Abstract
Background and Objective Intramedullary tuberculoma (IMT) of the conus medullaris is an extremely rare tumour that constitutes a diagnostic and management challenge in a resource-limited setting. We report a case of conus medullaris, IMT in a young immunocompetent, patient with no prior clinical features of pulmonary or extra-pulmonary tuberculosis. Case Summary The patient presented with six months history of progressive and persistent mid back pain and slight weakness of both lower limbs of 3 months duration. Physical examination revealed a well-nourished man with power of 3/5 and hyperreflexia on both lower limbs. Chest radiograph and other investigations for tuberculosis were negative. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the lumbosacral spine showed fusiform expansion of the conus medullaris, with a well circumscribed, ring enhancing, intramedullary mass straddle between T12 and L1. Patient had gross total resection with no intraoperative monitoring assistance and no post-operative worsening of neurological function. Histology showed granulomatous lesion with central caseation in keeping with a tuberculoma. Patient was commenced on post-operative anti-tuberculous therapy with physiotherapy, with full motor recovery at six months post-surgical intervention and anti-tuberculous therapy. Conclusion Intramedullary tuberculoma can be considered as one of the differential diagnoses of intradural, intramedullary tumour of the conus, even in immunocompetent individual with no clinical features of tuberculosis.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The vulva and vagina are of great significance to womanhood owing to the myriads of specialized functions they perform. The diseases of this organ have physical, social, mental, and psychological ramifications. The aim of this work is to study the pathological pattern and clinical presentation of diseases of the vulva and vagina at the Department of Anatomical Pathology and Forensic Medicine of the Jos University Teaching Hospital between 1st January 2011 and December 31st, 2020. METHODOLOGY This study is descriptive of all cases of histologically diagnosed vulval and vaginal lesions seen at the Center. Histological diagnosis, biodata, and clinical information of patients were retrieved from the medical records. Data realized were analyzed and presented in tables as simple frequencies, percentages, ranges, and measures of central tendencies. RESULTS Two hundred and fifteen vulval and vaginal biopsies were included in the study. Squamous cell carcinoma was the commonest histologically diagnosed lesion accounting for 70(32.6%) cases of all lesions and 77.8% of all malignancies. The second commonest lesion and the most frequent benign pathology is the Condyloma acuminatum (viral warts) which accounted for 41(19.1%) cases. The age bracket 20 to 59 years constituted 79.5% of cases (171 cases). The age range, mean, median, and mode in years were 5.0-85.0, 39.5+15.9, 38.0, and 50.0 respectively. CONCLUSION Squamous cell carcinoma and veneral warts are the commonest lesions of the vulva and vagina in our environment. Robust vaccination programs against the etiological agent, the human papilloma virus is highly recommended.

Abstract
This study aims to enhance the latent heat storage properties of the microcapsules by altering the amount of crosslinking agent from 3 to 20%w/w, the core-to-shell ratio from 1:1 to 2:1, and the amount of initiator from 1 to 3%. The phase change material n-tetradecane (C-14) was microencapsulated by using poly (methyl methacrylate -co- methacrylic acid) as a shell material through an oil by water-seeded emulsion polymerisation technique. The structural, morphological, and thermal properties of microcapsules were evaluated by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis. The average particle size of the microcapsules ranges from 01 to 15 µm. The results showed that the microcapsules have a higher melting enthalpy value of 127.3 ± 0.06 J/g with a microencapsulation efficiency of 66.72% when a 20% w/w crosslinker was used. The thermal stability of the phase change material (PCM) was increased by ∼30 ± 2 °C by encapsulation.

Abstract
Abstract
Introduction/Objective
Papillary Thyroid cancers (PTC) are the commonest malignancy of this organ and seen more often in females. Estrogen Receptor (ER) is important in the pathogenesis of the disease and impacts on the prognosis. The aim is to establish ER status of PTC seen at the Jos University Teaching Hospital and other health institutions in Jos Metropolis.
Methods/Case Report
This was a hospital based, retrospective multicenter study. The biodata of histologically diagnosed PTC were obtained from surgical pathology cancer registries and archived histology request forms between 1st January 1998 and 31st December, 2020. Archival slides and fresh sections from tissue blocks were reviewed, classified and subjected to immunohistochemistry (polymer technique). They were scored (using Allred scoring system) and data analyzed using SPSS-20.
Results (if a Case Study enter NA)
A total of 53 (56%) cases of histologically diagnosed PTC out of 95 cases of thyroid cancers were included in the study. The mean, mode, median and age range were 44.7±15.4 years, 45 years, 43 years and 13-80 years respectively. Majority of cases were females (81.1%), this was replicated across all age groups. Out of the total number of PTC cases recorded, 36 (67.9%) were classical variant while the remaining 17 (32.1%) were follicular variants. Nine cases (17%) were positive for ER while 44 (83%) were negative. Out of the positive cases, 7 (77.8%) were females with 2 (22.2%) males. The total scores assigned to positive cases were 3 (66.7%) and 4 (33.3%) and were predominant in females in the 4th decade.
Conclusion
Majority of PTC were seen in females and were negative for ER. This suggest that very few of our patients are likely to benefit from selective estrogen receptor targeted therapy and therefore Surgery, Chemotherapy and Radioiodine therapy remain the main stay of treatment for most cases in our locality.

Abstract
Background Cystic ovarian lesions are defined by an ovarian fluid containing space limited by a membrane. The exact prevalence of the disease is unknown. A proper diagnosis is imperative for the choice of appropriate therapy. The objective of this study is to establish the different histological variants of ovarian cysts diagnosed at the Histopathology Department of Jos University Teaching Hospital between January 1, 2000, and December 31, 2019. Methodology This is a descriptive study of consecutive cases of ovarian cysts at the Jos University Teaching Hospital, Jos, Nigeria between January 1, 2000, and December 31, 2019. Demographic and histopathologic data were collated from patients' request forms and duplicate copies of histology reports of all histologically diagnosed cases of ovarian cysts at the Histopathology Department during the study period. Result A total of 236cases of cystic ovarian lesions were seen during the period of the study. Benign and malignant cases constituted 226(95.76%) and 10(4.24%) cases respectively. Corpus luteum cyst was the commonest histological type accounting for 28.33% of cases. Lesions located on the right ovary were 145(61.44%), while those on the left were 95(40.25%). The commonest symptom was abdominal pain. The age range was 4-70years, with a mean, median and mode of 35.02+11.9 years, 33.0 years, and 35.0 years respectively. Conclusion The vast majority of ovarian cysts in our environment are benign, and commonly occurs in women during their reproductive age. Abdominal pain is the commonest presentation and cysts of the ovary occur more on the right.

Abstract
Introduction Laboratory turnaround time is defined as the time between the receipt of a sample in the laboratory and when the report is ready for collection/dispatch. It is a critical component of the quality assurance of a laboratory and has been identified as a key performance indicator of laboratory performance. This study is aimed at evaluating the turnround time in the histopathology unit of our center and comparing the findings with that of similar studies. Methodology This was a prospective descriptive study of the first 500 consecutive samples of surgical biopsies submitted for analyses at the Histopathology Department of the Jos University Teaching Hospital. The samples were tracked from the reception desk, where they are submitted to the dispatch point where the results are collected by clients. The grossing time (T1), processing time (T2), reporting time (T3), and the transcription time (T4) were recorded for each sample. The data obtained were analyzed using SPSS software and presented as simple frequencies and percentages. Results The mean laboratory turnaround time was 7.5 + 9.7 days with a range of 3-18 days. As much as 20.8% of reports were ready for dispatch by day 3 and 100% by day 18. Overall, the grossing time (T1), processing time (T2), reporting time (T3), and transcription (T4) time consumed 17.5%, 35.5%, 27.7%, and 19.3% of the total time spent, respectively. Conclusion We recommend the development of practicable targets for the histopathology laboratories as regards timeliness. This should be regularly evaluated to ensure compliance and improvement of service quality in this regard.

Abstract
Background Heterotopia of pancreatic tissue in the thorax and mediastinum is uncommon, although, a common developmental anomaly in the gastrointestinal tract where the aberrant tissue is a component of gastrointestinal duplication cysts, intralobular pulmonary sequestration or teratomas. Case presentation We report a case of an ectopic pancreas located in a giant mediastinal cyst in a 2-year old girl who presented with severe dyspnoea due to external compression of the intra-thoracic structures, mainly the right main bronchus. Surgical resection was carried out with complete relief of symptoms. The cyst was confirmed histopathologically to contain pancreatic tissue. Literature review showed that this is an uncommon presentation hence the need to report the case. Conclusion Heterotopia of the pancreas although, an uncommon occurrence in the thorax and mediastinum, should be considered when dealing with cystic lesions of the mediastinum and surgery plays an important role in its management. Abstract
BACKGROUND Adenomyosis is defined by the presence within the myometrium of benign endometrial glands and stroma. Several theories have evolved to explain the pathogenesis of adenomyosis. A third of adenomyosis cases are asymptomatic. Symptoms are however non-specific and are generally related to abnormal vaginal bleeding, pain, infertility, and feeling of pelvic mass. Adenomyosis do coexist with other pathological entities. Diagnosis is achieved through imaging and histology. Treatment could be medical, surgical or a combination of both. The objective of this study was to analyze diagnosed st stcases of adenomyosis, between 1 January 2007, and 31 December 2013 at the Jos University Teaching Hospital in relation to patient's age, common symptoms, and coexisting utero-cervical pathologies. METHODOLOGY The data from the Medical Records department, Radiology department, and Histopathology department at the Jos University Teaching Hospital, Jos, were mobilized. The information retrieved for each case included: age, symptoms, and coexisting utero-cervical lesions. Archival slides were reviewed to histologically confirm the diagnosis of adenomyosis. In cases with missing slides, archival tissue blocks were retrieved, sectioned into 5µm slides, stained with haematoxylin and eosin, and reviewed microscopically to confirm the diagnosis of adenomyosis. RESULTS One hundred and fifty seven (157) cases of adenomyosis were diagnosed at the Jos University Teaching Hospital. All cases were histologically diagnosed retrospectively after hysterectomy. The cases were divided into two broad groups: 107(68.2%) cases with adenomyosis only (A), and 50(31.8%) with coexistence of adenomyosis and leiomyoma (AL). The mean age for the general study population was 43.57+8.56, while those for A and AL groups were 44.37+9.12, and 41.86+6.99 respectively. The age group 41-50 years had the highest number of cases in both the A and AL groups: 53(49.5%) and 21(42.0%) cases respectively. The most frequent symptom was menorrhagia, occurring in 87(81.3%), 43(86.0%), and 130(82.8%) cases in the A, AL, and general population respectively. CONCLUSION Adenomyosis is commoner in the fourth decade of life. It commonly coexists with leiomyoma with menorrhagia being the most frequent symptom. Retrospective histology after a hysterectomy is the diagnostic tool for the disease in our center.

Abstract
Choriocarcinoma metastasizes widely. One in every ten choriocarcinoma that leaves its primary site, metastasizes to the brain. This 27 years old patient presented with symptoms of space occupying lesion that was confirmed by CT-SCAN. There was no history of vaginal bleeding and amenorrhoea was concealed by unmarried patient. Chest X-ray was normal. Tumor was excised after craniotomy. Histology of tumor was that of secondary choriocarcinoma. Patient responded excellently to chemotherapy and was well one year after. We strongly recommend a high index of suspicion of choriocarcinoma in management of brain tumors. β-HCG assay should be included in investigation of all patients with intracranial tumors irrespective of sex.

Abstract
Severe mandibular alveolar ridge resorption is usually observed in patients with long-term edentulism and/or ill-fitting dentures. In some of these patients, the genial tubercles project into the floor of the mouth as a high point in the anterior area of the mandibular residual ridge. The lingual flanges of mandibular stock impression trays usually impinge on the most prominent areas of the resorbed mandibular edentulous ridge (i.e., internal oblique lines and genial tubercles). It is suggested that a preliminary custom tray be made in such cases to pour an initial impression so that individual custom trays can be fabricated. An efficient method for constructing such a custom impression tray from readily available materials is described.
