Polar biodiversity data: From a national marine platform to a global data portal

Global access to accurate biodiversity data is a prerequisite to our progress in understanding biodiversity dynamics in ecosystems and any changes that are occurring. Despite recent major advancements in sharing data on the world’s species, one of the remaining challenges relates to the mechanics of guiding data systematically from its provenance to end users. It can take considerable effort to orchestrate a successful sampling campaign, manage samples obtained in often extreme, remote conditions and to secure preservation of, and access to, the acquired data. Here, we briefly describe biodiversity data flow from a polar ship to a national data repository and onward to a global data portal. This paper highlights a few crucial points in this process, which aims to provide information systematically into the mosaic of our polar species biodiversity knowledge. This flexible workflow can be modified for other data types and adopted by other data repositories.

Development of a workflow by the UK Polar Data Centre that summarizes internal infrastructure and external systems and standards required in order to collect polar marine biodiversity data and share them on global data portals in a standardized format. It highlights crucial aspects of the data preservation and sharing process and provides an overview of procedures applied. The workflow is explained using an example of a zooplankton abundance dataset. This is being adapted by the data repository for other data types and can be adopted by other data repositories.

A comparative study of the distribution and density of stomata in the British flora

The distribution of stomata over both leaf surfaces may affect both the photosynthetic rate and water use efficiency of species, implying that species with different photosynthetic and water requirements may also have different stomatal distributions. A database containing data on the distribution of stomata on the leaves of 469 British plant species was used to look for relationships between stomatal distribution (including both location on the leaf and density) and both habitat and morphological variables. Statistical models were applied to the data that minimized any effects that phylogenetic constraints may have had on the data.

Hypostomaty is common in woody species, species which typically occur in shaded habitats and species with large or glabrous leaves. Amphistomaty, however, predominates in species which occur in non‐shaded habitats, species with small, dissected or hairy leaves, and in annual species. Amphistomaty, therefore, tends to occur in species where CO₂ may be limiting photosynthesis (unshaded environments), or where there are structures to prevent water loss from the leaf (e.g. hairs). Hypostomaty, however, occurs in slow‐growing species (e.g. trees), species with leaves which have large boundary layers (large or entire leaves) and in species where CO₂ is unlikely to limit photosynthesis (shaded habitats).

Evaluation of DNA dosimetry to assess ozone-mediated variability of biologically harmful radiation in Antarctica

In this study we investigated the use of a DNA dosimeter to accurately measure changes in ultraviolet B radiation (UVBR; 280-315 nm) under Antarctic ozone hole conditions. Naked DNA solution in quartz tubes was exposed to ambient solar radiation at Rothera Research Station, Antarctica, between October and December 1998 for 3 h during UVBR peak hours (1200-1500 h). Trends in UVBR-mediated DNA damage (formation of cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers [CPD]) were related to cloud cover, ozone-column depth and spectroradiometric measurements of ambient radiation. Ozone-column depths ranged from 130 to 375 DU during the study period, resulting in highly variable UVBR doses, from 1.6 to 137 kJ m(-2) over the 3 h exposure, as measured by spectroradiometry. There was a strong positive correlation (86%) between dosimeter CPD concentrations and DNA-weighted UVBR doses. Ozone depth was a strong predictor of DNA damage (63%), and there was no significant relationship between CPD formation and cloud cover. Subtle changes in spectral characteristics caused by ozone depletion were detected by the biodosimeter; the highest CPD concentrations were observed in October when ozone-mediated shifts favored shorter wavelengths of UVBR. We conclude that the DNA biodosimeter is an accurate indicator of biologically effective UVBR, even under highly variable ozone conditions.

The distribution of arbuscular mycorrhizas in the British flora

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) associations with higher plants are common in many ecosystems but some plant species are consistently never or rarely infected. These species may differ morphologically or occur in different habitats from species which are usually mycorrhizal. A large data-set on the ecology of British angiasperms was used to test for relationships between the mycorrhizal status of British angiosperms and several morphological and environmental variables (life form, root diameter, seed weight, soil fertility, soil water availability, soil pH and habitat type). No relationship was found between soil fertility or soil water availability and frequency of infection with AM fungi. AM species, however, can grow in habitats with a higher pH than non-mycorrhizal species and perennial AM species occur in a significantly greater number of habitat types than perennial species which are never, or rarely, arbuscular mycorrhizal. Non-mycorrhizal species tend to have thinner roots, smaller seeds and occur mainly in aquatic, wetland and saline habitats.
