Abstract
A two-year-old castrated male Pomeranian dog was referred with the chief complaints of
coughing and subcutaneous emphysema. On physical examination, the crepitant areas were
palpable. When auscultated, the right chest was absent of respiratory sound, while the
sound of the opposite side was enhanced. Radiographs presented pneumothorax and
pneumomediastinum. On computed tomography, hypoattenuated bulla-like lesion at right
middle lung lobe and trapped air in mediastinum were shown. After patient stabilization,
surgery for excision of affected lobe was performed. During follow-up period, there were
no recurrence and complication on radiographic examination. Based on clinical and
pathological findings, the dog was diagnosed as congenital lobar emphysema.

Abstract
Tracheal ultrasonography was performed to measure the width of the tracheal ring shadow and to assess the clinical relevance of these measurements for identifying tracheal collapse. The first tracheal ring width (FTRW) and thoracic inlet tracheal ring width (TITRW) were measured on both expiration and inspiration. The mean of the FTRW width (129 dogs) was greater in expiration (10.97 ± 1.02 mm, p = 0.001) than that in inspiration (9.86 ± 1.03 mm). For 51 normal dogs, the mean of the TITRW width was greater in expiration (9.05 ± 1.52 mm, p = 0.001) than in inspiration (8.02 ± 1.43 mm). For 78 tracheal collapse dogs, the mean of the TITRW width was greater in expiration (15.89 ± 1.01 mm, p = 0.001) than in inspiration (14.85 ± 1.17 mm). The TITRW/FTRW ratio of the normal dogs was higher (p = 0.001) in expiration (0.81 ± 0.09) than that in inspiration (0.79 ± 0.10). When compared between the normal and tracheal collapse dogs, the TITRW/FTRW ratio was also increased (p = 0.001) both in expiration (1.54 ± 0.09) and inspiration (1.47 ± 0.08), respectively. Based on these results, the cutoff level of the TITRW/FTRW ratio was statistically analyzed according to the receiver operating characteristic curve and it could be set at 1.16 in expiration and at 1.13 in inspiration. We have demonstrated that tracheal ultrasonography is a useful technique for the evaluation of tracheal collapse and it can be a supportive tool together with the radiographic findings for making the correct diagnosis.

Abstract
This study was performed to radiographically examine the prevalence of aspiration sites and to evaluate their atomical correlation with the bronchial pattens. Ten healthy beagle dogs were repeatedly radiographed, at weekly intervals, in the left and right lateral, ventrodorsal (VD) and dorsoventral (DV) positions. Three mililiters of iohexol distilled with same volume of saline was infused into the tracheal inlet. Which lung lobe was aspirated was decided upon by the presence of a significant alveolar pattern due to the contrast medium. Alveolar patterns were identified at the left (100%) and right cranial lung lobes (77%) with the dogs in dependant lateral recumbency, at the right caudal lung lobe (71%) with the dogs in VD recumbency and at the right middle lung lobe (59%) with the dogs in DV recumbency, respectively. The anatomical correlation was evaluated by performing computed tomography. The right principal bronchus (165.8 ± 1.6°) was more straightly bifurcated than was the left principal bronchus (142.7 ± 1.8°, p < 0.01). In VD position, the right side lung had a greater opertunity to become aspirated. The ventrally positioned right middle lobar bronchial origin was more easily to be aspirated the other laterally positioned ones. We think that these anatomical characteristics can be one of the causes for aspiration pneumonia to occur more frequently in the right side lung.

Abstract
We have examined the effects of natural polysaccharides isolated from Phellinus gilvus (PG) in vitro and in vivo against gastric cancer. PG decreased cell proliferation and increased cell apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner in vitro. PG also led to a marked inhibition of tumor growth and significant decrease in the incidence of peritoneal carcinomatosis. Histological analysis of tumor confirmed dramatic increase in tumor cell apoptosis by PG, indicating reduced tumor cell proliferation. These data showed that polysaccharides isolated from PG significantly inhibited tumor growth and metastasis in an orthotopic model of human gastric adenocarcinoma, without detectable problematic adverse effects.

Abstract
Ultrasonographic imaging of the canine external ear canal, tympanic membrane, and tympanic bulla was described in five healthy beagle dogs before and after infusion of saline into the ear canal. Saline served as an acoustic window. With this method, the external ear canal, and tympanic bulla were visible in the same imaging plane and the integrity of the tympanic membrane could be evaluated indirectly by confirming an intact tympanic membrane, which appeared at the end of the ear canal as a hyperechoic line with reverberation. Experimentally, perforated tympanic membrane could be evaluated by identifying anechoic saline in the tympanic bulla lumen. The air and fluid-filled tympanic bulla were also visualized. Ultrasonography with saline as an acoustic window appears to be helpful for the evaluation of the external ear canal, tympanic membrane, and tympanic bulla and it may have the potential to be a useful clinical tool in evaluation of integrity of the tympanic membrane.

Abstract
The seeds of Rhynchosia volubilis (SRV) (Leguminosae) and soybean have been used in oriental folk medicine to prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis. Their beneficial effects are caused by a high content of isoflavone, which function as partial agonists or antagonists of estrogen. To compare the estrogenic effects of SRV and soybean on the MG-63 osteoblastic cell proliferation, 70% methanol extracts of SRV or soybean were treated on MG-63 cells. Although biphasic over a concentration range of 0.001 mg/ml-0.1 mg/ml, both SRV and soybean extracts increased MG-63 cell proliferation. However SRV was more effective at increasing the cell proliferation that paralleled with the greater estrogenic effects as determined by estrogen receptor alpha (ERalpha) expression, an estrogenic response element (ERE)-luciferase activity and the selective expression of insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I). SRV-induced IGF-I expression resulted from increases in the mRNA levels. Despite the increased expression of ERbeta, ERE activity and IGF-I expression by soybean were lower than those by SRV. Furthermore, the comparable estrogenic effects between SRV and the combined treatment of genistein and daidzein standards at 0.5 x 10(-8) M, which is a concentration of these two isoflavones similar to that of SRV at 0.001 mg/ml, demonstrate that the greater estrogenicity of SRV for MG-63 cell proliferation is mediated by the synergism of low levels of isoflavones for the selective expression of IGF-I.

Abstract
The effects of topical administration of polysaccharides isolated from fungus, Phellinus gilvus (PG) on the healing of rat dermal wounds were assessed. In 10 Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats, six 6 mm diameter defects were made with a punch biopsy appliance. After 24 hr, test substances were applied to the defects twice a day: 0.025, 0.25, and 2.5% polysaccharides from PG (PG0.025, 0.25, and 2.5 groups), Madecassol ointment (MC group), aqueous gel (AG group) and no treatment (control group). Six days postoperatively, the contraction and reepithelialization of the wound surface were assessed. Wound diameter was significantly reduced in all PG groups (P<0.05). Complete epithelialization and macrophages were noted in the PG0.25 group, as compared to the control group. We conclude that polysaccharides isolated from PG have significant dermal wound healing effects, and this investigation suggests the potential clinical application of PG as a wound healing agent.

Abstract
Ultrasonographic examination of both stifle joints of five clinically and radiographically normal adult dogs was performed before and after surgical transection of the cranial cruciate ligament (CrCL). At pre- and postsurgery, the hyperechoic patellar ligament and the infrapatellar fat interfered with sonographic visualization of the CrCL. When the stifle joint, however, was imaged via dynamic intra-articular saline injection, the hyperechoic ligament was visualized because of the separation of the infrapatellar fat and the CrCL and the contrasting effect of anechoic saline. When the stifle joint was imaged by real-time scanning after the transection of the CrCL, flutter of the ligament and an anechoic area between the bone and the CrCL were identified. The increased diameter of the ligament and the increased thickness of the joint space were identified as well. Ultrasonographic examination via dynamic saline injection into the joint space has potential as a diagnostic tool for assessing CrCL rupture.

Abstract
AIMS To clone and overexpress a novel levan fructotransferase gene lftA from Arthrobacter ureafaciens K2032. METHODS AND RESULTS The lftA gene, encoding a levan fructotransferase (LFTase) of 521 amino acids (aa) residues, was cloned from the genomic DNA of A. ureafaciens K2032, and overexpressed in Escherichia coli. The recombinant LFTase overexpressed in E. coli was then used to produce a difructose dianhydride (DFA IV) from levan. DFA IV crystals with 97% purity could be obtained from the reaction mixture in 83.7% yield by using a natural crystallization method. CONCLUSIONS The lftA gene cloned from A. ureafaciens K2032 encode a novel levan fructotransferase which produces difructose dianhydride (DFA IV) from levan. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY Levan fructotransferase is a useful enzyme with great promise in the production of DFA IV and various fructosides.

Abstract
This study was performed to investigate the therapeutic effect of electroacupuncture and moxibustion on abomasal displacement in dairy cattle. After acupuncture needles were inserted bilaterally into the acupoints, 'Pi yu', 'Wei yu' and 'Guan yuan yu' , electronic stimulation (5 Hz and 10 V, 20 minutes) was conducted once a day for 3 days consecutively. Modified moxa patch was also applied at the same acupoints as in acupuncture for 3 days consecutively. Ten among twelve cows with abomasal displacement were recovered by electroacupuncture and moxibustion, but two were treated with paramedian abomasopexy. It is considered that electroacupuncture and moxibustion may be convenient, safe and economical therapeutic alternatives available instead of surgical procedures on abomasal displacement in dairy cattle.

Abstract
We investigated the effects of the oral administration of Korean red ginseng (KRG) on morphologic change and function of liver in dogs. Fifteen adult mongrel dogs (n=15) were divided into three groups: a control group (40% hepatectomy, untreated), a 250 group (40% hepatectomy, 250 mg/kg of KRG, PO), and a 500 group (40% hepatectomy, 500 mg/kg of KRG, PO). The liver regeneration, histologic findings, CBC (WBC, RBC, PCV, and PLT), and liver function tests (AST, ALT, GGT, ALP, LDH, and T-bil) were examined during experiment. The liver regeneration rates were higher in treated groups than in the control group. But, there were no significant differences. All hematological values were within normal ranges except leukocyte counts for 3 days postoperatively. The levels of AST and ALT in the treated groups were significantly decreased compared to that in the control group (p<0.05). The numbers of degenerative cells and area of connective tissue were significantly decreased in the liver of the dog with KRG administration (p<0.01). On the basis of these results, we could conclude that KRG accelerate the liver regeneration and ameliorate the liver injury after hepatectomy in dogs.

Abstract
Eight diterpenes and norditerpenes including five new xenicane metabolites (4--8) have been isolated from the gorgonian Acalycigorgia inermis. The structures of these compounds have been determined by combined spectroscopic analysis. The new compounds exhibited significant cytotoxicity against a human leukemia cell-line.

Abstract
A levansucrase gene (lsrA) from Rahnella aquatilis ATCC33071 was isolated from a genomic library and the nucleotide sequence of the lsrA structural gene was determined. lsrA is composed of 1248 bp and encodes 415 amino acid residues with a calculated molecular mass of 45.9 kDa. Although the amino acid sequence of lsrA gene showed good conservation with the sequences of reported levansucrases and of the conserved regions thought to be implicated in the enzyme activity, comparison of the deduced amino acid sequences certified the dissimilarity of the proteins from Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. The lsrA gene was expressed from its own promoter in Escherichia coli in an active form. The lsrA expression in E. coli-pRL1CPR was affected by the growth phase of cells: it was repressed in the early phase of growth, but was significantly stimulated during the entrance of cells into the late phase of growth. The growth-phase-dependent fashion of lsrA expression was altered in a constitutive-like fashion by the deletion of an upstream region of lsrA (pNd137), suggesting that the growth-phase dependent expression of lsrA was mediated by the deleted upstream region.

Abstract
Zymomonas mobilis levansucrase was overproduced by the fed-batch culture of recombinant Escherichia coli harboring a novel expression system that is constitutively expressed by the promoter from the Rahnella aquatilis levansucrase gene. Most of the levansucrase was produced as inclusion bodies in the bacterial cytoplasm, accounting for approximately 20% of the total cellular protein. Refolding after complete denaturation by high concentrations of urea or guanidine hydrochloride was not successful, resulting in large amounts of insoluble aggregates. During the development of the refolding method, it was found that direct solubilization of the inclusion bodies with Triton X-100 reactivated the enzyme, with a considerable refolding efficiency. About 65% of inclusion body levansucrase was refolded into active levansucrase in the renaturation buffer containing 4% (v/v) Triton X-100. The in vitro refolded enzyme was purified to 95% purity by single-step DEAE-Sepharose ion exchange chromatography. Triton X-100 was removed by this ion exchange chromatography.

Abstract
Plasmid DNA (pCSL17) isolated from Corynebacterium glutamicum transformed recipient McrBC+ strains of Escherichia coli with lower efficiency than McrBC- strains, confirming a previous report by Tauch et al. (FEMS Microbiol. Lett. 123 (1994) 343-348) which inferred that C. glutamicum DNA contains methylcytidine. Analysis of nucleotides in C. glutamicum-derived chromosomal and plasmid DNA failed to detect significant levels of methylated adenosine, but methylated cytidine was readily detected. Restriction enzymes which are inhibited by the presence of methylcytidine in their recognition sequence failed to cut pCSL17 from C. glutamicum, whereas enzymes which require methylation at adenosine in GATC sequences failed to cut. Failure of HaeIII to cut two specific sites of C. glutamicum-derived pCSL17 identified the first cytidine in the sequence GGCCGC as one target of methylation in this species, which contains the methyltransferase recognition sequence. Although Brevibacterium lactofermentum-derived DNA showed a similar methylation pattern by HPLC analysis, HaeIII cleaved these GGCCGC sites, suggesting differences in the specificity of methylation between these two species. Results for all analyses of B. flavum DNA were identical to those for C. glutamicum.
