Abstract
This study used glucose, fructose, maltose and dextran to explore the effects of different carbohydrates on the Maillard reaction of casein phosphopeptides (CPP). The color parameter results showed that heating time from 1 to 5 h led to brown color, which was consistent with the observed increased in browning intensity. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy results verified that four carbohydrates reacted with CPP to produce Maillard conjugates. Fluorescence spectroscopy showed that the Maillard reaction changed the tertiary structure of CPP by decreasing the intrinsic fluorescence intensity and surface hydrophobicity compared with the CPP-carbohydrate mixture. At the same time, the Maillard reaction effectively improved the emulsifying properties, reducing power and DPPH radical scavenging activity of CPP. Furthermore, this study also found that glucose and fructose improved CPP more than maltose and dextran. Therefore, monosaccharides have good potential in modifying CPP via the Maillard reaction. Abstract
Inulin, a polysaccharide characterized by a β-2,1 fructosyl-fructose structure terminating in a glucosyl moiety, is naturally present in plant roots and tubers. Current methods provide average degrees of polymerization (DP) but lack information on the distribution and absolute concentration of each DP. To address this limitation, a reproducible (CV < 10 %) high throughput (<2 min/sample) MALDI-MRMS approach capable of characterizing and quantifying inulin molecules in plants using matched-matrix consisting of α-cyano-4-hydroxycinnamic acid butylamine salt (CHCA-BA), chicory inulin-12C and inulin-13C was developed. The method identified variation in chain lengths and concentration of inulin across various plant species. Globe artichoke hearts, yacón and elephant garlic yielded similar concentrations at 15.6 g/100 g dry weight (DW), 16.8 g/100 g DW and 17.7 g/100 g DW, respectively, for DP range between 9 and 22. In contrast, Jerusalem artichoke demonstrated the highest concentration (53.4 g/100 g DW) within the same DP ranges. Jerusalem artichoke (DPs 9-32) and globe artichoke (DPs 9-36) showed similar DP distributions, while yacón and elephant garlic displayed the narrowest and broadest DP ranges (DPs 9-19 and DPs 9-45, respectively). Additionally, qualitative measurement for all inulin across all plant samples was feasible using the peak intensities normalized to Inulin-13C, and showed that the ratio of yacón, elephant garlic and Jerusalem was approximately one, two and three times that of globe artichoke. This MALDI-MRMS approach provides comprehensive insights into the structure of inulin molecules, opening avenues for in-depth investigations into how DP and concentration of inulin influence gut health and the modulation of noncommunicable diseases, as well as shedding light on refining cultivation practices to elevate the beneficial health properties associated with specific DPs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The school-age is a crucial period of physical and cognitive growth, which requires an assessment of dietary intake and its influence on body weight and height. This study aims to determine the association between the quality and quantity of carbohydrate intake with selected anthropometric indices in primary school girls in Kerman City, Iran. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted on 330 primary school girls ages 6-12 years in Kerman. We used a validated and reliable dish-based 185-item food frequency questionnaire to evaluate people's food intake. We assessed the amount of carbohydrates in children's diets as the percentage of daily calories and grams per day. We used dietary fiber intake (grams/day), the glycemic load, the ratio of whole grain to total grain, and the ratio of solid carbohydrates to total carbohydrates to assess carbohydrate quality. Height, weight, and arm circumference were measured. We calculated body mass index (BMI) by dividing the weight in kilograms by the height in centimeters squared. We used the World Health Organization z-scores charts for girls 5 to 19 years old to assess z-scores for BMI-for-age (BAZ), height-for-age (HAZ), and weight-for-age (WAZ). Socioeconomic status and physical activity were assessed. We used ANOVA and ANCOVA statistical tests to assess the association between anthropometric indices and carbohydrate quantity and quality parameters. RESULTS Participants with the highest amount of carbohydrate intake had significantly higher anthropometric indices, including arm circumference, BMI-for-age z score (BAZ), and Height-for-age z score (HAZ) (p < 0.001, p < 0.001, and p = 0.009, respectively). With the increase in glycemic load (GL) and dietary fiber intake, anthropometric indices including arm circumference (GL: p < 0.001, Fiber: p < 0.001), BAZ (GL: p < 0.001, Fiber: P < 0.001), and HAZ (GL: P = 0.009, Fiber: p < 0.001) increased significantly. CONCLUSIONS We concluded that there was a positive association between the amount of carbohydrate intake and anthropometric indices (MUAC, BAZ, and HAZ). Also, with the increase in glycemic load and dietary fiber intake, the anthropometric indices including MUAC, BAZ, and HAZ increased.

Abstract
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) uses photosensitizing agents along with light to ablate tissue, including cancers. Such light-driven localized delivery of free-radical oxygen to kill target tissue depends on photosensitizer cell penetration efficacy. While the attachment of monosaccharides and disaccharides to photosensitizers has been shown to potentially provide improved photosensitizer delivery, the range of glycan entities tested thus far is limited. We sought to expand such knowledge by coupling N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) to pyropheophorbides as thioglycosides, and then testing photosensitizer efficacy. To this end, GlcNAc was conjugated to both pyropheophorbide-a and methyl pyropheophorbide-a. Among the entities tested, the conjugation of N-acetylglucosamine to methyl pyropheophorbide-a ('PSe') as thioglycoside enhanced cell uptake both in the presence and absence of human serum proteins, relative to other compounds tested. The enhanced PSe penetrance into cells resulted in higher cell death upon illumination with 665 nm light. While acting as a potent photosensitizer, PSe did not affect cellular carbohydrate profiles. Overall, the study presents a new pyropheophorbide glycoconjugate with strong in vitro PDT efficacy.

Abstract
Sialic-acid-binding immunoglobulin-type lectins (Siglecs) are a family of cell-surface immunomodulatory receptors that recognize sialic-acid-containing glycans. The majority of Siglecs have an inhibitory motif in their intercellular domain and can regulate the cellular activation of immune cells. Importantly, the immunomodulatory role of Siglecs is regulated by engagement with distinct sialoglycan ligands. However, there are still many unanswered questions about the precise ligand(s) recognized by individual Siglec family members. New tools and approaches to study Siglec-ligand interactions are rapidly filling this knowledge gap. This review provides an overview of recent advances in discovering Siglec ligands as well as the development of approaches to modulate the function of Siglecs. In both aspects, chemical biology approaches are emphasized with a discussion on how these are complementing biochemical and genetic strategies.

Abstract
Proteins and carbohydrates are important organics in waste activated sludge, and greatly affect methane production and microbial community composition in anaerobic digestion systems. Here, a series of co-substrates with different molecular weight were applied to investigate the interactions between microbial dynamics and the molecular weight of co-substrates. Biochemical methane production assays conducted in batch co-digesters showed that feeding high molecular weight protein and carbohydrate substrates resulted in higher methane yield and production rates. Moreover, high-molecular weight co-substrates increased the microbial diversity, enriched specific microbes including Longilinea, Anaerolineaceae, Syner-01, Methanothrix, promoted acidogenic and acetoclastic methanogenic pathways. Low-molecular weight co-substrates favored the growth of JGI-0000079-D21, Armatimonadota, Methanosarcina, Methanolinea, and improved hydrogenotrophic methanogenic pathway. Besides, Methanoregulaceae and Methanolinea were indicators of methane yield. This study firstly revealed the complex interactions between co-substrate molecular weight and microbial communities, and demonstrated the feasibility of adjusting co-substrate molecular weight to improve methane production process.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS The relationship between diet and health, particularly the role of carbohydrates, has been extensively studied. However, carbohydrate intake based on individual health conditions remains unclear. Here, we aimed to investigate whether the association between carbohydrate intake and all-cause mortality varied between individuals with and without diabetes mellitus (DM). METHODS This prospective cohort study used data from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study (KoGES). Overall, 143,050 participants were included, with 10.1% having DM. Dietary intake was assessed using a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to assess the association between carbohydrate intake and mortality after adjusting for confounders. RESULTS The study showed that 5436 deaths occurred during the median follow-up period of 10.1 years. A significant interaction between carbohydrate intake and DM was observed in the study population (interaction p = 0.061). Higher carbohydrate intake proportion was associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality among individuals with DM (adjusted hazard ratio [HR], p-value = 1.10 [1.01-1.20], p = 0.032). Conversely, no association was observed between the proportion of carbohydrate intake and all-cause mortality in participants without DM. Additionally, both total sugar and added sugar intakes were associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality in participants with DM (adjusted HR, p-value = 1.02 [1.01-1.04], p < 0.001 and 1.18 [1.13-1.24], p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS High carbohydrate (%) and added sugar intake were associated with an increased mortality risk in individuals with DM. Reducing carbohydrate intake and opting for healthy carbohydrates to mitigate mortality risk may be beneficial for individuals with DM, particularly when compared with the general population.

Abstract
Human diseases often correlate with changes in protein glycosylation, which can be observed in serum or plasma samples. N-glycosylation, the most common form, can provide potential biomarkers for disease prognosis and diagnosis. However, glycoproteins constitute a relatively small proportion of the total proteins in human serum and plasma compared to the non-glycosylated protein albumin, which constitutes the majority. The detection of microheterogeneity and low glycan abundance presents a challenge. Mass spectrometry facilitates glycoproteomics research, yet it faces challenges due to interference from abundant plasma proteins. Therefore, methods have emerged to enrich N-glycans and N-linked glycopeptides using glycan affinity, chemical properties, stationary phase chemical coupling, bioorthogonal techniques, and other alternatives. This review focuses on N-glycans and N-glycopeptides enrichment in human serum or plasma, emphasizing methods and applications. Although not exhaustive, it aims to elucidate principles and showcase the utility and limitations of glycoproteome characterization.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To investigate the capacity of 99mTc-labeled 1-thio-β-D-glucose (1-TG) and 5-thio-D-glucose (5-TG) to act as a marker for glucose consumption in tumor cells in vivo as well as to evaluate the biodistribution of 1-TG and 5-TG. We investigated the biodistribution, including tumor uptake, of 1-TG and 5-TG at various time points after injection (0.5, 2 and 4 h) in human colorectal carcinoma (HCT-116) and human lung adenocarcinoma (A549) xenograft bearing nude mice (N = 4 per tracer and time point). RESULTS Ex vivo biodistribution studies revealed a moderate uptake with a maximum tumor-to-muscle ratio of 4.22 ± 2.7 and 2.2 ± 1.3 (HCT-116) and of 3.2 ± 1.1 and 4.1 ± 1.3 (A549) for 1-TG and 5-TG, respectively, with a peak at 4 h for 1-TG and 5-TG. Biodistribution revealed a significantly higher uptake compared to blood in kidneys (12.18 ± 8.77 and 12.69 ± 8.93%ID/g at 30 min) and liver (2.6 ± 2.8%ID/g) for 1-TG and in the lung (7.24 ± 4.1%ID/g), liver (6.38 ± 2.94%ID/g), and kidneys (4.71 ± 1.97 and 4.81 ± 1.91%ID/g) for 5-TG. CONCLUSIONS 1-TG and 5-TG showed an insufficient tumor uptake with a moderate tumor-to-muscle ratio, not reaching the levels of commonly used tracer, for diagnostic use in human colorectal carcinoma and human lung adenocarcinoma xenograft model.

Abstract
KEY MESSAGE The present study reports differentially expressed transcripts in the waterlogging-induced adventitious root (AR) of Mentha arvensis; the identified transcripts will help to understand AR development and improve waterlogging stress response. Waterlogging notably hampers plant growth in areas facing waterlogged soil conditions. In our previous findings, Mentha arvensis was shown to adapt better in waterlogging conditions by initiating the early onset of adventitious root development. In the present study, we compared the transcriptome analysis of adventitious root induced after the waterlogging treatment with the control taproot. The biochemical parameters of total carbohydrate, total protein content, nitric oxide (NO) scavenging activity and antioxidant enzymes, such as catalase activity (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, were enhanced in the adventitious root compared with control taproot. Analysis of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in adventitious root compared with the control taproot were grouped into four functional categories, i.e., carbohydrate metabolism, antioxidant activity, hormonal regulation, and transcription factors that could be majorly involved in the development of adventitious roots. Differential expression of the upregulated and uniquely expressing thirty-five transcripts in adventitious roots was validated using qRT-PCR. This study has generated the resource of differentially and uniquely expressing transcripts in the waterlogging-induced adventitious roots. Further functional characterization of these transcripts will be helpful to understand the development of adventitious roots, leading to the resistance towards waterlogging stress in Mentha arvensis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fatty acid-binding protein 4 (FABP4) has been associated with cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Acute aerobic exercise increases circulating FABP4 concentrations, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of inhibition of lipolysis by carbohydrate ingestion on circulating FABP4 concentrations during and after acute aerobic exercise in healthy men. METHODS Men aged between 20 and 40, with no exercise habits and no metabolic diseases, were recruited. In a randomized crossover design, the participants underwent a carbohydrate-ingestion exercise (CE) and a fasted exercise (FE) trial. The CE trial consisted of 40-min acute aerobic exercise with ingestion of carbohydrates and 60-min bed rest. The FE trial followed the same protocol as the CE trial but without carbohydrate ingestion. Venous blood samples were collected to measure hormones (adrenaline, noradrenaline, and insulin) metabolites (glycerol, free fatty acids, and glucose), and FABP4 concentrations. Ventilation and gas exchange were also collected to measure substrate oxidation. RESULTS Thirteen healthy men participated in and completed both the CE and FE trials. The insulin concentration was more than 4 times higher in the CE trial than in the FE trial (p < 0.004, effect size [ES] > 2.00). Free fatty acid concentrations were more than 4 times lower in the CE trial than in the FE trial (p < 0.02, ES > 2.04). However, there was no significant difference in the changes in circulating FABP4 concentrations between the CE and FE trials (p = 0.108), which did not change during aerobic exercise and significantly increased post-aerobic exercise in both trials (p < 0.002, ES > 1.212). Changes in FABP4 concentrations following aerobic exercise were not significantly correlated with changes in glycerol or free fatty acid concentrations during aerobic exercise. CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that suppression of lipolysis and elevation of insulin are not strongly involved in increases in FABP4 secretion following acute aerobic exercise.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Flower buds of Anthurium andraeanum frequently cease to grow and abort during the early flowering stage, resulting in prolonged planting times and increased commercialization costs. Nevertheless, limited knowledge exists of the mechanism of flower development after initiation in A. andraeanum. RESULTS In this study, the measurement of carbohydrate flow and intensity between leaves and flowers during different growth stages showed that tender leaves are strong sinks and their concomitant flowers are weak ones. This suggested that the tender leaves compete with their concomitant flower buds for carbohydrates during the early growth stages, potentially causing the abortion of the flower buds. The analysis of transcriptomic differentially expressed genes suggested that genes related to sucrose metabolism and auxin response play an important role during flower bud development. Particularly, co-expression network analysis found that AaSPL12 is a hub gene engaged in flower development by collaborating carbohydrate and auxin signals. Yeast Two Hybrid assays revealed that AaSPL12 can interact with AaARP, a protein that serves as an indicator of dormancy. Additionally, the application of exogenous IAA and sucrose can suppress the expression of AaARP, augment the transcriptional abundance of AaSPL12, and consequently expedite flower development in Anthurium andraeanum. CONCLUSIONS Collectively, our findings indicated that the combination of auxin and sugar signals could potentially suppress the repression of AaARP protein to AaSPL12, thus advancing the development of flower buds in Anthurium andraeanum.

Abstract
In order to obtain topical and non-irritating anti-glaucoma drugs, novel semicarbazide-containing sulfonamide derivatives were designed and synthetized by sugar tail method in this study. The hydrophilic monosaccharides were expected to form interaction with the hydrophilic site of hCA II meanwhile the linker semicarbazides are used to further enhance water solubility, and more importantly, regulate the pH values of the target compounds in aqueous solution. First, all target compounds were synthesized and evaluated for their CA inhibitory activities. The results showed our target compounds demonstrated comparable activity to the positive control drug acetazolamide. The best derivative 11d exhibits an IC50 value of 14 nM for hCA II and 2086-fold selectivity over CA I. Subsequently, physicochemical properties study showed that the target compounds displayed very good water solubility (up to 3 %) and neutral pH value in solutions. Meanwhile, the artificial membrane permeability assay was performed to verify that the target compound could also pass through the membrane structure despite their strong water solubility. In the glaucomatous rabbit eye model, the applied topically representative compounds showed strongly lowered intraocular pressure (IOP), as 1 % or 2 % water solutions. Subsequent drug-like evaluation showed our target compounds possessed low hemolysis effect and low cytotoxicity toward human corneal epithelial cell line. Also, it was not found that these target compounds had significant inhibition of hERG and CYP. In addition, these novel analogs also displayed good liver microsomal metabolic stability and plasma stability. Finally, docking studies provided the rational binding modes of representative compounds in complex with hCA II. Taken together, these results suggested that compound 11d may be a promising hCA II inhibitor deserving further development.

Abstract
Ripening and growing location are important factors that can impact fruit quality characteristics. In this study, the influence of these factors on physicochemical characteristics, carbohydrates, aliphatic organic acids, phenolic compounds, and antioxidant capacity of red guava (Psidium cattleianum Sabine) was evaluated. Fruit ripening increased fructose and glucose (up to 22.83 and 16.42 g 100 g- 1 dry matter (DM), respectively), and decreased citric acid, the major organic acid (up to 135.35 mg g- 1 DM). Ripening and growing location also influenced the concentration of phenolic compounds and antioxidant capacity of red guava, in which a dependency between both factors was observed in most cases. Apigenin, galangin, isoquercitrin, among other phenolic compounds were quantified for the first time in red guava, in which isoquercitrin was the major (up to 13409.81 mg kg- 1 DM). The antioxidant potential of red guava was also confirmed by ferric reducing antioxidant power assay (up to 82.63 µmol Fe+ 2 g- 1 DM), Folin-Ciocalteu reducing capacity assay (up to 17.79 mg gallic acid equivalent g- 1 DM), and DPPH free radical scavenging assay (up to 25.36 mg ascorbic acid equivalent g- 1 DM). These results especially demonstrated the bioactive potential of red guava and provided knowledge regarding the influence of ripening and growing location on chemical and bioactive components encouraging its industrial exploitation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS The evidence is inconsistent regarding associations between relative proportions of macronutrient intake and disease risk, potentially due to limitations in accounting for differential effects of simple sugars and dietary fiber, grouped as "carbohydrates." We examined the association between the ratio of dietary fiber to carbohydrate intake (FC-R) measure, the relative proportion of macronutrients, and mortality risk in a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults. METHODS AND RESULTS We performed a retrospective cohort study, using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2007-2018 and linked mortality data among 15,789 adults aged ≥40 years. We categorized participants into three groups by tertile cutpoints of FC-R, and by percent calories from carbohydrate (<45 %, 45-65 %, and >65 %). Cox proportional hazards regression was performed to estimate hazard ratios (HR) for all-cause mortality with 95 % confidence intervals (95 % CI), adjusting for demographic, health history, and lifestyle factors. During a median follow-up of 6.5 years, 2044 deaths were observed. Compared to the low FC-R group, higher FC-R groups showed a reduction in mortality risk after adjusting for potential confounders (high vs low: HR = 0.71, 95 % CI = 0.62-0.83). The association persisted in those consuming 45-65 % and >65 % of calories from carbohydrate, while the association was attenuated in those with <45 % of calories from carbohydrate. Percent calories from carbohydrate showed no association with mortality risk. CONCLUSION Higher FC-R was associated with lower all-cause mortality risk in adults with moderate to high levels of percent calories from carbohydrate. Mechanisms of the association warrant further investigation.

Abstract
Background Many studies have examined the relationship between nutrition and dental caries. However further studies are needed regarding nutritional factors that can have a strong impact on the incidence of early childhood caries (ECC). Nutrition is one factor that determines caries occurrence. Exposure to carbohydrates in the oral cavity causes carbohydrate fermentation, which produces acids. This acidic substance erodes the enamel surface of teeth, leading to ECC. This systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies assessed the aspects of nutrition and diet that contribute to the incidence of ECC in children. Materials and methods We conducted a systematic review by extracting data according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. A search was conducted of published articles in Scopus, MEDLINE via PubMed, and Science Direct using the keywords "nutrition," "sugar," "carbohydrate," "dietary habit," "dental caries," and "oral health." The protocol was registered at PROSPERO 2023 (Registration ID: CRD42023394583). Results The article screening yielded 6 articles that met the inclusion criteria. From the total of 443 studies found. Those that could not determine a correlation between the ECC variables and nutrition and with data analyses that only used a bivariate analysis were excluded. The results of the meta-analysis showed that nutritional factors had the strongest impact on caries including feeding practice (OR 3.64; 95% CI 2.03, 6.55), sugar intake (OR 3.24; 95% CI 2.59, 4.03), and low fruit and vegetable intake (OR 2.71; 95% CI 1.47, 5.01). Conclusion Two nutritional factors had the strongest relationship with the risk of ECC: feeding practice and sugar intake. The lowest risk factor for causing ECC was low fruit and vegetable intake.

Abstract
The quality of a mother's diet is important to ensure child growth and development and keep women healthy. This systematic review aimed to identify the outcomes of a carbohydrate-restricted diet during lactation. PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science, and LILACS were searched for studies published between 2012 and 2023; 16 studies were selected, all of them case reports or care series. The carbohydrate restriction described in the papers mainly was ketogenic, low-carb, low-carbohydrate and high-fat, and modified ketogenic diets. The main goal of women undertaking these diets was weight loss, with therapeutic purposes (monitored and supervised by health professionals) in only 2 cases: (1) ketogenic diet therapy for treatment of seizures in the infant and (2) to reduce symptoms of mother's gastroesophageal reflux. Most articles reported that lactating women were hospitalized, experiencing symptoms such as vomiting, muscle weakness, nausea, abdominal pain, general malaise, and fatigue. However, articles did not mention poor outcomes for the infants. Most of the studies in this review were published in the past 3 years, indicating a possible increase in cases of women practicing carbohydrate restriction during lactation for weight loss caused by body dissatisfaction. In conclusion, carbohydrate restriction during lactation may be harmful to the lactating woman and contribute to the state of lactational ketoacidosis, but infant outcomes are mainly a change in feeding patterns. Thus, education on food and nutrition is necessary for this population.

Abstract
The demand for protein is increasing with an expanding world population and is influencing the rapid growth of fish and animal agriculture. These sectors are becoming a significant source of water pollution and need to develop environmentally sustainable techniques that are cost-effective, ideally with potential for downstream value-added production. This study investigated the potential of one of the fastest-growing cyanobacterial species, Synechococcus elongatus UTEX 2973, for bioremediation of mixed wastewater (combination of sturgeon and swine wastewater). Three different mixing ratios (25:75, 50:50, and 75:25 sturgeon:swine) were compared to find a suitable combination for the growth of S. elongatus as well as carbohydrate accumulation in biomass. The final biomass production was found to be 0.65 ± 0.03 g Dry cell Weight (DW)/L for 75%-25 %, 0.90 ± 0.004 g DW/L for 50%-50 %, and 0.71 ± 0.04 g DW/L for 25%-75 % sturgeon-swine wastewater combination. Cyanobacteria cultivated in 50%-50 % sturgeon-swine wastewater also accumulated 70 % total carbohydrate of DW, whereas 75%-25 % sturgeon-swine and 25%-75 % sturgeon-swine accumulated 53 % and 45 %, respectively. Subsequently, the S. elongatus cells were grown in a separate batch of 50%-50 % sturgeon-swine wastewater and compared with cells grown in BG11 synthetic growth media. Cultivation in BG11 resulted in higher biomass production but lower carbohydrate accumulation than 50%-50 % mixed wastewater. Final biomass production was 0.85 ± 0.08 g DW/L for BG11 and 0.65 ± 0.04 g DW/L for 50%-50 % sturgeon-swine wastewater. Total carbohydrate accumulated was 75 % and 64 % of DW for 50%-50 % sturgeon-swine mixed wastewater and BG11 growth media, respectively, where glycogen was the main carbohydrate component (90 %). The nutrient removal efficiencies of S. elongatus were 67.15 % for orthophosphate, 93.39 % for nitrate-nitrite, and 97.98 % for ammonia. This study suggested that S. elongatus is a promising candidate for enabling simultaneous bioremediation of mixed wastewater and the production of value-added biochemicals.

Abstract
Academy soccer players frequently train in the evening (i.e. 1700-2000 h), hence limited time to nutritionally prepare and recover due to schooling, travel and sleep schedules. Accordingly, we assessed timing and quantity of energy intake in the pre-training and post-training period. Over a 3-day in-season training period, male players (n=48; n=8 from under (U) 12, 13, 14, 15/16, 18 and 23 players) from an English Premier League academy self-reported dietary intake and physical activity levels (via the remote food photography method and activity diary, respectively) in the four hours pre- and post-training. Timing of pre-training energy intake ranged from 40 ± 28 mins (U15/U16 players) to 114 ± 71 mins (U18) before training and mean carbohydrate (CHO) intake ranged from 0.8±0.4 g.kg-1 (U23) to 1.5±0.9 g.kg-1 (U12). Timing of post-training energy intake ranged from 39 ± 27 mins (U14) to 70 ± 84 mins (U23) and mean CHO intake ranged from 1.6±0.8 g.kg-1 (U12) to 0.9±0.5 g.kg-1 (U14). In contrast to CHO, all age groups consumed sufficient protein intake in the post-training period (i.e. > 0.3 g.kg-1). We conclude academy soccer players habitually practice sub-optimal fuelling and recovery strategies, the consequence of which could impair growth, maturation and physical performance.

Abstract
Lectin Con A, with specificity to interact with α-d-mannopyranoside, achieves tight binding affinity with the aid of optimal multivalent ligand valencies, distances and orientations between the ligands. A series of synthetic arabinomannans, possessing arabinan core and mannan at the non-reducing ends, is studied to assess the above constraints involved with lectin binding in this report. Trisaccharides, with (1 → 2)(1 → 3), (1 → 2)(1 → 5) and (1 → 3)(1 → 5) glycosidic bond connectivities, and a pentasaccharide with mannopyranosides at the non-reducing ends are synthesized. The binding affinities of the mannose bivalent ligands are studied with tetrameric Con A lectin by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC). Among the derivatives, trisaccharide with (1 → 2)(1 → 3) glycosidic bond connectivity and the pentasaccharide undergo lectin interaction, clearly fulfilling the bivalent structural and functional valencies. Remaining oligosaccharides exhibit only a functional monovalency, defying the bivalent structural valency. The trisaccharide fulfilling the structural and functional valencies represent the smallest bivalent ligand, undergoing the lectin interaction in a trans-mode.

Abstract
Air conditioners alleviate the discomfort of human beings from heat waves that are consequences of climate change caused by anthropogenic activities. With each passing year, the effects of global warming worsen, increasing the growth of air conditioning industry. Air conditioning units produce substantial amounts of non-nutritive and (generally) neglected condensate water and greenhouse gases. Considering this, the study explored the potential of using air conditioner condensate water (ACW) to cultivate Chlorella sorokiniana, producing biomass, and sequestering carbon dioxide (CO2). The maximum biomass production was obtained in the BG11 medium (1.45 g L-1), followed by ACW-50 (1.3 g L-1). Similarly, the highest chlorophyll-a content was observed in the BG11 medium (11 μg mL-1), followed by ACW-50 (9.11 μg mL-1). The ACW-50 cultures proved to be better adapted to physiological stress (Fv/Fm > 0.5) and can be suitable for achieving maximum biomass with adequate lipid, protein, and carbohydrate production. Moreover, C. sorokiniana demonstrated higher lipid and carbohydrate yields in the ACW-50 medium, while biomass production and protein yields were comparable to the BG11 medium. The lipid, protein, and carbohydrate productivity were 23.43, 32.9, and 23.19 mg L-1 d-1, respectively for ACW-50. Estimation of carbon capture potential through this approach equals to 9.5% of the total emissions which is an added advantage The results indicated that ACW could be effectively utilized for microalgae cultivation, reducing the reliance on freshwater for large-scale microalgal biomass production and reduce the carbon footprints of the air conditioning industry.

Abstract
Several tests have been advocated for diagnosis of insulin dysregulation (ID). Tests using simple sugars may not reflect the response to naturally ingested carbohydrates. This study aimed to evaluate agreement between the oral glucose test (OGT), the oral sugar test (OST), a novel oral test using a proprietary cereal (WEET), the IV combined glucose-insulin tolerance test (CGIT) and fasted basal insulin (FI) for diagnosis of ID. Each of the five tests above was performed on a group of six normal and six insulin dysregulated mixed-breed ponies in a randomised crossover study. Area under the curve (AUC) and maximum concentration of insulin from OGT, OST and WEET showed strong to very strong bivariate correlations (r = 0.85-0.94, and r = 0.87-0.92, respectively; P ≤ 0.001) and were significantly different between tests (associated with dose of carbohydrate) and between CGIT-positive and -negative ponies. Dichotomous results showed substantial agreement between OST and both WEET (κ = 0.65; P = 0.02) and OGT (κ = 0.67; P = 0.01) and between CGIT and both OST (κ = 0.63; P = 0.03) and OGT (κ = 0.67; P = 0.01), and no agreement between FI, which had low sensitivity, and all other tests (κ = 0.15 - 0.31; P > 0. 05). Palatability of WEET was variable, resulting in one pony being excluded for analysis of WEET data. Further work on development of an oral test using a more palatable feedstuff and appropriate cut-offs or diagnostic thresholds for tests of ID is warranted.

Abstract
Sourdough fermentation is attracting growing attention because of its positive effects on properties of leavened baked good. However, the changes in dough features and the mechanisms behind them are not well understood, which limits its widespread use. In this study, we assessed the effects of representative lactic acid bacteria in sourdough monoculture or co-culture with yeasts on dough characteristics. Physicochemical analysis identified increased proteolysis and enhanced nutritional properties of co-culture groups. However, a reduction in organic acids contents of co-culture groups compared to monoculture was detected, and this effect was not limited by the yeast species. The RNA sequencing further demonstrated that the presence of yeast enhanced the protein metabolic activity of lactic acid bacteria, while decreased its organic acid biosynthetic activity. Moreover, the proteomic analysis revealed that endogenous metabolic proteins of flour, such as pyruvate kinase, glucosyltransferase and pyruvate dehydrogenase play a key role in carbohydrate metabolism during fermentation. This study uncovered the influence of typical microorganisms and endogenous enzymes on dough characteristics based on different aspects. Bacteria-mediated consumption of proteins and increased proteolysis in co-culture groups may underlie the improved digestibility and nutritional effects of sourdough fermented products, which provides an important basis for nutrient fortified bread making with multi-strain leavening agent.

Abstract
Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is an environmentally-safe algaecide used to control harmful algal blooms and as a disinfectant in various domestic and industrial applications. It is produced naturally in sunny-water or as a by-product during growth, and metabolism of photosynthetic organisms. To assess the impact of H2O2 on Arthrospira platensis, several biochemical components, and antioxidant enzymes were analysed. The growth and biomass of A. platensis were decreased under the effect of H2O2. Whereas, the concentration up to 40 μM H2O2 non-significantly induced (at P < 0.05) the Chl a, C-phycocyanin (C-PC), total phycobiliprotein (PBP), and the radical scavenging activity of A. platensis. The half-maximal effective concentrations (EC50) for H2O2 were 57, 65, and 74 μM H2O2 with regards to the biomass yield, Chl a, and C-PC content, respectively. While, the total soluble protein, and soluble carbohydrates contents were significantly induced. However, the higher concentrations (60 and 80 μM) were lethal to these components, in parallel to the initiation of the lipid peroxidation process. Surprisingly, the carotenoids content was non-significantly increased by H2O2. Despite the relative consistency of catalase (CAT), the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) enzymes were boosted by all of the tested concentrations of H2O2. The relative transcript abundance of selected regulatory genes was also investigated. Except for the highest dose (80 μM), the tested concentrations had almost inhibitory effect on the relative transcripts of heat shock protein (HSP90), glutamate synthase (GOGAT), delta-9 desaturase (desC), iron-superoxide dismutase (FeSOD) and the Rubisco (the large subunit, rbcL) genes. The results demonstrated the importance of the non-enzymatic and enzymatic antioxidants for the cumulative tolerance of A. platensis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Physique athletes are ranked by a panel of judges against the judging criteria of the corresponding division. To enhance on-stage presentation and performance, competitors in certain categories (i.e. bodybuilding and classic physique) achieve extreme muscle size and definition aided by implementing acute "peaking protocols" in the days before competition. Such practices can involve manipulating nutrition and training variables to increase intramuscular glycogen and water while minimising the thickness of the subcutaneous layer. Carbohydrate manipulation is a prevalent strategy utilised to plausibly induce muscle glycogen supercompensation and subsequently increase muscle size. The relationship between carbohydrate intake and muscle glycogen saturation was first examined in endurance event performance and similar strategies have been adopted by physique athletes despite the distinct physiological dissimilarities and aims between the sports. OBJECTIVES The aim of this narrative review is to (1) critically examine and appraise the existing scientific literature relating to carbohydrate manipulation practices in physique athletes prior to competition; (2) identify research gaps and provide direction for future studies; and (3) provide broad practical applications based on the findings and physiological reasoning for coaches and competitors. FINDINGS The findings of this review indicate that carbohydrate manipulation practices are prevalent amongst physique athletes despite a paucity of experimental evidence demonstrating the efficacy of such strategies on physique performance. Competitors have also been observed to manipulate water and electrolytes in conjunction with carbohydrate predicated on speculative physiological mechanisms which may be detrimental for performance. CONCLUSIONS Further experimental evidence which closely replicates the nutritional and training practices of physique athletes during peak week is required to make conclusions on the efficacy of carbohydrate manipulation strategies. Quasi-experimental designs may be a feasible alternative to randomised controlled trials to examine such strategies due to the difficulty in recruiting the population of interest. Finally, we recommend that coaches and competitors manipulate as few variables as possible, and experiment with different magnitudes of carbohydrate loads in advance of competition if implementing a peaking strategy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Pseudochlorella pringsheimii (Ppr) is a green unicellular alga rich with chlorophyll, carotenoids, and antioxidants. As a widespread organism, Ppr must face, and adapt to, many environmental stresses and these are becoming more frequent and more extreme under the conditions of climate change. We therefore focused on salinity induced by NaCl and iron (Fe) variation stresses, which are commonly encountered by algae in their natural environment. RESULTS The relatively low stress levels improved the biomass, growth rate, and biochemical components of Ppr. In addition, the radical-scavenging activity, reducing power, and chelating activity were stimulated by lower iron concentrations and all NaCl concentrations. We believe that the alga has adapted to the stressors by increasing certain biomolecules such as carotenoids, phenolics, proteins, and carbohydrates. These act as antioxidants and osmoregulators to protect cell membranes and other cellular components from the harmful effects of ions. We have used SDS-PAGE and 2D-PAGE in combination with tandem mass spectrometry to identify responsive proteins in the proteomes of stressed vs. non-stressed Ppr. The results of 2D-PAGE analysis showed a total of 67 differentially expressed proteins, and SDS-PAGE identified 559 peptides corresponding to 77 proteins. Of these, 15, 8, and 17 peptides were uniquely identified only under the control, iron, and salinity treatments, respectively. The peptides were classified into 12 functional categories: energy metabolism (the most notable proteins), carbohydrate metabolism, regulation, photosynthesis, protein synthesis, stress proteins, oxido-reductase proteins, transfer proteins, ribonucleic-associated proteins, hypothetical proteins, and unknown proteins. The number of identified peptides was higher under salinity stress compared to iron stress. CONCLUSIONS A proposed mechanism for the adaptation of Ppr to stress is discussed based on the collected data. This data could serve as reference material for algal proteomics and the mechanisms involved in mediating stress tolerance.

Abstract
Background/purpose Periodontitis is a chronic multifactorial inflammatory disease with dental plaque accumulation. This study aimed to analyze the association between carbohydrate-to-fiber ratio and periodontitis risk. Materials and methods In this cross-sectional study, the data of 6470 participants aged ≥30 years with available oral health exam data of periodontal status were collected from NHANES 2009-2014. Participants were divided into no & mild periodontitis group (n = 3309) and moderate & severe periodontitis group (n = 3161). The possible correlation between the carbohydrate-to-fiber ratio and the risk of periodontitis was explored via univariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses. Odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were applied as the effect size. Results After adjusting for all the confounding factors, carbohydrate-to-fiber ratio <10.89 (OR = 0.82, 95% CI: 0.69-0.97), carbohydrate-to-fiber ratio of 10.89-14.02 (OR = 0.74, 95% CI: 0.63-0.87), carbohydrate-to-fiber ratio of 14.03-18.47 (OR = 0.83, 95% CI: 0.71-0.97) were correlated with reduced risk of periodontitis. In people aged ≥65 years, carbohydrate-to-fiber ratio of 10.89-14.02 (OR = 0.54, 95% CI: 0.30-0.95) and carbohydrate-to-fiber ratio of 14.03-18.47 (OR = 0.56, 95% CI: 0.37-0.86) were correlated with reduced risk of periodontitis in comparison with carbohydrate-to-fiber ratio ≥18.48 group. The decreased risk of periodontitis was also found in males with carbohydrate-to-fiber ratio of 10.89-14.02 (OR = 0.69, 95% CI: 0.49-0.97) and carbohydrate-to-fiber ratio of 14.03-18.47 (OR = 0.73, 95% CI: 0.56-0.95). In people without diabetes, we found that those with carbohydrate-to-fiber ratio <10.89 (OR = 0.75, 95% CI: 0.61-0.93), carbohydrate-to-fiber ratio of 10.89-14.02 (OR = 0.68, 95% CI: 0.53-0.88) and carbohydrate-to-fiber ratio of 14.03-18.47 (OR = 0.84, 95% CI: 0.70-0.99) were linked with lower risk of periodontitis. Conclusion Low carbohydrate-to-fiber ratio was associated with decreased risk of periodontitis.

Abstract
Lactococcus spp. are applied routinely in dairy fermentations and their consistent growth and associated acidification activity is critical to ensure the quality and safety of fermented dairy foods. Bacteriophages pose a significant threat to such fermentations and thus it is imperative to study how these bacteria may evade their viral predators in the relevant confined settings. Many lactococcal phages are known to specifically recognise and bind to cell wall polysaccharides (CWPSs) and particularly the phospho-polysaccharide (PSP) side chain component that is exposed on the host cell surface. In the present study, we generated derivatives of a lactococcal strain with reduced phage sensitivity to establish the mode of phage evasion. The resulting mutants were characterized using a combination of comparative genome analysis, microbiological and chemical analyses. Using these approaches, it was established that the phage-resistant derivatives incorporated mutations in genes within the cluster associated with CWPS biosynthesis resulting in growth and morphological defects that could revert when the selective pressure of phages was removed. Furthermore, the cell wall extracts of selected mutants revealed that the phage-resistant strains produced intact PSP but in significantly reduced amounts. The reduced availability of the PSP and the ability of lactococcal strains to revert rapidly to wild type growth and activity in the absence of phage pressure provides Lactococcus with the means to survive and evade phage attack.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oral carbohydrate (CHO) intake is a safe method with effective clinical results in various surgical patients before surgery. Nevertheless, due to a lack of adequate clinical data, it is not frequently utilized in older patients undergoing orthopedic surgery for osteoporotic fractures (OPFs), especially in China. The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between preoperative oral CHO consumption and outcomes in elderly patients undergoing surgical treatment for OPFs. METHODS This retrospective cohort study was conducted at a single Chinese institution and included a total of 879 elderly patients (median age: 71 years; range: 50-99 years) who underwent OPF surgery. Various exclusion criteria were established as follows: (a) the necessity for urgent surgical intervention; (b) the existence of hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, or diabetes mellitus with blood glucose levels lower than 2.8 mmol/L; (c) a medical history of gastrointestinal motility disorders or delayed gastric emptying; (d) the utilization of local anesthesia; (e) a Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) score over 2; and (f) an American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) score exceeding 3. After propensity score (PS) matching, 264 patients from each cohort were included in the analysis. The primary outcome was the all-cause mortality rate within 60 days post-surgery, while secondary outcomes included the length of hospital stay (LOS), hospitalization costs, intraoperative and postoperative blood transfusions, and the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) and aspiration. The relationship between preoperative oral CHO intake and outcomes was evaluated using multivariate regression analysis. RESULTS After PS matching, preoperative oral CHO intake was negatively associated with 60-day mortality in the fully adjusted model (odds ratio 0.35; 95% confidence interval 0.12-0.97; P-value: 0.04). Patients who received preoperative oral CHO intake also had a shorter LOS and lower hospitalization costs than those who did not receive CHO intake. However, none of the models showed a significant association between CHO intake and PONV or blood transfusion risk. Furthermore, no cases of aspiration were observed in either cohort. CONCLUSIONS Preoperative oral CHO intake may be associated with reduced mortality risk and improved outcomes in elderly patients undergoing surgical treatment for OPFs. However, it is important to acknowledge the limitations of our study, including its retrospective nature, potential unmeasured confounding variables, the small sample size, incomplete data on important variables such as duration of surgery and inflammatory markers, and the limited generalizability due to the participation of only one institution. Future research with larger sample sizes and a broader range of events is warranted to validate and enhance the validity of our findings, particularly in assessing long-term results and understanding the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
An easy and efficient large-scale synthesis of 1, 2,-di-O-acetyl-5-O-benzoyl-3-O-methyl-d-ribofuranose (8) was accomplished from commercial 1,2:5,6-di-O-isopropylidene-α-d-allofuranose in 7-steps and 30 % overall yield. The utility of protected 8 was demonstrated via synthesis of 9-(3'-O-methyl-β-d-ribofuranosyl)-6-chloropurine (21) and six other nucleoside analogues in good yields. A library of five novel base modified nucleosides were generated starting from purine nucleoside 21 via functional group manipulations. The 3'-O-modified nucleosides are known to act as chain terminator exerting antiviral activity. The synthesis strategy described herein offers direct access to 3'-O-alkylated nucleosides with wide range of applications, including cap analogues for mRNA vaccine production. This protocol provides a route to exclusive synthesis of 3'-O-alkylated nucleosides, devoid of isomeric 2'-O-alkylated products essential for both therapeutic and biological research.

Abstract
A solid-liquid separation process is crucial for the utilization of hydrochar from biomasses through hydrothermal carbonization (HTC). This study aimed to evaluate the separation performance of hydrochar from coking sludge (CS) and municipal sludge (MS) via HTC and propose its mechanistic insights. The results indicated that the separation performance of hydrochar was enhanced, and relatively severe hydrothermal temperatures exerted a relatively stronger dewatering effect (53.25% and 77.05% reductions in the total water contents in CS and MS, respectively) and a superior separation efficiency (the specific resistance to filtration of products obtained from CS and MS decreased form 7.21 × 1011 and 2.46 × 1012 to 1.92 × 1010 m/kg and 2.14 × 1011 m/kg, respectively). Mechanism investigation involved analyzing the surface functional groups of hydrochar and changes in organic components. It was demonstrated that the improvement in dewatering effect predominantly resulted from the release of bound water due to the decomposition of carbohydrates and proteins. Specifically, the release of bound water depended on the decomposition of carbohydrates at 180 °C, while it relied on the decomposition of proteins in the 210-300 °C range. Compared with particle size, the hydrophilicity of the particle played a more important role in improving the separation efficiency. The HTC reaction eliminated hydrophilic groups, such as hydroxyl and carboxyl groups, and induced the formation of aromatic structures, thus reducing the hydrophilicity of hydrochar particles. Moreover, it was found that the lower heating value of hydrochar from CS and MS increased from 3.51 to 1.94 to 8.32 and 4.60 MJ/kg due to the improvement of the separation efficiency. These comprehensive findings provide valuable mechanistic insights into the solid-liquid separation process and controlling the dewaterability of hydrochar.

Abstract
Background Many factors like sedentary lifestyle, metabolic syndrome, and obesity are involved in the increased prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Dietary consumption of carbohydrates may has a role in the risk of NAFLD. This study aimed to investigate the association of NAFLD with the different types of dietary carbohydrates. Methods This cross-sectional study was carried out on 4200 participants including 660 patients with NAFLD and 3540 helathy individuals without NAFLD ages 35 to 70 in sabzevar, Iran. Data on socio-deomgraphic status, anthropomrtric measurments, blood tests, and dietary intake of different types of dietary carbohydrates was collected. Results The patients with NAFLD had a significantly higher dietary intake of glucose (29.38 ± 18.29 vs. 27.42 ± 15.96 g/d, P = 0.01) and fructose (33.99 ± 20.19 vs. 31.95 ± 18.34 g/d, P = 0.01) compared to the healthy people. A positive association was observed between NAFLD with the total intake of carbohydrates after adjustment for age, sex, and BMI (OR: 1.001, CI 95%: 1-1.002, P = 0.04) The association remained significant after further adjustments for for education level, marital status, physical activity, smoking, and drinking alcohol (Model 2) and after additional adjustments for calorie intake (Model 3). Conclusions This study showed a positive association between total dietary carbohydrate and NAFLD. In particular, the amount of dietary of carbohydrates (regardless of the type of carbohydrate) may worsen NAFLD. Further longitudinal studies are warranted.

Abstract
A hot spring is a distinctive aquatic environment that provides an excellent system to investigate microorganisms and their function in elemental cycling processes. Previous studies of terrestrial hot springs have been mostly focused on the microbial community, one special phylum or category, or genes involved in a particular metabolic step, while little is known about the overall functional metabolic profiles of microorganisms inhabiting the terrestrial hot springs. Here, we analyzed the microbial community structure and their functional genes based on metagenomic sequencing of six selected hot springs with different temperature and pH conditions. We sequenced a total of 11 samples from six hot springs and constructed 162 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) with completeness above 70% and contamination lower than 10%. Crenarchaeota, Euryarchaeota and Aquificae were found to be the dominant phyla. Functional annotation revealed that bacteria encode versatile carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZYmes) for the degradation of complex polysaccharides, while archaea tend to assimilate C1 compounds through carbon fixation. Under nitrogen-deficient conditions, there were correspondingly fewer genes involved in nitrogen metabolism, while abundant and diverse set of genes participating in sulfur metabolism, particularly those associated with sulfide oxidation and thiosulfate disproportionation. In summary, archaea and bacteria residing in the hot springs display distinct carbon metabolism fate, while sharing the common energy preference through sulfur metabolism. Overall, this research contributes to a better comprehension of biogeochemistry of terrestrial hot springs.

Abstract
In carbohydrate chemistry, the stereoselective synthesis of 1,2-cis-glycosides remains a formidable challenge. This complexity is comparable to the synthesis of 1,2-cis-β-D-mannosides, primarily due to the adverse anomeric and Δ-2 effects. Over the past decades, to attain β-stereoselectivity in D-rhamnosylation, researchers have devised numerous direct and indirect methodologies, including the hydrogen-bond-mediated aglycone delivery (HAD) method, the synthesis of β-D-mannoside paired with C6 deoxygenation, and the combined approach of 1,2-trans-glycosylation and C2 epimerization. This review elaborates on the advancements in β-D-rhamnosylation and its implications for the total synthesis of tiacumicin B and other physiologically relevant glycans.

Abstract
A simple and efficient protocol for the preparation of α-glycosyl chlorides within 15-30 min is described which employs a stable, cheap, and commercially available Trichloroisocyanuric acid (TCCA) as non-toxic chlorinating agent along with PPh3. This process involved a wide range of substrate scope and is well-suited with labile hydroxyl protecting groups such as benzyl, acetyl, benzoyl, isopropylidene, benzylidene, and TBDPS (tert-butyldiphenylsilyl) groups. This process is operationally simple, mild conditions and obtained good yields with excellent α selectivity. Moreover, a multi-catalyst one-pot glycosylation can be carried out to transform the glycosyl hemiacetals directly to a various O-glycosides in high overall yields without the need for separation or purification of the α-glycosyl chloride donors.

Abstract
An efficient one-pot synthesis of a new series of mannosyl triazoles has been achieved through CuAAC reaction where the alkyl chain spacer between the phthalimide moiety and the triazole ring in the aglycone backbone is varied from one methylene to six methylene units. The target compounds were evaluated in terms of their inhibitory potency against FimH using hemagglutination inhibition (HAI) assay. It was found that the length of four methylene units was the optimum for the fitting/binding of the compound to FimH as exemplified by compound 11 (HAI = 1.9 μM), which was approximately 200 times more potent than the reference ligand 1(HAI = 385 μM). The successful implementation of one-pot protocol with building blocks 1-7 and the architecture of ligand 11 will be the subject of our future work for developing more potent FimH inhibitors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Low energy availability (LEA) can have negative performance consequences, but the relationships between LEA and performance are poorly understood especially in field conditions. In addition, little is known about the contribution of macronutrients to long-term performance. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate if energy availability (EA) and macronutrient intake in a field-based situation were associated with laboratory-measured performance, anthropometric characteristics, blood markers, training volume, and/or questionnaire-assessed risk of LEA in young female cross-country (XC) skiers. In addition, the study aimed to clarify which factors explained performance. METHODS During a one-year observational study, 23 highly trained female XC skiers and biathletes (age 17.1 ± 1.0 years) completed 3-day food and training logs on four occasions (September-October, February-March, April-May, July-August). Mean (±SD) EA and macronutrient intake from these 12 days were calculated to describe yearly overall practices. Laboratory measurements (body composition with bioimpedance, blood hormone concentrations, maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), oxygen uptake (VO2) at 4 mmol·L-1 lactate threshold (OBLA), double poling (DP) performance (time to exhaustion), counter movement jump (height) and the Low Energy Availability in Females Questionnaire (LEAF-Q)) were completed at the beginning (August 2020, M1) and end of the study (August 2021, M2). Annual training volume between measurements was recorded using an online training diary. RESULTS The 12-day mean EA (37.4 ± 9.1 kcal·kg FFM-1·d-1) and carbohydrate (CHO) intake (4.8 ± 0.8 g·kg-1·d-1) were suboptimal while intake of protein (1.8 ± 0.3 g·kg-1·d-1) and fat (31 ± 4 E%) were within recommended ranges. Lower EA and CHO intake were associated with a higher LEAF-Q score (r = 0.44, p = 0.042; r = 0.47, p = 0.026). Higher CHO and protein intake were associated with higher VO2max (r = 0.61, p = 0.005; r = 0.54, p = 0.014), VO2 at OBLA (r = 0.63, p = 0.003; r = 0.62, p = 0.003), and DP performance at M2 (r = 0.42, p = 0.051; r = 0.44, p = 0.039). Body fat percentage (F%) was negatively associated with CHO and protein intake (r = -0.50, p = 0.017; r = -0.66, p = 0.001). Better DP performance at M2 was explained by higher training volume (R2 = 0.24, p = 0.033) and higher relative VO2max and VO2 at OBLA at M2 by lower F% (R2 = 0.44, p = 0.004; R2 = 0.47, p = 0.003). Increase from M1 to M2 in DP performance was explained by a decrease in F% (R2 = 0.25, p = 0.029). CONCLUSIONS F%, and training volume were the most important factors explaining performance in young female XC skiers. Notably, lower F% was associated with higher macronutrient intake, suggesting that restricting nutritional intake may not be a good strategy to modify body composition in young female athletes. In addition, lower overall CHO intake and EA increased risk of LEA determined by LEAF-Q. These findings highlight the importance of adequate nutritional intake to support performance and overall health.

Abstract
Rice is the only crop which is well adapted to aquatic environment but, it is unable to survive if completely submerged for several weeks. Breeding rice varieties with submergence tolerance is one of the best approaches to alleviate the adverse effect of submergence which requires the introgression of Sub1 gene into elite rice varieties. Hence, the study was undertaken to introgress submergence tolerant gene into the rice variety Jaya through Marker-Assisted Backcross Breeding. Also the physiological and biochemical responses like survival percentage, underwater shoot elongation, total carbohydrate content and superoxide dismutase activity were also studied in Sub1 introgressed lines. We could develop twenty Sub1 introgressed lines with Sub1 region of 3.1-5.1mb and with 80.0- 95.3% recurrent parent genome recovery. Sub1 introgressed Jaya lines and the tolerant checks FR13A and Swarna Sub1 had lower shoot elongation under water, higher superoxide dismutase activity (about 5 times) upto 4 h after de-submergence which resulted in higher survival percentage. The reduced shoot elongation of tolerant varieties reduced the utilization of stored carbohydrate. Through our research we introgressed Sub1 gene into rice variety Jaya through Marker-Assisted Backcross Breeding and could study the physiological responses under submergence by which we confirmed the presence of Sub1 gene in these lines. These lines could be field evaluated and could be released as a new variety thus helping the farmers of flood prone areas of Kerala.

Abstract
The effectiveness of exercise to reduce body mass is typically modest, partially due to energy compensation responses which may be linked to energy substrate availability around exercise. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of manipulating post-exercise energy substrate availability (high carbohydrate/low fat [HCLF] or low carbohydrate/high fat [LCHF] energy replacement) on energy balance components in the short-term (i.e., appetite, energy intake (EI) and energy expenditure (EE)). METHODS Appetite, EI, activity- and total- EE were measured in twelve healthy, young (21.0 ± 2.3 years) physically active participants (10 men, 2 women) on two occasions across 4 days after a 75-min run and an isocaloric energy replacement drink (HCLF and LCHF). Appetite was measured daily by visual analogue scales, EI was calculated by subtracting the energy content of food leftovers from a provided food package, activity- and total- EE determined by heart-rate accelerometery. RESULTS Composite appetite ratings between days were lower in HCLF (62.4 ± 12) compared to LCHF (68.3 ± 8.9 mm; p = 0.048). No differences between conditions were detected for EI. Cumulative activity-EE (HCLF= 20.9 ± 3.7, LCHF= 16.9 ± 3.1 MJ; p = 0.037), but not total-EE (HCLF= 44.6 ± 7.7, LCHF= 39.9 ± 4.7 MJ; p = 0.060), was higher for the HCLF condition than the LCHF across the measurement period. CONCLUSION Compared with low carbohydrate/high fat, immediate post-exercise energy replacement with a high carbohydrate/low fat drink resulted in higher short-term activity energy expenditure and lower appetite ratings.

Abstract
Background Previous meta-analyses have assessed the relationship between carbohydrate intake and type 2 diabetes (T2D) risk; however, they included few studies of Asian populations who have a higher carbohydrate intake and lower insulin secretory capacity than non-Asians. Since the publication of the previous meta-analyses, three further studies of Asian populations have been conducted. Based on this background, the present study aimed to perform an updated systematically examine observational studies concerning the link between dietary carbohydrate intake and T2D risk. Methods We conducted a systematic search for cohort studies that investigated the target association. For each analyzed study, parameter-adjusted risk ratios were used to compare the lowest and highest carbohydrate-intake groups in terms of their risk of incident T2D. The risk ratios were calculated using a random-effects model. Results Ten publications were analyzed. Overall, carbohydrate intake was found not to be associated with increased risk ratios of incident T2D (risk ratio [RR] = 1.07; 95% confidence interval [95% CI] = 0.94, 1.21; P < 0.01, I2 = 61.9%). However, studies of Asian populations reported that high carbohydrate intake is significantly associated with this risk (RR = 1.29; 95% CI 1.15, 1.45; P = 0.59, I2 = 0.0%). Conclusions This updated meta-analysis showed that, overall, carbohydrate intake is not associated with the risk of T2D; nevertheless, a significant association exists among Asian populations. To confirm the association between dietary carbohydrate intake and T2D risk observed in this study, further evidence from long-term observational studies of Asian populations is required. Abstract
Cold plasma (CP) is one of the novel non-thermal food processing technologies, which has the potential to extend the shelf-life of plant-based food products without adversely affecting the nutritional value and sensory characteristics. Besides microbial inactivation, this technology has been explored for food functionality, pesticide control, and allergen removals. Cold plasma technology presents positive results in applications related to food processing at a laboratory scale. This review discusses applications of CP technology and its effect on the constituents of plant-based food products including proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, and polar and non-polar secondary plant metabolites. As proven by the publications in the food field, the influence of CP on the food constituents and sensory quality of various food materials are mainly based on CP-related factors such as processing time, voltage level, power, frequency, type of gas, gas flow rate as well as the amount of sample, type, and content of food constituents. In addition to these, changes in the secondary plant metabolites depend on the action of CP on both cell membrane breakdown and increase/decrease in the scavenging compounds. This technology offers a good alternative to conventional methods by inactivating enzymes and increasing antioxidant levels. With a waterless and chemical-free property, this sustainable and energy-efficient technology presents several advantages in food applications. However, scaling up CP by ensuring uniform plasma treatment is a major challenge. Further investigation is required to provide information regarding the toxicity of plasma-treated food products.

Abstract
Novel water-soluble half-sandwich ruthenium(II) polypyridyl-glycoconjugates [Ru(p-cymene)Cl{N-(1,10-phenanthroline-5-yl)-β-glycopyranosylamine}][Cl] (glycopyranosyl = d-glucopyranosyl (1), D-mannopyranosyl (2), L-rhamnopyranosyl (3) and l-xylopyranosyl (4)) have been synthesized and fully characterized. Their behaviour in water under physiological conditions has been studied by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, revealing their hydrolytic stability. Interactions of the novel compounds with duplex-deoxiribonucleic acid (dsDNA) were investigated by different techniques and the results indicate that, under physiological pH and saline conditions, the metal glycoconjugates bind DNA in the minor groove and/or through external, electrostatic interactions, and by a non-classical, partial intercalation mechanism in non-saline phosphate buffered solution. Effects of compounds 1-4 on cell viability have been assessed in vitro against two human cell lines (androgen-independent prostate cancer PC-3 and non-tumorigenic prostate RWPE-1), showing moderate cytotoxicities, with IC50 values higher than those found for free ligands [N-(1,10-phenanthroline-5-yl)-β-glycopyranosylamine] (glycopyranosyl = d-glucopyranosyl (a), D-mannopyranosyl (b), L-rhamnopyranosyl (c) and l-xylopyranosyl (d)) or corresponding metal-aglycone. Cell viability was assayed in the presence and absence of the glucose transporters (GLUTs) inhibitor [N4-{1-(4-cyanobenzyl)-5-methyl-3-(trifluoromethyl)-1H-pyrazol-4-yl}-7-fluoroquinoline-2,4-dicarboxamide] (BAY-876), and the results point to a negligible impact of the inhibition of GLUTs on the cytotoxicity caused by Ru(II) compounds 1-4. Remarkably, glycoconjugates 1-4 potently affect the migration pattern of PC-3 cells, and the wound healing assay evidence that the presence of the carbohydrate and the Ru(II) center is a requisite for the anti-migratory activity observed in these novel derivatives. In addition, derivatives 1-4 strongly affect the matrix metalloproteinase MMP-9 activities of PC-3 cells, while proMMP-2 and especially proMMP-9 were influenced to a much lesser extent.

Abstract
Hypoxia is a common environmental stress factor in aquatic organisms, which varies among fish species. However, the mechanisms underlying the ability of fish species to tolerate hypoxia are not well known. Here, we showed that hypoxia response in different fish species was affected by lipid catabolism and preference for lipid or carbohydrate energy sources. Activation of biochemical lipid catabolism through peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (Pparα) or increasing mitochondrial fat oxidation in tilapia decreased tolerance to acute hypoxia by increasing oxygen consumption and oxidative damage and reducing carbohydrate catabolism as an energy source. Conversely, lipid catabolism inhibition by suppressing entry of lipids into mitochondria in tilapia or individually knocking out three key genes of lipid catabolism in zebrafish increased tolerance to acute hypoxia by decreasing oxygen consumption and oxidative damage and promoting carbohydrate catabolism. However, anaerobic glycolysis suppression eliminated lipid catabolism inhibition-promoted hypoxia tolerance in adipose triglyceride lipase (atgl) mutant zebrafish. Using 14 fish species with different trophic levels and taxonomic status, the fish preferentially using lipids for energy were more intolerant to acute hypoxia than those preferentially using carbohydrates. Our study shows that hypoxia tolerance in fish depends on catabolic preference for lipids or carbohydrates, which can be modified by regulating lipid catabolism.

Abstract
Glycosyl radical functionalization is one of the central topics in synthetic carbohydrate chemistry. Recent advances in metal-catalyzed cross-coupling chemistry and metallaphotoredox catalysis provided powerful platforms for glycosyl radical diversification. In particular, the discovery of new glycosyl radical precursors in conjunction with these advanced reaction technologies have significantly expanded the space for glycosyl compound synthesis. In this Review, we highlight the most recent progress in this area starting from 2021, and the reports included will be categorized based on different reaction types for better clarity.

Abstract
Changing the growth environment for microalgae can overall lead to the fundamental alteration in cellular biochemicals whilst attaching onto palm kernel expeller (PKE) waste to form adhesion complex in easing harvesting at stationary growth phase. This study had initially optimized the PKE dosage, light intensity and photoperiod in maximizing the attached microalgal productivity being attained at 0.72 g/g day. Lipid content increased progressively from pH 3 to pH 11, with the highest value observed at pH 11. Meanwhile, in terms of protein and carbohydrate contents, the highest values were obtained by cultivation medium of pH 5 with 9.92 g and 17.72 g, respectively followed by pH 7 with 9.16 g and 16.36 g, respectively. Moreover, the findings also suggested that the low pH mediums utilized polar interactions in the formation of complexes between PKE and microalgae, whereas at higher pH levels, the non-polar interactions became more significant. The work of attachment was thermodynamically favourable towards the attachment formation with values greater than zero which was also aligned with the microscopic surface topography, i.e., revealing a clustering pattern of microalgae colonizing the PKE surface. These findings contribute to comprehensive understanding of optimizing growth condition and harvesting strategy of attached microalgae in attaining the cellular biochemical components, facilitating the development of efficient and sustainable bioresource utilization.

Abstract
The Proboscis Extension Reflex (PER) paradigm trains honey bees to associate an odor with a sugar reward and is commonly used to assess impacts on associative learning after exposure to pesticides. While the effects of some types of pesticides have been well-investigated, relatively little attention has been focused on fungicides that are applied to flowering crops. We have previously shown that consumption of field-relevant concentrations of the fungicide Pristine® (active ingredients: 25.2% boscalid, 12.8% pyraclostrobin) impairs honey bee performance in an associative learning assay, but the mechanism of its action has not been investigated. We hypothesized that Pristine® interferes with carbohydrate absorption and/or regulation, thereby disrupting the post-ingestive feedback mechanisms necessary for robust learning. To test this hypothesis, we measured hemolymph glucose and trehalose levels at five time points during the ten minutes after bees consumed a sucrose solution. Pristine®-exposed bees had elevated baseline glucose concentrations in the hemolymph relative to control bees. Hemolymph glucose levels rose significantly within five minutes of feeding in control bees, but not in Pristine®-fed bees. These data suggest that the post-ingestive feedback mechanisms necessary for robust learning are disrupted in bees that have consumed this fungicide, providing a plausible mechanistic explanation for its effects on learning performance in the PER assay. Pristine®-exposed bees may have elevated hemolymph glucose levels because the fungicide elicits an inflammatory response. These results provide additional mechanistic understanding of the negative physiological effects of mitotoxic fungicides on this important pollinator.

Abstract
Cat food production is a billion-dollar industry in the United States, with most pet owners trusting pet food companies to provide their pets with complete nutrition. Moist or canned cat food is healthier than dry kibble for cats due to its higher water content promoting healthy kidney function, but ingredient labels on canned cat food are lengthy with ambiguous terminology including 'animal by-products.' Forty canned cat food samples were collected from grocery stores and were processed using routine histologic methods. Hematoxylin and eosin-stained tissue sections were evaluated microscopically to determine the cat food content. Many brands and flavors were composed of well-preserved skeletal muscles admixed with various animal organs, which closely approximates nutritional components found in natural feline prey. However, several samples demonstrated marked degenerative changes suggesting a delay in food processing and potential decrease in nutrient content. Four samples contained cuts consisting of skeletal muscle only with no organ meat. Surprisingly, 10 samples contained fungal spores and 15 demonstrated refractile particulate matter. A cost analysis demonstrated that although the overall quality of canned cat food increases as the average cost per ounce increases, low-cost high-quality canned cat food is available.

Abstract
Recently, concern on several environmental issues including the pollutant discharge and high concentration of CO2 have gained high interest due to its impact on ecosystem and global warming effect, respectively. Implementation of photosynthetic microorganism carries out numerous advantages including high efficiency of CO2 fixation, the great endurance under extreme conditions and generation of valuable bioproducts. Thermosynechococcus sp. CL-1 (TCL-1), a cyanobacterium, has the ability to perform CO2 fixation and accumulation of various byproducts under extreme conditions like high temperature and alkalinity, presence of estrogen, or even using swine wastewater. This study aimed to assess TCL-1 performance under various endocrine disruptor compounds (bisphenol-A, 17-β-estradiol/E2, and 17-α-ethynilestradiol/EE2), concentrations (0-10 mg/L), light intensities (500-2000 µE/m2/s), and dissolved inorganic carbon/DIC levels (0-113.2 mM). Addition of E2 content even until 10 mg/L carried out insignificant biomass growth interruption along with the improvement in CO2 fixation rate (79.8 ± 0.1 mg/L/h). Besides the influence of E2, application of higher DIC level and light intensity also enhanced the CO2 fixation rate and biomass growth. The highest biodegradation of E2 at 71% was achieved by TCL-1 in the end of 12 h cultivation period. TCL-1 dominantly produced protein (46.7% ± 0.2%), however, production of lipid and carbohydrate (39.5 ± 1.5 and 23.3 ± 0.9%, respectively) also could be considered as the potential source for biofuel production. Thus, this study can provide an efficient strategy in simultaneously dealing with environmental issues with side advantage in production of macromolecules.

Abstract
5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a versatile platform chemical derived from the dehydration of renewable carbohydrates (typically glucose/fructose-based monosaccharides, oligosaccharides, and polysaccharides). Some useful compounds, such as 2,5-furandimethanol (FDM), 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) and 2,5-dimethyltetrahydrofuran (DMTHF), have been synthesized by reduction of HMF. Among these, FDM is a promising diol and can be further converted towards fine chemicals, liquid fuels and polymer materials. In this review, some typical catalytic systems for the synthesis of FDM from both HMF and carbohydrates were summarized. The discussion focused on controlling the reaction networks for the reduction of HMF. The reaction mechanisms and the stability of the catalysts were introduced briefly. Last but not least, the prospects of effective production of FDM were discussed as well.
