Abstract
BACKGROUND Elevated depression symptoms have been associated with higher insulin resistance in adolescents, and consequently, greater risk for type 2 diabetes (T2D). Mindfulness-based intervention (MBI) may be suited for adolescents at risk for T2D given its potential to decrease depression and improve stress-related behavior/physiology underpinning insulin resistance. To prepare for a future multisite efficacy randomized controlled trial, a rigorous, multisite, pilot and feasibility study is needed to test this approach. The current paper describes the design and protocol for a multisite, pilot and feasibility randomized controlled trial of six-week MBI, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and health education (HealthEd) group interventions, to assess multisite fidelity, feasibility, and acceptability. METHODS Participants are N = 120 adolescents ages 12-17, with body mass index (BMI) ≥85th percentile, elevated depression symptoms (20-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale total score > 20), and family history of diabetes. Enrollment occurs across four United States (US) sites, two in Colorado, one in Washington, D·C., and one in Maryland. Group interventions are delivered virtually by trained psychologists and co-facilitators. Assessments occur at baseline, six-week follow-up, and one-year follow-up. RESULTS Primary outcomes are intervention implementation fidelity, based upon expert ratings of audio-recorded sessions (≥80% adherence/competence), and recruitment feasibility, based upon percentage enrollment of eligible youth (≥80%). Secondary outcomes are intervention training fidelity/feasibility/acceptability, recruitment timeframe, and retention/assessment feasibility. CONCLUSION Findings will inform optimization of training, recruitment, intervention delivery, retention, and assessment protocols for a multisite, efficacy randomized controlled trial evaluating MBI for decreasing depression and improving insulin resistance in adolescents at risk for developing T2D.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) has been proposed for prevention of excess weight gain among adolescents with loss-of-control (LOC) eating. Mixed findings from a trial testing this conjecture warrant elucidation of potential outcome predictors. The therapeutic alliance (adolescent-facilitator emotional bond and task collaboration) may be important for IPT but has received little attention in weight-related interventions. This study evaluated associations of adolescent-reported therapeutic alliance during IPT with weight- and eating-related outcomes. METHODS Secondary analyses of a randomized controlled trial were conducted to compare group IPT to health education (HE) for preventing excess weight gain among 113 girls (ages 12-17) with body mass index (BMI) at the 75th to 97th percentile and LOC eating. BMI and LOC eating were measured at baseline, 12 weeks (postintervention), and 1 year. Multilevel modeling was used to test associations between change in therapeutic alliance (from session 1 to session 12) and changes in weight- and eating-related outcomes (from postintervention to 1 year). Analyses were controlled for therapeutic alliance after session 1 and for baseline and postintervention outcome values; group assignment (IPT vs. HE) was a moderator. RESULTS Increases in emotional bond were associated with decreased weight and with greater decreases in number of LOC eating episodes at 1 year in the IPT group (p<0.05) and with weight gain in the HE group (p<0.05). Greater task collaboration was related to greater weight gain at 1-year follow-up, regardless of group assignment (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS The association of therapeutic alliance during IPT with weight and LOC eating outcomes among adolescent girls merits further investigation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Among adolescents, disinhibited eating and anxiety commonly co-occur. Precision intervention approaches targeting unique mechanistic vulnerabilities that contribute to disinhibited eating and anxiety may therefore be helpful. However, the effectiveness of such interventions hinges on knowledge of between- and within-person associations related to disinhibited eating, anxiety, and related processes. METHOD A sample of 39 adolescent females (12-17 years) with elevated anxiety and above-average weight (BMI %ile ≥ 75th) completed measures of theoretically driven social and cognitive-behavioral variables, disinhibited eating, and anxiety via ecological momentary assessment over 7 days. Data were analyzed using mixed-effects models. RESULTS Between-person differences in social stressors were linked to emotional eating, eating in the absence of hunger, and anxiety, whereas between-person differences in negative thoughts were associated with all disinhibited eating variables and anxiety. Between-person differences in avoidance were not related to any outcome. Additionally, between-person differences in social stressors and negative thoughts-as well as within-person deviations (from person-average levels) of social stressors, negative thoughts, and avoidance-were associated with anxiety. In turn, between-person differences in anxiety predicted eating in the absence of hunger and emotional eating, and within-person deviations in anxiety were associated with emotional eating at any given time point. DISCUSSION Findings support elements of both the interpersonal and cognitive-behavioral models of disinhibited eating. Differential trigger effects on anxiety, both at the between- and within-person levels, and significant associations between anxiety and all eating-related outcomes, highlight the potential utility of interventions targeting individual differences in sensitivity to anxiety triggers. PUBLIC SIGNIFICANCE Findings provide support for the interpersonal and cognitive-behavioral models of disinhibited eating, highlighting anxiety as a salient vulnerability and potential mechanistic factor underlying disinhibited eating. Social, cognitive, and behavioral variables were differentially related to anxiety across participants, suggesting potential for future intervention tailoring and intervention selection based on adolescents' sensitivity to anxiety as a trigger for disinhibited eating behavior.

Abstract
Loss of control (LOC)-eating, excess weight, and anxiety are robustly linked, and are independently associated with markers of poorer cardiometabolic health, including hypertension. However, no study has examined whether frequency of LOC-eating episodes among youth with anxiety symptoms and elevated weight status may confer increased risk for hypertension. We examined the relationship between LOC-eating frequency and blood pressure among 39 adolescent girls (14.9 ± 1.8 years; body mass index [BMI] = 29.9 ± 5.6; 61.5 % White; 20.5 % African American/Black; 5 % Multiple Races; 2.5 % Asian; 12.8 % Hispanic/Latino; 30.8 % with reported LOC-eating) with elevated anxiety and above average BMI who enrolled in a clinical trial aimed at preventing excess weight gain. LOC-eating over the past three months was assessed via clinical interview, and blood pressure (systolic and diastolic) was measured with an automatic blood pressure monitor. Adjusting for age, fat mass, and height, LOC-eating episode frequency was significantly, positively associated with diastolic blood pressure (β = 0.38, p = 0.02), but not with systolic blood pressure (β = 0.13, p = 0.41). Replication studies, with larger sample sizes, participants of varying weight-strata, and prospective data are required to elucidate the relationship between LOC-eating and cardiovascular functioning in youth with elevated anxiety.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adolescent-onset type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a major public health concern of growing proportions. Prevention, therefore, is critical. Unfortunately, standard-of-care treatment for T2D prevention (e.g., exercise training) show insufficient effectiveness and do not address key modifiable barriers (e.g., depression symptoms) to exercise engagement. Depression symptoms are associated with both poorer physical fitness and greater insulin resistance, the key risk factor in adolescent-onset T2D. Thus, a targeted prevention approach that addresses depression symptoms in combination with exercise training may offer a novel approach to mitigating T2D risk. METHODS This manuscript describes the design and study protocol for a multi-site, four-arm randomized controlled trial comparing the efficacy of group cognitive-behavioral therapy, group exercise training, and their combinations for the targeted prevention of worsening insulin resistance in N = 300 adolescent females at-risk for T2D with BMI ≥85th percentile and elevated depression symptoms. All four intervention arms will run in parallel and meet weekly for 1 h per week for 6-week to 6-week segments (12 weeks total). Outcomes are assessed at baseline, 6-week mid-treatment, 12-week follow-up, and 1-year follow-up. RESULTS The primary outcome is insulin resistance. Key secondary outcomes include insulin sensitivity, cardiorespiratory fitness, physical activity, depression symptoms, and body measurements. CONCLUSION Study findings will guide the ideal sequencing of two brief T2D prevention interventions for ameliorating the course of insulin resistance and lessening T2D risk in vulnerable adolescents. These interventions will likely be cost-effective and scalable for dissemination, having the potential for significant public health impact on communities at risk for T2D.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Attentional bias to threat has been implicated as a cognitive mechanism in anxiety disorders for youth. Yet, prior studies documenting this bias have largely relied on a method with questionable reliability (i.e. dot-probe task) and small samples, few of which included adolescents. The current study sought to address such limitations by examining relations between anxiety - both clinically diagnosed and dimensionally rated - and attentional bias to threat. METHODS The study included a community sample of adolescents and employed eye-tracking methodology intended to capture possible biases across the full range of both automatic (i.e. vigilance bias) and controlled attentional processes (i.e. avoidance bias, maintenance bias). We examined both dimensional anxiety (across the full sample; n = 215) and categorical anxiety in a subset case-control analysis (n = 100) as predictors of biases. RESULTS Findings indicated that participants with an anxiety disorder oriented more slowly to angry faces than matched controls. Results did not suggest a greater likelihood of initial orienting to angry faces among our participants with anxiety disorders or those with higher dimensional ratings of anxiety. Greater anxiety severity was associated with greater dwell time to neutral faces. CONCLUSIONS This is the largest study to date examining eye-tracking metrics of attention to threat among healthy and anxious youth. Findings did not support the notion that anxiety is characterized by heightened vigilance or avoidance/maintenance of attention to threat. All effects detected were extremely small. Links between attention to threat and anxiety among adolescents may be subtle and highly dependent on experimental task dimensions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Depression in adolescence is linked to risk for type 2 diabetes (T2D). In this secondary data analysis of a randomized controlled trial comparing cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to a control program to ameliorate insulin resistance via reducing depression symptoms, we examine which CBT change mechanisms (e.g., behavioral activation, cognitive restructuring) contributed to decreased depression and subsequent improvements in body mass index (BMI), percent body fat, and insulin resistance. METHODS Girls 12-17y with overweight/obesity and family history of T2D were randomized to six-week group CBT (n = 61) or health education (HealthEd; n = 58). At baseline and post-treatment, adolescents completed questionnaires assessing activities, thoughts, and depression symptoms. At baseline, post-treatment, and one-year, BMI was calculated and insulin outcomes were derived from two-hour oral glucose tolerance testing. At baseline and one-year, percent body fat was assessed with dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. Indirect effects of CBT components were tested on one-year changes in BMI, percent body fat, and insulin indices through decreases in depression symptoms during treatment. Intervention was tested as a moderator. RESULTS In CBT, but not HealthEd, there was an indirect effect of increased physical activity during treatment on decreased one-year BMI via reductions in depression symptoms during treatment. Also, there were conditional indirect effects in CBT of increased pleasantness of physical and social activity during treatment on decreased one-year BMI via decreased depression symptoms during treatment. CONCLUSION Behavioral activation may be a useful intervention to decrease depression and reduce excess weight gain in the targeted prevention of T2D in at-risk adolescent girls. Sleep Moderates Improvements in Mental Health Outcomes in Youth: Building Resilience for Healthy Kids. Am J Health Promot 2022; 36:772-780. Abstract
PURPOSE To examine the role of sleep in a school-based resiliency intervention. DESIGN Single group feasibility study. SETTING Urban middle school Subjects: Sixth grade students Intervention: A total of 285, 11-12-year-old students (70% White, 18% Hispanic, 55% female) participated in the six-week 1:1 Healthy Kids intervention. Youth (n=248) completed electronic surveys at pre-post the 6-week study assessing mental health parameters and self-reported bed and wake time. MEASURES Students were categorized as having insufficient sleep opportunity if they reported time in bed of <9 hours per night. ANALYSIS General linear models examined differences between groups for each mental health parameters pre-post study. RESULTS A third of participants (28%) were classified as having insufficient sleep opportunity. Youth with insufficient sleep were more often Hispanic (27% vs 16%; p<0.001) and were more often classified with both mild to severe depression and anxiety symptoms (55% vs 35%; p=0.004). The health coaching intervention was found to have a significant improvement on overall resilience and self-efficacy only among students who reported sufficient sleep, while no significant intervention effect was found for those students who reported insufficient sleep. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that youth with poor sleep health may not benefit from school-based resiliency interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mindfulness-based intervention (MBI) may offer a novel means of preventing excess weight gain in adolescents, theoretically by decreasing stress-eating through altering executive functioning (EF) and food-reward sensitivity. METHODS N = 54 12-17y girls and boys at-risk for excess weight gain (i.e., BMI ≥70th percentile or two biological parents with reported obesity [BMI ≥30 kg/m2]) participated in a 1.5-year follow-up of a pilot randomized controlled trial comparing 6-week/6-session MBI (n = 29) and a health education (HE) control (n = 25). Laboratory stress-eating, food-reward sensitivity, EF, perceived stress, and BMI/adiposity were re-assessed at 1.5-years with validated measures. Changes from baseline to 1.5-year follow-up were explored with ANCOVA, accounting for the respective baseline outcome, age, and sex. RESULTS Compared to MBI (M = -21, SE = 59), HE had greater increases in stress-eating from baseline to 1.5-years (M = 194, SE = 63, Cohen's d = 0.59, p = .01). There were no other between-condition differences. DISCUSSION MBI may prevent worsening stress-eating for adolescents at-risk for excess weight gain. The potential for MBI as an intervention for stress-eating and ultimately, weight stabilization warrants testing in an adequately-powered trial.

Abstract
Sleep difficulties may be one explanatory factor in the association between depression and insulin resistance; yet, explicit tests of this hypothesis are lacking. We determined if there was an indirect effect of depression symptoms on insulin resistance through sleep duration in adolescents at risk for excess weight gain. We also investigated whether dispositional mindfulness moderated the interconnections among depression, sleep, and insulin resistance. Ninety adolescents (14.2 ± 1.6y; 50% female) at risk for excess weight gain (body mass index [BMI, kg/m2] z score 1.6 ± 0.6) participated in the cross-sectional, baseline phase of a health behaviors study. Depression was assessed with the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale, sleep duration with the Sleep Habits Survey, and mindfulness with the Mindful Attention and Awareness Scale. Homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance was determined from fasting insulin and glucose. The product-of-coefficients method was used to test the indirect effect of depression on insulin resistance through sleep duration, accounting for age, sex, BMIz, puberty, and socioeconomic status (SES). Dispositional mindfulness was tested as a moderator of the associations among depression, sleep, and insulin resistance. There was a significant indirect effect of depression on insulin resistance through sleep duration, controlling for age, sex, BMIz, puberty, and SES, 95%CI [0.001, 0.05]. Dispositional mindfulness moderated the association between sleep duration and insulin resistance, such that lower sleep duration related to greater insulin resistance only among adolescents with lower mindfulness (p < .001). Short sleep may be one explanatory factor in the depression-insulin resistance connection in adolescents at risk for excess weight gain. Adolescents with poorer mindfulness and short sleep are at highest risk for insulin resistance, whereas higher mindfulness may be protective.

Abstract
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) heighten the risk for adult obesity and cardiometabolic disease, but physiological factors underlying this connection are not well understood. We determined if ACEs were associated with physiological stress response and insulin resistance in adolescents at risk for adult obesity. Participants were 90 adolescents 12.0-17.5 years (50% female, 30% Hispanic/Latinx), at risk for adult obesity by virtue of above-average body mass index (BMI; kg/m2 ≥ 70th percentile) or parental obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2 ). ACEs were determined as presence (vs. absence) based upon the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Aged Children. Physiological stress response was measured as heart rate/blood pressure response to the Trier Social Stress Test. Homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance was determined from fasting glucose/insulin. Sixty-one percent of adolescents reported positive ACE history. The presence of ACEs predicted greater heart rate (p < .001) and diastolic blood pressure (p = .02) response to stress, controlling for age, sex, race/ethnicity, puberty, and BMI standard score. Systolic blood pressure and insulin resistance did not differ by ACE history (p-values > .08). Findings suggest heightened sympathetic stress response in adolescence could be explanatory in how ACEs increase the risk for later cardiometabolic disease. Future studies should characterize ACEs in relationship to day-to-day variations in adolescents' stress physiology and glucose homeostasis.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The current review summarizes extant knowledge regarding the prevalence of depression in youth-onset type 2 diabetes (T2D) and how depression might impact glycemic control through stress-related behavioral and physiological mechanisms. The current review also discusses depression intervention studies in adult-onset T2D, as there are no such studies in youth-onset T2D, and provides recommendations for clinical research. RECENT FINDINGS The prevalence of elevated depression symptoms in youth-onset T2D is approximately 20%. Some studies suggest depression may negatively impact glycemic control through inadequate medication adherence and disordered eating, but there is a dearth of studies investigating associations with depression and physical activity/sedentary time, sleep, and stress-related physiological mechanisms. In adult-onset T2D, evidence-based behavioral interventions tailored to address diabetes-related issues have shown positive effects for depression and glycemic control. Future research is needed to characterize the epidemiology of depression in youth-onset T2D and test interventions to improve depression, glycemic control, and health outcomes in this specific pediatric population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common reproductive/metabolic condition associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes (T2D) and depression in adult women. Depression in adults is related to PCOS dermatologic manifestations. Adolescents with obesity with or without T2D have elevated depression symptoms, but data from youth with PCOS and obesity with/without T2D are limited. METHODS Our study included girls, aged 11 to 17 years, with obesity and PCOS, PCOS+T2D or T2D, who were newly seen in an obesity complications clinic after March 2016. All participants had Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression (CES-D, 20 items) scores obtained within 6 months of PCOS or T2D diagnosis. Data on history of psychiatric diagnosis and treatment, metabolic syndrome and severity of acne and hirsutism were collected through chart review. RESULTS One hundred five girls (47 with PCOS, 14 with PCOS+T2D, 44 with T2D) had similar age (15±1.8 years) and body mass index z scores (2.2±0.4). CES-D scores ≥16, indicating elevated depression symptoms, and CES-D scores ≥24, indicating severe depression symptoms, were observed in 60% and 30% of girls with PCOS, 78% and 71% of those with PCOS+T2D and 39% and 21% of those with T2D, respectively (p<0.0001 for both cutpoints). A higher CES-D score was not associated with severity of hirsutism or acne (p>0.05 for both). CONCLUSIONS Adolescents with PCOS and obesity have higher rates of elevated depression symptoms compared with girls with T2D, which is not related to worse dermatologic symptoms. Because depression may impact both PCOS and T2D management and adherence to therapy, greater efforts should be made to screen for and address mental health in adolescents with PCOS and obesity, especially if T2D is present.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Depression is linked to excess weight, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes (T2D). We previously reported that in adolescent girls at-risk for T2D with moderately elevated depression, randomization to cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) produced greater decreases in depression at post-treament and greater decreases in fasting/2-h insulin at 1 year, compared to health education (HE). The current study is a secondary analysis of this parallel-group randomized controlled trial. We examined whether decreasing depression explained intervention effects on body composition and insulin outcomes. We hypothesized that decreases in depression would be an explanatory mediator and that indirect effects would be strongest at higher levels of baseline depression. METHODS Participants were 12-17 years girls with overweight/obesity and family history of T2D randomized to 6-week group CBT (n = 58) or HE (n = 61). Procedures took place at an outpatient pediatric clinic. At baseline, post-treatment, and 1 year, adolescents completed the Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression Scale to assess depression symptoms; body mass index (BMI [kg/m2]) was measured from height/fasting weight; insulin resistance was derived from 2-h oral glucose testing. Adiposity was assessed with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry at baseline and 1 year. Indirect effects of intervention were tested on 1-year changes in BMI, adiposity, and insulin through decreases in depression. Baseline depression was tested as a moderator of mediation. RESULTS There was an indirect effect of CBT on decreased 1-year fasting insulin via decreases in depression during treatment, among adolescents with more elevated baseline depression. CONCLUSIONS Decreasing elevated depression may be one mechanism in the targeted prevention of T2D in at-risk adolescents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Excess gestational weight gain (GWG) in pregnant adolescents is a major public health concern. Excess GWG increases risk of pregnancy complications as well as postpartum and offspring obesity and cardiometabolic disease. Prevention interventions for pregnant adults that target lifestyle modification (i.e., healthy eating/physical activity) show insufficient effectiveness. Pregnant adolescents have distinct social-emotional needs, which may contribute to excess GWG. From an interpersonal theoretical framework, conflict and low social support increase negative emotions, which in turn promote excess GWG through mechanisms such as overeating and physical inactivity. METHODS The current manuscript describes the design of a pilot randomized controlled feasibility trial of adolescent interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) to address social-emotional needs and prevent excess GWG. Up to 50 pregnant, healthy adolescents 13-19y, 12-18 weeks gestation are recruited from an interdisciplinary adolescent maternity hospital clinic and randomized to IPT + usual care or usual care alone. IPT involves 6 individual 60-minute sessions delivered by a trained behavioral health clinician during 12-30 weeks gestation. Sessions include relationship psychoeducation, emotion identification and expression, and teaching/role-playing communication skills. Between sessions, adolescents are instructed to complete a daily journal and to have conversations to work on relationship goals. Outcomes are assessed at baseline, mid-program, post-program, and 3-months postpartum. Primary outcomes are feasibility and acceptability based upon rate of recruitment, session attendance, program acceptability ratings, and follow-up retention. Secondary outcomes are perinatal social functioning, stress, depression, and eating behaviors assessed with validated surveys and interviews; perinatal physical activity and sleep measured via accelerometer; GWG from measured weights; and at 3-months postpartum only, maternal adiposity by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry, maternal insulin sensitivity derived from 2-hour oral glucose tolerance testing, and infant adiposity by air displacement plethysmography. DISCUSSION This pilot trial will address a key gap in extant understanding of excess GWG prevention for a high-risk population of adolescents. If feasible and acceptable, brief psychotherapy to address social-emotional needs should be tested for its effectiveness to address excess GWG and postpartum maternal/infant health. If effective, such an approach has potential to interrupt an adverse, intergenerational cycle of social-emotional distress, obesity, and cardiometabolic disease among young mothers and their offspring. Abstract
Theories of temperament suggest that individual differences in affective reactivity (e.g., negative affectivity) may confer risk for internalizing psychopathology in youth and that self-regulatory aspects of temperament (e.g., effortful control) may protect against the deleterious effects of high negative affective reactivity. However, no study to date has examined how the relationship between temperament and youth internalizing psychopathology may be moderated by stress. The current study used a prospective longitudinal design to test the interaction of temperament (e.g., negative affectivity and effortful control) and stressors as a predictor of youth (ages 7-16; 56 % female; N = 576) depressive and anxious symptoms over a 3-month period. Findings show that at low levels of stress, high levels of effortful control protect against the development of depressive and anxious symptoms among youth with high levels of negative affectivity. However, at high levels of stress, this buffering effect is not observed. Gender and grade did not moderate this relationship. Overall, findings extend current understanding of how the interaction of individual psychosocial vulnerabilities and environmental factors may confer increased or decreased risk for depressive and anxious symptoms.

Abstract
Depression is a debilitating mental illness with clear developmental patterns from childhood through late adolescence. Here, we present data from the Gene Environment Mood (GEM) study, which used an accelerated longitudinal cohort design with youth (N = 665) starting in 3rd, 6th, and 9th grades, and a caretaker, who were recruited from the general community, and were then assessed repeatedly through semistructured diagnostic interviews every 6 months over 3 years (7 waves of data) to establish and then predict trajectories of depression from age 8 to 18. First, we demonstrated that overall prevalence rates of depression over time, by age, gender, and pubertal status, in the GEM study closely match those trajectories previously obtained in past developmental epidemiological research. Second, we tested whether a genetic vulnerability-stress model involving 5-HTTLPR and chronic peer stress was moderated by developmental factors. Results showed that older aged adolescents with SS/SL genotype, who experienced higher peer chronic stress over 3 years, were the most likely to be diagnosed with a depressive episode over time. Girls experiencing greater peer chronic stress were the most likely to develop depression. This study used repeated assessments of diagnostic interviewing in a moderately large sample of youth over 3 years to show that depression rates increase in middle to late adolescence, or postpubertally, and that the gender difference in depression emerges earlier in adolescence (age 12.5), or postpubertally. Additionally, genetically susceptible older adolescents who experience chronic peer stress were the most likely to become depressed over time.

Abstract
Temperament is associated with important outcomes in adolescence, including academic and interpersonal functioning and psychopathology. Rothbart's temperament model is among the most well-studied and supported approaches to adolescent temperament, and contains 3 main components: positive emotionality (PE), negative emotionality (NE), and effortful control (EC). However, the latent factor structure of Rothbart's temperament measure for adolescents, the Early Adolescent Temperament Questionnaire Revised (EATQ-R; Ellis & Rothbart, 2001) has not been definitively established. To address this problem and investigate links between adolescent temperament and functioning, we used confirmatory factor analysis to examine the latent constructs of the EATQ-R in a large combined sample. For EC and NE, bifactor models consisting of a common factor plus specific factors for some subfacets of each component fit best, providing a more nuanced understanding of these temperament dimensions. The nature of the PE construct in the EATQ-R is less clear. Models replicated in a hold-out dataset. The common components of high NE and low EC where broadly associated with increased psychopathology symptoms, and poor interpersonal and school functioning, while specific components of NE were further associated with corresponding specific components of psychopathology. Further questioning the construct validity of PE as measured by the EATQ-R, PE factors did not correlate with construct validity measures in a way consistent with theories of PE. Bringing consistency to the way the EATQ-R is modeled and using purer latent variables has the potential to advance the field in understanding links between dimensions of temperament and important outcomes of adolescent development.

Abstract
Theories of affective learning suggest that early experiences contribute to emotional disorders by influencing the development of processing biases for negative emotional stimuli. Although studies have shown that physically abused children preferentially attend to angry faces, it is unclear whether youth exposed to more typical aspects of negative parenting exhibit the same type of bias. The current studies extend previous research by linking observed negative parenting styles (e.g., authoritarian) and behaviors (e.g., criticism and negative affect) to attention bias for angry faces in both a psychiatrically enriched (ages 11-17 years; N = 60) and a general community (ages 9-15 years; N = 75) sample of youth. In addition, the association between observed negative parenting (e.g., authoritarian style and negative affect) and youth social anxiety was mediated by attention bias for angry faces in the general community sample. Overall, findings provide preliminary support for theories of affective learning and risk for psychopathology among youth.

Abstract
Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is defined as intentionally causing bodily harm to oneself without the intent to kill oneself. Recently, there has been an increase in research aimed at understanding why individuals, especially youth and young adults, engage in NSSI. This chapter explores the emergence and maintenance of NSSI from a developmental perspective. Epidemiological research suggests that rates of NSSI increase dramatically from early adolescence to young adulthood. No study has investigated NSSI in youth younger than age 10. Current understanding of how emotion and cognitions as well as interpersonal processes play a role in the emergence and maintenance of NSSI is explored. Further, the role of biology (e.g., neurological underpinnings, genetic associations, HPA-axis functioning) on NSSI is explored. Throughout the chapter, particular limitations (e.g., sample selection, measurement issues) in the extant corpus of knowledge are highlighted. Finally, we consider future research directions that may inform developmentally sensitive understanding of the proximal and distal risk factors that may affect the emergence and maintenance of NSSI across the life span.
