An examination of retracted articles in nursing literature

INTRODUCTION

The output of scholarly publications in scientific literature has increased exponentially in recent years. This increase in literature has been accompanied by an increase in retractions. Although some of these may be attributed to publishing errors, many are the result of unsavory research practices. The purposes of this study were to identify the number of retracted articles in nursing and reasons for the retractions, analyze the retraction notices, and determine the length of time for an article in nursing to be retracted.

DESIGN

This was an exploratory study.

METHODS

A search of PubMed/MEDLINE, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, and Retraction Watch databases was conducted to identify retracted articles in nursing and their retraction notices.

RESULTS

Between 1997 and 2022, 123 articles published in the nursing literature were retracted. Ten different reasons for retraction were used to categorize these articles with one-third of the retractions (n = 37, 30.1%) not specifying a reason. Sixty-eight percent (n = 77) were retracted because of an actual or a potential ethical concern: duplicate publication, data issues, plagiarism, authorship issues, and copyright.

CONCLUSION

Nurses rely on nursing-specific scholarly literature as evidence for clinical decisions. The findings demonstrated that retractions are increasing within published nursing literature. In addition, it was evident that retraction notices do not prevent previously published work from being cited. This study addressed a gap in knowledge about article retractions specific to nursing.

Bibliometric analysis of nursing education reviews

BACKGROUND

While the number of reviews of nursing education research has increased over the years, bibliometric studies about these reviews are limited.

OBJECTIVES

The purposes were to: (1) examine the number of reviews of nursing education research published from 2018 through 2022, (2) identify journals publishing these reviews, (3) identify the types and topics of reviews in nursing education, and (4) analyze how these reviews are labeled (standard versus nonstandard).

DESIGN

This was a bibliometric study of reviews in nursing education.

METHODS

The search for reviews in nursing education was done using CINAHL Complete via the EBSCO host platform and was limited to articles published in peer reviewed journals. The results were imported into EndNote, and the title or abstract was used to identify the review type. The categorized reviews were then exported into Microsoft Excel. The titles and abstracts were searched to identify reviews in nursing education, resulting in 600 articles analyzed in this study. The topics of the reviews were identified via natural language processing techniques based on the Medical Subject Headings biomedical vocabulary in the manual tags with each article.

RESULTS

The number of reviews has steadily increased over the years. The top journal in which reviews were published was Nurse Education Today (n = 197). Nearly a quarter (n = 149, 24.8 %) of the reviews were integrative, followed by systematic (n = 117, 19.5 %), scoping (n = 117, 19.5 %), and literature (n = 85, 14.2 %). There were 12 main topics: most reviews were on simulation, followed by critical thinking methods and the academic achievement of nursing students.

CONCLUSION

This study documented an increase in the number of reviews of nursing education research over the last five years. The most common type was an integrative review, followed by systematic, scoping, and literature. Reviews on simulation were most common.

Rapport between nurses and adult patients with cancer in ambulatory oncology care settings: A scoping review

BACKGROUND

Although the importance of the nurse-patient relationship in oncology is established, a consolidated body of research describing nurse-patient rapport, especially in ambulatory care, is lacking.

OBJECTIVES

This scoping review aimed to explore knowledge about rapport between adult patients with cancer and their nurses in ambulatory oncology care, including nurse, patient, nurse-patient dyad, and system-level factors that influence rapport.

METHODS

A scoping review was conducted to explore sources of evidence and gaps in knowledge pertinent to future research. The Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for Systematic Reviews was used with searches in MEDLINE, CINAHL, and ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global databases. Experimental, descriptive observational, and qualitative study designs that focused on patients with cancer and their nurses within an ambulatory care setting were included. Results were reported using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews.

RESULTS

The search strategy collected 4538 studies of which 10 met study criteria after screening. Forward and backward citation tracking of included articles resulted in 4 additional studies. In total, 14 studies were extracted and analyzed. Synthesis of results from the individual sources resulted in three key observations: (a) there is an absence of studies that focus directly on nurse-patient rapport; (b) the majority of extracted data on rapport-related factors described aspects of nurses' attitudes; and (c) there was minimal information on patient, nurse-patient dyad, and system-level factors reported in these studies.

CONCLUSIONS

The lack of studies focused specifically on nurse-patient rapport in oncology ambulatory care indicates a notable gap in our empirical understanding of relationship-based care, a hallmark of cancer care provision.

Exploration of Cyberethics in Health Professions Education: A Scoping Review

As digital technologies rapidly integrate into Health Professions Education (HPE), understanding cyberethics is increasingly crucial. This scoping review explores the pedagogy of cyberethics in HPE, highlighting a significant gap in explicit definitions and conceptualizations. Additionally, the absence of specific theoretical frameworks in most documents raises concerns about research progression. Only four articles introduce educational interventions in cyberethics, indicating a promising avenue for future research. While comprehensive search methods are employed, limitations, including language biases, exist. Future investigations should broaden the discourse to encompass ethical implications of emerging technologies within HPE. Cultivating comprehensive, culturally sensitive, and inclusive guidelines is vital for ethical digital practices in the health care community.

Mitigating Racial And Ethnic Bias And Advancing Health Equity In Clinical Algorithms: A Scoping Review

In August 2022 the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued a notice of proposed rulemaking prohibiting covered entities, which include health care providers and health plans, from discriminating against individuals when using clinical algorithms in decision making. However, HHS did not provide specific guidelines on how covered entities should prevent discrimination. We conducted a scoping review of literature published during the period 2011-22 to identify health care applications, frameworks, reviews and perspectives, and assessment tools that identify and mitigate bias in clinical algorithms, with a specific focus on racial and ethnic bias. Our scoping review encompassed 109 articles comprising 45 empirical health care applications that included tools tested in health care settings, 16 frameworks, and 48 reviews and perspectives. We identified a wide range of technical, operational, and systemwide bias mitigation strategies for clinical algorithms, but there was no consensus in the literature on a single best practice that covered entities could employ to meet the HHS requirements. Future research should identify optimal bias mitigation methods for various scenarios, depending on factors such as patient population, clinical setting, algorithm design, and types of bias to be addressed.

Interventions to Improve Adolescent HIV Care Outcomes

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

This review of recent studies evaluating interventions to improve HIV care outcomes among adolescents with HIV (AHIV) was conducted to provide a comprehensive overview of the recent evidence, highlight promising approaches, and suggest directions for future research.

RECENT FINDINGS

Our scoping review revealed 65 studies evaluating a variety of interventions and using a range of study designs at various stages of research. Effective approaches included community-based, integrated service delivery models with case management, trained community adolescent treatment supporters, and consideration of social determinants of health. Recent evidence also supports the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of other innovative approaches, including mental health interventions as well as technology-delivered approaches; however, more research is needed to build the evidence base for these interventions. Our review's findings suggest that interventions providing comprehensive, individualized support are essential to improving HIV care outcomes among adolescents. More research is needed to build the evidence base for such interventions and ensure effective, equitable implementation to support the global target of ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030.

Postpartum symptom clusters in birthing individuals: A systematic review

BACKGROUND

Birthing individuals experience various postpartum symptoms which have been associated with adverse health outcomes. Previous systematic reviews have focused on the examination of individual symptoms and their impact on health, which have limited our understanding of postpartum symptom clusters.

OBJECTIVE

To examine the compositions of symptom clusters, analytic methodologies and predictors of symptom clusters in birthing individuals up to 1 year postpartum.

DESIGN

Systematic review.

METHODS

This systematic review was reported following the PRISMA. Five databases were searched: PubMed, Embase, CINAHL Complete, PsycINFO and Scopus. Two reviewers performed title and abstract and full-text screening independently. Standard Quality Assessment Criteria were used to assess the articles' qualities. Key information was extracted into evidence table, which was checked for accuracy and completeness. A narrative synthesis was conducted.

RESULTS

A total of 30 articles were included. Studies were conducted in 16 countries, mostly in Europe (n = 9) and North America (n = 7). The majority were quantitative (n = 27) and cross-sectional (n = 27). Factor analysis was the most frequently used analytic methodology (n = 21). All three qualitative studies used grounded theory. Taking into consideration the variations among the studies, stress (n = 15, infant or partner-related and from other sources), depression (n = 12), somatic (n = 12) and anxiety clusters (n = 10) were most frequently identified. Symptom cluster predictors were examined in less than half of the included studies (n = 13). Among these, most were focused on how individual postpartum symptoms influence symptom clusters.

CONCLUSIONS

Stress, depression, somatic and anxiety clusters are the most frequently identified postpartum symptom clusters. Future studies should examine the consistency, stability and clinical meaningfulness of these four symptom clusters.

RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE

The identification and management of the four symptom clusters should be of particular interest to clinicians and researchers.

How to identify predatory journals in a search: Precautions for nurses

ABSTRACT

Nursing journals offer important content on new practices and approaches to care. Unfortunately, predatory journals that use unsavory publication practices have emerged. This article shares guidance to help nurses effectively appraise information and their sources, distinguish predatory from legitimate journals, and conduct due diligence.

Integrity of Databases for Literature Searches in Nursing: Avoiding Predatory Journals

The quality of literature used as the foundation to any research or scholarly project is critical. The purpose of this study was to analyze the extent to which predatory nursing journals were included in credible databases, MEDLINE, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), and Scopus, commonly used by nurse scholars when searching for information. Findings indicated that no predatory nursing journals were currently indexed in MEDLINE or CINAHL, and only one journal was in Scopus. Citations to articles published in predatory nursing journals are not likely found in a search using these curated databases but rather through Google or Google Scholar search engines.

Analysis of Citation Patterns and Impact of Predatory Sources in the Nursing Literature

PURPOSE

This study was undertaken to learn how predatory journal articles were cited in articles published in legitimate (nonpredatory) nursing journals. The extent of citation and citation patterns were studied.

DESIGN

A two-phase approach was used.

METHODS

In Phase 1, 204 articles published in legitimate nursing journals that cited a predatory publication were randomly selected for analysis from a list of 814 articles with predatory journal citations. In Phase 2, the four predatory journal articles that were cited most frequently were analyzed further to examine their citation patterns.

FINDINGS

The majority (n = 148, 72.55%) of the articles that cited a predatory publication were research reports. Most commonly, the predatory article was only cited once (n = 117, 61.58%). Most (n = 158, 82.72%) of the predatory articles, though, were used substantively, that is, to provide a basis for the study or methods, describe the results, or explain the findings. The four articles in Phase 2 generated 38 citations in legitimate journals, published from 2011 to 2019, demonstrating persistence in citation. An evaluation of the quality of these articles was mixed.

CONCLUSIONS

The results of this study provide an understanding of the use and patterns of citations to predatory articles in legitimate nursing journals. Authors who choose predatory journals as the channel to disseminate their publications devalue the work that publishers, editors, and peer reviewers play in scholarly dissemination. Likewise, those who cite these works are also contributing to the problem of predatory publishing in nursing.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Nurse authors should not publish their work in predatory journals and should avoid citing articles from these journals, which disseminates the content through the scholarly nursing literature.

Effects of therapeutic plasma exchange on anticoagulants in patients receiving therapeutic anticoagulation: a systematic review

Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) removes coagulation proteins, but its impact on therapeutic anticoagulation is unknown. We performed a systematic review of the literature to determine the coagulation effects of TPE in patients receiving systemic anticoagulation. We searched MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE, and Web of Science until June 2018 for studies combining controlled vocabulary and keywords related to therapeutic plasma exchange, plasmapheresis, anticoagulants, and therapy. The primary outcome was the effect of TPE on anti-Xa activity, activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), or international normalized ratio (INR). The secondary outcome was reports of post-TPE bleeding or thrombosis. A total of 1830 references were screened and eight studies identified. Our selected studies (five case reports and three case series) involved 23 patients and evaluated the effects of seven anticoagulants. Six studies of unfractionated heparin, low-molecular-weight heparins, and direct oral anticoagulants demonstrated an anti-Xa level decline. Two studies of unfractionated heparin and low-molecular-weight heparins showed an aPTT increase. One study of warfarin showed a post-TPE INR increase. Reports of post-TPE bleeding occurred in two patients and thrombosis in one. In patients receiving therapeutic anticoagulation, TPE is associated with anti-Xa activity decline and aPTT and INR increase. These coagulation changes do not appear to significantly increase bleeding or thrombotic risk. Our data suggest the need for prospective studies to investigate the true clinical impact of TPE on therapeutic anticoagulation.

The clinical and radiographic impact of center of rotation lateralization in reverse shoulder arthroplasty: a systematic review

BACKGROUND

Reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) has been widely adopted in the United States since its approval by the United States Food and Drug Administration in 2003. Advancements in metallurgy and design (including locking screws) have yielded clinically successful prostheses with a lateralized center of rotation (COR). This systematic review compared postsurgical outcomes and failure rates for lateral vs. medial COR RSA. We hypothesized that progressive lateralization of the COR results in greater ROM, improved clinical outcome scores, fewer acromial stress fractures, and less notching but a higher rate of glenoid implant baseplate failure and dislocation.

METHODS

PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, CINAHL, and Cochrane databases were searched from inception through June 7, 2017, following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Eighteen articles were included after final review. Studies were stratified on whether a prosthesis with a lateral or medial COR was used. Comparisons included shoulder range of motion (ROM), functional outcome scores, and reported complications.

RESULTS

RSA demonstrated significant improvements in outcome scores postsurgery regardless of prosthesis type. Overall, this study found no clear difference in outcome scores between the lateralized and medialized COR groups. The lateralized COR group displayed increased postoperative ROM. There was a higher reported incidence of scapular notching with medial COR prostheses. Otherwise, there were no clear differences in complications between the 2 groups.

DISCUSSION

The data suggest no significant differences exist between groups in outcome scores. The lateralized COR prosthesis showed increased postoperative external rotation and decreased scapular notching. Additional well-constructed randomized controlled trials would allow more effective comparison of these prosthesis designs.

Acantholytic dermatosis of the vulvocrural area

Acantholytic dermatosis of the vulvocrural area is a rare skin disorder characterized by solitary or multiple skin-colored to white, smooth papules or plaques. Histopathological features of both Hailey-Hailey disease and Darler's disease are present. There is acantholysis, which may involve the full thickness of the epidermis, and dyskeratosis with corps ronds and grains. There may be marked hyperkeratosis and focal parakeratosis. We report a case of this rare disease and discuss its differential diagnosis and treatment.

Cytokine expression patterns distinguish HIV associated skin diseases

AIDS is known to cause a shift of cytokines in the periphery. However, predominant cytokines in skin of patients with HIV-associated skin diseases have not been clearly defined. We hypothesized that there are distinct cytokine profiles that distinguish among the different clinical manifestations of AIDS-related skin diseases. To test this hypothesis, lesional and non-lesional skin was biopsied from 53 HIV+ patients with Kaposi's sarcoma (KS), psoriasis, and pruritus due to eosinophilic folliculitis, and from HIV negative controls with psoriasis or KS prior to therapy. Immunohistochemistry was performed with antibodies to tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, interleukin (IL)-10, interferon (IFN)-gamma, and interferon-inducible protein (IP)-10. HIV positive individuals included 10 with psoriasis, 14 with pruritus, and 15 with Kaposi's sarcoma. HIV negative controls included 12 with psoriasis and two with KS. Semi-quantitative analysis of cytokine staining was confirmed by optical density using a digital imaging system on four representative skin sections from each disease. Optical density analyses were conducted using ANOVA and t-tests. We found that epidermis overlying HIV+ Kaposi's sarcoma was hyperproliferative and was highest in IP-10, IFN-gamma, and IL-10 (P=0.0001). HIV+ pruritus was significantly highest in TNF-alpha (P=0.0001) staining. HIV+ psoriasis represented an intermediate state for all four cytokines. Normal skin adjacent to lesions showed the same relative patterns, with lower intensities. Skin diseases seen frequently in the setting of HIV and immunodeficiency have relatively distinct levels and patterns of cytokine expression that may reflect immune dysfunction, reactivity to HIV and to opportunistic infections.

Calciphylaxis

Calciphylaxis is a rare, life-threatening condition of widespread metastatic calcification most commonly seen in the setting of end-stage renal disease. The etiology of calciphylaxis is not well described, though there are several hypotheses. Cutaneous lesions are characteristically found on the abdomen, buttocks, or thighs as reticulated, painful, purple plaques that often undergo ulceration and may serve as a portal of entry for potentially life-threatening infectious agents. Histology reveals medial calcification with intimal proliferation involving small vessels in the subcutaneous fat, associated with a lymphohistiocytic infiltrate of the affected lobules. Treatment, including phosphate binders and parathyroidectomy, is not universally effective. We present one case of calciphylaxis and discuss the clinical features, pathophysiology, histology, and treatment of the condition.
