Abstract
Climate change, together with the ecological droughts suffered by a large part of the European Union's territory, calls for joint environmental solutions. In this regard, water reclamation is a promising way to alleviate the pressure on existing water resources. However, reuse strategies are penalized by the extra energy consumed in urban wastewater treatment plants (UWWTPs), facilities mainly powered by fossil fuels. The opportunity to integrate renewable sources of energy into the energy-intensive UWWTPs holds great promise towards decarbonization of the sector. In this context, the energy harvested from a Salinity Gradient (SGE) has attracted great interest in the last decade. This work aims at the analysis of opportunity of implementing integrated processes for water reclamation and SGE recovery in the coastal EU UWWTPs. According to the selection criteria, a total of 281 potential sites located across eighteen coastal countries of the EU have been inventoried attending to the current state of the art. The water reclamation potential has been estimated at 3.7 million m3/day. As a consequence, the environmental burdens of the reclamation process could result in the reduction of 1.5·105 t CO2/year. The Mediterranean region, highly affected by hydrological drought, has proved to be a hot spot for water reclamation, with the highest number of plants inventoried in the study and a predicted potential for SGE harvesting of 60 Wh/m3 of reclaimed water. These results highlight a niche of opportunities to encourage water reclamation, avoid water bodies' degradability due to effluent discharge and the further decarbonization of reclamation processes.

Abstract
Despite a multimodal radical treatment, mortality of advanced epithelial ovarian cancer (AEOC) remains high. Host-related factors, such as systemic inflammatory response and its interplay with the immune system, remain underexplored. We hypothesized that the prognostic impact of this response could vary between patients undergoing primary debulking surgery (PDS) and those undergoing interval debulking surgery (IDS). Therefore, we evaluated the outcomes of two surgical groups of newly diagnosed AEOC patients according to the neutrophil, monocyte and platelet to lymphocyte ratios (NLR, MLR, PLR), taking median ratio values as cutoffs. In the PDS group (n = 61), low NLR and PLR subgroups showed significantly better overall survival (not reached (NR) vs. 72.7 months, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 40.9-95.2, p = 0.019; and NR vs. 56.1 months, 95% CI: 40.9-95.2, p = 0.004, respectively) than those with high values. Similar results were observed in progression free survival. NLR and PLR-high values resulted in negative prognostic factors, adjusting for residual disease, BRCA1/2 status and stage (HR 2.48, 95% CI: 1.03-5.99, p = 0.043, and HR 2.91, 95% CI: 1.11-7.64, p = 0.03, respectively). In the IDS group (n = 85), ratios were not significant prognostic factors. We conclude that NLR and PLR may have prognostic value in the PDS setting, but none in IDS, suggesting that time of surgery can modulate the prognostic impact of baseline complete blood count (CBC).

Abstract
Clean water and sanitation for the world population is one of the most important challenges established by the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations since worldwide, one in three people do not have access to safe drinking water. Groundwater, one of the main sources of fresh water, has been considerably damaged by human activities. Nevertheless, while numerous plants are globally aimed at removing pollutants from surface waters, a much scarcer number of facilities have focused on groundwater remediation. Nowadays, there is increasing concern about the presence of nitrates (NO3-) in groundwaters as a consequence of the intensive use of fertilizers and other anthropogenic sources, such as sewage or industrial wastewater discharge. In this context, the selection and development of highly effective and low-cost solutions for the sustainable management of groundwater resources need to be addressed. Thus, this work collects data from the literature regarding the presence of nitrates in groundwater, and, simultaneously, it reviews the main alternatives available to remove NO3- from groundwater sources. A total of 292 sites have been analyzed categorized by continents, carefully discussing the possible origins of nitrate pollution. In addition, a discussion is carried out of the different technologies currently employed to treat groundwater, highlighting the progress made and the main challenges to be overcome. Finally, the review gathers the data available in the literature for nitrate treatment plants at full-scale.

Abstract
Background and purpose Synchronous bilateral breast cancer (SBBC) accounts for 1–3.5% of breast cancer patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate dosimetric issues, clinical outcomes, and acute toxicities for SBBC patients receiving synchronous bilateral hypofractionated radiotherapy (SBHRT) and to compare them with patients treated with synchronous bilateral normofractionated RT schedule (SBNRT). Materials and methods From April 2016 to March 2020, 39 SBBC patients were referred to our institution. Patients were divided according to their prescription dose: Group A: 50 Gy/25fx (fractions), B: 60–64 Gy/25fx, C: 40.05 Gy/15fx; D: 48 Gy/15fx. Toxicity was evaluated using Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events (CTCAE)v.5.0. Results 34 patients were finally evaluated. Median follow-up was 24 months for NF schedule and 9 months for HF schedule. In the HF schedule, no acute side-effects > G2 were observed and no dermatitis was reported in 6th month´s assessments. 95% of patients have no evidence of disease and only 1 patient presented local relapse in the first mammography after RT. No distant failures or deaths were observed. Regarding dosimetric issues, the inter-patient average Dmean for the heart was: Group A: 5.0 Gy (4.6–5.5), Group B: 4.4 Gy (4.1–5.4), Group C: 4.8 Gy (4.5–5.1) and Group D: 5.3 Gy (4.4–5.6). For the lungs, the inter-patient average Dmean was: Group A: 10.8 Gy (9.8–12.2), Group B: 11.5 Gy (11.3–12), Group C: 9.8 Gy (9.3–10.5) and Group D: 10.5 Gy (10–11.3). Conclusions This is the first study reporting the safety, feasibility, and tolerability of 40.05 Gy/15fx over 3 weeks for the treatment of SBBC patients. Further study with larger accrual is mandatory.

Abstract
Simple Summary Embryo transfer has been successfully used for the conservation of equine endangered species, but a number of factors may affect the outcome of these techniques in mares. However, only a few studies have evaluated these factors in donkeys. The present study was conducted to determine which factors affect the recovery rate, morphological quality, and diameter in embryos from Andalusian donkey jennies. According to our results, the factors affecting embryo recovery rate were donor jenny, donor age, successive cycle within donor, number of flushings, and jack. Day of flushing and number of flushings had an effect on embryo diameter, whereas donor jenny and day of flushing had an effect on embryo quality. The knowledge of these factors is crucial to achieve a higher efficiency of embryo transfer in endangered donkey breeds. Abstract Embryo transfer and the vitrification of embryos could be used for the conservation and recovery of endangered donkey breeds. It is important to develop techniques that optimize recovery rates and the cryotolerance of donkey embryos. This study evaluates factors affecting the recovery rate, quality, and diameter of embryos obtained from donor jennies as a starting point for the use of vitrification and embryo transfer in the conservation of the Andalusian donkey. A total of 100 embryos were recovered out of 124 estrous cycles (80.6%). The donor jenny affected the rates of positive flushings (PFR; p = 0.040) and embryo recovery (ERR; p < 0.05) as well as embryo quality (p = 0.004). ERR was also affected by the number of flushings (p < 0.001), donor age (p < 0.05), successive cycle within donor (p < 0.001), and jacks (p < 0.05). Number of flushings (p < 0.001) and jack (p < 0.05) had a significant effect on PFR, whereas the day of flushing influenced the developmental stage (p < 0.001), embryo quality (p < 0.05), and diameter of embryos (p < 0.001). The number of flushings significantly influenced the diameter (p = 0.038) and embryo developmental stage (p = 0.001), whereas the developmental stage was statistically different between herds (p = 0.020). The factors influencing the success of this assisted reproductive technique were donor jenny, donor age, successive cycle within donor, day of flushing, number of flushings, and jack. The identification of these key points is crucial to achieve a higher efficiency of embryo transfer and vitrification processes, before considering their application in the conservation of endangered donkey breeds.

PURPOSE To study the control graphs applicability for the geometric uncertainties of VMAT treatments in prostate cancer patients, and their use to verify the hypothesis of the data obtained randomness, to apply the margins of Van Herk expression. MATERIAL AND METHODS During the first 5 days of treatment, and then once a week, a Kv CBCT was performed, compared with the simulation CT and adjusted the displacements, to determine the inter-fraction errors. Immediately after radiation therapy, another CBCT was performed (for intra-fraction errors). With these data, the X, R position control charts have been made. The patients, not maintained the deviations within the charts control limits, were called "anomalies". Then, we compared the deviations and margins calculated with the van Herk expression for all patients and for those without anomalies. RESULTS The margins determined show appreciable differences if there were calculated for the total set of patients or for the set of them without anomalies in the control charts. For the overall set of patients, the lateral, longitudinal, and vertical margins were 0.45 cm, 0.52 cm, 0.56 cm, while for the set of patients without anomalies were 0.29 cm, 0.35 cm, and 0.38 cm. CONCLUSIONS The use of control charts allows tracking geometric deviations both inter and intra-fraction, variability real-time control and to detect situations in which it can change for non-random reasons, and require immediate investigation. Maintaining geometric deviations in the control state decreases the margins needed to administer a high dose to CTV in a high percentage of cancer prostate patients.

Abstract
Embryo biopsy for fetal sexing has clinical application, but few reports are available of its use within an active embryo transfer program. We evaluated results on biopsy of 459 embryos over one breeding season. There were no significant differences in pregnancy rate between biopsied and non-biopsied embryos (72% vs 73%) or for biopsied embryos recovered at the centre (73%) compared with those shipped overnight (72%). However, the pregnancy rate decreased significantly in shipped embryos biopsied ≥20h after collection. Overall, 86% of biopsies provided a sex diagnosis. The likelihood of a positive genomic (g) DNA result was significantly higher for biopsies from large blastocysts (96%) than from smaller embryos (70-85%). In total, 38% of biopsies were positive for Y chromosome DNA (Y-DNA) and were diagnosed as male. Subsequently, 95% of Y-DNA-positive embryos were confirmed as male and 78% of Y-DNA-negative embryos were confirmed as female. The accuracy of prediction of female (Y-DNA negative) was significantly higher when the biopsy sample was probed for Y-DNA only compared with probing for both gDNA and Y-DNA. We estimate that by transferring only Y-DNA-negative embryos, 3% of potential female pregnancies may have been lost, and production of male pregnancies was reduced by 72%.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to compare the effects of two warming protocols (three-step vs. one-step dilution) on embryo quality, post-warming embryo survival and embryo cell viability of donkey embryos vitrified by the Cryotop method. Twenty, Day 7-8, grade 1-2 donkey embryos were measured, morphologically evaluated and vitrified using the Cryotop technique. Embryos were then randomly warmed using two different warming procedures: (i) W3 (three-step dilution; n = 11): embryos were warmed in 1 M, 0.5 M and 0 M sucrose, and (ii) W1/0.5 (one-step dilution; n = 9): embryos were warmed directly in 0.5 M sucrose. After 3 and 24 h of warming, the embryos were measured and evaluated for their morphology, developmental stage and viability (Propidium Iodide-Hoechst 33,342 dyes). Although both treatments decreased embryo quality after warming (P < 0.05), no significant differences (P > 0.05) were observed between protocols in terms of post-warming embryo quality, diameter and embryo survival. Greater percentages of dead cells (P < 0.001) were observed when embryos were warmed directly in 0.5 M sucrose (one-step dilution) when compared to the three-step protocol. The percentage of ruptured embryos was 27.3% and 0% in W3 and W1/0.5 protocols (P = 0.0893), respectively. In conclusion, warming Cryotop-vitrified donkey embryos directly in 0.5 M sucrose had no negative effects on embryo quality and post-warming embryo survival. Moreover, one-step protocol may help to prevent rupture when donkey embryos warmed directly in 0.5 M sucrose. These results observed in vitro must be verified by embryo transfer.

Abstract
Lectin is considered as a suitable biomarker for nano-depletion of acrosome-damaged sperm. The aim of this study was to synthetize magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) coated by peanut (Arachis hypogaea) agglutinin lectin (PNA) and investigate its beneficial effect in improving of sperm characteristics. MNPs were obtained by co-precipitation method, functionalized with chitosan and coated by PNA at a concentration of 0.04 mg/mL. Semen was frozen either with glycerol-based or sucrose-based extenders. Frozen-thawed straws from five donkeys (three ejaculates per donkey) were incubated with lectin-MNPs (2 mg/mL), and then exposed to an external magnet enabling the non-bound sperm to be collected as nanopurified sperm. Sperm were evaluated post-thawing (control) and after nanopurification for motility, plasma membrane integrity, acrosome integrity, morphology, DNA fragmentation and concentration. The statistical analyses were extended to investigate the correlation between the initial quality of the frozen-thawed semen samples and the effect of nanopurification after thawing. The obtained MNPs were biocompatible to the sperm and significantly improved the progressive motility (P < 0.05) for the glycerol nanopurified group (43.08 ± 3.52%) in comparison to control (33.70 ± 2.64%). Acrosome-damaged sperm were reduced (P < 0.05) in both nanopurified groups (19.92 ± 2.69 for G and 21.57 ± 2.77 for S) in comparison to control (36.07 ± 3.82 for G and 35.35 ± 3.88 for S). There were no significant changes in sperm morphology and membrane integrity after nanopurification. The average sperm recovery after nanopurification was 80.1%. Sperm quality index was significantly higher (P < 0.001) in nanopurified groups regardless of the initial quality of the frozen thawed semen samples. However, in the high sperm quality group, nanopurification significantly improved the progressive motility and membrane integrity besides the increasing of acrosome-intact sperm. Sperm nanopurification using lectin-magnetic nanoparticles can be considered as a suitable method to reduce the proportion of acrosome-damaged sperm and to increase the quality of frozen thawed donkey semen.

Abstract
In any precision manufacturing process, positioning systems play a very important role in achieving a quality product. As a new approach to current systems, camera-LCD positioning systems are a new technology that can provide substantial improvements enabling better accuracy and repeatability. However, in order to provide stability to the system a global positioning system is required. This paper presents an improvement of a positioning system based on the treatment of images on an LCD in which a new algorithm with absolute reference has been implemented. The method is based on basic geometry and linear algebra applied to computer vision. The algorithm determines the spiral center using an image taken at any point. Consequently, the system constantly knows its position and does not lose its reference. Several modifications of the algorithm are proposed and compared. The simulation and test of the algorithm provide an important improvement in the reliability and stability of the positioning system providing errors of microns for the calculation of the global position used by the algorithm.

Abstract
Wastewater may contain a diverse group of unregulated pollutants known as emerging pollutants, such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). Triclosan (TCS) is a personal care product widely used as an antiseptic or preservative in cosmetics, hand wash, toothpaste and deodorant soaps. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been used as effective and alternative treatments for complex wastewater. However, an important criterion for the assessment of AOPs and their operation conditions could be the potential formation of new toxic secondary products, such as polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs), especially when emerging pollutants are present in the media. If these are omitted from environmental management studies, the real environmental impacts of a WWTPs (wastewater treatment plants) may be underestimated. Consequently, the current study aims to evaluate the environmental impacts derived from electrooxidation (EOX), one of the most effective oxidation technologies, of emerging pollutants using Life Cycle Assessment. The analyses were performed for the treatment of effluents containing TCS, firstly without considering the formation of PCDD/Fs and, thereafter, considering the effects of these compounds. Total toxicity, calculated through different methods and corresponding impact factors, were evaluated for each stage of the process when different electrolytes are used, including PCDD/Fs formation. Finally, a sensitivity analysis was carried out to study i) the effect of the TCS initial concentration on the environmental impacts associated to ecotoxicity for the different life cycle methods and ii) the influence of changing the organic pollutant on PCDD/Fs formation employing 2-chlorophenol (2-CP). As a result, LCIA methods demonstrate that they are not fully adapted to the computation of PCDD/Fs in the water compartment, since only 2,3,7,8-tetraclorodibenzo-p-dioxina (2,3,7,8-TCDD) is present as a substance in the impact categories assessed, ignoring the remaining list of PCDD/Fs.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess seasonal variations during different periods of the breeding season (spring and summer) on stallion sperm DNA fragmentation and in vivo fertility associated with cooled-stored semen samples. Ejaculates were collected from eleven stallions and assessed for sperm motility (assessed by computer-assisted sperm analysis) and plasma membrane integrity (evaluated under fluorescence microscopy). Sperm DNA fragmentation (evaluated by the Sperm Chromatin Dispersion test) was assessed in cooled-stored semen at 5 °C for up to 24 h. Artificial insemination was performed throughout the breeding season. Mares were inseminated with cooled-stored semen (up to 24 h) every other day until ovulation. Pregnancy rates per cycle were determined detecting the embryonic vesicle by ultrasonography fifteen days after ovulation. Values (mean ± SD) for progressive sperm motility were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in spring (53.57 ± 9.97%) in comparison to summer (41.37 ± 10.81%). No significant differences in plasma membrane integrity were found between seasons (P > 0.05). Sperm DNA fragmentation was significantly lower (P < 0.01) in spring in comparison to summer after 0h (4.81 ± 1.87% vs. 8.77 ± 5.78%), 6h (9.00 ± 3.19% vs. 18.73 ± 8.22%) and 24h (14.6 ± 4.13% vs. 30.14 ± 9.85%) of cooled-storage. Pregnancy rates per cycle were also significantly higher (P < 0.01) in spring (50%) in comparison to summer (37%). There was a moderate negative relationship between positive pregnancies and sperm with fragmented DNA (r = - 0.619; P < 0.001). Semen samples associated with moderate fertility levels (Pregnancy rate < 50%) showed a higher percentage of sperm with fragmented DNA compared to samples obtaining higher fertility levels. In conclusion, seasonal variations were found during the breeding season, obtaining lower sperm DNA fragmentation and higher pregnancy rates in spring. Additionally, samples with the highest proportion of sperm with fragmented DNA showed the lowest fertility levels throughout the breeding season.

Abstract
Conventional IVF is not successful in the horse, and current work is focused on factors affecting sperm capacitation in this species. Challenges arise in assessing equine sperm incubated in media containing capacitation promotors, as some of these factors cause sperm head-to-head binding (aggregation). Our preliminary microscopic findings showed that sperm aggregates are largely of viable sperm, whereas nonviable sperm individualize. Thus, data obtained using technologies that analyse only individual cells and gate out aggregates, such as flow cytometry, may not accurately represent the study population. We developed a fixable live/dead/acrosome staining protocol (LD-PSA) that minimizes sperm aggregation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the percentage of viable and acrosome-reacted equine sperm after A23187 treatment, using either LD-PSA or a standard staining protocol (PI-PSA). Sperm from 9 ejaculates were suspended in Hanks’ balanced salt solution (HBSS) and exposed for 10min at 37°C to vehicle (V) or to 10 µM A23187 (C10). The sperm were washed, resuspended in HBSS medium with added lactate and pyruvate and containing 7mgmL−1 of bovine serum albumin (BSA), and assessed immediately (0h) or incubated at 37°C for 2h (the period needed for equine sperm to respond to A23187). Motility was analysed using computer-assisted semen analysis. Each treatment was stained by PI-PSA: propidium iodide and fluorescein isothiocyanate-Pisum sativum agglutinin (PSA) in DPBS; and by LD-PSA: Live/Dead Fixable Red, paraformaldehyde 2%, Triton×1%, and FITC-PSA in Dulbecco's phosphate-buffered saline with Accumax (Stem Cell Technologies), a commercial proprietary cell agglutination inhibitor, before flow cytometric analysis. Differences were analysed using repeated-measures two-way ANOVA. The% total motile sperm (TMOT) for V and C10 treatments were 76.3±3.0 and 71.2±4.7 at 0h (P>0.05), and 70.5±14.8 and 2.4±0.8 at 2h (P<0.05). On flow cytometry, the percentage of events outside the gate for V sperm (0h and 2h combined) was 31.9% in PI-PSA and 21.9% in LD-PSA samples (P<0.01). Measured viability in V samples was significantly lower when stained with PI-PSA than with LD-PSA at 0h (49.2±4.6 vs. 67.1±4.9) and tended to be lower (P=0.07) at 2h (44.0±4.9 vs. 55.1±2.8). Notably, the viability recorded in PI-PSA was 26 percentage points lower than was the TMOT at both 0h and 2h, indicating nonrepresentative results, as nonviable sperm should not be motile. By LD-PSA, this difference was 9 points at 0h and 15 points at 2h. Vehicle sperm showed significantly higher AR values in PI-PSA than in LD-PSA at 0h (30.4±4.0 vs. 17.7±2.4) and 2h (41.9±4.5 vs. 24.0±1.8), as did C10 sperm at 0h (28.9±2.7 vs. 18.0±2.5). The lower values for viability than total motility likely reflect agglutination of viable sperm and thus their exclusion from analysis on flow cytometry. The anti-clumping measures employed in the LD-PSA protocol were associated with increased correspondence of measured viability with TMOT. Thus, LD-PSA may offer a more accurate technique to assess viability and acrosome status of equine sperm incubated in capacitating conditions.

Abstract
Equine semen used for intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is typically frozen-thawed and may be of poor quality. To prepare sperm for ICSI, semen is typically centrifuged to remove freezing extender. However, centrifugation can cause damage to sperm, which is especially meaningful if sperm quality is already poor. We evaluated a method for selection of sperm without centrifugation, using a “swim-over” technique, and assessed the effect of pentoxifylline, a phosphodiesterase inhibitor that increases sperm motility in other species. To mimic poor-quality semen, we thawed frozen semen (1×) and re-froze it three additional times (4×). Aliquots (0.25 µL; 50,000 sperm) of 1× or 4× semen were placed at the bottom of the right leg of an “H,” made using 15µL of medium by tracing a template placed below a Petri dish. The medium used (Hanks’ balanced salt solution with 40mg mL BSA and added lactate and pyruvate) contained different concentrations of pentoxifylline (0, 0.5, 1, 2 or 4mgmL−1). One µL of medium was removed from the tip of the left arm of the H after 15 and 30min incubation, and the number of sperm were counted. In a second study, we evaluated the effect of pentoxifylline on sperm motility parameters using computer-assisted sperm motility analysis. After thawing, 1× and 4× semen was washed to remove freezing extender and resuspended in the same medium but with 7mgmL−1 bovine serum albumin (BSA), containing the different pentoxifylline concentrations. In Study 1, the number of collected sperm did not differ significantly for 1× sperm exposed to 0 to 4mgmL−1 pentoxifylline (means of 15 to 23 sperm at 15min, and 18 to 25 sperm at 30min). Similarly, in 4× frozen semen, there was no significant difference in number of collected sperm between 0mgmL−1 and 2 or 4mgmL−1 pentoxifylline concentrations (<1 to 6 at 15 min; 5 to 6 at 30min). In Study 2, at 0min,% total motility was significantly higher in 1 and 2mgmL−1 pentoxifylline than in 0mgmL−1 for 1× sperm (47.8±1.7 and 49.3±1.9, vs. 32.1±3.9, respectively; P=0.018) and significantly higher for 1, 2, and 4mgmL−1 pentoxifylline than for 0mgmL−1 for 4× sperm (3.9±0.9, 5.7±0.4, and 8.2±0.5, vs. 1.2±0.4; P=0.0001). Similar results were found at 15 and 30min for 1×, and at 15min for 4×. Pentoxifylline at 1 to 4mgmL−1 significantly increased the percentage of progressive motility in 1× sperm at 30min (17.8±1.3, 21.8±2.7, and 20.3±1.2, vs. 10.0±0.4; P=0.002) and, at 4mgmL−1, increased the percentage of progressive motility in 4× sperm at 0min (1.43±0.1 vs. 0.2±0.1; P=0.005) and 15min (1.4±0.2 vs. 0.1±0.0; P=0.0001). Exposure of poor-quality semen to pentoxifylline at 4mgmL−1 improved total and progressive motility but did not increase the recovery of motile sperm in a swim-over collection preparation.

Abstract
Many domestic donkey breeds are at risk of extinction, there is a critical urgency for genome resource banking. In the present study, we examined whether the use of Ficoll 70 added to the vitrification medium containing ethylene glycol (EG), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and sucrose improves the cryotolerance of donkey in vivo derived embryos. Day 7-8, grade 1-2 donkey embryos were measured and morphologically evaluated and then vitrified-warmed using the Cryotop technique. Before vitrification, embryos were randomly distributed into two groups: (i) VS1 (n = 14): vitrified using 15% EG + 15% DMSO + 0.5 M sucrose; and (ii) VS2 (n = 10): vitrified in the same medium supplemented also with 18% of Ficoll 70. After 24 h of warming, the embryos were measured and evaluated for their morphology, development and viability (Propidium Iodide-Hoechst 33342 dyes). Post-warming survival was numerically higher but not significantly different (P > 0.05) when embryos were vitrified in VS2 (70%) compared to VS1 (57.1%). Embryo rupture was only observed in the VS1 group (21.4%, 3/14). Higher embryo diameter was observed in all groups after 24 h culture (P < 0.05). No significant differences (P > 0.05) were observed among treatments in terms of percentages of cell death. These results demonstrate that the addition of Ficoll 70 to the vitrification medium is not a pre-requisite for successful vitrification of donkey embryos. However, its addition seems to enhance some of the post-warming embryo quality characteristics. Since no statistically significant evidence was found, further studies should be conducted in order to confirm our findings.

Abstract
Aim To analyse the efficacy and toxicity of postprostatectomy SRT in patients with a BCR evaluated with mpMRI. Background Multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) has the ability to detect the site of pelvic recurrence in patients with biochemical recurrence (BCR) after radical prostatectomy (RP). However, we do not know the oncological outcomes of mpMRI-guided savage radiotherapy (SRT). Results Local, lymph node, and pelvic bone recurrence was observed in 13, 4 and 2 patients, respectively. PSA levels were significantly lower in patients with negative mpMRI (0.4 ng/mL [0.4]) vs. positive mpMRI (2.2 ng/mL [4.1], p = 0.003). Median planning target volume doses in patients with visible vs. non-visible recurrences were 76 Gy vs. 70 Gy. Overall, mean follow-up was 41 months (6-81). Biochemical relapse-free survival (bRFS) at 3 years was 82.3% and 82.5%, respectively, for the negative and positive mpMRI groups (p = 0.800). Three-year rates of late grade ≥2 urinary and rectal toxicity were 14.8% and 1.9%, respectively; all but one patient recovered without sequelae. Conclusion SRT to the macroscopic recurrence identified by mpMRI is a feasible and well-tolerated option. In this study, there were no differences in bRFS between MRI-positive and MRI-negative patients, indicating effective targeting of MRI-positive lesions.

Abstract
Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) is a promising biomedical material. However, the haemocompatibility (haemolysis and thrombogenicity) and acute and sub-chronic immune responses to three-dimensional (3D) BNC biomaterials have not been evaluated. Accordingly, this manuscript focused on the effect of 3D microporosity on BNC haemocompatibility and a comparison with 2D BNC architecture, followed by the evaluation of the immune response to 3D BNC. Blood ex vivo studies indicated that compared with other 2D and 3D BNC architectures, never-dried 2D BNC presented antihemolytic and antithrombogenic effects. Nevertheless, in vivo studies indicated that 3D BNC did not interfere with wound haemostasis and elicited a mild acute inflammatory response, not a foreign body or chronic inflammatory response. Moreover, compared with the polyethylene controls, the implant design with micropores ca. 60 µm in diameter showed a high level of collagen, neovascularization and low fibrosis. Cell/tissue infiltration increased to 91% after 12 weeks and was characterized by fibroblastic, capillary and extracellular matrix infiltration. Accordingly, 3D BNC biomaterials can be considered a potential implantable biomaterial for soft tissue augmentation or replacement.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare the effect of three sugars and Equex paste in a freezing extender for donkey sperm cryopreservation. Ejaculates (n = 18) were collected from six Andalusian donkeys of proven fertility were pooled (two ejaculates per pool) and cryopreserved using a freezing extender containing three different sugars (glucose, fructose and sorbitol), with or without the addition of Equex paste. Sperm quality was assessed before and after freezing-thawing for motility, morphology, plasma membrane integrity, acrosome integrity and DNA integrity. The use of sorbitol in the freezing extender improved total and progressive sperm motility (P < 0.05) and amplitude of lateral head displacement (P < 0.01), but it reduced the values for other sperm motility variables compared with glucose (P < 0.001). The use of fructose resulted in a reduction in values for most CASA variables (P < 0.05), whereas addition of Equex paste did not have any beneficial effect on values for these variables (P > 0.05). Glucose was more effective in maintaining sperm morphology (P < 0.05), while there was no beneficial effect with the addition of Equex paste (P > 0.05). Supplementation of fructose and Equex paste in the freezing extender decreased plasma membrane integrity (P < 0.05) as compared with glucose, but there were no differences between treatments for acrosome and DNA integrity (P > 0.05), even after 24 h of incubation. The use of different sugar sources in the extender could affect the in vitro post-thaw quality of cryopreserved donkey spermatozoa, with sorbitol being an interesting alternative for improving the sperm quality. Results of the present study indicate the use of Equex paste could negatively affect post-thaw outcomes for sperm viability in this species.

Abstract
Sperm vitrification is a rapid freezing method in which carbohydrates are used as cryoprotectants. The aim of this study was to determine the optimal volume, concentration and type of carbohydrates for stallion sperm vitrification using 0.25 ml straws in comparison to conventional freezing. Ejaculates (n = 54) were collected from six stallions. For vitrification, straws were filled with different volumes (30, 70, 100 μl), sperm concentrations (50, 100, 200 × 106 sperm/ml) and extenders containing sucrose (20, 100, 200 mM), trehalose (50, 100, 200 mM) and raffinose (50, 100, 200 mM) and plunged into LN2. Conventional freezing was performed in 0.5 ml straws frozen in LN2 vapors. Sperm motility, plasma and acrosome membrane integrities and DNA fragmentation were compared among treatments. The use of straws filled with 100 μl at 100 × 106 sperm/ml with the extender containing 100 mM trehalose resulted in greater values for sperm quality than the other concentrations, volumes and carbohydrates. With vitrification, there were greater values (mean ± SEM; P < 0.05) than freezing for progressive motility (48.2 ± 2.3 compared with 37.3 ± 2.2%), plasma membrane integrity (82.8 ± 1.5 compared with 74.1 ± 1.9%), and intact acrosomes (50.2 ± 1.2 compared with 43.1 ± 1.4%); and less DNA fragmentation (6.4 ± 0.7 compared with 8.2 ± 0.3%). In conclusion, stallion sperm can be vitrified in 0.25 ml straws filled with 100 μl of sperm at 100 x 106 sperm/ml using an extender with 100 mM of trehalose, obtaining better sperm quality after warming than conventional freezing.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of fentanyl pectin nasal spray (FPNS) in controlling procedural breakthrough cancer pain (BTCP) in advanced cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study involved 62 advanced cancer patients, with well-controlled background pain, who presented BTCP associated to routine radiotherapy procedures, treated with FPNS according to our protocol of administration. The BPE intensity was measured using a visual analog scale (VAS). RESULTS The BTCP was triggered during the computed tomography simulation (79.3%) or treatment delivery (20.7%). Patients indicated a mean VAS of 8.8 (range 7-10) when attempting the procedure. After 4.5 min (range 2-10) of the first FPNS dose, the majority of patients (85.5%) indicated a VAS of 4.3 (range 2-6). 15.5% of the patients did not respond after 15 min; requiring a second dose. All these patients responded, reporting a mean VAS of 4.2 (range 4-6) after 3.0 min (range 2-5) of the second dose. None of the patients required a third dose, nor reported an AE after the administration of FPNS. CONCLUSIONS In our knowledge, our study is the one of highest recruitment, and with the fastest response of BTCP treated with FPNS reported in advanced cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy. FPNS has proven to be highly effective in reducing the intensity of procedural BTCP in a very short period of time.

Abstract
Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) is a natural polymer composed of glucose units with an important application as a two and three-dimensional scaffold for tissue engineering. However, as a polysaccharide, BNC does not have the biological signals of protein biomaterials. Therefore, this paper aims to develop a novel methodology to biomimic soft extracellular matrix (ECM) chemistry on to 3D BNC using the bioengineering of fibroblasts (the cells responsible for producing and regenerating the ECM) to immobilise adhesion proteins such as collagen and fibronectin. Modified 3D BNC (Mod-BNC) biomaterials were morphologically, thermally, and chemically characterised, and furthermore, the cell response was analysed by adhesion studies using atomic force microscopy (AFM), XTT assay, and confocal microscopy. Cell-derived proteins were deposited on the BNC nanoribbon network to modify its surface. The contact angle was increased from 40° to 60°, reducing the wettability of the biomaterial, and during thermogravimetry, the proteins in Mod-BNC exhibited an enhanced thermal stability because of the interactions between themselves and BNC. Chemical and immunocytochemistry analyses confirmed the presence of collagen type I and fibronectin on 3D BNC. These proteins activate integrin adhesion pathways that generate stronger cell adhesions. AFM experiments showed higher forces and energies on modified biomaterials, and moreover, the cells that adhered on to Mod-BNC exhibited higher mitochondrial activity and higher cell populations per cubic millimetre than non-modified surfaces (NMod-BNC). Accordingly, it was established that this novel methodology is robust and able to biomimic the chemical surface of soft ECM and immobilise cell-derived adhesion proteins from fibroblast; moreover, the Mod-BNC exhibited better cell response than NMod-BNC because of the biological signals in 3D BNC.

Abstract
PURPOSE Our aim was investigate whether lymph node uptake is associated with survival and regional relapses, and relapse patterns with respect to the radiotherapy fields in esophageal cancer (EC). MATERIALS AND METHODS The FDG-PET/CT image datasets of 56 patients were analyzed. All patients underwent definitive or neoadjuvant radio/chemotherapy (RCT). All patients suffering from persistent or recurrent local/regional-only disease after RCT were considered for salvage resection. Patients with adenocarcinoma without metastatic disease were considered for planned resection (usually within 3 months of treatment). RESULTS Patients with PET-positive lymph nodes before treatment had a worse overall survival and a shorter disease-free survival than those without PET-positive nodes. They also had worse node and metastatic relapse-free survival. N2 patients had statistically significant poorer outcomes than N1-N0 patients and a better survival if the involved nodes were closer to the esophageal tumor. Involved node location by PET/CT also affected global, nodal and metastatic relapses. In addition, an increment of SUVmax value increased relative risk of death and increased relative risk of node and metastatic relapses. The first site of relapse was metastatic recurrence and, second, local recurrence. The most frequent were "in-field" loco/regional recurrence. We observed a relationship between patients classified-N1 and out-field nodal recurrence (p = 0.024), and between patients-N2 and in-field nodal recurrence. The number of PET-positive nodes was an independent significant prognostic predictor for relapse (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Our study shows that only FDG-PET/CT can provide prognostic information in EC. Nodal PET/CT uptake influences outcome and relapse location among EC patients.

Abstract
In vitro fertilization does not occur readily in the horse. Fertilization can be achieved using sperm treated with the calcium ionophore A23187 (CaI), but rates are low and variable. In order to fertilize, it is thought that the sperm must show hyperactivated motility and undergo the acrosome reaction. The presence of protein in the media is thought to suppress the effect of CaI, but protein is needed for maintenance of sperm motility. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess the effect of CaI in the presence or absence of protein on the acrosome and on hyperactivated motility of equine sperm. For this purpose, sperm from 4 stallions were exposed for 10min at 37°C to vehicle or to 1 (C1), 5 (C5) or 10 (C10) μM CaI, with (BSA) or without (N) 7mg mL−1 BSA. The sperm were then washed and incubated at 37°C for 2h. Total and hyperactivated motility were measured by computer-assisted semen analysis. Sperm were considered hyperactivated if curvilinear velocity was >180μm s−1, amplitude of lateral head displacement was >12μm, linearity was <30% and fractal dimension value was >1.3. The percentage of live acrosome-reacted sperm was measured by flow cytometry after staining with propidium iodide and Pisum sativum agglutinin. Data were analysed by repeated-measures 2-way ANOVA. Results were expressed as mean±standard error. Total motility in C5 and C10 treatments was significantly decreased in relation to control (BSA-vehicle) starting at 30min of incubation (35.42±13.57 to 28.20±13.10% v. 71.72±9.21%, respectively; P<0.05). Hyperactivated motility was significantly lower in C10, C5 and N-C1 than in control after 2h of incubation (1.46±0.64v. 3.10±0.58%, respectively). Live acrosome-reacted sperm were significantly higher (P<0.05) for BSA-C5 (14.04±1.99%) and BSA-C10 (14.85±2.52%) than for control (7.50±1.62%) after 2h of incubation. The exposure to sperm of concentrations ≥5μM CaI was associated with loss of motility from 30min of incubation on. However, 2h of incubation after ≥5 μM CaI in the presence of BSA were needed to increase the percentage of live acrosome-reacted sperm. This mismatch between motility and acrosome response helps to clarify the reasons for the variable effect of sperm CaI treatment on equine IVF. Further studies measuring calcium influx and assessing the effect of sperm pre-incubation on CaI response are needed to explore mechanisms for equine in vitro sperm capacitation.

Abstract
Patient engagement in health care system can be regarded as a lever for the general improvement of people's health, the quality and safety of care. Among the many approaches that co-exist, the model of Patient Partner is relatively recent and declares itself as the most successful to promote this engagement. The authors of this article propose to present briefly the above model and to raise the remaining questions on its operational application. We will then present the research program «Patient Partner Approach to Care» (INTERREG Va) that questions the Patient Partner model in an interregional context (Wallonia - Grand Duchy of Luxembourg - Lorraine - Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland).

Abstract
Sperm vitrification as alternative to conventional freezing is increasing in popularity in many species. It has been achieved by direct exposure of diluted semen to liquid nitrogen in spheres or straws. Both techniques have been successfully developed, but they had not been compared yet in donkeys. The aim of this study was to compare these two methods of vitrification for donkey semen. Ejaculates from six Andalusian donkeys were collected and extended in Gent without glycerol supplemented with sucrose 0.1 M (Molar). Samples were slowly cooled at 5°C. For vitrification, 30 μl suspensions (spheres) were dropped directly into liquid nitrogen (LN2 ) or filled in covered 0.25 ml straws and then plunged into the LN2 (straws). For warming, straws and spheres were directly immersed in 3 ml of INRA-96 at 43°C. Total (TM, %) and progressive motility (PM, %) were objectively evaluated by computer-assisted sperm analysis and plasma membrane integrity (PMI, %) by epifluorescence microscopy. Results showed the straw method resulted in significantly higher values than spheres for: TM (54.7% ± 10.1 vs. 28.6% ± 6.5) and PM (44.2% ± 9.4 vs. 17.7% ± 6.4), but no significant differences were found between straws or spheres for PMI (31.5 ± 10.7 vs. 41.6 ± 14.3) respectively. In conclusion, donkey sperm could be vitrified in straws obtaining better sperm motility parameters after warming in comparison to the sphere method.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to estimate the cost-effectiveness ratio of aripiprazole once-monthly compared to once-monthly injectable paliperidone palmitate in the treatment of schizophrenia in France on the basis of results and data from the QUALIFY study. METHODS Consumed resources data measured with a dedicated questionnaire and results on the quality of life scales from the QUALIFY study were combined with French standard unit costs of each collected consumed resources during QUALIFY to estimate the cost-effectiveness ratios of the two products. Multivariate sensitivity analyses were performed to test the combined impact of the different assumptions. RESULTS Findings of the study showed greater efficacy on the quality of life (QLS) and psychiatric evaluation scales (CGI-S and CGI-I) observed in QUALIFY of aripiprazole compared with paliperidone palmitate. Findings also suggest a trend (P=0.0733) in the reduction of total costs linked to a statistical decrease (P<0,0001) in drug costs in the aripiprazole group. These findings are reinforced by the probabilistic sensitivity analyses. CONCLUSION Aripiprazole appeared to be more cost-effective than paliperidone palmitate in the French context. Limits of this study are mainly related with the duration of the clinical trial and to assumptions on the transposability of measured consumed resources in the international clinical trial to the French healthcare system.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare the effect of two semen extenders and four permeating cryoprotectants on post-thaw sperm quality of Andalusian donkeys. First, 32 ejaculates were pooled, split and frozen in either Gent B or INRA 96 with egg yolk and glycerol. Second, 12 pooled semen samples were simultaneously frozen in Gent B (glycerol) or Gent A containing ethylene glycol (EG; 1 or 1.5%) or dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO; 1.5 or 2%). Finally, nine pooled samples were simultaneously cryopreserved in Gent A containing 1% EG (as control), dimethylformamide (DMFA; 1 or 2.5%) or a combination of 1% EG and 1.5% DMFA. Gent B yielded a higher (P<0.01) post-thaw sperm motility than modified INRA96. EG 1% increased the sperm membrane integrity (P<0.001), whereas DMSO affected sperm motility and membrane integrity (P<0.001). DMFA 2.5% yielded higher (P<0.001) values for sperm motility and membrane integrity. We concluded that Gent B improves in vitro post-thaw sperm quality of donkey spermatozoa, but the replacement of glycerol with 1% EG or 2.5% DMFA increased sperm protection against cryodamage. The use of DMSO for freezing donkey semen was unsuccessful and a toxic effect is suspected. These extenders should be included in the pre-freeze test for each donkey.

Abstract
Information received by cancer patients has gained importance in recent decades. The aim of this study was to evaluate the perception of information received by oncological patients in a radiotherapy department and to measure the importance of the other information sources. A cross-sectional study was conducted, evaluating patients who received radiotherapy. All the patients were asked two questionnaires: the EORTC QLQ-INFO26 module evaluating their satisfaction with received information, and a questionnaire analyzing other sources of information search. One hundred patients between 27 and 84 years were enrolled. Breast cancer (26 %) was the commonest cancer. Patients felt better informed about the medical tests and secondly about the performed treatment. The younger patients were those who were more satisfied with the information received and patients with no formal education felt less satisfied, with statistically significant differences. Patients did not seek external information; at the most, they asked relatives and other people with cancer. Patients were satisfied with the received information, although a high percentage would like more information. In general, patients did not search for external information sources. Age and educational level seem to influence in the satisfaction with the received information.

Abstract
The aims of this study were to: 1) develop a new method for stallion sperm selection using a modified swim-up procedure through a colloid and 2) evaluate its impact in good quality ejaculates from bad freezers in comparison to methods involving centrifugation such as single layer centrifugation and sperm washing. Ejaculates were processed before freezing using three different procedures: sperm washing (SW), colloid single layer centrifugation (SLC) and a modified colloid swim-up (SU). After semen processing, sperm recovery rates were measured and sperm were frozen. Post-thaw sperm motility (assessed by computer-assisted sperm analysis), normal forms and plasma membrane integrity (evaluated under bright-field and fluorescence microscopy respectively), and DNA fragmentation (assessed by the Sperm-Halomax kit) were compared between treatments. Sperm recovery rates were similar between SU and SLC but lower than SW. Sperm motility after thawing was lower in SU in comparison to SLC and SW, maybe due to the incomplete removal of seminal plasma before freezing. Sperm DNA fragmentation was lower in SU and SLC selection methods, particularly in SLC selected samples during the first 6h of incubation. The remaining sperm parameters assessed were similar among treatments. In conclusion, SLC is more suitable than SW and SU to process stallion semen prior to freezing, in particular when sperm DNA damage is suspected. Further studies are needed in order to determine the potential benefits of SU in samples where centrifugation is not necessary, such as epididymal sperm, ejaculate fractioning or post-thaw semen samples.

Abstract
A novel magnetically recoverable, visible light active TiO2-WO3 composite (Fe3O4@SiO2@TiO2-WO3) was prepared to enable the photocatalyst recovery after the degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) under simulated solar light. For comparison, the photocatalytic activity of other materials such as non-magnetic TiO2-WO3, Fe3O4@SiO2@TiO2, TiO2, and the commercial TiO2 P25 was also evaluated under the studied experimental conditions. The structure and morphology of the synthesized materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), and electron dispersion spectroscopy (EDS). Moreover, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area and magnetic properties of the samples were determined. The Fe3O4@SiO2@TiO2-WO3 and TiO2-WO3 led to a BPA degradation of 17.50 and 27.92 %, respectively, after 2 h of the simulated solar light irradiation. Even though their activity was lower than that of P25, which degraded completely BPA after 1 h, our catalysts were magnetically separable for their further reuse in the treatment. Furthermore, the influence of the water matrix in the photocatalytic activity of the samples was studied in municipal wastewater. Finally, the identification of reaction intermediates was performed and a possible BPA degradation pathway was proposed to provide a better understanding of the degradation process.
