drinking (480 mg/L Ca2+ during 2 days). The thrombocytes in the IBAT interstitium can be classified as activated according to: a) pseudopode extension; b) swollen open canalicullar system (OCS); c) endocytosis via coated pits and vesicles; and d) structural changes in alpha granules excreted to the interstitium through OCS. In the IBAT interstitium of 24-hour starved rats after sucrose overfeeding, a thrombocytic layer was observed. It was suggested that thrombocyte adrenalin, stored in dense bodies, was selectively included in the IBAT supply without mediation of the central nervous system.
