Abstract
A significant quantity of biologically produced sulfur (BPS) is generated as a by-product of chemical and biological desulfurization processes applied to landfill gas treatment. The beneficial upcycling of BPS has seen limited use in the environmental context. The effectiveness and underlying mechanism of BPS as an adsorbent for removing Hg2+ from both solution and wastewater were elucidated based on experiments encompassing surface characterization, adsorption isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamics. The BPS exhibited remarkable efficacy in removing Hg2+ from solution, with the Langmuir model accurately describing the adsorption process and showing a maximum adsorption capacity of 244 mg g-1. Surface analysis through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy revealed that Hg2+ complexed with sulfide on BPS surfaces, forming stable HgS. The adsorbed Hg was strongly retained in BPS, with less than 0.2% of the adsorbed Hg desorbed by strong acids. Adsorption kinetics followed the double-exponential first-order model, showing an initial rapid adsorption phase wherein 75% of the initial Hg2+ was removed within 5 min, followed by a slower adsorption rate. The thermodynamic parameters suggested that adsorption of Hg2+ by BPS was a spontaneous and endothermic process. Additionally, BPS effectively removed Hg2+ from wastewater, showing preference for Hg over other co-existing metals. These findings underscore the potential of BPS as an effective adsorbent for Hg2+ removal from wastewater.

Abstract
Veterinary antibiotics (VAs) released into the environment are a concern because of the possibility for increasing antibiotic-resistance genes. The concentrations of six VAs, chlortetracycline, oxytetracycline, tetracycline, sulfamethazine, sulfamethoxazole, and sulfathiazole, in manure-based compost, soil, and crops were measured using liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry. Mass balance analysis was conducted based on the measured antibiotic concentration, cultivation area, and amount of manure-based compost applied. The result showed that the detected mean concentration of VAs ranges was 3.52~234.19 μg/kg, 0.52~13.08 μg/kg, and 1.05~39.57 μg/kg in manure-based compost, soil, and crops, respectively, and the substance of VAs detected in different media was also varied. Mass balance analysis showed that the VAs released from the manure-based compost can remain in soil (at rates of 26% to 100%), be taken up by crops (at rates of 0.4% to 3.7%), or dissipated (at rates of 9% to 73%) during the cultivation period. Among the six VAs, chlortetracycline and oxytetracycline mainly remained in the soil, whereas sulfamethoxazole and sulfathiazole were mainly dissipated. Although we did not verify the exact mechanism of the fate and distribution of VAs in this study, our results showed that these can vary depending on the different characteristics of VAs and the soil properties.

Abstract
Nanostructures of magnesium (Mg) doped Zinc oxide (ZnO) were successfully deposited on conducting fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) coated glass plates by cathodic electrochemical deposition method at different potentials and temperature conditions. The deposited samples were characterized by XRD and SEM techniques to confirm their structures, morphologies and optical properties. These measurements show that Mg doped ZnO has a wurtzite structure and that the strongest intensity of the (002) peak is found at 60 degrees C and -1.0 V. Tunable transmittance of Mg doped ZnO has a band gap energy from 3.45 eV to 3.82 eV, which is the direct evidence of doping.

Abstract
The objective of this research was to assess the mechanism and effectiveness of the zerovalent iron (ZVI) to remediate the Cr(VI) contaminated water. The mechanism of Cr(VI) reduction by ZVI was evaluated by characterising surface properties and chemical compositions of Fe and Cr products using SEM-EDS, XRD and XPS analyses. The effectiveness of ZVI in Cr(VI) reduction was assessed by the luminescent bacteria (Photobacterium Phosphoreum). The Cr(VI) was reduced to Cr(III), when the reactive Fe(o) was oxidised to Fe(II, III), showing the presence of Fe2O3, (Fe-Cr)2O3 and FeOOH. The SEM-EDS analysis showed that ZVI with a higher reducing capacity was more subject to changes of surface and morphological properties due to ionisation of ZVI. The Cr and Fe in precipitates subsisted exclusively in the Cr(III) or Fe(III) states with the respective forms of Cr(OH)3 or Cr2O3 and FeOOH or Fe2O3. Electrons produced from ZVI oxidation reduced Cr(VI) to Cr(III), thus resultantly Cr(III) precipitated or co-precipitated with Fe(III) to form Fe(III)-Cr(III) hydroxide or Fe(III)-Cr(III) oxyhydroxide. Toxicity of water reacted with ZVI was significantly lower than that of the untreated water.

Abstract
Extragenital lichen sclerosus is most common on the neck, shoulders, and upper portion of the trunk. A 20-year-old Korean man had asymptomatic, well-demarcated, linear violaceous plaques on the left lateral chest, in a pattern corresponding to the lines of Blaschko. We describe a case with a pattern of extragenital lichen sclerosus following Blaschko's lines.

Abstract
A highly chromate-selective biosorbent with high adsorption capacity was found by examining the chromate adsorption capacities of 48 species of red, brown, or green marine algae sampled from the east coast of Korea. As a result of screening, a red marine alga showed excellent adsorption characteristics. It was identified as Pachymeniopsis sp. The timing of the sampling of Pachymeniopsis sp. did not affect the adsorption capacity of the alga but the optimum period for mass collection was April-May. The alga also showed high selectivity for chromate and its adsorption capacity for other heavy metal ions such as cadmium and manganese was relatively low. An investigation of the adsorption isotherm of Pachymeniopsis sp. as a dried powder for chromate adsorption at 25 degrees C showed Langmuir-type dependence. The maximum chromate adsorption capacity of the selected alga was about 225 mg/g. The desorption of adsorbed chromate from Pachymeniopsis sp. was done by treating samples with 1 N NaOH. It was confirmed that ion exchange type adsorption was observed with anion exchangers but not with cation exchangers. Therefore it is believed that the chromate adsorption is based on the anionic exchange of Pachymeniopsis sp.
