Abstract
Introduction The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is mainly a respiratory syndrome that can affect multiple organ systems, causing a variety of symptoms. Among the most common and characteristic symptoms are deficits in smell and taste perception, which may last for weeks/months after COVID-19 diagnosis owing to mechanisms that are not fully elucidated. Methods In order to identify the determinants of olfactory symptom persistence, we obtained olfactory mucosa (OM) from 21 subjects, grouped according to clinical criteria: i) with persistent olfactory symptoms; ii) with transient olfactory symptoms; iii) without olfactory symptoms; and iv) non-COVID-19 controls. Cells from the olfactory mucosa were harvested for transcriptome analyses. Results and discussion RNA-Seq assays showed that gene expression levels are altered for a long time after infection. The expression profile of micro RNAs appeared significantly altered after infection, but no relationship with olfactory symptoms was found. On the other hand, patients with persistent olfactory deficits displayed increased levels of expression of genes involved in the inflammatory response and zinc homeostasis, suggesting an association with persistent or transient olfactory deficits in individuals who experienced SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Italy is one of the main destinations for winter tourism. Specifically, the country can currently count on more than 5.700 km of ski runs, served by more than 1.700 lift facilities Objective. The purpose of this study has been the analysis of injuries in ski resorts in a continuous period spanning over several seasons (17 years). In addition, the possible effect of safety law enforcements, introduced in the selected period, were considered. MATERIAL AND METHODS A ski injuries database, prepared as a duty of policemen involved in rescue activity and consisting of 246616 records of injuries for the period from 7th December 2002 to 31st December 2019, has been analysed for qualitative and quantitative variables. RESULTS The majority of injuries (58%) occurred on slopes with medium difficulties. After the introduction of national ski safety law (Law 363/2003), a strong diffusion of protective helmet has been noticed. The adoption of the helmet has significantly reduced cranio-facial injuries both in children and in adults. Moreover, no death events were recorded in the database after the introduction of Law 363/2003. The diffusion of ski accident insurance programs is slowly increasing, even if in the year 2019 approximately 38% of skiers still didn't have an insurance program. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS It is possible to speculate that the introduction of a national ski safety law had a positive effect on injuries reduction. At the same time, collected data underlined several critical points that seem, at least in part, addressed by the law revision performed in 2021.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
Since the beginning of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, literature data are progressively accumulating, attesting to the possible prognostic role of cardiac troponins in patients who need hospitalization because of COVID-19 infection.
Purpose
To assess whether myocardial injury (measured by high sensitivity troponins) is an independent cause of disease severity and prognosis.
Methods
We performed a patient-level metanalysis (PROSPERO ID: CRD42020213209) in unselected patients hospitalized because of COVID-19 infection in whom the severity of respiratory failure was also evaluated at admission. To allow for comparison, troponin values were normalized to their threshold levels to obtain a normalized troponin (nTn) value which was used as a continuous variable in all analysis.
Results
A total of 722 patients were included in the analysis. Of note, patients who had elevated troponins at hospital admission had a significantly lower oxygenation status than those with normal nTn (PaO2/FiO2 232±215 vs. 276±124 mmHg/%; p<0.001). On the contrary, those with cardiovascular comorbidities had similar PaO2/FiO2 but higher nTn than those without (5.6817 vs. 2.1110 ng/mL; p=0.002).
After a median follow-up of 14 days, 180 deaths were observed. At multivariable regression analysis, age, male sex, moderate-severe renal dysfunction (eGFR <30 mL/min/m2) and lower PaO2/FiO2, were independent predictor of death (igure 1). The restricted cubic spline curves in Figure 2A and 2B show the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence interval for death according to nTn and PaO2/FiO2 levels as continuous variables. A linear increase in the HR is observed with lower PaO2/FiO2 values below the normal value of 300. On the contrary, the nTn spline curve is near-flat with large confidence interval for values above the normality thresholds.
Conclusion
In patients hospitalized for COVID-19, mortality is mainly driven by gender, age and respiratory failure while myocardial damage is not an independent predictor of worse survival when respiratory function is accounted for.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
In the last years prognosis of cancer patients (pts) has been improved, but the develop of cardiotoxicity (CTX) in pts with low CV risk treated with cumulative doses of Anthracycline (ANT) considered safe, led to investigate the possible role of the genetic profile in the onset of CTX.
Purpose
To study the role of some single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) as predictive genetic markers of individual susceptibility to CTX induced by anticancer treatment.
Methods
We have enrolled women with non-metastatic breast cancer who had to start a therapy with ANT. The presence of a known heart disease, a previous mediastinal irradiation and a previous treatment with ANT, were the main exclusion criteria. All pts underwent complete cardiological evaluation (ECG, echo) before the beginning of the therapy (T0), after each ANT cycle and every 3 months up to 1 year of follow-up after the end of treatment. During each visit, we performed the determination of troponin I (TnI) and NT-proBNP. The genetic profile of each pts was also investigated, analyzing 6 SNPs belonging to 3 different genes (two for each genes) coding for enzymes or enzyme systems involved in the metabolism of ANT. DNA extraction from blood samples was performed using the QIAamp DNA Mini kit (QIAGEN). The DNA extracted was genotyped (by performing TaqMan SNP Genotyping assays) identifying 3 possible variants for each SNPs: homozygosity for the protective and “at risk” variant and heterozygosity.
Results
179 pts finished the follow-up and from the analysis of the trend of biomarkers we found that 53 pts (30%) showed a significant increase in TnI (>0.04ng/mL) or less than this cut-off but persistently >0.015ng/mL in at least 2 measurements (“TnI+ group”), in the remaining 126 pts the TnI remained non-measurable (“TnI− group”); 76 pts (43%) showed NT-proBNP values ≥125 ng/L in at least two consecutive determinations (“NT-proBNP + group”),in the remaining 57% of pts this increase was not detected (“NT-proBNP - group”). Comparing “TnI+ group” to “TnI− group” we observed that only the genotyping of the SNPs rs1149222 (G/T) belonging to the ABCB4 gene is distributed differently in the two groups, in particular the homozygosity for the “at risk” variant (G/G) was present in 13% of the pts of the “TnI+ group” vs 5% in the “TnI− group” (p 0.06). The results of the comparison of “NT-proBNP+ group” vs “NT-proBNP− group”, showed that the genotyping of the SNPs rs6759892 (G/T) belonging to the UGT1A6 gene was distributed differently, the homozygosity for the “at risk” variant (G/G) was present in 28% of the “NT-proBNP+ group” vs 17% in the “NT-proBNP− group” (p 0.07).
Conclusion
Together with the baseline clinical evaluation, genetic markers could contribute to the early identification of pts at high risk of developing CTX especially following treatment with ANT and they could support future therapeutic decisions and the planning of taylored strategies for the prevention of the CTX development.

Abstract
Abstract
Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) is a ubiquitous enzyme in milk with timetemperature destruction similar to that of certain pathogens destroyed in pasteurization. Measurement of ALP to indicate proper pasteurization is a common practice. Recently the public health level for ALP was decreased to 350 mU/L, a level below the sensitivity of older colorimetric ALP methods. This study was conducted within the structure of the International Dairy Federation and the International Organization for Standardization to evaluate the reproducibility of the chemiluminescence method (Charm PasLite) for ALP at 50, 100, 350, and 500 mU/L in whole milk of multiple species to meet new regulations in the United States and proposed regulations in the European Union (EU). Fifteen laboratories from 8 countries evaluated bovine, goat, sheep, and buffalo milk, bovine skim milk, 20% fat cream, and 2% fat chocolate milk. At ALP levels of 350 and 500 mU/L, the average relative standard deviation for repeatability (RSDr) was 7.5%, and the average relative standard deviation of reproducibility was (RSDR) 15%. For ALP at 100 and 50 mU/L, the average RSDr values were 10.5 and 12.6%, respectively, and the average RSDR values were 18 and 25%, respectively. The limit of detection was 20 mU/L. Results are comparable to those obtained with other enzymatic photo-activated system methods such as the fluorometric method. Results indicate that the method is suitable for measuring ALP in the milk of multiple species and in dairy drinks at U.S. and proposed EU levels.

Abstract
Abstract
Introduction
despite good progress in the management of patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), this disease remains one of the major cause of stroke, heart failure, sudden death and cardiovascular morbidity. Screening for silent AF is recommended in high risk population, especially in elderly, but often it is not applied for the absence of medical prescriptions or long waiting times
Purpose
to evaluate the effectiveness of a remote monitoring through ECG Holter and 12-lead ECG provided by a network of pharmacies across the Country for the screening of AF
Methods
according to a Ministerial Decree, from 2010 authorized pharmacies may provide specialist outpatient care services. Health Telematic Network, in collaboration with our Cardiology University Department and Federfarma (National Association of Pharmacists), has installed in 4,008 authorized pharmacies across the Country a telematic network connected to a single Telemedicine platform where cardiologists were available for tele-consulting. In order to identify silent or symptomatic AF, 12-lead ECG and ECG Holter monitoring were performed in patients with episodes of palpitation, syncope or pre-syncope or with a history of AF. Informations regarding lenght of AF episodes, mean heart rate and anticoagulant therapy were collected
Results
From Jan 2017 to Dec 2018 a total of 31,156 ECG Holter monitoring were performed (46% male, mean age 61 years). Among these records, 2390 (8%) showed paroxysmal or persistent AF (53% male, mean age 77±10 years). The lenght of AF episodes was greater of 6 minutes in 14% cases and mean heart rate was greater of 90 bpm in 406 patients (17%). History of AF was not previously known in 669 patients (28%). None of this subgroup of patients and only 18% of patients with known paroxysmal AF were taking anticoagulant therapy. In the same period 196,349 ECG were performed (mean age 78 years) and 17,088 have been carried out in patients aged 65 years or older. Among these group of patients, 831 records showed unknown AF (5%): 356 (43%) high ventricular rate AF, 385 (46%) medium ventricular rate AF and 90 (11%) low ventricular rate AF. All the patients with unknown AF episodes or with frequent high ventricular rate AF episodes were referred to their General Practitioner or Cardiologist for urgent evaluation and therapeutic management.
Conclusion
our data confirm the important role of a single telematic network in which health care services can be provided timely by authorized pharmacies across all the Country to promote early diagnosis and treatment of AF, then resulting in a likely positive impact on related cardiovascular events

Abstract
Abstract
Background
Fingolimod is an immunosuppressive drug that prevents the typical autoimmune responses of multiple sclerosis (MS). This drug can cause, even after the first dose, bradycardia and atrioventricular conduction block (AVB). According to a decree of the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP), the first administration of a dose of fingolimod must meet the following conditions: a) 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) and blood pressure (BP) evaluations before first dose administration; b) continuous ECG and BP monitoring every hour during the first 6 hours of treatment. The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of our virtual Intensive Care Unit connected to selected Departments of Neurology for cardiology monitoring via web, during the first dose administration of fingolimod in patients with MS.
Methods
Health Telematic Network, in collaboration with our Cardiology Department, has installed in several Neurology Departments in the country intensive care equipment with real time monitoring via the web of ECG, BP and oximetry. The telemonitoring system is composed of an IntelliVue MP2 monitor, for 12-lead ECG recording, and by an IntelliVue Philips M3150 Central, for continuous remote monitoring of ECG and the detection and storage of arrhythmias. The HTN Cardiologist thus can evaluate in real time ECG monitored and each alarm detected.
Results
From Jan 2014 to Dec 2018, 172 sites participated and 6041 patients were enrolled. The telemonitoring system recognized 5116 episodes of bradycardia, 297 first degree AVB, 213 second degree AVB Mobitz I, 48 second degree AVB Mobitz II, 618 pathological lengthening of the QTc interval, single monomorphic ventricular ectopic beats in 266 patients, bigeminy ventricular extrasystoles in 15 patients and polymorphic ventricular extrasystoles in 3 cases. 6 cases of nonsustained ventricular tachycardia occurred and were recognized.
Conclusion
This web-based real time telemonitoring project was an optimal solution for the administration of the first dose of fingolimod, according to current indications of the CHMP. The RITMO project could lead the way for the use of a multidisciplinary approach for the management of new therapies.

Abstract
Hydrophilic and hydrophobic interactions strongly affect the solvation dynamics of biomolecules. To understand their role, small model systems are generally employed to simplify the investigations. In this study the amphiphile trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) is chosen as an exemplar, and studied by means of extended frequency range depolarized light scattering (EDLS) experiments as a function of solute concentration. This technique proves to be a suitable tool for investigating different aspects of aqueous solvation, being able at the same time to provide information about relaxation processes and vibrational modes of solvent and solute. In the case study of TMAO, we find that the relaxation dynamics of hydration water is moderately retarded compared to the bulk, and the perturbation induced by the solute on surrounding water is confined to the first hydration shell. The results highlight the hydrophobic character of TMAO in its interaction with water. The number of molecules taking part in the solvation process decreases as the solute concentration increases, following a trend consistent with the hydration water-sharing model, and suggesting that aggregation between solute molecules is negligible. Finally, the analysis of the resonant modes in the THz region and the comparison with the corresponding results obtained for the isosteric molecule tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) allow us to provide new insights into the different solvating properties of these two biologically relevant molecules.

Abstract
We study the relaxation of water molecules next to hydrophobic solutes with different functional groups by Brillouin light scattering. Evidence is given for (i) water activation energy in trimethylamine-N-oxide, proline and t-butyl alcohol diluted solutions which is comparable to that of neat water, almost independent from solute mole fraction and (ii) moderate slowdown of relaxation time of proximal water compared to the bulk, which is consistent with excluded volume models. Assuming that the main contribution to viscosity comes from bulk and hydration water, a rationale is given of the phenomenological Arrhenius' laws for the viscosity of diluted aqueous solutions.

Abstract
Many retrospective studies have recently shown that microvessel density could represent a valid independent prognostic factor for overall survival and disease-free survival for primary tumours. The fact that oral tumours with a higher microvessel density showed a tendency to present distant metastasis and a bad prognosis, suggested that angiogenetic activity would play a pivotal role also in oral carcinomas, exerting a negative effect on the clinical course and representing an independent negative prognostic factor also for this type of tumour. Based on these results, microvessel density was evaluated, in the present study, in 64 cases of squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity, using immunohistochemical analysis with anti-CD34 monoclonal antibody. Possible correlations between microvessel density and clinico-pathological parameters were analysed, such as: age, sex, tumour localization and size, TNM stage and histological grading. Statistical analysis has shown that microvessel density differs in the 3 histological groups (G1, G2, G3) (p = 0.0331), and between node-positive and node-negative patients (p < 0.0001). No statistical correlation was observed between microvessel density and other clinical parameters such as age, sex, tumour site and size.

Abstract
The authors evaluated 97 knees out of a series of 135 fractures of the femur in 130 patients, revealing 34 cases of capsuloligamentous laxity, equal to 35% of the cases. No specific correlation between type of trauma, type and site of fracture, and lesion of the ligaments was observed. The frequency of unrecognized lesions, particularly in the posterior capsule, was made evident. The frequency of ligamentous lesions rises to 44.4% when fracture of the femur is associated with fracture of the homolateral tibia as compared to 26.7% in cases of isolated fracture of the femur. Recurvatum, which was present in a fair number of the cases, was related more to post-fracture therapy and rehabilitation rather than to specific capsuloligamentous lesion of the knee.

Abstract
A child is described who suffered from a severe congenital anemia. The anemia persisted and a regular transfusional regimen became necessary. Bone marrow aspirates showed an erythroblastic hyperplasia associated with some dyserythropoietic features. A most striking and constant finding was the presence of many inter-erythroblastic chromatin bridges. The reticulocyte count was always low, in spite of the increased erythropoietic activity. A beta-thalassemia trait inherited from the mother was demonstrated. The hypothesis of dyserythropoiesis/thalassemia syndrome was put forward, based on the assumption that the two genes may have interacted with each other.

Abstract
From October 1989, in our Radiology Department, digital radiographic techniques have been applied to double-contrast arthrography of the knee. In this preliminary work we examine the diagnostic contribution of computed radiography to arthrographic findings by comparing image quality of conventional and digital radiographs using a dedicated Philips unit. The digital unit is compatible with all the extant radiographic equipment in our department and automatically supplies two images, the first one resembling a conventional radiograph, the second one characterized by a broader exposure range that allows a clear visualization of soft tissues. To obtain high-quality radiographs the processing curves of the system were modified, in particular by shifting the curve leftward, thus reducing its slope, and by amending the parameters related to spatial frequencies. The changes in the reading curves made these images more useful: they were more homogeneous and allowed a better evaluation of fine details. Relative to the second type of images, characterized by both edge enhancement and a broader recording range, it was enough to shift the curve along the X-axis to compensate for a moderate image overexposure. Keeping in mind that the aim of this preliminary work was not compare the two techniques from a diagnostic point of view, in the authors' opinion the two yield similar information for the diagnostic evaluation of meniscal traumas. On the contrary, if the same principles are applied to the evaluation of capsulo-ligamentous components, digital arthrography appears to be more accurate than the conventional technique, the latter being deceptive especially in the evaluation of cruciate ligaments.

Abstract
The Authors report their experience in the employment of a computerized digital radiographic system in Neonatal Intensive Care. The analog screen-film system is replaced by photosensitive imaging plates, scanned after X-ray exposure by a laser that releases the digital image, which can then be manipulated on computer work-stations. In a period of twelve months about 200 chest-abdomen X-ray examinations in Neonatal Intensive Care have been performed using this method with good technical and diagnostic results. The use of digital radiography in the neonatal area is of high interest: this system produces good quality images, there is a reduction in radiation dose and 'retakes', the system allows selective enhancement of different structures and their magnification.

Abstract
Experience with digital radiography applied to double contrast arthrography of the knee performed with a photostimulable phosphor plate is reported. The image processing technique used to improve the digital image is described, and some theoretical considerations are discussed. A preliminary comparison is also made between arthrographic images obtained with conventional screen-film systems and the digital system, especially in respect of the image quality and visualization of the soft tissue structures least well demonstrated with conventional arthrography.

Abstract
An unusual case of amyloid deposition in the wall of gastric pouch 15 years after surgery for peptic ulcer is presented. The radiographic and computed tomographic (CT) findings included marked thickening of the gastric wall associated with clusters of calcifications and ulcerated mucosa. These features are illustrated and the pertinent literature is briefly reviewed.

Abstract
Twenty-nine patients with peripheral intrathoracic lesions underwent real-time US and US-guided biopsy. The lesions were mainly atypical fluid collections in 3 patients and mainly solid in the extant 26. Biopsies performed with fine aspirating or cutting needles (20-22 gauge) were successful in all patients; an unquestionable diagnosis was made in 27 cases with cytology and/or histology. Only one patient experienced mild asymptomatic pneumothorax after biopsy, which did not require chest-tube drainage. The authors stress the important diagnostic role of US-guided fine-needle biopsy as an useful and safe method for the evaluation of peripheral intrathoracic lesions.

Abstract
The authors report their experience with the routinary use of a computerized digital radiography system in Intensive Neonatal Care department. The conventional screen-film system is replaced by photostimulable imaging plates, which are scanned during processing by a laser providing the digital image. The latter is subsequently processable on high-resolution monitors. Over a 6-month period 86 examinations were performed with this method in Intensive Neonatal Care; good technical results were obtained. The use of digital radiography in intensive neonatal care is extremely promising for it allows high-quality images to be obtained, and radiation dose and number of acquisitions to be reduced. Finally, work stations allow both selective visualization of different body structures and their magnification.

Abstract
The authors reviewed 122 patients affected with popliteal cysts and treated between 1975 and 1985 with or without surgery; follow-up ranged from 1 to 7 years (average 3 years and 2 months). The patients were subdivided into 3 age groups, and observed for the clinical, anatomo-pathological and therapeutic differences among them. Cysts affecting children and adults were considered to be acute, or chronic bursitis, and those affecting elderly patients true cysts deriving from the joint cavity. The diagnostic effectiveness of arthrography and sonography is emphasized.

Abstract
The plica is a synovial fold inside the knee joint that may become symptomatic if for any reason the fold is converted into a bowstring. In 42 patients with chronic knee problems, arthrograms of the knee were obtained with evidence of the plica syndrome. Twenty-four were asymptomatic, 18 symptomatic, and of these 16 were excised. After a mean follow-up period of 3 years, 10 of the symptomatic patients were free of symptoms, while eight were unchanged or worse. The plica syndrome is not common, and careful assessment must be made by exclusion with clinical examination, double-contrast arthrography, and arthroscopy.

Abstract
The authors conducted a statistical study and a critical review on a series of 1,300 patients examined with double-contrast fluoroscopically guided knee arthrography using a simple examination technique. Arthrographic diagnoses were subsequently compared with arthrotomic (500 patients), arthroscopic (350 patients), and clinical (450 patients) diagnoses. The critical review pointed out the high diagnostic accuracy (90%) and the good sensitivity (87%) of arthrographic examination in patients affected with pathologic conditions of the cruciate ligaments. In collateral ligament diseases and in capsular ruptures arthrographic sensitivity was not as high but still acceptable (74%). Capsular tears and medial collateral ligament tears can be identified when contrast medium is seen leaking from the knee joint. Cruciate ligament tears may be partial or complete: if a tear is partial the synovial surface of the cruciate ligament cannot be identified the cruciate ligament is wavy, lumpy, or focally thin, while in complete tears the synovial surface of the cruciate ligament cannot be identified either entirely or partially.

Abstract
Three cases of posterior apophyseal fracture of a lumbosacral vertebral body are described. This disco-apophyseal lesion is typical of adolescents and sports-related trauma. Like all acute and chronic apophysiolyses it is probably enhanced by a constitutional weakness of the apophyseal area, closely fused with the anulus fibrosus of the disc.

Abstract
A computed radiographic system for generating and archiving digital radiographic images was employed in ivp. The system produces 2 digital images per exposure: the first one simulates a conventional radiograph, while the second enhances some spatial frequencies and emphasizes the structure borders. The conventional radiographs and the digital images of 50 patients submitted to ivp were reviewed by four experienced radiologists to evaluate their comparative quality, and the results were statistically analyzed. Digital images proved to be better than conventional radiographs for some of the selected parameters, especially in the evaluation of renal edges and sometimes for calyceal opacification. As for the other parameters, no statistically significant difference was observed between conventional radiographs and digital images.

Abstract
The authors performed a statistical study on a series of 1000 patients examined with double-contrast fluoroscopically-guided knee arthrography. Arthrographic diagnoses were compared with the arthrotomic (500 patients), arthroscopic (350 patients) or clinical diagnoses of 150 patients with a follow-up of 6 months. In this series of patients with a history of "recurrent meniscal injury", arthrographic diagnoses were confirmed in a high percentage of cases, with 96.9% accuracy, 96.7% sensitivity for tears, and 98.6% specificity. On the basis of these results the authors suggest double-contrast arthrography as an examination of considerable value in the diagnosis of meniscal lesions, while in their opinion arthroscopy should be limited to questionable cases, to complex lesions with involvement of multiple articular structure and to the alterations clearly treatable by arthroscopy.

Abstract
The diagnosis of a popliteal cyst is usually made on the basis of a history of discomfort and pain in the medial portion of the popliteal region, together with the finding of a palpable mass in the popliteal fossa. The clinical diagnosis can be confirmed by knee arthrography, if the cyst communicates with the knee joint; in recent years, however, noninvasive US has also become an important diagnostic aid to the radiologist. The S. Anna Hospital (Ferrara) experience is here reported in the diagnosis of symptomatic popliteal cysts, with no valve mechanism at the connection with the joint cavity. Arthrography was performed on 438 patients with popliteal cysts to determine their extent and size in relation to the symptoms and to the presence of underlying knee pathology; only 76 patients from this group were then submitted to surgery. The authors confirm that popliteal cyst is a frequent occasional finding during knee arthrography which almost completely lacks any clinical relevance in most cases. Moreover, taking arthrographic findings as a starting point, the authors describe the different anatomotopographic patterns of popliteal cysts.

Abstract
Aging and female sex are major risk factors for cholesterol gallstones: in addition to hepatic secretion of lithogenic bile, decreased gallbladder contractility may play a role in such physiological conditions. This study was aimed at evaluating the effect of age and sex on gallbladder kinetics in healthy subjects. Gallbladder volume was measured on the US images of 157 fasting subjects using the sum-of-cylinders method. No significant difference was observed between males and females. On the contrary, age was shown to have a significant positive correlation with fasting gallbladder volume, particularly in males. In a second group of 63 healthy volunteers gallbladder volumes were evaluated both before and after a standard meal. The subjects were grouped according to age, and fasting gallbladder volume appeared to be significantly greater in the groups formed by older people. Gallbladder volumes were compared in younger groups (under 35), and gallbladder emptying resulted to be much more complete in males than in females. On the contrary, no significant difference was observed between males and females over 50--which suggests a possible role of sex- and age-related hormonal factors. The above changes in gallbladder function may facilitate bile stasis which might in turn contribute to the increased risk for cholesterol gallstones notoriously associated with advanced age and female sex.
