Abstract
In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the effect of ethanol extract of Annona Muricata (AM) leaves in the prevention of brain damage caused by ionizing radiation (IR). This study was conducted in the Experimental Animal Research Unit of a university with 28 adults female Wistar Albino rats. The experimental groups were as follows: Control group (n = 8), AM group (n = 6), IR group (n = 8), AM + IR group (n = 6). In the IR group, astrocyte hypertrophy, microglial reaction and inflammatory reaction levels were significantly higher than the control and AM groups (P < 0.001). Edema was significantly higher in the IR group compared to the control group (P=0.001). The MDA of the IR group was significantly higher compared to the control group and AM group (P=0.031, P=0.006, respectively). The MDA of the AM + IR group was significantly higher than the AM group (P=0.039). Our findings show that histomorphology and oxidant damage caused by IR can be ameliorated using AM, as demonstrated by the comparison of the controls to AM + IR recipients, which showed similar histomorphology and oxidant damage levels.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES While the positive correlation was shown in a few studies which investigated the relationship between obesity and pentraxin-3 (PTX-3) levels, different findings were obtained in other studies. We aimed to determine PTX-3 levels in obese and healthy children, and their relationship with Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) criteria. METHODS 105 children and adolescents were considered as the study population. Participants were divided into three groups; obese and MetS (OM+), obese and non-MetS (OM-) and the control group. Fasting glucose, blood lipids and PTX-3 levels were measured. Ultrasonography was performed to detect hepatic steatosis. MetS and hepatic steatosis were investigated by dividing the patients into two groups according to PTX-3 levels. RESULTS The study population consisted of 37 patients with OM+; 35 patients with OM- and 33 healthy children. OM+ patients had higher fasting insulin (p<0.001), homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (p<0.001), triglyceride (p<0.001) and lower high-density lipoprotein (p=0.001). The PTX-3 level was higher in the OM+ group compared to both OM- group and the control group (p=0.002). When two groups were generated according to PTX-3 level, a higher frequency of MetS was detected in the high PTX 3 group than in all three major MetS diagnostic criteria groups. Moreover, there was more hepatic steatosis in the high PTX-3 group independent from obesity and MetS. CONCLUSIONS Higher PTX-3 levels were present in children and adolescent obese patients with MetS.

Abstract
Introduction Blood samples having inappropriate volume are a substantial part of preanalytical errors. Inadequate sample volume for glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) test may be a common problem of patients with diabetes mellitus having vascular changes. In this study, we compared HbA1c concentrations of underfilled and appropriately filled blood collection tubes. Materials and methods To compare HbA1c concentrations, blood samples were collected into 2 mL tubes containing K3-EDTA from 109 subjects. Two blood samples (underfilled and appropriately filled) were drawn from a patient by the same personnel and materials. HbA1c measurements were assayed on a Cobas 6000 analyser module c 501 (Roche Diagnostics, Mannheim, Germany). The HbA1c% results were compared by t-test and Wilcoxon's signed-rank statistical methods (SPSS Inc., Chicago, USA). Bias analysis was performed using Microsoft Excel 4.0. Results Underfilled samples were classified three groups (group 1, N = 44; group 2, N = 36; and group 3, N = 29) according to the filling ratio of the samples; 0.5 mL and below (< 25%), 0.5-1.0 mL (25-50%), and 1.0-2.0 mL (> 50%), respectively. When we compared underfilled tubes with pairing filled tubes, there was a statistically significant difference only with tubes filled less than 25% (P = 0.030). Furthermore, we have done bias analysis between paired tubes according to the diagnostic cut-off value of 6.5%. The bias was more prominent in up to 50% underfilled blood tubes (1.1%), when HbA1c concentrations were below the diagnostic cut-off of 6.5%. Conclusions We suggest that the blood tubes with EDTA for HbA1c measurement should be filled with at least 50% to avoid clinical variations.

Abstract
Abstract
We report the radioprotective attitude of Annona muricata (AM) leaf extract as antioxidant material to prevent cellular damage in the ileum tissue. The protective effects of an ethyl acetate extract of AM leaves are comprehensively investigated against radiation-induced ileal damage in numerous rats. Thirty-two adult female rats were separated into 4 groups (3 intervention groups and 1 control) as follows: controls received 0.01 mL/kg distilled water, the AM group received 300 mg/kg AM leaf extract, the ionizing radiation (IR) group received a single dose of whole body radiation (8.3 Gy) after 0.01 mL/kg saline treatment, and the AM + IR group received 300 mg/kg AM leaf extract treatment and were subjected to whole body radiation (8.3 Gy) 1 h after the last gavage. All treatments are administered by oral gavage once a day for 9 days. At the end of the experiment, biochemical total oxidant status (TOS, interleukin-6, and caspase) and histological examinations are performed on blood samples as well as ileum tissue. TOS levels are found to be significantly high in rats, which received irradiation, and those in the AM group when compared to controls. These findings suggest that AM has radioprotective effects on ileum tissue, likely because of its antioxidative properties. The findings of this research may contribute to the minimizing of major side effects induced by excessive radiation exposure in patients undergoing radiotherapy and may serve as a significant impetus for further assessments. However, future studies are highly recommended to confirm safety and to determine extraction technique and dosage before human use can be considered.

Objectives
This study investigates the effect of Annona muricata (AM) leaf extract against irradiation-induced damage by the evaluation of hepatic tissue and the levels of oxidative and inflammatory stress in the circulation.
Methods
An experimental study with 37 female Wistar albino rats randomized into four groups (controls and three intervention groups) was performed. The first interventional group (group 2) received 300 mg/kg of AM leaf extract by oral gavage once a day for 9 days, group 3 received a single dose of whole-body radiation (8.3 Gy) after a 9-day oral gavage treatment with saline, and the last group received the same irradiation of 8.3 Gy after being treated with 300 mg/kg of AM leaf extract by oral gavage once a day for 9 days.
Results
Radiation was found to elevate reactive oxygen species parameters, and AM administration before irradiation was found to decrease total oxidant status (TOS), increase caspase 9, and improve hepatic damage when compared with the group that received only irradiation.
Conclusion
The damage caused by irradiation may be ameliorated by the use of the AM extract, which appears to be effective in preventing oxidative stress and inflammatory activity.

Abstract
Background This research aims to compare fibrinogen results, obtained from the Clauss and PT-derived method on the Cobas t511 analyzer, in patients with specific categories of disease. A second aim was to determine the reference range for these 2 methods. Methods We retrospectively compared fibrinogen concentrations of 914 patients obtained by the Clauss and PT-derived methods on the Cobas t511 coagulation analyzer from the laboratory information system. Fibrinogen data was segregated into a healthy outpatient population and those populations with possible fibrinogen abnormalities including pregnancy, chronic illness, liver disease, heart and vascular diseases, and clinical suspicion of COVID-19. All data were analyzed using Passing–Bablok regression and Bland–Altman analysis. Reference ranges were determined from fibrinogen results of the healthy outpatient population who presented for a clinic check-up. Results All fibrinogen results were grouped and compared according to fibrinogen values (low, normal, and high), international normalized ratio (INR) values (<1.2, 1.2–2.0, and >2.0), and diagnosis. There were statistically significant positive correlations in all groups (P < 0.05), except for low fibrinogen values (P = 0.96). Results with INR value <1.2 had the highest correlation between 2 methods. Conclusion The PT-derived method can be used alone in the Cobas t511 analyzer, especially in patients with an INR <1.2. Reported new reference ranges of the PT-derived method could help to determine and compare the clinical significance of fibrinogen methods. Further studies must be focused on the conditions in which PT-derived fibrinogen results should be directed to the Clauss test.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Annona muricata (AM) (graviola) is a plant that grows in tropical regions and is thought to be good for many diseases by local people. Unfortunately, there is no acceptable medical treatment for spinal cord injury (SCI) yet. In our study, we investigated the neuropeotective effects of AM leaf extract on SCI in an experimental rat model. METHODS A total of 40 Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into five equal groups (n=8). Group 1 was the control group in which only laminectomy was performed. Trauma was induced in four groups after laminectomy. Group 2 (untreated trauma group) was given no medication. In Group 3, a single intraperitoneal dose of methylprednisolone (30 mg/kg) was administered after trauma. The rats in Groups 4 received a low dose (100 mg/kg) of AM leaf extracts by oral gavage one week before trauma while the rats in Group 5 received a high-dose (300 mg/kg) of these extracts by oral gavage one week before trauma. All rats, including the control group, were sacrificed 24 h after the trauma was created. RESULTS Tissue samples taken to evaluate the neuroprotective effect were examined biochemically and histopathologically. Inflam-matory findings in the trauma group were significantly better in both groups treated with AM. There was no difference between the groups in terms of clinical motor examination and inclined plane test results. CONCLUSION Our histopathological and biochemical results showed that AM is an agent with neuroprotective effects in trau-matic SCI.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to evaluate serum G protein-coupled estrogen receptor-1 (GPER1) levels in non-pregnant and pregnant with and without gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). METHODS The study comprised 40 pregnant women with (n=20) and without GDM (n=20) and 20 healthy non-pregnant women. Data as maternal age, gestational age, and body mass index (BMI) of participants were recorded and serum samples were collected. Serum GPER1 levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. RESULTS Serum GPER1 level was significantly higher in GDM (p=0.03) and non-pregnant women (p=0.005) than those of normal pregnancy. There was no significant correlation between the serum GPER1 levels age (r=0.18, p=0.34), gestational age (r=-0.22, p=0.47), and BMI (r=0.004, p=0.975). CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that changes in serum GPER1 levels in pregnancy and GDM may be associated with estrogen. More detailed studies should be conducted to monitor the changes and their interactions in serum sex hormones and serum GPER1 levels during GDM.

Clinical periodontal parameters including probing pocket depth (PPD), clinical attachment level (CAL), gingival index (GI) and bleeding on probing (BOP) were assessed. GCF and serum samples were collected from each patient and were analyzed FOLR1 levels by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS The values of FOLR1 in GCF were higher in gingivitis and periodontitis groups than among patient in control group (p < 0.016). Serum FOLR1 levels showed no significant difference between the groups. A significant correlation was observed between FOLR1 levels of GCF and BOP (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Our preliminary data suggest that FOLR1 is not useful in monitoring the periodontal disease. Further studies are necessary to clarify the role, regulation and function of folate and it's receptors in the pathogenesis of periodontal disease.

Abstract
Radiation induced colitis is one the most common clinical issue for patients receiving radiotherapy. For this reason, we aimed to investigate the effect of antioxidant-effective flavonoids hesperidin and quercetin on the intestinal damage induced by radiation in this study. TNF-alpha, interleukin-10 (IL-10), heat shock protein 70 (HSP 70) and caspase 3, 8, 9 markers of apoptotic pathways were measured in the colon tissues of irradiated acute intestinal damage by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Irradiation of rats caused a significance increase of TNF-alpha, caspase 3/8/9 and decrease of IL-10 concentrations. Hesperidin and quercetin treatment resulted in decreased levels of TNF-alpha and increased levels of IL-10. Quercetin significantly decreased caspase 3/8/9 levels. Hesperidin produced a decreased of caspase 3/8/9 levels compared with irradiation group but this was statistically not significant. Only significant alteration of HSP 70 were seen in hesperidin treated rats. Further studies are needed to elucidate the mechanism by which flavonoids induced signaling provides protection against apoptosis and inflammation.

Abstract
Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a common sleep disorder characterized by repeated episodes of apnea and hypopnea during sleep. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is the most effective method for treating OSAS and alleviating the patients' symptoms. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of 3-month CPAP therapy on serum levels of IL-23 in patients with OSAS. Twenty-three patients with newly diagnosed moderate-to-severe OSAS who had not yet started nasal CPAP treatment were prospectively enrolled. All of the subjects underwent simple spirometry and an overnight sleep study. Twenty-seven healthy individuals without OSAS were also recruited as the control group. Serum IL-23 and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were measured before and after 3 months of CPAP therapy. There was no significant difference between moderate and severe OSAS patients in IL-23 and CRP, but both parameters were significantly higher than control group. The CPAP treatment produced a significant decrease in the levels of the inflammatory mediators CRP and IL-23 in patients. Changes in IL-23 were positively correlated with changes in AHI and in CRP. In conclusion, based on these results, serum IL-23 levels reflect OSAS-related systemic inflammation and are a useful marker for improvement in OSAS following CPAP therapy.

Abstract
Background/Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and prolidase levels in subjects with different periodontal status. Material and Methods: Fifteen periodontitis, fifteen gingivitis and fifteen healthy subject were included. GCF samples were collected from participants. Probing depth, clinical attachment level, gingival index was recorded. ALP and prolidase levels were determined in GCF by spectrophotometrically. Results: Higher values of ALP were found in periodontitis compared with gingivitis and healthy control (p<0.001). The values of prolidase were lower in periodontitis than healthy control (p<0.05). A statistically significant positive correlation was found between clinical parameters and ALP levels (p<0.001). There is no significant correlation between clinical parameters and prolidase levels (p>0.05). Additionally, no significant correlation was detected between ALP and prolidase (r= -0.309, p>0.05). Conclusion: Our preliminary data suggest that low prolidase level in periodontitis was not associated with ALP and clinical parameters, which represent periodontal destruction and inflammation.

Abstract
AIM: To determine the predictive value of increased prolidase activity that reflects increased collagen turnover in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
METHODS: Sixty-eight patients with HCC (mean age of 69.1 ± 10.1), 31 cirrhosis patients (mean age of 59.3 ± 6.3) and 33 healthy volunteers (mean age of 51.4 ± 12.6) were enrolled in this study. Univariate and multivariate analysis were used to evaluate the association of serum α-fetoprotein (AFP) values with HCC clinicopathological features, such as tumor size, number and presence of vascular and macrovascular invasion. The patients with HCC were divided into groups according to tumor size, number and presence of vascular invasion (diameters; ≤ 3 cm, 3-5 cm and ≥ 5 cm, number; 1, 2 and ≥ 3, macrovascular invasion; yes/no). Barcelona-clinic liver cancer (BCLC) criteria were used to stage HCC patients. Serum samples for measurement of prolidase and alpha-fetoprotein levels were kept at -80 °C until use. Prolidase levels were measured spectrophotometrically and AFP concentrations were determined by a chemiluminescence immunometric commercial diagnostic assay.
RESULTS: In patients with HCC, prolidase and AFP values were evaluated according to tumor size, number, presence of macrovascular invasion and BCLC staging classification. Prolidase values were significantly higher in patients with HCC compared with controls (P < 0.001). Prolidase levels were significantly associated with tumor size and number (P < 0.001, P = 0.002, respectively). Prolidase levels also differed in patients in terms of BCLC staging classification (P < 0.001). Furthermore the prolidase levels in HCC patients showed a significant difference compared with patients with cirrhosis (P < 0.001). In HCC patients grouped according to tumor size, number and BCLC staging classification, AFP values differed separately (P = 0.032, P = 0.038, P = 0.015, respectively). In patients with HCC, there was a significant correlation (r = 0.616; P < 0.001) between prolidase and AFP values in terms of tumor size, number and BCLC staging classification, whereas the presence of macrovascular invasion did not show a positive association with serum prolidase and AFP levels.
CONCLUSION: Considering the levels of both serum prolidase and AFP could contribute to the early diagnosing of hepatocellular carcinoma.

Abstract
We aimed to determine the oxidative stress and antioxidant status in preeclamptic placenta. Also, we investigated the apoptotic index of villous trophoblast and proliferation index of cytotrophoblasts. The study included 32 pregnant with preeclampsia and 31 normotensive healthy pregnant women. Malondialdehyde (MDA) and total antioxidant status (TAS) levels were measured in the placenta. For detection of apoptosis and proliferation in trophoblast, apoptosis protease activating factor 1 (APAF-1) and Ki-67 were used. Placental MDA levels in preeclamptic women were significantly higher than normal pregnancies (p=0.002). There was no significant difference between the groups in the TAS levels of placenta (p=0.773). Also, the apoptotic index in villous trophoblasts increased (p<0.001), but proliferation index did not change in preeclampsia (p=0.850). Increased oxidative stress and apoptosis in pathological placenta are not balanced by antioxidant systems and proliferation mechanisms.

Abstract
Ionizing radiation causes its biological effects mainly through oxidative damage
induced by reactive oxygen species. Previous studies showed that ozone oxidative
preconditioning attenuated pathophysiological events mediated by reactive oxygen
species. As inhalation of ozone induces lung injury, the aim of this study was
to examine whether ozone oxidative preconditioning potentiates or attenuates the
effects of irradiation on the lung. Rats were subjected to total body
irradiation, with or without treatment with ozone oxidative preconditioning
(0.72 mg/kg). Serum proinflammatory cytokine levels, oxidative damage markers,
and histopathological analysis were compared at 6 and 72 h after total body
irradiation. Irradiation significantly increased lung malondialdehyde levels as
an end-product of lipoperoxidation. Irradiation also significantly decreased
lung superoxide dismutase activity, which is an indicator of the generation of
oxidative stress and an early protective response to oxidative damage. Ozone
oxidative preconditioning plus irradiation significantly decreased
malondialdehyde levels and increased the activity of superoxide dismutase, which
might indicate protection of the lung from radiation-induced lung injury. Serum
tumor necrosis factor alpha and interleukin-1 beta levels, which increased
significantly following total body irradiation, were decreased with ozone
oxidative preconditioning. Moreover, ozone oxidative preconditioning was able to
ameliorate radiation-induced lung injury assessed by histopathological
evaluation. In conclusion, ozone oxidative preconditioning, repeated low-dose
intraperitoneal administration of ozone, did not exacerbate radiation-induced
lung injury, and, on the contrary, it provided protection against
radiation-induced lung damage.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objective of this study was to determine ischemia modified albumin (IMA) and oxidant status in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Therefore, we evaluated the IMA and oxidant status by measuring serum uric acid, albumin and gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) in AD. METHODS The plasma albumin, uric acid, GGT and IMA levels were measured by spectrophotometric methods in 32 AD patients and 32 healthy controls. The Mini Mental Status Examination and Clinical Dementia Rating Scale were used to evaluate the cognitive functions of AD patients. RESULTS AD patients had significantly higher IMA levels as compared to those of the controls respectively. Uric acid concentrations were significantly decreased and GGT values were significantly increased in AD when compared with control group. Albumin levels of the patients were also compared and no significant difference was detected. CONCLUSION Oxidative stress and IMA levels rise in AD. However, large prospective studies are required to understand the mechanisms leading to increased IMA levels during AD, whether preceded or not by AD.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate serum prolidase activity and the effects of gender, body mass index (BMI), disease severity and duration, and therapy type on prolidase activity in patients with psoriatic as well as the relationship between serum NO· and prolidase levels in these patients. The study included 29 clinically documented plaque patients with psoriasis and 24 healthy volunteers. Data such as age, sex, BMI, duration and severity of disease, and type of therapy were assessed. NO· levels were determined by the Griess reaction. Serum prolidase assay is based on a colorimetric determination of proline by Chinard's reagent. We did not determine any difference in serum NO· levels of psoriatic patients when compared to controls. Serum prolidase levels in psoriasis patients were significantly higher than those in controls. There was no significant difference in prolidase activity between male and female. No statistically significant correlations were found between serum prolidase levels and BMI, PASI and disease duration. When compared between topical treatment group and systemic treatment group, there was no significant difference in serum prolidase activity. In conclusion, patients with psoriasis exhibit higher serum prolidase activity independent of gender, BMI, disease severity or duration, type of treatments or NO· level. However, further studies are needed to verify these findings as well as altered collagen synthesis in patients with psoriasis.

Abstract
This study aimed to establish reference values for serum levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) in children. The study included samples from 4,102 healthy children (2,003 boys and 2,099 girls) ages 1-18 years. The serum levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and HDL-C were determined using the Advia 2400 autoanalyzer. The LDL-C levels were calculated using the Friedewald equation. The mean, standard deviation, and 5th, 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, 90th, and 95th percentile values of the biochemical parameters for boys and girls were detected. The total cholesterol and HDL-C levels were higher among the girls than among the boys in 15- to 18-year-old group. No significant difference was found for the other serum lipid levels among any of the age groups. This study provided pediatric reference intervals for the lipid parameters for children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to determine the normal values of serum IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 in Turkish children and adults (1-79 years). MATERIAL AND METHODS The study included 571 healthy children and 625 healthy adults from the West Black Sea region of Turkey. Serum IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 concentrations were determined using a chemiluminescent immunometric assay on an Immulite 1000 analyzer. RESULTS IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 levels tended to be higher in girls compared to boys among the children. The differences were statistically significant in puberty from age 12-14 years for IGF-1 and prepubertally from age 9-10 years for IGFBP-3. Peaks of serum IGF-1 levels were observed 2 years earlier in girls (14 years) than boys (16 years). The general pattern of IGFBP-3 was similar to IGF-1 during puberty. In adults, IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 levels decreased by age. There was no significant difference in IGF-1 and IGFBP3 values between men and women in any age group. CONCLUSIONS This study established age- and sex-specific reference values for serum IGF-1 and IGFBP-3 in healthy Turkish children and adults.

Abstract
Because radiation-induced cellular damage is attributed primarily to harmful effects of free radicals, molecules with direct free radical scavenging properties are particularly promising as radioprotectors. It has been demonstrated that controlled ozone administration may promote an adaptation to oxidative stress, preventing the damage induced by reactive oxygen species. Thus, we hypothesized that ozone would ameliorate oxidative damage caused by total body irradiation (TBI) with a single dose of 6 Gy in rat liver and ileum tissues. Rats were randomly divided into groups as follows: control group; saline-treated and irradiated (IR) groups; and ozone oxidative preconditioning (OOP) and IR groups. Animals were exposed to TBI after a 5-day intraperitoneal pretreatment with either saline or ozone (1 mg/kg/day). They were decapitated at either 6 h or 72 h after TBI. Plasma, liver and ileum samples were obtained. Serum AST, ALT and TNF-α levels were elevated in the IR groups compared with the control group and were decreased after treatment with OOP. TBI resulted in a significant increase in the levels of MDA in the liver and ileal tissues and a decrease of SOD activities. The results demonstrated that the levels of MDA liver and ileal tissues in irradiated rats that were pretreated with ozone were significantly decreased, while SOD activities were significantly increased. OOP reversed all histopathological alterations induced by irradiation. In conclusion, data obtained from this study indicated that ozone could increase the endogenous antioxidant defense mechanism in rats and there by protect the animals from radiation-induced organ toxicity.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of ghrelin on inflammatory response and tissue damage following trauma-induced acute lung injury. Thirty male wistar albino rats (300-400 g) were randomly assigned into three groups: control group (n = 6), lung contusion plus saline (saline-treated, n = 12), and lung contusion plus ghrelin (ghrelin-treated, n = 12). Saline- or ghrelin-treated traumatic rats were sacrificed at two time points (24 and 72 hours) after lung contusion. Blood was collected for the analysis of serum adenosine deaminase (ADA). Tissue transforming growth factor-beta 1 (TGF-β1) and matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and histopathological examination was performed on the lung tissue samples. Our results indicated that ghrelin significantly reduced morphologic damages. Serum ADA activities were significantly decreased after lung contusion and this decline started early with ghrelin treatment. TGF-β1 and MMP-2 levels in lung tissue were elevated at 72 hours after lung contusion and treatment with ghrelin significantly increased TGF-β1 level and reduced MMP-2 level. In conclusion, our study demonstrates that acute lung injury initiated proinflammatory responses and ghrelin administration showed an anti-inflammatory effect in lung contusion.

Previous studies reported the presence of placental PSA in normal pregnancy but no study has been done in preeclampsia. The aim of this study was to investigate PSA content in preeclampsia. Preeclampsia was diagnosed according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists criteria. Placentas were obtained from 33 preeclamptic and 34 normotensive women. Placenta samples were homogenized and the supernatants were immediately analyzed. The tissue PSA content was measured by Immulite 2000 PSA assay. The data were analyzed with Student's t-test and Pearson correlation test. There was a significant difference in placental PSA content between preeclamptic and normotensive women. Placental content of PSA was higher in the preeclamptic group with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) than in the preeclamptic and normotensive pregnant without IUGR groups. No significant difference was found in this respect between preeclamptic and normotensive women without IUGR. In conclusion, we found that placental PSA content is elevated in preeclampsia and negatively correlated with infant birth weight. Further studies will be necessary to define the roles of PSA more precisely and to examine its effects on the pathophysiology of preeclampsia.

Abstract
Macroprolactinemia is often a cause of misdiagnosis, unnecessary expensive investigation, and unsuitable treatment. The aim of the present study was to investigate the clinical findings and the concentrations of macroprolactin in patients with hyperprolactinemia in our region. Eighty-four female hyperprolactinemic patients were screened for macroprolactinemia. Prolactin was measured by chemiluminescence method on an Immulite 2000 analyzer (Siemens Health Diagnostics, Deerfield, IL, USA). Recoveries less than or equal to 40% after polyethylene glycol precipitation were indicative of macroprolactinemia. Clinical features and biochemical values were compared in true hyperprolactinemic and macroprolactinemic patients. Macroprolactinemia was detected in 31 patients (36.9%), with 84 hyperprolactinemic female patients. There was no difference in frequency of galactorrhea and oligomenorrhea/amenorrhea between the two groups. When we evaluated the clinical features of patients according to prolactin levels, no significant difference was found between the groups. In conclusion, our initial data show that no clinical features could reliably differentiate macroprolactinemic from true hyperprolactinemic patients, but at least one of these symptoms was present in most macroprolactinemic patients.

Abstract
The aim of the current study was to evaluate the effects of high carbohydrate or fat diets, fed for 15 days at the end of breeding season, on leptin, GH and LH secretions in prepubertal fat-tailed Tuj lambs. For that purpose, 9-month-old ram-lambs were divided into three groups as control group (fed with basal ration, n = 4), high carbohydrate (HC) group, basal ration plus barley, n = 4), or high fat (HF) group (basal ration plus by-pass fat, n = 4). For the measurement of leptin and GH, blood plasma samples were collected on days 1, 4, 9 and 14 of the experiment. For the measurement of LH pulse frequency, serial blood samples were collected every 15 min for 6 h on day 14. Lambs were weighed and body condition scored (BCS) on days 1 and 15. Body weight and BCS increased towards the end of the study (p < 0.05). The BCS was higher in high energy groups at the end of the experiment (p < 0.05). Diet affected plasma leptin concentrations (p = 0.002) but time did not. The GH concentrations were not affected by diet or time. The LH pulse frequency appeared to be higher in HC and HF groups but there were no statistical difference between the groups. There was a significant positive relationship between overall BCS and corresponding leptin concentrations (R2 = 0.263; p = 0.010) and between LH pulse frequency and leptin concentrations (R2 = 0.594; p = 0.003). In conclusion, the present study suggests that rather than type of energy, amount of energy intake and body energy reserves are much important regulators of plasma leptin concentrations and LH pulse frequency in fat-tailed Tuj lambs.
