Abstract
AIMS The major objective of this study was to investigate the efficacy of heat-treating colostrum on the subsequent growth characteristics (weight gain, body size, dry matter intake and feed efficiency rate) and health of Holstein calves. METHODS A total of 1200 neonatal Holstein calves on one commercial dairy farm were enrolled. The calves were divided into heat-treated (60°C for 90 min) and unheated (raw) colostrum groups. Calf serum IgG and total protein concentrations were measured before and after colostrum consumption. Health characteristics and disease prevalence were recorded during the suckling period. RESULTS Consumption of heat-treated colostrum led to increased serum IgG (P < 0.0001) and total protein (P < 0.0001) concentrations, increased apparent efficacy of IgG absorption (P < 0.0001) and increased general health condition, weight gain (P < 0.0001) and clinical performance. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Heat-treatment of colostrum is an effective method to improve health and increase growth characteristics (weight gain, body size, dry matter intake and feed efficiency rate) of neonatal dairy calves, most likely by decreasing microbial load and facilitating IgG absorption.

Abstract
p-Xylene is considered a recalcitrant compound despite showing a similar aromatic structure to other BTEXs (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene isomers). This study evaluated the p-xylene biodegradation potential of three psychrophilic Pseudomonas strains (Pseudomonas putida S2TR-01, Pseudomonas synxantha S2TR-20, and Pseudomonas azotoformans S2TR-09). The p-xylene metabolism-related catabolic genes (xylM, xylA, and xylE) and the corresponding regulatory genes (xylR and xylS) of the selected strains were investigated. The biodegradation results showed that the P. azotoformans S2TR-09 strain was the only strain that was able to degrade 200 mg/L p-xylene after 60 h at 15 °C. The gene expression study indicated that the xylE (encoding catechol 2,3-dioxygenase) gene represents the bottleneck in p-xylene biodegradation. A lack of xylE expression leads to the accumulation of intermediates and the inhibition of biomass production and complete carbon recovery. The activity of xylene monooxygenase and catechol 2,3-dioxygenase was significantly increased in P. azotoformans S2TR-09 (0.5 and 0.08 U/mg, respectively) in the presence of p-xylene. The expression of the ring cleavage enzyme and its encoding gene (xylE) and activator (xylS) explained the differences in the p-xylene metabolism of the isolated bacteria and can be used as a novel biomarker of efficient p-xylene biodegradation at contaminated sites.

Abstract
Background The quality of colostrum is affected by IgG level and microbial load. Aims The quality of colostrum used in feeding dairy calves and passive immunity transfer in selected dairy farms in Fars province, Iran was investigated. Methods A total of 75 colostrum and neonatal blood samples were collected from 11 herds. The immunological quality of colostrum was assessed using a Brix digital refractometer. The bacteriological quality was assessed by performing total plate count (TPC), total coliform count (TCC), spore-former count, fungi count, and species-specific PCR assay to detect some bacterial species. Results The mean Brix of colostrum samples was 25.4% and 72% of the samples had a Brix score ≥22%. The mean serum Brix and the prevalence of failure of passive transfer (FPT) were 10% and 4%, respectively. The mean TPC, TCC, spore-former count, and fungi count were 3.6 × 105, 2.8 × 104, 3.2 × 104, and 1.1 × 104 CFU/ml, respectively. The results showed that 50, 5.9, and 4% of colostrum samples were positive for Staphylococcus spp., Salmonella spp. and Maycobacterium paratuberculosis, respectively. There was no evidence of contamination with Brucella spp., Corynebacterium bovis and Mycoplasma bovis. Conclusion Considering all colostrum quality indicators comprehensively, only 37.3% of the studied samples met the industry standard. A large number of calves were at risk of receiving poor quality colostrum, especially in terms of microbial contamination. Further researches are needed to evaluate the colostrum management and the effect of bacterial contamination of colostrum on the health of neonate calves in this region.

Abstract
Coronaviruses, which have been known to cause diseases in animals since the 1930s, utilize cellular components during their replication cycle. Lipids play important roles in viral infection, as coronaviruses target cellular lipids and lipid metabolism to modify their host cells to become an optimal environment for viral replication. Therefore, lipids can be considered as potential targets for the development of antiviral agents. This review provides an overview of the roles of cellular lipids in different stages of the life cycle of coronaviruses.

Abstract
Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever is a tick-borne disease with high fatality rate that is endemic in some parts of Asia, Africa and Europe. Rapid diagnostics of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is necessary for appropriate clinical management of this disease and also can be useful in preventing of secondary spread from human-to-human, though, common tests which are used to diagnose Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever have some limitations. Here we review 1) common diagnostic tests for CCHF, 2) limitations in laboratories methods of CCHF and 3) biosensor researches for detection of CCHF. It is necessary to design and develop an effective, rapid, and also low-cost tool such as biosensor to detect Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever. Based on the key role of rapid detection of CCHF in the control of infection, development of a biosensor as a rapid tool seems very major in the diagnosis of CCHF, though, there are limited studies on this field and more researches are needed in this issue.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Probiotics may improve milk quality and the general health status of animals. AIMS The effects of dietary Bacillus coagulans PRM101 on milk components, milk fatty acids (FA), and some health indicators of dairy cows were investigated. METHODS The probiotic was added to the feed of 12 Holstein cows (2 g/cow: 2 × 1011 CFU/cow) for 63 days compared to a control group fed on the basal ration (n=11). Milk and blood samples were taken on days 0, 21, 42, and 63. RESULTS The yields of milk and energy corrected milk (ECM; computed from milk weight and its fat and protein content) decreased linearly and similarly (P=0.60) in both groups. The treatment cows, however, showed quadratic increases in the weights of milk (P=0.03) and ECM (P=0.04) at d42 of the study. Energy corrected milk (d42, P<0.05) and crude protein content of milk (d42, P<0.05; d63, P<0.1) were higher in the cows receiving the probiotic. The proportions of heptadecanoic (C17:0; P=0.002) and linoleic (C18:2; P=0.077) acids in milk fat (g/100 g fat) were higher in the treatment cows on d63. Milk total antioxidant capacity (TAC), malondialdehyde (MDA), and similarly, amyloid A (AA) and haptoglobin (Hp) of milk and blood were not affected. Total antioxidant capacity and MDA were negatively correlated in the control group (r=-0.669, P=0.005). Heptadecanoic acid correlated negatively with milk MDA (r=-0.611, P=0.035) and positively (r=0.591, P=0.043) with serum Hp in the treatment cows. CONCLUSION Dietary B. coagulans PRM101 may improve the proportions of C17:0 and C18:2 FA in milk. Some improvements in milk protein and the health status of the cows may also be anticipated.

Abstract
Rabies virus, as a neurotropic agent, is transmitted to humans usually after animal biting. Rabies is endemic in most Middle Eastern countries. Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) program is recommended for high-risk populations in endemic areas. The present study reported 7 deaths from rabies infection despite human Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) and the evolution of their possible etiologies from 2014 to 2018 in Iran. In this study, 29 rabid human deaths were evaluated despite PEP in 2014-2018. Seven people deceased despite receiving PEP. The most damaged organs were hands and face (71.43%). Injecting anti-Rabies Immunoglobulin (RIG) around the wound, improper cleansing, and delayed PEP were the main causes of PEP failure. In addition, immunodeficiency in a patient was another cause of failure. Our obtained data suggested that immediate precise measures after exposure based on the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendation, maintaining the temperature integrity (cold chain) of vaccines, and RIGs during transportation, and performing detailed injection schedule could prevent PEP failure in most cases. Furthermore, society’s awareness plays a key role in controlling the disease, especially in endemic areas.

Abstract
CONTEXT Mentha longifolia L. (Lamiaceae), a traditional medicinal herb, has been highly valued for exhibiting antimicrobial, antioxidant and antispasmodic properties. OBJECTIVE For the first time, the synergetic anti-inflammatory effects of deuterium depleted water (DDW) and M. longifolia essential oils (ML) were investigated in experimental sepsis. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifty Wistar rats were divided into 5 groups (n = 10): negative control (laparotomy), CLP, treatment groups including the combination of DDWs (15 and 30 ppm) and ML (100 mg/kg b.w) and indomethacin. At 24 h after CLP induction, lipid peroxidation (LP), glutathione (GSH), glutathione in S-transferases (GST), ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP), myeloperoxidase (MPO), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), and COX-2 expression were determined in the plasma and liver tissues. RESULTS Compared with the CLP group, the administration of DDWs and ML significantly (p < 0.05) prevented the increase of LP, COX-2 and PGE2 levels and liver enzymes. Additionally, the decreased levels of FRAP and GSH induced by sepsis were remarkably (p < 0.05) risen by the administration of DDWs and ML in comparison to the CLP group. However, no significant (p > 0.05) differences were observed regarding GST, ALP and bilirubin levels. Our results also proved the synergistic anti-inflammatory activities of the DDWs and ML. The anti-inflammatory effects of the DDWs and ML were confirmed by histopathological studies. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS The combination of DDWs and ML exerted synergistic anti-inflammatory activity against CLP-induced sepsis possibly through modulating oxidative stress/antioxidant parameters.

The anti-inflammatory effects of the DDWs and ML were confirmed by histopathological studies. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS The combination of DDWs and ML exerted synergistic anti-inflammatory activity against CLP-induced sepsis possibly through modulating oxidative stress/antioxidant parameters.

Abstract
Nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) is a ubiquitous transcription factor, which plays a key role in regulating immune response against infection. Increased and/or prolonged activation of NF-κB has been linked to cancer, inflammatory, autoimmune diseases and viral infection. The purpose of this set of data was to evaluate NF-κB gene expression in cecal ligation and puncture (CLP)- induced septic rats and associated hepatic cell changes. Here, we provide the information about the evaluation of NF-κB gene expression using Real-time PCR and histopathological data of liver-related to our study published in the Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences [1]. Also, the information of the primers and more details about gene expression evaluation by real-time PCR of the targeted gene is provided. The data present here introduced another biomarker in liver and lung of CLP- induced septic rats and also confirmed hepatic dysfunction based on the pathological data. The histopathologic assessment showed normal condition in control group, mild infiltration of neutrophils in the liver parenchyma and portal tracts in LAP group (laparotomy) but severe congestion, severe neutrophil infiltration in the liver parenchyma and portal tracts in the CLP group. The data from real-time PCR showed that NF-κB expression was significantly increased in the CLP group compared with the control and LAP group, so it can be a biomarker for (CLP)- induced sepsis. This set of data and our previous study underscored the powerful potential of using the real-time PCR method to determine the involvement of genes such as MPO, CD177, and NF-κB in infectious diseases like sepsis.

Abstract
Background/aim Sepsis is an unregulated systemic response to microbial invasion that can lead to multiple organ failure. This study
aims at investigating the relationships among myeloperoxidase (MPO) and CD177 in major organ systems including whole blood, liver,
and lung tissues in septic rats. Materials and methods Sepsis was induced by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) in female Wistar rats. Whole blood, liver, and lung
samples were obtained from rats of 3 groups (n = 10 for each group, n total = 30: control as a wild-type group, laparotomy group (LAP),
and CLP). Gene expression of MPO and CD177 in targeted tissues was determined by real-time PCR after CLP. MPO activity was also
determined by ELISA method for the result validation of the real-time PCR. Results Expression levels of MPO increased significantly in all targeted organs in the CLP group, while CD177 expression was
upregulated only in lung tissue in response to sepsis (P < 0.05). The results obtained with ELISA analysis also show that MPO level was
significantly increased in all the targeted tissues in the CLP group (P < 0.05). Conclusion A high level of MPO as an inflammatory enzyme can be a potentially novel biomarker for sepsis in all organs. On the other
hand, CD177 may be a marker in lung tissue.

Abstract
CONTEXT Mentha longifolia L. (Lamiaceae), a traditional Iranian plant, possesses antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. OBJECTIVE We investigated the potential protective effects of M. longifolia essential oils (E.Os) on caecal ligation and puncture (CLP) induced liver injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS Wistar Albino rats (n = 50) were grouped as follows: (1) a laparotomy group (LAP); (2) a CLP group (CLP); (3) the treatment groups received orally the E.Os (50 and 100 mg/kg b.w) and indomethacin (2 mg/kg b.w) for 2 weeks. The oxidative stress parameters, liver enzymes and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) level were measured in liver and plasma tissues. The liver was also harvested for the real time PCR of cyclooxygenase (COX-2) expression following histopathological examinations. RESULTS The results indicated that the CLP operation significantly increased lipid peroxidation (LP) [1.79-fold], myeloperoxidase (MPO) [2.76-fold], PGE2 [1.56-fold] besides plasma aspartate aminotransferase (AST) [2.4-fold] and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activities [2.22-fold], while, markedly reduced glutathione (GSH) [0.63-fold] and ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) levels [0.63-fold]. Even COX2 expression significantly increased in the CLP group as compared to the LAP group. Treatments of rats with the E.Os could return all the hepatic and plasma biomarkers to the normal levels. These results were further confirmed by pathological examination on liver indicating that E.Os could successfully improve the CLP-induced liver injuries. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that E.Os is able to protect liver injuries against sepsis via modulating the oxidative stress parameters concomitant with the suppression of inflammatory reactions such as PGE2 and COX-2.

Abstract
This study was performed to determine the clinical, hematologic, and biochemical findings in animals affected with lumpy skin disease (LSD) in southwest Iran. Sixty cattle with LSD were included in this study and compared with 20 healthy ones as the control group. The disease was diagnosed based on clinical examination and confirmed by polymerase chain reaction analysis of the blood samples. The major observed clinical signs included skin nodules, fever, enlarged lymph nodes, and edema. In hematologic assessment, the average numbers of leukocytes, lymphocytes, eosinophils, erythrocytes, and platelets, as well as the average level of hemoglobin in the infected animals were significantly lower than in the control group. Biochemical experiments showed that the serum glucose, total and direct bilirubin, aspartate aminotransferase, and creatine phosphokinase activities in the infected group were significantly elevated. LSD also caused a significant reduction in the levels of serum creatinine, albumin, and iron. In total, LSD was associated with an overall decline in different blood cell types and significant changes in serum biochemical profile. These alterations could be related to the inflammatory disease processes and injuries in various organs, especially the liver. Hematologic and biochemical profiles can be utilized to better understand different aspects of LSD pathogenesis and ultimately improve its prognostic, management, and treatment methods.

Abstract
This report describes an outbreak of purulent mandibular and/or maxillary osteomyelitis caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa in a sheep flock located in the Khuzestan province, Iran. Jaw bones of almost 100 out of 500 mature sheep in a flock became severely deformed with a variably sized firm swelling, without any signs of inflammation in the surrounding soft tissues. The affected animals showed anorexia, depression, swelling of the mandibular and/or maxillary area, loss of cheek teeth and poor body condition. These animals were gradually culled in a period of 3 months. Postmortem examination showed a hard swelling of jaw bones with dirty greenish pus that filled alveolar molar teeth cavities. Histopathologic findings revealed necrotic areas surrounded by mixed population of inflammatory cells with exuberant fibrosis around some area of the lesions and irregular trabeculae of woven bone. In bacteriology, pure culture of P. aeruginosa was isolated from all of 7 sampled sheep. Based on clinical examination, radiography, histopathological features and bacteriology, the lesions were diagnosed as chronic suppurative osteomyelitis caused by P. aeruginosa. According to bacteriological results, the likely source of bacterial infection in this study was drinking water.

Abstract
We aimed to study the effects of an anti-gravity treadmill (AlterG) training on balance and postural stability in children with cerebral palsy (CP). AlterG training was performed 3 days/week for 8 weeks, with up to 45 minutes of training per session. The subject was evaluated before and after the 8-week training. The effects of training on the balance and postural stability was evaluated based on the Romberg test that was performed by using a posturography device. The parameters quantifying Center-of-Pressure (CoP) were calculated using different analytical approaches including power spectral density and principal components analyses. All of the key parameters including the Stabilogram, the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) Energy, the Eigenvectors, and the Eigenvalues of CoP were modified between 14%-84%. The results indicated that the balance features were improved substantially after training. The clinical implication is that the AlterG has the potential to effectively improve postural stability in children with cerebral palsy.

Abstract
Objective To evaluate the effect of orally administered cisapride, bethanechol, and erythromycin on the absorption of colostral IgG in dairy calves. Animals Twenty‐four healthy neonatal Holstein‐Friesian calves. Procedures Calves were randomly assigned to one of the following treatments: 0.9% NaCl solution (2 mL, PO; negative control); erythromycin lactobionate (20 mg/kg BW, PO; anticipated to be a positive control); cisapride (0.5 mg/kg BW, PO); bethanechol chloride (0.5 mg/kg BW, PO). Calves were fed 3 L of pooled bovine colostrum containing acetaminophen (50 mg/kg) by suckling and oroesophageal intubation 30 minutes after each treatment was administered. Jugular venous blood samples were obtained periodically after the start of feeding and plasma total IgG, protein, acetaminophen, and glucose concentrations determined. Abomasal emptying rate was assessed by the time to maximal plasma acetaminophen concentration. Results Oral administration of cisapride facilitated the absorption of colostral IgG and protein. The effect of cisapride on abomasal emptying rate could not be evaluated because cisapride appeared to interfere with acetaminophen metabolism. Based on the total IgG and total protein concentration‐time relationships, the beneficial effects of cisapride appeared to occur early after oral administration and were transient. Conclusions and Clinical Importance Additional studies appear indicated to characterize the effect of cisapride dose on the magnitude and duration of its effect on facilitating the absorption of colostral IgG and protein. Identification of a nonantimicrobial method for increasing abomasal emptying rate, such as cisapride, will potentially provide a practical and effective method for facilitating transfer of passive immunity in colostrum‐fed dairy calves.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although infection of dromedary camels with Cryptosporidium spp. is rare in Iran, it is considered a zoonotic threat to the keepers and herders of camels. Thus we investigated the prevalence of Cryptosporidium in these two hosts in Yazd Province, a semi-arid region in center of Iran. METHODS This study was conducted during 4 seasons (winter 2008, summer 2009, winter 2009 and summer 2010). Fecal samples (n=200) were collected from live camels. Also, 100 abomasal mucosa and related fecal samples of the slaughtered camels were investigated. Stool samples from 100 individuals who were in persistent contact with camels were also obtained. After staining by modified Ziehl-Neelsen method, the prepared specimens were studied microscopically. Results were analyzed using SPSS 16. RESULTS The rate of infection in feces and abomasal mucosa of camels were 20.33% and 12%, respectively. In addition, simultaneous fecal and mucosal infection was detected in 3 cases in winter. Statistical analyses showed no significant relation between infection and age of camels, as well as their sex and the season. Cryptosporidiosis in people who were in long-term contact with camels was also investigated microscopically by obtaining stool samples of 100 individuals (50 in summers, 50 in winters), 24 of them being infected with Cryptosporidium spp. The rate of infection was higher in winter than summer (16/50 compared with 8/50). CONCLUSION The prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp. in camels and involved humans in Yazd Province is relatively considerable and of public health importance.
