Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The purpose of this article is to review the available strategies to successfully identify and manage ocular surface disease (OSD) pre, intra and post-cataract surgery. RECENT FINDINGS Cataract surgery and OSD have an intricate relationship: the surgical procedure can induce or exaggerate OSD symptoms, while OSD can negatively impact surgical refractive outcomes and increase the rate of postoperative complications. SUMMARY Improving the health and stability ocular surface is the key to enhance post cataract surgery refractive outcomes and avoid complications. This is pivotal for patients affected by severe OSD, but is also important for patients with minimal signs or symptoms. A correct diagnosis and a stepwise approach are the keys to improve the quality of life of such patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is an endoscopic examination of the upper gastrointestinal tract that requires insufflation with gas, leading to intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH). There is evidence suggesting that IAH positively correlates with intracranial pressure (ICP) and possibly with intraocular pressure (IOP). The aim of this study was to examine the effect of a routine screening EGD on the IOP. METHODS In this observational study, 25 patients were recruited; 15 males with a mean age of 50 ± 18 years and 10 females with a mean age of 45 ± 14 years. EGD was conducted under sedation in 21 subjects. Both eyes' IOP measurements were performed using Tonopen Avia in the sitting and left lateral decubitus positions before sedation and the start of EGD, and subsequently in the left lateral decubitus position when the endoscope reached the duodenum (D2) and at the end of the procedure. The final measurement was performed in the sitting position 10 min after the end of the procedure. RESULTS The mean IOP in the sitting position was 15.16 ± 2.27 mmHg, and in the left lateral decubitus position, 15.68 ± 2.82 mmHg. When the gastroscope entered the D2, it was 21.84 ± 6.55 mmHg, at the end of the procedure, 15.80 ± 3.25 mmHg, and 10 min later, 13.12 ± 3.63 mmHg. There was a statistically significant IOP increase when the gastroscope entered the duodenum (p < 0.01). At the end of the gastroscopy, the IOP significantly decreased compared to the one registered when the gastroscope entered the D2 (p < 0.001) and it became similar to the values measured before the EGD, in the same left lateral decubitus position (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION Significant changes in IOP were observed during the EGD. IOP fluctuations during EGD should be taken into account, especially in patients that need repeated EGDs during their life or in patients with glaucoma. Further studies are needed to better understand the short-effect and long-effect influence of an IOP increase in these patients.

Abstract
The use of choroidal vascularization to diagnose and follow-up ocular and systemic pathologies has been consolidated in recent research. Unfortunately, the choroidal parameters can be different depending on the lighting settings of optical coherence tomography (OCT) images. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the brightness of OCT images could influence the measurements of choroidal parameters obtained by processing and analyzing scientific images with the ImageJ program. In this observational, prospective, non-randomized study, 148 eyes of 74 patients with a mean age of 30.7 ± 8.5 years (ranging from 23 to 61 years) were assessed. All patients underwent a complete ophthalmological examination including slit lamp, fundus oculi, ocular biometry, corneal tomography and spectral domain (SD) OCT evaluations of the foveal region in the enhanced depth imaging (EDI) mode. OCT images at two different brightness levels were obtained. The total choroidal area (TCA), choroidal vascularity index (CVI), stromal choroidal area (SCA) and luminal choroidal area (LCA) at both lower and higher brightness levels were measured. To avoid the bias of operator-dependent error, the lower and higher brightness TCAs were obtained using two methods: the manual tracking mode and fixed area. At the two different brightness levels, LCA, SCA and CVI measurements showed statistically significant changes (p < 0.05), whereas the TCA differences were not statistically significant (p > 0.05). According to the results of this study, highlighting that brightness could affect LCA, SCA and CVI parameters, care should be taken during OCT image acquisition.

Abstract
Purpose Retinal angiopathy represents a well-known ocular manifestation of hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (ATTRv). Until recently, there have been no reports on retinal changes in ATTRwt. In this retrospective observational clinical study, we aimed to determine whether vessel density (VD) indices and the choroidal vascularity index (CVI) could offer insights into retinal and choroidal vascular changes among patients affected by ATTRwt. Methods Eighteen patients with a confirmed diagnosis of ATTRwt underwent structural optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA). We established a control group consisting of 16 healthy subjects for statistical comparisons. The 3D OCT and OCTA datasets were analyzed to assess retinal and choroidal thickness and VD. For measuring CVI, we obtained measurements for the total choroid area (TCA), luminal area (LA), and stromal area (SA). Results The mean VD exhibited a statistically significant reduction in the superficial capillary plexus (SCP), deep capillary plexus (DCP), and choriocapillaris (CC) among the ATTRwt group in comparison to the control group (p < 0.0001). Notably, ATTRwt patients displayed decreased choroidal thickness (p = 0.08). Additionally, the median CVI was lower in the ATTRwt group than in the control group (p = 0.04). Conclusion The indices from OCTA and CVI have the potential to serve as non-invasive biomarkers for the quantitative evaluation of retinal and choroidal vascular involvement in patients with ATTRwt.

Abstract
Glaucoma causes the degeneration of the retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and their axons, inducing a tissue reshaping that affects both the retina and the optic nerve head. Glaucoma care especially focuses on reducing intraocular pressure, a significant risk factor for progressive damage to the optic nerve. The use of natural treatments, such as herbs, vitamins, and minerals, is becoming increasingly popular today. While plants are a rich source of novel biologically active compounds, only a small percentage of them have been phytochemically examined and evaluated for their medicinal potential. It is necessary for eye care professionals to inform their glaucoma patients about the therapy, protection, and efficacy of commonly used herbal medicines, considering the widespread use of herbal medicines. The purpose of this review is to examine evidence related to the most widely used herbal medicines for the management and treatment of glaucoma, to better understand the potential benefits of these natural compounds as supplementary therapy.

Abstract
Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a rare neurodegenerative disease. Recently, several retinal layers in PSP compared to healthy controls. were found to be thinner. However, no studies evaluating the correlation between retinal layers and cerebral white matter changes, nor eventual choroidal changes in PSP, have been conducted so far. The goals of the present study were to explore potential differences in choroidal structure between PSP and healthy controls, and to describe the relationship between retinal layers' thickness and volume, using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and age-related white matter change scores (ARWMC) using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain. Choroidal structures of 26 PSP patients and 26 healthy controls using standard SD-OCT with an enhanced depth imaging (EDI) approach were analyzed; then, retinal the structures of 16 of these PSP patients using standard SD-OCT were examined; finally, the same patients underwent brain MRI, and their cerebral white matter changes were calculated. Non-statistically significant differences between PSP patients' and healthy controls' choroidal structure were found. On the contrary, PSP patients' inner retinal layers (INR), retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE) and all retinal layers' thicknesses in the macular region were found to be significantly correlated with ARWMC, independently from age and axial length (AL). PSP patients' neurological alterations go hand in hand with retinal ones, independently from age and axial length. Our results suggest a mutual relationship between cerebral and retinal structure pathological alterations. On the other hand, no significant differences in the choroidal evaluation compared to healthy controls have been found.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to evaluate choroidal thickness (ChT) at the subfoveal and peripheral level after the instillation of 0.5% tropicamide + 10% phenylephrine 9 hydrochloride eye drops by using OCT scans in enhanced depth image (EDI) mode. In total, 53 patients (30 males and 23 females) were involved, and the mean age was 25.62 ± 2.41 (age range: 23-36). The dominant eye was treated with tropicamide + phenylephrine (Visumidriatic Fenil 100 mg/mL + 5 mg/mL, Visufarma) while the nondominant eye was used as the control. An OCT analysis was performed on both eyes before and 30 min after the instillation of a drop of mydriatic in the dominant eye. The ChT was measured by using the OCT software measurement tool (Spectralis; Heidelberg Engineering; Heidelberg, Germany, version 6.0). The results showed a statistically significant ChT decrease (p = 0.009) in the temporal sector after the treatment with tropicamide + phenylephrine. In the subfoveal and nasal sectors, no statistically significant ChT changes were detected (p = 0.94; p = 0.85) following the administration of the mydriatic eye drops. The ChT thinning in the temporal sector following the instillation of the tropicamide + phenylephrine eye drops suggests that in the case of ChT studies, mydriatic administration should be avoided.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Comparing intraocular pressure (IOP) changes (ΔIOP) between obese subjects and non-obese controls in relation to different positions: standing, sitting, supine. METHODS the IOP was measured in both obese patients and non-obese controls groups with Tono-Pen AVIA in different positions following this sequence: after 5 min (5') in the standing position, sitting, supine, supine after 5 min (supine 5') and immediately after standing. ΔIOP values obtained comparing all positions were, therefore, evaluated. RESULTS 92 eyes of 46 obese subjects aged between 18 and 59 years (mean 38.07 ± 11.51 years) and of a Body Mass Index (BMI) between 31.84 and 60.65 (mean 41.84 ± 7.05) were evaluated. A total of 48 eyes of 24 non-obese controls aged between 23 and 55 (mean 35.21 ± 11.96 years) and of a BMI between 18.20 and 26.79 (mean 21.04 ± 2.36) were also recruited. In obese subjects, there were statistically significant differences between the IOP in the supine position and the supine positions 5' with all other IOP measurements (p < 0.05). There were statistically significant differences between ΔIOP in both supine positions and prolonged standing positions obtained by obese subjects and non-obese controls (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS In obese subjects, there is a statistically significant increase in IOP in the supine positions that is significantly greater than the non-obese population. BMI is weakly correlated with IOP and ΔIOP in postural changes.

Abstract
This retrospective comparative study proposes a multi-formula approach by comparing no-history IOL power calculation methods after myopic laser-refractive-surgery (LRS). One-hundred-thirty-two eyes of 132 patients who had myopic-LRS and cataract surgery were examined. ALMA, Barrett True-K (TK), Ferrara, Jin, Kim, Latkany and Shammas methods were evaluated in order to back-calculate refractive prediction error (PE). To eliminate any systematic error, constant optimization through zeroing-out the mean error (ME) was performed for each formula. Median absolute error (MedAE) and percentage of eyes within ±0.50 and ±1.00 diopters (D) of PE were analyzed. PEs were plotted with corresponding mean keratometry (K), axial length (AL), and AL/K ratio; then, different ranges were evaluated. With optimized constants through zeroing-out ME (90 eyes), ALMA was better when K ≤ 38.00 D-AL > 28.00 mm and when 38.00 D < K ≤ 40.00 D-26.50 mm < AL ≤ 29.50 mm; Barrett-TK was better when K ≤ 38.00 D-AL ≤ 26.50 mm and when K > 40.00 D-AL ≤ 28.00 mm or AL > 29.50 mm; and both ALMA and Barrett-TK were better in other ranges. (p < 0.05) Without modified constants (132 eyes), ALMA was better when K > 38.00 D-AL ≤ 29.50 mm and when 36.00 < K ≤ 38.00 D-AL ≤ 26.50 mm; Barrett-TK was better when K ≤ 36.00 D and when K ≤ 38.00 D with AL > 29.50 mm; and both ALMA and Barrett-TK were better in other ranges (p < 0.05). A multi-formula approach, according to different ranges of K and AL, could improve refractive outcomes in post-myopic-LRS eyes.

Abstract
More than two years after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare providers are facing an emergency within an emergency, the so-called long COVID or post-COVID-19 syndrome (PCS). Patients diagnosed with PCS develop an extended range of persistent symptoms and/or complications from COVID-19. The risk factors and clinical manifestations are many and various. Advanced age, sex/gender, and pre-existing conditions certainly influence the pathogenesis and course of this syndrome. However, the absence of precise diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers may further complicate the clinical management of patients. This review aimed to summarize recent evidence on the factors influencing PCS, possible biomarkers, and therapeutic approaches. Older patients recovered approximately one month earlier than younger patients, with higher rates of symptoms. Fatigue during the acute phase of COVID-19 appears to be an important risk factor for symptom persistence. Female sex, older age, and active smoking are associated with a higher risk of developing PCS. The incidence of cognitive decline and the risk of death are higher in PCS patients than in controls. Complementary and alternative medicine appears to be associated with improvement in symptoms, particularly fatigue. The heterogeneous nature of post-COVID symptoms and the complexity of patients with PCS, who are often polytreated due to concomitant clinical conditions, suggest a holistic and integrated approach to provide useful guidance for the treatment and overall management of long COVID.

Abstract
Corneal refractive surgery (CRS) currently is widely used to correct refractive errors because of its efficacy and reliability. Several studies dealt with the corneal modification induced by this type of surgery, but it is still debated if CRS can induce unexpected changes namely anterior chamber depth (ACD) and axial length (AL). A literature review was performed, including all articles regarding CRS and eye-variations from 1999 to December 2021. Excluding articles about specific systemic conditions (e.g., pregnancy), pathological conditions, post-surgical complications or about only corneal flattening and thinning post CRS, we found nine studies that met the search criteria. We divided the found articles according to the type of surgery performed (radial keratotomy, PRK/LASEK, lasik) and analyzed the results about ACD and AL. Finally, according to the literature, we can conclude that CRS not only gives a corneal flattening, thinning and biomechanical changes, but also induces AL and ACD decrease. This makes the AL and ACD measurements obtained before CRS uselessness in case of IOL power calculation.

Abstract
To verify the influence of axial length (AL) variations after cataract surgery in IOL power calculation. Patients underwent ophthalmic evaluation before surgery, including optical biometry with IOLMaster 500. Same exams were repeated 2 months after surgery: AL of operated eye was evaluated using two modes (pseudophakic/aphakic options). Mean Keratometry and AL changes were analyzed. Furthermore, refractive prediction error (PE) was back-calculated with Barrett Universal-II, Hoffer-Q, Holladay-1 and SRK/T formulas. To eliminate any systematic error, the mean error (ME) was zeroed-out for each formula. MEs and median absolute errors (MedAEs) of PEs were analyzed. Two-hundred-one operated eyes of 201 patients and 201 opposite eyes were evaluated. In operated eyes, mean AL difference was - 0.11 ± 0.07 mm (p < 0.001) with pseudophakic option and 0.00 ± 0.07 mm (p = 0.922) with aphakic option. There were not-statistically significant differences between MedAE of PEs calculated after zeroing-out the ME with different ALs (p > 0.05). Instead, only MEs of PEs obtained with postoperative ALs-pseudophakic option were not-statistically different from zero (p > 0.05). AL measurement change after cataract surgery is probably due to a systematic error in optical biometer in case of phakic eyes. A correction factor applied to preoperative AL could eliminate any systematic error in IOL power calculation without modifying the lens constant.

Abstract
Background: To evaluate the interocular optic nerve diameter (ONDs) asymmetry in patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) utilizing the A-scan ultrasound technique. Methods: Thirty-seven patients diagnosed with IIH were recruited from outpatients referred to the University Eye Unit between June 2014 and December 2021. Patients with optic disc pseudoedema or edema caused by other conditions were excluded. All patients with negative neuroimaging for intracranial space-occupying masses underwent standardized A-scan measurement of the OND in the primary gaze and lateral position (30 degrees test). Results: Mean, median, standard deviation, the minimum and maximum value of the two eyes at 0 degrees and the difference between the left and right thicker and thinner ONDs were measured. The two-tailed paired student t-test between the two eyes was performed using SPSS software. A statistically significant difference (p-value <0.001) between the two eyes, without a side prevalence, was found. Conclusions: Due to the differences between the ONDs of both eyes, we propose to use the mean of the ONDs between the left and right eyes at 0 degrees with the standardized A-scan diagnostic technique for a better follow-up of patients with IIH.

Abstract
Myotonic Dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is the most common muscular dystrophy in adults, affecting 1:8000 individuals. It is a multi-systemic disorder involving muscle, heart, endocrine and respiratory apparatus and eye. The eye symptoms can include ptosis, external ophthalmoplegia, epiphora, and early onset cataracts. Cataracts occur at a much earlier age (usually between 30 and 40) than the general population, where females are usually affected more than men. We studied gender differences in cataract prevalence and treatment age in 243 DM1 patients (134 M; 109 F), aged 18 to 70 years, who were subsequently screened at routine follow-up. For each patient, information was collected on age, sex, CTG expansion, age of cataract onset, and age at cataract surgery, when available. Seventy-three patients, 30 females and 43 males, had cataracts, at a mean age of onset of 41.14 ± 12.64 in females, and 40.36 ± 10.03 in males. Sixty-nine of them underwent cataract surgery, males at an earlier age than females (42.8 ± 9.8 years versus 47.3 ± 12.6 years) and in 52.5% of cases before the age of 40, compared to 17.2% of females. The difference was statistically significant. The assumption that females in general and those with DM1 in particular develop cataracts more frequently and earlier than males is not confirmed, at least in this study. A possible explanation for these results could be related to non-advanced age, the protective role of estrogen and the lower prevalence of smoking in the study population.

Abstract
Ultrasonographic appraisal of the optic nerve sheath diameter has become popular in recent years as a useful diagnostic tool to detect intracranial pressure variations. Intracranial hypertension is a life-threatening disease with possible poor clinical outcomes and can be caused by a variety of neurological and non-neurological conditions. Considering the latter, increases in intracranial pressure have also been described during several surgical procedures. Ocular ultrasonography might be utilized to identify intracranial pressure increases by evaluating optic nerve sheath diameter variations. The aim of this review is to provide a wide overview on the use of the optic nerve ultrasound evaluation to detect intracranial pressure changes during surgical procedures, also discussing the pitfalls of the B-scan technique, the most widely used for such a purpose. PubMed medical database, Web of Science and Scopus were used to carry out this review. The present review showed that ocular ultrasonography could be considered a valuable diagnostic tool in the surgical setting to indirectly assess intracranial pressure. However, the use of the B-scan ultrasound should always be coupled with the standardized A-scan technique for a more accurate, precise and trustworthy ultrasound assessment.

Abstract
HSV-1 can be associated with severe and recurrent eye infections characterized by a strong inflammatory response that leads to blepharoconjunctivitis, epithelial and stromal keratitis, and retinal necrosis. The incidence of HSV-1 keratitis is 1.5 million every year worldwide, including more than 40,000 new cases exhibiting serious visual failures. Generally, the therapy uses antiviral drugs to promote healing; however, there are currently no compounds that are able to completely eradicate the virus. In addition, the phenomenon of resistance is rapidly spreading among HSV-1 strains, creating mutants developing resistance to the common antiviral drugs; therefore, deep research on this issue is warranted. The efficacy of different ophthalmic solutions already on the market was evaluated for reducing HSV-1 infection. Different plaque assays were set up on epithelial cells, revealing that two ophthalmic solutions were able to inhibit viral replication in the early stages of infection. The data were further confirmed by molecular tests analyzing the expression levels of the principal genes involved in HSV-1 infection, and a strong reduction was observed after only 1 min of eye-drop treatment. Collectively, these results suggested the use of ophthalmic solutions as potential antiviral options for the treatment of ocular herpetic infection.

Abstract
In recent years, the measurement of optic nerve sheath diameter with ultrasound to detect the presence of increased intracranial pressure has widely spread. It can be qualitatively and effectively used to identify intracranial hypertension. Intracranial pressure can rise due to acute injury, cerebral bleeding, hydrocephalus, brain tumors and other space-occupying abnormalities, and it is linked to a high death rate. The purpose of this review is to give a general overview of the most relevant scientific publications on ultrasonographic evaluation of the optic nerve in case of brain injuries published in the last 30 years, as well as to analyze the limits of the most extensively used B-scan approach. Fifty-two papers chosen from the PubMed medical database were analyzed in this review. Our findings revealed that ocular ultrasound is an useful diagnostic tool in the management of intracranial hypertension when it exceeds a certain value or after head trauma. As a result, an ultrasound of the optic nerve can be extremely helpful in guiding diagnosis and treatment. The blooming effect is one of the most critical restrictions to consider when using B-scan ultrasonography. Since amplitude-scan ultrasound, also known as A-scan, does not have this limit, these two diagnostic techniques should always be used together for a more full, accurate, and trustworthy ultrasound examination, ensuring more data objectivity.

Abstract
Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is a disease with a heterogeneity of possible causes, which needs to be quickly diagnosed. Ocular ultrasonography could be considered a useful tool to diagnose this condition in a fast and non-invasive way. In fact, Karl Ossoinig had already proposed this diagnostic tool in the 1970s for the evaluation of intracranial pressure changes under several pathological conditions, including idiopathic intracranial hypertension. The aim of this review is to analyze scientific articles published in the last 30 years concerning the use of ocular ultrasonography to assess optic nerve indices in patients with idiopathic intracranial hypertension. Specifically, 15 published articles found in PubMed database were included and analyzed in the present review. Our conclusion suggests that ocular ultrasonography is a reliable diagnostic technique to be utilized in all the cases of suspected raised intracranial pressure. To obtain the best possible accuracy and precision in the least invasive way, standardized A-scan seems to be the best choice.

Abstract
This observational case-control study evaluated the anterior ocular segment parameters of patients with celiac disease with a Scheimpflug imaging system and compared them with those of a healthy controls group, highlighting potential differences related to the underlying pathogenetic mechanisms of the disease. Seventy celiac patients and 70 healthy subjects were assessed with a comprehensive ophthalmological evaluation, including clinical history, Snellen best-corrected visual acuity, axial length (AL) measurements with IOLMaster, and anterior segment tomographic evaluation with Pentacam HR. The measurements of all keratometry values, astigmatism, steep axis, anterior and posterior Q value (asphericity), pupil diameter, pupil center, corneal apex, the thinnest point, corneal volume, anterior chamber depth from the epithelium, anterior chamber depth from endothelium, anterior chamber volume, and iridocorneal angle were also appraised. The two study groups were comparable and similar for gender, age, and AL, with no statistically significant differences regarding all analyzed tomographic parameters. Thus, ocular anterior segment parameters of celiac patients are not significantly different from those of healthy subjects, suggesting no underlying pathogenetic implications of celiac disease affecting the assessed structures. Nevertheless, a routine ophthalmological examination for all celiac patients should be recommended throughout their lifetimes due to the potential ocular manifestations of the disease.

The aim of the present study is to check the relationship between virus detection on the conjunctival swabs by RT-PCR and the systemic and ocular clinical data, treatments, and to the modalities of administration of supplemental oxygen. The SARS-CoV-2 RNA reverse-transcriptase PCR assay of conjunctival brushing samples and the corneal/conjunctival clinical findings were evaluated in 18 eyes of 9 consecutive patients admitted to the COVID-19 Sub-intensive Unit of Salerno Hospital University, Italy. Conjunctival swabs were positive for SARS-CoV-2 in 13 eyes of 7 patients; corneal epithelial defects were detected in 9 eyes. The seven patients with ocular involvement from SARS-CoV-2 had undergone treatment with a full-face mask or oxygen helmet in the last week, while the two subjects with negative conjunctival swabs had been treated with high flow nasal cannula. The positivity to the conjunctival test for SARS-CoV-2 was higher (72%) than that reported in the literature (10–15%) and related in all cases to the use of facial respiratory devices. These results suggest that exposure of unprotected eyes to aerosols containing high concentrations of SARS-CoV-2 could cause a keratoconjunctival viral infection. Further studies are needed to verify the causal link with the use of respiratory facial devices in patients suffering from COVID-19 pneumonia.

Abstract
In recent years, ultrasonographic measurement of the optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) has been widely used to identify the presence of increased intracranial pressure (ICP). Intracranial hypertension is a life-threatening condition that can be caused by various neurological and non-neurological disorders, and it is associated to poor clinical results. Ultrasonography could be used to qualitatively and efficiently detect ICP increases, but to reach this purpose, clear cut-off values are mandatory. The aim of this review is to provide a wide overview of the most important scientific publications on optic nerve ultrasound normal values assessment published in the last 30 years. A total of 42 articles selected from PubMed medical database was included in this review. Our analysis showed that ocular ultrasonography is considered to be a valuable diagnostic tool, especially when intracranial hypertension is suspected, but unfortunately this research provided conflicting results that could be due to the different ultrasound protocols. This is mainly caused by the use of B scan alone, which presents several limitations. The use of B-scan coupled with the standardized A-scan approach could give more accurate, and reliable ultrasound evaluation, assuring higher data objectivity.

Abstract
In 2020, a global pandemic was declared following the spread of SARS-CoV-2, the pathogen responsible for COVID-19. The risk of infection is high due to the ease of transmission, which can occur orally, through droplets, or via contact with contaminated surfaces and objects. It has also been demonstrated that the ocular surface can constitute a transmission route, especially in hospital settings, where health care workers can become a dangerous source of infection. In order to increase prevention and reduce the spread of the virus on the ocular surface, the antiviral activity of already-marketed eye drops against SARS-CoV-2 was evaluated. Iodim, Ozodrop, Septavis, and Dropsept were tested against SARS-CoV-2 in plaque-assay experiments at different stimulation times. Furthermore, the expression levels of early and late genes were evaluated through molecular assays. Results indicated that three of the four ophthalmic solutions showed a considerable dose-dependent inhibition of viral replication, highlighting their use as potential antiviral drugs against SARS-CoV-2 and preventing other ocular infections.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare different methods in calculating the corneal radius (R) to be used in case of intraocular lens power calculations when it is immeasurable. METHODS The right eyes of 1,960 patients were randomly divided into 2 equal groups. The first group of right eyes (group A) was divided in three groups according to the axial length (AL) (≤21.99 mm, between 22 and 24.99 mm, and ≥25 mm). In these groups, the correlation between the AL and the corneal radius (R) provided three different regression formulas. The second group of right eyes (group B) was used to test the following methods of estimating the R: the regression formulas determined from group A, formula from Logan et al., formula from Stenström, the mean R calculated from group A, and the fellow eye group B. A Student paired T test was used for the statistical evaluation. RESULTS In case of AL≤21.99, the best results have been obtained with the fellow eye R, followed by either the regression formula or the mean R from group A (mean=0.00±0.09 mm, P=0.94, mean=0.05±0.21 mm, P=0.05, mean=0.05±0.22 mm, P=0.08, respectively). In case of AL between 22 and 24.99 mm, the best results have been obtained with the fellow eye R, followed by either the regression formula or the mean R from group A (mean=-0.01±0.09 mm, P=0.38, mean=0.01±0.21 mm, P=0.12, mean=0.01±0.24 mm, P=0.18, respectively). In case of AL≥25 mm, the best results have been obtained with the fellow eye R, followed by either the regression formula or the mean R from group A (mean=-0.003±0.08 mm, P=0.94 mean=-0.004±0.25 mm, P=0.85, mean=-0.004±0.25 mm, P=0.85, respectively). CONCLUSIONS The new calculated regression formulas seem to represent a reliable method to calculate the R when it is undetectable, as in case of corneal dystrophies.

Abstract
Oral pathogens have been identified in bioptic specimens from Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) patients, and alveolar bone loss has been related to ARMD. Therefore, the possible association between ARMD and periodontal disease was investigated in the present case-control study, evaluating clinical and radiographic periodontal parameters, primarily, in cases vs. controls and, secondarily, in relation to ARMD risk factors, in cases, to highlight a possible pathogenic link between the disorders. Forty ARMD cases and 40 non-ARMD controls, matched for age (±3 years) and gender and homogeneous for ARMD risk factors, therefore comparable, underwent full-mouth periodontal charting, panoramic radiograph, and medical data, including ARMD risk factors, collection. Statistical analysis was conducted using the language R. Comparisons between groups were made using both traditional t-tests and Yuen’s test with bootstrap calibration. Enrolled subjects were ≥55 years old, and 50 females and 30 males were equally distributed among the two groups. No statistically significant difference was found in clinical and radiographic periodontal parameters in cases vs. controls. In the case group, no differences were found when relating the periodontal parameters to ARMD risk factors, except for Clinical Attachment Level values that were statistically significantly higher in hypertensive ARMD subjects. A possible association between periodontal disease and ARMD may be hypothesized in hypertensive ARMD subjects, with hypertension as a possible pathogenic link between the disorders.

Abstract
Purpose To evaluate the correlation between corneal thickness (CT) measurements obtained with two Scheimpflug devices, Pentacam HR and Precisio, and to elaborate, if necessary, a regression formula which could make these results comparable. Design Retrospective, Comparative, Observational study. Setting Department of Medicine, Surgery and Dentistry, “Scuola Medica Salernitana” University of Salerno, Italy Methods One hundred twenty four healthy eyes of 124 volunteers (65 males; range: 20–32 years; mean age of 24.8 ± 1.7) were included in this study. CT was measured using Pentacam HR and Precisio in three different points: the pupil center (PC), the corneal apex (CA) and the thinnest point (TP). Results CT obtained with both devices at the PC, at the CA and at the TP showed a good correlation (r = 0.97, r = 0.97, r = 0.97, respectively), but Pentacam HR measurements were significantly thicker than those provided by Precisio (p < 0.01). The differences between Pentacam HR and Precisio were 21.9 ± 8.8 μm at the PC, 21.9 ± 8.9 μm at the CA, 19.1 ± 9.0 μm at the TP. The calculated regression formulas were: y = 0.9558x + 2.3196 for the PC, y = 0.9519x + 4.5626 for the CA, y = 0.9364x + 15.436 for the TP, where x is the CT measured with Pentacam HR and y is the Precisio measurement. Conclusions The findings provided by this study highlight that Precisio measures thinner corneas compared to Pentacam HR. The identified regression formulas could be utilized to make interchangeable the results obtained with these two devices.

Abstract
Myopia is one of the main risk factors for the onset of open-angle glaucoma. One of the first steps to assess glaucoma occurrence is the measurement of the intraocular pressure (IOP) by the Goldmann applanation tonometry (GAT). Even if this device is considered to be the gold standard for such measurements, it is affected by several sources of errors. Among these, there are the corneal thickness and curvature, both modified by corneal refractive surgery (CRS), that nowadays has become a very popular method to treat refractive errors. Indeed, CRS, by modifying the corneal shape and structure, causes an underestimation of the IOP measurements. In the literature, several IOP correction formulas to utilize with different devices have been proposed to overcome this problem. This paper aims to review the various correction formulas applied to the GAT in the attempt to improve the reliability of this measurement.

Abstract
Myotonic dystrophy (DM1) is the most common muscle disease in adults, affecting approximately 1:8000 individuals, characterized by myotonia and muscular wasting and a multisystemic involvement that includes heart, brain, respiratory and endocrine system, and eye. Conduction system is selectively involved, often causing cardiac sudden death. Early onset posterior subcapsular cataract is a characteristic feature of myotonic dystrophy, requiring surgical treatment. However, DM1 is associated with many anesthetic hazards; sensitivity to anesthetic drugs, especially muscle relaxants and opioids, may complicate postoperative care. Local anesthesia also requires attention. We investigated the heart response to local anesthesia Ropivacaine Hcl administration in 16 DM1 patients (12M:4F) consecutively undergoing cataract surgery, by analyzing heart rate, ventricular and supraventricular ectopic beats, runs of tachycardia and pauses ≥ 2.5 sec., through a 24h-Holter monitoring, registered before and within 24 hours after surgery. The average age of patients was 47.4 years (range 30.2-55.9). At baseline, one patient had a pacemaker and 3 a defibrillator. Two patients presented a first-degree atrio-ventricular-block; three showed ectopic ventricular beats, on anti-arrhythmic drug treatment. No significant differences in heart rate values (73 ± 15b/m versus 76 ± 13b/m) were observed after cataract surgery, nor in the onset of ectopic beats. Only patients who presented ventricular ectopic beats at baseline, showed an increase in their number after surgery, likely related to an arbitrary interruption of the specific treatment. These data confirm the safety and efficacy of ropivacaine HCl used as a local anesthetic in patients with myotonic dystrophy.
