Transportation stress: Impact on behaviour and welfare in meat-type chickens under indian scenario

In order to find standard transport time and its effect on the welfare, 480 marketable commercial broiler chickens (CARIBRO VISHAL; avg. 2.0 kg body weight) were transported for 2, 4, 8h and without transport in crates in three replicates in a completely randomized design. Transport affected welfare as well as behaviour of broiler chickens. Transport stretch impacted the gait score and tonic immobility with maximum aggravation with extended duration. Runaway results shown that 8h group exhibited more run-away time (279.20sec). Number of birds affected by physical injuries increases with the duration. Bodyweight change was significant among transported groups, especially 8h travelled group exhibited more (-8.21%) body weight loss. It is concluded that a transport period of more than 4h in Indian conditions is not recommended as its causing a significant level of stress in the birds leading to stress, production loss and hampering welfare of broilers.

Applications of Gold and Silver Nanoparticles in Theranostics

Nanotechnology sculptures the current scenario of science and technology. The word nano refers 'small' which ranges from 10 to 100 nm in size. Silver and gold nanoparticles can be synthesized at nanoscale and have unique biological properties like antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antiparasitic, antiplatelet, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumor activity. In this mini review, we shall discuss the various applications of silver and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) in the field of therapy, imaging, biomedical devices and in cancer diagnosis. The usage of silver nanoparticles(AgNPs) in dentistry and dental implants, therapeutic abilities like wound dressings, silver impregnated catheters, ventricular drainage catheters, combating orthopedic infections, and osteointegration will be elaborated. Gold nanoparticles in recent years have garnered large importance in bio medical applications. They are being used in diagnosis and have recently seen a surge in therapeutics. In this mini review, we shall see about the various applications of AuNP and AgNP, and highlight their evolution in theranostics.

Association between rheumatoid arthritis and periodontitis in an adult population - A cross sectional study

Background

This investigation was aimed to analyse the existence of an association between rheumatoid arthritis and periodontitis among Indian subjects.

Material and Methods

This observational study included a total of 110 individuals between 18-78 years of age, which were divided equally into RA (Rheumatoid Arthritis) and NRA (Non-Rheumatoid Arthritis) groups. General, Oral and a complete Periodontal examination included recording of Gingival Index (GI), Plaque index (PI), Pocket Probing Depth (PPD), Clinical attachment level (CAL) in a questionnaire form. Laboratory and rheumatologcal parameters like C-reactive protein (CRP), Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and Disease Activity Score 28(DAS 28), Health Assessment Questionnaire–Disability Index (HAQ), Rheumatoid factor (RF) were also respectively estimated.

Results

Prevalence of moderate or severe periodontitis was higher in RA than in NRA group. (41.8% vs 23.6%, p= 0.047). Periodontal structural damage represented by clinical attachment level was more in RA patients (2.89 mm v/s 2.54mm, p=0.261). Mean score of HAQ was co-related significantly in patients with CAL ≥ 2mm than with CAL < 2mm (0.69 v/s 0.455, p=0.0415). Through logistic regression analysis, periodontitis and CAL were related to RA with OR (Odds Ratio) of 2.1 and 2.89 respectively.

Conclusions

Indian RA patients have higher odds for periodontitis and CAL may act as a risk indicator for RA.

Endodontic-periodontal microsurgery for combined endodontic-periodontal lesions: An overview

Endodontic and periodontal microsurgery has surpassed the success rates for traditional endodontic and periodontal surgical procedures. Excellent healing results are being attributed to both the techniques, when employed, for isolated endodontic or periodontal defects. Combined endodontic-periodontal lesions have been referred to as a true challenge, requiring not only endodontic microsurgical management but also concurrent bone grafting and membrane barriers techniques. The prevention of epithelial downgrowth and regeneration of periodontal cementum, fiber, and bone seals the fate of these cases. Achieving primary closure with submergence of grafts has a positive effect on GTR outcome. New techniques of periodontal microsurgery, such as minimally invasive papilla preserving flaps with passive internal mattress suturing, have managed to obtain 90% primary flap closure over grafted sites. Root surface treatment and conditioning has also shown to be beneficial for GTR. Endodontic microsurgery for the combined lesion has not integrated these advances yet. These advances, along with a recently suggested treatment strategy, are ushering in the level next in management of the combined lesions. This article offers an overview of the combined lesion, the disease, its classification, treatment strategy, regenerative tools, microsurgical recommendations, and outcome studies.
