Biological and environmental correlates of developmental outcome of prematurely born infants in early adolescence

Examined the role of biological factors (birth weight and perinatal medical complications) and psychosocial factors (maternal attitudes, paternal involvement, mother's personal state, marital adjustment, family relations, and socioeconomic status) in predicting long-term outcome of 90 Israeli adolescents born prematurely at very low birth weight (VLBW). As compared with 90 adolescents born full-term at normal birth weight (NBW), the VLBW children scored lower on all measures except reading comprehension. IQ, visual-motor coordination, and hyperactive behavior were predicted by both biological and psychosocial variables, visual memory by biological variables, and reading comprehension by psychosocial variables. The findings support chiefly the main effects model of developmental psychopathology (i.e., biological and psychosocial variables are additive in predicting outcomes), but also the interactional model (e.g., SES was influential in predicting visual-motor coordination and hyperactive behavior in the VLBW group but not in the NBW group).

Trisomy 9 confined to the placenta: prenatal diagnosis and neonatal follow-up

Chorionic villus sampling (CVS), performed on a woman in the 23rd menstrual week because of bilateral fetal hydronephrosis and suspected intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR), documented trisomy 9 in all cells examined. Chromosomes of amniocytes and fetal blood lymphocytes were normal. The ongoing pregnancy was monitored closely, and at 37 weeks, a phenotypic normal male infant was delivered. Multiple placental biopsies showed 47,XY,+9, while a repeat chromosome analysis of the infant and biopsies from the amniotic membrane were normal (46,XY). This case further emphasizes the association between placental aneuploidy and IUGR. To our knowledge, nonmosaic trisomy 9 in CVS confined to the chorionic villi and later confirmed in the placenta has not been reported previously.

Fathers' hospital visits to their preterm infants as a predictor of father-infant relationship and infant development

This short-term longitudinal study assessed the degree to which the frequency of fathers' visits with their preterm infants in the hospital was associated with the quality of ongoing and long-term fathering and infant development. Data on fathering and infant development were collected during the hospital stay, at discharge, at 8 months of age, and at 18 months of age, using both questionnaires and observational schedules. The frequency of visits was significantly correlated with more extensive and positive patterns of fathering at discharge and later periods. It was also associated with more positive perceptions of the infant, as well as with weight gain during hospitalization and psychosocial aspects of later infant development during the first 18 months. The discussion emphasized possible ways in which early paternal contact in the hospital might influence fathers, mothers, and infants. The frequency of paternal visits was high-lighted as a variable useful in predicting high-risk parenting.

Mother- and father-preterm infant relationship in the hospital preterm nursery

The relationships of Israeli mothers and fathers with their 38 preterm infants during hospitalization were traced in a short-term longitudinal study. Parent-infant interactions were observed and self-reports of parental feelings and perceptions were assessed twice: at the beginning and end of the nursery period. Mothers engaged in more caregiving, talking, and holding during initial contacts, but the disparity in maternal and paternal interactions decreased with time. Except for caregiving, in which mothers still surpassed fathers, fathers equaled mothers in all other activities at the time of the infants' discharge from the hospital. Fathers consistently surpassed mothers in playing and stimulating. Mothers perceived their infants to be more difficult than did fathers but reported enjoying them more. With time, parents were less disappointed and concerned over the infants' well-being but perceived them as more difficult. The data also demonstrated an association between infant behavioral states, parental feelings and perceptions, and parental behavior.
