Abstract
This study aimed to determine whether white matter tracts correlate with kidney function using correlation tractography, and to investigate the effects of dialysis on white matter tracts in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) using differential tractography. Ten patients with ESRD, who had a glomerular filtration rate of < 15 mL/min/1.73 m2, were enrolled in this prospective study. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) was performed both before and after dialysis. We discovered that white matter tracts correlated with the estimated glomerular filtration rate based on pre- and post-dialysis DTI using correlation tractography and investigated the differences in the white matter tracts between pre- and post-dialysis DTI in patients with ESRD using differential tractography. Correlation tractography revealed no quantitative anisotropy of the white matter tracts that correlated with the estimated glomerular filtration rate in pre- and post-dialysis patients with ESRD. Differential tractography revealed significant differences in several white matter tracts, particularly the cingulum, thalamic radiation, corpus callosum, and superior longitudinal fasciculus, between pre- and post-dialysis DTI, which revealed increased diffusion density after dialysis. We demonstrated the significant effects of dialysis on several white matter tracts in patients with ESRD using differential tractography, which showed increased diffusion density after dialysis. In this study, we confirmed the effects of dialysis on brain structure, especially white matter tracts.

Abstract
We investigated the changes in structural connectivity (using diffusion tensor imaging [DTI]) and the structural covariance network based on structural volume using graph theory in patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) compared to a healthy control group. We included 14 patients with NF1, according to international consensus recommendations, and 16 healthy individuals formed the control group. This was retrospectively observational study followed STROBE guideline. Both groups underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging including DTI and 3-dimensional T1-weighted imaging. We analyzed structural connectivity using DTI and Diffusion Spectrum Imaging Studio software and evaluated the structural covariance network based on the structural volumes using FreeSurfer and Brain Analysis Using Graph Theory software. There were no differences in the global structural connectivity between the 2 groups, but several brain regions showed significant differences in local structural connectivity. Additionally, there were differences between the global structural covariance networks. The characteristic path length was longer and the small-worldness index was lower in patients with NF1. Furthermore, several regions showed significant differences in the local structural covariance networks. We observed changes in structural connectivity and covariance networks in patients with NF1 compared to a healthy control group. We found that global structural efficiency is decreased in the brains of patients with NF1, and widespread changes in the local structural network were found. These results suggest that NF1 is a brain network disease, and our study provides direction for further research to elucidate the biological processes of NF1.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to examine differences in functional connectivity between patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) with and without restless legs syndrome (RLS). In addition, the study aimed to identify any potential associations between RLS severity and functional connectivity. METHODS We enrolled patients with ESRD who had been undergoing hemodialysis. Patients with and without RLS were separated into two groups. Using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and a graph theory approach, we determined the functional connectivity of patients with ESRD. The data were collected during a 300-s resting state evaluation performed in the dialysis room prior to dialysis. RESULTS Eighteen of 48 patients with ESRD were diagnosed with RLS, whereas 30 patients did not exhibit RLS symptoms. Notably, functional connectivity metrics differed significantly between patients with and without RLS. Specifically, patients with ESRD and RLS displayed higher values for mean clustering coefficient (0.474 vs. 0.352, p = 0.001), global efficiency (0.520 vs. 0.414, p = 0.001), strength (6.538 vs. 4.783, p = 0.001), and transitivity (0.714 vs. 0.521, p = 0.001), while values for diameter (5.451 vs. 7.338, p = 0.002), eccentricity (4.598 vs. 5.985, p = 0.004), and characteristic path length (2.520 vs. 3.271, p = 0.002) were lower in patients with ESRD and RLS compared to those without RLS. In addition, there were correlations between the RLS severity score and the assortative coefficient (r = 0.479, p = 0.044), the small-worldness index (r = -0.475, p = 0.046), and transitivity (r = 0.500, p = 0.034). CONCLUSIONS We demonstrated differences in functional connectivity between patients with ESRD with and without RLS, which may shed light on the pathophysiology of RLS. Notably, a number of functional connectivity metrics demonstrated strong associations with RLS severity. Our study also confirmed the applicability of fNIRS as a tool for investigating functional connectivity in patients with RLS.

Abstract
Microbiomes in soil ecosystems play a significant role in solubilizing insoluble inorganic and organic phosphate sources with low availability and mobility in the soil. They transfer the phosphate ion to plants, thereby promoting plant growth. In this study, we isolated an unidentified fungal strain, POT1 (Penicillium olsonii TLL1) from indoor dust samples, and confirmed its ability to promote root growth, especially under phosphate deficiency, as well as solubilizing activity for insoluble phosphates such as AlPO4, FePO4·4H2O, Ca3(PO4)2, and hydroxyapatite. Indeed, in vermiculite containing low and insoluble phosphate, the shoot fresh weight of Arabidopsis and leafy vegetables increased by 2-fold and 3-fold, respectively, with POT1 inoculation. We also conducted tests on crops in Singapore's local soil, which contains highly insoluble phosphate. We confirmed that with POT1, Bok Choy showed a 2-fold increase in shoot fresh weight, and Rice displayed a 2-fold increase in grain yield. Furthermore, we demonstrated that plant growth promotion and phosphate solubilizing activity of POT1 were more effective than those of four different Penicillium strains such as Penicillium bilaiae, Penicillium chrysogenum, Penicillium janthinellum, and Penicillium simplicissimum under phosphate-limiting conditions. Our findings uncover a new fungal strain, provide a better understanding of symbiotic plant-fungal interactions, and suggest the potential use of POT1 as a biofertilizer to improve phosphate uptake and use efficiency in phosphate-limiting conditions.

Abstract
In the agricultural industry, the post-harvest leafy vegetable quality and shelf life significantly influence market value and consumer acceptability. This study examined the effects of different storage temperatures on leaf senescence, nitrogen assimilation, and remobilization in Pak Choi (Brassica rapa subsp. chinensis). Mature Pak Choi plants were harvested and stored at two different temperatures, 4 °C and 25 °C. Senescence was tracked via chlorophyll content and leaf yellowing. Concurrently, alterations in the total nitrogen, nitrate, and protein content were quantified on days 0, 3, 6, and 9 in old, mid, and young leaves of Pak Choi plants. As expected, 4 °C alleviated chlorophyll degradation and delayed senescence of Pak Choi compared to 25 °C. Total nitrogen and protein contents were inversely correlated, while the nitrate content remained nearly constant across leaf groups at 25 °C. Additionally, the transcript levels of genes involved in nitrogen assimilation and remobilization revealed key candidate genes that were differentially expressed between 4 °C and 25 °C, which might be targeted to extend the shelf life of the leafy vegetables. Thus, this study provides pivotal insights into the molecular and physiological responses of Pak Choi to post-harvest storage conditions.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aims of this study were to evaluate 1) glymphatic system function in patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) before initiating dialysis compared to healthy controls, and 2) changes in the glymphatic system function after kidney replacement therapy including dialysis in patients with ESKD using the diffusion tensor image analysis along the perivascular space (DTI-ALPS) method. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study was prospectively conducted at a single hospital. We enrolled 14 neurologically asymptomatic patients who first initiated hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis for ESKD and 17 healthy controls. Patients had magnetic resonance imaging scans before initiating dialysis and again 3 months after initiating dialysis and the DTI-ALPS index was calculated. We compared the DTI-ALPS index before and after the initiation of dialysis and compared the DTI-ALPS index between the patients with ESKD and healthy control. RESULTS There were differences in the DTI-ALPS index between ESKD patients before initiating dialysis and healthy controls (1.342 vs. 1.633, p = 0.003). DTI-ALPS index between ESKD patients before initiating dialysis and those after dialysis were not different (1.342 vs. 1.262, p = 0.386). There was a positive correlation between DTI-ALPS index and phosphate (r = 0.610, p = 0.020) in patients with ESKD. CONCLUSION We confirmed the presence of glymphatic dysfunction in patients with ESKD. However, there was no difference in the glymphatic system before and after dialysis initiation. This finding may be related to uremic toxins that are not removed by dialysis in patients with ESKD. This study can be used for the development of pathophysiology of patients with ESKD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate differences in intrinsic prefrontal functional connectivity according to the presence of cognitive impairment in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). METHODS We prospectively enrolled 37 patients with ESRD who had been undergoing hemodialysis for more than 6 months and had no history of neurological or psychiatric disorders. All patients with ESRD underwent the Korean version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA-K) to assess cognitive function. The NIRSIT Lite device (OBELAB Inc.) was used to acquire fNIRS data, and the NIRSIT Lite Analysis Tool program was used to process the data and generate a functional connectivity matrix. We obtained functional connectivity measures by applying graph theory to the connectivity matrix using the BRAPH (brain analysis using graph theory) program. RESULTS Of the 37 patients with ESRD, 23 had cognitive impairment, whereas 14 patients showed no cognitive impairment. Intrinsic prefrontal functional connectivity was significantly different between groups. Network measures of strength, global efficiency, and mean clustering coefficient were lower in ESRD patients with cognitive impairment than in those without cognitive impairment (4.458 vs. 5.129, p = 0.02; 0.397 vs. 0.437, p = 0.03; and 0.316 vs. 0.421, p = 0.003; respectively). There were no significant correlations between MoCA-K scores and clinical characteristics. CONCLUSION We demonstrated a significant association between cognitive function and intrinsic prefrontal functional connectivity in patients with ESRD. ESRD patients with cognitive impairment have reduced connectivity and segregation in the prefrontal brain network compared to those without cognitive impairment.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate functional brain connectivity in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing hemodialysis using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and to analyze the effect of hemodialysis on functional brain connectivity. We prospectively enrolled patients with ESRD undergoing hemodialysis for > 6 months without any history of neurological or psychiatric disorders. fNIRS data were acquired using a NIRSIT Lite device. Measurements were performed thrice in the resting state for each patient: before the start of hemodialysis (pre-HD), 1 h after the start of hemodialysis (mid-HD), and after the end of hemodialysis (post-HD). We processed and exported all data, and created a weighted connectivity matrix using Pearson correlation analysis. We obtained functional connectivity measures from the connectivity matrix by applying a graph theoretical analysis. We then compared differences in functional connectivity measures according to hemodialysis status in patients with ESRD. We included 34 patients with ESRD. There were significant changes in the mean clustering coefficient, transitivity, and assortative coefficient between the pre- and post-HD periods (0.353 vs. 0.399, p = 0.047; 0.523 vs. 0.600, p = 0.042; and 0.043 vs. - 0.012, p = 0.044, respectively). However, there were no changes in the mean clustering coefficient, transitivity, and assortative coefficient between the pre- and mid-HD periods, or between the mid- and post-HD periods. In addition, there were no significant differences in the average strength, global efficiency, and local efficiency among the pre-, mid-, and post-HD periods. We demonstrated a significant effect of hemodialysis on functional brain connectivity in patients with ESRD. Functional brain connectivity changes more efficiently during hemodialysis.

Abstract
Phosphate (Pi) availability is a major factor limiting plant growth and development. The key transcription factor controlling Pi-starvation response (PSR) is PHOSPHATE STARVATION RESPONSE 1 (PHR1) whose transcript levels do not change with changes in Pi levels. However, how PHR1 stability is regulated at the post-translational level is relatively unexplored in Arabidopsis thaliana. Inositol polyphosphates (InsPn) are important signal molecules that promote the association of stand-alone SPX domain proteins with PHR1 to regulate PSR. Here, we show that NITROGEN LIMITATION ADAPTATION (NLA) E3 ligase can associate with PHR1 through its conserved SPX domain and polyubiquitinate PHR1 in vitro. The association with PHR1 and its ubiquitination is enhanced by InsP6 but not by InsP5. Analysis of InsPn-related mutants and an overexpression plant shows PHR1 levels are more stable in itpk4-1 and vih2-4/VIH1amiRNA but less stable in ITPK4 overexpression plants. Under Pi-deficient conditions, nla seedlings contain high PHR1 levels, display long root hair and accumulate anthocyanin in shoots phenocopying PHR1 overexpression plants. By contrast, NLA overexpression plants phenocopy phr1 whose phenotypes are opposite to those of nla. Our results suggest NLA functions as a negative regulator of Pi response by modulating PHR1 stability and the NLA/PHR1 association depends on InsPn levels.

Abstract
Patients undergoing maintenance dialysis have a higher mortality rate associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, and response rates to vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 vary from 29.6% to 96.4% in such patients. This study aimed to assess the immunogenicity of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination in Korean patients undergoing dialysis. We enrolled 70 SARS-CoV-2-vaccinated patients undergoing dialysis, with 11 healthcare workers serving as healthy control subjects. Thirty-two patients had received a third vaccination, whereas 38 had received 2 vaccinations. The healthy control subjects completed the second vaccination. Immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies targeting the receptor-binding domain of the S1 subunit of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein were measured The vaccination responder rates were 86% (37/43), 96% (26/27), and 91% (10/11) in the patients undergoing hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis and healthy controls, respectively. IgG antibody levels were significantly higher when a third dose was administered, independent of the type of vaccine or the time interval between vaccination and the subsequent blood sampling date. When a third dose of vaccine was administered, there was no difference in IgG antibody levels between those receiving cross-vaccination or a single vaccine. There was no significant difference in IgG antibodies between healthy controls and patients undergoing dialysis. Patients on dialysis exhibited a sufficient antibody-related response to vaccination against SARS-CoV-2, even in those receiving cross-vaccination, and the antibody titer was higher after a third vaccination. Therefore, it is necessary to administer a third vaccine dose to Korean patients undergoing dialysis.

Abstract
Background: Copeptin is the carboxyl-terminal part of the vasopressin precursor protein, and its concentration is an independent predictor of the onset of chronic kidney disease and a rapid decline in the glomerular filtration rate. The glomerular filtration rate is regarded as the best indicator of kidney transplant function and is a predictor of graft and patient survival. We investigated the clinical significance of copeptin as an early predictor of renal graft dysfunction in renal transplant recipients.Methods: We measured serum creatinine, cystatin C, and copeptin concentrations in renal transplant recipients on the day of their operation, as well as on postoperative days 3, 7, 30, and 365. Acute rejection was defined as a sudden decrease in renal function accompanied by histological changes.Results: Eight renal transplant recipients were enrolled in the study from July 2018 to December 2019. Four patients experienced histologically confirmed transplant rejection. All four cases involved acute T-cell rejection. No significant correlation was found between the copeptin level and the presence or absence of rejection at any time point. In subgroup analyses, changes in creatinine, the estimated glomerular filtration rate, cystatin, and copeptin did not show statistical significance.Conclusions: We anticipated that copeptin would be useful to identify individuals at high risk of transplant rejection; however, our study failed to show an association. Further research will be needed to overcome the limitations of this study.

Abstract
Introduction It is a recent finding that glymphatic system dysfunction contributes to various neurological problems. The purpose of this research was to assess the function of the glymphatic system in neurologically asymptomatic early chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients and healthy controls, using diffusion tensor image analysis along perivascular space (DTI-ALPS) index. Methods In a prospective study, we included patients with early CKD who were asymptomatic for neurological issues and obtained clinical and laboratory data. In all participants, brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) was conducted. We used DSI program for DTI preprocessing and DTI-ALPS index estimation. The DTI-ALPS index was compared between patients with early CKD and healthy controls, and the association between clinical characteristics and the DTI-ALPS index was investigated. Results Eighteen patients with early CKD and 18 healthy controls were included in this study. Patients with early CKD had lower DTI-ALPS index than healthy controls (1.259 ± 0.199 vs. 1.477 ± 0.232, p = 0.004). In the correlation analysis, the DTI-ALPS index had no significant relationship with other clinical factors. Conclusion We suggest dysfunction of glymphatic system in patients with early chronic kidney disease using the DTI-ALPS index. This may be related to the pathophysiology of neurological problems including impairment of cognition in patients with early CKD.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to investigate alterations of the glymphatic system function in patients with cluster headache. METHODS We enrolled patients with cluster headache and healthy controls, and they underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), including diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). We used the MRIcron and DSI studio programs for DTI preprocessing and DTI analysis with perivascular space (DTI-ALPS) index calculation. RESULTS Fourteen patients with cluster headache and 23 healthy controls were enrolled. The DTI-ALPS indexes of the groups were significantly different. The DTI-ALPS index for the patients with cluster headache was lower than that for the healthy controls (1.586 vs. 1.786, p = 0.044). There was a significant negative correlation between the DTI-ALPS index and age in the patients with cluster headache (r = -0.549, p = 0.042). However, the DTI-ALPS index was not associated with other clinical characteristics, including disease duration and headache intensity (r = -0.405, p = 0.150; r = -0.048, p = 0.869, respectively). CONCLUSION Patients with cluster headache had a lower DTI-ALPS index than the healthy controls; this might indicate glymphatic system dysfunction in the patients with cluster headache. Further research is required to determine whether glymphatic system dysfunction is related to the pathophysiology of cluster headache.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to evaluate glymphatic system function in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients with hippocampal sclerosis (HS) in comparison to healthy controls, using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI)‐analysis along the perivascular space (ALPS) method. We hypothesized that there is glymphatic system dysfunction in TLE patients with HS. Methods We retrospectively enrolled 25 TLE patients with HS and 26 age‐ and sex‐matched healthy controls. All participants underwent DTI with the same 3T magnetic resonance imaging scanner, and the DTI‐ALPS index was calculated. We evaluated the differences in the DTI‐ALPS index between TLE patients with HS and healthy controls. Moreover, we evaluated the correlation between the DTI‐ALPS index and clinical characteristics of epilepsy, including age, age at seizure onset, duration of epilepsy, and number of anti‐seizure medications (ASMs). Results There was a difference in the DTI‐ALPS index between TLE patients with HS and healthy controls. The DTI‐ALPS index in TLE patients with HS was lower than that in healthy controls (1.497 vs. 1.668, P = .015). However, there was no difference in the DTI‐ALPS index between the newly diagnosed TLE patients with HS and the chronic TLE patients with HS. The DTI‐ALPS index was negatively correlated with age (r = −0.420, P = .036). However, the DTI‐ALPS index was not correlated with other clinical characteristics, including age at seizure onset, duration of epilepsy, and number of ASMs. Significance Our findings showed that the DTI‐ALPS index was significantly lower in TLE patients with HS than in healthy controls, indicating the presence of glymphatic system dysfunction in TLE patients with HS. Our study also suggests that the DTI‐ALPS method may be useful for evaluating glymphatic system function in epilepsy.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to analyze the glymphatic system function and its relationship with clinical characteristics, global diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) parameters, and global structural connectivity in treatment-naïve patients with newly diagnosed focal epilepsy. METHODS This retrospective single-center study investigated patients with focal epilepsy and healthy controls. All participants underwent routine brain magnetic resonance imaging and DTI. DTI analysis along the perivascular space (DTI-ALPS) was used to evaluate glymphatic system function. We also calculated the measures of global DTI parameters, including whole-brain fractional anisotropy (FA), mean diffusivity (MD), axial diffusivity (AD), and radial diffusivity (RD), and performed a graph theoretical network analysis to measure global structural connectivity. RESULTS A total of 109 patients with focal epilepsy and 88 healthy controls were analyzed. There were no significant differences in the DTI-ALPS index (1.67 vs. 1.68, p = 0.861) between the groups. However, statistically significant associations were found between the DTI-ALPS index and age (r = -0.242, p = 0.01), FA (r = 0.257, p = 0.007), MD (r = -0.469, p < 0.001), AD (r = -0.303, p = 0.001), RD (r = -0.434, p < 0.001), and the assortative coefficient (r = 0.230, p = 0.016) in patients with focal epilepsy. CONCLUSION The main finding of this study is that DTI-ALPS index is significantly correlated with global DTI parameters and structural connectivity measures of the brain in patients with focal epilepsy. In addition, DTI-ALPS index decreases with age in these patients. We conclude that the DTI-ALPS index can be used to investigate glymphatic system function in patients with focal epilepsy.

Abstract
Background We aimed to compare glymphatic dysfunction between patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and healthy controls and analyze the correlation between the glymphatic function and clinical characteristics using the diffusion tensor image analysis along with the perivascular space (DTI-ALPS) index. Methods We prospectively enrolled neurologically asymptomatic 49 patients with ESRD undergoing dialysis and 38 healthy controls. Diffusion tensor image was conducted using the same 3T scanner, and the DTI-ALPS index was calculated. We compared the DTI-ALPS index between the patients with ESRD and healthy controls. In addition, we conducted a correlation analysis between the clinical characteristics and DTI-ALPS index in patients with ESRD. Results There were significant differences in the DTI-ALPS index between patients with ESRD and healthy controls. The DTI-ALPS index in patients with ESRD was lower than that in healthy controls (1.460 vs. 1.632, p = 0.003). In addition, there was a significant positive correlation between the DTI-ALPS index and serum parathyroid hormone levels (r = 0.357, p = 0.011). Conclusion We demonstrated glymphatic dysfunction in patients with ESRD, as revealed by the DTI-ALPS index. This study also reveals the feasibility of the DTI-ALPS method to determine glymphatic function in patients with ESRD, which could be used in future research studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of machine learning approach based on clinical factors and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to predict anti-seizure medication (ASM) response in focal epilepsy. We hypothesized that ASM response in focal epilepsy can be predicted using a machine learning approach. METHODS In this retrospective study conducted at a tertiary hospital, we enrolled 160 patients with newly diagnosed focal epilepsy. All of them underwent DTI from January 2017 to July 2019, with a follow-up at least 12 months after the diagnosis of epilepsy based on regular evaluation of ASMs. We analyzed the patients' clinical characteristics, and the conventional DTI measurements and extracted the structural connectomic profiles from the DTI. We employed the support vector machine (SVM) algorithm, and a k-fold cross-validation was executed. RESULTS The highest accuracy of classification was ensured based on the clinical factors. A SVM classifier based on the clinical factors revealed an accuracy of 87.5% and an area under curve (AUC) of 0.882. Another SVM classifier based on the conventional DTI measures demonstrated an accuracy of 62.5% and an AUC of 0.611. In addition, an SVM classifier based on the structural connectomic profiles revealed an accuracy of 68.7% and an AUC of 0.667. The AUC of the ROC curve generated from the clinical factors was significantly higher than the ROC curves based on the conventional DTI measures or structural connectomic profiles. CONCLUSION Machine learning approach is useful in predicting the ASM response in focal epilepsy. The clinical factor is more important than the conventional DTI measures and structural connectomic profiles in predicting the ASM response in focal epilepsy.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study was conducted to better understand hemodialysis by reviewing the most-cited articles related to it. METHODS We searched articles on the Web of Science and selected the 100 most frequently cited articles. Subsequently, we reviewed these articles and identified their characteristics. RESULTS The 100 most frequently cited articles were published in 21 journals. The majority of these papers were published in the following journals: Kidney International (26 articles), New England Journal of Medicine (18 articles), Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (14 articles), and the American Journal of Kidney Disease (13 articles). The 100 most-cited articles were published in 25 countries. The United States of America was the country with the highest number of publications (65 articles). The University of Michigan was the institution with the highest number of articles (14 articles). FK Port was the author with the largest number of publications (13 articles). CONCLUSIONS This is the first study in the field of nephrology that provides a list of the 100 most-cited articles on hemodialysis. Through this study, clinicians will be able to recognize major academic interests and research trends in hemodialysis.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of using a machine learning approach based on diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) to identify patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy. We analyzed the usefulness of combining conventional DTI measures and structural connectomic profiles. This retrospective study was conducted at a tertiary hospital. We enrolled 55 patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy. All of the subjects underwent DTI from January 2017 to March 2020. We also enrolled 58 healthy subjects as a normal control group. We extracted conventional DTI measures and structural connectomic DTI profiles. We employed the support vector machines (SVM) algorithm to classify patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy and healthy subjects based on the conventional DTI measures and structural connectomic profiles. The SVM classifier based on conventional DTI measures had an accuracy of 68.1% and an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.682. Another SVM classifier based on the structural connectomic profiles demonstrated an accuracy of 72.7% and an AUC of 0.727. The SVM classifier based on combining the conventional DTI measures and structural connectomic profiles had an accuracy of 81.8% and an AUC of 0.818. DTI using machine learning is useful for classifying patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy and healthy subjects. Combining both the conventional DTI measures and structural connectomic profiles results in a better classification performance than using conventional DTI measures or the structural connectomic profiles alone to identify juvenile myoclonic epilepsy.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Several lines of evidence suggest that the amygdala-hippocampus is involved in the epileptogenic network of juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME). The aim of this study was to investigate the alterations in the individual nuclei of the amygdala and hippocampal subfields, and the intrinsic amygdala-hippocampal network of patients with JME compared to healthy controls. METHODS This retrospective study conducted at a single tertiary hospital involved 35 patients with newly diagnosed JME, and 34 healthy subjects. We calculated the individual structural volumes of 18 nuclei in the amygdala, and 38 hippocampal subfields using three-dimensional volumetric T1-weighted imaging and FreeSurfer program. We also performed an analysis of the intrinsic amygdala-hippocampal global and local network based on these volumes using a graph theory and Brain Analysis using Graph Theory (BRAPH) program. We investigated the differences in these volumes and network measures between patients with JME and healthy controls. RESULTS There were no significant volume differences in the nuclei of the amygdala and hippocampal subfields between patients with JME and healthy controls. However, we found significant differences in the global network between patients with JME and healthy controls. The mean clustering coefficient was significantly decreased in patients with JME compared to healthy controls (0.473 vs. 0.653, p = .047). In addition, specific regions in the hippocampal subfields showed significant differences in the local network between the two groups. The betweenness centrality of the right CA1-head, right hippocampus-amygdala-transition area, left hippocampal fissure, left fimbria, and left CA3-head, was increased in patients with JME compared to healthy controls. CONCLUSION The intrinsic amygdala-hippocampal global and local networks differed in patients with JME compared to healthy controls, which may be related to the pathogenesis of JME, and memory dysfunction in patients with JME.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of machine learning based on diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) measures to distinguish patients with focal epilepsy versus healthy controls and antiseizure medication (ASM) responsiveness. METHODS This was a retrospective study performed at a tertiary hospital. We enrolled 456 patients with focal epilepsy, who underwent DTI and were taking ASMs. We enrolled 100 healthy subjects as a control. We obtained the conventional DTI measures and structural connectomic profiles from the DTI. RESULTS The support vector machine (SVM) classifier based on the conventional DTI measures revealed an accuracy of 76.5% and an area under curve (AUC) of 0.604 (95% Confidence interval (CI), 0.506-0.695). Another SVM classifier combined with structural connectomic profiles demonstrated an accuracy of 82.8% and an AUC of 0.701 (95% CI, 0.606-0.784). Of the 456 patients with epilepsy, 242 patients were ASM good responders, whereas 214 patients were ASM poor responders. In the classification of the ASM responders, an SVM classifier based on the conventional DTI measures revealed an accuracy of 54.9% and an AUC of 0.551 (95% CI, 0.443-0.655). Another SVM classifier combined with structural connectomic profiles demonstrated an accuracy of 59.3% and an AUC of 0.594 (95% CI, 0.485-0.695). CONCLUSION DTI using a machine learning is useful for differentiating patients with focal epilepsy from healthy controls, but it cannot classify ASM responsiveness. Combining structural connectomic profiles results in a better classification performance than the use of conventional DTI measures alone for identifying focal epilepsy and ASM responsiveness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acute exacerbation of interstitial lung disease (AE-ILD) causes clinically significant deterioration and has an extremely poor prognosis with high mortality. Recently, several studies reported the effectiveness of direct hemoperfusion with a polymyxin B-immobilized fiber column (PMX-DHP) in patients with AE-ILD as a potential therapy. This study describes the clinical effectiveness and safety of PMX-DHP in patients with AE-ILD. METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 10 patients (11 episodes) with AE-ILD treated with PMX-DHP from January 2018 to June 2019. We compared laboratory and physiologic data of the ratio of partial pressure arterial oxygen to fraction of inspired oxygen (P/F ratio) and level of inflammatory markers before and after implementation of PMX-DHP. RESULTS Ten patients were included according to the 2016 revised definition of acute exacerbation of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Nine patients had IPF and one patient had fibrotic nonspecific interstitial pneumonia. Most patients (90.9%) were treated with a steroid pulse, and four patients (36.4%) were treated with an immunosuppressant. The median number of PMX-DHP cycles was 2, and the median duration of each cycle was 6 hours. After PMX-DHP, the mean P/F ratio improved (86 [range, 63-106] vs. 145 [86-260], P=0.030) and interleukin-6 and c-reactive protein decreased (79 [35-640] vs. 10 [5-25], P=0.018 and 14 [4-21] vs. 5 [2-6], P=0.019, respectively). The 30-day mortality rate was 27.3% and the 90-day mortality rate was 72.7%. CONCLUSIONS PMX-DHP treatment improved P/F ratio and reduced inflammatory markers in AE-ILD patients.

Abstract
Neuron-specific enolase (NSE) is a glycolytic enzyme, which is associated with neuronal cell dysfunction in the brain. This study evaluated the role of serum NSE levels of patients with transient global amnesia (TGA). In addition, the relationship between serum NSE levels and the clinical features of TGA was explored. Forty-eight patients with TGA were prospectively included, and their serum NSE levels were measured. We investigated serum NSE levels in patients with TGA. In addition, we analyzed the differences in clinical characteristics between patients with elevated and normal serum NSE levels. Of the 48 patients with TGA, 16 patients (33.3%) had elevated serum NSE levels (25.0 ± 11.5 ng/mL), whereas 32 patients (66.7%) showed normal serum NSE levels (12.8 ± 2.1 ng/mL). The patients with elevated serum NSE levels exhibited higher levels of cognitive impairment than those with normal serum NSE levels (4/16 vs. 1/32, p = 0.036). The serum NSE levels showed a relatively high discrimination (AUC 0.684) between patients with and without cognitive impairment, with 80.0% sensitivity and 74.4% specificity at a cut-off value 17.3 ng/mL. A third of all patients with TGA carry elevated serum NSE levels, which suggests that the neuronal cell dysfunction could be associated with TGA pathogenesis. In addition, it might be correlated with cognitive impairment.

Abstract
Our previous study demonstrated that patients with end-stage renal disease had decreased structural and functional brain connectivity, and there was a significant association between brain connectivity and cognitive function. The aim of this study was to evaluate the alterations of structural and functional connectivity using graph theoretical analysis in neurologically asymptomatic patients with relatively early-stage chronic kidney disease (CKD).We enrolled 18 neurologically asymptomatic patients with early CKD and 28 healthy controls. All the subjects underwent diffusion-tension imaging and resting functional magnetic resonance imaging. We calculated structural and functional connectivity based on diffusion-tension imaging and resting functional magnetic resonance imaging using a graph theoretical analysis. Then, we investigated differences of structural and functional connectivity between the CKD patients and the healthy controls.All the measures of structural connectivity were significantly different between the patients with CKD and healthy controls. The global efficiency, local efficiency, mean clustering coefficient, and small-worldness index were decreased, whereas the characteristic path length was increased in the patients with CKD compared with healthy controls. The structural betweenness centrality of the left calcarine and right posterior cingulum was also significantly different from that in healthy participants. However, all the measures of global functional connectivity in patients with CKD were not different from those in healthy controls. In patients with CKD, the functional betweenness centrality of the right insular cortex, right occipital pole, and right thalamus was significantly different from that in healthy participants.There are significant alterations of the global structural connectivity between the patients with CKD and the healthy subjects, whereas the global functional connectivity of the brain network is preserved. We find that the efficiency of the structural brain network is decreased in the patients with CKD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Artificial intelligence (AI) has had a significant impact on our lives and plays many roles in various fields. By analyzing the past 30 years of AI trends in the field of nephrology, using a bibliography, we wanted to know the areas of interest and future direction of AI in research related to the kidney. METHODS Using the Institute for Scientific Information Web of Knowledge database, we searched for articles published from 1990 to 2019 in January 2020 using the keywords AI; deep learning; machine learning; and kidney (or renal). The selected articles were reviewed manually at the points of citation analysis. RESULTS From 218 related articles, we selected the top fifty with 1188 citations in total. The most-cited article was cited 84 times and the least-cited one was cited 12 times. These articles were published in 40 journals. Expert Systems with Applications (three articles) and Kidney International (three articles) were the most cited journals. Forty articles were published in the 2010s, and seven articles were published in the 2000s. The top-fifty most cited articles originated from 17 countries; the USA contributed 16 articles, followed by Turkey with four articles. The main topics in the top fifty consisted of tumors (11), acute kidney injury (10), dialysis-related (5), kidney-transplant related (4), nephrotoxicity (4), glomerular disease (4), chronic kidney disease (3), polycystic kidney disease (2), kidney stone (2), kidney image (2), renal pathology (2), and glomerular filtration rate measure (1). CONCLUSIONS After 2010, the interest in AI and its achievements increased enormously. To date, AIs have been investigated using data that are relatively easy to access, for example, radiologic images and laboratory results in the fields of tumor and acute kidney injury. In the near future, a deeper and wider range of information, such as genetic and personalized database, will help enrich nephrology fields with AI technology.

Abstract
Innovative approaches are urgently required to alleviate the growing pressure on agriculture to meet the rising demand for food. A key challenge for plant biology is to bridge the notable knowledge gap between our detailed understanding of model plants grown under laboratory conditions and the agriculturally important crops cultivated in fields or production facilities. This Perspective highlights the recent development of new analytical tools that are rapid and non-destructive and provide tissue-, cell- or organelle-specific information on living plants in real time, with the potential to extend across multiple species in field applications. We evaluate the utility of engineered plant nanosensors and portable Raman spectroscopy to detect biotic and abiotic stresses, monitor plant hormonal signalling as well as characterize the soil, phytobiome and crop health in a non- or minimally invasive manner. We propose leveraging these tools to bridge the aforementioned fundamental gap with new synthesis and integration of expertise from plant biology, engineering and data science. Lastly, we assess the economic potential and discuss implementation strategies that will ensure the acceptance and successful integration of these modern tools in future farming practices in traditional as well as urban agriculture.

Abstract
Precision agriculture requires new technologies for rapid diagnosis of plant stresses, such as nutrient deficiency and drought, before the onset of visible symptoms and subsequent yield loss. Here, we demonstrate a portable Raman probe that clips around a leaf for rapid, in vivo spectral analysis of plant metabolites including carotenoids and nitrates. We use the leaf-clip Raman sensor for early diagnosis of nitrogen deficiency of the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana as well as two important vegetable crops, Pak Choi (Brassica rapa chinensis) and Choy Sum (Brassica rapa var. parachinensis). In vivo measurements using the portable leaf-clip Raman sensor under full-light growth conditions were consistent with those obtained with a benchtop Raman spectrometer measurements on leaf-sections under laboratory conditions. The portable leaf-clip Raman sensor offers farmers and plant scientists a new precision agriculture tool for early diagnosis and real-time monitoring of plant stresses in field conditions.

Abstract
Background Postoperative acute kidney injury (AKI), which increases the risk of postoperative morbidity and mortality, poses a major concern to surgeons. We conducted this study to analyze the risk factors associated with the occurrence of AKI after orthopedic surgery. Methods This was a retrospective study that included 351 patients who underwent total hip or knee replacement surgery at Inje University Haeundae Paik Hospital between January 2012 and December 2016. Results AKI occurred in 13 (3.7%) of the 351 patients. The patients’ preoperative estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was 66.66±34.02 mL/min/1.73 m2 in the AKI group and 78.07±21.23 mL/min/1.73 m2 in the non-AKI group. The hemoglobin levels were 11.21±1.65 g/dL in the AKI group and 12.39±1.52 g/dL in the non-AKI group. Hemoglobin level was related to increased risk of AKI (odds ratio [OR], 0.13; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.02–0.68; p=0.016). Administration of crystalloid or colloid fluid alone and the perioperative amount of fluid did not show any significant relationship with AKI. Further analysis of the changes in eGFR was performed using a cutoff value of 7.54. The changes in eGFR were significantly related to decreased risk of AKI (OR, 0.74; 95% CI, 0.61–0.89; p=0.002). Conclusion Renal function should be monitored closely after orthopedic surgery if patients have chronic kidney disease and low hemoglobin level. Predicting the likelihood of AKI occurrence, early treatment of high-risk patients, and monitoring perioperative laboratory test results, including eGFR, will help improve patient prognosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to investigate alterations in structural and functional brain connectivity between patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) who were undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD) and hemodialysis (HD). METHODS We enrolled 40 patients with ESRD who were undergoing PD (20 patients) and HD (20 patients). We also enrolled healthy participants as a control group. All of the subjects underwent diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). Using data from the structural and functional connectivity matrix based on DTI and rs-fMRI, we calculated several network measures using graph theoretical analysis. RESULTS The measures of global structural connectivity were significantly different between the patients with ESRD who were undergoing PD and healthy subjects. The global efficiency and local efficiency in the patients with PD were significantly decreased compared with those in healthy participants. However, all of the measures of global structural connectivity in the patients with HD were not different from those in healthy participants. Conversely, in the global functional connectivity, the characteristic path length was significantly increased and the small-worldness index was decreased in patients with HD. However, the measures of the global functional connectivity in the patients with PD were not different from those in healthy subjects. CONCLUSION This study revealed that alterations in structural and functional connectivity in patients who were undergoing PD and HD were different than those in healthy controls. These findings suggest that brain networks may be affected by different types of renal replacement therapy.

Abstract
Nutrient deficiency alters growth and development of crop plants and compromises yield. Real-time non-invasive monitoring of the nutritional status of crops would allow timely applications of fertilizers to optimize for growth and yield at different times of the plant's life cycle. Here, we used Raman spectroscopy to characterize Arabidopsis and two varieties of leafy vegetable crops under nitrogen sufficient and deficient conditions. We showed that the 1046 cm-1 Raman peak serves as a specific signature of nitrogen status in planta, which can be used for early diagnosis of nitrogen deficiency in plants before onset of any visible symptoms. Abstract
Abstract
Background and Aims
Our previous study demonstrated that patients in End stage renal disease had decreased structural and functional brain connectivity, and there was significant association between brain connectivity and cognitive function. The aim of this study was to evaluate the alterations of structural and functional connectivity using graph theoretical analysis in the neurologically asymptomatic patients with relatively early stage chronic kidney disease (CKD).
Method
We prospectively enrolled neurologically asymptomatic 20 patients with CKD stage 3 and 20 healthy controls, and all of the subjects underwent diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and resting state functional MRI (rs-fMRI). Using data from the structural and functional connectivity matrix based on DTI and rs-fMRI, we calculated network measures, including global efficiency, local efficiency, mean clustering coefficient, characteristic path length, and small-worldness index, and investigated the differences between the patients with CKD and healthy controls.
Results
The patients with CKD had altered global structural connectivity and preserved functional connectivity compared to healthy controls. The all of the measures of global structural connectivity were significantly different between the patients with CKD and healthy controls. However, all of the measures of global functional connectivity in the CKD patients were not different from those in healthy participants. In the CKD patients, the functional betweenness centrality of the right insular cortex, right occipital pole, and right thalamus was significantly different from that in healthy subjects. The structural betweenness centrality of the left calcarine, right posterior cingulum was significantly different from that in healthy subjects.
Conclusion
There were significant alterations of global structural connectivity between patients with CKD and control. However, functional connectivity of brain network was preserved in contrast to ESRD patients.

Abstract
Background: The purpose of this study was to identify the top 100 cited articles dedicated to sleep medicine published in journals that have made key contributions to the field. Methods: We performed a search of journals and selected 100 top-cited articles by utilizing the Institute for Scientific Information database available under the banner of the Web of Science. Next, we manually reviewed the contents of the top 100 cited articles. We examined the characteristics of the articles, such as the number of citations, ranking, authorship, article title, year of publication, publishing journal, publication type, and topic categories. Results: The top-cited articles were published in 49 journals, and the most frequently cited journal was Sleep (23 articles). The top 100 cited articles originated from institutions in 9 countries, with the USA contributing 67 articles. The institution associated with the largest numbers of sleep medicine citation classics was Stanford University (11 articles). Morin CM, who was the first author for 6 articles, was listed most frequently in the sleep medicine citation classics. The publication years were concentrated in the 2000s, when 42 articles were published. The topics included 35 insomnia studies, 25 sleep physiology studies, 22 obstructive sleep apnea studies, and 19 other studies. Conclusions: The present study provides a detailed list of the most-cited articles on sleep medicine. This currently relevant approach provides an opportunity to recognize the classic articles on sleep, to provide useful insights into international leaders, and to describe research trends in the field of sleep medicine.

Abstract
Background and Purpose The aim of this study was to evaluate the structural and functional connectivities of brain network using graph theoretical analysis in neurologically asymptomatic patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). We further investigated the prevalence of cognitive impairment (CI) in ESRD patients and analyzed the association between network measures of brain connectivity and cognitive function. Methods We prospectively enrolled 40 neurologically asymptomatic ESRD patients, 40 healthy controls, and 20 disease controls. All of the subjects underwent diffusion-tensor imaging (DTI) and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). We calculated measures of structural and functional connectivities based on DTI and rs-fMRI, respectively, and investigated differences therein between the ESRD patients and the healthy controls. We assessed cognitive function in the ESRD patients using the Korean version of the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease neuropsychological battery. Results The ESRD patients exhibited decreased global structural and functional brain connectivities, as well as alterations of network hubs compared to the healthy controls and disease controls. About 70% of the ESRD patients had CI. Moreover, ESRD patients without CI exhibited decreased global connectivity and alterations of network hubs. Furthermore, there was a significant positive association between measures of brain connectivity and cognitive function. Conclusions We found that ESRD patients exhibited decreased structural and functional brain connectivities, and that there was a significant association between brain connectivity and cognitive function. These alterations in the brain network may contribute to the pathophysiological mechanism of CI in ESRD patients.

Abstract
Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is an inherited genetic disorder caused by mutations in the TSC1 or TSC2 genes, encoding hamartin and tuberin. We aimed to evaluate structural volumes and connectivity of patients with TSC compared to those of healthy subjects. We consecutively enrolled 13 patients with a diagnosis of TSC and 15 age- and sex-matched healthy control subjects. Subjects underwent three-dimensional volumetric T1-weighted imaging, suitable for a quantitative analysis. Structural volumes were investigated using FreeSurfer image analysis software, and structural connectivity was calculated from a connectivity matrix, which was estimated from the correlation analysis of structural volumes using the Brain Analysis using Graph Theory software package. Differences in structural volumes and connectivity were analyzed between patients with TSC and healthy subjects. There were no differences of cortical volumes between the patients with TSC and healthy controls. However, we found decreased gray matter volumes in several subcortical regions in the patients with TSC compared to those in healthy controls, specifically in the putamen (0.3212 vs. 0.3841%, p = 0.001), even after multiple corrections. Regarding global structural connectivity, the small-worldness index was significantly decreased in patients with TSC compared to that in healthy controls (0.907 vs. 0.977, p = 0.049). This study revealed structural volumes and connectivity in patients with TSC that are significantly different from those in healthy controls. These alterations have implications for the pathogenesis of TSC.

Abstract
Several SQUAMASA PROMOTER BINDING PROTEIN-LIKE (SPL) transcription factors are involved in plant developmental transition from vegetative to reproductive growth. However, the function of SPL10 in regulating floral transition is largely unknown. It is also not known which Mediator subunit mediates SPL10 transcriptional activity. Here, we used overexpression lines and knockout mutants to examine the role of SPL10 in flowering-time regulation and we investigated possible interactions of SPL10 with several mediator subunits in vitro and in vivo. Plants overexpressing SPL10 showed precocious flowering, whereas the triple loss-of-function mutants of SPL10 and its two homologous genes, SPL2 and SPL11, flowered late compared with wild-type plants. We found that SPL10 interacts with MED25, a subunit of the Mediator complex, which bridges transcription factors and RNA polymerase II to facilitate transcription initiation. Genetic analysis showed that MED25 acts downstream of SPL10 to execute SPL10-regulated floral transition. Furthermore, SPL10 was required for MED25 association with the promoters of two target genes, FUL and LFY. We provide evidence that SPL10 recruits MED25 to the promoters of target genes to regulate flowering time. Our results on the SPL10/MED25 module are relevant to the molecular mechanism of other SPL family members.

Abstract
Nitrogen deficiency (-N) in plants triggers leaf senescence which is regulated by the transcription factor ORE1. Little is known about post-translational regulation of ORE1 in this process. Here, we show that UBP12/UBP13 (ubiquitin-specific protease 12/13) antagonize the action of NLA (nitrogen limitation adaptation) E3 ligase to maintain ORE1 homeostasis. In vitro pull-down and in vivo co-immunoprecipitation assays demonstrated specific binding between UBP12/UBP13 and ORE1. We further analyzed in various genotypes total Chl content and expression levels of senescence-related genes under -N conditions. We found that UBP12/UBP13 can deubiquitinate polyubiquitinated ORE1 in vitro and increase the stability of ORE1 in vivo in MG132/cycloheximide-chase experiments. Plants overexpressing UBP12/UBP13 display accelerated leaf senescence which is reversed by the ore1 mutation. By contrast, the senescence phenotype of plants overexpressing ORE1 is exacerbated by UBP12/UBP13 overexpression. The expression of senescence-related genes tracks the senescence phenotype. ORE1 protein levels can be elevated by UBP12/UBP13 overexpression but decreased in ubp12-2w/13-3. In conclusion, UBP12/UBP13 deubiquitinate ORE1 to stabilize this transcription factor and promote its activity as a positive regulator for leaf senescence under -N conditions. Our study shows that UBP12/UBP13 counteracts the effect of NLA E3 ligase to accelerate leaf senescence under nitrogen starvation.

Abstract
Relapsing polychondritis is a rare and multi-system autoimmune disease of unknown etiology characterized by inflammation and destruction of cartilaginous structures. Its clinical manifestations include recurrent chondritis of the ears, nose, pinna, peripheral joints, and laryngotracheobronchial tree and can be life-threatening in advanced cases of laryngotracheal stenosis. Because of the rarity of relapsing polychondritis and lack of understanding of its pathogenesis, there is no standard medical therapy, and treatment is tailored according to disease activity and site of organ involvement. In respiratory failure due to laryngotracheal involvement, which has been reported in up to 50% of relapsing polychondritis patients and is a major cause of death, immediate procedures such as stenting and tracheostomy are very important. This report describes a 70-year-old male patient suffering from tracheobronchomalacia due to relapsing polychondritis who was treated with Montgomery T-tube insertion.

Abstract
Plant immune response is initiated upon the recognition of pathogen-associated molecular patterns such as elf18. Previously, we identified an Arabidopsis ELF18-INDUCED LONG NONCODING RNA 1 (ELENA1), as a positive transcriptional regulator of immune responsive genes. ELENA1 associated with Mediator subunit 19a (MED19a) to enhance enrichment of the complex on PATHOGENESIS-RELATED GENE 1 (PR1) promoter. In vitro and in vivo RNA-protein interaction experiments showed that ELENA1 can also interact with FIBRILLARIN 2 (FIB2). Co-immunoprecipitation and bimolecular fluorescence complementation assay showed that FIB2 directly interacts with MED19a in nucleoplasm and nucleolus. Analysis of fib2 mutant showed that FIB2 functions as a negative transcriptional regulator for immune responsive genes, including PR1. Genetic and biochemical analyses demonstrated that ELENA1 can dissociate the FIB2/MED19a complex and release FIB2 from PR1 promoter to enhance PR1 expression. ELENA1 increases PR1 expression by evicting the repressor (FIB2) from the activator (MED19a). Our findings uncover an additional layer of complexity in the transcriptional regulation of plant immune responsive genes by long noncoding RNA.

Abstract
Objectives Serum procalcitonin (PCT) is a specific biomarker that rises after bacterial infection, and levels of PCT are known to correlate with the severity and mortality of patients with pneumonia and sepsis. However, the usefulness of PCT levels in acute pyelonephritis is unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of using the PCT level as a predictive test for bacteremia in acute pyelonephritis. Methods Between January 2012 and June 2013, 140 patients diagnosed with acute pyelonephritis were admitted to Haeundae Paik Hospital. Serum PCT, C-reactive protein (CRP), and white blood cell (WBC) levels at pre- and post- treatment were measured. Blood and urine cultures were obtained from all patients. The levels of PCT, CRP, and WBCs were each compared between the blood culture-positive and blood culture-negative groups to assess their effectiveness in predicting bacteremia. Results Pre-treatment PCT level was 0.77 ng/mL (95% CI: 0.42–1.60 ng/mL) in the blood culture-negative group and 4.89 ng/mL (95% CI: 2.88–9.04 ng/mL) in the blood culture-positive group, and the increase between the two groups was statistically significant. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of PCT level for prediction of bacteremia was 0.728. A cut-off value of 1.23 ng/mL indicated a sensitivity of 79.0 % and specificity of 60.0 % for PCT level. Conclusions Serum PCT level is a useful predictive test for bacteremia in acute pyelonephritis. Through the early detection of bacteremia, serum PCT level can help estimate the prognosis and predict complications such as sepsis.

Abstract
Objectives The purpose of this study was to evaluate the synergic effect of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) and low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on bisphosphonate-treated osteoblasts. Materials and Methods Human fetal osteoblast cells (hFOB 1.19) were cultured with 100 µM alendronate. Low-level Ga-Al-As laser alone or with 100 ng/mL rhBMP-2 was then applied. Cell viability was measured with MTT assay. The expression levels of receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand (RANKL), macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF), and osteoprotegerin (OPG) were analyzed for osteoblastic activity inducing osteoclastic activity. Collagen type and transforming growth factor beta-1 were also evaluated for bone matrix formation. Results The results showed that rhBMP-2 and LLLT had a synergic effect on alendronate-treated osteoblasts for enhancing osteoblastic activity and bone matrix formation. Between rhBMP-2 and LLLT, rhBMP-2 exhibited a greater effect, but did not show a significant difference. Conclusion rhBMP-2 and LLLT have synergic effects on bisphosphonate-treated osteoblasts through enhancement of osteoblastic activity and bone formation activity.

Abstract
Nitrogen is an important macronutrient in plants and its deficiency induces rapid leaf senescence. Two genes, ORE1 and NITROGEN LIMITATION ADAPTATION (NLA), have been implicated in regulating the senescence process but their relationship is unclear1,2. Here, we show that nla and pho2 (also known as ubc24) plants develop rapid leaf senescence under nitrogen-starvation condition, whereas ore1 and nla/ore1 and pho2 (ubc24)/ore1 plants stay green. These results suggest that ORE1 acts downstream of NLA and PHO2 (UBC24). NLA interacts with ORE1 in the nucleus and regulates its stability through polyubiquitination using PHO2 (UBC24) as the E2 conjugase. Our findings identified ORE1 as a downstream target of NLA/PHO2 (UBC24) and showed that post-translational regulation of ORE1 levels determines leaf senescence during nitrogen deficiency.
