Abstract
Interrelationships, origin and phylogenetic affinities of brown trout Salmo trutta populations from the southern Caspian Sea basin, Orumieh and Namak Lake basins in Iran were analysed from complete mtDNA control region sequences, 12 microsatellite loci and morphological characters. Among 129 specimens from six populations, seven haplotypes were observed. Based on mtDNA haplotype data, the Orumieh and southern Caspian populations did not differ significantly, but the Namak basin-Karaj population presented a unique haplotype closely related to the haplotypes of the other populations (0·1% Kimura two-parameter, K2P divergence). All Iranian haplotypes clustered as a distinct group within the Danube phylogenetic grouping, with an average K2P distance of 0·41% relative to other Danubian haplotypes. The Karaj haplotype in the Namak basin was related to a haplotype (Da26) formerly identified in the Tigris basin in Turkey, to a Salmo trutta oxianus haplotype from the Aral Sea basin, and to haplotype Da1a with two mutational steps, as well as to other Iranian haplotypes with one to two mutational steps, which may indicate a centre of origin in the Caspian basin. In contrast to results of the mtDNA analysis, more pronounced differentiation was observed among the populations studied in the morphological and microsatellite DNA data, except for the two populations from the Orumieh basin, which were similar, possibly due to anthropogenic causes.

Abstract
This experiment was conducted to study variations of serum testosterone and seminal characteristics of Markhoz male goats. Blood samples were obtained via jugular vein, and semen was collected by using an artificial vagina from 14 fertile male goats (2–3 years of age), at 15-day intervals starting on 15 July and ending on 30 October 2010 (during breeding and non-breeding season). Semen volume, total sperm (volume×concentration), live sperm (%), abnormal sperm (%) and semen pH were significantly superior during the late summer and early autumn (breeding season). Variation of sperm density, motility and progressive motility was not significant during the sampling period. The results presented show that the lowest and highest levels of lactate dehydrogenase in the seminal plasma were recorded in late October (2.82 U/ml) and in late August (4.81 U/ml), respectively. Moreover, the study indicated that the serum testosterone concentration was higher during late summer and early autumn (p<0.05) than at any other of sampling period. There were negative correlations between volume and sperm density (−0.135, p<0.05), and positive correlations between volume and percentage live sperm (0.224) and percentage progressive motility (0.194, p<0.01). Sperm density was correlated with live sperm (0.200, p<0.05) and progressive motility (0.202, p<0.01). The correlation between live sperm and progressive motility was 0.554 (p<0.01). Furthermore, the results in this study indicated a significant positive correlation between live sperm and LDH (0.450) and a negative correlation between sperm density and LDH concentration (−0.272) (p<0.01). Significant, but positive correlations were found between sperm motility and LDH (0.542) and testosterone concentration (0.522), respectively (p<0.05). In conclusion, this study demonstrated that the best obtained semen was collected in late summer (during decreasing photoperiod) and early autumn (September and October). This also coincides with the natural breeding season of Markhoz goats in Iran.

Abstract
The present study was conducted to determine the following; (1) the influence of different concentrations of glycerol (1, 3, 5 or 7%, v/v) in experiment 1 and DMSO (1, 1.25, 1.5 or 1.75% v/v) in experiment 2 added either at 37 or 5 degrees C and (2) the comparing of best concentration of glycerol with the best of DMSO, obtained in this study, on post-thaw motility, progressive motility, viability and normal acrosome of Markhoz goat sperm. In experiment 1, motility, progressive motility and viability of sperm were improved significantly (p < 0.05) by increasing of glycerol concentrations in the extenders, with the best results obtained with glycerol at 7% added at 37 degrees C. However, the rate of normal acrosome showed an opposite trend, i.e., the extender containing 1% glycerol added at 5 degrees C showed better results (p < 0.05). In experiment 2, the observed results showed similar tendencies to experiment 1. The data showed that the extender containing 1.75% DMSO concentration (the highest level) added at 37 degrees C was significantly (p < 0.05) better than others. The percentage of intact acrosomes decreased significantly (p < 0.05) by increasing of DMSO concentrations, when added at 37 degrees C. Further, the results of 1% DMSO added at 5 degrees C was (p < 0.05) better than other groups. In regard to all evaluated parameters, the observed results in experiment 3 showed that extender containing 7% glycerol added at 37 degrees C was significantly (p < 0.05) better than 7% glycerol added at 5 degrees C and extender containing 1.75% DMSO added at both temperatures. In conclusion, the results of presented study indicated that glycerol is still the cryoprotectant of choice for freezing of Markhoz goat sperm.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Given the importance of airway inflammation in asthma, there has been an effort to incorporate inflammatory markers into its management. Measurement of fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) is a noninvasive marker of airway inflammation; however, the use of the available FeNO analyzer is limited by several factors including its cost and lack of transportability. The aim of this study was to compare the performance of a new hand-held FeNO measuring device (NIOX MINO) to the current clinical standard - the chemiluminescence FeNO analyzer (NIOX). METHODS Subjects 6 years and older presenting to an allergy and asthma clinic underwent FeNO evaluation by NIOX and each of three NIOX MINOs. The mean of two acceptable measurements from the NIOX and the first approved measurement from each NIOX MINO were used for analysis. RESULTS One hundred ten patients aged 6-86 years completed the study. Intrasubject FeNO levels obtained by each of the three NIOX MINOs revealed no significant difference between the measurements (P = 0.59). There was a very strong correlation between FeNO measurements by NIOX and by NIOX MINO (r = 0.98, P < 0.0001). The mean intrasubject FeNO difference between NIOX and NIOX MINO was -0.5 p.p.b. which was not statistically significantly different from zero (P = 0.21). CONCLUSIONS Fractional exhaled nitric oxide measurements by the NIOX MINO showed a strong correlation and a high degree of agreement with the current standard stationary device. The NIOX MINO may be reliably used in clinical practice.

Abstract
There is an abundance of clinical applications using human umbilical cord blood (HUCB) as a source for stem cell populations. Other than haematopoietic progenitors, there are mesenchymal, endothelial stem cells and neuronal precursors, in varying quantities, that are found in human umbilical cord blood. These may be useful in diseases such as immune deficiency and autoimmune disorders. Considering issues of safety, availability, transplant methodology, rejection and side effects, it is contended that a therapeutic stem cell transplant, utilizing stem cells from HUCB, provides a reliable repository of early precursor cells that can be useful in a great number of diverse conditions. Drawbacks of relatively smaller quantities of mononucleated cells in one unit of cord blood can be mitigated by in-vitro expansion procedures, improved in-vivo signalling, and augmentation of the cellular milieu, while simultaneously choosing the appropriate transplantation site and technique for introduction of the stem cell graft.

Abstract
Human rotavirus is the most important cause of severe diarrhoea in infants and young children worldwide. We describe the aetiology of viral diarrhoea and the characteristics of rotavirus infection in Shahrekord, Iran. Two hundred and fifty nine children <5 years old admitted to Hajar Hospital, 245 children with acute diarrhoea attending primary health centres in Shahrekord, and 114 children hospitalised for elective surgery were selected from October 2001 to August 2002. Stool samples were screened for enteric viruses using EM. Rotaviruses were characterised using ELISA, reverse transcription‐polymerase chain reaction (RT‐PCR), and electropherotyping. One hundred and eighty six viruses were identified, of which 146 (78%) were rotavirus. The second most frequent virus was coronavirus, followed by calicivirus. Rotaviruses exhibited a marked seasonal variation, being most frequently isolated from November to February (50% of rotavirus recovered) and affected mostly children <2 years old. The RT‐PCR successfully typed 139 of the 146 (95%) rotavirus G types and 124 (85%) P types. The most frequent P type was, P[8] in 108 (74%), P[4] in 16 (11%), and was P non‐typeable in 22 (15%). Among the G types, G1 was identified in 120 (82%), G2 in 19 (13%), and was G‐non‐typeable in 7 (5%). Our results are the first report of rotavirus genotypes affecting Iranian children. The most frequent G and P types (G1, G2, P[8], and P[4]) are similar to those reported from around the world and will be covered by existing rotavirus vaccines targeting G types G1–G4. J. Med.
