Diagnostic Accuracy of Conjunctival Rt-Pcr in Sars-Cov-2: A Systematic Review and Diagnostic Accuracy Meta-Analysis

PURPOSE

To study the positivity rate of conjunctival realtime polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) testing for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

DESIGN

Systematic review and diagnostic accuracy meta-analysis.

METHODS

MEDLINE and EMBASE were queried using medical subject headings terms. Diagnostic accuracy meta-analyses and forest plots were obtained using the RevMan software.

RESULTS

After deduplication, appraisal of abstract titles and full-text analysis of 1441 articles, 42 articles with 3351 COVID-19 patients were included in this review. Of these, 412 conjunctival swabs/Schirmer paper strips tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 by RT-PCR. The pooled sensitivity of the RT-PCR tests across the 24 studies with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 patients was 10.3%.

CONCLUSIONS

Only 1 in 10 RT-PCR tests performed on conjunctival swabs were positive for SARS-CoV-2. Although this suggests that SARS-CoV-2 is likely present and detectable in the conjunctiva, this detection method has low diagnostic potential.

Trends and seasonal variation of antibiotic consumption by community residents in Hefei, China, 2012-2016

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to evaluate the trends and seasonal variations of antibiotic consumption by community residents in Hefei, China, over a 5-year period.

STUDY DESIGN

This was an ecological study.

METHODS

Data on antibiotic consumption by community residents in Hefei between 2012 and 2016 were collected from the Hefei Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Statistical analysis was carried out using Microsoft Excel 2021, SPSS 26.0 and R4.1.3. An interrupted time series (ITS) analysis was modelled to assess the impact of policies on antibiotic consumption trends.

RESULTS

Amoxicillin and cephalosporins accounted for 63.64% and 30.48%, respectively, of the total defined daily dose per 1000 inhabitant-days (DID) of antibiotics in 2016. The total consumption of antibiotics decreased from 6.92 DID in 2012 to 5.61 DID in 2016 (P_trend = 0.017). Seasonal analysis showed an average of 34.24% antibiotic consumption in the winter over the 5 years. The equation constructed by the ITS analysis was Y = 5.530 + 0.323X1 - 7.574X2 - 0.323X3 + ε.

CONCLUSION

Between 2012 and 2016, overall antibiotic consumption by community residents in Hefei decreased significantly. The impact of antibiotic policies, implemented between 2011 and 2013, started to appear in 2014 when the consumption of antibiotics decreased. This study has important policy implications for the use of antibiotics at the community level. Further studies on the trends of antibiotic consumption are required, and strategies should be designed to promote appropriate use of antibiotics.

Codon usage bias analysis for the spermidine synthase gene from Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze

The spermidine synthase (SPDS) gene exists widely in all types of plants. In this paper, the codon usage of the SPDS gene from Camellia sinensis (CsSPDS) was analyzed. The results showed that the codon usage of the CsSPDS gene is biased towards the T-ended or A-ended codons, which is similar to that observed in 73 genes selected from the C. sinensis genome. An ENC-plot for 15 SPDS genes from various plant species suggested that mutational bias was the major factor in shaping codon usage in these genes. Codon usage frequency analysis indicated that there was little difference between the CsSPDS gene and dicot genomes, such as Arabidopsis thaliana and Nicotiana tabacum, but significant differences in codon usage were observed between the CsSPDS gene and monocot genomes, such as Triticum aestivum and Zea mays. Therefore, A. thaliana and N. tabacum expression systems may be more suitable for the expression of the CsSPDS gene.

Smoking cession decreases mean platelet volume in healthy Korean populations

BACKGROUND

Smoking is considered as a major modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. It has been shown that smoking cessation drops the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as myocardial infarction and also improves platelet function. Because mean platelet volume (MPV) is a simple and convenient indicator for platelet activation, we planned to investigate the effect of smoking status on MPV in healthy populations.

METHODS

This study was conducted on 398 individuals who visited our hospital for regular medical check-ups and were confirmed not to have diabetes or hypertension. MPV was measured using EDTA blood on an Advia 2120 (Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics Inc., Tarrytown, NY, USA) within 2 hours.

RESULTS

Present smokers showed higher MPV levels than present non-smokers. When MPV was compared by taking previous smoking history and present smoking status into account, the smoking cessation group showed significantly lower MPV levels than other groups.

CONCLUSIONS

Because this finding was significant only in the female group, the change in MPV according to smoking status was found to be different by gender. We carefully suggest that smoking cessation can lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases through the change in MPV, which can be more effective for women than men.

[A longitudinal study on maternal-fetal transfer of antibody against poliomyelitis]

A study on antibody distribution and titer against poliovirus in 67 mothers and their 60-day-old new-born babies was carried out in Shi-yan, Hubei Province. The positive rates and the geometric mean titers of antibodies against Types I-II poliovirus in mothers were 98.58%, 1:32.67; 95.5%, 1:30.07; 92.5%, 1:14.58, respectively. In their 60-day-old babies, the antibody positive rates and geometric mean titers fell obviously: they were 34.3%, 1:2.45; 34.3%, 1:2.22; and 14.9%, 1:1.34, respectively. The authors suggest to immune those neonates (OPV zero), or to immune those mothers beginning from 28 weeks of pregnancy in order to raise the antibody titer and protect their babies during the early days.
