Abstract
BACKGROUND The use of computerized devices for neuropsychological assessment (CNADs) as an effective alternative to the traditional pencil-and-paper modality has recently increased exponentially, both in clinical practice and research, especially due to the pandemic. However, several authors underline that the computerized modality requires the same psychometric validity as "in-presence" tests. The current study aimed at building and validating a computerized version of the verbal and non-verbal recognition memory test (RMT) for words, unknown faces and buildings. METHODS Seventy-two healthy Italian participants, with medium-high education and ability to proficiently use computerized systems, were enrolled. The sample was subdivided into six groups, one for each age decade. Twelve neurological patients with mixed aetiology, age and educational level were also recruited. Both the computerized and the paper-and-pencil versions of the RMT were administered in two separate sessions. RESULTS In healthy participants, the computerized and the paper-and-pencil versions of the RMT showed statistical equivalence for words, unknown faces and buildings. In the neurological patients, no statistical difference was found between the performance at the two versions of the RMT. A moderate-to-good inter-rater reliability between the two versions was also found in both samples. Finally, the computerized version of the RMT was perceived as acceptable by both healthy participants and neurological patients at System Usability Scale (SUS). CONCLUSION The computerized version of the RMT can be used as a reliable alternative to the traditional version.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mild cognitive impairment in Parkinson's disease (PD-MCI) includes deficits in different cognitive domains, and one domain to explore for neurocognitive impairment following the DSM-V is social cognition. However, this domain is not included in current criteria for PD-MCI diagnosis. Moreover, tests vary across studies. It is, therefore, crucial to optimize cognitive assessment in PD-MCI. We aimed to do so by using Machine Learning. METHODS 275 PD patients were included. Four cognitive batteries were created: two Standard ones (Levels I and II), applying current criteria and "traditional" tests; two Alternative ones (Levels I and II), which incorporated a test of social cognition. These batteries were included in the Random Forest (RF) classifier. To assess RF performance, the AUC was considered, and the Variable Importance Index was estimated to understand the contribution of each test in PD-MCI classification. RESULTS Standard Level I and II showed an AUC of 0.852 and 0.892, while Alternative Level I and II showed an AUC of 0.898 and of 0.906. Variable Importance Index revealed that TMT B-A, Ekman test, RAVLT-IR, MoCA, and Action Naming were tests that most contributed to PD-MCI classification. CONCLUSION The Alternative level I assessment demonstrated a similar classification capacity to the Standard level II assessment. This finding suggests that in the cognitive assessment of PD patients, it is crucial to consider the most affected cognitive domains in this clinical population, including social cognition. Taken together, these results suggest to revise current criteria for the diagnosis of PD-MCI.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Effective prevention programs targeting risk factors for cognitive decline in the elderly are recommended given the progressive increase in the aging of the general population. The Social and Cognitive Online Training (SCOT) project is a randomized, controlled, parallel clinical trial designed to prevent the age-related decline in executive and social functions. METHODS The study included 60 cognitively healthy older adults (age = 71.8±5.3, education = 12.3±3.7, MoCA = 25.1±2.4). Participants underwent a baseline clinical and neuropsychological assessment and were then assigned to either an experimental group (SCOT) or a non-specific cognitive training group (CON). Both 8-week digital interventions included two individual cognitive training sessions and one group meeting per week. Post-intervention assessment evaluated the efficacy of the training on specific outcome measures: the Tower of London for executive functioning, the Ekman-60 Faces test, and the Mini-Social cognition & Emotional Assessment battery for social cognition. A measure of loneliness was included as an exploratory outcome. RESULTS Baseline demographic and neuropsychological characteristics were balanced between SCOT (n = 29) and CON (n = 28) groups. Pre-post-intervention analyses showed improvements in executive functioning and social cognition in both groups, without significant interaction effects. Exploratory post-hoc analyses stratifying the SCOT group by training performance showed significant post-training improvements in executive functioning, emotion recognition, and cognitive theory of mind for high-performing participants. DISCUSSION Results provide preliminary evidence for the beneficial effects of SCOT training, particularly for those who performed best during the training. The SCOT training could represent a new intervention to promote socio-cognitive well-being in the context of active ageing and dementia prevention.

Abstract
In Parkinson's disease (PD), impairment of Theory of Mind (ToM) has recently attracted an increasing number of neuroscientific investigations. If and how functional connectivity of the ToM network is altered in PD is still an open question. First, we explored whether ToM network connectivity shows potential PD-specific functional alterations when compared to healthy controls (HC). Second, we tested the role of the duration of PD in the evolution of functional alterations in the ToM network. Between-group connectivity alterations were computed adopting resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) data of four groups: PD patients with short disease duration (PD-1, n = 72); PD patients with long disease duration (PD-2, n = 22); healthy controls for PD-1 (HC-1, n = 69); healthy controls for PD-2 (HC-2, n = 22). We explored connectivity differences in the ToM network within and between its three subnetworks: Affective, Cognitive and Core. PD-1 presented a global pattern of decreased functional connectivity within the ToM network, compared to HC-1. The alterations mainly involved the Cognitive and Affective ToM subnetworks and their reciprocal connections. PD-2-those with longer disease duration-showed an increased connectivity spanning the entire ToM network, albeit less consistently in the Core ToM network, compared to both the PD-1 and the HC-2 groups. Functional connectivity within the ToM network is altered in PD. The alterations follow a graded pattern, with decreased connectivity at short disease duration, which broadens to a generalized increase with longer disease duration. The alterations involve both the Cognitive and Affective subnetworks of ToM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Innovative digital solutions are shaping a new concept of dementia care, opening additional venues for prevention, diagnosis, monitoring and treatment. Hereby, we report the development of a tablet-based teleneuropsychology platform (Tenèpsia®), from concept to certification as Medical Device (MD) Class IIA, as per new MD regulation 745/2017. METHODS The platform was designed for the remote cognitive evaluation and created thanks to the effort of a collaborative working group including experts from three Italian scientific societies and Biogen Italia S.r.l. (hereafter "Biogen"), and developers from Xenia Reply and Inside AI. The development strategy was guided by converting traditional paper-and-pencil tests into digital versions while maintaining comparable neuropsychological features and optimizing patient accessibility and user experience. The experts focused on the choice and adaptation of traditional neuropsychology measures for a 45-min teleneuropsychology assessment. RESULTS The developers created a web and a mobile interface, respectively, for the professional (neuropsychologist) and non-professional (patient and caregiver) use. Recording of voice, drawing and typing information was enabled. Instant dashboards provide a quick overview of the patient's condition. Simulation activities were performed to obtain MD certification, valid across Europe. CONCLUSION Neuropsychology services will benefit from the implementation in clinics of harmonized digital tools with adequate scientific and technological standards. The use of digital cognitive testing for the diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment is expected to enhance patient and clinician outcomes through simplified, digital objective data collection, sparing of time and resources, with a positive impact on healthcare costs and access to treatments, reducing inequalities and delays in diagnosis and cure.

Abstract
Semantic interference (SI) and phonological facilitation (PF) effects occur when multiple representations are co-activated simultaneously in complex naming paradigms, manipulating the context in which word production is set. Although the behavioral consequences of these psycholinguistic effects are well-known, the involved brain structures are still controversial. This paper aims to provide a systematic review and a coordinate-based meta-analysis of the available functional neuroimaging studies investigating SI and PF in picture naming paradigms. The included studies were fMRI experiments on healthy subjects, employing paradigms in which co-activations of representations were obtained by manipulating the naming context using semantically or phonologically related items. We examined the principal methodological aspects of the included studies, emphasizing the existing commonalities and discrepancies across single investigations. We then performed an exploratory coordinate-based meta-analysis of the reported activation peaks of neural response related to SI and PF. Our results consolidated previous findings regarding the involvement of the left inferior frontal gyrus and the left middle temporal gyrus in SI and brought out the role of bilateral inferior parietal regions in PF.

Abstract
Deaf individuals may report difficulties in social interactions. However, whether these difficulties depend on deafness affecting social brain circuits is controversial. Here, we report the first meta-analysis comparing brain activations of hearing and (prelingually) deaf individuals during social perception. Our findings showed that deafness does not impact on the functional mechanisms supporting social perception. Indeed, both deaf and hearing control participants recruited regions of the action observation network during performance of different social tasks employing visual stimuli, and including biological motion perception, face identification, action observation, viewing, identification and memory for signs and lip reading. Moreover, we found increased recruitment of the superior-middle temporal cortex in deaf individuals compared with hearing participants, suggesting a preserved and augmented function during social communication based on signs and lip movements. Overall, our meta-analysis suggests that social difficulties experienced by deaf individuals are unlikely to be associated with brain alterations but may rather depend on non-supportive environments.

Abstract
The Cognitive Reserve (CR) hypothesis accounts for individual differences in vulnerability to age- or pathological-related brain changes. It suggests lifetime influences (e.g., education) increase the effectiveness of cognitive processing in later life. While evidence suggests CR proxies predict cognitive performance in older age, it is less clear whether CR proxies attenuate age-related decline on social cognitive tasks. This study investigated the effect of CR proxies on unimodal and cross-modal emotion identification. Sixty-six older adults aged 60-78 years were assessed on CR proxies (Cognitive Reserve Index Questionnaire, NART), unimodal(faces only, voices only), and cross-modal (faces and voices combined) emotion recognition and executive function (Stroop Test). No CR proxy predicted performance on emotion recognition. However, NART IQ predicted performance on the Stroop test; higher NART IQ was associated with better performance. The current study suggests CR proxies do not predict performance on social cognition tests but do predict performance on cognitive tasks.

Abstract
Functional alterations in brain connectivity have previously been described in Parkinson's disease, but it is not clear whether individual differences in connectivity profiles might be also linked to severity of motor-symptom manifestation. Here we investigated the relevance of individual functional connectivity patterns measured with resting-state fMRI with respect to motor-symptom severity in Parkinson's disease, through a whole-brain, data-driven approach (connectome-based predictive modeling). Neuroimaging and clinical data of Parkinson's disease patients from the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative were derived at baseline (session 1, n = 81) and at follow-up (session 2, n = 53). Connectome-based predictive modeling protocol was implemented to predict levels of motor impairment from individual connectivity profiles. The resulting predictive model comprised a network mainly involving functional connections between regions located in the cerebellum, and in the motor and frontoparietal networks. The predictive power of the model was stable along disease progression, as the connectivity within the same network could predict levels of motor impairment, even at a later stage of the disease. Finally, connectivity profiles within this network could be identified at the individual level, suggesting the presence of individual fingerprints within resting-state fMRI connectivity associated with motor manifestations in Parkinson's disease.

Abstract
The role of either short-term memory (STM) or working memory (WM) in sentence comprehension is a matter of debate. Although it is commonly accepted that memory resources are necessary for sentence comprehension, there is no agreement regarding the nature of their role. The aim of this review is to investigate and synthesize assessment tools and correlation data between STM or WM and sentence comprehension in probable Alzheimer's disease (AD). To this aim, a systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature was conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines. PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, PsycInfo, and LLBA databases were searched. Two independent authors selected peer-reviewed articles published in English and focused on the relationship between STM or WM and sentence comprehension in probable AD. A total of 11 case-control studies were included at the end of the selection process. Most studies adopted offline tasks to evaluate sentence comprehension, while a small number of authors applied online experimental tasks. The digit span forward and backward were the most employed standardized tests to evaluate phonological STM and WM, respectively. The meta-analysis results supported the association between performance on STM and WM and comprehension tasks. However, moderate heterogeneity was found, mainly due to the small number of included studies, especially for STM, and the substantial variability of the adopted tasks. Therefore, in order to clarify the specific source of language comprehension deficits, new and sophisticated experiments should be conducted using adequate material.

Abstract
The concreteness effect (CE), namely a better performance with concrete compared to abstract concepts, is a constant feature in healthy people, and it usually increases in persons with aphasia (PWA). However, a reversal of the CE has been reported in patients affected by the semantic variant of Primary Progressive Aphasia (svPPA), a neurodegenerative disease characterized by anterior temporal lobe (ATL) atrophy. The present scoping review aims at identifying the extent of evidence regarding the abstract/concrete contrast in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and svPPA and associated brain atrophy. Five online databases were searched up to January 2023 to identify papers where both concrete and abstract concepts were investigated. Thirty-one papers were selected and showed that while in patients with AD, concrete words were better processes than abstract ones, in most svPPA patients, there was a reversal of the CE, with five studies correlating the size of this effect with ATL atrophy. Furthermore, the reversal of CE was associated with category-specific impairments (living things) and with a selective deficit of social words. Future work is needed to disentangle the role of specific portions of the ATL in concept representation.

Abstract
It has been suggested that the inferior longitudinal fasciculus (ILF) may play an important role in several aspects of language processing such as visual object recognition, visual memory, lexical retrieval, reading, and specifically, in naming visual stimuli. In particular, the ILF appears to convey visual information from the occipital lobe to the anterior temporal lobe (ATL). However, direct evidence proving the essential role of the ILF in language and semantics remains limited and controversial. The first aim of this study was to prove that patients with a brain glioma damaging the left ILF would be selectively impaired in picture naming of objects; the second aim was to prove that patients with glioma infiltrating the ATL would not be impaired due to functional reorganization of the lexical retrieval network elicited by the tumor. We evaluated 48 right-handed patients with neuropsychological testing and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) before and after surgery for resection of a glioma infiltrating aspects of the left temporal, occipital, and/or parietal lobes; diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) was acquired preoperatively in all patients. Damage to the ILF, inferior frontal occipital fasciculus (IFOF), uncinate fasciculus (UF), arcuate fasciculus (AF), and associated cortical regions was assessed by means of preoperative tractography and pre-/pos-toperative MRI volumetry. The association of fascicles damage with patients' performance in picture naming and three additional cognitive tasks, namely, verbal fluency (two verbal non-visual tasks) and the Trail Making Test (a visual attentional task), was evaluated. Nine patients were impaired in the naming test before surgery. ILF damage was demonstrated with tractography in six (67%) of these patients. The odds of having an ILF damage was 6.35 (95% CI: 1.27-34.92) times higher among patients with naming deficit than among those without it. The ILF was the only fascicle to be significantly associated with naming deficit when all the fascicles were considered together, achieving an adjusted odds ratio of 15.73 (95% CI: 2.30-178.16, p = .010). Tumor infiltration of temporal and occipital cortices did not contribute to increase the odd of having a naming deficit. ILF damage was found to be selectively associated with picture naming deficit and not with lexical retrieval assessed by means of verbal fluency. Early after surgery, 29 patients were impaired in naming objects. The association of naming deficit with percentage of ILF resection (assessed by 3D-MRI) was confirmed (beta = -56.78 ± 20.34, p = .008) through a robust multiple linear regression model; no significant association was found with damage of IFOF, UF or AF. Crucially, postoperative neuropsychological evaluation showed that naming scores of patients with tumor infiltration of the anterior temporal cortex were not significantly associated with the percentage of ILF damage (rho = .180, p > .999), while such association was significant in patients without ATL infiltration (rho = -.556, p = .004). The ILF is selectively involved in picture naming of objects; however, the naming deficits are less severe in patients with glioma infiltration of the ATL probably due to release of an alternative route that may involve the posterior segment of the AF. The left ILF, connecting the extrastriatal visual cortex to the anterior region of the temporal lobe, is crucial for lexical retrieval on visual stimulus, such as in picture naming. However, when the ATL is also damaged, an alternative route is released and the performance improves.

Abstract
Background: Experimental investigations and clinical observations have shown that not only faces but also voices are predominantly processed by the right hemisphere. Moreover, right brain-damaged patients show more difficulties with voice than with face recognition. Finally, healthy subjects undergoing right temporal anodal stimulation improve their voice but not their face recognition. This asymmetry between face and voice recognition in the right hemisphere could be due to the greater complexity of voice processing. Methods: To further investigate this issue, we tested voice and name recognition in twelve congenitally blind people. Results: The results showed a complete overlap between the components of voice recognition impaired in patients with right temporal damage and those improved in congenitally blind people. Congenitally blind subjects, indeed, scored significantly better than control sighted individuals in voice discrimination and produced fewer false alarms on familiarity judgement of famous voices, corresponding to tests selectively impaired in patients with right temporal lesions. Conclusions: We suggest that task difficulty is a factor that impacts on the degree of its lateralization.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Social cognition deficits are reported in several neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the availability of tasks for the clinical assessment is still limited, preventing the full characterization of socio-cognitive dysfunctions in neurological patients. This study aims to present a new task to assess the recognition of complex mental states from faces (FACE test), reporting normative data for the Italian population and an example of its clinical application to 40 PD patients. METHODS Two-hundred twenty-nine Italian participants with at least 5 years of education were enrolled. Data were analyzed according to the method of equivalent scores; test-retest reliability and convergent validity were assessed. Two short versions of the FACE test were defined for clinical and research purposes. The prevalence of deficits in the FACE test was computed in the PD sample, as well as correlations with cognitive performance and diagnostic accuracy. RESULTS Regression analyses revealed significant effects of demographic variables on FACE performance, with younger and more educated individuals showing higher scores. Twenty-eight percent of PD patients showed borderline/pathological performance, which was correlated with emotion recognition/attribution abilities, and attentive-executive functions. The FACE test was accurate (80%) in distinguishing PD patients with socio-cognitive dysfunctions from both controls and PD patients without emotion recognition/attribution difficulties. CONCLUSION The FACE test represents a new tool assessing the ability to recognize complex mental states from facial expressions. Overall, these results support its use in both clinical and research settings, as well as the presence of affective processing deficits in a subsample of PD patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The comprehension profile of people with agrammatism is a debated topic. Syntactic complexity and cognitive resources, in particular phonological short-term memory (pSTM), are considered as crucial components by different interpretative accounts. AIM To investigate the interaction of syntactic complexity and of pSTM in sentence comprehension in a group of persons with aphasia with and without agrammatism. METHODS & PROCEDURES A cohort of 30 participants presenting with aphasia was assessed for syntactic comprehension and for pSTM. A total of 15 presented with agrammatism and 15 had fluent aphasia. OUTCOMES & RESULTS Linear nested mixed-model analyses revealed a significant interaction between sentence type and pSTM. In particular, participants with lower pSTM scores showed a reduced comprehension of centre-embedded object relatives and long coordinated sentences. Moreover, a significant interaction was found between sentence type and agrammatism, with a lower performance for passives within the agrammatic group. CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS These results confirm that pSTM is involved in the comprehension of complex structures with an important computational load, in particular coordinated sentences, and long-distance filler gap dependencies. On the contrary, the specific deficit of the agrammatic group with passives is a pure syntactic deficit, with no involvement of pSTM.

Abstract
Background Emotion recognition and social deficits have been previously reported in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the extent of these impairments is still unclear and social cognition is excluded from the cognitive domains considered in the current criteria for PD mild cognitive impairment (MCI). This study aims to analyze emotion recognition, affective and cognitive theory of mind in early PD patients classified according to Level II MCI criteria, and to evaluate the prevalence of socio-cognitive deficits in this sample. Methods We enrolled 45 participants with PD, classified as cognitively unimpaired (CU; n = 32) or MCI (n = 13) based on a standard neuropsychological assessment. Social cognitive skills were evaluated through validated tests for emotion recognition (i.e., Ekman 60-faces test, Ek60 Test) and mental states attribution (Story-based Empathy Task, SET) and compared to a group of 45 healthy controls (HC). Between-group differences in social tasks were performed, as well as correlation analyses to assess the relationship between social, cognitive, and clinical variables. Finally, the number of patients with social cognitive impairments in both MCI and CU subgroups was computed based on Italian normative data. Results Statistical comparison revealed significant differences among groups in the Ek60 test, with MCI obtaining significantly lower scores than HC and CU, especially for negative emotions. Significant differences were detected also in the SET, with lower performance in emotion and intention attribution for both PD groups compared to HC. A significant correlation emerged between the Ek60 test and emotion attribution. Nine patients showed poor performance at social tasks, five of them being classified as PD-CU. Discussion Parkinson's disease cognitive profile was characterized by emotion recognition and attribution deficits. These results, as well as the detection of CU patients with isolated socio-cognitive impairments, underline the importance of assessing social cognition in PD as a possible early marker of cognitive decline.

Abstract
Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) or globus pallidum internus (GPi) improves motor functions in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) but may cause a decline in specific cognitive domains. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess the long-term (1-3 years) effects of STN or GPi DBS on four cognitive functions: (i) memory (delayed recall, working memory, immediate recall), (ii) executive functions including inhibition control (Color-Word Stroop test) and flexibility (phonemic verbal fluency), (iii) language (semantic verbal fluency), and (iv) mood (anxiety and depression). Medline and Web of Science were searched, and studies published before July 2021 investigating long-term changes in PD patients following DBS were included. Random-effects model meta-analyses were performed using the R software to estimate the standardized mean difference (SMD) computed as Hedges' g with 95% CI. 2522 publications were identified, 48 of which satisfied the inclusion criteria. Fourteen meta-analyses were performed including 2039 adults with a clinical diagnosis of PD undergoing DBS surgery and 271 PD controls. Our findings add new information to the existing literature by demonstrating that, at a long follow-up interval (1-3 years), both positive effects, such as a mild improvement in anxiety and depression (STN, Hedges' g = 0,34, p = 0,02), and negative effects, such as a decrease of long-term memory (Hedges' g = -0,40, p = 0,02), verbal fluency such as phonemic fluency (Hedges' g = -0,56, p < 0,0001), and specific subdomains of executive functions such as Color-Word Stroop test (Hedges' g = -0,45, p = 0,003) were observed. The level of evidence as qualified with GRADE varied from low for the pre- verses post-analysis to medium when compared to a control group.

Abstract
In this chapter, the literature concerning the dissociation between concrete and abstract words is reviewed, with a specific focus on the role of the temporal lobes. A number of studies have demonstrated the so-called "concreteness effect," that is, the superior processing of concrete versus abstract words. However, some neuropsychological patients have been described with a reversal of concreteness effect, namely, a better performance with abstract than concrete words. Available data suggest that the most frequent causes of this reversed effect are herpes simplex encephalitis and semantic dementia, which typically affect bilaterally anterior temporal regions. Direct electrical stimulation of the left temporal pole further supports this correlation, while the neuroimaging literature is more controversial. In fact, data from neuroimaging studies show either that abstract and concrete noun processing at least partly relies on the activation of a common left-lateralized network, or that abstract word processing is supported by the activation of networks within the left inferior frontal gyrus and the middle temporal gyrus. In between abstract and concrete concepts are idioms, which are represented by concrete actions conveying abstract mental states and events. The involvement of the temporal lobes in processing this particular figure of language is discussed.

Abstract
The assessment of recognition memory is useful in several neurological conditions, but normative data for visual recognition memory of complex figures are still missing for the Italian population. The aim of this study is to present a new short test of visual recognition memory that consists in a supplementary task to be administered after the free delayed recall trial of the Modified Taylor Complex Figure (MTCF). The MTCF-Recognition Trial (MTCF-RT) includes 10 tables, each with a sub-component of the MTCF coupled with two interfering stimuli. Participants are asked to point, for each triplet, the item that was part of the original picture. Normative data were collected from a sample of 280 healthy Italian native speakers ranging in age from 18 to 89 years. The mean recognition score on the MTCF-RT was 9.125 ± 0.996. Results from multiple regression analyses showed that age and education (but not gender) were significant predictors of performance. Therefore, we provided correction grids to adjust raw scores for age and education and computed equivalent scores for the use of the MTCF-RT in the clinical assessment of recognition memory.

Abstract
Several clinical studies have reported a double dissociation between abstract and concrete concepts, suggesting that they are processed by at least partly different networks in the brain. However, neuroimaging data seem not in line with neuropsychological reports. Using the ALE method, we run a meta-analysis on 32 brain-activation imaging studies that considered only nouns and verbs. Five clusters were associated with concrete words, four clusters with abstract words. When only nouns were selected three left activation clusters were found to be associated with concrete stimuli and only one with abstract nouns (left IFG). These results confirm that concrete and abstract words processing involves at least partially segregated brain areas, the IFG being relevant for abstract nouns and verbs while more posterior temporoparietal-occipital regions seem to be crucial for processing concrete words, in contrast with the neuropsychological literature that suggests a temporal anterior involvement for concrete words. We investigated the possible reasons that produce different outcomes in neuroimaging and clinical studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Neurocognitive disorders in Parkinson's disease (PD) are common and heterogeneous. The aim of this study was to use a data-driven method to describe different cognitive phenotypes in PD and to explore anxiety, depression, and motor disturbances across the different cognitive profiles. METHOD Latent profile analysis was applied to the neuropsychological performances of 65 patients with idiopathic PD assessed by means of a battery of tests that encompass measures of attention, memory, executive functions, social cognition, language, and visuospatial abilities. RESULTS A three-cluster model produced the best solution: Cluster A (21.54%) included patients with intact cognition or with a relatively slight cognitive impairment in memory and executive functioning; Cluster B (53.85%) included patients with an intermediate level of cognitive impairment; and Cluster C (24.61%) included patients with the most severe cognitive impairment, with greater deficit compared to Cluster B in executive functioning, and, notably, in tasks with a predominantly posterior cortical basis (naming and visuospatial abilities). The three subgroups did not differ in terms of age, gender, disease duration, motor symptom severity or side of onset, levodopa equivalent daily dose, level of anxiety, or depression; however, patients from Cluster C showed greater impairment than patients from Cluster A in measures of everyday functioning. CONCLUSIONS We presented a qualitative description of three distinct cognitive phenotypes emerging from a sample of 65 PD patients. The three clusters seem to be related to daily functioning but are independent from the stage of disease, motor functioning, anxiety, and depression. Abstract
Data gathered in the field of the experimental social psychology have shown that it is more difficult to recognize a person through his/her voice than through his/her face and that false alarms (FA) are produced more in voice than in face recognition. Furthermore, some neuropsychological investigations have suggested that in patients with damage to the right anterior temporal lobe (ATL) the number of FA could be higher for voice than for face recognition. In the present study we assessed FA during recognition of famous people from faces and voices in patients with unilateral ATL tumours and in normal participants tested after anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tCDS), over the left or right ATL. The number of FA was significantly higher in patients with right than in those with left temporal tumours on both face and voice familiarity. Furthermore, lesion side did not differentially affect patient's sensitivity or response criterion when recognizing famous faces, but influenced both these measures on a voice recognition task. In fact, in this condition patients with right temporal tumours showed a lower sensitivity index and a lower response criterion than those with left-sided lesions. In normal subjects, the greater right sided involvement in voice than in face processing was confirmed by the observation that right ATL anodal stimulation significantly increased voice but only marginally influenced face sensitivity. This asymmetry between face and voice processing in the right hemisphere could be due to the greater complexity of voice processing and to the difficulty of forming stable and well-structured representations, allowing to evaluate if a presented voice matches or not with an already known voice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It has long been debated whether in Williams syndrome (WS) there is a preferential processing of local with respect to global forms, in contrast to the typical 'global advantage' in healthy individuals, which in WS seems to exist only for faces. AIMS We aimed at verifying it and to assess the role of stimulus familiarity by comparing performances with faces to those with other objects using the same type of task. METHODS AND PROCEDURE A group of children and adolescents with WS and controls with typical development performed a modified version of three tasks: Mooney (with faces and/or guitars), Jane (with faces and houses) and Navon task. OUTCOMES AND RESULTS Individuals with WS were able to process at a global level not only faces but also objects, although they were impaired when they had to compare or discriminate between two stimuli. All groups showed an advantage for global processing, with familiarity improving it. However, WS participants did not benefit from familiarity as much as typically developing young individuals. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS Peculiar abilities for face stimuli in WS did not emerge nor did a clear facilitation related to object familiarity. These results are useful for planning effective interventions.

Abstract
Cognitive function impairment due to high altitude exposure has been reported with some contradictory results regarding the possible selective cognitive domain involvement. We prospectively evaluated in 36 lowlanders, exposed for 3 consecutive days to an altitude of 3,269 m, specific cognitive abilities (attention, processing speed, and decision-making) required to safely explore the mountains, as well as to work at altitude. We simultaneously monitored the physiological parameters. Our study provides evidence of a reduced processing speed in lowlanders when exposed to altitude in the first 24 h. There was a fairly quick recovery since this impairment was no more detectable after 36 h of exposure. There were no clinically relevant effects on decision-making, while psychomotor vigilance was unaffected at altitude except for individuals with poor sleep. Significant changes were seen in physiological parameters (increased heart rate and reduced peripheral oxygen saturation). Our results may have practical implications, suggesting that individuals should practice prudence with higher ascent when performing risky activities in the first 24–36 h, even at altitudes below 3,500 m, due to an impairment of the cognitive performance that could worsen and lead to accidents.

Abstract
Introduction: Parkinson's Disease (PD) is characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms, among which deficits in social cognition might affect ~20% of patients. This study aims to evaluate the role of social cognitive abilities in the perceived impact of COVID-19 emergency, and the effects of lockdown measures on patients' social network and caregivers' burden. Methods: Fourteen PD patients performed a neuropsychological battery including sociocognitive tasks before the introduction of COVID-19 restrictive measures (i.e., social distancing and isolation). A structured interview through an online platform was performed in the last 2 weeks of the first lockdown phase to assess patients' health status, perception of COVID-19 emergency, changes in caregivers' burden, and patients' social isolation. Non-parametric analyses were performed to evaluate the association between social skills and patients' COVID-19 perception, as well as the effects of restrictive measures. Results: At baseline evaluation, half of the PD patients showed sociocognitive dysfunctions, mainly on mentalizing abilities. Patients with impaired social cognition skills showed a significantly lower concern on the possible effects of COVID-19 on their health. Caregiver burden and patients' social network remained stable during the lockdown. Conclusion: These preliminary results underline that PD sociocognitive dysfunctions might affect patients' abilities to estimate the effects of COVID-19 infection. However, the lack of a significant increase in caregivers' burden and social isolation suggests, in our sample, a good coping to COVID-19 emergency. Since COVID-19 pandemic can have direct and indirect severe consequences in patients with PD, the development of educational and preventive programs is recommended.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Memory priming seems possible even during apparently adequate anaesthesia. However, the effects of different anaesthetics and type of stimuli, by virtue of their specific neural underpinnings, have not been considered. OBJECTIVE To determine if intra-operative implicit memory is affected by the type of anaesthesia (propofol or sevoflurane) or by the type of stimuli (abstract or concrete words). DESIGN Two consecutive, randomised controlled experiments. SETTING Neurological institute in Milan, Italy. PATIENTS Forty-three patients undergoing anaesthesia with propofol (experiment 1) and 32 patients undergoing anaesthesia with sevoflurane (experiment 2). Patients were ASA I or II, age 18 to 65 years, native Italian speakers, right-handed and without any condition affecting memory or hearing. INTERVENTION During anaesthesia, the patients heard a list of either concrete or abstract words or no words at all (controls). Explicit memory was tested with an explicit recall task and the Brice Interview; implicit memory was assessed through a word stem completion test. OUTCOME MEASURES The number of explicitly recalled words, positivity to the Brice Interview, the proportion of target and nontarget hits, and a derived implicit memory score. RESULTS With propofol, the proportion of target hits was significantly greater than the proportion of nontarget hits for the concrete word experimental group (P = 0.018). The implicit memory score of the concrete word experimental group was significantly higher than the score of both the abstract word experimental group (P = 0.000) and the concrete word control group (P = 0.023). With sevoflurane, the proportion of target hits was significantly higher than the proportion of nontarget hits for the abstract word experimental group only (P = 0.027). No patients had a BIS above 60 and no one could recall intra-operative events or words. CONCLUSION Intra-operative memory for words can form during apparently adequate BIS-guided anaesthesia but is modified by propofol or sevoflurane acting on different brain targets. Further studies on larger samples and using neuroimaging techniques are needed. TRIAL REGISTRATION Clinicaltrials.gov identifier: NCT03727464.

Abstract
Acquired prosopagnosia is usually a consequence of bilateral or right hemisphere lesions and is often associated with topographical disorientation and dyschromatopsia. Left temporo-occipital lesions sometimes result in a face recognition disorder but in a context of visual object agnosia with spared familiarity feelings for faces, usually in left-handers. We describe a patient with a left temporo-occipital hemorrhagic lesion unexpectedly resulting in a deficit of face familiarity, which could represent a mild form of associative prosopagnosia. Our patient failed to feel familiarity feelings even with very well-known famous faces but had neither visual object agnosia nor defects with semantics or naming of celebrities. This was confirmed even when the patient was re-tested a year later. We speculate that a graded lateralization of face processing could be at the basis of occasional cases of prosopagnosia.

Abstract
In 2018, the SINch (Italian Society of Neurosurgery) Neuro-Oncology Section, AINO (Italian Association of Neuro-Oncology) and SIN (Italian Association of Neurology) Neuro-Oncology Section formed a collaborative Task Force to look at the diagnosis and treatment of low-grade gliomas (LGGs). The Task Force included neurologists, neurosurgeons, neuro-oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, a neuropsychologist and a methodologist. For operational purposes, the Task Force was divided into five Working Groups: diagnosis, surgical treatment, adjuvant treatments, supportive therapies, and follow-up. The resulting guidance document is based on the available evidence and provides recommendations on diagnosis and treatment of LGG patients, considering all aspects of patient care along their disease trajectory.

Abstract
Emotion processing impairment is a common non-motor symptom in Parkinson's Disease (PD). Previous literature reported conflicting results concerning, in particular, the performance for different emotions, the relation with cognitive and neuropsychiatric symptoms and the affected stage of processing. This study aims at assessing emotion recognition and discrimination in PD. Recognition of six facial expressions was studied in order to clarify its relationship with motor, cognitive and neuropsychiatric symptoms. Sensitivity in discriminating happy and fearful faces was investigated to address controversial findings on impairment in early stages of emotion processing. To do so, seventy PD patients were tested with the Ekman 60 Faces test and compared with 46 neurologically unimpaired participants. Patients' performances were correlated with clinical scales and neuropsychological tests. A subsample of 25 PD patients and 25 control participants were also tested with a backward masking paradigm for sensitivity in happiness and fear discrimination. Results showed that PD patients were impaired in facial emotion recognition, especially for fearful expressions. The performance correlated with perceptual, executive and general cognitive abilities, but facial expression recognition deficits were present even in cognitively unimpaired patients. In contrast, patients' sensitivity in backward masking tasks was not reduced as compared to controls. Taken together our data demonstrate that facial emotion recognition, and fear expression in particular, is critically affected by neurodegeneration in PD and related to cognitive abilities; however, it appears before other cognitive impairments. Preserved performances in discriminating shortly presented facial expressions, suggest unimpaired early stages of emotion processing.

Abstract
PURPOSE Awake surgery is an established technique for resection of low-grade gliomas, while its possible benefit for resection of high-grade gliomas (HGGs) needs further confirmations. This retrospective study aims to compare overall survival, extent of resection (EOR) and cognitive outcome in two groups of HGGs patients submitted to asleep or awake surgery. METHODS Thirty-three patients submitted to Gross Total Resection of contrast-enhancing area of HGGs were divided in two homogeneous groups: awake (AWg; N = 16) and asleep surgery (ASg; N = 17). All patients underwent to an extensive neuropsychological assessment before surgery (time_1), 1-week (time_2) and 4-months (time_3) after surgery. We performed analyses to assess differences in cognitive performances between groups, cognitive outcomes in each group and EOR. A comparison of overall survival (OS) between the two groups was conducted. RESULTS Statistical analyses showed no differences between groups at time_2 and time_3 in each cognitive domain, excluding selective attention that resulted higher in the AWg before surgery. Regarding cognitive outcomes, we found a reversible worsening of memory and constructional praxis, and a significant recovery at time_3, similar for both groups. Assessment of time_3 in respect to time_1 never showed differences (all ps > .074). Moreover we found a significant lower level of tumor infiltration after surgery for AWg (p < .05), with an influence on OS (p < .05). Indeed, patients of AWg showed a significant longer OS in comparison to those in the ASg (p < .01). This result was confirmed even considering only wildtype Glioblastoma (p < .05). CONCLUSION These results indicate that awake surgery, and in general a supra-total resection of enhancing area, can improve OS in HGGs patients, preserving neuro-cognitive profile and quality of life.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Verbs and nouns can be selectively impaired, suggesting that they are processed, at least in part, by distinct neural structures. While several tests of object naming are available, tasks involving action verb naming with normative data are lacking. We report the construction and standardization of a new test for the assessment of picture naming of actions. MATERIAL AND METHODS The test includes 50 stimuli, strictly controlled for several confounding variables. Normative data on 290 Italian subjects pooled across homogenous subgroups for age, sex, and education are reported. RESULTS Multiple regression analyses revealed that age and education significantly correlated with the subject's score. In particular, increasing age negatively affected performance, while the performance increased with a higher education. CONCLUSIONS In the clinical practice, the availability of equivalent scores will help the comparison with performance in the picture naming of objects. This test allows investigating action naming deficits in aphasic patients, in Parkinson's disease patients and in further neurodegenerative disorders, in which a specific impairment of action verbs is expected, filling a gap in the clinical neuropsychological assessment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Within the large topic of naming disorders, an important and separated chapter belongs to proper names. Defects of proper naming could be a selective linguistic problem. Sometimes, it includes names belonging to various kinds of semantically unique entities, but other times, it has been observed for famous people proper names only. According to Bruce and Young's model, different stages allow to recognize, identify, and name famous people from their faces and voices, subsuming different anatomical pathways, both in right temporal lobe, and their different efficiency in this task. The present study aimed to report the normative data concerning the naming of the same famous people from voice and face. SUBJECTS AND METHODS One hundred fifty-three normal subjects underwent a test in which they were requested to name famous people from their face and from their voice. The stimuli belonged to the previously published Famous People Recognition Battery. RESULTS The mean percentage score on naming from face was 84.42 ± 12.03% (range 55.26-100%) and the mean percentage score on naming from voice was 66.04 ± 16.81% (range 28.13-100%). The difference observed in performance by face and by voice resulted significant (t|153 = 15.973; p < 0.001). Regression analyses showed that the percentage score obtained on naming from faces was predicted by education, whereas naming from voice was predicted by education and gender. DISCUSSION Naming from voice is more difficult than from face, confirming a different difficulty of the two tasks. Education showed high predicting value for faces and less for voices, whereas gender contributed to predict results only for voices.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Neuromodulation of regions involved in food processing is increasingly used in studies on eating behaviors, but results are controversial. We assessed the effects of anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (a-tDCS) on food and body implicit preferences in patients with eating disorders (EDs). METHOD Thirty-six ED patients and 36 healthy females completed three sessions with a-tDCS applied to the medial-prefrontal cortex (mPFC), the right extrastriate body area (rEBA) or in sham mode. Each participant then completed three Implicit Association Tests (IATs) on tasty/tasteless food, underweight/overweight body images, flowers versus insects as control. Differences in latency between incongruent and congruent blocks were calculated (D score). RESULTS The tDCS by group interaction was significant for the IAT-food D score, with patients showing weaker preference for tasty food than controls in sham, but not a-tDCS sessions. In particular, rEBA stimulation significantly increased patients' D score compared to sham. Moreover, a-tDCS over mPFC and rEBA selectively increased patients' reaction times in the incongruent blocks of the IAT-food. DISCUSSION A-tDCS on frontal and occipito-temporal cortices modulated food preferences in ED patients. The effect was specific for food images and selective in patients, but not in healthy participants. These findings suggest that neuromodulation of these regions could affect implicit food attitudes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND
The postoperative outcomes and the predictors of seizure control are poorly studied for supratentorial cavernous angiomas (CA) within or close to the eloquent brain area.
OBJECTIVE
To assess the predictors of preoperative seizure control, postoperative seizure control, and postoperative ability to work, and the safety of the surgery.
METHODS
Multicenter international retrospective cohort analysis of adult patients benefitting from a functional-based surgical resection with intraoperative functional brain mapping for a supratentorial CA within or close to eloquent brain areas.
RESULTS
A total of 109 patients (66.1% women; mean age 38.4 ± 12.5 yr), were studied. Age >38 yr (odds ratio [OR], 7.33; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.53-35.19; P = .013) and time to surgery > 12 mo (OR, 18.21; 95% CI, 1.11-296.55; P = .042) are independent predictors of uncontrolled seizures at the time of surgery. Focal deficit (OR, 10.25; 95% CI, 3.16-33.28; P < .001) is an independent predictor of inability to work at the time of surgery. History of epileptic seizures at the time of surgery (OR, 7.61; 95% CI, 1.67-85.42; P = .003) and partial resection of the CA and/or of the hemosiderin rim (OR, 12.02; 95% CI, 3.01-48.13; P < .001) are independent predictors of uncontrolled seizures postoperatively. Inability to work at the time of surgery (OR, 19.54; 95% CI, 1.90-425.48; P = .050), Karnofsky Performance Status ≤ 70 (OR, 51.20; 95% CI, 1.20-2175.37; P = .039), uncontrolled seizures postoperatively (OR, 105.33; 95% CI, 4.32-2566.27; P = .004), and worsening of cognitive functions postoperatively (OR, 13.71; 95% CI, 1.06-176.66; P = .045) are independent predictors of inability to work postoperatively.
CONCLUSION
The functional-based resection using intraoperative functional brain mapping allows safe resection of CA and the peripheral hemosiderin rim located within or close to eloquent brain areas.

Abstract
PURPOSE The practical management of cavernous angioma located within eloquent brain area before, during and after surgical resection is poorly documented. We assessed the practical pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative management of cavernous angioma located within eloquent brain area. METHOD An online survey composed of 61 items was sent to 26 centers to establish a multicenter international retrospective cohort of adult patients who underwent a surgical resection as the first-line treatment of a supratentorial cavernous angioma located within or close to eloquent brain area. RESULTS 272 patients from 19 centers (mean 13.6 ± 16.7 per center) from eight countries were included. The pre-operative management varied significantly between centers and countries regarding the pre-operative functional assessment, the pre-operative epileptological assessment, the first given antiepileptic drug, and the time to surgery. The intra-operative environment varied significantly between centers and countries regarding the use of imaging systems, the use of functional mapping with direct electrostimulations, the extent of resection of the hemosiderin rim, the realization of a post-operative functional assessment, and the time to post-operative functional assessment. The present survey found a post-operative improvement, as compared to pre-operative evaluations, of the functional status, the ability to work, and the seizure control. CONCLUSIONS We observed a variety of practice between centers and countries regarding the management of cavernous angioma located within eloquent regions. Multicentric prospective studies are required to solve relevant questions regarding the management of cavernous angioma-related seizures, the timing of surgery, and the optimal extent of hemosiderin rim resection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Conscious perception of external stimuli has been related to recurrent activity in distributed cortical networks, although brain mechanisms controlling unconscious processing and stimuli access to conscious report need to be clarified. OBJECTIVE This study aims at investigating modulations in cortical excitability related to conscious perception and unconscious processing of face stimuli with different visibility levels. METHODS We used TMS-EEG over the right occipital face area (rOFA), or the right premotor cortex (rPMC) as control site, to measure cortical excitability during a backward masking paradigm with individually defined stimuli visibility. RESULTS Event related potentials showed significant differences for faces compared to houses, and detected faces compared to missed ones, 200 ms post target onset. TMS over rOFA, but not over rPMC, triggered a relative positivity starting 150 ms post target when faces with high visibility were consciously reported. Moreover, rOFA TMS evoked differential responses for high versus low visible faces in conscious and unconscious processing at 290-390 and 180-240 ms, respectively. CONCLUSION Results unveiled a causal link between rOFA excitability and late responses related to access to conscious perception, suggesting a critical role of recurrent activity, but distinct components, for consciously perceived stimuli and unconscious face processing.

Abstract
Deaf individuals may compensate for the lack of the auditory input by showing enhanced capacities in certain visual tasks. Here we assessed whether this also applies to recognition of emotions expressed by bodily and facial cues. In Experiment 1, we compared deaf participants and hearing controls in a task measuring recognition of the six basic emotions expressed by actors in a series of video-clips in which either the face, the body, or both the face and body were visible. In Experiment 2, we measured the weight of body and face cues in conveying emotional information when intense genuine emotions are expressed, a situation in which face expressions alone may have ambiguous valence. We found that deaf individuals were better at identifying disgust and fear from body cues (Experiment 1) and in integrating face and body cues in case of intense negative genuine emotions (Experiment 2). Our findings support the capacity of deaf individuals to compensate for the lack of the auditory input enhancing perceptual and attentional capacities in the spared modalities, showing that this capacity extends to the affective domain.
