Abstract
The excited states of unstable ^{20}O were investigated via γ-ray spectroscopy following the ^{19}O(d,p)^{20}O reaction at 8 AMeV. By exploiting the Doppler shift attenuation method, the lifetimes of the 2_{2}^{+} and 3_{1}^{+} states were firmly established. From the γ-ray branching and E2/M1 mixing ratios for transitions deexciting the 2_{2}^{+} and 3_{1}^{+} states, the B(E2) and B(M1) were determined. Various chiral effective field theory Hamiltonians, describing the nuclear properties beyond ground states, along with a standard USDB interaction, were compared with the experimentally obtained data. Such a comparison for a large set of γ-ray transition probabilities with the valence space in medium similarity renormalization group ab initio calculations was performed for the first time in a nucleus far from stability. It was shown that the ab initio approaches using chiral effective field theory forces are challenged by detailed high-precision spectroscopic properties of nuclei. The reduced transition probabilities were found to be a very constraining test of the performance of the ab initio models.

Abstract
AIMS Our study aimed to (1) identify trajectories on different mental health components during a two-year follow-up of the COVID-19 pandemic and contextualise them according to pandemic periods; (2) investigate the associations between mental health trajectories and several exposures, and determine whether there were differences among the different mental health outcomes regarding these associations. METHODS We included 5535 healthy individuals, aged 40-65 years old, from the Barcelona Brain Health Initiative (BBHI). Growth mixture models (GMM) were fitted to classify individuals into different trajectories for three mental health-related outcomes (psychological distress, personal growth and loneliness). Moreover, we fitted a multinomial regression model for each outcome considering class membership as the independent variable to assess the association with the predictors. RESULTS For the outcomes studied we identified three latent trajectories, differentiating two major trends, a large proportion of participants was classified into 'resilient' trajectories, and a smaller proportion into 'chronic-worsening' trajectories. For the former, we observed a lower susceptibility to the changes, whereas, for the latter, we noticed greater heterogeneity and susceptibility to different periods of the pandemic. From the multinomial regression models, we found global and cognitive health, and coping strategies as common protective factors among the studied mental health components. Nevertheless, some differences were found regarding the risk factors. Living alone was only significant for those classified into 'chronic' trajectories of loneliness, but not for the other outcomes. Similarly, secondary or higher education was only a risk factor for the 'worsening' trajectory of personal growth. Finally, smoking and sleeping problems were risk factors which were associated with the 'chronic' trajectory of psychological distress. CONCLUSIONS Our results support heterogeneity in reactions to the pandemic and the need to study different mental health-related components over a longer follow-up period, as each one evolves differently depending on the pandemic period. In addition, the understanding of modifiable protective and risk factors associated with these trajectories would allow the characterisation of these segments of the population to create targeted interventions.

Abstract
The effects of high hydrostatic pressure on the constituents and coagulation ability and their effect on cheese production of sheep milk have not been studied in detail. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of high hydrostatic pressure processing on the coagulation kinetics and physicochemical properties of sheep milk and to explore how such treatment could improve the cheesemaking process. Five batches of milk were tested: 1 untreated control batch and 4 batches each subjected to a different pressure (150, 300, 450, or 600 MPa) for 5 min at 10°C. As treatment pressure increased, values of electrical conductivity and oxidation-reduction potential were found to decrease. However, no significant reduction in pH was recorded. Treatment pressures >300 MPa produced milk with lower lightness (luminosity) and a more yellow and green hue. Pressures >150 MPa resulted in micellar fragmentation, as well as significant increases in particle size, viscosity, and water-holding capacity as a consequence of the denaturing of soluble proteins. High-pressure treatments increased the solubility of colloidal calcium phosphate, leading to a considerable increase in the concentration of minerals in the serum phase. The highest concentrations of calcium and phosphorus in the rennet whey of milk were reached at 300 MPa. Curd coagulation time was reduced by 28% at pressures >300 MPa, and an increase in the curd firming rate was observed. As treatment pressure increased to 450 MPa, the firmness, elasticity, and the percentage creep recovery of gels increased, whereas values of compliance and fracture strain were reduced. Thus, we can conclude that 300 MPa is the optimum treatment pressure for milk intended for cheesemaking by enzymatic coagulation. This pressure produced milk with optimal coagulation kinetics and water-holding properties with the least loss of fat and protein to the whey.

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to describe and compare recovery status after official basketball competition in players who underwent NESA neuromodulation treatment (NNT) in weeks with one or two matches. The recovery parameters of 12 professional male basketball players (mean ± SD, age: 20.6 ± 2.7 yr; height: 197.8 ± 11.7 cm; and body mass: 89.0 ± 21.2 kg) that competed in the LEB Plata (Spanish third division) were monitored 2 days after match-play over 6 weeks, and included: 1) the Hooper Test, which combines four subjective variables (sleep, stress, fatigue and soreness); 2) common biochemical markers (e.g., testosterone, cortisol and ratio T:C); and 3) lowest heart rate [HR], average HR, HR variability, sleep duration, awake time during night and onset latency before asleep). Players that completed NNT presented differences compared to the control group in sleep data. For instance, the lowest HR (p < 0.001), average HR (p < 0.001) and total awake time (p = 0.04) were significantly reduced in the NNT group. On the contrary, the control group presented greater values than the NNT group in the subjective Hooper Test, although only stress presented significant differences (Control 2.5 ± 1.2 vs. NNT cost or 3.2 ± 0.9; p = 0.01). Additionally, there were no significant differences in recovery parameters between weeks with one or two matches. In conclusion, the results suggest that players that underwent NNT tended to improve their sleep quality. Nevertheless, player's values in the biochemical markers and wellness status remained similar in both groups. The fact that no significant differences were found between weeks with one or two matches could help basketball professionals to determine that a congested schedule does not seem to negatively alter recovery status. Abstract
Effective conservation actions to counteract the current decline of populations and species require a deep knowledge on their genetic structure. We used Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) to infer the population structure of the highly threatened freshwater pearl mussel Margaritifera margaritifera in the Iberian Peninsula. A total of 130 individuals were collected from 26 locations belonging to 16 basins. We obtained 31,692 SNPs through Genotyping by Sequencing (GBS) and used this dataset to infer population structure. Genetic diversity given as observed heterozygosity was low. Pairwise FST comparisons revealed low levels of genetic differentiation among geographically close populations. Up to 3 major genetic lineages were determined: Atlantic, Cantabrian and Douro. This structure suggests a close co-evolutionary process with brown trout (Salmo trutta), the primordial fish host of this mussel in the studied area. Some sub-basins showed some genetic structuring, whereas in others no intrapopulation differentiation was found. Our results confirm that genetic conservation units do not match individual basins, and that knowledge about the genetic structure is necessary before planning recovery plans that may involve relocation or restocking. The same reasoning should be applied to strictly freshwater species that are sessile or have restricted dispersal abilities and are currently imperiled worldwide.

Abstract
This article presents several design techniques to fabricate micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) using standard complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) processes. They were applied to fabricate high yield CMOS-MEMS shielded Lorentz-force magnetometers (LFM). The multilayered metals and oxides of the back-end-of-line (BEOL), normally used for electronic routing, comprise the structural part of the MEMS. The most important fabrication challenges, modeling approaches and design solutions are discussed. Equations that predict the Q factor, sensitivity, Brownian noise and resonant frequency as a function of temperature, gas pressure and design parameters are presented and validated in characterization tests. A number of the fabricated magnetometers were packaged into Quad Flat No-leads (QFN) packages. We show this process can achieve yields above 95 % when the proper design techniques are adopted. Despite CMOS not being a process for MEMS manufacturing, estimated performance (sensitivity and noise level) is similar or superior to current commercial magnetometers and others built with MEMS processes. Additionally, typical offsets present in Lorentz-force magnetometers were prevented with a shielding electrode, whose efficiency is quantified. Finally, several reliability test results are presented, which demonstrate the robustness against high temperatures, magnetic fields and acceleration shocks.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Uveal melanoma is the most common primary malignant intraocular tumour in the adult population, with a survival rate of 50% despite advances in treatment and knowledge of this disease. The presence of extraocular extension (EE) worsens the prognosis of these patients, so its proper identification can ensure its management and early intervention. Ophthalmological ultrasound is the technique of choice for the diagnosis and follow-up of these patients, both of the anterior EE using ultrasonic biomicroscopy (UBM), and the posterior EE using A and B ultrasound. The aim of this study is to describe the ultrasound characteristics of the BMU and the A and B ultrasound. MATERIAL AND METHODS A descriptive and retrospective study is carried out on patients diagnosed with uveal melanoma (UM) and EE from 2003 to 2019. The ultrasound characteristics of the local disease and the follow-up after treatment were recorded completely and at each visit. In the case of anterior EE, photographs of the anterior segment and UBM were taken, while those involving the posterior segment were explored under A and B mode ultrasound. All enucleated eyes were sent for anatomopathological study. RESULTS Ten patients with an average age of 72.3 years were included. The largest proportion of them were medium-sized tumours, followed by large and small ones. The most frequent morphology of the primary tumour was cupuliform. All the EE presented lower internal reflectivity compared to the primary tumour. No trans-scleral connection bridges were found between the primary tumour and the EE in the ultrasound studies. 50% of patients underwent primary enucleation at the time of diagnosis of intraocular MU due to the presence of the EE, and the remaining 50% presented the EE after initial treatment of the primary tumour with I125 brachytherapy. Sixty percent of the patients presented with posterior EE, and were therefore diagnosed with ultrasound A and B. The most frequent histopathological pattern with 87.5% of patients was the epithelioid pattern. DISCUSSION Ultrasound scanning in patients with MU is mandatory for diagnosis and follow-up of EE. BMU and A and B ultrasound are the test of choice for anterior and posterior EE, respectively. EE have particular ultrasound characteristics such as low internal reflectivity, regularity of their contour and their location usually adjacent to the base of the primary intraocular tumor.

Abstract
Deficits in social cognition and metacognition impact the course of psychosis. Sex differences in social cognition and metacognition could explain heterogeneity in psychosis. 174 (58 females) patients with first-episode psychosis completed a clinical, neuropsychological, social cognitive, and metacognitive assessment. Subsequent latent profile analysis split by sex yielded two clusters common to both sexes (a Homogeneous group, 53% and 79.3%, and an Indecisive group, 18.3% and 8.6% of males and females, respectively), a specific male profile characterized by presenting jumping to conclusions (28.7%) and a specific female profile characterized by cognitive biases (12.1%). Males and females in the homogeneous profile seem to have a more benign course of illness. Males with jumping to conclusions had more clinical symptoms and more neuropsychological deficits. Females with cognitive biases were younger and had lower self-esteem. These results suggest that males and females may benefit from specific targeted treatment and highlights the need to consider sex when planning interventions.

Abstract
Subjects with first-episode psychosis experience substantial deficits in social cognition and metacognition. Although previous studies have investigated the role of profiles of individuals in social cognition and metacognition in chronic schizophrenia, profiling subjects with first-episode psychosis in both domains remains to be investigated. We used latent profile analysis to derive profiles of the abilities in 174 persons with first-episode psychosis using the Beck's Cognitive Insight Scale, the Faces Test, the Hinting Task, the Internal, Personal and Situational Attributions Questionnaire, and the Beads Task. Participants received a clinical assessment and a neuropsychological assessment. The best-fitting model was selected according to the Bayesian information criterion (BIC). We assessed the importance of the variables via a classification tree (CART). We derived three clusters with distinct profiles. The first profile (33.3%) comprised individuals with low social cognition. The second profile (60.9%) comprised individuals that had more proneness to present jumping to conclusions. The third profile (5.7%) presented a heterogeneous profile of metacognitive deficits. Persons with lower social cognition presented worse clinical and neuropsychological features than cluster 2 and cluster 3. Cluster 3 presented significantly worst functioning. Our results suggest that individuals with FEP present distinct profiles that concur with specific clinical, neuropsychological, and functional challenges. Each subgroup may benefit from different interventions.

Abstract
Background:The most common complication in patients with SLE is infection, and its clinical presentation is often indistinguishable from SLE flares. Therefore, laboratory ratios have been evaluated to differentiate between those events. Among them, ESR/CRP1, neutrophil/lymphocyte (NLR)2, and platelet/lymphocyte (PLR)3 ratios have been previously assessed with acceptable performance; however, there is no validation of those ratios in our SLE population.Objectives:To examine the predictive capacity of infection of the lymphocyte/C4 (LC4R), lymphocyte/C3 (LC3R), and ferritin/ESR (FER) ratios in SLE patients, and to evaluate the performance of ESR/CRP, NLR, AND PLR ratios in our SLE population.Methods:We conducted a cross-sectional study of SLE patients admitted to the emergency service at Hospital San Vicente Fundación (HSVF). The HSVF ethics committee approved the execution of the project.Patients were categorized into four groups according to the main cause of hospitalization: (1) infection, (2) flare, (3) infection and flare and, (4) neither infection nor flare.We calculated the median values of the ratios and their respective interquartile ranges for each group. Then, we compared those summary measures using the Kruskal-Wallis test. Subsequently, we assessed the predictive capacity of infection of each ratio using ROC curve. Finally, we carried out a logistic regression model.Results:A total of 246 patients were included, among them 90.7% were women. The median age was 28 years (IQR: 20-35 years). Regarding the outcomes, 37.0% of the patients had flares, 30.9% had neither infection nor flare, 16.7% had an infection and, 15.5% had simultaneously infection and flare. When compared the four groups, statistical significance (p<0.05) was observed. Area under the ROC curve (AUC) for infection prediction was as follows: 0.752 (sensitivity 60.5%, specificity 80.5%) for LC4R, 0.740 (sensitivity 73.2%, specificity 68.3%) for FER, 0.731 (sensitivity 77.6%, specificity 80.5%) for LC3R.In the logistic regression modeling, we observed that an increase in the risk of infection was associated with an LC4R below 66.7 (OR: 6.3, CI: 2.7 – 14.3, p <0.0001), a FER greater than 13.6 (OR: 5.9, CI: 2.8 – 12.1, p <0.0001) and an LC3R below 11.2 (OR: 4.9, CI: 2.4 – 9.8, p <0.0001).The ESR/CRP and PLR performed poorly with an AUC of 0.580 and 0.655, respectively. In contrast, the NLR showed better performance (AUC of 0.709, with a sensitivity of 80.2% and specificity of 55.7%).Figure 1.ROC curves of the evaluated ratiosConclusion:These laboratory ratios could be easy to assay and inexpensive biomarkers to differentiate between infection and activity in SLE patients. The LC4R, FER, and LC3R have a significant diagnostic performance for detecting infection among SLE patients. Abstract
The aim of this research was to study changes in the microbial populations, free AA profile, biogenic amine content, and sensory characteristics of ripened cheeses (100 and 180 d) produced in different seasons (summer, autumn, winter, and spring) from pasteurized sheep milk from 8 commercial flocks fed hay or silage diets. Twenty-one individual AA and 6 biogenic amines were determined by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography. Type of conserved forage for sheep feeding did not affect the variables studied, which is of great interest because hay and silage are low-cost ingredients for sheep feeding. Proteolysis led total free AA concentrations ranging between 35,179.26 and 138,063.71 mg/kg of cheese at 180 d of ripening. γ-Aminobutyric acid, which has been associated with beneficial effects on human health, was the second most abundant AA in all cheese samples, accounting for 15% of total free AA. Spring cheeses showed 2-fold higher concentrations of γ-aminobutyric acid than summer and autumn cheeses at the end of ripening. Overall, spring, winter, and autumn cheeses had lower average concentration of biogenic amines (431.99 mg/kg of cheese) than summer cheeses (825.70 mg/kg of cheese) as well as better sensory characteristics. Therefore, this study could provide the dairy industry with useful information for producing cheeses with valuable nutritional and sensory quality for consumers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Laparoscopic liver resections (LLR) have been increasingly performed in recent years. Most of the available evidence, however, comes from specialized centers in Asia, Europe and USA. Data from South America are limited and based on single-center experiences. To date, no multicenter studies evaluated the results of LLR in South America. The aim of this study was to evaluate the experience and results with LLR in South American centers. METHODS From February to November 2019, a survey about LLR was conducted in 61 hepatobiliary centers in South America, composed by 20 questions concerning demographic characteristics, surgical data, and perioperative results. RESULTS Fifty-one (83.6%) centers from seven different countries answered the survey. A total of 2887 LLR were performed, as follows: Argentina (928), Brazil (1326), Chile (322), Colombia (210), Paraguay (9), Peru (75), and Uruguay (8). The first program began in 1997; however, the majority (60.7%) started after 2010. The percentage of LLR over open resections was 28.4% (4.4-84%). Of the total, 76.5% were minor hepatectomies and 23.5% major, including 266 right hepatectomies and 343 left hepatectomies. The conversion rate was 9.7%, overall morbidity 13%, and mortality 0.7%. CONCLUSIONS This is the largest study assessing the dissemination and results of LLR in South America. It showed an increasing number of centers performing LLR with the promising perioperative results, aligned with other worldwide excellence centers.

Abstract
The emergent coronavirus, designated severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), is a zoonotic pathogen that has demonstrated remarkable transmissibility in the human population and is the etiological agent of a current global pandemic called COVID-191. We measured the dynamic (short-term) aerosol efficiencies of SARS-CoV-2 and compared the efficiencies with two other emerging coronaviruses, SARS-CoV (emerged in 2002) and Middle Eastern respiratory syndrome CoV (MERS-CoV; emerged starting in 2012). Abstract
People can regulate negative emotional states using personal episodic information stored in memory. However, amongst older adults, assistance in retrieving personal memories might be needed. As such, positive personal images might better facilitate the retrieval of positive personal memories, relative to generic positive images. The present study induced older adults (N = 40; Mage = 76.28) into a negative mood state using a validated film clip ("Dead Man Walking"; Robbins et al. in Dead Man Walking [Cinta Cinematográfica]. PolyGram Filmed Entertainment, Working Title Films, Estados Unidos, 1995). Participants were then shown positive personal images (album photos) or positive non-personal images from the International Affective Picture System (IAPS) and between-group differences in their mood state and their ability to retrieve positive autobiographical memories were measured. Although participants' moods decreased after the negative mood induction, their mood then recovered after picture cuing regardless of whether images were personal or non-personal. Furthermore, the positive mood evoked by non-personal, but not personal, images was significantly positively associated with self-reported feelings of reliving of the memories evoked by those images. These results suggest that, when pictures from personal life are not available, the selection of images able to generate positive autobiographical memories with a sense of reliving, is a feasible tool for older adult's emotional regulation.

Abstract
The high nutritional value of sheep milk can be advantageous in the manufacture of cheese, and fat plays an important role in sheep cheese properties. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of feeding common hay or silage diets used in commercial farms on the nutritional value of sheep cheese fat. We also monitored the effect of cheese ripening period on the fatty acid profile. Cheeses were produced from milk of sheep fed hay and silage diets from 8 farms, on 4 separate occasions (February, May, August, and November) over a 1-yr period. Eighty-four individual fatty acids were determined and identified by gas chromatography. Ripening time (100 and 180 d) significantly reduced moisture, acidity, and water activity of cheeses but did not affect the fatty acid content. However, hay feeding, compared with silage feeding, led to cheeses with 1.5- and 1.3-fold higher contents of vaccenic acid and conjugated linoleic acid, without detrimental changes in saturated and n-3 (omega-3) fatty acid composition. Hay forages could be a low-cost alternative for producing cheese with a fatty acid profile suitable for human health, which is an aspect of great interest to the food industry.

Abstract
Wines from grapes of Cabernet Sauvignon of the AOC Tarragona were elaborated with supplementation or not of two specific inactivated dry yeasts (Optired® and Optimum Red®; Lallemand Inc.) or with an experimental grape-skin extract. All the wines treated were significantly less astringent than the control wine because both inactivated dry yeast and the skin extract released polysaccharides which probably inhibit interactions between salivary proteins and tannins, and because their presence decrease the proportion of seed tannins and increase the proportion of skin tannins in the final wines.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Renal donation leads to a risk of developing chronic kidney disease, with an incidence of 0.47%. To evaluate for its presence, formulas based on serum creatinine are used, but up to 80% of these formulas underestimate the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) in donors. The aim of this work was to confirm the highest correlation of the GFR as measured with the use of DTPA-Tc99m with the GFR as estimated by means of the formula based on serum cystatin C (CKD-EPI creatinine-cystatin C) in healthy kidney donors. METHODS In this observational, analytic, cross-sectional study, the GFR of kidney donors was determined ≥1 year after donation by means of DTPA gammagram and estimation with the use of conventional formulations and with cystatin C. RESULTS Of 112 donors, 38 (34%) were included, 20 (60%) were female, with an overall average age of 40 years, 36.5 months after donation, and body mass index of 25.5 kg/m2. Correlation with the GFR as measured by means of DTPA gammagram was better with the use of CKD-EPI cystatin C (0.402; P = .020) and CKD-EPI creatinine-cystatin (0.549; P < .001) than the conventional formulas. Linear correlation with serum cystatin C was 0.825 (P < .001; 95% confidence interval, -105.3 to -63.2) for the CKD-EPI cystatin C formula, 0.77 (P < .001; -89.9 to -48.1) for the CKD-EPI creatinine-cystatin formula, and 0.525 (P = .002; -91.1 to -23.2) for DTPA-Tc99m scintigraphy. CONCLUSIONS There is a strong correlation between estimate the GFR by equations based on cystatin C and the measurement of the GFR by DTPA-Tc99m gammagram.

Abstract
Lateral movements of the fingers in Rayleigh-Taylor hydrodynamic instabilities at the interface between two fluids are studied. We show that transverse movements appear when a physical boundary is present; these phenomena have not been explained until now. The boundary prevents one of the fluids from crossing it. Such frontiers can be buoyancy driven as, for example, the frontier to the passage of a less dense solution through a denser solution or when different aggregation states coexist (liquid and gaseous phases). An experimental study of the lateral movement velocity of the fingers was performed for different Rayleigh numbers (Ra), and when oscillations were detected, their amplitudes were studied. Liquid-liquid (L-L) and gas-liquid (G-L) systems were analysed. Aqueous HCl and Bromocresol Green (sodium salt, NaBCG) solutions were used in L-L experiments, and CO2 (gas) and aqueous NaOH, NaHCO3, and CaCl2 solutions were employed for the G-L studies. We observed that the lateral movement of the fingers and finger collapses near the interface are more notorious when Ra increases. The consequences of this, for each experience, are a decrease in the number of fingers and an increase in the velocity of the lateral finger movement close to the interface as time evolves. We found that the amplitude of the oscillations did not vary significantly within the considered Ra range. These results have an important implication when determining the wave number of instabilities in an evolving system. The wave number could be strongly diminished if there is a boundary.

Abstract
DNA nucleobases undergo non-enzymatic glycation to nucleobase adducts which can play important roles in vivo. In this work, we conducted a comprehensive experimental and theoretical kinetic study of the mechanisms of formation of glyoxal-guanine adducts over a wide pH range in order to elucidate the molecular basis for the glycation process. Also, we performed molecular dynamics simulations to investigate how open or cyclic glyoxal-guanine adducts can cause structural changes in an oligonucleotide model. A thermodynamic study of other glycating agents including methylglyoxal, acrolein, crotonaldehyde, 4-hydroxynonenal and 3-deoxyglucosone revealed that, at neutral pH, cyclic adducts were more stable than open adducts; at basic pH, however, the open adducts of 3-deoxyglucosone, methylglyoxal and glyoxal were more stable than their cyclic counterparts. This result can be ascribed to the ability of the adducts to cross-link DNA. The new insights may contribute to improve our understanding of the connection between glycation and DNA cross-linking.

Abstract
CONTEXT Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is impaired in primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) but instruments to specifically assess this are scarce. OBJECTIVE Validate the new disease-specific Primary Hyperparathyroidism Quality of Life (PHPQoL) questionnaire in usual clinical practice. DESIGN Observational, prospective, and multicenter. SETTING Public hospital ambulatory care. PATIENTS Patients with PHPT of both sexes, aged more than or equal to 18 years either initiated treatment for PHPT (group A) or had stable PHPT, not requiring therapy (group B). Patients in group A had at least one surgical criterion according to the 2009 Third International Workshop on Management of Asymptomatic PHPT. INTERVENTION Sociodemographic, clinical, and HRQoL data (PHPQol, Short Form-36, Psychological Well-Being Index, and patients' self-perceived health status) were collected. Group A underwent 4 evaluations (baseline, 3 ± 1, 6 ± 1, and 12 ± 2 months after a therapeutic intervention) and group B 2, at baseline and 1 month later to assess test-retest reliability. RESULTS A total of 182 patients were included (104 group A, 78 group B) with a mean age (SD) of 61.4 (12.1) years; 79.7% were women. Group A increased PHPQoL score (SD) (better HRQoL) (52 ± 23 at baseline; 62 ± 24 at 12 months; P < .001). At baseline, symptomatic patients had a lower PHPQoL score (worse) than asymptomatic ones (51 ± 21 vs 68 ± 21; P < .001). Correlations were seen between PHPQoL and Short Form-36, Psychological Well-Being Index, and self-perceived health status (P < .001). PHPQoL had good internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.80), test-retest reliability (group B, intraclass correlation coefficient > 0.80), and sensitivity to detect HQRoL changes over time. CONCLUSIONS PHPQoL is a valid HRQoL measure to assess the impact of PHPT on health perception in clinical practice.

Abstract
Streams provide ecosystem services to humans that depend on ecosystem functions, such as organic matter breakdown (OMB). OMB can be affected by land use-related disturbance. We measured OMB in 29 low-order streams in a region of contrasting land use in south-west Germany to quantify land use effects on OMB. We deployed fine and coarse mesh leaf bags in streams of forest, agricultural, vinicultural and urban catchments to determine the microbial and invertebrate-mediated OMB, respectively. Furthermore, we monitored physicochemical, geographical and habitat parameters to explain potential differences in OMB among land use types and sites. Only microbial OMB differed between land use types. Microbial OMB was negatively correlated with pH and invertebrate-mediated OMB was positively correlated with tree cover. Generally, OMB responded to stressor gradients rather than directly to land use. Therefore, the monitoring of specific stressors may be more relevant than land use to detect effects on ecosystem functions, and to extrapolate effects on functions, e.g. in the context of assessing ecosystem services.

Abstract
BACKGROUND As future health educators, nursing and physiotherapy students will play an essential role in the prevention of smoking. AIM To determine the prevalence of smoking among students and to analyse their knowledge of and attitudes towards smoking. METHOD This was a descriptive cross-sectional study using an anonymous questionnaire and conducted in a Spanish Faculty of Health Sciences in 2013. FINDINGS 247 nursing and physiotherapy students (82.33%) participated in the study. The global prevalence of smoking (18.2%) was lower compare with the general population group of the same age. We have observed statistical significance in relation to previous studies. Nursing and physiotherapy students showed a low nicotine dependence. We found a lack of knowledge about the harmful effects of cigarette consumption on health. Statistically significant results were also found in relation to degree courses (p < 0.01) as regards students' opinions about their knowledge of strategies and methods to help patients stop smoking. CONCLUSION Most students started smoking before commencing their university studies; consequently, interventions should focus on cessation programmes. An analysis of university curricula leading to the award of a degree in the health sciences could serve to identify educational deficiencies in order to implement the necessary modifications. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING AND HEALTH POLICY This paper presents an update in tobacco use characteristics amongst nursing and physiotherapy students. Those results have showed a need to improve the curricula in order to develop specific programmes to improve knowledge, attitudes and beliefs. Measures to prevent smoking must be taken at school.

Abstract
Metallocarboxypeptidases (MCPs) are zinc-dependent exoproteases that have been for long considered benchmark enzymes, perform a wide range of physiological roles and have been regarded as interesting drug targets. Several crystal structures of MCPs in complex with protein and small molecular weight inhibitors have recently been obtained providing a framework for understanding the binding properties of these ligands. Much of the latest research focused on carboxypeptidase U or thrombin-activable fibrinolysis inhibitor (CPU/TAFI) which has fueled new designs in the field of cardiovascular drugs. Further, new details on the catalytic mechanism of MCPs have emerged from recent crystal structures of covalently modified forms and the pace of investigations on inhibitors has been steadily fastening in the last years. This paper will focus on the latest research carried on metallocarboxypeptidase small molecular weight inhibitors as drug candidates and will give an update of protein inhibitors to emphasize the growing interest for products isolated from natural sources.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyse life-threatening obstetric complications that occurred in public hospitals in Argentina. DESIGN Multicentre collaborative cross-sectional study. SETTING Twenty-five hospitals included in the Perinatal Network of Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area. POPULATION Women giving birth in participating hospitals during a 1-year period. METHODS All cases of severe maternal morbidity (SMM) and maternal mortality (MM) during pregnancy (including miscarriage and induced abortion), labour and puerperium were included. Data were collected prospectively. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Identification criteria, main causes and incidence of SMM; case-fatality rates, morbidity-mortality index and effective intervention's use rate. RESULTS A total of 552 women with life-threatening conditions were identified: 518 with SMM, 34 with MM. Identification criteria for SMM were case-management (48.9%), organ dysfunction (15.2%) and mixed criteria (35.9%). Incidence of SMM was 0.8% (95% confidence interval [95% CI] 0.73-0.87%) and hospital maternal death ratio was 52.3 per 100 000 live births (95% CI 35.5-69.1). Main causes of MM were abortion complications and puerperal sepsis; main causes of SMM were postpartum haemorrhage and hypertension. Overall case-fatality rate was 6.2% (95% CI 4.4-8.6): the highest due to sepsis (14.8%) and abortion complications (13.3%). Morbidity-mortality index was 15:1 (95% CI 7.5-30.8). Use rate of known effective interventions to prevent or treat main causes of MM and SMM was 52.3% (95% CI 46.9-57.7). CONCLUSIONS This study describes the importance of life-threatening obstetric complications that took place in public hospitals with comprehensive obstetric care and the low utilisation of known effective interventions that may decrease rates of SMM and MM. It also provides arguments that justify the need to develop a surveillance system for SMM.

Abstract
European countries are facing increasing pressures on their water resources despite stringent regulations and systematic efforts on environmental protection. In this context, research and innovation play a strategic role reinforcing the efficiency of water policies. The present study provides a multilevel assessment of research and innovation practices in the field of water resource management in southern European countries and regions (more specifically; Cyprus, Albania, Poitou-Charentes in France, Andalusia in Spain and the North of Portugal). The analysis was based on a strategic framework aimed at gaining an insight of the current constraints, as well as of the existing and future technological solutions for a better water resource management. The triple helix model proved to be a useful analytical framework for assessing the efforts of different groups towards a common goal. The analysis proved the existence of a significant evolution in the use of technological tools to assist decision-making processes in integrated river basin management in all regions. Nevertheless, the absence of formal channels for knowledge and data exchange between researchers and water resource managers complicates the formers involvement in the decision-making process regarding water allocation. Both researchers and consultants emphasize the low availability of data, together with the need to advance on water resource economics as relevant constraints in the field. The SWOT analysis showed similar concerns among the participating regions and provided a battery of effective projects that resulted in the preparation of a Joint Action Plan.

Abstract
Density functional theory calculations [CPCM/UM06/6-31+G(d,p)] were used to elucidate the structures and relative stability of Fe(III) complexes with various ligands that inhibit the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) or iron overloaded disease (viz. aminoguanidine, pyridoxamine, LR-74, Amadori compounds, and ascorbic acid). EDTA was used as the free energy reference ligand. The distorted neutral octahedral complex containing one iron atom and three molecules of pyridoxamine [Fe(PM)(3)] was found to be the most stable. The stability of the complexes decreases in the following chelate sequence: pyridoxamine, Amadori complex, aminoguanidine, LR inhibitor, and ascorbic acid.

Abstract
AIMS To study the seasonal variation of Shiga toxin-encoding genes (stx) and to investigate the presence of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) O157 in cattle belonging to five dairy farms from Argentina. METHODS AND RESULTS Rectal swab samples were collected from 360 dairy cows in each season and 115 and 137 calves in autumn and in spring, respectively. The stx were investigated by multiplex PCR and it was used as the indicator for STEC. Samples positives for stx were tested by PCR for eae-gamma1 of E. coli O157 and then subjected to IMS (immunomagnetic separation). In positive animals significant differences in the prevalence of stx between warm and cold seasons were detected. In warm seasons, stx1 + stx2 increased and stx1 decreased, independently of the animal category. The prevalence of STEC O157 in cows and calves were 0.2% and 0.8%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS This work provides new data about the occurrence of stx and STEC O157 in dairy herds from Argentina and suggests a relationship between the type of stx and season of year. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF STUDY The detection of STEC O157 and the seasonality of stx and its types provide an opportunity to improve control strategies designed to prevent contamination of food products and transmission animal-person.

Abstract
An enhanced oxidative stress status has been documented in obese patients and animal models, and a depletion of the antioxidant mechanisms in these conditions is a common feature. Therefore, we have tested the hypothesis that food supplementation with an antioxidant molecule such as vitamin C could prevent fat deposition induced by a high-fat diet in rodents. Ascorbic acid dietary supplementation reduced body weight and the retroperitoneal and subcutaneous fat depots in cafeteria diet-induced obese rats, without affecting food intake. Microarray technology has been applied in rat subcutaneous fat to assess the molecular mechanisms underlying the depletion of fat stores induced by ascorbic acid. Thus, expression of genes involved in cell proliferation, regulation of transcription, and host response are upregulated while a number of genes participating in lipid metabolism, cell adhesion, differentiation, and steroidogenesis (such as steroidogenic acute regulatory protein and hydroxysteroid 11-beta dehydrogenase 2) are downregulated. These data provide new insights to understand that not only calories count in weight gain, but also that the antioxidant status and other mechanisms affecting energy conversion efficiency could participate in energy homeostasis, in which glucocorticoids could be involved.

Abstract
Trypanosoma evansi is the causative agent of equine trypanosomosis, disease that affects horse's productivity and health. Parasitological and molecular methods are mostly used to detect the infection. The aim of this work was evaluate PCR sensitivity to detect T. evansi using the primers 21/22-mer, ITS1, ESAG 6/7 and TBR 1/2 designed from repetitive (multicopies) genomic sequences. The results were compare with two parasitological tests in mice, micro-haematocrite centrifugation technique and direct microscopic examination. The results shows (a) that the minimum amount of DNA from blood of highly parasitaemic mice that was detectable by PCR was 0.001 ng, using the ESAG6/7 and TBR1/2 primer, (b) using TBR1/2 primer for parasites purified could detect 0.000001 ng and (c) in the prepatent period PCR detect the presence of parasites earlier than parasitological techniques. Nevertheless, the percentage of detection for PCR varies depending on primer employed with 60% and 66% for ITS1 and 21/22-mer, and 80% for ESAG6/7 and TBR1/2. Consequently, TBR1/2 and ESAG6/7 were the best primers to monitor T. evansi infections in mice. For epidemiological application, such comparative evaluation should be made for detection of T. evansi in livestock such as horses.

Abstract
Obesity is considered as an inflammatory disease, in which free radical-induced oxidative stress and excessive intake of macronutrients exacerbate their symptoms. In this context, we assessed in rats the possible preventive effect of the supplementation with an antioxidant molecule, ascorbic acid, in order to reduce the adiposity induced by the intake of a high-fat diet. For this purpose, during 56 days, three groups of male Wistar rats were fed on: a) standard pelleted diet, b) Cafeteria diet, c) ascorbate-supplemented (750 mg/kg of body weight) Cafeteria diet. At the end of the experimental period, microarray analysis was used to identify genes transcriptionally induced or repressed by both experimental dietary models (Cafeteria diet supplemented or not with ascorbic acid) in subcutaneous adipose tissue. Dietary ascorbic acid was able to protect against high fat diet effects, reducing the increase of body weight, total body fat and enlargement of different adipose depots induced by the Cafeteria diet without affecting food intake. An association analysis accurately and differentially allowed the detection of gene expression changes related with adiposity and insulin resistance. The genes that more strongly correlated with body fat and HOMA insulin resistance index were involved in adipocyte differentiation, lipid and glucocorticoid metabolism, cell cycle regulation, as well as in several insulin-induced processes. Some other transcripts are regulated by the vitamin C-mediated reduction of adiposity, such as genes that participate in glucocorticoid metabolism, adipogenesis, pentose phosphate pathway, or tricarboxylic acid cycle. This strategy was able to link variations in adipose tissue gene expression with markers of diet-induced obesity in rats, such as insulin resistance and body fat content.

Abstract
Aortopulmonary fistulas secondary to thoracic aneurysms are difficult to diagnose and few cases are reported in the literature. We describe the case of a patient first admitted to another hospital with a diagnosis of right upper lobe pneumonia. After the patient had been a week in hospital without improving, a computed tomography scan of the chest revealed a saccular aneurysm of the aortic arch measuring 9 cm at its widest diameter. Hemodynamics and respiratory signs deteriorated a few hours after transfer to our hospital. Physical examination revealed a systolic murmur and poor peripheral perfusion. The patient was intubated and inotropic support was provided. Upon insertion of a Swan-Ganz catheter, given suspicion of septic shock, progressive elevation of mixed venous oxygen saturation was observed. Measurement of venous oxygen saturation was 74% in the right atrium and 93% in the pulmonary artery. Left-right shunt was diagnosed and an emergency aortography revealed the aortopulmonary fistula. Emergency surgery was performed with the patient in deep hypothermia and cardiocirculatory arrest. There were no adverse events, and postoperative recovery and clinical course were good.
