Abstract
The present study is the first report of some representative innate immune genes in meagre (Argyrosomus regius) larvae. This study has specifically focused on the growth period from hatching to the juvenile stage, a critical time in marine fish development when reliance on innate immune mechanisms are required for survival. We report molecular cloning of partial open reading frames and expression patterns for some innate immune genes (c3, cox2, met, lyzc, mxp, myd88, nod2, nod3). In addition, phylogenetic analyses of some of the sequences obtained was performed where confusion among closely allied isoforms may have existed. These results show the met isoform from meagre is met II, an isoform more similar to a homolog described in Larimichthys crocea; lysozyme (lyzc) corresponds to the c-type and NOD isoforms (nod2, nod3) separate into different clades confirming their distinctness within a common evolutionary history. Gene expression profiles of innate genes were investigated, for nine developmental stages, from 8 days post-hatching (dph) to 120 dph. Present results demonstrated that c3, cox2, met II, lyzc, mxp, myd88, nod2, and nod3 were expressed in all stages of larval development and displayed distinct expression profiles in separate tissues (kidney, spleen gut and gill). Moreover, expression patterns suggested theses innate immune genes may be influenced by feeding practices, i.e. switching from live prey (rotifer and Artemia) and weaning onto an inert commercial diet. In addition to evaluating changes in gene expression during early development, this study evaluated the modulation of gene expression by means of in vivo trials in juveniles that were stimulated with PAMPs (LPS, poly I:C, β-glucan). These results revealed significant changes in mRNA levels of target genes in the kidney, spleen, gut and gills. However, expression profiles differed in magnitude depending on the stimulant and/or tissue. These results are discussed in terms of their relevance and potential application in aquaculture practices.

Abstract
This study investigates the development of lymphoid organs and mucosal tissues in larval and juvenile meagre, Argyrosomus regius. For this purpose, meagre larvae were reared from hatch to the juvenile stage, under mesocosm conditions at 18-19 °C, using standard feeding sequences with live prey and artificial food. The kidney was evident upon hatch and included a visible pronephros, with undifferentiated stem cells and excretory tubules at 1 dph (3.15 ± 0.1 mm SL). The thymus was first detected 8 dph (4.49 ± 0.39 mm SL) and was clearly visible 12 dph (5.69 ± 0.76 mm SL), 33 dph (15.69 ± 1.81 mm SL) an outer thymocytic zone and inner epithelial zone were visible. The spleen was present 12 dph, located between exocrine pancreas and intestine and by 26 dph (11.84 ± 1.3 mm SL) consisted of a mass of sinusoids filled with red blood cells. Melanomacrophage centers were found 83 dph (66.25 ± 4.35 mm SL) in the spleen. Between 14-15 dph (6.9 ± 1.1 mm SL), goblet and rodlet cells appear in the gill and intestinal epithelium. The lymphoid organs, which appear in the order of pronephric kidney (1 dph), thymus (8 dph) and spleen (12 dph) remarkably increase in size during the post-flexion stage. While functional studies are needed to confirm the activity of the immune response, the morphology of the lymphoid organs suggest that meagre is not immuno-competent until 83 dph.

Abstract
Type I interferons (IFN) play an important role in anti-viral responses. In teleost fish multiple genes exist, that are classified by group/subgroup. That multiple subgroups are present in Acanthopterygian fish has only become apparent recently, and 3 subgroups are now known to be expressed, including a new subgroup termed IFNh. However, the potential to express multiple IFN subgroups and their interplay is not well defined. Hence this study aims to clarify the situation and undertook the first in-depth analysis into the nature and expression of IFNc, IFNd and IFNh in the perciform fish, meagre. Constitutive expression was analysed initially during larval development and in adult tissues (gills, mid-gut, head kidney, spleen). During early ontogeny IFNc was the highest expressed IFN, and this was also the case in adult tissues with the exception of gills where IFNd was highest. However, comparison between tissues for individual isoforms showed that spleen had high transcript levels of all three IFNs, IFNd/IFNh were also highly expressed in gills. The expression of each sub-group was increased significantly in the four tissues following injection of poly I:C, however, this increase was only seen in the mid-gut for IFNh. Following in vitro stimulation with poly I:C again all three isoforms were upregulated, although with differences in kinetics and the cell source used. For example, early induction was seen for IFNc/IFNh in gill cells, IFNd/IFNh in splenocytes and all three isoforms in head kidney cells. Induction was sustained in splenocytes and head kidney cells, but in gut cells only a late induction was seen. These results demonstrate a complex pattern of regulation between the different IFN isoforms present in meagre and highlights potential sub-functionalisation of these IFN subgroups during perciform anti-viral responses.

Abstract
Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), components of innate immunity, play an important role in protecting fish. In this study we report the molecular cloning of full open reading frames and characterization of expression of three AMP genes (β-defensin (defb), hepcidin (hep2), piscidin (pisc) in meagre (Argyrosomus regius). A phylogenetic analysis of the expressed sequences obtained shows the defensin isoform forms a clade with the other members of the beta class of this family, hepcidin corresponds to hepcidin 2, and piscidin corresponds to class I of its respective family. Gene expression profiles of AMPs was investigated, by means of quantification of mRNA in nine development stages, from 8 days post-hatching (dph) to accomplishment of juvenile form (120 dph). During development it was demonstrated defb, hep2, pisc were expressed in all stages of larval development and in juvenile tissues (kidney, spleen gut and gill). Moreover, expression patterns suggest the expression levels of theses AMPs are influenced by live prey (rotifer, Artemia) and first intake of commercial diet. Induction experiments in vivo (24 h) and in vitro (4, 12, 24 h) with PAMPs (LPS, poly (I:C), β-glucan) revealed significant changes in gene expression of the three AMP genes, in kidney, spleen, gut and gill. However, expression profiles differed in magnitude and time course response. defb expression shows a similar trend in vivo and in vitro in kidney at 24 h after LPS and β-glucan stimulation. The hep2 expression levels were up-regulated upon β-glucan challenge in vivo, more in gut and gills than kidney, while in vitro hep2 expression was up-regulated in kidney cells by LPS, poly (I:C), β-glucan (4 h). pisc expression was up-regulated in kidney cells, splenocytes by β-glucan, but in gill cells by poly (I:C) and β-glucan in vivo. However, pisc expression was upregulated in kidney cells by β-glucan and gill cells by LPS at 4 post-stimulation in vitro. These data suggest that AMPs play an important role in defense against pathogens, with each AMP having differing efficacies against specific types of microorganisms, although follow-up studies focusing on the biological activities in fish are needed.

Abstract
In this study we show that four arginase isoforms (arg1a, arg1b, arg2a, arg2b) exist in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). We have characterised these molecules in terms of a) sequence analysis, b) constitutive expression in different tissues, and modulated expression following c) stimulation of head kidney macrophages in vitro, or d) vaccination/infection with Yersinia ruckeri and e) parasite infection (AGD caused by Paramoeba perurans and PKD caused by Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae). Synteny analysis suggested that these arginase genes are paralogues likely from the Ss4R duplication event, and amino acid identity/similarity analyses showed that the proteins are relatively well conserved across species. In rainbow trout constitutive expression of one or both paralogues was seen in most tissues but different constitutive expression patterns were observed for the different isoforms. Stimulation of rainbow trout head kidney macrophages with PAMPs and cytokines also revealed isoform specific responses and kinetics, with arg1a being particularly highly modulated by the PAMPs and pro-inflammatory cytokines. In contrast the type II arginase paralogues were induced by rIl-4/13, albeit to a lesser degree. Vaccination and infection with Y. ruckeri also revealed isoform specific responses, with variation in tissue expression level and kinetics. Lastly, the impact of parasite infection was studied, where down regulation of arg1a and arg1b was seen in two different models (AGD in salmon and PKD in trout) and of arg2a in AGD. The differential responses seen are discussed in the context of markers of type II responses in fish and paralogue subfunctionalization.

Abstract
This study describes the concordance between advanced cancer patients' self-report of quality of life and their caregivers' perception of the patients' quality of life at two time points. It is often necessary for health professionals to rely on information about the patients' quality of life that is provided by family caregivers (proxy), even though information from the patients is considered 'the gold standard'. Therefore, it is important to establish how reliable this proxy information is. Data were collected 4-6 weeks following diagnosis of recurrent or progressive disease, and again 12 weeks later. Fifty-one patients and their caregivers completed the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Quality of Life Questionnaire (QLQ-C30), version 2.0 at both time points. Descriptive statistics were used to calculate patient and caregiver scores and describe the sample. The level of agreement between the two scores, the patients' self-report and the family caregivers' score, was calculated on the mean scores of each scale. In general, most caregivers were able to accurately rate the global quality of life, the level of functioning and the degree of symptom distress experienced by the person they were caring for, when compared with the patients' self-rating. Caregiver ratings for physical domains tended to be more in agreement with those of patients as compared with ratings of the psychosocial domains. This study suggests information from proxy raters is reliable when the proxy is a family caregiver, and this remains true over time.

Abstract
The allotonic frequency hypothesis proposes that the proportion of eared moths in the diet should be highest in bats whose echolocation calls are dominated by frequencies outside the optimum hearing range of moths i.e., <20 and >60 kHz. The hypothesis was tested on an ecologically diverse bat assemblage in northern tropical Australia that consisted of 23 species (5 families, 14 genera). Peak frequency of signals of bats within the echolocation assemblage ranged from 19.8 to 157 kHz but was greatest between 20 and 50 kHz. A strong positive relationship existed between peak call frequency and percentage of moths in the diet for a sample of 16 bats from the assemblage representing 13 genera (R2 = 0.54, p = 0.001). The relationship remained strong when the three species with low-intensity calls were excluded. When the two species with high duty cycle, constant-frequency signals were removed, the relationship was weaker but still significant. In contrast to previous research, eared moths constituted only 54% of moth captures in light traps at bat foraging grounds, and eared moths were significantly larger than non-eared individuals. These results show that the pattern of moth predation by tropical bats is similar to that already established for bat faunas in subtropical and temperate regions.

Abstract
Abstract Patterns in the composition of assemblages of microbat species sampled during the late dry season (the 'build-up') in north Australian savannas were assessed against a range of environmental factors as well as four a priori defined habitat types (riparian, escarpments, coastal and woodlands). Distinct species assemblages were most strongly associated with topographic and climatic variables. There were also limited associations with vegetation structure, fire and local roost potential but no associations with insects or water availability. Total species diversity at sample sites was associated with distance to rivers and rainfall. In general, species assemblages were not clearly defined and the number of significant environmental associations was relatively few. We compare these associations with those reported for bat assemblages elsewhere in Australia.
