Abstract
PURPOSE With the rise of medically assisted reproductive techniques (ART) the number of pregnancies complicated by gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) has increased. The aim of this study was to evaluate retrospectively the outcomes of pregnancies complicated by GDM who conceive trough ART (cases) compared to those who conceived spontaneously (controls). METHODS In 670 women with GDM, 229 cases and 441 controls, followed by the Diabetology of Padua, between 2010-2022, clinical-metabolic maternal characteristics and maternal-foetal outcomes were evaluated. RESULTS As for the maternal clinical-metabolic characteristics, plasma glucose levels at 60' and 120' under oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) at time of diagnosis were significantly higher in cases (177.4 ± 31.1 vs 170.9 ± 34.1 mg/dl, p = 0.016; 151.5 ± 32.2 vs 144.0 ± 33.4 mg/dl, p = 0.005 respectively). Furthermore, at diagnosis, cases show higher levels of total cholesterol (257 ± 53 mg/dl vs 246 ± 52 mg/dl; p = 0.012) and triglycerides (199.8 ± 83.2 mg/dl vs 184.9 ± 71.3 mg/dl; p = 0.02) compared to controls. As for maternal outcomes, thyroid disfunction, was recorded in a higher percentage in case (21.4% vs 14.3%; p = 0.008), as well as, the frequency of cesarean section (50.3% vs 41.2%; p = 0.038) and twin pregnancies (16.2% vs 2.5%; p < 0.001). As for neonatal outcomes, there were no statistically significant differences, except for the birth weight of the second twin, which was significantly lower in cases (2268 ± 536 vs 2822 ± 297 g; p = 0.002). No other significant differences were found. CONCLUSION This study showed no meaningful differences in the outcomes of GDM pregnancies who were conceived with ART compared to that arose spontaneously as the patients were promptly diagnosed and treated.

Abstract
High mountain lakes are considered sensitive indicators of the effects of natural and anthropogenic drivers, including atmospheric deposition and climate change. In this study, we assess long-term trends in the chemistry of a group of high altitude lakes in the Western Alps, Italy, lying in bedrock with a relevant presence of basic, soluble rocks. An in-depth investigation was performed on two key-sites (Lakes Boden Inferiore and Superiore) for which continuous chemical data are available for a period of 30 years. A group of 10 additional lakes in the same area was also considered; these lakes were sampled at the end of the ice-free period during irregular surveys in the period 1980-2017. Water samples were analysed for the main chemical variables, including pH, electrical conductivity, major ions (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, HCO3-, Cl-, SO42-, NO3-) and algal nutrients (phosphorus and nitrogen compounds, reactive silica). A steep increase in conductivity and ion concentrations was detected at the key-sites: conductivity increased from 40-45 to 60-70 µS cm-1 over the period 1984-2017; sulphate concentrations more than doubled over the same period (from 50-60 to 120-180 µeq L-1) and base cations increased from 400-500 to 600-750 µeq L-1. An increase in the solute content was also detected in the survey lakes (average conductivity from 39 ± 20 to 57 ± 23 µS cm-1). The analysis of meteorological data revealed a significant increase of air temperature (0.019 °C y-1 over the period 1950-2017), mainly in spring and summer (0.033 °C y-1), and a decrease of snow cover depth and duration. Meteo-climatic drivers were identified as the responsible for the chemical changes occurred in the lakes. Climate-driven effects on weathering rates were mainly indirect and occurred by affecting the flow paths of water at both surface and subsurface level. Cryosphere modification (reduced snow cover and permafrost thawing) also played a role.

Abstract
It is known that patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD) may show deficits in several areas of cognition, including speech and language abilities. One domain of particular interest is pragmatics, which refers to the capacity of using language in context for a successful communication. Several studies showed that some specific aspects of pragmatics - both in production and in comprehension - might be impaired in patients with PD. However, a clear picture of pragmatic abilities in PD is still missing, as most of the existing studies focused on specific aspects of the pragmatic competence rather than on sketching a complete pragmatic profile. Moreover, little is known on the potential role of protective factors in compensating the decline of communicative skills as the disease progresses. The present study has two aims: (1) to provide a complete picture of pragmatic abilities in patients with PD, by using a comprehensive battery (Assessment of Pragmatic Abilities and Cognitive Substrates, APACS) and by investigating the relationship with other aspects of cognitive functioning (e.g., working memory and Theory of Mind) and (2) to investigate whether Cognitive Reserve, i.e., the resilience to cognitive impairment provided by life experiences and activities, may compensate for the progressive pragmatic deficits in PD. We found that patients with PD, compared to healthy matched controls, had worse performance in discourse production and in the description of scenes, and that these impairments were tightly correlated with the severity of motor impairment, suggesting reduced intentionality of engaging in a communicative exchange. Patients with PD showed also an impairment in comprehending texts and humor, suggesting a problem in inferring from stories, which was related to general cognitive impairment. Notably, we did not find any significant difference between patients and controls in figurative language comprehension, a domain that is commonly impaired in other neurodegenerative diseases. This might be indicative of a specific profile of pragmatic impairment in patients with PD, worth of further investigation. Finally, Cognitive Reserve measures showed a high degree of association with pragmatic comprehension abilities, suggesting that the modification of life-styles could be a good candidate for compensating the possible problems in understanding the pragmatic aspects of language experienced by patients with PD.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Treatment of patients with metastatic melanoma is hampered by drug-resistance and often requires combination with radiotherapy as last-resort option. However, also after radiotherapy, clinical relapses are common. METHODS & RESULTS Our preclinical models indicated a higher rate of tumour relapse when melanoma cells were first treated with BRAFV600E inhibition (BRAFi) followed by radiotherapy as compared to the reverse sequence. Accordingly, retrospective follow-up data from 65 stage-IV melanoma patients with irradiated melanoma brain metastases confirmed a shortened duration of local response of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK)-inhibitor-pretreated compared with MAPK-inhibitor-naïve intracranial metastases. On the molecular level, we identified JARID1B/KDM5B as a cellular marker for cross-resistance between BRAFi and radiotherapy. JARID1Bhigh cells appeared more frequently under upfront BRAFi as compared with upfront radiation. JARID1B favours cell survival by transcriptional regulation of genes controlling cell cycle, DNA repair and cell death. CONCLUSION The level of cross-resistance between combined MAPK inhibition and radiotherapy is dependent on the treatment sequence. JARID1B may represent a novel therapy-overarching resistance marker.

Abstract
BACKGROUND People with idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD) frequently have low activity levels, poor mobility and reduced quality of life. Although increased physical activity may improve mobility, balance and wellbeing, adherence to exercises and activity programs over the longer term can be challenging, particularly for older people with progressive neurological conditions such as PD. Physical activities that are engaging and enjoyable, such as dancing, might enhance adherence over the long term. The objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of a randomized controlled trial of Irish set dancing compared with routine physiotherapy for people with mild to moderately severe PD. METHODS Twenty-four people with idiopathic PD referred for movement rehabilitation were randomized to receive standard physiotherapy exercises or Irish set dancing classes once per week plus a weekly home program for 6 months (12 in each group). The feasibility and safety of the proposed RCT protocol was the main focus of this evaluation. The primary outcome was motor disability measured by the motor component of the UPDRS, which was assessed prior to and after therapy by trained assessors blinded to group assignment. The Timed Up and Go, the Berg Balance Scale and the modified Freezing of Gait Questionnaire were secondary measures. Quality of life of the people with PD was evaluated using the PDQ-39. RESULTS Both the Irish set dancing and physiotherapy exercise program were shown to be feasible and safe. There were no differences between groups in the rate of adverse events such as falls, serious injuries, death or rates of admission to hospital. The physiotherapists who provided usual care remained blind to group allocation, with no change in their standard clinical practice. Compliance and adherence to both the exercise and dance programs were very high and attrition rates were low over the 6 months of therapy. Although improvements were made in both groups, the dance group showed superior results to standard physiotherapy in relation to freezing of gait, balance and motor disability. CONCLUSIONS Irish dancing and physiotherapy were both safe and feasible in this sample from Venice, with good adherence over a comparatively long time period of 6 months. A larger multi-centre trial is now warranted to establish whether Irish set dancing is more effective than routine physiotherapy for enhancing mobility, balance and quality of life in people living with idiopathic PD. Abstract
Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was studied in atmospheric deposition samples collected on a weekly basis in 2005-2009 at 10 forest plots in Italy. The plots covered a wide range of geographical attributes and were representative of the main forest types in Italy. Both spatial and temporal variations in DOC concentrations and fluxes are discussed, with the aim of identifying the main factors affecting DOC variability. DOC concentration increased from bulk to throughfall and stemflow water samples at all sites, as an effect of leaching from leaves and branches, going from 0.7-1.7 mg C L(-1) in bulk samples to 1.8-15.8 mg C L(-1) in throughfall and 4.2-10.7 mg C L(-1) in stemflow, with striking differences among the various plots. Low concentrations were found in runoff (0.5-2.0 mg C L(-1)), showing that the export of DOC via running waters was limited. The seasonality of DOC in throughfall samples was evident, with the highest concentration in summer when biological activity is at a maximum, and minima in winter due to limited DOC production and leaching. Statistical analysis revealed that DOC had a close relationship with organic and total nitrogen, and with nutrient ions, and a negative correlation with precipitation amount. Forest type proved to be a major factor affecting DOC variability: concentration and, to a lesser extent, fluxes were lower in stands dominated by deciduous species. The character of evergreens, and the size and shape of their leaves and needles, which regulate the interception mechanism of dry deposition, are mainly responsible for this.
