Abstract
OBJECTIVE In the present study, the protective effects of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), Benidipine, and Lacidipine on potential kidney damage induced by 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) were investigated in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS Totally 48 rats were divided into 8 groups: healthy (HG), 5-FU (FUG), ATP+5-FU (AFU), Benidipine+5-FU (BFU), Lacidipine+5-FU (LFU), ATP+Benidipine+5-FU (ABFU), ATP+Lacidipine+5-FU (ALFU) and Benidipine+Lacidipine+5-FU (BLFU). In a 10-day period, ATP (4 mg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally, and Benidipine (4 mg/kg) and Lacidipine (4 mg/kg) were administered orally once a day. On days 1, 3, and 5, 5-FU (100 mg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally one hour after the drug was administered. Afterward, the rats were euthanized, and kidney tissues were removed. An analysis of malondialdehyde, total glutathione, superoxide dismutase, and catalase was performed on tissues, as well as a histopathological examination. A creatinine and blood urea nitrogen analysis were performed on blood samples. RESULTS It was revealed that 5-FU decreased the amount of total glutathione, superoxide dismutase, and catalase activities in rat kidney tissues and increased malondialdehyde. Further, increased serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen levels, as well as histopathological examination of kidney tissues, were found in the 5-FU group. ATP+Benidipine and ATP treatments were the most effective in preventing both biochemical and histopathological changes induced by 5-FU. A treatment with Benidipine improved biochemical and histopathologic data, but not to the same extent as a treatment with ATP+Benidipine and ATP. As a result of Lacidipine+ATP combination, 5-FU-induced biochemical changes in kidney tissue were partially inhibited, but the degree of histopathologic damage remained unchanged. Neither Benidipine+Lacidipine nor Lacidipine showed a protective effect on both biochemical changes and histopathologic damage. CONCLUSIONS It may be possible to prevent nephrotoxicity by adding ATP + Benidipine or ATP to 5-FU treatment.

Abstract
Introduction: In clinical practice, inadequate pain inhibition leads to increased morbidity and mortality. Increased intracellular calcium, oxidants, and proinflammatory cytokines are known to play a role in the pathogenesis of postoperative pain. Therefore, we investigated the analgesic effects of benidipine, paracetamol, and benidipine-paracetamol combination (BPC) on postoperative and normal pain thresholds in rats. Material and methods: Sixty-four male albino Wistar rats weighing 285-295 g were used. The without-incision rats were divided into 4 subgroups: healthy control, benidipine alone, paracetamol alone, and BPC. The scalpel-incision rats were divided into 4 subgroups: scalpel incision, scalpel incision + benidipine, scalpel incision + paracetamol, and scalpel incision + BPC. Paw pain thresholds of rats were measured using a Basile algesimeter. Biochemical analyses were performed on the paw tissues of 6 rats randomly taken from the experimental groups, each containing 8 rats. Rats were sacrificed immediately after the measurements. After the pain threshold tests were finished, the paw tissues were removed and malondialdehyde (MDA), total glutathione (tGSH), cyclooxygenase (COX), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels were measured. Results: There was no significant difference between the groups in paw pain threshold and measured biochemical parameters in rats without incision. The decrease in the pain threshold of the incised paw was also best prevented by BPC, followed by benidipine and then paracetamol. Furthermore, increases in scalpel-incised paw tissue MDA, COX-2, and IL-6 levels and the decrease in tGSH were significantly suppressed by benidipine and BPC, while paracetamol could only significantly inhibit the increase in IL-6 production. Conclusion: The combination of the L-type Ca2+ channel blocker benidipine and paracetamol (BPC) may provide potent analgesia. Our experimental results support that BPC may be useful in the treatment of severe pain that cannot be adequately inhibited by paracetamol.

Abstract
The role of oxidants and proinflammatory cytokines in the pathogenesis of pneumonia caused by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) has been demonstrated. The present study aims to investigate the protective effect of ethyl acetate extract (EtOAc) obtained from Usnea longissima (UL) against acute oxidative and inflammatory lung damage due to S. aureus infection in rats. Albino Wistar-type male rats were divided into three groups: Healthy (HG), S. aureus inoculated (SaG), and S. aureus inoculated + ULEtOAc administered (SUL). SaG (n = 6) and SUL (n = 6) group rats' left nostrils (excluding HG) were inoculated with 0.1 ml bacterial mixture. After 24 hours, ULEtOAc (50 mg/kg) was administered orally to the SUL group, and the same volume of normal saline was administered orally to the HG (n = 6) and SaG groups. This procedure was performed once a day for seven days. Levels of oxidant and antioxidant parameters such as malondialdehyde (MDA) and total glutathione (tGSH), as well as pro-inflammatory cytokine levels such as nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-one beta (IL-1β), were measured in removed lung tissues. Tissues were also examined histopathologically. Biochemical results showed that ULEtOAc significantly suppressed the increase of MDA, NF-κB, TNF-α, and IL-1β levels and the decrease of tGSH caused by S. aureus in lung tissue. S. aureus inoculation caused severe mononuclear cell infiltration in interstitial areas, severe lymphoid hyperplasia in bronchial-associated lymphoid tissue and severe alveolar edema, histopathologically. Treatment with ULEtOAc had an attenuating effect on these histopathological findings. Experimental results from this study suggest that ULEtOAc may be beneficial in treating S. aureus-induced oxidative and inflammatory lung damage.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the role of adrenaline (ADR), noradrenaline (NDR), and cortisol in the pathogenesis of the analgesic potency, duration, and epilepsy-like toxic effect of meperidine. Materials and Methods: The experimental animals were separated into 11 groups of six rats. In the meperidine (MPD) and metyrosine + meperidine (MMPD) groups, paw pain thresholds were measured before and after the treatment between the first and sixth hours (one hour apart). In addition, ADR and NDR analyses were performed before and after the treatment, between the first and fourth hours (one hour apart). For the epilepsy experiment, caffeine, caffeine + meperidine, and caffeine + meperidine + metyrapone groups were created, and the treatment was applied for 1 day or 7 days. Groups were created in which caffeine was used at both 150 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg. Epileptic seizures were observed in epilepsy groups, latent periods were determined, and serum cortisol levels were measured. Results: In the MPD group, pain thresholds increased only at the first and second hours compared to pre-treatment, while ADR increased at the third hour, leading to a decrease in pain thresholds. In the MMPD group, the increase in paw pain thresholds at 1 and 6 h was accompanied by a decrease in ADR and NDR. In the caffeine (150 mg/kg) + meperidine group, 1-day treatment did not cause epileptic seizures, while seizures were observed and cortisol levels increased in the group in which treatment continued for 7 days. When cortisol levels were compared between the group in which caffeine (300 mg/kg) + meperidine + metyrapone was used for 7 days and the animals receiving caffeine (300 mg/kg) + metyrapone for 7 days, it was found that cortisol levels decreased and the latent period decreased. Conclusions: The current study showed that if serum ADR and cortisol levels are kept at normal levels, a longer-lasting and stronger analgesic effect can be achieved with meperidine, and epileptic seizures can be prevented.

Abstract
Current study aimed to research the effect of Hippophae rhamnoides (HRE) on potantial oral oxidative and inflammatory damage of 5-FU in rats. The rats were assigned to three groups; healthy (HG), 5-FU 100mg/kg (FUG) and HRE 50mg/kg +5-FU 100mg/kg (HRFU). The 5-FU was injected in the FUG group intraperitoneally. The HRFU was injected 5-FU at 100mg/kg IP one hour after the 50mg/kg HRE was given orally. Olive oil was used as a solvent for the HG. HRE was given to the rats three times a day for ten days. 5-FU was given one dose on the 1st, 3rd and 5th days. On the 10th day, the tissues removed from the animals were euthanized with high-dose anaesthesia and were macroscopically examined. The levels of the oxidant, antioxidant and proinflammatory cytokines were investigated.It was seen that HRE alleviated the symptoms of severe mucositis by antagonizing the effects of 5-FU on oxidant, antioxidant and proinflammatory cytokines such as malondialdehyde, total glutathione, superoxide dismutase, catalase, nuclear factor kappa-B and interleukin-6 in inner cheek and tongue tissue. These results recommend that HRE may be benefical in the cure of 5-FU-associated oral mucositis.

Abstract
Diabetic neuropathies are the most frequent complication of diabetes. While numerous metabolic pathways are disrupted in diabetic neuropathy, oxidative stress has been indicated as a significant reason for this condition. In this study, the effect of carvacrol, which has antioxidant effects, on experimental diabetic neuropathy and neuropathic pain was investigated. Alloxan was used to induce diabetes in the experiment. Diabetes was created by administering 120mg/kg of alloxan intraperitoneally (i.p) once a day for 3 days. Rats with a blood glucose concentration above 250mg/kg in the blood taken from the tail veins at the end of three days were considered diabetic. Rats were categorized under healthy control (HG), alloxan-induced hyperglycemia (AG), and alloxan-induced hyperglycemia + carvacrol-treated (ACG) groups. Carvacrol was i.p injected at 50 mg/kg dose to the ACG (n=6) group of rats with hyperglycemia. The same volume of distilled water as the solvent was applied in the same way to AG (n=6) and HG (n=6) rat groups. This procedure was repeated once a day for three months.Carvacrol showed anti-hyperglycemic effect in diabetic rats, protective effect against lowering pain threshold and analgesic activity in rat paws in rats. Carvacrol prevented the oxidant/antioxidant balance from changing in favor of oxidants. The results supported that carvacrol is an agent against alloxan-induced peripheral diabetic neuropathic pain.

Abstract
Background: Acrylamide causes hepatotoxicity with the effect of oxidative stress and inflammatory processes. Carvacrol is a monoterpenic phenol with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Aims: To determine the effects of carvacrol on oxidative liver injury induced by acrylamide administration in rats. Methods: Rats were divided into three groups of six animals each: healthy group acrylamide group (ACR), and acrylamide + carvacrol group (TACR). First, carvacrol (50 mg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally to the CACR group. One hour later, acrylamide (20 mg/kg) was given orally to the ACR and CACR groups. This procedure was performed for 30 days, after which the animals were sacrificed. The malondialdehyde (MDA) and total glutathione (tGSH) levels, total oxidant (TOS) and total antioxidant status (TAS), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-1beta (IL-1β), and nuclear factor kappa b (NF-κB) were measured in the excised liver tissues. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels were determined in blood serum samples. Liver tissues were also examined histopathologically. Results: In the ACR group, malondialdehyde, TOS, ALT, AST levels, and NF-κB, IL-1β, and TNF-α levels were found to be high, and tGSH and total antioxidant status levels were low. In addition, diffuse degenerative changes and necrosis in hepatocytes, and moderate inflammation in the portal region were detected in the liver tissues of the ACR group. While carvacrol prevented the biochemical changes induced by acrylamide, it also alleviated the damage in the histological structure. Conclusion: Carvacrol may be used for liver damage caused by acrylamide.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) can cause damage to distant organs. Rutin is known to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and inhibits cytokine and polymorphonuclear leukocyte (PMNL) infiltration. It may prevent the development of reperfusion injury. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to examine the role of PMNLs in distant organ (lung) injury after a liver I/R procedure, and to evaluate the protective effects of rutin in rats using biochemical and immunohistochemical methods. MATERIAL AND METHODS In this study, 18 Wistar albino male rats (255-275 g) were used. Experimental animals were divided into 3 groups: a liver I/R (LIR) group, a 50 mg/kg rutin+liver I/R (RLIR) group and a sham operation (SG) control group. Experimental results obtained from the RLIR group were compared with the LIR and SG groups. RESULTS Blood malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in the RLIR and SG groups were significantly lower compared to the LIR group (p < 0.001). Blood myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity in the RLIR and SG groups was significantly lower compared to the LIR group (p < 0.001). Total glutathione (tGSH) levels in the RLIR and SG groups were significantly higher compared to the LIR group (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Rutin can be used to prevent distant organ (lung) damage due to liver I/R. However, more extensive studies are needed on this issue.

Abstract
Ovarian torsion can be defined as the bending of the ovaries on the supporting ligament, disrupting both venous and arterial blood circulation. Insufficient blood flow causes ovarian tissue hypoxia and leads to ischemia. This study aimed to investigate whether tocilizumab has a protective effect on ischemia-reperfusion injury due to ovarian torsion in rats. Eighteen female Wistar albino rats were divided into three equal groups (Sham (SG), ischemia-reperfusion (OIR), and ischemia-reperfusion+tocilizumab (OIRT)). Degeneration, necrosis, vascular dilatation/congestion, interstitial edema, hemorrhage, and polymorphonuclear lymphocyte (PMNL) infiltration scores were significantly different between the groups (p=0.001 for all parameters). Moreover, the OIRT group had a significant improvement in these criteria compared to the OIR group (p<0.05). Additionally, there was a considerable difference between OIRT and OIR groups in the number of primordial, developing, and atretic follicles groups (p<0.05), while there was no difference in the number of corpus luteum (p=0.052). Stress markers or cytokines, such as MDA, tGSH, NF-κB, TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6, were significantly different between groups (p<0.05). Furthermore, a significant improvement was found in the measured variables when the OIRT group was compared with the OIR group (p<0.05). Tocilizumab may be an alternative option for treating ischemia-reperfusion injury due to ovarian torsion.

Abstract
Purpose: To examine the probable beneficial effects of taxifolin against acrylamide damage in lung tissue.Methods: 18 male albino Wistar rats were divided into healthy (HG), acrylamide (AG) and taxifolin + acrylamide (TAG) groups. Once a day for 30 days, acrylamide was orally administered to the AG group (50 mg/kg), while ACL (50 mg/kg) and TAX (20 mg/kg) were orally administered to TAG group. Protein concentration, malondialdehyde (MDA), and total glutathione (tGSH) levels as well as oxidant and antioxidant molecules concentrations of the rat lung tissues were measured. In addition, degree of mononuclear (MN) cell infiltration and bronchial-associated lymphoid tissue (BALT) hyperplasia was evaluated by the degree of hyperplasia (absent, mild, moderate, severe). The histopathological andbiochemical data the groups were compared.Results: When compared in terms of MDA levels, it was found that the AG group had high MDA levels, and the TAG group had low MDA levels. (p < 0.001). TAG group was found to have a higher tGSH level than the AG group (p < 0.001). Compared to the AG group, lower TOS and higher TAS levels were obtained in the TAG group (p < 0.001). In addition, when TOS levels of TAG and HG groups were compared, the TOS levels between the two groups were statistically insignificant (p = 0.213). It has been observed that TAX administration prevents the increase in NF-ƘB level. When the NF-ƘB levels of the AG and TAG groups were compared with each other, there was a statistically significant difference (p = 0.001). In the AG group, severe MN cell hyperplasia and BALT hyperplasia were observed histopathologically. It was determined that these findings were alleviated in the TAG group. A histopathologically significant difference was found between AG and TAG groups (p < 0.05).Conclusion: Taxifolin has beneficial effects against lung injury caused by acrylamide, a healthdamaging environmental factor. Regular use of taxifolin can be recommended, especially in people who are known to have intense contact with acrylamide. There is a need for research studies on this subject.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hyperglycemia can be considered a determining factor in the development of diabetic neuropathy as well as neuropathic pain. There is a relationship between the excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the pathogenesis of diabetic neuropathic pain. Taxifolin, on the other hand, is a flavonoid that has been documented to inhibit ROS production. OBJECTIVES To investigate the effects of taxifolin, which has antioxidant and neuroprotective effects, on alloxan-induced hyperglycemia-induced neuropathy and neuropathic pain, biochemically and histopathologically. MATERIAL AND METHODS The albino Wistar male rats were divided into 3 groups: healthy group (HG), only alloxan group (AXG) and alloxan+taxifolin group (ATG). Hyperglycemia in animals was caused through intraperitoneal injection of alloxan at a dose of 120 mg/kg. Paw pain thresholds of animals were measured using Basile algesimeter. Sciatic nerve tissues were examined biochemically and histopathologically in order to evaluate neuropathy. RESULTS Our experimental results revealed that taxifolin significantly prevented the increase of plasma glucose concentration level with alloxan administration, the decrease of the paw pain threshold related to hyperglycemia, the change of oxidant-antioxidant balance in the sciatic nerve tissue in favor of oxidants, and the deterioration of tissue morphology in animals. CONCLUSIONS Our experimental results indicate that taxifolin alleviates alloxan-induced hyperglycemia-related neuropathy and neuropathic pain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ischemia is a condition in which blood flow to tissues is decreased or entirely stopped for various reasons. The reperfusion process exacerbates damage caused by ischemia in the organs and tissues. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are mainly responsible for ischemia-reperfusion (IR) damage. ROS increase results in lipid peroxidation (LPO) and oxidative stress. In the literature, taxifolin reportedly suppresses ROS production. This study aimed to determine the effect of taxifolin, which is a flavonoid, on IR injury of the sciatic nerve in rats. METHODS This study divided 30 albino Wistar rats into 3 groups: IR without medication (IR) group, taxifolin applied IR (TAX+IR) group, and only dissection made to the sciatic nerve sham group (SHAM). Sciatic nerve injury was induced by applying 2 hours of ischemia and 3 hours of reperfusion to the abdominal aorta and iliolumbar arteries. Biochemical and histopathologic investigations then were performed on sciatic nerve tissues. Malondialdehyde, total glutathione, glutathione reductase, and glutathione peroxidase were analyzed as oxidative stress markers, and tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-1β levels were evaluated as inflammatory stress markers in biochemical tests. RESULTS The IR group has statistically significantly high oxidant and cytokine levels and low antioxidant levels compared with the TAX+IR group. Taxifolin treatment was also shown to cause significant histopathologic improvement. CONCLUSIONS We suggest that taxifolin may be effective in preventing IR injury of the sciatic nerve.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cisplatin is a non-specific platinum-based (derivative) chemotherapeutic agent that causes an increase in free radicals activity in the liver. Antioxidant activity of taxifolin has been demonstrated previously, and it has been reported that taxifolin inhibits the hydroxyl, radical in experimental studies. OBJECTIVES No studies were found in the current literature examining the protective effect of taxifolin on cisplatin-induced oxidative liver damage. We aimed to determine the protective effect of taxifolin on cisplatin-induced hepatotoxicity in an experimental study. MATERIAL AND METHODS In total, 18 albino Wistar male rats were assigned into 3 groups: healthy controls (HC group), 5 mg/kg of cisplatin administered for 8 days (CIS group) and 50 mg/kg of taxifolin + 5 mg/kg of cisplatin administered for 8 days (TCG group). Malondialdehyde (MDA), total glutathione (tGSH), total oxidant (TOS), and total antioxidant (TAS) capacity levels were measured in the extracted liver tissue. RESULTS Liver tissue MDA and TOS levels were significantly higher in the CIS group. In contrast, tGSH and TAS levels were significantly lower in the CIS group, administered cisplatin alone (p < 0.001), compared to other groups. In the TCG group, administered cisplatin + taxifolin, MDA and TOS levels were significantly lower, whereas tGSH and TAS levels were significantly higher than in the CIS group (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that taxifolin may be useful in preventing cisplatin-related liver injury.

Abstract
It is known that the combined use of antibiotics, such as isoniazid and rifampicin, in the treatment of tuberculosis causes oxidative kidney damage. The aim of this study was to biochemically and histopathologically investigate the effect of lycopene on oxidative kidney damage due to the administration of isoniazid and rifampicin in albino Wistar male rats. Lycopene at a dose of 5 mg/kg was orally administered to lycopene+isoniazid+rifampicin (LIR) rats, and normal sunflower oil (0.5 mL) was orally administered to isoniazid+rifampicin (IR) and healthy control (HG) rats as vehicle by gavage. One hour after the administration of lycopene and vehicle, 50 mg/kg isoniazid and rifampicin were given orally to the LIR and IR groups. This procedure was performed once a day for 28 days. Rats were sacrificed by a high dose of anesthesia at the end of this period, and oxidant-antioxidant parameters were measured in the removed kidney tissues. Creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels were measured in blood samples, and kidney tissues were also evaluated histopathologically. The combined administration of isoniazid and rifampicin changed the oxidant-antioxidant balance in favor of oxidants, and it increased blood urea nitrogen and creatinine levels, which are indicators of kidney function. Co-administration of isoniazid and rifampicin also caused oxidative kidney damage. Lycopene biochemically and histopathologically decreased oxidative kidney damage induced by isoniazid and rifampicin administration. These results suggested that lycopene may be beneficial in the treatment of nephrotoxicity due to isoniazid and rifampicin administration.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acrolein is a reactive aldehyde that forms during burning of wood and other fuels. It is also a product of lipid peroxidation (LPO) reactions and is present in cigarette smoke. Acrolein is known to cause oxidative stress and inflammatory nerve tissue damage. Lutein is a tetraterpenoid molecule with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. There appear to be no studies on the effect of lutein on vestibulocochlear nerve damage induced by acrolein. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of lutein on vestibulocochlear nerve damage induced by acrolein in rats using biochemical and histopathological methods. METHODS The rats were divided into three groups (n = 6, for each group) a healthy control group (HG), an acrolein (ACR) group and a lutein and acrolein (LACR) group. In the LACR group, lutein was administered (1 mg/kg) via oral gavage. The ACR and HG groups received saline via oral gavage. Then, 1 h after the administration of lutein and saline, the LACR and ACR groups were treated with 3 mg/kg of acrolein via oral gavage. This procedure was repeated once a day for 30 days. RESULTS The results of biochemical experiments showed that in the vestibulocochlear nerve tissues of the animals treated with acrolein, the levels of malondialdehyde, total oxidants, nuclear factor kappa b, tumor necrosis factor alpha and interleukin 1 beta significantly increased, whereas the levels of total glutathione and total antioxidants decreased as compared to those in the HG and LACR groups. In addition, severe histopathological damage was observed in vestibulocochlear nerve tissue of the acrolein group, whereas this damage was alleviated in the lutein group. CONCLUSION Lutein protected vestibulocochlear nerve tissue from acrolein-associated oxidative and proinflammatory damage. This suggests that lutein might be useful in preventing or treating acrolein-induced ototoxicity.

Abstract
Purpose: To examine the effect of desloratadine on kidney ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury in albino Wistar male rats using biochemical and histopathological methods.Methods: The treated with ischemia-reperfusion + 5 mg/kg desloratadine (IRD) group (n-6) was given 5 mg/kg desloratadine by gavage orally, and applied renal ischemia-reperfusion (BIR) group (n-6) and control (SG) group undergoing Sham operation (n-6) rats were given distilled water as solvent one hour before ketamine anesthesia. During the anesthesia period, ischemia was induced for 2 h unilaterally in the left kidney of all rats followed by reperfusion for 6 h. The kidneys of the SG group had sham operation without any intervention.Results: Our biochemical test results showed that malondialdehyde (MDA), nuclear factor kappa (NF-κB), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), interleukin one beta (IL-1β), creatinine, and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels were significantly increased in the BIR group compared to the healthy control and IRD groups treated with desloratadine. Histopathological results were revealed tubular dilatation, tubular necrosis, loss of brushy margins, cast formation, and apoptotic bodies in tubular epithelial cells in the BIR group. There were no histopathological findings except for the swelling of tubule epithelial cells and the accumulation of proteinous material in some tubule lumens in renal tissue of desloratadine-treated rats.Conclusions: Experimental results suggested that desloratadine may be useful in the treatment of renal I/R injury.

Abstract
Cytarabine is effectively used in the treatment of adult acute leukemia, but it has a dose-limiting side effect of fatal pulmonary oedema because it increases the vascular permeability of the alveolar capillaries. The aim of the present study was to conduct a radiological, biochemical and histopathological investigation of the effect of rutin on cytarabine-associated pulmonary oedema in rats. Rats were treated with a combination of rutin+cytarabine by administering oral rutin at a dose of 50 mg/kg; other rat groups were orally administered the same volume of physiological saline. One hour after administration of rutin or saline, the rutin+cytarabine and cytarabine groups received an intraperitoneal injection of cytarabine (200 mg/kg). This administration procedure was repeated once a day for 14 days. Radiologically, 50% of the animals given cytarabine alone showed lung oedema, but the rutin+cytarabine group showed no oedema. The inclusion of rutin decreased the amounts of cytarabine-associated malondialdehyde, tumour necrosis factor-α, and nuclear factor-κB in the lung tissue. Rutin also inhibited the reduction of total glutathione by nitric oxide. These findings suggest that rutin may be a beneficial adjunct that can minimise the development of cytarabine-associated pulmonary oedema.

Abstract
Background Liver ischemia reperfusion (I/R) damage which is frequently seen in clinical hepatobiliary surgeries has no effective treatment for it. Liv-52, known to have hepatoprotective effects, is a natural antioxidant drug licensed by the Ministry of Health of India. The aim of our study is to investigate the effect of Liv-52 on liver damage induced by I/R in rats. Methods Albino Wistar male rats were divided into three groups; liver I/R (IR), 20 mg/kg Liv-52 + liver ischemia reperfusion (LIR) and sham operation applied to control group (HG). Liv-52 was administered to the LIR group (n = 6) 1 h prior to I/R application and distilled water was given orally to IR (n = 6) and HG (n = 6) groups as a solvent. Ischemia was determined as 1 h, and reperfusion was identified as 6 h in animals. Results Increased levels of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase and lactate dehydrogenase, malondialdehyde, myeloperoxidase, and decreased levels of superoxide dismutase, and glutathione related enzymes caused by I/R application have been converged to healthy group level with Liv-52 treatment and the damage in liver tissue has been improved histopathologically. Conclusions Liv-52 may be beneficial for preventing liver I/R damage in pre-surgery application.

Abstract
Objective: Psychological stress is an important factor triggering depression and anxiety. Infertility is known to cause stress; however, it is not clearly known whether stress causes infertility as well. In addition, there are different opinions accounting for the relation of stress-induced oxidative stress to infertility and intrauterine growth restriction. The aim of the study is to examine the effect of sertraline, diazepam and melatonin on the infertility, intrauterine growth restriction and oxidative stress that can be caused by forced immobilization stress management (FISM) in female rats.Materials and methods: Wistar rats were grouped as healthy rats (HG) applied distilled water, stress treated control group (SC), and 20 mg/kg sertraline + stress (SS), 2 mg/kg diazepam + stress (DS) and 10 mg/kg melatonin + stress (MS) treated rats. The medicines were administered orally once a day for 30 days. At the end of this period, oxidant/antioxidant parameters were measured through the blood samples collected from the tail veins of all rats. Then the rats were kept in a suitable environment for 2 months for breeding.Results: FISM caused oxidative stress in blood serum of animals, infertility and intrauterine growth restriction (decrease in birth weight of the baby). Best medicines to suppress FISM-related oxidative stress are melatonin > diazepam > sertraline respectively, while sertraline > diazepam > melatonin were most successful in terms of preventing infertility. The best medicines preventing the FISM-caused intrauterine growth restriction were found to be melatonin > diazepam > sertraline, respectively.Conclusion: FISM causes oxidative stress in animals. Oxidative stress is understood to affect the intrauterine growth negatively although it is not a major component in the pathogenesis of infertility. While melatonin is only effective in preventing the oxidative stress-related intrauterine growth restriction, antidepressants and anxiolytic treatment were found to be helpful in preventing both infertility and intrauterine growth restriction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS This study aimed to investigate the effect of lutein on methotrexate (MTX)-induced pulmonary toxicity in rats biochemically and histopathologically. METHODS The rats in the MTX + lutein (MTXL, n = 6) group were given 1 mg/kg of lutein orally. A 0.9% NaCl solution was administered orally to the MTX (n = 6) group and the healthy group (HG, n = 6). One hour later, a single 20 mg/kg dose of MTX was injected intraperitoneally in the MTXL and MTX. Lutein or 0.9% NaCl solution was administered once a day for 5 days. At the end of this period, malondialdehyde (MDA), myeloperoxidase (MPO), total glutathione (tGSH), interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β), and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) were measured in the lung tissues from the animals euthanized with 50 mg/kg thiopental sodium anesthesia. Subsequently, histopathological examinations were performed. RESULTS The levels of MDA, MPO, IL-1β, and TNF-α in the lung tissue of the MTX were significantly higher than those of the MTXL and HG groups (p < 0.0001), and the amount of tGSH was lower. The histopathological findings in the MTX group, in which the oxidants and cytokines were higher, were more severe. CONCLUSION Lutein prevented the MTX-induced oxidative lung damage biochemically and histopathologically. This result indicates that lutein may be useful in the treatment of MTX-induced lung damage.

Abstract
Purpose To investigate the effects of the EtOAc extract of U.
longissima which is uninvestigated previously on
esophagogastric cancer induced in rats with
N-methyl-N-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidin (MNNG). Methods The anticancer activity of EtOAc extract of U. longissima
was examined in the esophagogastric adenocarcinoma models induced in rats
with MNNG. EtOAc extract of U. longissima, 50 and 100 mg/kg
oral doses were administered once daily for six months. MNNG induced
differentiated and undifferentiated type adenocarcinomas in the esophageal
and gastric tissues of rats. Results EtOAc extract of U. longissima obtained from U.
longissima prevented gastric and esophageal cancerogenesis
induced in rats with MNNG. EtOAc extract of U. longissima
did not have a lethal effect at doses of 500, 1000 and 2000 mg/kg. The
prominent anticarcinogenic activity of EtOAc extract of U.
longissima 50 and 100 mg/kg suggests that it is not toxic and
it is selective to the cancer tissue. Conclusion This information may shed light on clinical implementation of EtOAc extract
of U. longissima in future.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP), administered via sugar water, on retinal neovascularisation in rats. Animals were assigned to three groups, namely the TPP sugar-water group (TPSWG, n = 12), the control group (CG, n = 12) and the healthy group (HG, n = 12). The TPSWG was injected intraperitoneally with TPP once a day for 6 months. CG and HG rats were given distilled water in the same way. TPSWG and CG rats were left free to access an additional 0.292 mmol /ml of sugar water for 6 months. The fasting blood glucose (FBG) levels of the animals were measured monthly. After 6 months, biochemical, gene expression and histopathologic analyses were carried out in the retinal tissues removed from the animals after they were killed. The measured FBG levels were 6.96 ± 0.09 mmol/ml (p < 0.0001 vs. HG), 6.95 ± 0.06 mmol/ml (p < 0.0001 vs. HG) and 3.94 ± 0.10 mmol/ml in the CG, TPSWG and HG groups, respectively. The malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were found to be 2.82 ± 0.23 (p < 0.0001 vs. HG), 1.40 ± 0.32 (p < 0.0001 vs. HG) and 1.66 ± 0.17 in the CG, TPSWG and HG, respectively. Interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β) gene expression was increased (3.78 ± 0.29, p < 0.0001) and total glutathione (tGSH) was decreased (1.32 ± 0.25, p < 0.0001) in the retinal tissue of CG compared with TPSWG (1.92 ± 0.29 and 3.18 ± 0.46, respectively). Increased vascularisation and oedema were observed in the retinal tissue of CG, while the retinal tissues of TPSWG and HG rats had a normal histopathological appearance. A carbohydrate-rich diet may lead to pathological changes in the retina even in nondiabetics, but this may be overcome by TPP administration.

Abstract
Thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP) is the active metabolite of thiamine. This study aimed to investigate the effects of thiamine and TPP on cisplatin-induced peripheral neuropathic pain (PNP). Male albino Wistar type Rattus norvegicus were divided into six groups (n=6) that received 2 mg/kg cisplatin (CIS), 25 mg/kg thiamine (TM), 2 mg/kg cisplatin+25 mg/kg thiamine (CTM), 25 mg/kg TPP (TPP), 2 mg/kg cisplatin+25 mg/kg TPP (CTPP), or distilled water (healthy group; HG) for 8 days intraperitoneally. Analgesic effect was measured with a Basile Algesimeter. IL-1β, malondialdehyde (MDA), total glutathione (tGSH), thiamine, and TPP were determined in blood samples. Histopathological examinations were performed on removed sciatic nerves. The percent analgesic effects of the CTM and CTPP groups were calculated to be 21.3% and 82.9%, respectively. Increased production of IL-1β and MDA by cisplatin was inhibited by TPP, while it was not inhibited by thiamine. Conversion of thiamine to TPP significantly decreased in the CIS group. Histopathological and biochemical investigations demonstrated that hyperalgesia and sciatic nerve damage developed in the CIS and CTM groups with low TPP levels. These results indicate that cisplatin inhibits the formation of TPP from thiamine, leading to severe PNP. This finding suggests that TPP may be more beneficial than thiamine for the treatment of cisplatin-induced PNP.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION We compared the side effects of ketamine and thiopental used alone and of a ketamine/thiopental combination dose on the brain,heart, and bronchial tissues of rats. MATERIAL AND METHODS Three groups received intraperitoneal injections of 30 mg/kg ketamine (K-30); 15 mg/kg thiopental (T-15); or of both in combination (KTSA). These doses were doubled in another set of study groups (K-60, T-30, and KTA groups, respectively). Optimal anesthesia duration was examined in all groups. RESULTS Anesthesia did not occur with 30 mg/kg ketamine or 15 mg/kg thiopental. However, when used alone ketamine and thiopental led to oxidative stress in the striatum, heart, and bronchial tissues. Conversely, combined administration of anesthetics and subanesthetic doses were found not to create oxidative stress in any of these areas. The highest level of adrenaline in blood samples collected from the tail veins was measured in the KTA-60, and the lowest amount in the T-30. Creatine kinase activity was highest in the KTA-60 group (p < 0.001). When we compared for all 5 groups to untreated control group; the creatine kinase-MB activities were significiantly different in K-30, T-15 and T-30 (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The studied doses of ketamine led to oxidative stress by increasing the amount of adrenaline. Thiopental increased oxidative stress with decreases in adrenaline. A longer anesthetic effect with minimal adverse events may be achieved by ketamine and thiopental in combination.

Abstract
Purpose: Information is lacking on the protective effects of thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP) against hyperglycemia-induced retinopathy in rats. This study investigated the biochemical and histopathological aspects of the effect of TPP on hyperglycemia-induced retinopathy induced by alloxan in rats. Materials and Methods: The rats were separated into a diabetic TPP-administered group (DTPG), a diabetes control group (DCG) and a healthy group (HG). While the DTPG was given TPP, the DCG and HG were administered distilled water as a solvent at the same concentrations. This procedure was repeated daily for 3 months. At the end of this period, all of the rats were euthanized under thiopental sodium anesthesia, and biochemical and histopathological analyses of the ocular retinal tissues were performed. The results of the DTPG were compared with those of the DCG and HG. Results: TPP prevented hyperglycemia by increasing the amount of malondialdehyde and decreasing endogen antioxidants, including total glutathione, glutathione reductase, glutathione S-transferase and superoxide dismutase. In addition, the amounts of the DNA oxidation product 8-hydroxyguanine were significantly lower in the retinas of the DTPG compared to the DCG. In the retinas of the DCG, there was a marked increase in vascular structures and congestion, in addition to edema. In contrast, little vascularization and edema were observed in the DTPG, and there was no congestion. The results suggest that TPP significantly reduced the degree of hyperglycemia-induced retinopathy. Conclusions: The results of this study indicate that TPP may be useful for prophylaxis against diabetic retinopathy.

Abstract
AIM To compare the effects of thiamine pyrophosphate (TPP) and thiamine (TM) in oxidative optic neuropathy in rats induced by ethambutol. METHODS The animals were divided into four groups: a control group (CG), an ethambutol control (ETC) group, TM plus ethambutol group (TMG), and TPP plus ethambutol group (TPPG). One hour after intraperitoneal administration of TM 20 mg/kg to the TMG group and TPP 20 mg/kg to TPPG group, 30 mg/kg ethambutol was given via gavage to all the groups but the CG. This procedure was repeated once daily for 90d. After that period, all rats were exposed to high levels of anaesthesia in order to investigate the gene expression of malondialdehyde and glutathione in removed optic nerve tissue and histopathologically to examine these tissues. RESULTS Malondialdehyde gene expression significantly increased, whereas glutathione gene expression significantly decreased in the ETC group compared to the CG. TM could not prevent the increase of malondialdehyde gene expression and the decrease of glutathione, while TPP significantly could suppress. Histopathologically, significant vacuolization in the optic nerve, single-cell necrosis in the glial cells, and a decrease in oligodendrocytes were observed in the ETC group. Vacuolization in the optic nerve, a decrease in oligodendrocytes and single-cell necrosis were found in the TMG group, while no pathological finding was observed in the TPPG group except for mild vacuolization. CONCLUSION TPP protects the optic nerve against the ethambutol-induced toxicity but TM does not. TPP can be beneficial in prophilaxis of optic neuropathy in ethambutol therapy.

Abstract
Objective: The main purpose of the present study was to assess the radiographic, histological, and mechanical effects of gabapentin on fracture healing in a rat model of femur fracture. Materials and methods: A standard transverse fracture of the mid-diaphysis was created. A total of 60 female Wistar-Albino rats with the mean age of 13.5 ± 1.2 weeks were used for this experimental trial. The rats were randomized into four groups with 15 animals included in each group. Group A and B were the control groups whereas C and D were the treatment groups. Drugs were delivered by oral gavage twice a day with the daily dosage calculated according to body surface area conversion to the human equivalent dosing regimen of 1200 mg/day. Radiographic, histological, and biomechanical evaluation was performed. Results: We could not detect any statistically significant difference between the control and gabapentin treatment groups according to the comparative assessment of radiographic scores on the 15th and 30th days. Although no significant differences were found between the groups on the 15th day, histological scores were better in the control group on the 30th day. According to the results of biomechanical testing, the fractured femurs resected from the control group exhibited significantly more strength on the 30th day. Conclusions: According to the data we acquired during the present study, administration of gabapentin negatively affects the fracture healing process especially in the aspects of histological progression as well as the biomechanical strength of the callus in a rat model.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objective of this study is to investigate and evaluate the effect of Hippophae rhamnoides extract (HRE) on oropharyngeal mucositis induced in rats with methotrexate (MTX) through biochemical, gene expression, and histopathological examinations. METHODS Experimental animals were divided into a healthy group (HG), a HRE+MTX (HREM) group, HRE group (HREG), and a control group that received MTX (MTXG). The HREM and HREG groups of rats was administered 50 mg/kg HRE, while the MTXG and HG groups were given an equal volume distilled water with gavage. Then, the HREM and MTXG rat groups were given oral MTX at a dose of 5 mg/kg 1 hour after HRE and distilled water was administered. This procedure was repeated for 1 month. At the end of this period, all of the animals were sacrificed with a high dose of anesthesia. Then, the amounts of malondialdehyde (MDA) and total glutathione (tGSH) were determined in the removed oropharyngeal tissues. Interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) gene expressions were measured, and all the tissues were studied histopathologically. RESULTS The amount of MDA was significantly increased in the MTXG group compared to the HREM, HREG, and HG groups (P<0.001). MTX significantly decreased the amount of tGSH in the MTXG group compared to the HREM, HREG, and HG groups (P<0.001). In this study, there were no visible ulcers in the animal group in which the levels of MDA, IL-1β, and TNF-α were high and the level of tGSH was low. However, histopathologic examination revealed mucin pools in wide areas due to ruptured oropharynx glands, and proliferated, dilated, and congested blood vessels and dilated ductal structures in some areas. CONCLUSION HRE protected oropharyngeal oxidative damage induced by MTX. As an inexpensive and natural product, HRE has important advantages in the prevention of oropharyngeal damage induced by MTX.

Abstract
This study investigated the effect of metyrosine against ketamine-induced cardiotoxicity in rats and compared the results with the effect of metoprolol. In this study, rats were divided into groups A, B and C. In group A, we investigated the effects of a single dose of metyrosine (150 mg/kg) and metoprolol (20 mg/kg) on single dose ketamine (60 mg/kg)-induced cardiotoxicity. In group B, we investigated the effect of metyrosine and metoprolol, which were given together with ketamine for 30 days. In group C, we investigated the effect of metyrosine and metoprolol given 15 days before ketamine and 30 days together with ketamine on ketamine cardiotoxicity. By the end of this process, we evaluated the effects of the levels of oxidant-antioxidant parameters such as MDA, MPO, 8-OHGua, tGSH, and SOD in addition to CK-MB and TP I on cardiotoxicity in rat heart tissue. The experimental results show that metyrosine prevented ketamine cardiotoxicity in groups A, B and C and metoprolol prevented it in only group C.

Abstract
Intestinal mucositis is one of the major problems in the patients receiving cancer treatment. Nimesulide is a drug with antioxidant, antiinflammatory and antiulcer features. We aimed to investigate the effect of nimesulide on the small intestine mucositis induced by methotrexate (MTX) in rats. Experimental animals were divided into the control group, MTX group (MTXG) and nimesulide+MTX administered group (NMTXG) with eight rats per group. The control and MTXG groups were given distilled water by gavage and the NMTXG was given nimesulide 100 mg/kg orally. After one hour, the NMTXG and MTXG rat groups were administered oral MTX 5 mg/kg. This procedure was repeated once a day for 15 days and the rats were sacrificed. The duodenum and jejunum of each rat was removed for the assessment of biochemical markers and histopathological evaluation. Malondialdehyde (MDA) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) levels were significantly higher in the duodenal and jejunal tissues of the animals which received MTX, compared to the control and NMTXG (P<0.001). Also, the levels of total glutathione (tGSH), glutathione reductase (GSHRd), glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx), catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were significantly lower in the MTXG (P<0.001) compared to other groups. MTX led to villus and crypt epithelial damage and inflammation containing marked PMNL and eosinophils in the intestinal tissues histopathologically. Whereas, there was only mild irregularities in the villus structures of the NMTXG. Nimesulide protected the small intestines against damage by MTX. Intestinal mucositis caused by MTX may be preventable by co-administered nimesulide.

Abstract
Objectives: In this study, we investigated the effect of metamizole on ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury an analysis of biochemistry, molecular gene expression, and histopathology in the rat ovary of female albino Wistar rats. Materials and Methods: Animals were divided into four groups; control group with induced ischemia-reperfusion (IRC), ischemia-reperfusion +100 mg/kg metamizole sodium (MS) (IRM-100), ischemia-reperfusion +200 mg/kg MS (IRM-200), and healthy group applied sham operation (SG). Results: Myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity and gene expression increased significantly in IRC and IRM-100 group rat ovarian tissue compared with the SG group (P < 0.0001). However, MPO activity and gene expression in IRM-200 group ovarian tissue decreased significantly compared with the IRC and IRM-100 groups (P < 0.0001). Histopathologically, pronounced congestion, dilated vessels, hemorrhage, edema, degenerative cells, and neutrophil migration and adhesion to the endothelium were observed in the IRC and IRM-100 group ovarian tissues. A small number of congested dilated vessels, mild congestion, and edema were observed in the IRM-200 group, but no neutrophil migration and adhesion to the endothelium or degenerative cells. Conclusions: At 200 mg/kg dose metamizole prevented ovarian injury induced with I/R. This data show that metamizole can be used in the ovarian I/R injury treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to assess the impact of resveratrol (RST) on oxidative stress induced by methotrexate in rat ileum tissue. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-four rats were divided into 4 groups with 6 in each group. Each rat was orally administered the following every day for 30 days: group 1 (MTXG), methotrexate (MTX; 5 mg/kg); group 2 (RMTXG), MTX (5 mg/kg) plus RST (25 mg/kg/day); group 3 (RSTG), RST alone (25 mg/kg/day), and group 4 (controls), distilled water. After the rats had been sacrified, the ilea were removed for the assessment of malondialdehyde (MDA), total glutathione (tGSH) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px). Gene expression analyses for interleukin-1β (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) were also performed. Hematoxylin and eosin-stained paraffin-embedded sections of the ileum were analyzed under a light microscope and the findings were recorded. Statistical analyses of the data were performed using one-way ANOVA. RESULTS The administration of MTX in group 1 yielded a higher level of MDA (8.33 ± 2.5 μmol/g protein, p < 0.001) and lower levels of tGSH (0.97 ± 0.29 nmol/g protein) and GSH-Px (5.22 ± 0.35 U/g protein, p < 0.001) compared to the other groups. MTX also increased IL-1β (40.33 ± 5.43 gene expression levels), TNF-α (6.08 ± 0.59) and MPO gene expression (9 ± 1.41) in group 1 compared to the controls (11.33 ± 2.07, 2.15 ± 0.33 and 3.43 ± 0.48, respectively, p < 0.001). The impact of RST on IL-1β, TNF-α and MPO gene expression induced by MTX was observed as a reversal of these findings (p < 0.05). Severe inflammation, damage to the villus epithelium and crypt necrosis was observed histopathologically in the MTXG group, whereas only mild inflammation was seen in the RMTXG group. CONCLUSION In this study, ileal damage caused by MTX was inhibited by RST.

Abstract
CONTEXT Ethambutol-induced retinal oxidative damage in patients with tuberculosis is still not being adequately treated. The protective effect of thiamine pyrophosphate against oxidative damage in some tissues has been reported, but no information on the protective effects of thiamine pyrophosphate against ethambutol-induced oxidative retinal damage has been found in the medical literature. OBJECTIVE The objective is to investigate whether thiamine pyrophosphate has a protective effect against oxidative retinal damage in rats induced by ethambutol. MATERIALS AND METHODS Experimental animals divided into four groups (n = 10): the healthy group (HG), the ethambutol control group (EMB), thiamine + ethambutol group (Thi-EMB) and thiamine pyrophosphate + ethambutol group (TPP-EMB). The rats in the TPP-EMB and Thi-EMB groups were administered thiamine pyrophosphate and thiamine, respectively, at doses of 20 mg/kg intraperitoneally. Distilled water was administered intraperitoneally to the HG and the EMB groups as a solvent in the same volumes. One hour after drug injection, 30 mg/kg ethambutol was administered via an oral gavage to the TPP-EMB, Thi-EMB and EMB groups. This procedure was repeated once a day for 90 days. At the end of this period, all rats were euthanized under high-dose thiopental sodium anesthesia, and biochemical and histopathological investigations of the retinal tissue were performed. RESULTS Malondialdehyde (MDA) and DNA damage product 8-hydroxyguanine levels were significantly lower in the retinal tissue of TPP-EMB and HG groups compared to those of the Thi-EMB and EMB groups, and total glutathione (tGSH) was also found to be higher. In addition, severe retinal tissue vascularization, edema and loss of ganglion cells were observed in the Thi-EMB and EMB groups, whereas histopathological findings for the TPP-EMB group were observed to be close to normal. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION These findings suggest that thiamine pyrophosphate protects retinal tissues from ethambutol-induced oxidative damage, and thiamine does not. This positive effect of thiamine pyrophosphate may be useful in the prevention of ocular toxicity that occurs during ethambutol use.

Abstract
It is known that ketamine increases the production of catecholamines, causing oxidative damage to the heart. Suppression of the production of catecholamines by disulfiram, a drug with antioxidant properties, indicates that disulfiram may decrease ketamine-induced cardiotoxicity. The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of disulfiram on ketamine-induced cardiotoxicity in rats. Disulfiram was administered by oral gavage in doses of 25 mg/kg to rats in the DK-25 group and 50 mg/kg to rats in the DK-50 group. Distilled water was applied in the ketamine control (KC) and healthy (HG) rat groups. At one hour after drug administration and subsequently at ten-minute intervals, a 60 mg/kg dose of ketamine was intraperitoneally injected in the rats in all groups other than HG, and anesthesia was maintained for three hours. Disulfiram prevented both increase in the levels of parameters indicating oxidative and myocardial damage and decrease of antioxidant levels in the heart tissue with ketamine in a dose-dependent manner. Disulfiram better prevented occurrence of cardiotoxicity with ketamine in the 50 mg/kg dose than in the 25 mg/kg dose. It is concluded that disulfiram may usefully be applied in clinical practice in the prevention of cardiotoxicity as observed during anesthesia with ketamine.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of etoricoxib on oxidative injury induced with ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) in rat kidney tissue in terms of biochemistry and immunohistochemistry. Male Albino Wistar rats were divided into renal I/R (RIR), 50 mg/kg etoricoxib+RIR (ETO-50), 100 mg/kg etoricoxib+RIR (ETO-100) and sham operation (SG) groups. Animals in the ETO-50 and ETO-100 groups were given etoricoxib by the oral route at dosages of 50 and 100 mg/kg, respectively. The RIR and SG groups were given distilled water as solvent. One hour after drug administration, 1h of ischemia and 3h of reperfusion were applied to the left kidneys of all rats (apart from SG) under 25 mg/kg thiopental sodium anesthesia. At the end of that time, kidneys were extracted and biochemical and immunohistochemical analyses were performed. Etoricoxib reduced, in a dose-dependent manner, levels of MDA, MPO and COX-2 that normally rise with I/R in rat kidney tissues. Etorixicob did not alter COX-1 activity at 50 and 100 mg/kg doses, but significantly prevented loss of tGSH in tissues with I/R. In addition, Bcl-2' gene expression inhibited with I/R was prevented in renal tubular and glomerular cells. Furthermore, etoricoxib significantly decreased the caspase-3 gene expression which increased with I/R. Etoricoxib significantly prevented I/R injury in a dose-dependent manner. The results of this study show that etoricoxib treatment could decrease kidney injury during IR.

Abstract
This study investigated whether or not the anesthetic effect of ketamine in rats is dependent on adrenal gland hormones. The study was performed on two main rat groups, intact and adrenalectomized. Rat were divided into subgroups and given appropriate doses of ketamine, metyrapone or metyrosine. Durations of anesthesia in the groups were then recorded. Endogenous catecholamine levels were measured in samples taken from peripheral blood. This experimental results showed that ketamine did not induce anesthesia in intact rats at doses of 15 or 30mg/kg, and that at 60mg/kg anesthesia was established for only 11min. However, ketamine induced significant anesthesia even at a dose of 30mg/kg in animals in which production of endogenous catecholamine (adrenalin, noradrenalin dopamine) was inhibited with metyrosine at a level of 45-47%. Ketamine at 60mg/kg in animals in which endogenous catecholamine was inhibited at a level of 45-47% established anesthesia for 47.6min. However, ketamine at 30 and 60mg/kg induced longer anesthesia in adrenalectomized rats with higher noradrenalin and dopamine levels but suppressed adrenalin production. Adrenalin plays an important role in the control of duration of ketamine anesthesia, while noradrenalin, dopamine and corticosterone have no such function. If endogenous adrenalin is suppressed, ketamine can even provide sufficient anesthesia at a 2-fold lower dose. This makes it possible for ketamine to be used in lengthy surgical procedures.

Abstract
Objectives: The biochemical effects of thiamine pyrophosphate on ischemia-reperfusion (IR) induced oxidative damage and DNA mutation in rat kidney tissue were investigated, and compared to thiamine. Materials and Methods: Rats were divided into four groups: Renal ischemia-reperfusion (RIR); thiamine pyrophosphate + RIR (TPRIR); thiamine + RIR (TRIR); and sham group (SG). Results: The results of biochemical experiments have shown that malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in rat kidney tissue after TRIR and TPRIR treatment were 7.2 ± 0.5 (P > 0.05) and 3.3 ± 0.3 (P < 0.0001) μmol/g protein, respectively. The MDA levels in the SG rat kidney tissue and in RIR group were 3.6 ± 0.2 (P < 0.0001) and 7.6 ± 0.6 μmol/g protein, respectively. Total glutathione (tGSH) levels in TRIR, TPRIR, SG, and RIR animal groups were 2.2 ± 0.3 (P > 0.05), 5.8 ± 0.4 (P < 0.0001), 6.2 ± 0.2 (P < 0.0001), and 1.7 ± 0.2 nmol/g protein, respectively. In the TRIR, TPRIR, SG, and RIR animal groups; 8-hydroxyguanine (8-OHGua)/Gua levels, which indicate mutagenic DNA, were 1.75 ± 0.12 (P > 0.05), 0.93 ± 0.1 (P < 0.0001), 0.85 ± 0.08 (P < 0.0001), and 1.93 ± 0.24 pmol/L, respectively. Conclusions: It has been shown that thiamine pyrophosphate prevents increase in mutagenic DNA in IR induced oxidative damage, whereas thiamine does not have this effect.

Abstract
Background Oxidative liver injury occurring with methotrexate restricts its use in the desired dose. Therefore, whether or not thiamine and thiamine pyrophosphate, whose antioxidant activity is known, have protective effects on oxidative liver injury generated with methotrexate was comparatively researched in rats using biochemical and histopathological approaches. Material/Methods Thiamine pyrophosphate+methotrexate, thiamine+methotrexate, and methotrexate were injected intraperitoneally in rats for 7 days. After this period, all animals’ livers were excised, killing them with high-dose anesthesia, and histopathologic and biochemical investigations were made. Result Biochemical results demonstrated a significant elevation in level of oxidant parameters such as MDA and MPO, and a reduction in antioxidant parameters such as GSH and SOD in the liver tissue of the methotrexate group. Also, the quantity of 8-OHdG/dG, a DNA injury product, was higher in the methotrexate group with high oxidant levels and low antioxidant levels, and the quantity of 8-OHdG/dG was in the thiamine pyrophosphate group with low oxidant levels and high antioxidant levels. In the thiamine and control groups, the 8-OHdG/dG rate was 1.48±0.35 pmol/L (P>0.05) and 0.55±0.1 pmol/L (P<0.0001). Thiamine pyrophosphate significantly decreased blood AST, ALT and LDH, but methotrexate and thiamine did not decrease the blood levels of AST, ALT and LDH. Histopathologically, although centrilobular necrosis, apoptotic bodies and inflammation were monitored in the methotrexate group, the findings in the thiamine pyrophosphate group were almost the same as in the control group. Conclusions Thiamine pyrophosphate was found to be effective in methotrexate hepatotoxicity, but thiamine was ineffective.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In this study, anticancer effects of mirtazapine on rats were investigated in an adenocarcinoma model induced by N-methyl-N-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG) and compared with those of cisplatin. MATERIALS AND METHODS For this purpose, 10 mg/kg doses of mirtazapine were administered orally to one group of rats, while 1 mg/kg doses of cisplatin were administered intraperitoneally to another group. At 1 hour after administration, 200 mg/kg doses of MNNG were given orally to both groups. MNNG administration was repeated once every 10 days through 3 months, after which period, gastric tissue was taken and pathologically evaluated. RESULTS Mirtazapine prevented adenocarcinoma induction by MNNG in rats to a greater extent than cisplatin. Some of the rats receiving cisplatin demonstrated severe dysplasia in gastric samples and others exhibited mild dysplasia. Rats given mirtazapine were not observed to suffer severe dysplasia, only mild dysplasia being observed. CONCLUSION For adenocarcinoma induced by MNNG on rats, mirtazapine was determined more effective than cisplatin. In order to make statement about mechanism of anticancer activity of mirtazapine, wider studies are required.

Abstract
BACKGROUND So far the authors could not find any published paper that shows the presence of a possibly significant relationship between oxidant/antioxidant parameters and time of death. OBJECTIVES This study sought to investigate whether the differences between the levels of endogenous parameters like Superoxide dismutase (SOD), Malondialdehyde (MDA), Glutathione peroxidase (GPx), Glutathione S-transferases (GST), Total glutathione (tGSH), Catalase (CAT) and Nitric oxide (NO) have a relationship with the early postmortem interval (EPI). MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 60 Albino Wistar male rats weighing between 220-230 grams were obtained. The rats were divided into six subgroups (n = 10), fed at room temperature (220C) and then decapitated. The livers of the dead rats were extracted at intervals of one hour and biochemical examinations were performed and biochemical results obtained from the animal groups had been evaluated. RESULTS The authors performed linear regression analysis in order to search for factors predicting the time of death. The time of death was taken as a dependent variable with SOD, MDA, GPx, GST, GSH, CAT, and NO as independent variables. This model resulted with a high predictive value (adjusted R square = 94.0%). SOD, GST and NO were found to be significant factors independently affecting the prediction of the death time. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, the results obtained from the experiment showed that the oxidant and antioxidant parameters are important for estimating the EPI.
