Influence of intracranial hemorrhage on clinical outcome in acute vertebrobasilar artery occlusion undergoing endovascular treatment

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

The effect of intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) on the outcome of patients with large-vessel occlusion undergoing endovascular treatment (EVT) has mainly focused on the anterior circulation. Knowledge of the relationship between ICH and outcomes in patients with acute vertebrobasilar artery occlusion (VBAO) receiving EVT is limited. We aimed to assess whether ICH is a prognostic marker for acute VBAO following EVT.

METHODS

Patients who underwent EVT for acute VBAO in the acute posterior circulation ischemic stroke (PERSIST) registry were included. All patients were classified as having no or any-ICH. Any-ICH was subdivided into asymptomatic and symptomatic ICH. A multivariate regression analysis was performed to evaluate the association between ICH and functional outcomes in patients with acute VBAO after receiving EVT.

RESULTS

Five hundred and forty-seven patients, including 107 patients with ICH (19.6%): 38 (7.0%) and 69 (12.6%) with symptomatic and asymptomatic ICH, respectively. After adjustment for potential confounders, any-ICH was independently associated with reduced chance of favorable outcome (OR 0.39, 95% CI 0.21-0.72, P=0.003), functional independence (OR 0.24, 95% CI 0.16-0.52, P<0.001), and excellent outcome (OR 0.34, 95% CI 0.15-0.75, P=0.008), and increased mortality risk (OR 2.14, 95% CI 1.30-3.51, P=0.003). Symptomatic ICH had a similar association. Moreover, asymptomatic ICH was a negative predictor of functional independence (OR 0.39, 95% CI 0.17-0.88, P=0.024).

CONCLUSION

Any- and symptomatic ICH were strongly associated with worse clinical outcomes and increased mortality in patients with acute VBAO who underwent EVT. Asymptomatic ICH was an inverse predictor of functional independence.

Selective Electrochemical Oxidation of Benzylic C-H to Benzylic Alcohols with the Aid of Imidazolium Radical Mediators

Selective oxidation of benzylic C-H to benzylic alcohols is a well-known challenge in the chemical community since benzylic C-H is more prone to be overoxidized to benzylic ketones. In this work, we report the highly selective electro-oxidation of benzylic C-H to benzylic alcohols in an undivided cell in ionic liquid-based solution. As an example, the selectivity toward xanthydrol could be as high as 95.7% at complete conversion of xanthene, a typical benzylic C-H compound, on gram-scale in imidazolium bromide/H2O/DMF. Mechanism investigation reveals that the imidazolium radical generated in situ participants in a proton-coupled electron transfer process and low-barrier hydrogen bonds stabilize the reaction intermediates, together steering the redox equilibrium, favoring benzylic alcohols over benzylic ketones.

Structure and Ecological Function of Fungal Endophytes from Stems of Different Mulberry Cultivars

To explore the microbial community structure and ecological function of mulberry and their potential relationship with the resistance of mulberry, the community structure and function of endophytic fungi in 18 mulberry cultivars were analyzed and predicted by using high-throughput sequencing technology and the FUNGuild database. A total of 352 operational taxonomic units of fungi were observed at a 97% similarity level, representing six phyla of fungi, Fungi_unclassified, Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, Zygomycota, Rozellomycota, and Chytridiomycota. Fungi_unclassified was dominant, and Ascomycota was relatively dominant in all cultivars. At the genus level, Ascomycota_unclassified was dominant, and Ampelomyces was relatively dominant, with a richness in TAIWANCHANGGUOSANG 16.47-8975.69 times that in the other cultivars. Classified Ascomycota_unclassified was 4.75-296.65 times more common in NANYUANSIJI than in the other cultivars. Based on the FUNGuild analysis method, we successfully annotated six nutrient types, namely, pathotroph, pathotroph-saprotroph, pathotroph-saprotroph-symbiotroph, saprotroph, saprotroph-symbiotroph, and symbiotroph, among which saprophytic-symbiotic accounted for the largest proportion and was absolutely dominant in TWC. This research suggests that community composition differs among cultivars and that the diversity and richness of endophytic fungi in resistant cultivars are higher than those in susceptible cultivars. The ecological functions of cultivars with different resistances are quite different.

Non-destructive detection of protein content in mulberry leaves by using hyperspectral imaging

Protein content is one of the most important indicators for assessing the quality of mulberry leaves. This work is carried out for the rapid and non-destructive detection of protein content of mulberry leaves using hyperspectral imaging (HSI) (Specim FX10 and FX17, Spectral Imaging Ltd., Oulu, Finland). The spectral range of the HSI acquisition system and data processing methods (pretreatment, feature extraction, and modeling) is compared. Hyperspectral images of three spectral ranges in 400-1,000 nm (Spectral Range I), 900-1,700 nm (Spectral Range II), and 400-1,700 nm (Spectral Range III) were considered. With standard normal variate (SNV), Savitzky-Golay first-order derivation, and multiplicative scatter correction used to preprocess the spectral data, and successive projections algorithm (SPA), competitive adaptive reweighted sampling, and random frog used to extract the characteristic wavelengths, regression models are constructed by using partial least square and least squares-support vector machine (LS-SVM). The protein content distribution of mulberry leaves is visualized based on the best model. The results show that the best results are obtained with the application of the model constructed by combining SNV with SPA and LS-SVM, showing an R 2 of up to 0.93, an RMSE of just 0.71 g/100 g, and an RPD of up to 3.83 based on the HSI acquisition system of 900-1700 nm. The protein content distribution map of mulberry leaves shows that the protein of healthy mulberry leaves distributes evenly among the mesophyll, with less protein content in the vein of the leaves. The above results show that rapid, non-destructive, and high-precision detection of protein content of mulberry leaves can be achieved by applying the SWIR HSI acquisition system combined with the SNV-SPA-LS-SVM algorithm.

Hybrid Immuno-RT for Bulky Tumors: Standard Fractionation with Partial Tumor SBRT

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE(S)

Bulky tumors remain challenging to be treated. Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) is effective against radioresistant tumor cells and can induce immunogenic cell death (ICD) that leads to T-cell-mediated antitumor effects. Low-dose radiation (LDRT) can inflame the tumor microenvironment (TME) by recruiting T cells. We designed a novel radiotherapy technique (RT, ERT) whose dose distribution map resembles the "eclipse" by concurrently delivering LDRT to the whole tumor, meanwhile SBRT to only a part of the same tumor. This study examined the safety and efficacy of ERT to bulky lesions with PD-1 inhibitors in mice and patients.

MATERIALS/METHODS

In mice with CT26 colon or LLC1 lung bulky tumors (400 - 500 cm3), the whole tumor was irradiated by LDRT (2 Gy x 3), meanwhile the tumor center was irradiated by SBRT (10 Gy x 3); αPD-1 was given weekly. The dependence of therapeutic effects on CD8+ T cells was determined using depleting antibodies. Frequencies of CD8+ T cells and M1 macrophages (Mφ) were determined by flow cytometry. Multiplex Immunohistochemistry (mIHC) was applied to analyze the number and the location of CD8+ T cells and their subpopulations, as well as the phospho-eIF2α level (the ICD marker) of tumor cells in TME. Patients with advanced lung or liver bulky tumors who failed standard treatment or with oncologic emergencies were treated. Kaplan-Meier method was applied to estimate patients' progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS).

RESULTS

ERT/αPD-1 is superior to SBRT/αPD-1 or LDRT/αPD-1 in controlling bulky tumors in both mouse models in a CD8+ T-cell dependent manner. In the CT26 model, ERT/αPD-1 resulted in complete tumor regression in 3/11 mice and induced more CD8+ T cells and M1 Mφ in TME compared to other groups. mIHC analysis showed that ERT/αPD-1 induced higher bulk, stem-like (TCF1+ TIM3- PD-1+), and more differentiated (TCF1- TIM3+ PD-1+) CD8+ T cells infiltration into the tumor center and periphery compared to other groups. Compared to untreated or LDRT-treated tumor centers, tumor centers irradiated with ERT or SBRT showed elevated phospho-eIF2α accompanied by higher dendritic cell infiltration. In total, 39 advanced cancer patients were treated with ERT/αPD-1 or plus chemotherapy. Radiation-induced pneumonitis occurred in 1 of 26 patients receiving thoracic ERT. There were two cases of grade III toxicity associated with PD-1 inhibitors. No toxicity above grade III was observed. The objective response rate was 38.5%. The median PFS was 5.6 months and median OS was not reached at a median follow-up of 11.7 months.

CONCLUSION

ERT/αPD-1 showed superior efficacy in controlling bulky tumor in two mouse models. The hybrid immuno-RT (ERT) combing PD-1 inhibitors was safe and effective in patients with bulky tumors. Further clinical trials in combination with bioimaging to identify the optimal SBRT target region for the bulky tumor are warranted.

Non-destructive prediction and visualization of anthocyanin content in mulberry fruits using hyperspectral imaging

Being rich in anthocyanin is one of the most important physiological traits of mulberry fruits. Efficient and non-destructive detection of anthocyanin content and distribution in fruits is important for the breeding, cultivation, harvesting and selling of them. This study aims at building a fast, non-destructive, and high-precision method for detecting and visualizing anthocyanin content of mulberry fruit by using hyperspectral imaging. Visible near-infrared hyperspectral images of the fruits of two varieties at three maturity stages are collected. Successive projections algorithm (SPA), competitive adaptive reweighted sampling (CARS) and stacked auto-encoder (SAE) are used to reduce the dimension of high-dimensional hyperspectral data. The least squares-support vector machine and extreme learning machine (ELM) are used to build models for predicting the anthocyanin content of mulberry fruit. And genetic algorithm (GA) is used to optimize the major parameters of models. The results show that the higher the anthocyanin content is, the lower the spectral reflectance is. 15, 7 and 13 characteristic variables are extracted by applying CARS, SPA and SAE respectively. The model based on SAE-GA-ELM achieved the best performance with R² of 0.97 and the RMSE of 0.22 mg/g in both the training set and testing set, and it is applied to retrieve the distribution of anthocyanin content in mulberry fruits. By applying SAE-GA-ELM model to each pixel of the mulberry fruit images, distribution maps are created to visualize the changes in anthocyanin content of mulberry fruits at three maturity stages. The overall results indicate that hyperspectral imaging, in combination with SAE-GA-ELM, can help achieve rapid, non-destructive and high-precision detection and visualization of anthocyanin content in mulberry fruits.

Protocol for fabricating a photonic structure consisting of ZnO/Ag/ZnO film perforated with 2D periodic apertures based on photolithography technology

A ZnO/Ag/ZnO film with 2D periodic apertures can have a high visible transmittance and low emittances in atmospheric windows for visible-infrared compatible camouflage and a high transmittance in 5–8 μm for heat dissipation by radiation. This following protocol details the fabrication process of such a photonic structure based on photolithography technology. Also described are the related challenges and troubleshooting steps.

Highly fluorescent carbon dots from coix seed for the determination of furazolidone and temperature

In this work, blue emission fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) were fabricated by using the hydrothermal strategy from coix seed for the first time. We found that the prepared CDs possessed many excellent characteristics including excitation-dependent properties, good solubility and strong photostability. The optimal excitation and emission wavelength of CDs were 363 and 435 nm, respectively. Unbelievably, the fluorescence of CDs was selectively and effectively quenched with the addition of furazolidone (Fu). The quenching mechanisms might be assumed to the static quenching and inner filter effect (IFE). Based on this principle, a novel fluorescence probe was developed for the determination of Fu. At the same time, the proposed probe showed excellent sensitivity and selectivity towards Fu with a wide linear range from 0.5 to 100 μM, and the corresponding detection limit was 0.096 μM. Moreover, the CDs also could be applied for the sensing of temperature. The practical application of the CDs for Fu detection in real samples was also confirmed with the satisfactory recoveries changing from 96.6% to 108.5%, which provided huge possibility in the field of medical analysis.

[The effects of positive end-expiratory pressure on central venous pressure in patients with different chest wall elastic resistance]

Objective: To investigate the role of chest wall elastic resistance in determining the effects of positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) on central venous pressure (CVP) in patients with mechanical ventilation (MV). Methods: In this prospective study, according to the median of ratio of chest wall elastic resistance to respiratory system elastic resistance (Ers), patients were divided into high chest wall elastic resistance group (Ecw/Ers≥0.24) and low chest wall elastic resistance group [elastance of chest wall (Ecw)/Ers<0.24]. PEEP was set at 5, 10, 15 cmH₂O (1 cmH₂O=0.098 kPa) respectively. Clinical data including CVP, heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP) and respiratory mechanics were recorded. Results: Seventy patients receiving MV were included from November 2017 to December 2018. Clinical characteristics including age, BP, HR, baseline PEEP, the ratio of arterial oxygen partial pressure to fractional inspired oxygen (P/F) and comorbidities were comparable in two groups. However, patients with high Ecw/Ers ratio presented higher body mass index (BMI) than those with low Ecw/Ers ratio[ (25.4±3.2) kg/m² vs. (23.4±3.2) kg/m², P=0.011]. As PEEP increased from 5 cmH₂O to 10 cmH₂O, CVP in high Ecw/Ers group increased significantly compared with that in low Ecw/Ers group [1.75(1.00, 2.13) mmHg (1 mmHg=0.133kPa) vs. 1.50(0.50, 2.00)mmHg,P=0.038], which was the same as PEEP increased from 10 cmH₂O to 15 cmH₂O [2.00(1.50, 3.00)mmHg vs. 1.50(1.00, 2.00)mmHg,P=0.041] or PEEP increased from 5 cmH₂O to 15 cmH₂O [ 3.75(3.00,4.63)mmHg vs. 3.00(1.63, 4.00)mmHg, P=0.012]. When PEEP increased from 5 cmH₂O to 10 cmH₂O, 10 cmH₂O to 15 cmH₂O and 10 cmH₂O to 15 cmH₂O, there were significant correlations between Ecw/Ers and CVP elevation (r=0.29, P=0.016; r=0.31, P=0.011; r=0.31, P=0.01 respectively). Conclusions: In patients receiving mechanical ventilation, elevation of PEEP leads to a synchronous change of CVP, which is corelated with patients' chest wall elastic resistances.

Photoassisted Electron-Ion Synergic Doping Induced Phase Transition of n-VO2/p-GaN Thin-Film Heterojunction

As a typical correlated metal oxide, vanadium dioxide (VO₂) shows specific metal-insulator transition (MIT) properties and demonstrates great potential applications in ultrafast optoelectronic switch, resistive memory, and neuromorphic devices. Effective control of the MIT process is essential for improving the device performance. In the current study, we have first proposed a photoassisted ion-doping method to modulate the phase transition of the VO₂ layer based on the photovoltaic effect and electron-ion synergic doping in acid solution. Experimental results show that, for the prepared n-VO₂/p-GaN nanojunction, this photoassisted strategy can effectively dope the n-VO₂ layer by H⁺, Al³⁺, or Mg²⁺ ions under light radiation and trigger consecutive insulator-metal-insulator transitions. If combined with standard lithography or electron beam etching processes, selective doping with nanoscale size area can also be achieved. This photoassisted doping method not only shows a facile route for MIT modulation via a doping route under ambient conditions but also supplies some clues for photosensitive detection in the future.

[Comparative study of short-term efficacy,effectiveness and safety at different stages of the laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy learning curve]

Objective: To compare short-term efficacy,effectiveness and safety of laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy(LPD) learning curve at different stages and at the same time with open pancreaticoduodenectomy(OPD). Methods: Clinical data of 488 patients who underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy at Department of Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery,Affiliated Tongji Hospital,Tongji Medical College,Huazhong University of Science and Technology from July 2014 to December 2016 were collected. There were 40 cases at the groping stage of LPD surgery(100 cases at the same time of OPD),64 cases at the stable stage (89 cases at the same time of OPD),and 118 cases at the mature stage(77 cases at the same time of OPD).The clinical data of LPD and OPD in the same period were compared and analyzed by χ² test,t test and U test,respectively. Results: There was no significant difference in preoperative indicators between the two groups at the three stages(all P>0.05). In terms of intraoperative blood volume of the LPD group was significantly lower than that of the OPD group at three stages(M(Q_R))(111.1(150.0)ml(range:0 to 700 ml) vs. 393.9(400.0)ml(range:0 to 3 000 ml),120.8(115.0)ml(range:0 to 1 000 ml) vs. 442.9(450.0)ml(range:0 to 2 000 ml) and 150.0(200.0)ml(range:10 to 1 500 ml) vs. 364.3(400.0)ml(range:0 to 1 500 ml))(all P<0.05). And in terms of operation time of the LPD group was significantly higher than that of the OPD group at the groping stage((461.1±123.9)min(range:220 to 690 minutes) vs. (385.9±113.9)minutes(range:150 to 655 minutes))(P<0.05),and there was no significant difference between the LPD group and the OPD group at the stable and mature stage(P>0.05). The incidence of B+C level pancreatic fistula of the LPD group was higher than that of the OPD group at groping stage(17.5% vs. 3.0%)(P<0.05). There was no significant difference between the LPD group and the OPD group at the stable and mature stage(P>0.05). The incidence of postoperative rebleeding(27.5%),bile leakage(20.0%) and abdominal infection(20.0%) of the LPD group was higher than those of the OPD group(11.0%(11/100),5.0%(5/100) and 7.0%(7/100)) at groping stage. There were no significant differences between the LPD group and the OPD group at the stable and mature stage(P>0.05). There were no significant differences of incidence gastrointestinal leakage,hepatic failure,renal failure,cardiac failure,pulmonary infection and 30-day death between the LPD group and the OPD group(all P>0.05). The incidence rate of gastroplegia in the LPD group was lower than that in the OPD group at the stable and mature stage(26.5%(17/64) vs. 44.9%(40/89) and 24.5%(29/118) vs. 38.9%(30/77))(all P<0.05),there was no significant difference between the LPD group and the OPD group at the groping stage(P>0.05). In terms of other incidence of complications,there were no significant differences between the LPD group and the OPD group at three stages(all P>0.05). There were no significant differences of positive margin rate of pancreas,bile duct,retroperitoneum,vascular channel,uncinate process and rate of R0 resection between the LPD group and the OPD group at three stages(all P>0.05). In terms of numbers of lymph nodes,there was no significant difference between the LPD group and the OPD group at three stages(all P>0.05).Postoperative hospital stay of the LPD group was shorter than that of the OPD group at the stable stage((14.8±6.9)days(range:10 to 38 days) vs. (17.0±9.0)days(range:4 to 56 days)) and the mature stage((13.0±7.4)days(range:3 to 57 days) vs. (15.8±6.7)days(range:6 to 69 days)(all P<0.05). Conclusion: with the stable and mature learning curve of LPD surgery,compared with traditional OPD surgery,it has the characteristics of less intraoperative bleeding,shorter postoperative hospitalization,lower incidence of delay gastric empty,safe and effective.

Production of Piperidine and δ-Lactam Chemicals from Biomass-Derived Triacetic Acid Lactone

Piperidine and δ-Lactam chemicals have wide application, which are currently produced from fossil resource in industry. Production of this kind of chemicals from lignocellulosic biomass is of great importance, but is challenging and the reported routes give low yield. Herein, we demonstrate the strategy to synthesize 2-methyl piperidine (MP) and 6-methylpiperidin-2-one (MPO) from biomass-derived triacetic acid lactone (TAL) that is produced microbially from glucose. In this route, TAL was firstly converted into 4-hydroxy-6-methylpyridin-2(1H)-one (HMPO) through facile aminolysis, subsequently HMPO was selectively transformed into MP or MPO over Ru catalysts supported on beta zeolite (Ru/BEA-X, X is the molar ratio of Si to Al) via the tandem reaction. It was found that the yield of MP could reach 76.5 % over Ru/BEA-60 in t-BuOH, and the yield of MPO could be 78.5 % in dioxane. Systematic studies reveal that the excellent catalytic performance of Ru/BEA-60 was closely correlated with the cooperative effects between active metal and acidic zeolite with large pore geometries. The related reaction pathway was studied on the basis of control experiments.

Design and characterization of oil-in-water nanoemulsion for enhanced oil recovery stabilized by amphiphilic copolymer, nonionic surfactant, and LAPONITE® RD

The application of nanotechnology in the oil and gas industry has attracted widespread attention in recent years. This study aims to develop a nanoemulsion (NE) for use in enhanced oil recovery (EOR). The NE stabilized by anion amphiphilic copolymer, nonionic surfactant (Brij30) and modified LAPONITE® RD was prepared by the phase inversion composition (PIC) method. The appearance of the emulsion is translucent and the average particle size is less than 60 nm. The micromorphology and interfacial tension (IFT) are examined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and a spinning drop IFT meter, respectively. The NE possesses good stability evaluated by conductivity and particle size tests. The absolute value of the zeta potential of NE increases when modified LAPONITE® RD is added. In a core flooding experiment with an artificial sandstone core, the NE flooding increased oil recovery by 23.53% compared to water flooding.

Monomeric vanadium oxide: a very efficient species for promoting aerobic oxidative dehydrogenation of N-heterocycles

The isolated monomeric VO₄ species, controlled by natural ligand tartaric acid, in the VO_x/NbO_y@C catalysts exhibited excellent performances and good recyclability in the dehydrogenation of N-heterocycles.

Highly Efficient Synthesis of Amino Acids by Amination of Bio-Derived Hydroxy Acids with Ammonia over Ru Supported on N-Doped Carbon Nanotubes

The amino acids have extensive applications, and their productions from biomass-derived feedstocks are very attractive. In this work, the synthesis of amino acids by amination of bio-derived hydroxy acids with ammonia over different metallic nano-catalysts supported on various supports is studied. It is found that Ru nano-catalysts on the nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (Ru/N-CNTs) have an outstanding performance for the reaction. Different hydroxy acids can be catalytically converted into the corresponding amino acids with yields up to 70.0 % under mild conditions, which is higher than those reported. The reasons for the high efficiency of the catalyst are investigated, and the reaction pathway is proposed on the basis of control experiments.

Transit From Autotrophism to Heterotrophism: Sequence Variation and Evolution of Chloroplast Genomes in Orobanchaceae Species

The family Orobanchaceae including autotrophic, hemiparasitic, and holoparasitic species, is becoming a key taxa to study the evolution of chloroplast genomes in different lifestyles. But the early evolutionary trajectory in the transit from autotrophism to hemiparasitism still maintains unclear for the inadequate sampling. In this study, we compared 50 complete chloroplast genomes in Orobanchaceae, containing four newly sequenced plastomes from hemiparasitic Pedicularis, to elucidate the sequence variation patterns in the evolution of plastomes. Contrasted to the sequence and structural hypervariabilities in holoparasites, hemiparasitic plastomes exhibited high similarity to those of autotrophs in gene and GC contents. They are generally characterized with functional or physical loss of ndh/tRNA genes and the inverted small-single-copy region. Gene losses in Orobanchaceae were lineage-specific and convergent, possibly related to structural reconfiguration and expansion/contraction of the inverted region. Pseudogenization of ndh genes was unique in hemiparasites. At least in Pedicularis, the ndhF gene might be most sensitive to the environmental factors and easily pseudogenized when autotrophs transit to hemiparasites. And the changes in gene contents and structural variation potentially deeply rely on the feeding type. Selective pressure, together with mutational bias, was the dominant factor of shaping the codon usage patterns. The relaxed selective constraint, potentially with genome-based GC conversion (gBGC) and preferential codon usage, drive the fluctuation of GC contents among taxa with different lifestyles. Phylogenetic analysis in Orobanchaceae supported that parasitic species were single-originated while holoparasites were multiple-originated. Overall, the comparison of plastomes provided a good opportunity to understand the evolution process in Orobanchaceae with different lifestyles.

Carbon dots as fluorescent nanoprobe for the determination of N-acetyl-β-d-glucosaminidase activity

Carbon dots (CDs) were synthesized from p-aminophenol and ethylenediamine via one-step under mild condition and used as a sensitive fluorescent nanoprobe for the activity determination of N-acetyl-β-d-glucosaminidase (NAG). In this assay, p-nitrophenol was in situ produced from p-nitrophenyl-β-D-N-acetyl-glucosaminide, which was exclusively hydrolyzed by NAG. The UV absorption peak of p-nitrophenol (maximum at 400 nm) overlapped the excitation peak of CDs with maximum wavelength at 415 nm, which caused the fluorescence decline of CDs based on inner filter effect. The activity of NAG was determined by the fluorescence changes. The assay is highly sensitive to NAG with a low detection limit of 0.75 U L^-1 (K = 3) and showed a good linear relationship in the range from 1 to 45 U L^-1. This CDs nanoprobe was successfully applied for the determination of NAG activity in human serum and urine samples.

Complete chloroplast genome of the Meconopsis quintuplinervia (Papaveraceae), a traditional medicine of Tibetan

As a medicinal herb of Tibetan, Meconopsis quintuplinervia is often utilized for treating pneumonia. In this study, the complete chloroplast genome of M. quintuplinervia was determined by next-generation sequencing technology. The overall genome was 154,997 bp in size, including a large single copy (LSC), a small single copy (SSC) and two inverted repeat (IR) regions, which were 85,153 bp, 17,876 bp, and 25,984 bp in length, respectively. The circular chloroplast genome owned 129 genes, comprising 84 protein-coding genes, 8 ribosomal RNA genes (four rRNA species), and 37 transfer RNA genes. The GC contents of the entire sequence, LSC, SSC, and IR region were 38.5%, 37.1%, 32.8%, and 43%, separately. The maximum likelihood tree revealed that M. quintuplinervia was closely related to M. racemosa with strong support value.

The influence of organically intercalated montmorillonites on the interfacial tension and structure of oil-in-water nanoemulsions

The properties of O/W emulsions can be improved by the addition of nanomaterials. To explore the influence of organically intercalated montmorillonites (OMts) on the properties of O/W emulsions, we introduced an OMt into a nanoemulsion as a co-stabilizer with the quaternary ammonium Gemini cationic surfactant (G16-2-16) and nonionic lauryl polyoxyethylene ether (Brij 30). The influence of the organically intercalated montmorillonite (OMt) on the properties, such as the interfacial tension, zeta potential, stability, conductivity and morphology of the droplets, of the nanoemulsions was investigated. The results indicate obvious synergistic effects of OMt with G16-2-16. At the concentration of 0.15% w/v G16-2-16, ultralow interfacial tension (IFT) of the O/W results in the formation of nanoemulsions in a much shorter time with 3.4 × 10^-3% w/v OMt than that in the case of without OMt; however, at the concentration of 0.2% w/v G16-2-16, the interfacial tension of the O/W increased upon the addition of 3.4 × 10^-3% w/v OMt. In addition, light transmission measurements showed that the transmission of the nanoemulsions varied with temperature, and the process was reversible. The mechanisms of these phenomena were analyzed and confirmed by TEM.

[Efficacy analysis of LVIS and Enterprise stent assisted coil in the treatment of vertebral artery dissection aneurysm]

Objective: To observe and evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of LVIS stent and Enterprise stent assisted coil in embolization of vertebral artery dissection aneurysm (VDA). Methods: Clinical data of 96 patients with VDAs treated by LVIS stent and Enterprise stent assisted coil were analyzed retrospectively between January, 2013 and June, 2017.Of all, the LVIS stent assisted coil was performed in 28 patients (LVIS-stent group) and Enterprise in 68 patients (Enterprise-stent group). The clinical and imaging follow-up were performed. The instant embolization rate, complications, and recurrence rate were analyzed and compared between the two groups. Results: Instant angiographic results:in the LVIS stent group, complete occlusion was achieved in 17 VDAs (60.7%), near-complete occlusion in 10VDAs (35.7%), and partial occlusion in 1 VDA (3.6%). In the Enterprise stent group, complete occlusion was achieved in 27 VDAs (39.7%), near-complete occlusion in 34VDAs(50.0%), partial occlusion in 7VDAs (10.3%). Procedure-related complications occurred in 3 patients (10.7%) in LVIS stent group and 3 patients (4.4%) in Enterprise stent group. DSA follow-up was performed during 6 to 12 months after surgery, and 10 patients with vertebral artery dissection aneurysm recurred, 2 in the LVIS group and 8 in the Enterprise stent group. The latest modified Rankin Scale score was 0 in 55 patients,1 in 13, 2 in 1, 3 in 1, and 6 in 1. Among them, all follow-up patients in the LVIS stent group had good prognosis, while in the Enterprise stent group, 50 patients (94.4%) had a good prognosis. Conclusions: The stent-assisted coils have a higher degree of embolization in the vertebral artery dissection aneurysms, a higher rate of near-total embolization, a lower incidence of neurological complications, and a good prognosis. The complete andnear-complete occlusion rates and the incidence of neurological complicationsin the LVIS group was higher than that in the Enterprise groupand the recurrence ratesin the LVIS group was lower than that in the Enterprise group,both with no statistically significant difference.

The mechanical properties, microstructures and mechanism of carbon nanotube-reinforced oil well cement-based nanocomposites

High performance cement-based nanocomposites were successfully fabricated through the use of oil well cement filled with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as reinforcements. The dispersibilities of four dispersing agents for the MWCNTs were investigated and compared. The dispersed morphologies and structural characteristics of the MWCNTs were analyzed via TEM, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy studies. The effects of MWCNT addition on the rheological behavior and fluidity of oil well cement slurry were discussed. The mechanical properties of the cement-based nanocomposites with different MWCNT content values and different curing ages were explored and analyzed. Furthermore, the microstructures of the MWCNT reinforced cementitious nanocomposites were characterized via XRD, SEM, EDS, total porosity and pore size distribution studies. The results demonstrated that the 28 day compressive strength and 28 day flexural strength of the 0.05 wt% MWCNT cementitious nanocomposite increased by 37.50% and 45.79%, respectively, compared with a pure cement matrix. The elastic moduli of a 0.05 wt% MWCNT cementitious sample declined by 19.07% and 35.39% under uniaxial and triaxial stress, respectively. XRD and pore structure analysis indicated that the MWCNTs could accelerate the hydration process, increase the amount of hydration products and optimize the pore size distribution within the matrix. Additionally, crack bridging, pulling out, network filling and a calcium-silicate-hydrate (C–S–H) phase were exhibited by SEM images. Meanwhile, the reinforcing and toughening mechanism of MWCNTs was also discussed; these had a beneficial influence on the mechanical properties.

A series of anionic amphiphilic random copolymers with sodium p-styrene sulfonate and dodecyl methacrylate were synthesized via free radical polymerization and their property in the formation and stabilization of nano-emulsions were investigated.

A case of pulmonary mucormycosis presented as Pancoast syndrome and bone destruction in an immunocompetent adult mimicking lung carcinoma

Pulmonary mucormycosis is a rare opportunistic infection caused by Mucormycosis. This fungal infection is uncommon in immunocompetent individuals. Because of its various clinical and imaging manifestations, it is a diagnostic challenge to distinguish pulmonary mucormycosis from other pulmonary diseases, such as carcinoma. Herein, we report a case of pulmonary mucormycosis presenting as Pancoast syndrome and bone destruction of ribs. A 46-year-old Chinese woman was admitted due to pain in chest, right neck and arm for four months and hoarseness for one week. The pre-admission diagnosis via chest CT was pulmonary carcinoma. The subsequent bronchoalveolar lavage fluid analysis and bronchoscopic biopsy were negative for malignant cells, except chronic inflammation. Imaging-guided percutaneous biopsies were carried out after admission and the final pathological diagnosis was pulmonary mucormycosis. Although the patient was started on oral posaconazole of 400mg bid, the disease condition continued to deteriorate. She finally died of respiratory failure.
