Electrochemical Assembly Strategies of Polymer and Hybrid Thin Films for (Bio)sensors, Charge Storage, and Triggered Release

In the context of functional and hierarchical materials, electrode reactions coupled with one or more chemical reactions constitute the most powerful bottom-up process for the electrosynthesis of film components and their electrodeposition, enabling the localized functionalization of conductive surfaces using an electrical stimulus. In analogy with developmental biological processes, our group introduced the concept of morphogen-driven film buildup. In this approach, the gradient of a diffusing reactive molecule or ion (called a morphogen) is controlled by an electrical stimulus to locally induce a chemical process (solubility change, hydrolysis, complexation, and covalent reaction) that induces a film assembly. One of the prominent advantages of this technique is the conformal nature of the deposits toward the electrode. This Feature Article presents the contributions made by our group and other researchers to develop strategies for the assembly of different polymer and nanoparticle/polymer hybrid films by using electrochemically generated reagents and/or catalysts. The main electrochemical-chemical approaches for conformal films are described in the case where (i) the products are noncovalent aggregates that spontaneously precipitate on the electrode (film electrodeposition) or (ii) new chemical compounds are generated, which do not necessarily spontaneously precipitate and enable the formation of covalent or noncovalent films (film electrosynthesis). The applications of those electrogenerated films will be described with a focus on charge storage/transport, (bio)sensing, and stimuli-responsive cargo delivery systems.

Trends in the Synthesis of Polymer Nano- and Microscale Materials for Bio-Related Applications

Polymeric nano- and microscale materials bear significant potential in manifold applications related to biomedicine. This is owed not only to the large chemical diversity of the constituent polymers, but also to the various morphologies these materials can achieve, ranging from simple particles to intricate self-assembled structures. Modern synthetic polymer chemistry permits the tuning of many physicochemical parameters affecting the behavior of polymeric nano- and microscale materials in the biological context. In this Perspective, an overview of the synthetic principles underlying the modern preparation of these materials is provided, aiming to demonstrate how advances in and ingenious implementations of polymer chemistry fuel a range of applications, both present and prospective.

Hollow Spherical Fullerene obtained by Kinetically Controlled Liquid-Liquid Interfacial Precipitation

Nanomaterials with hollow structures are expected to exhibit new functionalities for materials engineering. Here we report the fabrication of fullerene (C 60 ) spheres having different hollow structures by using a kinetically controlled liquid-liquid interfacial precipitation (KC-LLIP) method. For this purpose, 1,2-ethylenediamine (EDA) was used as a covalent cross-linker of C 60 molecules to form C 60 -EDA shells, while in-situ generated EDA-sulfur (EDA-S) droplets were applied as 'yolks' being eliminated by washing following formation of the yolk-shell structure, leading to hollow structures. Porous spheres, string hollow spheres, hollow spheres, and open hollow spheres have been synthesized by controlling the kinetics of nucleation of C 60 -EDA and the template EDA-S growth. Isopropanol was used as an additive to control the discrepancy in growth rates of C 60 -EDA and EDA-S. This facile KC-LLIP preparation method is expected to facilitate the large-scale fabrication and application of structured C 60 spheres in materials science and technology.

Photosensitizer Encryption with Aggregation Enhanced Singlet Oxygen Production

Chromophores that generate singlet oxygen (¹O₂) in water are essential to developing noninvasive disease treatments using photodynamic therapy (PDT). A facile approach for formation of stable colloidal nanoparticles of ¹O₂ photosensitizers, which exhibit aggregation enhanced ¹O₂ generation in water toward applications as PDT agents, is reported. Chromophore encryption within a fuchsonarene macrocyclic scaffold insulates the photosensitizer from aggregation induced deactivation pathways, enabling a higher chromophore density than typical ¹O₂ generating nanoparticles. Aggregation enhanced ¹O₂ generation in water is observed, and variation in molecular structure allows for regulation of the physical properties of the nanoparticles which ultimately affects the ¹O₂ generation. In vitro activity and the ability of the particles to pass through the cell membrane into the cytoplasm is demonstrated using confocal fluorescence microscopy with HeLa cells. Photosensitizer encryption in rigid macrocycles, such as fuchsonarenes, offers new prospects for the production of biocompatible nanoarchitectures for applications involving ¹O₂ generation.

Surface Plasmon Tunability of Core-Shell Au@Mo6 Nanoparticles by Shell Thickness Modification

Plasmon resonances of noble metal nanoparticles are used to enhance light-matter interactions in the nanoworld. The nanoparticles' optical response depends strongly on the dielectric permittivity of the surrounding medium. We show that the plasmon resonance energy of core-shell Au@Mo₆ nanoparticles can be tuned from 2.4 to 1.6 eV by varying the thickness of their Mo₆ cluster shells between zero and 70 nm, when the core diameter is fixed at 100 nm. We probe their plasmonic response by performing nanometer-resolution plasmon mapping on individual nanoparticles, using electron energy-loss spectroscopy inside a transmission electron microscope. Our experimental results are corroborated by numerical simulations performed using boundary element methods. The simulations predict a similar dependency for the extinction energy, showing that this effect could also be observed by light-optical experiments outside the electron microscope, although limited by the size distribution of the nanoparticles in solution and the substantial scattering effects.

Building up DNA, bit by bit: a simple description of chain assembly

We simulate the assembly of DNA copolymers from two types of short duplexes (short double strands with a single-stranded overhang at each end), as described by the oxDNA model. We find that the statistics of chain lengths can be well reproduced by a simple theory that treats the association of particles into ideal (i.e., non-interacting) clusters as a reversible chemical reaction. The reaction constants can be predicted either from SantaLucia's theory or from Wertheim's thermodynamic perturbation theory of association for spherical patchy particles. Our results suggest that theories incorporating very limited molecular detail may be useful for predicting the broad equilibrium features of copolymerisation.

Revisiting properties of edge-bridged bromide tantalum clusters in the solid-state, in solution and vice versa: an intertwined experimental and modelling approach

Edge-bridged halide tantalum clusters based on the {Ta₆Br₁₂}⁴⁺ core have been the topic of many physicostructural investigations both in solution and in the solid-state. Despite a large number of studies, the fundamental correlations between compositions, local symmetry, electronic structures of [{Ta₆Brⁱ₁₂}L^a₆]^m+/n- cluster units (L = Br or H₂O, in solution and in the solid-state), redox states, and vibrational and absorption properties are still not well established. Using K₄[{Ta₆Brⁱ₁₂}Br^a₆] as a starting precursor (i: inner and a: apical), we have investigated the behavior of the [{Ta₆Brⁱ₁₂}Br^a₆]^4- cluster unit in terms of oxidation properties and chemical modifications both in solution (water and organic solvent) and after recrystallization. A wide range of experimental techniques in combination with quantum chemical simulations afford new data that allow the puzzling behavior of the cluster units in response to changes in their environment to be revealed. Apical ligands undergo changes like modifications of interatomic distances to complete substitutions in solution that modify noticeably the cluster physical properties. Changes in the oxidation state of the cluster units also occur, which modify significantly their physical properties, including optical properties, which can thus be used as fingerprints. A subtle balance exists between the number of substituted apical ligands and the cluster oxidation state. This study provides new information about the exact nature of the species formed during the transition from the solid-state to solutions and vice versa. This shows new perspectives on optimization protocols for the design of Ta₆ cluster-based materials.

Particle transport constraints via Bayesian spectral fitting of multiple atomic lines

Optimized operation of fusion devices demands detailed understanding of plasma transport, a problem that must be addressed with advances in both measurement and data analysis techniques. In this work, we adopt Bayesian inference methods to determine experimental particle transport, leveraging opportunities from high-resolution He-like ion spectra in a tokamak plasma. The Bayesian spectral fitting code is used to analyze resonance (w), forbidden (z), intercombination (x, y), and satellite (k, j) lines of He-like Ca following laser blow-off injections on Alcator C-Mod. This offers powerful transport constraints since these lines depend differently on electron temperature and density, but also differ in their relation to Li-like, He-like, and H-like ion densities, often the dominant Ca charge states over most of the C-Mod plasma radius. Using synthetic diagnostics based on the AURORA package, we demonstrate improved effectiveness of impurity transport inferences when spectroscopic data from a progressively larger number of lines are included.

All-DNA System Close to the Percolation Threshold

We characterize via small-angle neutron scattering the structural properties of a mixture of all-DNA particles with functionalities 4 (A) and 2 (B) constrained by design to reside close to the percolation threshold. DNA base sequences are selected such that A particles can only bind with B ones and that at the studied temperature (10 °C) all AB bonds are formed and long-lived, originating highly polydisperse persistent equilibrium clusters. The concentration dependence of the scattered intensity and its wavevector dependence is exploited to determine the fractal dimension and the size distribution of the clusters, which are found to be consistent with the critical exponents of the 3-D percolation universality class. The value of DNA nanoparticles as nanometric patchy colloids with well-defined functionality, bonding selectivity, and exquisite control of the interaction strength is demonstrated.

Binding branched and linear DNA structures: From isolated clusters to fully bonded gels

The proper design of DNA sequences allows for the formation of well-defined supramolecular units with controlled interactions via a consecution of self-assembling processes. Here, we benefit from the controlled DNA self-assembly to experimentally realize particles with well-defined valence, namely, tetravalent nanostars (A) and bivalent chains (B). We specifically focus on the case in which A particles can only bind to B particles, via appropriately designed sticky-end sequences. Hence AA and BB bonds are not allowed. Such a binary mixture system reproduces with DNA-based particles the physics of poly-functional condensation, with an exquisite control over the bonding process, tuned by the ratio, r, between B and A units and by the temperature, T. We report dynamic light scattering experiments in a window of Ts ranging from 10 °C to 55 °C and an interval of r around the percolation transition to quantify the decay of the density correlation for the different cases. At low T, when all possible bonds are formed, the system behaves as a fully bonded network, as a percolating gel, and as a cluster fluid depending on the selected r.

Electro-click construction of hybrid nanocapsule films with triggered delivery properties

Nanocapsule films composed of hollow PAA/IONPs hybridosomes were covalently assembled in one-pot by electro-click, enabling the encapsulation and triggered release of bodipy.

Structure and elasticity of composite nanoparticle/polymer nanoshells (hybridosomes®)

Our group recently introduced a new process to synthesize nanoparticle shells of about 100 nm, named "hybridosomes®". Here, the structure and mechanical properties of hybridosomes® made from iron oxide nanoparticles and poly(acrylic acid) are characterized using TEM, AFM and an osmotic compression technique. For the latter, the size distribution of the hybridosomes is monitored by nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA) in the presence of poly(ethylene glycol)s of different molecular weights. It is found that the size of the hybridosomes® can be tuned from ca. 80 nm to over 110 nm by adjusting the amount of nanoparticles and that their shell consists of a single layer of nanoparticles, with a porous structure. The size of the pores is estimated from osmotic compression experiments at ca. 4000 g mol^-1. The mechanical properties are measured both at the ensemble level using size measurements under osmotic pressure and at the single nanoparticle level by atomic force microscopy nanoindentation. Both osmotic and AFM experiments are analyzed in the framework of the continuum elastic theory of thin shells and yield a value of Young's modulus of the order of MPa.

Experimental Verification of the Role of Electron Pressure in Fast Magnetic Reconnection with a Guide Field

We report detailed laboratory observations of the structure of a reconnection current sheet in a two-fluid plasma regime with a guide magnetic field. We observe and quantitatively analyze the quadrupolar electron pressure variation in the ion-diffusion region, as originally predicted by extended magnetohydrodynamics simulations. The projection of the electron pressure gradient parallel to the magnetic field contributes significantly to balancing the parallel electric field, and the resulting cross-field electron jets in the reconnection layer are diamagnetic in origin. These results demonstrate how parallel and perpendicular force balance are coupled in guide field reconnection and confirm basic theoretical models of the importance of electron pressure gradients for obtaining fast magnetic reconnection.

Small-angle neutron scattering and molecular dynamics structural study of gelling DNA nanostars

DNA oligomers with properly designed sequences self-assemble into well defined constructs. Here, we exploit this methodology to produce bulk quantities of tetravalent DNA nanostars (each one composed of 196 nucleotides) and to explore the structural signatures of their aggregation process. We report small-angle neutron scattering experiments focused on the evaluation of both the form factor and the temperature evolution of the scattered intensity at a nanostar concentration where the system forms a tetravalent equilibrium gel. We also perform molecular dynamics simulations of one isolated tetramer to evaluate the form factor numerically, without resorting to any approximate shape. The numerical form factor is found to be in very good agreement with the experimental one. Simulations predict an essentially temperature-independent form factor, offering the possibility to extract the effective structure factor and its evolution during the equilibrium gelation.

Cluster formation and phase separation in heteronuclear Janus dumbbells

We have recently investigated the phase behavior of model colloidal dumbbells constituted by two identical tangent hard spheres, with the first being surrounded by an attractive square-well interaction (Janus dumbbells, Munaó et al 2014 Soft Matter 10 5269). Here we extend our previous analysis by introducing in the model the size asymmetry of the hard-core diameters and study the enriched phase scenario thereby obtained. By employing standard Monte Carlo simulations we show that in such 'heteronuclear Janus dumbbells' a larger hard-sphere site promotes the formation of clusters, whereas in the opposite condition a gas-liquid phase separation takes place, with a narrow interval of intermediate asymmetries wherein the two phase behaviors may compete. In addition, some peculiar geometrical arrangements, such as lamellæ, are observed only around the perfectly symmetric case. A qualitative agreement is found with recent experimental results, where it is shown that the roughness of molecular surfaces in heterogeneous dimers leads to the formation of colloidal micelles.

How fluorescent labelling alters the solution behaviour of proteins

The impact of adding a fluorescent dye to a protein is examined using protein phase diagrams and numerical simulations. The addition of the dye is the equivalent of adding a large attractive patch to the surface of the protein, which results in significant changes to the protein solution behaviour.

Cluster phases of decorated micellar solutions with macrocyclic ligands

An aqueous self-assembled micellar system (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS, decorated with various adhesive sites, cryptand Kryptofix 222 and crown ether 18-Crown-6 molecules) has been investigated by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) to have insights into the micellar structure, the micellar interactions, and the aggregation properties of the system. DLS demonstrates the existence of populations of aggregates in the submicrometer/micrometer range, while the Guinier analysis of the SAXS curves helps in detailing objects smaller than 30 nm. The aggregates of micelles are here named cluster phases of micelles (CPMs). Considering that SDS micelles in water do not aggregate at low concentration, it is shown that macrocyclic ligands induce the SDS micelle aggregation as a function of the concentration (i.e., investigated ligand/SDS molar ratios are 5.0, 1.5, 1.0, and 0.5) and hydrophobicity of the adhesive sites. The sizes and the percentages of the micelles and the CPMs have been monitored to test the stability and reversibility of the system. DLS results clearly show that the aggregation processes of the decorated micelles are reproducible at time intervals of the order of 1 month, while the stability may not be entirely maintained after a year. As an issue of particular relevance, the higher the ligand/surfactant molar ratio, the larger are the CPMs induced. The K222 ligand results in being more effective in promoting the micellar aggregation than 18C6 as a consequence of the different hydrophobicity.

Quantitative investigation of the two-state picture for water in the normal liquid and the supercooled regime

Several evidences have helped to establish the two-state nature of liquid water. Thus, within the normal liquid and supercooled regimes water has been shown to consist of a mixture of well-structured, low-density molecules and unstructured, high-density ones. However, quantitative analyses have faced the burden of unambiguously determining both the presence and the fraction of each kind of water "species". A recent approach by combining a local structure index with potential-energy minimisations allows us to overcome this difficulty. Thus, in this work we extend such study and employ it to quantitatively determine the fraction of structured molecules as a function of temperature for different densities. This enables us to validate predictions of two-state models.

Reentrant phase diagram of network fluids

We introduce a microscopic model for particles with dissimilar patches which displays an unconventional "pinched" phase diagram, similar to the one predicted by Tlusty and Safran in the context of dipolar fluids [Science 290, 1328 (2000)]. The model-based on two types of patch interactions, which account, respectively, for chaining and branching of the self-assembled networks-is studied both numerically via Monte Carlo simulations and theoretically via first-order perturbation theory. The dense phase is rich in junctions, while the less-dense phase is rich in chain ends. The model provides a reference system for a deep understanding of the competition between condensation and self-assembly into equilibrium-polymer chains.

Evidence of a two-state picture for supercooled water and its connections with glassy dynamics

The picture of liquid water as consisting of a mixture of molecules of two different structural states (structured, low-density molecules and unstructured, high-density ones) represents a belief that has been around for long time awaiting for a conclusive validation. While in the last years some indicators have indeed provided certain evidence for the existence of structurally different "species", a more definite bimodality in the distribution function of a sound structural quantity would be desired. In this context, our present work combines the use of a structural parameter with a minimization technique to yield neat bimodal distributions in a temperature range within the supercooled liquid regime, thus clearly revealing the presence of two populations of differently structured water molecules. Furthermore, we elucidate the role of the inter-conversion between the identified two kinds of states for the dynamics of structural relaxation, thus linking structural information to dynamics, a long-standing issue in glassy physics.

Kinetic arrest in polyion-induced inhomogeneously charged colloidal particle aggregation

Polymer chains adsorbed onto oppositely charged colloidal particles can significantly modify the particle-particle interactions. For sufficient amounts of added polymers, the original electrostatic repulsion can even turn into an effective attraction and relatively large aggregates can form. The attractive interaction contribution between two particles arises from the correlated adsorption of polyions at the oppositely charged particle surfaces, resulting in a non-homogeneous surface charge distribution. Here, we investigate the aggregation kinetics of polyion-induced colloidal complexes through Monte Carlo simulation, in which the effect of charge anisotropy is taken into account by a DLVO-like inter-particle potential, as recently proposed by Velegol and Thwar (Langmuir 17, 7687 (2001)). The results reveal that the aggregation process slows down due to the progressive increase of the potential barrier height upon clustering. Within this framework, the experimentally observed cluster phases in polyelectrolyte-liposome solutions can be interpreted as a kinetic arrested state.

Asymmetric caging in soft colloidal mixtures

The long-standing observations that different amorphous materials exhibit a pronounced enhancement of viscosity and eventually vitrify on compression or cooling continue to fascinate and challenge scientists, on the ground of their physical origin and practical implications. Glass formation is a generic phenomenon, observed in physically quite distinct systems that encompass hard and soft particles. It is believed that a common underlying scenario, namely cage formation, drives dynamical arrest, especially at high concentrations. Here, we identify a novel, asymmetric glassy state in soft colloidal mixtures, which is characterized by strongly anisotropically distorted cages, bearing similarities to those of hard-sphere glasses under shear. The anisotropy is induced by the presence of soft additives. This phenomenon seems to be generic to soft colloids and its origins lie in the penetrability of the constituent particles. The resulting phase diagram for mixtures of soft particles is clearly distinct from that of hard-sphere mixtures and brings forward a rich variety of vitrified states that delineate an ergodic lake in the parameter space spanned by the size ratio between the two components and by the concentration of the additives. Thus, a new route opens for the rational design of soft particles with desired tunable rheological properties.

Glass transition line in C60: a mode-coupling/molecular-dynamics study

We report a study of the mode-coupling theory (MCT) glass transition line for the Girifalco model of C60 fullerene. The equilibrium static structure factor of the model, the only required input for the MCT calculations, is provided by molecular dynamics simulations. The glass transition line develops inside the metastable liquid-solid coexistence region and extends down in temperature, terminating on the liquid side of the metastable portion of the liquid-vapor binodal. The vitrification locus does not show re-entrant behavior. A comparison with previous computer simulation estimates of the location of the glass line suggests that the theory accurately reproduces the shape of the arrest line in the density-temperature plane. The theoretical HNC and MHNC structure factors (and consequently the corresponding MCT glass line) compare well with the numerical counterpart. Our results confirm the conclusion drawn in previous works about the existence of a glassy phase for the fullerene model at issue.

Aging in a Laponite colloidal suspension: A Brownian dynamics simulation study

The authors report Brownian dynamics simulation of the out-of-equilibrium dynamics (aging) in a colloidal suspension composed of rigid charged disks, one possible model for Laponite, a synthetic clay deeply investigated in the last few years by means of various experimental techniques. At variance with previous numerical investigations, mainly focusing on static structure and equilibrium dynamics, the authors explore the out-of-equilibrium aging dynamics. They analyze the wave vector and waiting time dependence of the dynamics, focusing on the single-particle and collective density fluctuations (intermediate scattering functions), the mean-squared displacement, and the rotational dynamics. Their findings confirm the complexity of the out-of-equilibrium dynamical behavior of this class of colloidal suspensions and suggest that an arrested disordered state driven by a repulsive Yukawa potential, i.e., a Wigner glass, can be observed in this model.

Non-Gaussian energy landscape of a simple model for strong network-forming liquids: Accurate evaluation of the configurational entropy

We present a numerical study of the statistical properties of the potential energy landscape of a simple model for strong network-forming liquids. The model is a system of spherical particles interacting through a square-well potential, with an additional constraint that limits the maximum number of bonds Nmax per particle. Extensive simulations have been carried out as a function of temperature, packing fraction, and Nmax. The dynamics of this model are characterized by Arrhenius temperature dependence of the transport coefficients and by nearly exponential relaxation of dynamic correlators, i.e., features defining strong glass-forming liquids. This model has two important features: (i) Landscape basins can be associated with bonding patterns. (ii) The configurational volume of the basin can be evaluated in a formally exact way, and numerically with an arbitrary precision. These features allow us to evaluate the number of different topologies the bonding pattern can adopt. We find that the number of fully bonded configurations, i.e., configurations in which all particles are bonded to Nmax neighbors, is extensive, suggesting that the configurational entropy of the low temperature fluid is finite. We also evaluate the energy dependence of the configurational entropy close to the fully bonded state and show that it follows a logarithmic functional form, different from the quadratic dependence characterizing fragile liquids. We suggest that the presence of a discrete energy scale, provided by the particle bonds, and the intrinsic degeneracy of fully bonded disordered networks differentiates strong from fragile behavior.

Gel to glass transition in simulation of a valence-limited colloidal system

We numerically study a simple model for thermoreversible colloidal gelation in which particles can form reversible bonds with a predefined maximum number of neighbors. We focus on three and four maximally coordinated particles, since in these two cases the low valency makes it possible to probe, in equilibrium, slow dynamics down to very low temperatures T. By studying a large region of T and packing fraction phi we are able to estimate both the location of the liquid-gas phase separation spinodal and the locus of dynamic arrest, where the system is trapped in a disordered nonergodic state. We find that there are two distinct arrest lines for the system: a glass line at high packing fraction, and a gel line at low phi and T. The former is rather vertical (phi controlled), while the latter is rather horizontal (T controlled) in the phi-T plane. Dynamics on approaching the glass line along isotherms exhibit a power-law dependence on phi, while dynamics along isochores follow an activated (Arrhenius) dependence. The gel has clearly distinct properties from those of both a repulsive and an attractive glass. A gel to glass crossover occurs in a fairly narrow range in phi along low-T isotherms, seen most strikingly in the behavior of the nonergodicity factor. Interestingly, we detect the presence of anomalous dynamics, such as subdiffusive behavior for the mean squared displacement and logarithmic decay for the density correlation functions in the region where the gel dynamics interferes with the glass dynamics.

Tailoring the flow of soft glasses by soft additives

We examine the vitrification and melting of asymmetric star polymer mixtures by combining rheological measurements with mode coupling theory. We identify two types of glassy states, a single glass, in which the small component is fluid in the glassy matrix of the big one, and a double glass, in which both components are vitrified. Addition of small-star polymers leads to melting of both glasses, and the melting curve has a nonmonotonic dependence on the star-star size ratio. The phenomenon opens new ways for externally steering the rheological behavior of soft matter systems.

Relation between the Widom line and the dynamic crossover in systems with a liquid-liquid phase transition

We investigate, for two water models displaying a liquid-liquid critical point, the relation between changes in dynamic and thermodynamic anomalies arising from the presence of the liquid-liquid critical point. We find a correlation between the dynamic crossover and the locus of specific heat maxima C(P)(max) ("Widom line") emanating from the critical point. Our findings are consistent with a possible relation between the previously hypothesized liquid-liquid phase transition and the transition in the dynamics recently observed in neutron scattering experiments on confined water. More generally, we argue that this connection between C(P)(max) and dynamic crossover is not limited to the case of water, a hydrogen bond network-forming liquid, but is a more general feature of crossing the Widom line. Specifically, we also study the Jagla potential, a spherically symmetric two-scale potential known to possess a liquid-liquid critical point, in which the competition between two liquid structures is generated by repulsive and attractive ramp interactions.

One-Dimensional Cluster Growth and Branching Gels in Colloidal Systems with Short-Range Depletion Attraction and Screened Electrostatic Repulsion

We report extensive numerical simulations of a simple model for charged colloidal particles in suspension with small nonadsorbing polymers. The chosen effective one-component interaction potential is composed of a short-range attractive part complemented by a Yukawa repulsive tail. We focus on the case where the screening length is comparable to the particle radius. Under these conditions, at low temperature, particles locally cluster into quasi one-dimensional aggregates which, via a branching mechanism, form a macroscopic percolating gel structure. We discuss gel formation and contrast it with the case of longer screening lengths, for which previous studies have shown that arrest is driven by the approach to a Yukawa glass of spherical clusters. We compare our results with recent experimental work on charged colloidal suspensions (Phys. Rev. Lett. 2005, 94, 208301).

Energy landscape of a simple model for strong liquids

We calculate the statistical properties of the energy landscape of a minimal model for strong network-forming liquids. Dynamic and thermodynamic properties of this model can be computed with arbitrary precision even at low temperatures. A degenerate disordered ground state and logarithmic statistics for the local minima energy distribution are the landscape signatures of strong liquid behavior. Differences from fragile liquid properties are attributed to the presence of a discrete energy scale, provided by the particle bonds, and to the intrinsic degeneracy of topologically disordered networks.

Arrested phase separation in a short-ranged attractive colloidal system: A numerical study

We numerically investigate the competition between phase separation and dynamical arrest in a colloidal system interacting via a short-ranged attractive potential. Equilibrium fluid configurations are quenched at two different temperatures below the critical temperature and followed during their time evolution. At the lowest studied T, the phase-separation process is interrupted by the formation of an attractive glass in the dense phase. At the higher T, no arrest is observed and the phase-separation process proceeds endlessly in the simulated time window. The final structure of the glass retains memory of the interrupted phase-separation process in the form of a frozen spinodal decomposition peak, whose location and amplitude is controlled by the average packing fraction. We also discuss the time evolution of the nonergodicity parameter, providing evidence of a progressively decreasing localization length on increasing the packing fraction. Finally, we confirm that the reported results are independent of the microscopic dynamics.

Model for reversible colloidal gelation

We report a numerical study, covering a wide range of packing fraction Phi and temperature T, for a system of particles interacting via a square well potential supplemented by an additional constraint on the maximum number n(max) of bonded interactions. We show that, when n(max)<6, the liquid-gas coexistence region shrinks, giving access to regions of low Phi where dynamics can be followed down to low T without an intervening phase separation. We characterize these arrested states at low densities (gel states) in terms of structure and dynamical slowing down, pointing out features which are very different from the standard glassy states observed at high Phi values.
