Abstract
BACKGROUND We aimed to analyze potentially prognostic factors which could have influence on postoperative seizure, neuropsychological and psychiatric outcome in a cohort of patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) due to hippocampal sclerosis (HS) after selective amygdalohippocampectomy (SAHE) via transsylvian approach. METHODS Clinical variables of 171 patients with drug-resistant MTLE with HS (88 females) who underwent SAHE between 1994 and 2019 were evaluated using univariable and multivariable logistic regression models, to investigate which of the explanatory parameters can best predict the outcome. RESULTS At the last available follow-up visit 12.3 ± 6.3 years after surgery 114 patients (67.9%) were seizure-free. Left hemispheric MTLE was associated with worse postoperative seizure outcome at first year after surgery (OR = 0.54, p = 0.01), female sex-with seizure recurrence at years 2 (OR = 0.52, p = 0.01) and 5 (OR = 0.53, p = 0.025) and higher number of preoperative antiseizure medication trials-with seizure recurrence at year 2 (OR = 0.77, p = 0.0064), whereas patients without history of traumatic brain injury had better postoperative seizure outcome at first year (OR = 2.08, p = 0.0091). All predictors lost their predictive value in long-term course. HS types had no prognostic influence on outcome. Patients operated on right side performed better in verbal memory compared to left (VLMT 1-5 p < 0.001, VLMT 7 p = 0.001). Depression occurred less frequently in seizure-free patients compared to non-seizure-free patients (BDI-II Z = - 2.341, p = 0.019). CONCLUSIONS SAHE gives an improved chance of achieving good postoperative seizure, psychiatric and neuropsychological outcome in patients with in MTLE due to HS. Predictors of short-term outcome don't predict long-term outcome.

Abstract
For the analysis of time-to-event data, frequently used methods such as the log-rank test or the Cox proportional hazards model are based on the proportional hazards assumption, which is often debatable. Although a wide range of parametric and non-parametric methods for non-proportional hazards has been proposed, there is no consensus on the best approaches. To close this gap, we conducted a systematic literature search to identify statistical methods and software appropriate under non-proportional hazard. Our literature search identified 907 abstracts, out of which we included 211 articles, mostly methodological ones. Review articles and applications were less frequently identified. The articles discuss effect measures, effect estimation and regression approaches, hypothesis tests, and sample size calculation approaches, which are often tailored to specific non-proportional hazard situations. Using a unified notation, we provide an overview of methods available. Furthermore, we derive some guidance from the identified articles.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES To analyse short-term changes of mean photoreceptor thickness (PRT) on the ETDRS-grid after vitrectomy and membrane peeling in patients with epiretinal membrane (ERM). SUBJECTS/METHODS Forty-eight patients with idiopathic ERM were included in this prospective study. Study examinations comprised best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) before surgery, 1 week (W1), 1 month (M1) and 3 months (M3) after surgery. Mean PRT was assessed using an automated algorithm and correlated with BCVA and central retinal thickness (CRT). RESULTS Regarding PRT changes of the study eye in comparison to baseline values, a significant decrease at W1 in the 1 mm, 3 mm and 6 mm area (all p-values < 0.001), at M1 (p = 0.009) and M3 (p = 0.019) in the central 1 mm area, a significant increase at M3 in the 6 mm area (p < 0.001), but no significant change at M1 in the 3 mm and 6 mm area and M3 in the 3 mm area (all p-values > 0.05) were observed. BCVA increased significantly from baseline to M3 (0.3LogMAR-0.15LogMAR, Snellen equivalent = 20/40-20/28 respectively; p < 0.001). There was no correlation between baseline PRT and BCVA at any visit after surgery, nor between PRT and BCVA at any visit (all p-values > 0.05). Decrease in PRT in the 1 mm (p < 0.001), 3 mm (p = 0.013) and 6 mm (p = 0.034) area after one week correlated with the increase in CRT (449.9 µm-462.2 µm). CONCLUSIONS Although the photoreceptor layer is morphologically affected by ERMs and after their surgical removal, it is not correlated to BCVA. Thus, patients with photoreceptor layer alterations due to ERM may still benefit from surgery and achieve good functional rehabilitation thereafter.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the presence and morphologic characteristics of drusenoid pigment epithelial detachments (DPEDs) in spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) in Caucasian patients with early and intermediate age-related macular degeneration (AMD) as well as the influence of these characteristics on best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and disease progression. DESIGN Prospective observational cohort study. PARTICIPANTS 89 eyes of 56 patients with early and intermediate AMD. METHODS Examinations consisted of BCVA, SD-OCT, and indocyanine green angiography. Evaluated parameters included drusen type, mean drusen height and -volume, the presence of DPED, DPED maximum height, -maximum diameter, -volume, topographic location, the rate of DPED collapse, and the development of macular neovascularization (MNV) or geographic atrophy (GA). RESULTS DPED maximum height (162.34 µm ± 75.70 μm, p = 0.019) was significantly associated with the development of GA and MNV. For each additional 100 μm in maximum height, the odds of developing any late AMD (GA or MNV) increased by 2.23 (95% CI = 1.14-4.35). The presence of DPED (44 eyes, p = 0.01), its volume (0.20 mm ± 0.20 mm, p = 0.01), maximum diameter (1860.87 μm ± 880.74 μm, p = 0.03), maximum height (p < 0.001) and topographical location in the central millimetre (p = 0.004) of the Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS)-Grid were significantly correlated with BCVA at the last follow-up (0.15logMAR ± 0.20logMAR; Snellen equivalent approximately 20/28). DPEDs occurred significantly less in the outer quadrants than in the central millimetre and inner quadrants of ETDRS-Grid (all p values < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The height of drusen and DPEDs is a biomarker that is significantly associated with the development of late AMD and visual loss. DPEDs affect predominantly the center and inner quadrants of the ETDRS-Grid.

Abstract
Extracellular vesicles (EVs) accumulate during packed red blood cell (PRBC) storage. To date, the involvement of EVs in transfusion-related immunomodulation (TRIM) has not been prospectively evaluated in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. This was a prospective subanalysis of a recent observational feasibility study in postoperative ICU patients after: (1) open aortic surgery (Aorta), (2) bilateral lung transplantation (LuTx), and (3) other types of surgery (Comparison). Patient plasma was collected three times each before and after leukoreduced PRBC transfusion at 30-min intervals. The total number of EVs and EVs derived from erythrocytes (EryEVs), total platelets (total PEVs), activated platelets, granulocytes (GEVs), monocytes, and myeloid cells in PRBC samples and patient plasma were analyzed by flow cytometry. Statistical analysis was performed by Spearman's correlation test, linear mixed models and pairwise comparisons by Wilcoxon matched-pairs test. Twenty-three patients (Aorta n = 5, LuTx n = 9, Comparison n = 9) were included in the final analysis. All EV subgroups analyzed were detectable in all PRBCs samples (n = 23), but concentrations did not correlate with storage time. Moreover, all EVs analyzed were detectable in all plasma samples (n = 138), and EV counts were consistent before transfusion. Concentrations of total EVs, EryEVs, total PEVs, and GEVs increased after transfusion compared with baseline in the entire cohort but not in specific study groups. Furthermore, the change in plasma EV counts (total EVs and EryEVs) after transfusion correlated with PRBC storage time in the entire cohort. Extracellular vesicles were detectable in all PRBC and plasma samples. Individual EV subtypes increased after transfusion in the entire cohort, and in part correlated with storage duration. Future clinical studies to investigate the role of EVs in TRIM are warranted and should anticipate a larger sample size.Trial registration: Clinicaltrials.gov: NCT03782623.

Abstract
PURPOSE Several studies have shown that SARS-CoV-2 can induce a massive release of cytokines which contributes to disease severity and mortality. Therefore, cytokine levels in the serum may help to predict disease severity and survival in COVID-19 patients. METHODS In this prospective trial, 88 patients who were hospitalised for COVID-19 were enrolled. Blood samples for serum peptide measurements were taken at the time closest to hospitalisation, at day 5, 9 and 13 (±1). The concentrations of cytokines (IL-1α, IL-1β, IL-1RA, IL-6, L-7, L-10, IFN-γ and TNF-α), chemokines (CCL-3, CCL-4 and CCL-7) and growth factors (G-CSF, GM-CSF and VEGF) were assessed and correlated with the type of ventilation, occurrence of consolidations on imaging and the level of care. RESULTS COVID-19 patients (median age 68 years, IQR 55-77) stayed in hospital between 5-171 days. Compared to patients in the general care unit, patients in the intermediate care unit (IMCU) and intensive care unit (ICU) presented significantly elevated serum IL-6 (p = 0.004) and lower IFN-γ levels (p = 0.005), respectively. The peak inspiratory pressure in ventilated patients correlated positively with IL-1RA, G-CSF and inversely with IFN-γ serum levels (all p<0.05). VEGF serum levels inversely correlated with the fraction of inspired oxygen in patients receiving high-flow nasal canula oxygen therapy (p = 0.047). No significant correlation between serum concentrations of the measured peptides and the type of ventilation, occurrence of radiological consolidations or in-hospital mortality has been observed. CONCLUSION IL1-RA, IL-6, IFN-γ, G-CSF, CCL-7 and VEGF serum levels could prove helpful as biomarkers to assess disease severity and the need for intensive care in COVID-19 patients.

Abstract
ZusammenfassungHintergrundDie diagnostische Abklärung des Ulcus cruris ist zeit‐ und kostenintensiv. Ziel dieser Studie war es, die Ulkuslokalisation als diagnostisches Kriterium zu bewerten und einen diagnostischen Algorithmus zur Unterstützung in der Diagnostik bereitzustellen.Patienten und MethodikDie Studie umfasste 277 Patienten mit Ulcera cruris. Es wurden die folgenden fünf Gruppen definiert: Ulcus cruris venosum, arterielle Ulzera, gemischte Ulzera, Arteriolosklerose und Vaskulitis. Mittels computergestütztem Oberflächenrendering wurden die Prädilektionsstellen der verschiedenen Ulkustypen bewertet. Die Ergebnisse wurden in ein multinomiales logistisches Regressionsmodell integriert, um die Wahrscheinlichkeit einer bestimmten Diagnose in Abhängigkeit von Lokalisation, Alter, bilateraler Beteiligung und Anzahl der Ulzera zu berechnen. Zusätzlich wurde eine neuronale Netzwerk‐Bildanalyse durchgeführt.ErgebnisseDie Mehrheit der venösen Ulzera fand sich in der medialen Malleolarregion. Arterielle Ulzera waren am häufigsten auf der dorsalen Seite des Vorfußes zu finden. Arteriolosklerotische Ulzera waren zumeist im mittleren Drittel des lateralen Unterschenkels lokalisiert. Vaskulitische Ulzera schienen zufällig verteilt zu sein und waren deutlich kleiner, häufiger multilokulär und bilateral. Das multinomiale logistische Regressionsmodell zeigte eine insgesamt zufriedenstellende Leistung mit einer geschätzten Genauigkeit von 0,68 bei ungesehenen Daten.SchlussfolgerungenDer vorgestellte Algorithmus auf Grundlage der Ulkuslokalisation kann als unterstützendes Instrument zur Eingrenzung potenzieller Differenzialdiagnosen und als Hilfestellung für die Einleitung diagnostischer Maßnahmen dienen.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diagnostic work-up of leg ulcers is time- and cost-intensive. This study aimed at evaluating ulcer location as a diagnostic criterium and providing a diagnostic algorithm to facilitate differential diagnosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS The study consisted of 277 patients with lower leg ulcers. The following five groups were defined: Venous leg ulcer, arterial ulcers, mixed ulcer, arteriolosclerosis, and vasculitis. Using computational surface rendering, predilection sites of different ulcer types were evaluated. The results were integrated in a multinomial logistic regression model to calculate the likelihood of a specific diagnosis depending on location, age, bilateral involvement, and ulcer count. Additionally, neural network image analysis was performed. RESULTS The majority of venous ulcers extended to the medial malleolar region. Arterial ulcers were most frequently located on the dorsal aspect of the forefoot. Arteriolosclerotic ulcers were distinctly localized at the middle third of the lower leg. Vasculitic ulcers appeared to be randomly distributed and were markedly smaller, multilocular and bilateral. The multinomial logistic regression model showed an overall satisfactory performance with an estimated accuracy of 0.68 on unseen data. CONCLUSIONS The presented algorithm based on ulcer location may serve as a basic tool to narrow down potential diagnoses and guide further diagnostic work-up.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dupilumab significantly improves symptom control in chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP). Patients with large polyps at the initiation of treatment (total polyp score (TPS) ≥ 5) have been the focus in published studies. Patients with significant burden of disease but small polyps (TPS ≤ 4) have not yet been evaluated for clinical response. This study set out to evaluate the benefit of dupilumab treatment on cohorts of small (TPS ≤ 4) compared to large polyps (TPS ≥ 5). Furthermore, benefit of concomitant oral and/or nasal steroid therapy has been evaluated. METHODS 97 patients with CRSwNP, who were begun on dupilumab between January 2020 and October 2021, were included. All patients were followed-up for 6 months. At each visit they underwent nasal endoscopy, smell identification tests and filled out validated patient questionnaires. RESULTS Significant drops in TPS were seen in both patient groups after 6 months of therapy, dropping from a median score of 3 to 0 and from 6 to 2 in patients with small and large polyps respectively. Furthermore, a linear mixed model calculated a drop of 22% and 24% in TPS per month in patients with small and large polyps respectively with no significant difference in rate of decline. Finally the model showed that neither oral nor nasal steroids influenced the rate of response to dupilumab therapy. CONCLUSIONS Polyp size at the initiation of dupilumab therapy and whether patients continue to take steroid therapy does not appear to influence effectiveness of dupilumab treatment.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Nimodipine is routinely administered to aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage patients to improve functional outcomes. Nimodipine can induce marked systemic hypotension, which might impair cerebral perfusion and brain metabolism. METHODS Twenty-seven aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage patients having multimodality neuromonitoring and oral nimodipine treatment as standard of care were included in this retrospective study. Alterations in mean arterial blood pressure (MAP), cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP), brain tissue oxygen tension (pbtO2), and brain metabolism (cerebral microdialysis), were investigated up to 120 minutes after oral administration of nimodipine (60 mg or 30 mg), using mixed linear models. RESULTS Three thousand four hundred twenty-five oral nimodipine administrations were investigated (126±59 administrations/patient). After 60 mg of oral nimodipine, there was an immediate statistically significant (but clinically irrelevant) drop in MAP (relative change, 0.97; P<0.001) and CPP (relative change: 0.97; P<0.001) compared with baseline, which lasted for the whole 120 minutes observation period (P<0.001). Subsequently, pbtO2 significantly decreased 50 minutes after administration (P=0.04) for the rest of the observation period; the maximum decrease was -0.6 mmHg after 100 minutes (P<0.001). None of the investigated cerebral metabolites (glucose, lactate, pyruvate, lactate/pyruvate ratio, glutamate, glycerol) changed after 60 mg nimodipine. Compared with 60 mg nimodipine, 30 mg induced a lower reduction in MAP (relative change, 1.01; P=0.02) and CPP (relative change, 1.01; P=0.03) but had similar effects on pbtO2 and cerebral metabolism (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS Oral nimodipine reduced MAP, which translated into a reduction in cerebral perfusion and oxygenation. However, these changes are unlikely to be clinically relevant, as the absolute changes were minimal and did not impact cerebral metabolism.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Male obesity secondary hypogonadism (MOSH) is a common disease among men with obesity and can be associated with metabolic syndrome and a variety of metabolic problems ultimately leading to androgen deficiency. Metabolic and bariatric surgery is a well-established treatment option associated with significant weight loss and reduction in metabolic co-morbidities. OBJECTIVES To evaluate the impact of surgery on plasma levels of sexual hormones and their effect on weight loss comparing 2 surgical methods (one-anastomosis gastric bypass [OAGB] and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass [RYGB]) in male patients with obesity. SETTING University hospital, Austria. METHODS Patients undergoing OAGB and RYGB between 2012 and 2017 were analyzed retrospectively. Follow-up in this study was up to 24 months. Systemic levels of sexual hormones (luteinizing hormone [LH]), follicle stimulating hormone [FSH], total testosterone [TT], sexual hormone binding globin [SHBG], 17 beta-estradiol [17bE], androstenedione [AS]) were retrieved at each visit. A linear mixed model was used to assess the correlation between changes in testosterone levels and percent excess weight loss (%EWL). RESULTS In 30.8% of all patients, MOSH was present preoperatively. A significant increase of TT was observed postoperatively that led to a complete resolution of hypogonadism within the period observed. Bioavailable testosterone (bTT) and FSH levels significantly increased each month of follow-up after surgery (all P < .01). Levels of 17bE did not change significantly after surgery. The overall change of TT, comparing preoperative and 1-year postoperative TT levels (ΔTT), significantly correlated with %EWL. Changes in TT levels were not affected by the choice of surgical method. CONCLUSIONS Serum plasma testosterone levels rise significantly after metabolic and bariatric surgery in male patients. The change of testosterone levels seems to play a role in continued weight loss after surgery. This is true irrespective of the surgical method used.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Intramedullary humeral nailing is a common and reliable procedure for the treatment of humeral shaft fractures. Radial nerve palsy is a common complication encountered in the treatment of this pathology. The radial nerve runs from posterior to anterior at the lateral aspect of the distal humerus. Hence, there is reason to believe that due to the anatomic vicinity of the radial nerve in this area, lateral-medial distal locking in intramedullary nailing of the humerus may be associated with a greater risk for iatrogenic radial nerve injury compared to anterior-posterior locking. QUESTIONS/PURPOSE To assess whether the choice of distal locking (lateral-medial versus anterior-posterior distal locking) in intramedullary humeral nailing of humeral shaft fractures affects the risk for iatrogenic radial nerve injury. PATIENTS AND METHODS Overall, 203 patients (116 females, mean age 64.3 ± 18.6 years), who underwent intramedullary nailing of the humerus between 2000 and 2020 at a single level-one trauma center, met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed in this retrospective case-control study. Patients were subdivided into two groups according to the distal locking technique. RESULTS Anterior-posterior locking was performed in 176 patients versus lateral-medial locking in 27 patients. We observed four patients with iatrogenic radial nerve palsy in both groups. Risk for iatrogenic radial nerve palsy was almost 7.5 times higher for lateral-medial locking (OR 7.48, p = 0.006). There was no statistically significant difference regarding intraoperative complications, union rates or revision surgeries between both groups. CONCLUSIONS Lateral-medial distal locking in intramedullary nailing of the humerus may be associated with a greater risk for iatrogenic radial nerve palsy than anterior-posterior locking. Hence, we advocate for anterior-posterior locking. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE Level III retrospective comparative study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diminished systemic serum butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), a biomarker for chronic inflammation, cachexia, and advanced tumor stage, has shown to play a prognostic role in various malignancies. The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic value of pretherapeutic BChE levels in patients with resectable adenocarcinoma of the gastroesophageal junction (AEG), treated with or without neoadjuvant therapy. METHODS Data of a consecutive series of patients with resectable AEG at the Department for General Surgery, Medical University of Vienna, were analyzed. Preoperative serum BChE levels were correlated to clinic-pathological parameters as well as treatment response. The prognostic impact of serum BChE levels on disease-free (DFS) and overall survival (OS) was evaluated by univariate and multivariate cox regression analysis, and Kaplan-Meier curves used for illustration. RESULTS A total of 319 patients were included in this study, with an overall mean (standard deviation, SD) pretreatment serum BChE level of 6.22 (± 1.91) IU/L. In univariate models, diminished preoperative serum BChE levels were significantly associated with shorter overall (OS, p < 0.003) and disease-free survival (DFS, p < 0.001) in patients who received neoadjuvant treatment and/or primary resection. In multivariated analysis, decreased BChE was significantly associated with shorter DFS (HR: 0.92, 95% CI: 0.84-1.00, p 0.049) and OS (HR: 0.92, 95% CI: 0.85-1.00, p < 0.49) in patients receiving neoadjuvant therapy. Backward regression identified the interaction between preoperative BChE and neoadjuvant chemotherapy as a predictive factor for DFS and OS. CONCLUSION Diminished serum BChE serves as a strong, independent, and cost-effective prognostic biomarker for worse outcome in patients with resectable AEG who had received neoadjuvant chemotherapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dynamic MELD deterioration (Delta MELD) during waiting time was shown to have significant impact on post-transplant survival. The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of MELD-Na score alterations on waiting list outcomes in liver transplant candidates. METHOD 36,806 patients listed at UNOS for liver transplantation in 2011-2015 were analyzed according to their delisting reasons. Several different MELD-Na alterations during waiting time were analyzed (e.g., maximal change, last change before delisting/transplantation). Outcome estimates were calculated according to MELD-Na scores at listing and Delta MELD. RESULTS Patients who died while on the waiting list showed a significantly higher deterioration in MELD-Na during the waiting time (6.8 ± 8.4 points) than stable patients who remained actively listed (-0.1 ± 5.2 points; p < 0.01). Patients who were considered too healthy for transplantation improved by more than 3 points on average during the waiting time. The mean peak MELD-Na alteration during the waiting time was 10.0 ± 7.6 for patients who died on the waiting list, compared to 6.6 ± 6.1 in the group of patients who finally underwent transplantation. CONCLUSIONS Deterioration of MELD-Na during waiting time and maximal MELD-Na deterioration have a significant negative impact on the liver transplant waiting list outcome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND /Objectives To compare two suturing techniques in patients undergoing upper eyelid blepharoplasty by using the FACE-Q™ Eye Module questionnaire to assess patient-reported outcomes and by blinded Likert-scale gradings of two experienced surgeons. METHODS 90 patients undergoing bilateral blepharoplasty were randomly assigned to a suturing technique (running cutaneous or subcuticular closure) using Prolene 6.0. Patients completed the FACE-Q eye module questionnaire before surgery and 7 days and 3 months after surgery. Further, two trained oculoplastic surgeons assessed the outcome. FACE-Q ratings were RASCH-transformed, and linear models were fitted for appraisal and satisfaction results. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was calculated to assess the surgeons' rating agreement. RESULTS There was no statistically significantly difference in patients' FACE-Q self-assessments regarding satisfaction with eyes and appraisal of upper eyelids between the two suturing techniques investigated, both 7 days and 3 months after blepharoplasty. The more content the patient at baseline, the less the increase in satisfaction after 3 months. There was good agreement between blinded graders in outcome assessment expressed by an ICC of 0.86. Dry-eye symptoms increased after surgery, independent of the suturing technique, patient age or sex. CONCLUSION In conclusion, this study shows that post operative patient satisfaction is independent of suturing technique, but depends on baseline FACE-Q reports. These findings are valuable in patient communication and selection and are in line with observer-based assessments. Abstract
Introduction: Eicosanoids are bioactive lipids present in packed red blood cells (PRBCs), and might play a role in transfusion-related immunomodulation (TRIM). We tested the feasibility of analyzing eicosanoid profiles in PRBC supernatant and in plasma samples of postoperative intensive care unit (ICU) patients transfused with one unit of PRBCs.Methods: We conducted a prospective, observational feasibility study enrolling postoperative ICU patients: 1) patients treated with acetylsalicylic acid following abdominal aortic surgery (Aorta); 2) patients on immunosuppressants after bilateral lung transplantation (LuTx); and 3) patients undergoing other types of major surgery (Comparison). Abundances of arachidonic acid (AA) and seven pre-defined eicosanoids were assessed by liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry. PRBC supernatant was sampled directly from the unit immediately prior to transfusion. Spearman’s correlations between eicosanoid abundance in PRBCs and storage duration were assessed. Patient plasma was collected at 30-min intervals: Three times each before and after transfusion. To investigate temporal changes in eicosanoid abundances, we fitted linear mixed models.Results: Of 128 patients screened, 21 were included in the final analysis (Aorta n = 4, LuTx n = 8, Comparison n = 9). In total, 21 PRBC and 125 plasma samples were analyzed. Except for 20-hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid (HETE), all analyzed eicosanoids were detectable in PRBCs, and their abundance positively correlated with storage duration of PRBCs. While 5-HETE, 12-HETE/8-HETE, 15-HETE, 20-HETE, and AA were detectable in virtually all plasma samples, 9-HETE and 11-HETE were detectable in only 57% and 23% of plasma samples, respectively.Conclusions: Recruitment of ICU patients into this transfusion study was challenging but feasible. Eicosanoid abundances increased in PRBC supernatants during storage. In plasma of ICU patients, eicosanoid abundances were ubiquitously detectable and showed limited fluctuations over time prior to transfusion. Taken together, larger clinical studies seem warranted and feasible to further investigate the role of PRBC-derived eicosanoids in TRIM.

Abstract
PURPOSE Previous studies have identified a link between optical coherence tomography (OCT)-derived and OCT angiography (OCTA)-based parameters in patients with neovascular AMD (nAMD); the latter may serve as direct biomarkers for macular neovascularization (MNV) activity. The aim of this study was to assess the individual influence of retinal thickness (RT) as well as intra- and sub-retinal fluid (IRF, SRF) presence on the treatment response over time as assessed by previously identified OCTA-derived MNV vascular parameters. METHODS During the first 3 months of anti-VEGF therapy patients were prospectively followed. RT, SRF and IRF were determined from SSOCT/A (PlexElite, Zeiss) images and using the semi-automated AngioTool software, vessel area (VA), total vessel length (TVL), total number of junctions (TNJ), junction density (JD), vessel density (VD) as well as MNV area were exported. IRF and SRF were identified manually on OCT volume scans .The associations between RT, IRF, and SRF and SSOCTA vascular parameters were analyzed using linear mixed models. RESULTS 31 eyes of 31 patients with treatment-naïve and OCTA-positive nAMD MNV were included in this analysis. VA, TVL, TNJ, and MNV area show a statistically significant change over time in response to anti-VEGF treatment, even after correcting for the presence of SRF, IRF, or RT (all p < 0.05). This is not the case for JD and VD (both p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS OCTA-based parameters VA, TVL, TNJ, and MNVarea show a strong response to anti-VEGF therapy over time, independent of the presence of IRF, SRF or RT. We conclude that the above listed OCTA parameters could contribute to our understanding of MNV biology and to guide individualized treatment in the future. Abstract
OBJECTIVES The identification of potential hemodynamic indicators to increase the predictive power of stroke-volume variation (SVV) for mean arterial pressure (MAP) and stroke volume (SV) fluid responsiveness. DESIGN A prospective intervention study. SETTING At a single-center university hospital. PARTICIPANTS Nineteen patients during major vascular surgery with 125 fluid interventions. INTERVENTIONS When SVV ≥13% occurred for >30 seconds, 250 mL of Ringer's lactate were given within 2 minutes. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS Hemodynamic variables, such as pulse-pressure variation (PPV) and dynamic arterial elastance (Edyn), were measured by pulse power-wave analysis. The outcomes were MAP and SV responsiveness, defined as an increase of at least 10% of MAP and SV within 5 minutes of the fluid intervention. Of the fluid interventions, 48% were MAP-responsive, and 66% were SV-responsive. The addition of PPV and Edyn cut-off values to the SVV cut-off decreased sensitivity from 1-to-0.66 to-0.82, and concomitantly increased specificity from 0-to- 0.65-to-0.93 for the prediction of MAP and SV responsiveness in the authors' study setting. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves of PPV and Edyn for the prediction of MAP responsiveness were 0.79 and 0.75, respectively. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves for PPV and Edyn to predict SV responsiveness were 0.85 and 0.77, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The PPV and Edyn showed good accuracy for the prediction of MAP and SV responsiveness in patients with elevated SVV during vascular surgery. Either PPV or Edyn may be used in conjunction with SVV to better predict MAP and SV fluid responsiveness in patients undergoing vascular surgery.

Abstract
Purpose To evaluate the effect of intravitreal aflibercept monotherapy on arterial and venous oxygen saturation, retinal vessel diameter and flicker response in patients with newly diagnosed specific subtypes of exudative maculopathy. Methods This prospective study included forty-four eyes of 44 patients with treatment-naïve polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV, n = 12), hemorrhagic choroidal neovascularization (hCNV, n = 12), pigment epithelium detachment (PED, n = 9) and type 3 MNV (RAP, n = 11). All patients received three initial aflibercept 2mg/0.05ml injections (Eylea®) in monthly intervals (loading phase) and were subsequently treated until month 12. Measurements of arterial and venous oxygen saturation, vessel diameters and flicker response were performed using the Dynamic Vessel Analyzer (DVA; IMEDOS, Jena, Germany). Statistical analysis was performed on the total population at baseline, after loading dose and at the last follow-up visit. Results The arterial oxygen saturation was 94.01±2.14% and showed no change after loading dose (93.94±2.88%, p = 0.4; estimated difference [confidence interval] -0.38 [-1.24; 0.48]) and at the last visit (95.48±1.90%; p = 0.1; -1.29 [-0.34; 2.91]). The venous oxygenation during treatment was 78.49±6.93% at baseline, 80.94±7.71% after 3-monthly injections (p = 0.7; -0.43 [-2.72; 1.86]) and 80.56±7.33% at month 12 (p = 0.5; 1.07 [-2.10; 4.24). The arterial and venous vessel diameters were 94±22μm and 131±19μm at baseline, and remained unchanged following aflibercept loading dose and at the last follow-up visit (p-value: p = 0.5; 2.30 [-5.00; 9.59] p = 0.8; 0.59 [-3.17; 4.34]). During stimulation with flicker light, arterial diameter changed by +1.24±4.93% at baseline and remained stable at month 3 (+2.70±5.95%; p = 0.5; 1.43 [-2.54; 5.41]) while the change in venous diameter during flicker stimulation was +4.52±4.45% at baseline and +4.13±3.65% after loading dose (p = 0.4, 5.18 [1.73; 8.63]). Conclusion During intravitreal aflibercept treatment oxygen saturation, vessel diameter and flicker response did not change in the total population of patients with specific subtypes of exudative maculopathy.

Abstract
Aims and Objectives Many patients with chronic obstructive lung disease suffer from emphysema. Valve implantation may be a reasonable method in patients presenting advanced emphysema and absent interlobar collateral ventilation (CV). However, other clinical parameters influencing the effectiveness of endoscopic lung volume reduction (ELVR) are not well known. Methods COPD patients with advanced emphysema who received valve implantation in 2016 were retrospectively analyzed. The following characteristics were collected prior to valve implantation: age, sex, body mass index, presence of allergies, use of inhaled corticosteroids (ICS), lung function parameters, diffusion capacity, 6-minute walk distance (6-MWD), blood gases, COHb, smoking history, and emphysema index (quantitative multi-detector computed tomography). Three months following valve implantation, lung function parameters, diffusion capacity, 6-MWD and blood gases were measured. In this analysis, we evaluated the impact of these variables on an increase in FEV1 and 6-MWT as well as a decrease in RV three months after valve implantation. Results Overall, 77 COPD patients (57% male, mean age 66, mean FEV1 32%, mean RV 259%) who underwent valve therapy were enrolled. At 3-month follow-up, patients experienced a mean FEV1 increase of 0.09 ± 0.21 L, a mean RV decrease of 0.42 ± 1.80 L and a mean improvement of 8.3 ± 57 m in the 6-MWT. Overall, ICS, sex and emphysema index had an impact on the outcome following ELVR: ICS medication was associated with inferior FEV1 outcome. The higher the emphysema index, the less the RV reduction. Sex was a predictor for change of FEV1 (%), RV (L), and 6-MWT: male patients seem to benefit less than female patients from valve implantation. Conclusion These findings suggest that ICS, emphysema index and sex are clinical parameters that may be associated with inferior outcome following ELVR. Further studies have to confirm these results to improve patient selection and clinical outcome of ELVR.

Abstract
PURPOSES Programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) testing is performed mainly on biopsy specimens in patients with advanced lung cancer. It is questionable whether the small amount of tissue analysed in biopsies may represent the true PD-L1 expression of a tumour. METHODS In this retrospective study, PD-L1 expression on tumour cells derived from bronchoscopy brush cytology, endobronchial ultrasound guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA), endobronchial biopsy, transbronchial biopsy (TBB) and computed tomography (CT)-guided transthoracic biopsy was compared to the PD-L1 expression of the corresponding surgical resection in lung cancer patients with regard to neoadjuvant treatment in-between. RESULTS A quantitative comparison between the diagnostic biopsy of the primary tumour with corresponding resected surgical specimens in a total of 113 lung cancer patients (60% male, mean age 65 ± 9 years) revealed a statistically significant correlation of PD-L1 expression on tumour cells (r = 0.58, p< 0.001), for patients without neoadjuvant treatment in-between and for patients who underwent neoadjuvant treatment (both p < 0.001). Using a cut-off value of ≥ 50% PD-L1 TPS for comparing the biopsy samples and resected specimens, the concordance rate was 78% with a Cohen's Kappa of 0.45. CONCLUSION A statistically significant concordance for PD-L1 expression on tumour cells between biopsies from primary lung tumour and resected specimen was found, but of uncertain clinical accuracy. The use of a cut-off value of ≥ 50% PD-L1 TPS resulted only in a moderate agreement. Therefore, the interpretation of the PD-L1 determined form biopsy specimens status should only be considered with caution for treatment decisionsQuery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Skeletal muscle area (SMA) in the computed tomography (CT) at the third lumbar vertebra (L3) level is a proxy for whole-body muscle mass but is only performed for clinical reasons. Ultrasound is a promising tool to determine muscle mass at the bedside. It is still unclear how well ultrasound and which ultrasound measuring points can predict CT L3 SMA. METHODS This prospective observational trial included 200 non-critically ill patients, who underwent an abdominal CT scan for any clinical reason within 48 h before the ultrasound examination. Ultrasound muscle thickness was evaluated at 3 measuring points on the thigh and 2 measuring points on the upper arm with minimal compression. On the CT scan, the entire L3 SMA was measured based on Hounsfield units. Using a model selection algorithm based on the Bayesian information criterion (BIC) and clinical considerations, a linear prediction model for CT L3 SMA based on the ultrasound muscle thickness and other independent variables was fitted and assessed with cross-validation. RESULTS 67,5% and 32,5% of the patients were from surgical and medical wards, respectively. Mean ultrasound muscle thickness values were between 2,2 and 3,6 cm on the thigh and between 1,4 and 2,8 cm on the upper arm. All ultrasound muscle thickness values were higher in men than in women (P < 0,05). CT L3 SMA was 40 cm2 higher in men than in women (P < 0,001). The final prediction model for CT L3 SMA included the following 4 independent variables: ultrasound muscle thickness at the ventral measuring point of the thigh in the short-axis plane, sex, weight, and height. It had a similar BIC (BIC of 1515) compared to larger models with 6-8 independent variables including multiple ultrasound measuring points (BIC of 1506-1519). Additional clinical considerations to choose the final model were less time consumption when measuring a single ultrasound measuring point and better anatomical overview at the short-axis plane. The final model predicted CT L3 SMA with a R2 of 0,74 (P < 0,001) and a cross-validated R2 of 0,65. CONCLUSIONS One single ultrasound measuring point at the thigh together with sex, height and weight very well predicts CT L3 SMA across different clinical populations. Ultrasound is a safe and bedside method to measure muscle thickness longitudinally to monitor the effects of nutrition and physical therapy.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To establish longitudinal reference values for cerebral ventricular size in the most vulnerable patients at risk for intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) and posthemorrhagic ventricular dilatation (PHVD). STUDY DESIGN This retrospective study included neurologically healthy preterm neonates born at 230/7-266/7 weeks of gestational age between September 2011 and April 2019. Patients were treated at 2 Austrian tertiary centers, Medical University of Vienna and Medical University of Innsbruck. All available cerebral ultrasound scans until 30 weeks corrected age were analyzed. Ventricular measurements included ventricular index, anterior horn width (AHW), and thalamo-occipital distance (TOD) and longitudinal percentiles were created. RESULTS The study cohort consisted of 244 preterm neonates, with a median gestational age of 253/7 weeks (IQR, 244/7-260/7 weeks) and a median birth weight of 735 g (IQR, 644-849 g). A total of 993 ultrasound scans were available for analysis, resulting in >1800 measurements of ventricular index, AHW, and TOD. Special attention was given to the 97th percentile as well as 2 mm and 4 mm above the 97th percentile, which are used internationally as cutoffs for intervention in the presence of PHVD. CONCLUSIONS We present percentile charts based on a cohort of extremely premature infants including neonates born at the border of viability suited to follow-up the most vulnerable patients at risk for IVH and PHVD. Furthermore, we provide an extensive literature research and comparison of all available reference values, focusing on ventricular index, AHW, and TOD.

Abstract
The number of reported coronavirus disease (COVID-19) deaths per 100,000 persons observed so far in 2020 is described in 15 European countries and the USA as dependent on age groups and sex. It is compared with the corresponding historic all-cause mortality per year depending on age and sex observed in these countries. Some common features exist although substantial differences in age and sex dependency of COVID-19 mortality were noted between countries. An exponential increase with age is a good model to describe and analyze both COVID-19 and all-cause mortality above 40 years old, where almost all COVID-19 deaths occur. Moreover, age dependency is stronger for COVID-19 mortality than for all-cause mortality, and males have an excess risk compared with women, which is less pronounced in the higher age groups. Additionally, concerning calendar time, differences in the age and sex dependency between countries were noted with the common tendency that male excess risk for COVID-19 mortality was smaller in the second half of the year.

Abstract
Clinical differential diagnosis of arteriolosclerotic ulcers of Martorell is challenging due to the lack of clearly affirmative instrument-based diagnostic criteria. The aim of this study was to develop vascular histomorphological diagnostic criteria differentiating Martorell ulcers from other types of leg ulcers. The histomorphology of patients diagnosed with arteriolosclerotic ulcers of Martorell (n = 67) was compared with that of patients with venous leg ulcers, necrotizing leukocytoclastic vasculitis, pyoderma gangrenosum, and non-ulcerative controls (n = 15 each). In a multivariable logistic regression model, the rates of arteriolar calcification (odds ratio (OR) 42.71, 95% confidence interval (CI) 7.43–443.96, p < 0.001) and subendothelial hyalinosis (OR 29.28, 95% CI 4.88–278.21, p < 0.001) were significantly higher in arteriolosclerotic ulcers of Martorell. Arteriolar cellularity was significantly lower in Martorell ulcers than in controls (OR 0.003, 95 CI < 0.001–0.97, p = 0.05). However, the wall-to-lumen ratio was similar in all ulcers (OR 0.975, 95% CI 0.598–2.04, p = 0.929). Based on the Youden index, a wall cellularity of < 0.24 cells/100 μm2 was determined as the optimum cut-off point (sensitivity 0.955, specificity 0.944). Thus, arteriolar calcification, subendothelial hyalinosis, and arteriolar cellularity revealed high discriminatory power for arteriolosclerotic ulcers of Martorell.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Intrahospital transport for CT scans is routinely performed for neurosurgical patients. Particularly in the sedated and mechanically ventilated patient, intracranial hypertension and blood pressure fluctuations that might impair cerebral perfusion are frequently observed during these interventions. This study quantifies the impact of intrahospital patient transport on multimodality monitoring measurements, with a particular focus on cerebral metabolism. METHODS Forty intrahospital transports in 20 consecutive patients suffering severe aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) under continuous intracranial pressure (ICP), brain tissue oxygen tension (pbtO2), and cerebral microdialysis monitoring were prospectively included. Changes in multimodality neuromonitoring data during intrahospital transport to the CT scanner and the subsequent 10 hours were evaluated using linear mixed models. Furthermore, the impact of risk factors at transportation, such as cerebral vasospasm, cerebral hypoxia (pbtO2 < 15 mm Hg), metabolic crisis (lactate-pyruvate ratio [LPR] > 40), and transport duration on cerebral metabolism, was analyzed. RESULTS During the transport, the mean ICP significantly increased from 7.1 ± 3.9 mm Hg to 13.5 ± 6.0 mm Hg (p < 0.001). The ICP exceeded 20 mm Hg in 92.5% of patients; pbtO2 showed a parallel rise from 23.1 ± 13.3 mm Hg to 28.5 ± 23.6 mm Hg (p = 0.02) due to an increase in the fraction of inspired oxygen during the transport. Both ICP and pbtO2 returned to baseline values thereafter. Cerebral glycerol significantly increased from 71.0 ± 54.9 µmol/L to 75.3 ± 56.0 µmol/L during the transport (p = 0.01) and remained elevated for the following 9 hours. In contrast, cerebral pyruvate and lactate levels were stable during the transport but showed a significant secondary increase 1-8 hours and 2-9 hours, respectively, thereafter (p < 0.05). However, the LPR remained stable over the entire observation period. Patients with extended transport duration (more than 25 minutes) were found to have significantly higher levels of cerebral pyruvate and lactate as well as lower glutamate concentrations in the posttransport period. CONCLUSIONS Intrahospital transport and horizontal positioning during CT scans induce immediate intracranial hypertension and an increase in cerebral glycerol, suggesting neuronal injury. Afterward, sustained impairment of neuronal metabolism for several hours could be observed, which might increase the risk of secondary ischemic events. Therefore, intrahospital transport for neuroradiological imaging should be strongly reconsidered and only indicated if the expected benefit of imaging results outweighs the risks of transportation.

Abstract
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments on subnanoliter (sub-nL) volumes are hindered by the limited sensitivity of the detector and the difficulties in positioning and holding such small samples in proximity of the detector. In this work, we report on NMR experiments on liquid and biological entities immersed in liquids having volumes down to 100 pL. These measurements are enabled by the fabrication of high spatial resolution 3D printed microfluidic structures, specifically conceived to guide and confine sub-nL samples in the sub-nL most sensitive volume of a single-chip integrated NMR probe. The microfluidic structures are fabricated using a two-photon polymerization 3D printing technique having a resolution better than 1 μm3. The high spatial resolution 3D printing approach adopted here allows to rapidly fabricate complex microfluidic structures tailored to position, hold, and feed biological samples, with a design that maximizes the NMR signals amplitude and minimizes the static magnetic field inhomogeneities. The layer separating the sample from the microcoil, crucial to exploit the volume of maximum sensitivity of the detector, has a thickness of 10 μm. To demonstrate the potential of this approach, we report NMR experiments on sub-nL intact biological entities in liquid media, specifically ova of the tardigrade Richtersius coronifer and sections of Caenorhabditis elegans nematodes. We show a sensitivity of 2.5x1013 spins/Hz1/2 on 1H nuclei at 7 T, sufficient to detect 6 pmol of 1H nuclei of endogenous compounds in active volumes down to 100 pL and in a measurement time of 3 hours. Spectral resolutions of 0.01 ppm in liquid samples and of 0.1 ppm in the investigated biological entities are also demonstrated. The obtained results may indicate a route for NMR studies at the single unit level of important biological entities having sub-nL volumes, such as living microscopic organisms and eggs of several mammalians, humans included.

Abstract
The crystal structure of cesbronite has been determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction and supported by electron-microprobe analysis, powder diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Cesbronite is orthorhombic, space group Cmcm, with a = 2.93172 (16), b = 11.8414 (6), c = 8.6047 (4) Å and V = 298.72 (3) Å3. The chemical formula of cesbronite has been revised to CuII
3TeVIO4(OH)4 from CuII
5(TeIVO3)2(OH)6·2H2O. This change has been accepted by the Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification of the International Mineralogical Association, Proposal 17-C. The previously reported oxidation state of tellurium has been shown to be incorrect; the crystal structure, bond valence studies and charge balance clearly show tellurium to be hexavalent. The crystal structure of cesbronite is formed from corrugated sheets of edge-sharing CuO6 and (Cu0.5Te0.5)O6 octahedra. The structure determined here is an average structure that has underlying ordering of Cu and Te at one of the two metal sites, designated as M, which has an occupancy Cu0.5Te0.5. This averaging probably arises from an absence of correlation between adjacent polyhedral sheets, as there are two different hydrogen-bonding configurations linking sheets that are related by a ½a offset. Randomised stacking of these two configurations results in the superposition of Cu and Te and leads to the Cu0.5Te0.5 occupancy of the M site in the average structure. Bond-valence analysis is used to choose the most probable Cu/Te ordering scheme and also to identify protonation sites (OH). The chosen ordering scheme and its associated OH sites are shown to be consistent with the revised chemical formula.

Abstract
We report on photo-current generation in freestanding monolayered gold nanoparticle membranes excited by using a focused laser beam. The absence of a substrate leads to a 50% increase of the photo-current at the surface plasmon resonance. This current is attributed to a combination of trap state dynamics and bolometric effects in a nanocomposite medium yielding a temperature rise of 40 K.

Abstract
The electro-mechanical sensing properties of freestanding monolayered membranes of dodecanethiol coated 7 nm gold nanoparticles (NPs) are investigated using AFM force spectroscopy and conductive AFM simultaneously. The electrical resistance of the NP membranes increases sensitively with the point-load force applied in the center of the membranes using an AFM tip. Numerical simulations of electronic conduction in a hexagonally close-packed two-dimensional (2D) array of NPs under point load-deformation are carried out on the basis of electronic transport measurements at low temperatures and strain modeling of the NP membranes by finite element analysis. These simulations, supporting AFM-based electro-mechanical measurements, attribute the high strain sensitivity of the monolayered NP membranes to the exponential dependence of the tunnel electron transport in 2D NP arrays on the strain-induced length variation of the interparticle junctions. This work thus evidences a new class of highly sensitive nano-electro-mechanical systems based on freestanding monolayered gold NP membranes.

Abstract
This letter reports on a novel fabrication method for 3D metal nanostructures using high-throughput nanostencil lithography. Aperture clogging, which occurs on the stencil membranes during physical vapor deposition, is leveraged to create complex topographies on the nanoscale. The precision of the 3D nanofabrication method is studied in terms of geometric parameters and material types. The versatility of the technique is demonstrated by various symmetric and chiral patterns made of Al and Au.

Abstract
The isolation of single biological cells and their further cultivation in dedicated arrayed chambers are key to the collection of statistically reliable temporal data in cell-based biological experiments. In this work, we present a hydrodynamic single cell trapping and culturing platform that facilitates cell observation and experimentation using standard bio-lab equipment. The proposed design leverages the stochastic position of the cells as they flow into the structured microfluidic channels, where hundreds of single cells are then arrayed in nanoliter chambers for simultaneous cell specific data collection. Numerical simulation tools are used to devise and implement a hydrodynamic cell trapping mechanism that is minimally detrimental to the cell cycle and retains high overall trapping efficiency (∼70%) with the capability of reaching high fill factors (>90%) in short loading times (1-4 min) in a 400-trap device. A Monte Carlo model is developed using the design parameters to estimate the system trapping efficiencies, which show strong agreement with the experimentally acquired data. As proof of concept, arrayed mammalian tissue cells (MIA PaCa-2) are cultured in the microfluidic chambers for two days without viability problems.

Abstract
We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally the possibility to achieve the strong coupling regime at room temperature with a microwave electronic oscillator coupled with an ensemble of electron spins. The coupled system shows bistable behaviour, with a broad hysteresis and sharp transitions. The coupling strength and the hysteresis width can be adjusted through the number of spins in the ensemble, the temperature, and the microwave field strength.

Abstract
Cupriavidus metallidurans, a bacterium capable of reductively precipitating toxic, aqueous gold(I/III)-complexes, dominates biofilm communities on gold (Au) grains from Australia. To examine the importance of C. metallidurans biofilms in secondary Au formation, we assessed the biomineralization potential of biofilms growing in quartz-sand-packed columns to periodic amendment with Au(I)-thiosulfate. In these experiments, >99 wt % of Au, was retained compared to <30 wt % in sterilized and abiotic controls. Biomineralization of Au occurred in the presence of viable biofilms via the formation of intra- and extra-cellular spherical nanoparticles, which aggregated into spheroidal and framboidal microparticles of up to 2 μm in diameter. Aggregates of Au formed around cells, eventually encapsulating and ultimately replacing them. These particles were morphologically analogous to Au-particles commonly observed on natural Au grains. Bacterial cells were connected via exopolymer or nanowires to μm-sized, extracellular Au-aggregates, which would intuitively improve the flow of electrons through the biofilm. This study demonstrates the importance of C. metallidurans biofilms for the detoxification of Au-complexes and demonstrates a central role for bacterial biomineralization in the formation of highly pure Au in surface environments.

Abstract
We present and characterize an organic-inorganic hybrid sol-gel material, phenyl-bridged polysilsesquioxane (ph-PSQ), for use as a new high resolution resist for electron beam lithography (EBL). The resist has a unique characteristic as the only positive tone silica-based resist available for EBL. Exploring the processing parameters has revealed that it is possible to switch the behaviour from negative to positive tone by application of a post-exposure bake (PEB). Based on the results from micro-FTIR spectroscopy, a description of the tone switching mechanisms is proposed. The negative tone behaviour is explained by the etch rate difference between silanol groups and cross-linked silica, present in unexposed and in exposed areas of the films, respectively. In the case of positive tone, after a PEB, the etch rate difference between a thermally densified cross-linked silica network and cage-like silica structures allows us to reveal the pattern. Contrast and sensitivity are estimated under different processing conditions, and the significant parameters for line edge roughness minimization are pointed out. Dense patterns down to 25 nm half-pitch and isolated structures down to 30 nm are demonstrated, exploiting the positive tone, and dense patterns down to 60 nm half-pitch are demonstrated in the negative tone. Etching selectivities in fluorinated gases for ph-PSQ nanostructures on silicon substrates are 1-9 for the positive tone and 1-12 for the negative tone.

Abstract
In this work nanocomposites based on organic-capped semiconductor nanocrystals formed of a core of CdSe coated with a shell of ZnS (CdSe@ZnS), with different sizes, and a semiconducting conjugated polymer, namely poly[(9,9-dihexylfluoren-2,7-diyl)-alt- (2,5-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene)] (PF-DMB) have been investigated. The nanocomposites are prepared by mixing the pre-synthesized components in organic solvents, thereby assisting the dispersion of the organic-coated nano-objects in the polymer host. UV-vis steady state and time-resolved spectroscopy along with (photo)electrochemical techniques have been performed to characterize the obtained materials. The study shows that the embedded nanocrystals increase the PF-DMB stability against oxidation and, at the same time, extend the light harvesting capability to the visible spectral region, thus resulting in detectable photocurrent signals. The nanocomposites have been dispensed by means of a piezo-actuated inkjet system. Such inks present viscosity and surface tension properties well suited for stable and reliable drop-on-demand printing using an inkjet printer. The fabrication of arrays of single-color pixels made of the nanocomposites and micrometers in size has been performed. Confocal and atomic force microscopy have confirmed that inkjet-printed microstructures present the intrinsic emission properties of both the embedded nanocrystals and PF-DMB, resulting in a combined luminescence. Finally, the morphology of the printed pixels is influenced by the embedded nanofillers.

Abstract
Ink-jet printing of optical ink over SU-8 pillars is here proposed as a technology for obtaining microlenses with shape control. To demonstrate the flexibility of this method, microlenses with five different contour shapes (ranging from circular and elliptical to toric or more advanced geometries) have been fabricated. Furthermore, the optical properties of the different fabricated lenses have been experimentally investigated. Focal distance, numerical aperture (NA) and full-width at half maximum (FWHM) of the microlenses have been determined. Arrays of microlenses showed an identical behavior with a standard deviation in the total intensity of only 7%. Additionally, the focal plane of the fabricated symmetric microlenses and the Sturm interval of the non-symmetric ones have been obtained. The experimental results demonstrate the validity and flexibility of the proposed technology.

Abstract
Rhodamine B and Alexa Fluor 430 fluorophores have been used as doping agents for xerogel waveguides defined over an antiresonant (ARROW) filter. This configuration has a significant level of integration, since it merges the waveguide, the light emitter and the filter in a single photonic element. Different technologies have been combined for their implementation, namely soft lithography, standard silicon-based technology and silicon bulk micromachining. The spectral response of 15-mm long waveguides without fluorophore is first analyzed as a function of the waveguide width. Here, it has been observed how the xerogel used has a high transparency in the visible spectra, having only significant absorption at the wavelength where the ARROW filter is in resonance. In a second step, identical waveguides but doped with two different concentrations of Rhodamine B and Alexa Fluor 430 are studied. In addition to the effect of the filter, fluorophore-doped xerogel waveguides show losses close to -2 dB (equivalent to 2 dB of light emission). In addition, it has been observed how an increase of the fluorophore concentration within the xerogel matrix does not provide with a emission increase, but saturation or even a decrease of this magnitude due to self-absorption. Finally, the total losses of the proposed waveguides are analyzed as a function of their width, obtaining losses close to 5 dB for waveguide widths higher than 50 µm.

Abstract
ABSTRACTThis paper presents the experimental and numerical study of hydrophobic interaction forces at nanometer scale in the scope of engineering micron-sized building blocks for self-assembly in liquid. The hydrophobic force distance relation of carbon, Teflon and dodeca-thiols immersed in degassed and deionized water has been measured by atomic force microscopy. Carbon and dodeca-thiols showed comparable attractive and binding forces in the rage of pN/nm2. Teflon showed the weakest binding and no attractive force. Molecular dynamic simulations were performed to correlate the molecular arrangement of water molecules and the hydrophobic interactions measured by atomic force microscopy. The simulations showed a depletion zone of 2Å followed by a layered region of 8Å in the axis perpendicular to the hydrophobic surface.

Abstract
Fast hydrogen sensors based on discontinuous palladium (Pd) films on supporting polyimide layers, fabricated by a cost-efficient and full-wafer compatible process, are presented. The films, deposited by electron-beam evaporation with a nominal thickness of 1.5 nm, consist of isolated Pd islands that are separated by nanoscopic gaps. On hydrogenation, the volume expansion of Pd brings initially separated islands into contact which leads to the creation of new electrical pathways through the film. The supporting polyimide layer provides both sufficient elasticity for the Pd nanoclusters to expand on hydrogenation and a sufficiently high surface energy for good adhesion of both film and contacting electrodes. The novel order of the fabrication processes involves a dicing step prior to the Pd deposition and stencil lithography for the patterning of microelectrodes. This allows us to preserve the as-deposited film properties. The devices work at room temperature, show response times of a few seconds and have a low power consumption of some tens of nW.

Abstract
A quantitative analysis of blurring and its dependence on the stencil-substrate gap and the deposition parameters in stencil lithography, a high resolution shadow mask technique, is presented. The blurring is manifested in two ways: first, the structure directly deposited on the substrate is larger than the stencil aperture due to geometrical factors, and second, a halo of material is formed surrounding the deposited structure, presumably due to surface diffusion. The blurring is studied as a function of the gap using dedicated stencils that allow a controlled variation of the gap. Our results show a linear relationship between the gap and the blurring of the directly deposited structure. In our configuration, with a material source of approximately 5 mm and a source-substrate distance of 1 m, we find that a gap size of approximately 10 microm enlarges the directly deposited structures by approximately 50 nm. The measured halo varies from 0.2 to 3 microm in width depending on the gap, the stencil aperture size and other deposition parameters. We also show that the blurring can be reduced by decreasing the nominal deposition thickness, the deposition rate and the substrate temperature.

Abstract
In this paper, we report on a process to prepare gold nanoparticle stripes on SiO(2) by convective/capillary assembly without any patterning of the substrate. Electrical devices were then fabricated using stencil lithography in order to avoid any contamination. I(V) measurements at room temperature show that these stripes have an ohmic behavior between +/- 0.5 V with a resistivity ranging from one to two orders higher than the gold bulk value. Furthermore, I(V) and I(t) measurements reveal current fluctuations that were interpreted in terms of charging and discharging of nanoparticle islands leading to a very large electrostatic perturbation of current conduction paths. Unconventional relative amplitudes of up to 99% RTS fluctuations were observed.

Abstract
Aluminum and gold nanowires were fabricated using 100 mm stencil wafers containing nanoslits fabricated with a focused ion beam. The stencils were aligned and the nanowires deposited on a substrate with predefined electrical pads. The morphology and resistivity of the wires were studied. Nanowires down to 70 nm wide and 5 mum long have been achieved showing a resistivity of 10 microOmegacm for Al and 5 microOmegacm for Au and maximum current density of approximately 10(8) A/cm(2). This proves the capability of stencil lithography for the fabrication of metallic nanowires on a full wafer scale.
