Assessing silvopasture management as a strategy to reduce fuel loads and mitigate wildfire risk

Managing private forests for wildfire resilience is challenging due to conflicting social, economic, and ecological decisions that may result in an increase of surface fuel loads leading to greater fire risk. Due to fire suppression and a changing climate, land managers in fire-prone regions face an increasing threat of high severity fires. Thus, land managers need fuel treatment options that match their forest types and management objectives. One potential option for producers that graze livestock is silvopasture management, where livestock, forages, and overstory vegetation are carefully managed for co-benefits on the same unit of land. This study compared forest composition and structure, fuel types, and vegetative biomass between silvopasture and non-grazed managed forests in Washington, U.S. We show that silvopasture management results in reductions in grass biomass, litter, and duff depth when compared to non-grazed managed forest. These findings point to the integrated nature of silvopasture, where management of overstory composition and structure, understory vegetation, and grazing can reduce fuel loads and potential wildfire risk.

The value of values-based supply chains: farmer perspective

In the last few decades, the emergence of mid-scale, intermediated marketing channels that fall between commodity and direct markets has attracted growing interest from scholars for their potential to preserve small and mid-sized farms while scaling up alternative agrifood sourcing. When such mid-scale supply chains are formed among multiple business partners with shared ethics or values related to the qualities of the food and the business relationships along the supply chain, they may be termed "values-based supply chains (VBSCs)." Most of the research on VBSCs to date has relied primarily on a case study approach that investigates the performance of VBSCs from the perspective of VBSC founders or leaders. In contrast, this research seeks out the perspectives of farmers who participate in VBSCs. A nationwide farmer survey conducted in 2017 offers original insights on farmer motivations for participating in VBSCs and how they are being used by farmers relative to other marketing channels. We find that VBSCs serve farms of all sizes. Overall, smaller farms were more likely to market a higher percentage of overall sales through their VBSC and more likely to rank their VBSC as one of the top three marketing channels in their portfolio. But it was the larger farms that were more likely to perceive VBSC-specific benefits. Our findings confirm that while there is a limited volume of product that such regional supply chains can currently handle, farmers view VBSCs as a valuable marketing option that aligns with their own values and preserves their product's identity.

Fortification of human milk: evaluation of a novel fortification scheme and of a new fortifier

Human milk fed to very-low-birth-weight infants must be fortified with protein, minerals, and vitamins. We tested a new fortification regimen in which the amount of fortifier was adjusted on the basis of frequent determinations of serum urea nitrogen (SUN). A newly formulated fortifier based on bovine milk proteins was employed either in the new fashion (regimen ADJ) or in the conventional fixed proportion (regimen FIX). Using the fixed proportion, the study also compared the new fortifier with a fortifier based on human milk protein (regimen HMP). Twelve infants were studied with each of the three regimens; nearly all completed 3 weeks of study. Protein intake was generally higher in ADJ than FIX; the difference was significant (p < 0.01) during week 2. Weight gain was somewhat (but not significantly) greater in regimen ADJ (32.3 g/d or 18.8 g/kg/d) than in regimen FIX (30.0 g/d or 18.3 g/kg/d). SUN was higher in ADJ than in FIX, and several other serum chemical values (calcium, phosphorus, potassium) tended to be higher, probably reflecting higher intakes of these nutrients with ADJ than with FIX. Plasma concentrations of several amino acids were higher in ADJ than FIX, but none, including threonine, were outside the physiological range. In comparing regimen FIX to regimen HMP, infants on FIX received similar intakes of protein and showed slightly but not significantly more rapid weight gain. Concentrations of SUN were lower with FIX, but other serum chemical values, including amino acids, were generally similar to HMP. We conclude that use of the new adjustable fortification regimen is feasible and safe and that it should be studied further. It produced the expected increases in nutrient intakes and growth. The new bovine milk-based fortifier appears to be equivalent to the human milk-based fortifier.

Air bag injuries and occupant protection

Analysis of the investigations of crashes involving automobiles equipped with air bags verifies the estimations of the lifesaving and injury reduction benefits of this supplemental restraint system. Cases of air bag-associated injuries, primarily erythema, abrasions, and contusions of the lower face and anterior throat-upper chest, are identified as those most often observed. Corneal-scleral injuries were infrequently noted but are rarely found in crashes involving air bag deployments.

Zinc profiles in rheumatoid arthritis

Evidence has accumulated which suggests that zinc may play an important role in immune function and inflammation. In this study we examined the zinc status in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), osteoarthritis, other rheumatic diseases and healthy controls. Results indicate that serum and plasma zinc levels are decreased significantly in patients with RA. Reduced zinc values may be due to decreased albumin-bound and micromolecular protein-bound zinc.
