Design and fabrication of a perpendicular magnetic tunnel junction based nonvolatile programmable switch achieving 40% less area using shared-control transistor structure

A compact nonvolatile programmable switch (NVPS) using 90 nm CMOS technology together with perpendicular magnetic tunnel junction (p-MTJ) devices is fabricated for zero-standby-power field-programmable gate array. Because routing information does not change once it is programmed into an NVPS, high-speed read and write accesses are not required and a write-control transistor can be shared among all the NVPSs, which greatly simplifies structure of the NVPS. In fact, the effective area of the proposed NVPS is reduced by 40% compared to that of a conventional MTJ-based NVPS. The instant on/off behavior without external nonvolatile memory access is also demonstrated using the fabricated test chip.

Diagnosis of pancreatic adenocarcinoma by detection of human telomerase reverse transcriptase messenger RNA in pancreatic juice with sample qualification

PURPOSE

We evaluated the diagnostic efficacy of detection of human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) message, a catalytic domain of human telomerase, in endoscopic retrograde pancreatography (ERP)-derived pancreatic juice.

EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN

Both hTERT and CD25 expression were detected by reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR) in 17 patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PC), 12 patients with chronic pancreatitis (CP), and 7 patients with no ERP abnormality (N). In the same patients, beta-actin message was semiquantified by competitive RT-PCR. K-ras codon 12 mutations were concomitantly analyzed by enriched PCR-SSCP in 11 and 7 PC and CP cases, respectively.

RESULTS

Expression of hTERT was detected in 88% of PC cases and 17% of CP cases but not in the normal control (N). Alterations in K-ras were detected in 73% of PC cases and 57% of CP cases, respectively. beta-Actin mRNA was expressed in >3.0 x 10(1) copies/microl in all but two PC cases in which hTERT mRNA was not detected. CD25-positive and -negative peripheral lymphocytes were isolated from a normal volunteer using a fluorescent activating cell sorter. The hTERT message was detected in CD25-positive peripheral lymphocytes and in 18, 25, and 0% of the pancreatic juice samples from PC, CP, and N cases, respectively. All CP cases expressing hTERT message were also CD25 positive.

CONCLUSIONS

These results suggest that detection of hTERT mRNA in pancreatic juice is a powerful tool to discriminate PC from CP, particularly when the samples are qualified against beta-actin mRNA levels and contaminating CD25-positive lymphocytes.

Pancreatitis in ulcerative colitis: a case report of improved stricture of the main pancreatic duct

We present one case with pancreatitis that synchronized with manifestations of ulcerative colitis, in which an improvement of stricture of the main pancreatic duct was observed. A 27-year-old man, having a history of nonalcoholic acute pancreatitis, complained of anal bleeding and pain in the epigastric region. The treatment for pancreatitis relieved the pain and decreased the serum levels of pancreatic enzymes to within normal ranges. Colonoscopy and histopathologic examination revealed ulcerative colitis in the rectum, and treatment with steroid enema made proctitis quiescent. Endoscopic retrograde pancreatography demonstrated a remarkable and short stricture of the main pancreatic duct, which improved at follow-up pancreatography. In a 20-month follow-up period, active proctitis relapsed with a episode of recurrent pancreatitis once, and without pancreatitis once.

Selective depletion of neutrophils by a monoclonal antibody, RP-3, suppresses dextran sulphate sodium-induced colitis in rats

Administration of dextran sulphate sodium to animals induces acute colitis characterized by infiltration of large numbers of neutrophils into the colonic mucosa, which histologically resembles human active ulcerative colitis. It has been reported that neutrophils and the reactive oxygen metabolites produced by them are involved in the progress of ulcerative colitis. This study was intended to clarify their roles by using this animal model. First, possible sources and species of reactive oxygen metabolites were determined using luminol-dependent chemiluminescence with addition of enzyme inhibitors and reactive oxygen metabolite scavengers. Next, to examine whether neutrophils and hypochlorous acid derived from them contribute to tissue injury, we administered RP-3, a monoclonal antibody capable of selectively depleting neutrophils, and taurine, a hypochlorous acid scavenger, to rats treated with dextran sulphate sodium. Addition of azide, taurine, catalase, superoxide dismutase and dimethyl sulphoxide into colonic mucosal scrapings significantly inhibited chemiluminescence production, but allopurinol and indomethacin had no effects. These results suggest that excessive hypochlorous acid, hydrogen peroxide, superoxide anion and hydroxyl radical are generated by the inflamed colonic mucosa. Intraperitoneal injections of RP-3 significantly suppressed bleeding, tissue myeloperoxidase activity, chemiluminescence production and erosion formation. On the other hand, administration of taurine tended to inhibit bleeding and erosion formation to some extent, although it could not significantly suppress them. These data suggest that neutrophils play an important role in the development of this colitis and that hypochlorous acid might be one of the causes of tissue injury induced by neutrophils.

Activated immunocompetent cells in rat colitis mucosa induced by dextran sulfate sodium and not complete but partial suppression of colitis by FK506

Administration of dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) solutions to rats induced colitis which resembled mucosal lesions of human ulcerative colitis. Recent reports have shown that some cytokines are related to the pathogenesis of ulcerative colitis. In the present report, we describe the production of two cytokines in colitis mucosa in this DSS model. Using a cytotoxicity assay and a radioimmunoassay, we observed significant increases in levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) in the colitis mucosa and detected interleukin-1 alpha in the mucosa of 3 of 5 DSS rats and an increase in TNF-alpha had a tendency to be inhibited by treatment with FK506. Immunohistochemical investigation of DSS mucosa showed that the number of activated T cells increased at the earlier phase of inflammation. Luminol-dependent chemiluminescence values and myeloperoxidase activities were increased in the late phase of colitis and were suppressed by the FK506 treatment. These findings may support the role of TNF-alpha and T-cell activation in the pathogenesis of DSS colitis.

Dystrophin negative skeletal and myocardial muscle cells in a carrier of Duchenne's muscular dystrophy

A 47-year-old woman whose elder son had typical Duchenne's muscular dystrophy (DMD) was diagnosed as the manifesting carrier of the disease. She had developed congestive heart failure but had no evidence of skeletal muscular atrophy. Histological observation of the cardiac muscle revealed a mosaic pattern of dystrophin negative fibres detected by immunofluorescence analysis.

A case of a female infant with simultaneous occurrence of de novo terminal deletions on chromosome 14q and 20p

This is a case report on an infant with de novo terminal deletions on the long arm of chromosome 14 and on the short arm of chromosome 20 [46, XX, del(14)(q32)del(20)(p11)]. Examination revealed that the infant had a peculiar face, a cleft and high palate, abnormal dentition, butterfly-like vertebral defects, finger anomalies, a simian line on the left hand, talipes equinovarus, deep plantar furrows, abnormally high values of alkali phosphatase and lactate dehydrogenase, mild anemia and psychomotor retardation. Comparing the present case with previously reported cases of a single deletion on chromosome 14q or chromosome 20p, the infant showed some symptomatic and dysmorphic features of both deletions.
