Abstract
BACKGROUND One of the greatest challenges in the diagnosis of acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI) is the lack of specific laboratory tests that support multidetector computed tomography (CT). Our aim is to investigate the diagnostic value of electrocardiographic QT parameters in AMI and their relationship with CT findings. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients who were admitted to the emergency department with abdominal pain were recruited retrospectively from the hospital information system. Grouping was carried out on the basis of AMI (n=78) and non-AMI (n=78). In both groups, the corrected QT (QTc) and QT dispersion (QTD) were measured on electrocardiographs, and the qualitative and quantitative CT findings were evaluated on CT examinations. RESULTS The QTc and QTD values were higher in the AMI group. The median QTc values were 456.16 (IQR: 422.88-483.16) for the AMI group and 388.83 (IQR: 359.74-415.83) for the control group (p<0.001), and the median QTD values were 58 (IQR: 50.3-68.25) for the AMI group and 46 (IQR: 42-50) for the control group (p<0.001). In the CT analysis, the QTc values were significantly higher among AMI patients, with images of paper-thin bowel walls and the absence of bowel wall enhancement (p=0.042 and p=0.042, respectively). Meanwhile, the QTD values were significantly higher among patients with venous pneumatosis findings on CT (p=0.005). In the regression analysis, a significant relationship was found between the QT parameters and AMI (p<0.001). For QTc, an AUC of 0.903 (95% CI: 0.857-0.950, p<0.001), a sensitivity of 80.8%, and a specificity of 82.3% were found. For QTD, an AUC of 0.821 (95% CI: 0.753-0.889, p<0.001), a sensitivity of 73.1%, and a specificity of 82.3% were found. CONCLUSION We found the QTc and QTD values to be significantly higher among AMI patients. Furthermore, we found a significant relationship between the CT findings and QTc and QTD and a significant relationship between survival and QTc in the AMI group.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the frequency of abdominal computed tomography (CT) findings in patients with coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) and interrogate the relationship between abdominal CT findings and patient demographic features, clinical findings, and laboratory test results as well as the CT atherosclerosis score in the abdominal aorta. METHODS This study was designed as a multicenter retrospective study. The abdominal CT findings of 1.181 patients with positive abdominal symptoms from 26 tertiary medical centers with a positive polymerase chain-reaction test for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 were reviewed. The frequency of ischemic and non-ischemic CT findings as well as the association between CT findings, clinical features, and abdominal aortic calcific atherosclerosis score (AA-CAS) were recorded. RESULTS Ischemic and non-ischemic abdominal CT findings were detected in 240 (20.3%) and 328 (27.7%) patients, respectively. In 147 patients (12.4%), intra-abdominal malignancy was present. The most frequent ischemic abdominal CT findings were bowel wall thickening (n = 120; 10.2%) and perivascular infiltration (n = 40; 3.4%). As for non-ischemic findings, colitis (n = 91; 7.7%) and small bowel inflammation (n = 73; 6.2%) constituted the most frequent disease processes. The duration of hospital stay was found to be higher in patients with abdominal CT findings than in patients without any positive findings (13.8 ± 13 vs. 10.4 ± 12.8 days, P < 0.001). The frequency of abdominal CT findings was significantly higher in patients who did not survive the infection than in patients who were discharged after recovery (41.7% vs. 27.4%, P < 0.001). Increased AA-CAS was found to be associated with a higher risk of ischemic conditions in abdominal CT examinations. CONCLUSION Abdominal symptoms in patients with COVID-19 are usually associated with positive CT findings. The presence of ischemic findings on CT correlates with poor COVID-19 outcomes. A high AA-CAS is associated with abdominal ischemic findings in patients with COVID-19.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We evaluated carotid artery stiffness in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) using acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) elastography and investigated the relationship between stiffness and CAD. METHODS This study examined 76 CAD patients (aged 60.7 ± 11) and 70 healthy individuals (aged 59.6 ± 9). The left common carotid artery mean shear wave velocity (LCmeanSWV) and the right common carotid artery mean shear wave velocity (RCmeanSWV) of the anterior walls were measured using ARFI elastography, and the results of the patient group and the healthy group were compared. The common carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) was measured in both groups and compared with mean SWV. RESULTS The RCmeanSWVs in the patient and healthy groups were 3.47 ± 1 m/s and 2.69 ± 0.90 m/s, respectively (p < 0.001). The LCmeanSWVs in the patient and healthy groups were 3.60 ± 0.9 m/s and 2.90 ± 0.80 m/s, respectively (p < 0.001). A significant correlation was found between the RCmeanSWV and the right CIMT values and between the LCmeanSWV and the left CIMT values (r = 0.231, p = 0.03 and r = 0.331, p = 0.002, respectively). CONCLUSIONS The mean SWV values of carotid arteries of CAD patients measured with ARFI elastography were significantly higher than the mean SWV values of the carotid arteries of healthy individuals. Thus, measurement of the carotid artery SWV could be a potential tool in the risk evaluation of cardiovascular disease. Nonetheless, new studies are required to determine whether this method serves as a useful additional tool.

Abstract
Background Renal insufficiency may occur in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) is a method for quantifying tissue elasticity, which could be used as an additional diagnostic test for renal insufficiency and provide an additional contribution to the determination of CAD. Purpose To evaluate ARFI elastography with shear wave velocity (SWV) measurements in the diagnosis of mild-to-moderate chronic kidney disease (CKD) in CAD patients, and to analyze the relationship between the severity of CAD assessed by the Gensini scoring system and kidney stiffness. Material and Methods The study included 76 CAD patients and 79 healthy volunteers. SWV was measured for each kidney in the both groups. The CAD group was divided into two subgroups based on Gensini score: mild CAD and severe CAD. SWV values of the CAD patients were compared to those of the healthy volunteers; values of subgroups were also compared with each other. Results The patient group had significantly lower renal mean SWV values than those of the healthy group (1.87 ± 0.58 vs. 2.34 ± 0.38, P < 0.01). The SWV value decreased as the eGFR level decreased. Mean SWV values for kidneys of the patients with severe CAD were lower than those of the mild CAD patients (1.64 ± 0.39 vs. 2.42 ± 0.60, P < 0.01). Conclusion renal mean SWV values of CAD patients decreased in proportion to the reduction in eGFR, and the SWV values decreased as the severity of CAD increased. ARFI elastography is a novel technique for diagnosing CKD and defining illness severity in CAD patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE To demonstrate the difference in tissue stiffness by comparing the value of the shear wave velocity (SWV) of postoperative undescended testicles with that of normal testes. METHODS This study included 39 patients and 30 healthy controls. US and p-SWE (VTQ) were performed using with a linear probe (4-9MHz). Forty-seven operated undescended testicles comprised "Group A", 27 testes with normal scrotal placement since birth in patient population comprised "Group B". A total of 60 testes in 30 healthy controls were included as "Group C". Finally, the testes of Group A, B, C were statistically compared in terms of the SWV and volume. RESULTS The shear wave values of the 47 testes in Group A were 0.75-2.8 (median, 1.1)m/s, and the SWVs of the 27 testes in Group B were 0.62-1.2 (median, 0.84)m/s. The SWVs of the 60 testes in Group C were 0.65-1 (median, 0.82)m/s. The testicular volumes of Group A ranged from 0.19 to 4.7 (median, 0.15)cm(3), Group B ranged from 0.34 to 8 (median, 0.74)cm(3) and Group C ranged as 0.4-15.5 (median, 0.91)cm(3). CONCLUSIONS VTQ method of p-SWE is a new method that may reveal the difference in stiffness between scrotally placed testes and postoperative undescended testicles.

Abstract
Background The aim of this study was to investigate the potential contribution of acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) elastography to the determination of the severity of benign prostate hypertrophy (BPH) by performing shear wave velocity (SWV) measurements of the prostate using ARFI technology. Material/Methods Sixty BPH patients and 40 healthy volunteers were included in this study. SWV measurements of the prostate were performed by transabdominal ultrasonography (US), both in the BPH patients and control subjects. The BPH patients also underwent uroflowmetry measurements. Using the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), the BPH patients were divided into two subgroups, a mild-to-moderate BPH group and a severe BPH group, to compare SWV values. Results The BPH patients had higher SWV values for the central area of the prostate compared to the control subjects (2.52±0.59 m/s and 1.47±0.42 m/s, p<0.01). The SWV values of the central area of prostate were higher in the severe BPH group compared to the mild-to-moderate BPH group (2.62±0.58 and 2.25±0.55, p=0.02). Conclusions Our ARFI elastography results indicated that the central prostate SWV values of BPH patients were significantly higher relative to those of a healthy control group. The central prostate SWV values increased in proportion to the increased severity of BPH. Measurement of SWV by ARFI technology constitutes a non-invasive alternative to other methods for the determination of BPH severity.

Abstract
PURPOSE Differentiation of idiopathic granulomatous mastitis (IGM) from carcinoma with routine imaging methods, such as ultrasonography (US) and mammography, is difficult. Therefore, we evaluated the value of a newly developed noninvasive technique called acoustic radiation force impulse imaging in differentiating IGM versus malignant lesions in the breast. METHODS Four hundred and eighty-six patients, who were referred to us with a presumptive diagnosis of a mass, underwent Virtual Touch tissue imaging (VTI; Siemens) and Virtual Touch tissue quantification (VTQ; Siemens) after conventional gray-scale US. US-guided percutaneous needle biopsy was then performed on 276 lesions with clinically and radiologically suspicious features. Malignant lesions (n = 122) and IGM (n = 48) were included in the final study group. RESULTS There was a statistically significant difference in shear wave velocity marginal and internal values between the IGM and malignant lesions. The median marginal velocity for IGM and malignant lesions was 3.19 m/s (minimum-maximum 2.49-5.82) and 5.05 m/s (minimum-maximum 2.09-8.46), respectively (p < 0.001). The median internal velocity for IGM and malignant lesions was 2.76 m/s (minimum-maximum 1.14-4.12) and 4.79 m/s (minimum-maximum 2.12-8.02), respectively (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION The combination of VTI and VTQ as a complement to conventional US provides viscoelastic properties of tissues, and thus has the potential to increase the specificity of US.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of our study was to evaluate the shear wave velocity (SWV) of parathyroid lesions by point shear wave elastography (SWE) and to compare their stiffness with that of thyroid nodules and normal thyroid parenchyma quantitatively. METHODS Thirty-six patients considered to have parathyroid disorders by clinical and laboratory tests and scintigraphy were enrolled in the study between January 2012 and February 2015. Conventional sonography, Doppler sonography, and the Virtual Touch tissue quantification (VTQ) method of point SWE (Siemens Medical Solutions, Mountain View, CA) were conducted with a linear transducer (4-9 MHz) while the patients were in the supine position. Then we compared our VTQ measurements with pathologic results. RESULTS The 36 patients included 31 female and 5 male patients with a mean age ± SD of 49 ± 15.7 years (range, 15-79 years). The mean SWV of parathyroid hyperplasia lesions (n = 4) was 1.46 ± 0.23 m/s, whereas the mean SWV of parathyroid adenomas (n = 32) was 2.28 ± 0.50 m/s. The mean SWV of normal thyroid parenchyma (n = 36) was 1.62 ± 0.20 m/s, and the mean SWV of benign thyroid nodules (n = 21) was 2.25 ± 0.51 m/s. A significant difference was found between SWV values of normal thyroid parenchyma and parathyroid adenoma (P < .001). A cutoff value of 1.73 m/s for adenomas led to 90.0% sensitivity and 80.6% specificity. CONCLUSIONS The VTQ method of point SWE may contribute to the discrimination of parathyroid adenomas from the thyroid gland. However, more comprehensive studies are needed.

Abstract
The authors investigated the relationship between the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism and the blood flow characteristics of common carotid (CCA) and brachial arteries (BA) by color Doppler ultrasound (CDUS) in patients with acute anterior myocardial infarction (AAMI). Sixty four patients (11 women and 53 men), aged 25 to 77 years, with AAMI were studied. The ACE genotypes were established. Peak-systolic (PSV) and end-diastolic velocity (EDV) of right and left CCA, PSV of right BA, and intimal-medial thickness (IMT) of both CCAs were measured by CDUS. All results were evaluated statistically. The ACE genotypes were distributed as follows: 43.8% DD, 43.8% ID, and 12.5% II. PSVs of BA and both CCAs were lower in patients with DD and ID than with II (p<0.05). EDVs of both CCAs were also lower in the same groups, but statistically not significant (p>0.05). IMTs of both CCAs did not differ among patients with various ACE genotypes (p>0.05). These results suggest that ACE I/D polymorphism influences Doppler blood flow parameters of both BA and CCA, but does not affect IMT of CCA.

Abstract
The etiology of Behçet’s disease, a systemic vasculitis, is unknown. Vascular involvement may be seen in 25% of patients with Behçet’s disease. Vasculitis make the prognosis of Behçet's disease severe. The aim of this study is to examine the structural and functional changes and relations of these changes with progression and prognosis of Behçet’s disease. For this purpose, 40 patients with Behçet’s disease and 40 healthy volunteer control subjects were analyzed, additionally patients with Behçet’s disease were divided into 2 subgroups as those with vascular complications and those without vascular complications. Intima-media thickness and arterial distensibility were measured in all subjects with carotid artery ultrasonography. Carotid artery distensibility was significantly lower in the patient group compared to the control group (0.67 ±0.2, 0.93 ±0.4, p<0.05), and carotid artery IMT was significantly higher (0.59 ±12, 0.80 ±0.11, p<0.05). A statistically significant increase in IMT has been detected (0.77 ±11, 0.86 ±11, p<0.05) in patients with Behçet’s disease with vascular involvement compared to patients with Behçet’s disease without vascular involvement, arterial distensibility in patients with vascular disease was similar with those who has no vascular disease (0.69 ±0.25, 0.63 ±0.25, p>0.05). There was a significant negative linear regression between arterial distensibility and systolic blood pressure (SBP) (B=-1x10-2, p<0.05), and a significant positive linear regression has also been found between IMT and SBP and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and pulse pressure (PP) (B=6.8x10-3 for SBP, p<0.05, B=6.9x10-3 for DBP, p<0.05, B=6x10-3 for PP, p<0.05). As a result, IMT increases and AD decreases in patients with Behçet’s disease compared to results in the control group. Although more studies are required for this subject, use of noninvasive parameters such as IMT and AD, which reflect the structural and functional characteristics of vasculature, may be useful to define disease progression and subjects at high risk.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the value of placental shear wave velocity (SWV) measurement by acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) imaging for the diagnosis of pre-eclampsia and to determine the relationship between the SWV and the severity of pre-eclampsia. METHODS A prospective study was performed at a center in Turkey between August 2014 and March 2015. The study included consecutive pregnant women in the second or third trimester diagnosed with pre-eclampsia and healthy pregnant women without pre-eclampsia of similar ages. Patients with pre-eclampsia were divided into two groups (severe or mild disease) on the basis of revised American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists criteria. All patients underwent ARFI, and the SWV was measured at several placental locations. RESULTS Overall, 86 women were enrolled (42 with pre-eclampsia, 44 controls). Minimum, maximum, and mean SWV values were significantly higher in the pre-eclampsia group than in the control group (P<0.001 for all). These values were also significantly higher among patients with severe pre-eclampsia than among patients with mild pre-eclampsia (P<0.001 for all). CONCLUSION Measurement of the placental SWV with ARFI imaging is a useful additional method for the diagnosis of pre-eclampsia and for determination of the disease severity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objectives of this study were to investigate the relationship between the segmental localization of liver hydatid cyst by computed tomography (CT) and the presence of cystobiliary communication (CBC) and to identify the risk factors for CBC. PATIENTS AND METHODS One hundred and eleven of 163 patients who underwent liver hydatid surgery between January 2011 and September 2014 were included in this study and analyzed retrospectively. The size, number, stage, and segmental and lobar localization of the cysts were investigated by CT. The presence of CBC and preoperative laboratory findings were recorded from operation notes. RESULTS CBC was more frequent in single large cysts. CBC was most commonly detected in segment 1 (50%), 8 (48.3%), 7 (41.2%), and 4 (40%). CBC was more frequent in the right lobe (40.4%) and Gharbi stage 3 (41.8%) and 4 (55.6%) lesions. There were no differences in CBC according to distance from the hilus. In addition, preoperative total bilirubin, direct bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) elevations were associated with higher CBC frequency (P<0.05). Cyst diameter, number of cysts, and ALP and GGT elevations were independent predictors of CBC presence. CONCLUSION The evaluation of hydatid cyst diameter, morphological stage, and segmental and lobar localization by abdominal CT and measurement of preoperative cyst diameter, number of cysts, and ALP and GGT values may predict the presence of CBC.

Abstract
Background Many studies have shown that evidence supporting the relationship between low bone mineral density (BMD) and coronary artery disease (CAD) has been increasing. There is a significant increase of myocardial infarction in men with low BMD. Purpose We aimed to detect the relationship between BMD and CAD in patients whose CAD was detected with coronary angiography, and its severity and prevalence was detected with Gensini score. Methods A total of 55 patients were selected who were found to have single or multiple infarctions through using coronary angiography in the cardiology clinic. The CAD severity was evaluated by calculating the Gensini score. These patients were divided into two groups: mild CAD and severe CAD groups. Femur bone mineral density (FBMD) was measured with dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. T score values were determined to be normal if the values were >−1.0 (n=22, 40%), and osteopenia–osteoporosis (osteopenic syndrome) if the T score values were ≤−1 (n=33, 60%). Results The FBMD of severe CAD according to the Gensini risk score was found to be significantly lower. FBMD values in patients decreased as their Gensini scores increased. Conclusion There was a significant relationship between CAD and osteopenic syndrome. FBMD level in men with severe CAD is significantly low when compared with patients who have mild CAD.

Abstract
Objective We aimed to evaluate placental stiffness measured by acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) elastography in pregnant women in the second trimester with a normal fetus versus those with structural anomalies and non-structural findings. Materials and Methods Forty pregnant women carrying a fetus with structural anomalies diagnosed sonographically at 18–28 weeks of gestation comprised the study group. The control group consisted of 34 healthy pregnant women with a sonographically normal fetus at a similar gestational age. Placental shear wave velocity (SWV) was measured by ARFI elastography and compared between the two groups. Structural anomalies and non-structural findings were scored based on sonographic markers. Placental stiffness measurements were compared among fetus anomaly categories. Doppler parameters of umbilical and uterine arteries were compared with placental SWV measurements. Results All placental SWV measurements, including minimum SWV, maximum SWV, and mean SWV were significantly higher in the study group than the control group ([0.86 ± 0.2, 0.74 ± 0.1; p < 0.001], [1.89 ± 0.7, 1.59 ± 0.5; p = 0.04], and [1.26 ± 0.4, 1.09 ± 0.2; p = 0.01]), respectively. Conclusion Placental stiffness evaluated by ARFI elastography during the second trimester in pregnant women with fetuses with congenital structural anomalies is higher than that of pregnant women with normal fetuses.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Vasovagal syncope (VS) has a significant place in the etiology of syncope; tilt table (TT) test is used for identification of patients with vasovagal syncope (VS); however, the repeatability of the TT test is low. Upon repeated administration of TT test to patients with a positive result, the test may reveal a negative result. This feature of the test renders it inadequate particularly in evaluating therapeutical efficacy in patients receiving treatment. The left ventricular (LV) volume changes are important in the pathology of VS; in addition, LV volume changes are directly affected by the changes in the arterial system and therefore, the present study investigated arterial distensibility (AD) in this patient population. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 142 VS patients with a positive TT test result (A group) and 93 healthy individuals (B group) were enrolled in the study. The patients received tilt training treatment for 6 months. VS patients were further classified into two: syncope (+) or syncope (-) subgroup according to having at least one or more syncope episode during the 6 months of training program. All patients and controls underwent Doppler echocardiography and AD measurement which were repeated at the end of 6th month in syncope (+) and (-) subgroups. RESULTS The mean AD value of patients in group A was significantly lower than that of participants in group B (0.39 ± 0.1 vs. 0.42 ± 0.1, p = 0.025). In Group A, AD was significantly correlated with left ventricular diastolic filling time (DFT), isovolumetric relaxation time and right ventricular DFT (r = 0.38, p < 0.05; r = -0.42, p < 0.05; r = 0.35, p < 0.05, respectively). Syncope (+) subgroup had lower mean AD value compared to syncope (-) subgroup (0.38 ± 0.1 vs. 0.44 ± 0.1, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS AD may have valuable contribution to understanding the pathophysiology underlying VS and AD may be used in evaluating therapeutical efficacy for vasovagal syncope.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death from cancer in women, and early detection is the key to successful treatment. Unfortunately, even with technological advances, the specificity of imaging modalities is still low. Therefore, we evaluated the value of a newly developed noninvasive technique, acoustic radiation force impulse imaging, for differentiating benign versus malignant breast lesions. METHODS We prospectively examined 141 breast lesions in 122 patients. All lesions were classified according to the American College of Radiology Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) for mammography, BI-RADS for sonography, and Virtual Touch tissue imaging (VTI; Siemens Medical Solutions, Mountain View, CA) pattern. Internal and marginal shear wave velocity (SWV) values for the lesions were noted. The sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, and positive and negative predictive values for VTI and Virtual Touch tissue quantification (VTQ; Siemens Medical Solutions) were calculated. RESULTS The marginal SWV values were statistically higher in malignant lesions (mean ± SD, 5.41 ± 1.37 m/s) than benign lesions (2.91 ± 0.88 m/s; P < .001). When the SWV cutoff level was set at 4.07 m/s, and the higher of the internal and marginal values was adopted, the combination of VTI and VTQ showed 95.1% sensitivity, 99.0% specificity, and 97.8% accuracy. CONCLUSIONS Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System category 4 lesions are the main focus of research for early detection of breast cancer. Unfortunately, BI-RADS category 4 assessment covers a wide range of likelihood of malignancy (2%-95%). This wide range reflects the necessity for a more specific imaging modality. The combination of VTI and VTQ could increase the diagnostic performance of conventional sonography.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the role of doppler ultrasonographorin managing hydronephrosis during pregnancy. METHODS The study included 27 pregnant patients with unilateral symptomatic persistent hydronephrosis (group 1) and 38 pregnant patients with physiological hydronephrosis of pregnancy (group 2). All pregnant patients underwent Doppler Ultrasonography to determine the Resistive Index (RI) and the difference between the RI of the corresponding and contralateral kidney (Delta Resistive Index = delta RI). RESULTS There were no statistical differences between the two groups in terms of age, mean gestational period, or number of pregnancies. The mean renal RI of the hydronephrosis side was 0.68 ± 0.05 in group 1 and 0.60 ± 0.05 in group 2 (p less than 0.001). The mean delta RI of group 1 was significantly higher than the mean delta RI of group 2 (0.07 ± 0.03 versus 0.02 ± 0.01, respectively, p less than 0.001). The RI and delta RI were considered positive with values of more than 0.70 and more than 0.04, respectively, and the RI was sensitive in 44.4% and specific in 92.1% for intervention treatment. The corresponding values for delta RI were 88.9% and 89.5%. The positive predictive value and negative predictive value of delta RI for intervention were 85.7% and 91.9%, respectively. CONCLUSION It is much better to consider delta RI than RI when deciding on interventional treatment in hydronephrosis during pregnancy.

Abstract
Atherosclerosis is a diffuse process that involves vessel structures. In recent years, the relation of noninvasive parameters such as intima-media thickening (IMT), arterial distensibility (AD), and stiffness index (SI) to cardiovascular diseases has been researched. However, we have not found any study that has included all these parameters. The aim of this study is to examine the relation between the presence of coronary artery disease (CAD) and its risk factors to AD, SI, and IMT, which are the noninvasive predictors of atherosclerotic process in the carotid artery. Included in the study were 180 patients who were diagnosed as having CAD by coronary angiography (those with at least > or = 30% stenosis in the coronary arteries) and, as a control group, 53 persons who had normal appearing coronary angiographies. IMT, AD, and SI values of all the patients in the study were measured by echo-Doppler imaging (AD formula = 2 x (AoS - AoD)/PP x AoD, SI formula = (SBP/DBP)/([AoS - AoD]/AoD). Significantly increased IMT (0.82 +/- 0.1, 0.57 +/- 0.1, p<0.05), decreased AD (0.25 +/- 0.9, 0.37 +/- 0.1, p<0.05), and increased SI (13 +/- 4, 8 +/- 3, p<0.05) values were detected in the CAD group compared to the control group. A significant correlation was found between IMT and presence of diabetes mellitus (DM), systolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, and presence of plaque in carotids, and age. In the coronary artery disease group there was a significant correlation between AD and age, systolic blood pressure, and HDL cholesterol levels, while there was no significant correlation with plaque development. A significant correlation was also found between stiffness index and systolic blood pressure and age; however, there was no relation between number of involved vessels and IMT, AD, and SI. We found sensitivity, specificity, and positive predictive and negative predictive values for CAD diagnosis to be 70%, 75%, 77%, and 66%, respectively. In CAD cases, according to data in this study, IMT and SI increased while AD decreased, and this was detected by carotid artery Doppler ultrasonography. Therefore, it was concluded that these cheaper, noninvasive, and easily available parameters could be used in early diagnosis of CAD.
