Abstract
Microbial carbon (C) use efficiency (CUE) plays a key role in soil C storage. The predation of protists on bacteria and fungi has potential impacts on the global C cycle. However, under conservation tillage conditions, the effects of multitrophic interactions on soil microbial CUE are still unclear. Here, we investigate the multitrophic network (especially the keystone ecological cluster) and its regulation of soil microbial CUE and soil organic C (SOC) under different long-term (15-year) tillage practices. We found that conservation tillage (CT) significantly enhanced microbial CUE, turnover, and SOC (P < 0.05) compared to traditional tillage (control, CK). At the same time, tillage practice and soil depth had significant effects on the structure of fungal and protistan communities. Furthermore, the soil biodiversity of the keystone cluster was positively correlated with the microbial physiological traits (CUE, microbial growth rate (MGR), microbial respiration rate (Rs), microbial turnover) and SOC (P < 0.05). Protistan richness played the strongest role in directly shaping the keystone cluster. Compared with CK, CT generally enhanced the correlation between microbial communities and microbial physiological characteristics and SOC. Overall, our results illustrate that the top-down control (the organisms at higher trophic levels affect the organisms at lower trophic levels) of protists in the soil micro-food web plays an important role in improving microbial CUE under conservation tillage. Our findings provide a theoretical basis for promoting the application of protists in targeted microbial engineering and contribute to the promotion of conservation agriculture and the improvement of soil C sequestration potential.

Abstract
Background The purpose of this study was to explore the association of sleep patterns with the development of first cardiovascular diseases (FCVD), progression to cardiovascular multimorbidity (CVM), and subsequently to mortality. Methods and Results This prospective study included 381 179 participants without coronary heart disease, stroke, atrial fibrillation, or heart failure at baseline, and they were followed up until March 31, 2021. We generated sleep patterns by summing the scores for 5 sleep behaviors, whereby <7 or >8 hours/d of sleep, evening chronotype, frequent insomnia, snoring, and daytime dozing were defined as high-risk groups. We used a multistate model to estimate the impacts of sleep patterns on the dynamic progression of cardiovascular diseases. Over a median follow-up of 12.1 years, 41 910 participants developed FCVD, 7302 further developed CVM, and 20 707 died. We found that adverse sleep patterns were significantly associated with the transition from health to FCVD, from FCVD to CVM, and from health to death, with hazard ratio associated with 1-factor increase in sleep scores being 1.08 (95% CI, 1.07-1.09), 1.04 (95% CI, 1.02-1.06), and 1.04 (95% CI, 1.02-1.05), respectively. When further dividing FCVD into coronary heart disease, stroke, atrial fibrillation, and heart failure, adverse sleep patterns showed a significant and persistent effect on the transition from health to each cardiovascular disease, and from heart failure or atrial fibrillation to CVM. Conclusions Our study provides evidence that adverse sleep patterns might increase the risk for the progression from health to cardiovascular diseases and further to CVM. Our findings suggest that improving sleep behaviors might be helpful for the primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND No prior study has examined the effects of air pollution on the progression from healthy to chronic lung disease, subsequent chronic lung multimorbidity and further to death. METHODS We used data from the UK Biobank of 265 506 adults free of chronic lung disease at recruitment. Chronic lung multimorbidity was defined as the coexistence of at least two chronic lung diseases, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and lung cancer. The concentrations of air pollutants were estimated using land-use regression models. Multistate models were applied to assess the effect of air pollution on the progression of chronic lung multimorbidity. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 11.9 years, 13 863 participants developed at least one chronic lung disease, 1055 developed chronic lung multimorbidity and 12 772 died. We observed differential associations of air pollution with different trajectories of chronic lung multimorbidity. Fine particulate matter showed the strongest association with all five transitions, with HRs (95% CI) per 5 µg/m3 increase of 1.31 (1.22 to 1.42) and 1.27 (1.01 to 1.57) for transitions from healthy to incident chronic lung disease and from incident chronic lung disease to chronic lung multimorbidity, and 1.32 (1.21 to 1.45), 1.24 (1.01 to 1.53) and 1.91 (1.14 to 3.20) for mortality risk from healthy, incident chronic lung disease and chronic lung multimorbidity, respectively. CONCLUSION Our study provides the first evidence that ambient air pollution could affect the progression from free of chronic lung disease to incident chronic lung disease, chronic lung multimorbidity and death.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is little evidence regarding the association between ambient air pollution and incidence and the mortality of pulmonary hypertension (PH). METHODS We included 494,750 participants at baseline in the UK Biobank study. Exposures to PM2.5, PM10, NO2, and NOx were estimated at geocoded participants' residential addresses, utilizing pollution data provided by UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA). The outcomes were the incidence and mortality of PH. We used multivariate multistate models to investigate the impacts of various ambient air pollutants on both incidence and mortality of PH. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 11.75 years, 2517 participants developed incident PH, and 696 died. We observed that all ambient air pollutants were associated with increased incidence of PH with different magnitudes, with adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) [95% confidence intervals (95% CIs)] for each interquartile range (IQR) increase of 1.73 (1.65, 1.81) for PM2.5, 1.70 (1.63, 1.78) for PM10, 1.42 (1.37, 1.48) for NO2, and 1.35 (1.31, 1.40) for NOx. Furthermore, PM2.5, PM10, NO2 and NO2 influenced the transition from PH to death, and the corresponding HRs (95% CIs) were 1.35 (1.25, 1.45), 1.31 (1.21, 1.41), 1.28 (1.20, 1.37) and 1.24 (1.17, 1.32), respectively. CONCLUSION The results of our study indicate that exposure to various ambient air pollutants might play key but differential roles in both the incidence and mortality of PH.

Abstract
The transformations of physicochemical properties on manganese oxides during peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation are vital factors to be concerned. In this work, Mn3O4 nanospheres homogeneously loaded on nickel foam are prepared, and the catalytic performance for PMS activation is evaluated by degrading a target pollutant, Acid Orange 7, in aqueous solution. The factors including catalyst loading, nickel foam substrate, and degradation conditions have been investigated. Additionally, the transformations of crystal structure, surface chemistry, and morphology on the catalyst have been explored. The results show that sufficient catalyst loading and the support of nickel foam play significant roles in the catalytic reactivity. A phase transition from spinel Mn3O4 to layered birnessite, accompanied by a morphological change from nanospheres to laminae, is clarified during the PMS activation. The electrochemical analysis reveals that more favorable electronic transfer and ionic diffusion occur after the phase transition so as to enhance catalytic performance. The generated SO4•- and •OH radicals through redox reactions of Mn are demonstrated to account for the pollutant degradation. This work will provide new understandings of PMS activation by manganese oxides with high catalytic activity and reusability.

Abstract
Objective: To understand the current situation of long working hours exposure of couriers in Zhejiang Province, and to analyze the influence of long working hours exposure levels on their occupational stress and depression symptoms, and provide a basis for promoting the physical and mental health of couriers. Methods: From September to December 2021 , 1159 couriers from Zhejiang Express Transport Companies were selected as respondents by cluster sampling, and their basic information were collected. The occupational stress and depression symptoms of the couriers were assessed using the Core Occupational Stress Scale (COSS) and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). The effects of long work hours (>48 h per week) on the occupational stress and depression symptoms of the couriers were analyzed. Results: The average age of 1159 courier in Zhejiang Province was (33.24±8.42) years, the average weekly working hours were (63.21±18.77) h, and 75.15% (871/1159) were long-term workers. The detection rates of occupational stress and depression symptoms in courier were 32.44% (376/1159) and 32.53% (377/1159), respectively. There were significant differences in the detection rates of occupational stress and depression symptoms among couriers with different ages, educational background, marital status, monthly average income, length of service, position or post, shift status, drinking status, and average weekly working hours (P <0.05). The adjusted logistic regression analysis showed that, after adjusting for the influence of confounding factors such as age, educational background, marital status, monthly average income, length of service, position or post, shift status and drinking status, compared with the weekly working hours ≤48 h, weekly working hours of 63-77 h, 78-92 h, ≥93 h were the risk factors for occupational stress (OR=1.547, 95%CI: 1.019-2.350; OR=1.886, 95%CI: 1.184-3.006; OR=2.338, 95%CI: 1.188-4.062) and depression symptoms (OR=1.897, 95%CI: 1.258-2.860; OR=2.041, 95%CI: 1.290-3.230; OR=4.978, 95%CI: 2.551-9.715) of couriers (P<0.05) . Conclusion: Long working hours could increase the risk of occupational stress and depression symptoms among couriers. It is necessary to arrange working hours reasonably to reduce the occurrence of occupational stress and depression symptoms of couriers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The link between ambient air pollution and the incidence of hypertension, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease (CKD) has been widely studied. However, the associations of air pollution with the dynamic progression to multimorbidity and mortality of these diseases are unknown. METHODS This study included 162,334 participants from the UK Biobank. Multimorbidity was defined as the coexistence of at least two of hypertension, diabetes, and CKD. Land use regression was used to estimate annual concentrations of particulate matter (PM2.5), PM10, nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and nitrogen oxides (NOx). Multi-state models were used to assess the association between ambient air pollutants and the dynamic progression of hypertension, diabetes, and CKD. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 11.7 years, 18,496 participants experienced at least one of hypertension, diabetes, and CKD, 2216 experienced multimorbidity, and 302 died afterwards. We observed differential associations of four air pollutants on different transitions from healthy status to incident disease (hypertension, diabetes, or CKD), to multimorbidity, and to death. The hazard ratios (HRs) of each IQR increment in PM2.5, PM10, NO2, and NOx for the transition to incident disease were 1.07 [95 % confidence intervals (CI): 1.04, 1.09], 1.02 (1.00, 1.03), 1.07 (1.04, 1.09), and 1.05 (1.03, 1.07), but the associations with the transition to death were significant for NOx only [HR: 1.04 (95 % CI: 1.01, 1.08)]. CONCLUSIONS Air pollution exposure might be one important determinant for the incidence and dynamic progression of hypertension, diabetes, and CKD, suggesting that more attention should be paid to ambient air pollution control in the prevention of hypertension, diabetes, and CKD, as well as their progression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies on the association between ambient air pollution and cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs) focused on a single disease, without considering cardiometabolic multimorbidity (CMM) and the progression trajectory of CMDs. METHODS Based on the UK Biobank cohort, we included 372,530 participants aged 37-73 years at baseline (2006-2010) with follow-up until September 2021. Incident CMDs cases were identified based on self-reported information and multiple health-related records in the UK Biobank. CMM was defined as the occurrence of at least two CMDs, including ischemic heart disease (IHD), stroke and type 2 diabetes (T2D). Exposure to ambient air pollutants, including particulate matter (PM) with aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 μm (PM2.5), ≤10 μm (PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and nitrogen oxides (NOx) were estimated at participants' geocoded residential addresses based on the high-resolution (1 × 1 km) pollution data from 2001 to 2021 provided by UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. Multi-state models with adjustment for potential confounders were used to examine the impact of long-term exposure to ambient air pollution on transitions from healthy to first CMD (FCMD), subsequently to CMM, and further to death. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 12.6 years, 40,112 participants developed at least one CMD, 3896 developed CMM, and 21,739 died. Among the four pollutants, PM2.5 showed the strongest associations with all transitions from healthy to FCMD, to CMM, and then to death [hazard ratios (95 % confidence intervals) per interquartile range (IQR) increment: 1.62 (1.60, 1.64) and 1.68 (1.61, 1.76) for transitions from healthy to FCMD and from FCMD to CMM, and 1.62 (1.59, 1.66), 1.67 (1.61, 1.73), and 1.52 (1.38, 1.67) for death risk from healthy, FCMD, and CMM, respectively]. After dividing FCMDs into three specific CMDs, we found that ambient air pollution had differential impacts on disease-specific transitions within the same transition phase. CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicate that there is potential for air pollution mitigation in contributing to the prevention of the development and progression of CMDs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The associations between air pollution exposure and morbidity and mortality of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) have been widely reported; however, evidence on such associations across different dynamic disease trajectories remain unknown. OBJECTIVE We examined whether ambient air pollution during the prehypertension (pre-HTN) stage could aggravate the progression from hypertension (HTN) to CVD, and consequent death. METHODS A total of 168,010 adults with pre-HTN (120 - 139 mmHg systolic blood pressure or 80 - 89 mmHg diastolic blood pressure) from the UK Biobank were included in this analysis. We used a multistate model to explore the associations between five air pollutants (PM 2.5 , PM 2.5 absorbance, PM 10 , NO 2 , and NO x ) and the risk of six disease transitions (from pre-HTN to HTN, from pre-HTN to CVD, from pre-HTN to death, from HTN to CVD, from HTN to death, and from CVD to death). Mediation analyses were further conducted to explore the role of intermediate diseases in the dynamic progression of CVDs. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 12 y, 13,743 (8.18%) of participants with pre-HTN developed HTN, whereas 12,825 (7.63%) and 4,467 (2.66%) directly developed CVD or died, respectively. Air pollution was positively associated with the dynamic disease progression. For example, a per-interquartile range increase of PM 2.5 was significantly associated with the hazard ratios (HRs) of 1.105 [95% confidence intervals (CI): 1.083, 1.127], 1.045 (95% CI: 1.022, 1.068), and 1.086 (95% CI: 1.047, 1.126) in the transition from pre-HTN to HTN, CVD, and death, respectively. Higher levels of air pollution were associated with increased transition probability of disease progression. Mediation analyses indicated that intermediate diseases subsequently significantly mediated air pollutant-associated risk to develop more serious disease. CONCLUSIONS This study provides evidence that air pollution might play a role in the early stages of CVD progression. Controlling air pollution might be an effective measure to prevent CVD progression and reduce the disease burden of CVD. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP10967.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The 523 poly-T length polymorphism (rs10524523) in TOMM40 has been reported to influence longitudinal cognitive test performance within APOE ε3/3 carriers. The results from prior studies are inconsistent. It is also unclear whether specific APOE and TOMM40 genotypes contribute to heterogeneity in longitudinal cognitive performance during the preclinical stages of AD. OBJECTIVES To determine the effects of these genes on longitudinal cognitive change in early preclinical stages of AD, we used the clinical trial data from the recently concluded TOMMORROW study to examine the effects of APOE and TOMM40 genotypes on neuropsychological test performance. DESIGN A phase 3, double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial. SETTING Academic affiliated and private research clinics in Australia, Germany, Switzerland, the UK, and the USA. PARTICIPANTS Cognitively normal older adults aged 65 to 83. INTERVENTION Pioglitazone tablet. MEASUREMENTS Participants from the TOMMORROW trial were stratified based on APOE genotype (APOE ε3/3, APOE ε3/4, APOE ε4/4). APOE ε3/3 carriers were further stratified by TOMM40'523 genotype. The final analysis dataset consists of 1,330 APOE ε3/3 carriers and 7,001 visits. Linear mixed models were used to compare the rates of decline in cognition across APOE groups and the APOE ε3/3 carriers with different TOMM40'523 genotypes. RESULTS APOE ε3/4 and APOE ε4/4 genotypes compared with the APOE ε3/3 genotype were associated with worse performance on measures of global cognition, episodic memory, and expressive language. Further, over the four years of observation, the APOE ε3/3 carriers with the TOMM40'523-S/S genotype showed better global cognition and accelerated rates of cognitive decline on tests of global cognition, executive function, and attentional processing compared to APOE ε3/3 carriers with TOMM40'523-S/VL and VL/VL genotypes and compared to the APOE ε3/4 and APOE ε4/4 carriers. CONCLUSIONS We suggest that both APOE and TOMM40 genotypes may independently contribute to cognitive heterogeneity in the pre-MCI stages of AD. Controlling for this genetic variability will be important in clinical trials designed to slow the rate of cognitive decline and/or prevent symptom onset in preclinical AD.

Abstract
Evidence concerning the associations of ambient air pollution exposure with bone mineral density and osteoporosis has been mixed. We conducted cross-sectional and prospective analysis of the associations between air pollution exposure and osteoporosis using data from UK Biobank study. Estimated bone mineral density (eBMD) of each participant at baseline survey was calculated using quantitative ultrasound data, and incident osteoporosis cases were identified during the follow-up period according to health-related records. Air pollution concentrations were assessed using land use regression models. We fitted multivariable linear and logistic regression models to estimate the associations of air pollution with eBMD and osteoporosis prevalence at baseline. We applied cox proportional hazard regression models to assess the relationships between air pollution and osteoporosis incidence. Among the 341,311 participants at baseline, higher air pollution exposure was associated with lower eBMD levels and increased odds of osteoporosis prevalence. For example, an IQR increase in PM2.5, PM2.5 absorbance, PM10, NO2 and NOx levels were associated with 0.0018 (95% CI: 0.0012, 0.0023) to 0.0052 (95% CI: 0.0046, 0.0058) g/cm2 decrease in eBMD. A total of 330,988 participants without osteoporosis were followed up for an average of 12.0 years. We identified 8105 incident osteoporosis cases (456 cases with pathological fracture and 7634 cases without pathological fracture) during the follow-up. The hazard ratios for an interquartile range increase in PM2.5, PM2.5 absorbance, PM10, NO2 and NOx were 1.09 (95% CI: 1.06, 1.12), 1.04 (95% CI: 1.02, 1.07), 1.04 (95% CI: 1.01, 1.07), 1.07 (95% CI: 1.04, 1.10), and 1.06 (95% CI: 1.03, 1.09), respectively. Our study suggests that ambient air pollution might be a risk factor of decreased bone mineral density and osteoporosis incidence.

Abstract
What is already known about this topic? Previous studies have illustrated the benefits of physical activity on cardiometabolic multimorbidity (CMM), while limited studies have concentrated on the trajectory of CMM progression. What is added by this report? Through multi-stage regression analysis, we found that physical activity could reduce the risk of CMM incidence. Participants initially free of cardiometabolic diseases (CMDs) may benefit more from engaging in recommended physical activity. What are the implications for public health practice? Adults, especially those initially free of CMDs, should engage in WHO-recommended physical activity as early as possible to prevent CMD incidence and further progression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Evidence supporting the adverse effects of air pollution and the benefits of physical activity (PA) on heart failure (HF) has continued to grow. However, their joint effects remain largely unknown. METHODS Our investigation included a total of 321,672 participants free of HF at baseline from the UK Biobank. Participants were followed up till March 2021. Information on participants' PA levels and additional covariates was collected by questionnaire. The annual fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentration was estimated using a Land Use Regression (LUR) model. Cox proportional hazards models were used to assess the associations of PA and PM2.5 exposure with incident HF, as well as their interaction on both additive and multiplicative scales. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 12.0 years, 8212 cases of HF were uncovered. Compared with participants with low PA, the hazard ratios (HRs) were 0.69 (95 % CI: 0.65, 0.73) and 0.61 (95 % CI: 0.58, 0.65) for those with moderate and high PA, respectively. PM2.5 was associated with an elevated risk of incident HF with an HR of 1.11 (95 % CI: 1.08, 1.14) per interquartile range (IQR) increment. The synergistic additive interaction between low PA and high PM2.5 exposure on HF was observed. Compared with participants with high PA and low PM2.5 exposure, those with low PA and high PM2.5 exposure had the highest risk of HF [HR (95 % CI): 1.90 (1.76, 2.06)]. CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicate that PA might still be an appropriate strategy to prevent HF for those living in areas with relatively high air pollution. Individuals with low PA may pay more attention to air pollution.

Abstract
Organic matter (OM) has an excellent retention effect on stabilizing chromium (Cr), and functional groups on OM play a predominant role in this process. Based on this result, it is found that a considerable amount of Cr in tannery sludge is immobilized from ion exchangeable species into bound species, benefiting from complexing reaction with functional groups. Especially, the mentioned immobilizing process is enhanced in way of adding with montmorillonite (MMT) which performs adsorption reaction with Cr, as well as plays interaction with functional groups. The result is confirmed by employing density functional theory (DFT) analysis, suggesting the binding ability among Cr, functional groups, and MMT is stronger (- 77.36503 eV) than that of the system of Cr and MMT (- 61.29942 eV), indicating the synergetic roles of OM and MMT. This synergetic role could also be illustrated by a new peak (Cr-OH 20.1%) shown in XPS result. Meanwhile, DFT analysis emphasizes that functional groups on OM give the response for binding with Cr in the order of hydroxyl (-OH) > carboxyl (-COOH) > epoxy (-COC), and all the functional groups tend to donate electron to bind with Cr. In addition, the stabilizing process shows a better fitting effect with pseudo second-order kinetic model (R2 > 0.94), indicating that exchangeable Cr mass transfer and chemical adsorption occur simultaneously.

Abstract
Freeze-thaw cycles in soils lead to break up of soil aggregates and the formation of dispersible soil colloids. Leaching events following freeze-thaw cycles can therefore mobilize and transport colloids through the soil profile. Here, we investigated the effect of freeze-thaw cycles on the subsequent mobilization of colloids in a Pb contaminated soil, and we quantified the amount of colloid-facilitated Pb transport. Soil contaminated with Pb (250 mg/kg or 1000 mg/kg) was packed into 15 cm tall columns, and the soil water content adjusted to field capacity (0.306 kg/kg). Columns were subjected to freeze-thaw cycles of 12 h freezing at -20 °C followed by 12 h of thawing at 25 °C. Then, the soil columns were leached with distilled water, and the effluent was analyzed for colloids, soluble Pb, and colloidal-bound Pb. Freeze-thaw cycles were found to generate dispersible soil colloids and lead to colloid-facilitated Pb transport. Colloid and Pb mobilization increased with increasing number of freeze-thaw cycles. The majority (83-97%) of the Pb that leached out of the columns was colloid-bound. Our findings suggest that freeze-thaw cycles in high latitude areas can mobilize heavy metals, which are otherwise immobile, through colloid-facilitated transport. More frequent freeze-thaw cycles in high-latitude regions, as predicted by climate change models, thus increases the risk of metal leaching from contaminated soils and can lead to subsequent ground water pollution.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Ambient air pollution has been widely linked with morbidity and mortality of stroke. However, its effects on dynamic progression trajectory of stroke remain unknown.We investigated the effects of ambient air pollution on progression trajectory from healthy status to incident stroke, poststroke cardiovascular diseases, and subsequent death. METHODS We retrieved 318,752 participants from the UK Biobank. The annual concentrations of air pollution [particulate matter (PM2.5, PMcoarse, PM10 and PM2.5 absorbance), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and nitrogen oxides (NOx)] were estimated through land use regressions. A multistate regression model was used to investigate the effects of air pollution on each stage of the progression of stroke. RESULTS During 3,765,630 person-years of follow-up, we identified 5,967 incident stroke patients, 2,985 poststroke cardiovascular patients, and 1,020 deaths afterward. Each 5 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5, NO2, and NOx was associated with the transition from healthy status to incident stroke [hazard ratios (HRs) (95% confidence intervals (CI)) = 1.24 (1.10, 1.40); 1.02 (1.00, 1.03); 1.01 (1.00, 1.02)] and transitions from healthy status to death directly [1.30 (1.21, 1.40); 1.03 (1.02, 1.04); and 1.02 (1.01, 1.02)]. We also observed positive associations for poststroke CVDs, especially for NO2 [1.04 (95% CI: 1.02, 1.06)], but these effects gradually declined for mortality outcome. DISCUSSION This study provides the first evidence that ambient air pollution is one important factor associated with the progression of stroke, and the effects differed across different clinical stages. A better understanding of the differential effects of air pollutants on different stroke transition stages could provide valuable insight toward targets for health management and clinical prevention.

Abstract
The co-existence of heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) challenges the remediation of polluted soil. This study aimed to investigate whether a combined amendment of biochar-immobilized bacterium (BM) could enhance the phytoremediation of heavy metals and PAHs in co-contaminated soil. The Bacillus sp. KSB7 with the capabilities of plant-growth promotion, metal tolerance, and PAH degradation was immobilized on the peanut shell biochar prepared at 400 °C and 600 °C (PBM4 and PBM6, respectively). After 90 days, PBM4 treatment increased the removal of PAHs by 94.17% and decreased the amounts of diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid-extractable Zn, Pb, Cr, and Cu by 58.46%, 53.42%, 84.94%, and 83.15%, respectively, compared with Kochia scoparia-alone treatment. Meanwhile, PBM4 was more effective in promoting K. scoparia growth and reducing the uptake of co-contaminants. The abundance of Gram-negative PAH-degrader and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic deaminase-producing bacteria within rhizosphere soil was significantly improved after PBM4 treatment. Moreover, the relative abundance of the Bacillus genus increased by 0.66 and 2.05 times under PBM4 treatment compared with biochar alone and KSB7, indicating that KSB7 could colonize in the rhizosphere soil of K. scoparia. However, the removal of PAHs and heavy metals after PBM6 and 600 °C biochar-alone treatments caused no obvious difference. This study suggested that low-temperature BM-amended plant cultivation would be an effective approach to remove PAHs and heavy metals in co-contaminated soil.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Though the association between air pollution and incident type 2 diabetes (T2D) has been well documented, evidence on the association with development of subsequent diabetes complications and post-diabetes mortality is scarce. We investigate whether air pollution is associated with different progressions and outcomes of T2D. METHODS Based on the UK Biobank, 398,993 participants free of diabetes and diabetes-related events at recruitment were included in this analysis. Exposures to particulate matter with a diameter ≤ 10 μm (PM10), PM2.5, nitrogen oxides (NOx), and NO2 for each transition stage were estimated at each participant's residential addresses using data from the UK's Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. The outcomes were incident T2D, diabetes complications (diabetic kidney disease, diabetic eye disease, diabetic neuropathy disease, peripheral vascular disease, cardiovascular events, and metabolic events), all-cause mortality, and cause-specific mortality. Multi-state model was used to analyze the impact of air pollution on different progressions of T2D. Cumulative transition probabilities of different stages of T2D under different air pollution levels were estimated. RESULTS During the 12-year follow-up, 13,393 incident T2D patients were identified, of whom, 3791 developed diabetes complications and 1335 died. We observed that air pollution was associated with different progression stages of T2D with different magnitudes. In a multivariate model, the hazard ratios [95% confidence interval (CI)] per interquartile range elevation in PM2.5 were 1.63 (1.59, 1.67) and 1.08 (1.03, 1.13) for transitions from healthy to T2D and from T2D to complications, and 1.50 (1.47, 1.53), 1.49 (1.36, 1.64), and 1.54 (1.35, 1.76) for mortality risk from baseline, T2D, and diabetes complications, respectively. Generally, we observed stronger estimates of four air pollutants on transition from baseline to incident T2D than those on other transitions. Moreover, we found significant associations between four air pollutants and mortality risk due to cancer and cardiovascular diseases from T2D or diabetes complications. The cumulative transition probability was generally higher among those with higher levels of air pollution exposure. CONCLUSIONS This study indicates that ambient air pollution exposure may contribute to increased risk of incidence and progressions of T2D, but to diverse extents for different progressions.

Abstract
Trichloroethylene (TCE) is one of the most widely distributed pollutants in groundwater and poses serious risks to the environment and human health. In this study, sulfidated nanoscale zero-valent iron (S-nZVI) materials with different Fe/S molar ratios were synthesized by one-step methods. These materials degraded TCE in groundwater and followed a pathway that did not involve the production of toxic byproducts such as dichloroethenes (DCEs) and vinyl chloride (VC). The effects of sulfur content on TCE dechlorination by S-nZVI were thoroughly investigated in terms of TCE-removal efficiency, H2 evolution, and reaction rate. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) characterizations confirmed Fe(0) levels in S-nZVI were larger than for zero-valent iron (nZVI). An Fe/S molar ratio of 10 provided the highest TCE-removal efficiencies. Compared with nZVI, the 24-h TCE removal efficiencies of S-nZVI (Fe/S = 10) increased from 30.2% to 92.6%, and the Fe(0) consumed during a side-reaction of H2 evolution dropped from 77.0% to 12.8%. This indicated the incorporation of sulfur effectively inhibited H2 evolution and allowed more Fe(0) to react with TCE. Moreover, the pseudo-first-order kinetic rate constants of S-nZVI materials increased by up to 485% compared to nZVI. In addition, a TCE degradation was proposed based on the variation of detected degradation products. Noting that acetylene, ethylene, and ethane were detected rather than DCEs and VC confirmed that TCE degradation followed β-elimination with acetylene as the intermediate. These results demonstrated that sulfide modification significantly enhanced nZVI performance for TCE degradation, minimized toxic-byproduct formation, and mitigated health risks. This work provides some insight into the remediation of chlorinated-organic-compound-contaminated groundwater and protection from secondary pollution during remediation by adjusting the degradation pathway.

Abstract
In this study, the effect of strip clear-cutting on the natural regeneration performance of mature Pinus tabuliformis plantations in the three locations in western part of the Liaoning Province was analyzed. Strip clear-cutting, with clear-cut and uncut strip widths of 15, 20, 25 m, and 10 and 18 m, respectively, was conducted in spring 2014, and control, in each study location. Field investigations were conducted in 2017. Fifteen sample plots with sizes of 4 m2 (2 m × 2 m) were established in each clear-cut strip, uncut strip, and control. One to four saplings were randomly selected to measure the current year increment, and the lengths and numbers for branch of the first whorl. Three saplings were randomly selected from the center of the strip to measure the photosynthetic rate. Three sample plots with sizes of 4 m2 (2 m × 2 m) and 1 m2 (1 m × 1 m) were developed in each strip and control to determine the biodiversity of shrubs and herbs as well as the water content of the decomposition and semi-decomposition layer. The results show that the current year increment and branch length of the first whorl can be ordered as follows: clear-cut strips > control > uncut strips. Number of the branches of the first whorl can be ordered as follows: clear-cut strips > uncut strips > control. Strip clear-cutting was a statistically significant treatment for the current year increment and length and number of branches of the first whorl. The saplings from the clear-cut strip with a width of 25 m have the largest photosynthetic capacity compared with those from the other strips and control. The transpiration rates of the large, medium, and small saplings from clear-cut strips are the largest and those of saplings from the control are the smallest. The water content of the decomposition and semi-decomposition layer in the control is the highest, but no significant difference was confirmed between the strip clear-cutting approaches.

Abstract
Owing to containing high fraction of organic matter, the tannery sludge seemed to be fit for composting. Actually, it was intensively harmful to the environment, due to containing chromium (Cr). So it might undergo a long time of storage until finding a proper way to dispose it. In the storage period, it would expose the surrounding environment a risk via releasing Cr. In this study, an approach was proposed to minimize the amount of released Cr, and reveal the mechanism on immobilizing Cr. Collagen protein waste (CPW) was adopted to immobilize Cr, and it was evaluated via leaching experiment. The lowest leaching concentration of Cr was 12 mg/L, meeting the limits of related standard in China (GB 5085.3-2007, Tcr < 15 mg/L). Moreover, the compositions and functional groups of the optimum sample (12 mg/L) were also characterized, confirming that the dominant functional groups cross-linking with Cr were hydroxyl (-OH), carboxyl (-COOH), and epoxy (-COC). Importantly, density functional theory (DFT) calculation was also employed, suggesting that Cr was restrained by accepting electrons from O atoms donating by functional groups.

Abstract
Chemical park is regarded as a major contributor of VOCs emissions in China. Currently, a green and safe technology, microbial fuel cells (MFCs), is being developed for the VOCs abatement. Noting that effective electron transfer is critical to the MFC performance. In this work, flavin mononucleotide (FMN) was dosed as an electron shuttle to improve the removal of the typical toxic VOCs, toluene. The experimental results revealed that the performance of toluene removal and power generation were accelerated with the dosage of 0.2-2 μM FMN. With the addition of 1 μM FMN, the removal efficiency, the maximum output voltage and the coulombic efficiency of MFC were increased by 18.4%, 64.4% and 56.3%, respectively. However, a further increase in FMN concentration to 2 μM caused a reduction in the removal efficiency and coulombic efficiency. The images of scanning electron microscopy and confocal laser scanning microscopy showed that the presence of FMN greatly promoted the microbial growth and its activity. Furthermore, microbial community analysis also implied that the moderate dosage of FMN (0.2-1 μM) was beneficial for the growth of the typical exoelectrogens, Geobacter sp., and thus the coulombic efficiency was increased. In addition, an electron transfer pathway involving in cytochrome b, OMCs, cytochrome c, and MtrA was proposed based on the cyclic voltammetry analysis. This work will provide a fundamental theoretical support for its application of toxic VOCs abatement from the chemical park.

Abstract
Manures, storages for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), pollute soil and water as well as endanger human health. Recently, we have been searching a better solution to remove antibiotics and ARGs during aerobic composting. Here, the dynamics of chitosan addition on the profiles of 71 ARGs, bacterial communities, chlortetracycline (CTC), ofloxacin (OFX) were investigated in chicken manure composting and compared with zeolite addition. Chitosan addition effectively reduces antibiotics contents (CTC under detection limit, OFX 90.96%), amounts (18) and abundance (56.7%, 11.1% higher than zeolite addition) of ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) after 42 days composting. Network analysis indicated that a total of 27 genera strains assigned into 4 phyla (Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes) were the potential hosts of ARGs. Redundancy analysis (RDA) demonstrated that bacterial community succession is the main contributor in the variation of ARGs. Overall, chitosan addition may effect bacterial composition by influencing physic-chemical properties and the concentration of antibiotics, Cu2+, Zn2+ to reduce the risk of ARG transmission. This study gives a new strategy about antibiotics and ARGs removal from composting on the basis of previous studies.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the effect of atractylenolide-1 (ATL-Ⅰ) on alveolar macrophages in silicosis patients. Methods: In December 2019, 12 male silicosis patients treated in Beidaihe Sanatorium for Chinese Coal Miners from July to September 2019 were selected by random sampling. Their alveolar macrophages were collected and divided into control group, ATL-Ⅰ group (100 μmol/L) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) group (100 μmol/L) . The exprossion levels of inflammatory factor interleukin-1β (IL-1β) , interleukin-6 (IL-6) , tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The expression levels of autophagy associated protein microtubule associated protein light chain 3 (LC3) , autophagy substrate protein p62, lysosome associated membrane protein 2 (LAMP2) , apoptosis associated protein Cleaved caspase-3, nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) and its phosphorylated form (p-NF-κB) were detected by Western blot. Results: Compared with the control group and DMSO group, the expression levels of IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α in alveolar macrophages decreased significantly in the ATL-Ⅰ group (P<0.05) , and the expression levels of p-NF-κB, the ratio of LC3-Ⅱ/LC3-Ⅰ also decreased significantly in the ATL-Ⅰ group (P<0.05) . However, the expression levels of NF-κB, LAMP2, p62 and Cleaved caspase-3 in the ATL-Ⅰ group were not statistically different from those in the control group and DMSO group (P>0.05) . There was no statistically significant differences in the expression of the above indexes between the control group and DMSO group (P>0.05) . Conclusion: ATL-Ⅰ may reduce the release of inflammatory factors from alveolar macrophages and inhibit the activity of autophagy in silicosis patients, but it may not reduce the level of apoptosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) often have Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) symptoms. This study aimed to prospectively investigate the effect of endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) on improvement of Eustachian tube function in CRS patients with ETD from a Chinese population and determine factors associated with improvement. METHODS A prospective study was performed in CRS patients with ETD who underwent ESS from 3 tertiary medical centers in south China. The Eustachian tube Dysfunction Questionnaire 7 (ETDQ-7), Sinonasal Outcome Test 22 (SNOT-22), tympanograms, endoscopic findings and Valsalva maneuver were recorded and analyzed preoperatively and postoperatively at 8-12 weeks. RESULTS A total of 70 CRS patients with ETD were included in this study. The ETDQ-7 score and the ability of positive Valsalva maneuver in CRS patients were significantly improved postoperatively at 8-12 weeks. The number of patients with type A tympanogram was increased postoperatively. Reduced Eustachian tube mucosal inflammation was also observed postoperatively. In addition, ESS appeared to reverse slight tympanic membrane atelectasis after 8-12 weeks. Moreover, improvement in tympanogram was presented in more than half of CRS patients with concomitant otitis media with effusion postoperatively at 8-12 weeks. Univariate and multivariate analysis revealed failure of normalization of ETDQ-7 postoperatively was associated with concomitant allergic rhinitis and higher preoperative SNOT-22 score. CONCLUSIONS This study confirms Eustachian tube function is often improved after ESS in CRS patients with ETD. Concomitant allergic rhinitis and higher preoperative SNOT-22 score are associated with failure of normalization of ETD symptoms.

Abstract
Objective: To study the effect of occupational exposure to non-steady state noise on hearing loss in the general equipment manufacturing industry, and to explore the feasibility of applying kurtosis index to evaluate hearing loss caused by non-steady state noise. Methods: A total of 233 workers exposed to non-steady state noise in 6 general equipment manufacturing enterprises were selected as the observation group, and 237 workers exposed to steady noise in 4 textile enterprises were selected as the control group between 2012 and 2018. Personal normalized continuous A-weighted sound pressure level equivalent to an 8 h-working-day (L(Aeq, 8 h)) was determined by a noise dosimeter. Cumulation noise exposure (CNE) was calculated from L(Aeq, 8 h) and related working age, and the CNE was adjusted by using noise kurtosis (CNE' after adjustment) . Meanwhile, questionnaires and hearing loss tests were performed for all subjects. The changes in the threshold of high-frequency hearing and the incidence of high-frequency hearing loss caused by noise in the two groups were compared before and after the adjustment of the kurtosis of CNE. The correlation between CNE and the incidence of high-frequency hearing loss before and after kurtosis adjustment was analyzed. Results: There was an difference between the 3000-8000 Hz hearing threshold of workers in different CNE groups (P<0.05) . logistic regression analysis showed that CNE was a risk factor of high-frequency hearing loss for workers in the observation group (OR=1.189, P<0.05) , and trend Chi-square test showed that the incidence of high-frequency hearing loss increased with CNE levels (χ(2)(trend)=34.415, P<0.05) .Before the kurtosis adjustment, in the CNE 95~<110 dB (A) ·year level group, the incidence of high-frequency hearing loss and the high-frequency hearing threshold in the observation group were significantly higher than those in the control group (P<0.05) . After kurtosis adjustment, there was no significant difference in the incidence of high-frequency hearing loss between the observation group and the control group in each level group (P>0.05) . The correlation between CNE after kurtosis adjustment and the incidence of high-frequency hearing loss was better than that before adjustment (after R(2) adjustment >before R(2) adjustment) . Conclusion: The effect of non-steady state noise on high-frequency hearing loss of workers in general equipment industry increases with the increase of CNE, and the effect of non-steady state noise on high-frequency hearing loss of workers is greater than that of steady noise. CNE' can be used to evaluate the hearing loss caused by non-steady state noise.

Background
Psychological stress is associated with high incidence of coronary heart disease and increases the risk of mortality and poor health status. Although a few studies have investigated psychological stress in this population, this problem is usually unrecognized and untreated in most Chinese patients with acute coronary syndrome. There is insufficient information regarding the features of psychological stress and associated factors among this population.
Purpose
This study aimed to assess the level of psychological stress and to identify its correlates in Chinese patients with acute coronary syndrome.
Methods
Patients aged over 18 years and with acute coronary syndrome were invited to participate in a cross-sectional survey in two tertiary public hospitals in China, from June to July 2019. A total of 332 patients completed measures of sociodemographic and clinical characteristics, psychological stress (10-item Perceived Stress Scale), and illness perception (Brief Illness Perceptions Questionnaire). Independent sample t-tests, bivariate correlations, and multivariable linear regression were performed to analyze potential correlates, including age, gender, education level, employment status, income, episode of illness, revascularization procedure, comorbidities, body mass index, blood pressure, blood glucose, blood lipids, and illness perception.
Results
The average patient age was 62.2 years, 67.5% were male, and 54.2% had less than high school education. The mean score for psychological stress was 21.30 ± 3.99 and 66.9% of patients had high psychological stress (score ≥ 20). Multivariable regression analysis showed that being overweight/obesity versus normal weight (body mass index: ≥ 24 kg/m2 versus < 24 kg/m2) was associated with lower psychological stress (β = -0.134, p = 0.007). Having a high level of fasting blood glucose (≥ 6.1 mmol/L) versus normal fasting blood glucose (< 6.1 mmol/L) was associated with high psychological stress (β = 0.123, p = 0.017). Additionally, negative cognitive illness perception (β = 0.190, p = 0.01), negative emotional illness perception (β = 0.290, p < 0.001), and poor illness understanding (β = 0.118, p = 0.032) were associated with high psychological stress.
Conclusions
Patients with acute coronary syndrome experience high psychological stress that is significantly correlated with body mass index, fasting blood glucose, and illness perception. Health professionals should recognize this issue and interventions looking to relive psychological stress may benefit from targeting these correlates.

Abstract
Background:Serum fibrotic markers for systemic sclerosis (SSc) remain limited. The Enhanced Liver Fibrosis (ELF) score, originally derived and validated in patients with chronic liver disease, is an algorithm combining 3 serum markers, known as procollagen type III amino terminal propeptide (PIIINP), tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases 1 (TIMP-1), and hyaluronic acid (HA). The combined score was proved to be superior to the single components in reflecting the severity of liver fibrosis. However, the performance of ELF score and its components has not been fully validated in SSc.Objectives:To investigate PIIINP, TIMP-1, HA, and the combined algorithm ELF score as fibrotic markers for SSc skin involvement.Methods:Eighty SSc patients (44 dcSSc and 36 lcSSc), fulfilling the 2013 ACR/EULAR criteria with the absence of chronic liver diseases, were enrolled. Eighty age- and sex- matched healthy controls were also included. Serum PIIINP and HA levels were quantified by chemiluminescence immunoassay. Serum TIMP-1 levels were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The ELF score was calculated using the formula ELF score= 2.494 + 0.846*ln(HA) + 0.735*ln(PIIINP) + 0.391*ln(TIMP-1). Results were correlated with clinical profiles including modified Rodnan skin score (mRSS) and interstitial lung disease (ILD).Results:Compared with healthy controls, patients with SSc showed significantly elevated serum PIIINP (11.2±4.8 vs. 5.73±1.4μg/L, p<0.001), TIMP-I (123.7±78.6 vs. 67.8±26.5 ng/ml, p<0.001), and ELF score (10.5±0.9 vs. 9.7±0.4, P<0.001). Even higher levels of PIIINP, TIMP-1, and ELF score were observed in dcSSc patients, compared with lcSSc patients (p<0.001, p=0.024, p=0.003, respectively). No significant difference was found in the levels of serum HA between patients and controls. Strong correlations were observed between mRSS and ELF score (r=0.54, p<0.001), and between mRSS and PIIINP(r=0.62, p<0.001), whereas only weak correlations could be observed between mRSS and TIMP-1 (r=0.28, p=0.02), and between mRSS and HA (r=0.26, p=0.03). When stratified by ELF score, using cutoffs proposed for liver fibrosis and cirrhosis, SSc patients with ELF<9.8 showed the lowest mRSS on average, while patients with ELF>11.3 showed the highest (p<0.001). When stratified by serum PIIINP levels, using the 25th and 75th percentiles, SSc patients with serum PIIIINP levels<7.8μg/L showed the lowest mRSS on average, while patients with PIIINP>14.0μg/L showed the highest (p<0.001). Neither the ELF score nor its components showed significant difference between patients with and without ILD.Conclusion:The ELF score could be used for reflecting the severity of overall skin involvement in SSc, and serum PIIINP also increased in parallel with the increase of mRSS. Abstract
Background:Interferon-inducible protein 16 (IFI-16) is constitutively expressed in vascular endothelial cells and can inhibit the proliferation of human endothelial cells and the formation of capillary-like structures in vitro. Anti-IFI-16 antibodies were reported in 21%-29% of patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) and were associated with digital vascular events in a few retrospective studies.Objectives:To evaluate the presence and the clinical implication of anti-IFI-16 antibodies in Chinese SSc cohort, focusing on the associations with vasculopathy indexes, and to investigate the predictive value of anti-IFI-16 antibodies for the development of digital ulcers (DUs) in SSc prospectively.Methods:Patients with SSc presenting to our center between July 2018 and September 2018 were prospectively enrolled. Serum from 42 SSc patients and 42 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were analyzed for anti-IFI-16 antibodies by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and was considered positive if the optical density (OD) value was above the mean OD of controls plus two standard deviations. Tissue immunofluorescence was used to evaluate the expression of IFI16 in skin biopsy samples obtained from SSc patients and normal controls. At baseline, nailfold video-capillaroscopy was performed to assess nailfold capillary density of SSc patients. Power Doppler ultrasound was used to grade finger pulp blood flow (0-no observed flow; 1-decreased flow; 2-normal flow), and to measure ulnar and radial artery blood flow and resistive index (RI). All patients were followed up for 6 months to see whether they experienced new onset or recurrent DUs. The association of anti-IFI-16 antibodies with DUs was analyzed using logistic regression.Results:Of the 42 SSc patients, 8 (19.0%) were positive for anti-IFI-16 antibodies. Immunofluorescence of skin biopsy samples from SSc patients exhibited enhanced staining of IFI-16 in the dermis, and colocalization with endothelial marker CD31. SSc patients who were positive for anti-IFI-16 antibodies showed higher ulnar artery RI at baseline (0.95±0.09 vs. 0.86±0.09, p=0.015), while no significant differences were found for other vascular parameters, nor for clinical or demographic profiles. Within 6-month follow-up, 14 (33.3%) patients experienced new-onset or recurrent DUs. Univariate logistic regression revealed the presence of DUs at enrollment (p=0.009), anti-IFI-16 antibody (p=0.012), finger pulp blood flow (p=0.027), and ulnar artery RI (p=0.008) could be the predictors for the development of DUs. Multivariate analysis further identified DUs at enrollment (odds ratio [OR]: 10.85; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.61-73.18; p=0.014) and anti-IFI-16 antibody (OR: 15.00; 95% CI: 1.13-199.18; p=0.040) as independent risk factors. Among patients without DUs at enrollment, new-onset ulcers occurred in 80% (4/5) and 4.5% (1/22) of those with and without anti-IFI-16 antibody, respectively (p=0.001).Conclusion:Anti-IFI-16 antibody is associated with vasculopathy in SSc and could be used as a novel biomarker for indicating the development of DUs.References:[1]McMahan ZH, Shah AA, Vaidya D, et al. Abstract
High pressure homogenization (HPH) offers new opportunities for food pasteurization/sterilization. Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus suspended in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) buffer, milk and apple juice at initial concentration of ~106 log10 CFU per ml were subjected to HPH treatments up to 200 MPa with inlet temperatures at 4-40°C. After HPH at 200 MPa with the inlet temperature at 40°C, the count of E. coli suspended in PBS, milk and apple juice reduced by 3·42, 3·67 and 3·19 log10 CFU per ml respectively while the count of S. aureus decreased by 2·21, 1·02 and 2·33 log10 CFU per ml respectively suggesting that S. aureus was more resistant. The inactivation data were well fitted by the polynomial equation. Milk could provide a protective effect for S. aureus against HPH. After HPH at 200 MPa with the inlet temperature at 20°C, the cell structure of E. coli was destroyed, while no obvious damages were found for S. aureus.

Abstract
Abstract
Purpose
The highly efficient degradation bacteria were selected from the humus from the very cold straw in China for many years to construct the in situ degradation bacteria, and the degradation efficiency of corn straw was determined by process optimization.
Methods
According to the main components of corn straw, through morphological, physiological, and biochemical screening, three highly efficient complementary degradation strains were selected to construct the compound flora, and the degradation efficiency was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, field emission scanning electron microscope, and X-ray diffractometer.
Result
The corn straw selected in this paper is mainly composed of cellulose (31.99%), hemicellulose (25.33%), and lignin (14.67%). Through the determination of enzyme activity, strain Streptomyces sp. G1T has high decomposition ability to cellulose and hemicellulose but weak utilization ability to lignin; strain Streptomyces sp. G2T has the strongest decomposition ability to cellulose and hemicellulose among the three strains. The decomposition ability of strain Streptomyces sp. G3T to lignin was the strongest among the three strains. Therefore, by compounding the three strains, the decomposition ability has been greatly improved. The optimal process conditions obtained by single factor and response surface method are as follows: pH is 7, temperature is 30 °C, inoculation amount is 5%, rotational speed is 210 rpm, and the weight loss rate of straw is 60.55% after decomposing for 7 days. A large amount of degradation of corn straw can be seen by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, field emission scanning electron microscope, and X-ray diffractometer.
Conclusion
Streptomyces sp. G1T, Streptomyces sp. G2T, and Streptomyces sp. G3T screened from straw humus in very cold areas were used to construct in situ degradation bacteria, which had good straw degradation activity and had the potential to be used for straw treatment in cold areas after harvest. This characteristic makes the complex bacteria become a strong competitive candidate for industrial production, and it is also an effective biotechnology in line with the current recycling of resources.

Abstract
Crop productivity in Albic soil is poor, owing to poor soil physicochemical properties. Mixing of Aw layers, representing Albic soil, with B layers, could improve the physicochemical properties of Albic soil, which is characterized by poor humus on the topsoil and high penetration resistance. The objective of the present study conducted in 2015–2016 in an Albic soil region in Heilongjiang province, China, was to explore the effects of different soil mixing strategies on the physicochemical properties of Albic soil and crop yield. There were four soil mixing treatments: conventional subsoiler (CS), three-stage subsoil mixing plough (TSMP), four-stage subsoil mixing plough (FSMP), and three-stage subsoil interval mixing plough (TSIMP). Our results demonstrated that the Aw layer bulk density of Albic soil under TSMP, FSMP, and TSIMP decreased significantly compared to that under CS. In addition, the total porosity of the soil under these treatments increased significantly in 2 years. Compared to the water holding capacity under the CS treatment, other treatments increased significantly in the Aw layer. Furthermore, soil penetration resistance of the Aw layer decreased following Aw and B layer mixing. All three soil mixing treatments also increased soil aggregate stability and cation exchange capacity but reduced soil organic carbon content in the Aw layer. Soil mixing increased soybean and maize seed yield. Overall, Aw and B layer mixing improved Albic soil structure and physiochemical properties and increased crop yield; thus, this mixing is a feasible approach for Albic soil improvement, with optimal improvements observed under the FMSP strategy, which also added organic substances to the Aw layer.

Abstract
Nitrogen (N) could affect storage root growth and development of sweet potato. To manage external N concentration fluctuations, plants have developed a wide range of strategies, such as growth changes and gene expression. Five sweet potato cultivars were used to analyse the functions of N in regulating storage root growth. Growth responses and physiological indicators were measured to determine the physiological changes regulated by different N concentrations. Expression profiles of related genes were analysed via microarray hybridization data and qRT-PCR analysis to reveal the molecular mechanisms of storage root growth regulated by different N concentrations. The growth responses and physiological indicators of the five cultivars were changed by N concentration. The root fresh weight of two of the sweet potato cultivars, SS19 and GS87, was higher under low N concentrations compared with the other cultivars. SS19 and GS87 were found to be having greater tolerance to low N concentration. The expression of N metabolism and storage root growth related genes was regulated by N concentration in sweet potato. These results reveal that N significantly regulated storage root growth. SS19 and GS87 were more tolerant to low N concentration and produced greater storage root yield (at 30 days). Furthermore, several N response genes were involved in both N metabolism and storage root growth.

Abstract
Inorganic matter modifications were used to improve the hydrophobic properties and slow-release effects of water-based copolymer films. Water-based copolymers were prepared by aqueous polymerization of polyvinyl alcohol, starch, chitosan, and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, and then, zeolite powder, volcanic ash or biochar were added to prepare the inorganic matter modified water-based copolymer films. The results showed that the inorganic matter modified water-based copolymer films had enhanced thermal stability, reductions in O-H and water vapour permeability, and increased crystallinity and roughness. Compared with water-based copolymer films, the water absorption capacities of the zeolite powder modified water-based copolymer films, volcanic ash modified water-based copolymer films, and biochar modified water-based copolymer films were reduced by 42.8 %, 50.0 % and 39.0 %, and their ammonium permeability was reduced by 53.0 %, 12.1 % and 1.1 %, respectively. Inorganic matter modified water-based copolymer films have properties that make them suitable for use in preparing slow-release coating materials.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
An increasing number of people are living with coronary heart disease (CHD) globally. Psychological conditions such as stress, depression, and anxiety are prevalent for people with CHD, which impose a great challenge for secondary prevention of CHD. Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs), which incorporate mindfulness skills and cognitive or behavioural therapy, are suggested as a promising approach to help patients with CHD to improve their psychological health. However, the effectiveness of MBIs for patients with CHD has not been systematically reviewed.
Purpose
To synthesise the evidence regarding the effects of MBIs on reducing perceived stress, depression, and anxiety in patients with CHD.
Methods
Search was conducted in seven English electronic databases and two Chinese electronic databases from inception to January 2019. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that evaluated the effects of MBIs on stress, depression, and anxiety in adults with CHD were included. Two reviewers independently screened records for eligibility, extracted data, and assessed risks of bias using the Cochrane tool. Meta-analysis was conducted by combining the standard mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence interval (CI) of post-intervention outcome measures using Review Manager Version 5.3. We used a fixed-effects model if no significant heterogeneity (I² < 50%), while in case of significant heterogeneity (50% < I² < 75%), we used a random-effects model.
Results
Six RCTs involving 473 participants were included. Five of all studies compared MBIs with inactive controls (i.e., usual care and waitlist control). The remaining study utilized a self-help group that received a booklet containing identical mindfulness information as an active control. There were high concerns about the risk of bias across studies, mainly in performance bias and detection bias. The meta-analysis of two studies showed MBIs may reduce perceived stress at post-intervention (SMD -0.82; 95% CI -1.28 to -0.36; P < 0.001; I² 0%) compared with inactive controls. Compared with active control, the single study did not observe a significant reduction of perceived stress in intervention group. The meta-analysis of five studies revealed that MBIs appear effective in reducing depression (SMD -1.08; 95% CI -1.28 to -0.87; P < 0.001; I² 22%) and anxiety (SMD -1.16; 95% CI -1.57 to -0.75; P < 0.001; I² 71%) immediately after intervention, compared with inactive or active controls.
Conclusions
The results of this review provide evidence for the effects of MBIs on reduction in perceived stress, depression and anxiety at post-intervention in patients with CHD. However, these findings need to be interpreted with caution given the small sample size and methodological limitations within included studies. Rigorous-designed research is urgently needed to further confirm the effectiveness of MBIs on improving psychological health and explore its sustainable effects in patients with CHD.

Abstract
AIM To translate the Compliance with Annual Diabetic Eye Exams Survey (CADEES) into Chinese, allowing assessment of its reliability and validity, and to identify variables that predict attendance at annual eye examinations. METHODS People with vision-threatening diabetic retinopathy were recruited from the Shanghai Diabetic Eye Study. The study involved three phases: (1) translation and cross-cultural adaptation, (2) a pilot study (n = 496) to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Chinese-CADEES, and (3) a primary cross-sectional survey (n = 3818) to assess self-reported attendance at annual eye examinations. Factors related to non-attendance were identified using univariate analysis, and then a multiple logistic regression model. Finally, a component model and individual item models were built to predict attendance. RESULTS The Chinese-CADEES had satisfactory reliability and validity. The issue of low attendance at annual eye examinations was serious. In addition to 13 health belief items, living in semi-urban suburban areas, shorter duration of diabetes, poor glucose control, lower education level, better presenting visual acuity and milder diabetic retinopathy diagnosis were significantly related to non-attendance. The multivariate predictive model was able to predict, with 64.7% accuracy, whether or not participants were going to attend annual eye examinations and explained ~ 11.3% of the variance in attendance. CONCLUSIONS The Chinese-CADEES showed good reliability and validity for predicting attendance at annual eye examinations in people with diabetic retinopathy. Clinicians and researchers can improve attendance by addressing modifiable characteristics and increasing education on diabetic retinopathy and the importance of eye health in people with diabetes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the role of miR-10b in the proliferation and apoptosis of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and to explore the underlying mechanism. PATIENTS AND METHODS The expression level of miR-10b in clinical AML cases and cell lines was detected by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). The interaction between miR-10b and homeobox D10 (HOXD10) was confirmed by qRT-PCR, Western blotting and Luciferase assay. The effect of miR-10b on biological functions of AML cell line (HL60) was analyzed in vitro. MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) assay and colony formation assay were used to detect the proliferation and colony formation ability of AML cells, respectively. Meanwhile, flow cytometry and TUNEL staining were applied to measure cell cycle and apoptosis of AML cells, respectively. RESULTS miR-10b was significantly up-regulated in AML cases and cell lines. The potential target genes of miR-10b were analyzed by three public databases. Results showed that HOXD10 was a direct target of miR-10b. QRT-PCR, Western blotting and luciferase assay confirmed the regulatory effect of miR-10b on HOXD10. Overexpression of miR-10b accelerated the proliferation and colony formation ability of AML cells. Meanwhile, miR-10b overexpression decreased the percentage of AML cells in the G0/G1 phase when compared with S phase, and suppressed the apoptosis of AML cells. However, the addition of HOXD10 could reverse the effects of miR-10b. CONCLUSIONS MiR-10b could regulate the proliferation, colony formation, cell cycle and apoptosis of AML cells through targeting HOXD10, indicating that miR-10b might be a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of AML.

Abstract
The quantum criticality of an Ising-like screw chain antiferromagnet SrCo_{2}V_{2}O_{8}, with a transverse magnetic field applied along the crystalline a axis, is investigated by ultralow temperature NMR measurements. The Néel temperature is rapidly and continuously suppressed by the field, giving rise to a quantum critical point (QCP) at H_{C_{1}}≈7.03 T. Surprisingly, a second QCP at H_{C_{2}}≈7.7 T featured with gapless excitations is resolved from both the double-peak structure of the field-dependent spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/^{51}T_{1} at low temperatures and the weakly temperature-dependent 1/^{51}T_{1} at this field. Our data, combined with numerical calculations, suggest that the induced effective staggered transverse field significantly lowers the critical fields, and leads to an exposed QCP at H_{C_{2}}, which belongs to the one-dimensional transverse-field Ising universality.

Abstract
Carotenoids are ubiquitous constituents of living organisms. These structurally diverse pigments have received considerable attention due to their biotechnological applications and potential beneficial effects on human health. In this study, we characterized an over-producing β-carotene mutant of Sporidiobolus pararoseus, obtained by ultraviolet mutagenesis, named MuY9. We compared the transcriptome between the wild-type and MuY9. A total of 348 differential expressed genes (DEGs) were found, and only one DEG crtYB is involved in carotenoid biosynthesis. The overproduction of β-carotene in MuY9 should be attributed to the up-regulation of crtYB. Functional identification of crtYB was performed using heterologous complementation in Escherichia coli. Our findings indicate that the enzymatic conversions of geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate to phytoene, as well as lycopene to β-carotene, are catalyzed by this CrtYB. Furthermore, our insights into the crtYB gene should facilitate a more detailed understanding of the carotenogenic pathway in S. pararoseus, and advance the development of the genetic engineering for the bio-production of carotenoids.
