Abstract
Acrylamide (ACR) is a colorless, odorless, and water-soluble solid molecule. In addition to being an important industrial material, ACR is found in fried and baked carbohydrate-rich foods. ACR is regarded as a typical axonal neurotoxin that induces neuropathy. The brain is protected from oxidative damage by vitamin E, which is regarded as the most powerful fat-soluble antioxidant vitamin. This study aimed to reveal the toxic effect of ACR on the development of myelin in the brain at the molecular level and to examine whether Vitamin E has a neuroprotective effect on the harmful effect of ACR. The study was started by dividing 40 pregnant rats into 4 groups and after lactation, the study was continued with offspring rats (females and males offspring rats) from each group. Offspring rats were equally divided into Control, Vitamin E, ACR, ACR + Vitamin E groups. Following the ACR administration, the Water Maze test was applied to evaluate cognitive function. To evaluate the level of demyelination and remyelination, MBP, MAG, and MOG proteins and mRNA levels were performed. In addition, the degeneration of myelin and glial cells was examined by immunohistochemistry and electron microscopic analysis. Analysis results showed that ACR administration decreased gene and protein levels of myelin-related proteins MBP, MAG, and MOG. The findings were confirmed by histopathological, immunohistochemical, and microscopic examinations. The application of vitamin E improved this negative effect of ACR. It has been observed that ACR may play a role in the pathogenesis of myelin-related neurodegenerative diseases by causing demyelination during gestation, lactation, and post-lactation. In addition, it has been understood that vitamin E supports myelination as a strong neuroprotective vitamin against the toxicity caused by ACR. Our research results suggest that acrylamide may play a role in the etiopathogenesis of demyelinating diseases such as multiple sclerosis in humans since fast-food-type nutrition is very common today and people are chronically exposed to acrylamide.

Abstract
Acrylamide (ACR), a toxin present in fried and baked carbohydrate-rich foods, is known to cause liver and kidney damage. This study aimed to investigate the mechanisms of oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis that contribute to liver and kidney damage induced by chronic administration of ACR. Additionally, the effectiveness of vitamin E in mitigating these toxic effects was examined. The study initially involved dividing 40 pregnant rats into four groups. After lactation, the research continued with male offspring rats from each group. The offspring rats were divided into Control, Vitamin E, ACR, and ACR + Vitamin E groups. Following ACR administration, liver and kidney function tests were performed on serum samples. Biochemical analyses, evaluation of inflammation markers, histopathological examination, and assessment of protein levels of Akt/IκBα/NF-κB, Bax, Bcl-xL, and Caspase-9 were conducted on liver and kidney tissues. The analysis demonstrated that ACR adversely affected liver and kidney function, resulting in oxidative stress, increased inflammation, and elevated apoptotic markers. Conversely, administration of vitamin E positively impacted these parameters, restoring them to control levels. Based on the results, the mechanism of ACR's action on oxidative stress and inflammation-induced liver and kidney damage may be associated with the activation of apoptotic markers such as Bax and Caspase-9, as well as the Akt/IκBα/NF-κB signaling pathway. Consequently, the protective properties of vitamin E establish it as an essential vitamin for the prevention or mitigation of various ACR-induced damages.

Abstract
Acrylamide (ACR) is a toxic chemical frequently encountered in daily life, posing health risks. This study aimed to elucidate the molecular-level mechanism of ACR's toxic effects on testicles and investigate whether Vitamin E can mitigate these effects. A total of 40 adult pregnant rats were utilized, divided into four groups: Control, ACR, Vitamin E, and ACR + Vitamin E. ACR and Vitamin E were administered to the mother rats during pregnancy and lactation, and to the male offspring until the 8th week post-birth. Serum hormone levels, oxidant-antioxidant parameters, histopathological examination of testicular tissue, and mRNA and protein levels of the testicular and liver aromatase gene were analyzed. Spermiogram analysis was conducted on the collected sperm samples from the male offspring. The results revealed that ACR exposure adversely affected hormone levels, oxidant-antioxidant parameters, histological findings, as well as aromatase gene and protein expressions. However, Vitamin E administration effectively prevented the toxic effects of ACR. These findings demonstrate that ACR application significantly impairs the reproductive performance of male offspring rats by increasing liver aromatase activity.

Abstract
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited hemoglobin disorder characterized by the occlusion of small blood vessels by sickle-shaped red blood cells. SCD is associated with a number of complications, including ischemic priapism. While SCD accounts for at least one-third of all priapism cases, no definitive treatment strategy has been established to specifically treat patients with SC priapism. The aim of this systematic review was to assess the efficacy and safety of contemporary treatment modalities for acute and stuttering ischemic priapism associated with SCD. The primary outcome measures were defined as resolution of acute priapism (detumescence) and complete response of stuttering priapism, while the primary harm outcome was as sexual dysfunction. The protocol for the review has been registered (PROSPERO Nr: CRD42020182001), and a systematic search of Medline, Embase, and Cochrane controlled trials databases was performed. Three trials with 41 observational studies met the criteria for inclusion in this review. None of the trials assessed detumescence, as a primary outcome. All of the trials reported a complete response of stuttering priapism; however, the certainty of the evidence was low. It is clear that assessing the effectiveness of specific interventions for priapism in SCD, well-designed, adequately-powered, multicenter trials are strongly required.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Adults with end-stage of chronic liver diseases have lower antibody titers after hepatitis-B vaccination. We have less amount of knowledge about the effect of non-viral cause chronic liver fibrosis on vaccination. In this study, we investigated the effect of non-viral chronic liver fibrosis on hepatitis B vaccine and the effect of tetanous toxoid co-administration at the level of humoral and cellular immune responses in an experimental model. METHODS Hepatitis B vaccine was administered either alone or in combination with tetanus toxoid in thioacetamide-induced fibrotic BALB/c mice. Fibrosis level was determined by Knodell scoring. Anti-HBsAg, biochemical parameters, inflammatory (IL-1β, TNF-α), and anti-inflammatory (IL-10) cytokine levels were investigated in serum samples by automated systems and ELISA; respectively. Frequencies of activated lymphocytes were determined in flow cytometer. RESULTS Antibody titers significantly decreased after immunization of fibrotic mice. However, co-administration of toxoid significantly elevated antibody titer. The percentage of CD19+CD69+ B lymphocytes was found to be lower in vaccinated fibrotic group compared to vaccinated naive group. Simultaneous administration of toxoid significantly increased the frequencies of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells expressing CD69 and CD127. Interestingly, CD19+CD5+CD1high Breg cells were significantly reduced in the group vaccinated with hepatitis B vaccine and toxoid, simultaneously. The reduction in Breg percentage did not expose a significant decrease in the level of IL-10. CONCLUSION Non-viral chronic liver fibrosis causes a reduction on specific antibody level after vaccination. Reduction on Breg cell frequency may have an effect on elevation of antibody level after co-administration of tetanus toxoid.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neonatal cholestasis is caused by a group of diseases that cause jaundice, which can be encountered in the neonatal period. Biliary atresia (BA) and idiopathic neonatal hepatitis (INH) are among neonatal cholestasis diseases. AIMS The aim of this study was to perform histopathological and ultra-structural examinations of liver biopsy tissue samples from BA and INH patients with liver biopsies taken during laparotomy to confirm the diagnosis of biliary atresia. SETTINGS AND DESIGN A total of patients undergoing Kasai surgery before the age of 60 days were included in an "early" group (n = 7), whereas patients undergoing surgery after the age of 60 days were included in a "late" group (n = 11). The control group (n = 11) included INH patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS For histopathological examinations, liver tissue samples obtained intra-operatively were subjected to routine histopathological procedures after being stained with caspase-3 and cytokeratin-7 antibodies. Ultra-structural evaluations were also performed. Statistical analysis used: For comparisons between the groups, a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) test and the Mann-Whitney U test were used for continuous variables. RESULTS Histopathological findings reflected the specific liver pathologic findings seen in biliary atresia. Although there was no significant difference between the BA groups, these parameters were not detected in the control group. The histopathological evaluations revealed no significant differences in the findings of liver parenchyma damage between the early, late, and control groups. Electron microscopic examinations showed that the patients in the late group had more severe signs of intra-cellular damage to the liver. CONCLUSIONS Although the histopathological examination revealed no significant differences in liver damage between the three groups, in ultra-structural evaluation, intra-cellular damage was found to be less in groups with better prognosis. Electron microscopy evaluations of intra-cellular damage may be more useful in this respect.

Abstract
The protective effects of melatonin (Mel) and vitamin E (Vit E) against the negative effects of acetamiprid (Acmp) on testicles, reproductive hormones, and oxidative stress parameters were investigated in the present study. A total of 50 Balb-c male mice were used in 7 groups; 6 mice in the control groups (distilled water, corn oil, ethanol), and 8 in other groups (Acmp, Acmp + Mel, Acmp + Vit E, Acmp + Vit E + Mel). After the experiment, which lasted 21 days, hematoxylin eosin (H&E), periodic acid Schiff (PAS), and caspase-3 immunohistochemical (IHC) staining was performed on the testicular tissues. Also, the tissues were examined ultrastructurally with the transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In the Acmp group, there were decreased seminiferous tubule diameter and epithelial thickness, epithelial degeneration, decreased spermatozoa in the lumen, decreased PAS-positive staining in the seminiferous epithelial basement membrane, edema in the interstitial area, and hydropic degeneration in Leydig cells. Caspase-3 immunoreactivity was higher than in the other groups. TEM examination showed degeneration in tubule cells, lysosomal accumulation in cells of the spermatogenic line, vacuolizations with myelin figures, and necrosis. Hydropic degeneration, electron-dense lipid vacuoles, and chromatolysis were evident in the Leydig cell cytoplasm. In Sertoli cells, electron-dense lysosomal deposits were noted. In biochemical terms, there were decreased tissue glutathione (GSH) and total antioxidant status (TAS), and increased malondialdehyde (MDA) and total oxidant status (TOS). Plasma luteinizing hormone (LH), follicular stimulating hormone (FSH), and testosterone levels were decreased. In the groups with melatonin, vitamin E, and both were applied together, tissue damage, and apoptotic cell death were reduced at both light microscopic and ultrastructural levels. In biochemical terms, there were decreased oxidative parameters and increased hormonal parameters. It was found that vitamin E was more effective in decreasing oxidative parameters and increasing antioxidative parameters when compared to melatonin, and hormonal parameters increased at a higher level in the Acmp + Vit E group than in all groups. As a result, it was found that exposure to Acmp caused damage to testicular tissue, induced oxidative stress in testicles, and decreased plasma LH, FSH, and testosterone levels, and although vitamin E is more effective than melatonin in preventing this damage, both are effective.

Abstract
Objectives The aim of this experimental animal study is to investigate the effect of bone graft and topical ellagic acid application on bone regeneration in rats with critical-sized calvarial bone defects. Material and Methods A total of 24 male Wistar rats were divided into three groups, and 7 mm critical-sized calvarial bone defects were created surgically in them. In the first group, the created defect was left empty, and this acted as a control group. In the second group, only a bone graft was placed in the created defect. In the third group, in addition to placing a bone graft in the created defect, 0.325 mg/kg ellagic acid (EA) was applied topically to the defect. Results As a result of semiquantitative scoring, osteoblast counts were 2 (SD 0.82) in the control group, 2.71 (SD 0.76) in the graft group, and 1.14 (SD 0.69) in the EA + graft group. The number of osteocytes was 2.29 (SD 0.76) in the control group, 2.71 (SD 1.11) in the graft group, and 1.43 (SD 0.54) in the EA + graft group. When inflammations were evaluated, values of 1.71 (SD 0.75), 1.14 (SD 0.69), and 3 (SD 0.82) were obtained in the control, graft, and EA + graft groups, respectively. Conclusions Topical ellagic and graft applications show different effects at different doses under topical and systemic conditions. The dose amount of ellagic acid applied, especially in topical applications, has critical importance in bone healing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hip fractures (HF) are among the most common fractures present in the emergency department and are very painful. Pericapsular nerve group block (PENG) is a new regional anesthesia technique developed for analgesia in total hip arthroplas-ties. We aimed to determine the effectiveness of PENG block used to reduce pain in patients with HF in the emergency department. METHODS This single-center, randomized, and prospective study was carried out in the emergency department. The patients in-cluded in the study were selected according to the suitability of the personnel who will perform the procedure. The sealed envelope system was used for randomization. RESULTS Statistical analysis was performed with 39 patients (18 patients in the PENG group, 21 patients in the control group). Thir-teen (33.3%) of the patients were female and 26 (66.7%) were male. The mean age was 75.3. At rest post-procedure, the mean Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) scores of the patients at the 30th min, 2nd, 6th, and 24th h were 1.78±1.83, 0.00±0.00, 0.00±0.00, and 1.28±1.41 in the PENG group. On the other hand, it was 3.38±1.86, 0.05±0.22, 2.86±2.37, and 4.95±1.47 in the control group, respectively. The mean NRS scores of the patients at 15° elevation of the leg at the 30th min, 2nd, 6th, and 24th h were 3.06±1.80, 0.06±0.24, 0.22±0.43, and 2.44±1.50 in the PENG group and it was 5.24±1.81, 1.05±0.92, 4.29±2.35, and 7.14±1.24 in the control group, respectively. CONCLUSION PENG block can reduce pain and the need for systemic analgesics as a practical option in patients with HF.

Abstract
Objective: Lipoxins are anti-inflammatory, pro-resolving molecules that are secreted by immune cells such as neutrophils and macrophages. Lipoxins are a metabolite of the arachidonic acid pathway that resolve inflammation in fibrotic liver by producing several anti-inflammatory molecules. In this study, phenotypic distribution activation markers of lymphocytes in the spleen and expression levels of chemokines (chemokine (C-X-C motif) receptor 3, chemokine (C-X-C motif) ligand 10) cytokines (interferon gamma, tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukin-6, interleukin-10) in the liver of lipoxin A4-treated fibrotic mice were investigated. Materials and methods: Liver fibrosis was induced in BALB/c mice by thioacetamide administration. Lipoxin A4 was administered during last 2 weeks of induction. Fibrosis level was determined by using Knodell scoring. Lymphocytes were identified by flow-cytometry. Expression levels of genes were measured by quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction in liver homogenates. Results: Lipoxin A4 treatment caused an elevation of T-lymphocyte percentage in the spleen. Interestingly, administration of lipoxin A4 significantly reduced B-lymphocyte population in spleen of fibrotic group. CD8+ cytotoxic T cell frequency significantly reduced in thioacetamide-induced mice; however, lipoxin A4 administration increased that percentage significantly. Lipoxin A4 treatment significantly reduced frequency of activated (CD8+CD69+) cytotoxic T cells. Expression levels of chemokines significantly reduced in the liver after lipoxin A4 treatment. While expression levels of interferon gamma, tumor necrosis factor alpha, and interleukin-6 significantly reduced in the liver after lipoxin A4 treatment, an anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-10 expression was almost at similar levels in all experimental groups. Conclusion: Lipoxin A4 performs its anti-inflammatory effect by reducing the frequency of activated T cells and expression levels of chemokines cytokines responsible from inflammatory immune response in the liver.

Abstract
Objectives The aim of this experimental animal study was to evaluate the effects of systemic propranolol on new bone formation in peri-implant bone defects. Material and Methods Implant slots were created 4mm long and 2.5 mm wide. After the titanium implants were placed in the sockets, 2 mm defects were created in the neck of the implants. Bone grafts were placed in these defects. Then the rats were randomly divided into three equal groups: control (n = 8), propranolol dose-1 (PRP-1) (n = 8), and propranolol dose-2 (PRP-2) (n = 8) groups. In the control group, the rats received no further treatment during the eight-week experimental period after the surgery. The rats in the PRP-1 and PRP-2 groups were given 5 mg/kg and 10 mg/kg propranolol, respectively, every three days for the eight-week experimental period after the surgery. At the end of the experimental period, the rats were euthanized. Blood serum was collected for biochemical analysis, and the implants and surrounding bone tissues were used for the histological analysis. Results There were no significant differences in the histological analysis results and the biochemical parameters (alkaline phosphatase, calcium, creatinine and phosphorus) of the groups (P > 0.05). Also, in the test groups, there was numerically but not statistically more new bone formation detected compared with the controls. Conclusions Within the limitations of this study, propranolol did not affect the new bone formation in peri-implant defects.

Abstract
Exposure to acrylamide (Ac) through food is almost inevitable and this kind of toxicity may cause lifelong harm. In present study, we researched effects of Crocin (Cr) on testis histopathology in Ac-induced testis of rats. Adult male rats were grouped as: group 1, 1 ml saline only; group 2, 50 mg/kg Cr only; group 3, 25 mg/kg Ac only and group 4, 25 mg/kg Ac + 50 mg/kg Cr. All administrations were given as 1 ml/day by gavage for 21 days. It was found that Ac adversely influenced the levels of FSH, testosterone and LH in the blood serum; malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidant status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI)/ glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), total antioxidant status (TAS) oxidant/antioxidant parameters in testis tissue (p < .01) and the histopathological parameters like Johnson's score, seminiferous tubule diameter, seminiferous epithelial height and H-score for caspase-3 immunoreactivity. In contrary, Cr treatment resulted in increase in testosterone, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizan hormone (LH) levels and SOD, CAT, GSH, TAS levels (p < .01) and improved all the histopathological changes. In conclusion, Cr has a promising protective potential against Ac-caused toxic damages in testicular tissue.

Abstract
AIM OF THE STUDY To conduct a histopathological examination of the damaging effects of the combination of parenteral nutrition (PN) with starvation on liver tissue using transmission electron and light microscopy. MATERIAL AND METHODS Four groups (n = 14 each) consisting of equal numbers of female and male New Zealand rabbits were formed: a group left completely unfed and receiving full-dose PN (full-dose PN group), a group provided with feed covering half its nutritional needs and receiving half-dose PN (half-dose PN + oral nutrition group), a group provided with feed covering half its nutritional needs (semi-starvation group), and a group provided with feed covering all its nutritional needs (control group). After 10 days, all rabbits were weighed, anesthetized, and euthanized, and liver tissue samples were collected. Histopathologic examination was performed by a surgical pathologist blinded to the experimental groups. Portal inflammation, ballooning degeneration, apoptosis and fibrosis were evaluated and statistically analyzed. RESULTS Severe portal inflammation, moderate portal fibrosis, slight ballooning degeneration, and moderate apoptosis were found in the full-dose PN group. Mild portal inflammation, fibrosis and mild apoptosis were found in the half-dose PN + oral nutrition group. The results of the other two groups were found normal. CONCLUSIONS Liver damage caused by PN combined with starvation can be devastating. The damage can be minimized by combining PN with enteral nutrition.

Abstract
Background/aim Healthy wound healing is very important for patient comfort. Diabetes is one of the factors that negatively affect wound healing. Ankaferd Blood Stopper (ABS) and caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) are antiinflammatory and antimicrobial agents and may have positive effects on wound healing. Materials and methods In this study, 72 male Wistar albino rats were used. Rats; control, CAPE, ABS, diabetes + control, diabetes + ABS and diabetes + CAPE groups were divided into 6 groups. A healthy 36 rats created diabetes using streptozotocin (STZ). A gingival wound was created using a 4-mm punch biopsy in the gingival tissue under the lower anterior incisors of the rats. Results The comparison between the nondiabetic groups had a statistically significant positive effect compared to the control group of CAPE and ABS (P ˂ 0.05). In the comparison between ABS and diabetes + ABS groups and in the comparison between CAPE and diabetes + CAPE groups, a decrease in vascularization in diabetes + CAPE groups was observed and it was statistically significant (P ˂ 0.005). Conclusion ABS and CAPE have been found to have positive effects on gingival wound healing in the nondiabetic group. We think that this situation is caused by its antiinflammatory and antimicrobial properties.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of systemic administration of decorin (DC) on facial nerve (FN) regeneration. METHODS A total of 32 female albino Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups: control (C) group: no bilateral FN neurorrhaphy (B-FNN), no DC application, sham-operated group: B-FNN without DC application, DC group: DC application without B-FNN, and B-FNN + DC group: B-FNN and DC application. Nerve conduction studies were performed before and after skin incisions at 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th weeks in all groups. The amplitude and latency of compound muscle action potentials were recorded. FN samples were obtained and were investigated under light microscopy and immunohistochemical staining. The nerve and axon diameter, number of axons, H score, Schwann cell proliferation, and myelin and axonal degeneration were recorded quantitatively. RESULTS In the sham group, the 3rd and 5th postoperative week, amplitude values were significantly lower than those of the B-FNN + DC group (p < 0.05). Nerve diameters were found to be significantly larger in the sham, DC, and B-FNN + DC groups than in the C group (p < 0.05). The number of axons, the axon diameter, and the H scores were found to be significantly higher in the B-FNN + DC group than in the sham group (p < 0.05). The Schwann cell proliferation, myelin degeneration, and axonal degeneration scores were significantly lower in the B-FNN + DC group than in the sham group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Electrophysiological and histopathological evaluation revealed the potential benefits provided by DC. This agent may increase FN regeneration.

Abstract
PURPOSE Biliary atresia (BA) is a disease that manifests as jaundice after birth and leads to progressive destruction of the ductal system in the liver. The aim of this study was to investigate histopathological changes and immunohistochemically examine the expression of glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), synaptophysin, and S-100 protein in the gallbladder of BA patients. METHODS The study included a BA group of 29 patients and a control group of 41 children with cholecystectomy. Gallbladder tissue removed during surgery was obtained and examined immunohistochemically and histopathologically. Tissue samples of both groups were immunohistochemically assessed in terms of GDNF, S-100 protein, and synaptophysin expression. Expression was classified as present or absent. Inflammatory activity assessment with hematoxylin and eosin staining and fibrosis assessment with Masson's trichrome staining were performed for tissue sample sections of both groups. RESULTS Ganglion cells were not present in gallbladder tissue samples of the BA group. Immunohistochemically, GDNF, synaptophysin, and S-100 expression was not detected in the BA group. Histopathological examination revealed more frequent fibrosis and slightly higher inflammatory activity in the BA than in the control group. CONCLUSION We speculate that GDNF expression will no longer continue in this region, when the damage caused by inflammation of the extrahepatic bile ducts reaches a critical threshold. The study's findings may represent a missing link in the chain of events forming the etiology of BA and may be helpful in its diagnosis.

Abstract
Acetaminophen (APAP)-induced hepatotoxicity is the most common cause of acute liver failure in worldwide. N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) is used as the APAP antidote. Cyclosporin A (CsA) is suppressed mitochondrial damage by binding cyclophilin, a mitochondrial pore transport component. The study aimed to evaluate the effects of NAC, CsA, and NAC+CsA treatments on APAP-induced hepatotoxicity in mice. Mice were randomly divided into five groups (n = 6). 400 mg/kg/ip/single dose APAP, 1200 mg/kg/i.p/single dose NAC and 50 mg/kg/i.p/single dose CsA were performed. Light and electron microscopic alterations were investigated in liver samples. Levels of serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and liver glutathione (GSH) were analyzed. 3-nitrotyrosine and cytochrome c immunoreactivities were evaluated in liver tissue. Here, we found that APAP leads to histopathological and ultrastructural changes in mice liver. Also, APAP increased cytochrome c and 3-nitrotyrosine immunopositive staining. Besides, a significant decrease in liver GSH and an increase in serum AST and ALT levels were detected in the APAP group. Interestingly, NAC+CsA treatment improved histological alterations, cytochrome c, and 3-nitrotyrosine immunoreactivities and liver GSH, serum AST/ALT levels caused by APAP. We suggest that the combination of NAC and CsA reduces acetaminophen-induced hepatotoxicity in mice.

Abstract
Bacterial biofilms are related to various dental and periodontal infectious diseases, and the characterization of this biological structure with micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) may offer valuable information for clinical and research applications. In this study, we aimed to develop a model to visualize three-dimensionally the biofilm structure on dentin using micro-CT. Dentin blocks were prepared and incubated in tryptic soy broth with Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC 29212). The control group did not receive any staining procedure, while groups 1 and 2 were stained with 100% and 50% barium sulfate, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) were used to detect biofilm formation, barium sulfate penetration, and microbial cell density in the biofilm. Micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) (SkyScan 1172, Bruker Co., Belgium) was used to visualize biofilm formation on the dentin blocks. Biofilm thicknesses were measured from 10 different locations on the specimen surfaces, using CTAn v.1.14.4 software. Obtained data were statistically analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn's tests. TEM photomicrographs showed that barium sulfate could penetrate the biofilm structure. CLSM analysis showed that viable and total cell densities were similar between the control and barium sulfate-treated groups (P > 0.05), indicating barium sulfate had no significant influence on cell density. In barium sulfate-treated blocks, biofilm could be discriminated from the dentin, and its thickness could be measured with micro-CT. This study showed that bacterial biofilm on dentin could be characterized by micro-CT after barium sulfate staining without causing any significant side effect on viable and total cell densities.

Abstract
Abstract
An ideal dressing should ensure that the wound remains moist with exudates but not macerated. Currently, there is no dressing available to suit all wounds, at all stages of the healing process. Although silver-containing dressings are the gold standard for burn wound care, few high-level trials have been completed comparing the clinical utilities of these dressings. In our study, five different types of wound dressings: carboxymethyl cellulose hydrofiber dressing with ionized silver (CMCH-Ag), polyethylene-polyethylene terephthalate aqua fiber dressing with elementary silver (PPAF-Ag), calcium alginate (CA), calcium + zinc alginate (CZA), and 0.2% nitrofurazone-embedded (NF) gauze dressings were compared in regard to histopathological parameters. Children aged between 0 and 18 years with small or middle-sized partial-thickness burns that affected less than 30% of the total body surface area were included in this study. The study groups (CMCH-Ag, PPAF-Ag, CA, and CZA) and the control group (NF) were randomly attained. Wound healing was evaluated by punch biopsies on the 21st day. The thickness of the stratum corneum and the epithelium, the number of papillae, and the papillary length were calculated and compared. The histological parameters of healing, except the stratum corneum thickness, did not show any statistical significance among the groups (P > .05). The dressings that included silver, calcium, or zinc showed useful and similar effects in noninfective burn wounds when compared with nitrofurazone-only dressings. Thus, it may be concluded that silver-containing wound dressings should not be considered as the gold standard in noninfective partial-thickness burn wounds in children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Lipoxin A4 (LXA4), an anti-inflammatory lipid mediator, regulates leukocyte cellular activity and activates gene transcription. The therapeutic effect of LXA4 on liver fibrosis and its mechanism on the immune system are largely unknown. Because the regenerative capacity of hepatocytes in acute and chronic liver failure models of mouse increases by silencing MKK4, we aimed to investigate the effect of parenteral administration of LXA4 on the genes responsible for regeneration of liver, namely MKK4, MKK7, and ATF2, and visualize the therapeutic effects in an experimental model. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fibrosis was induced in mice by administration of thioacetamide (TAA). LXA4 was administered during the last two weeks of fibrosis induction. The fibrosis level was measured by Knodell scoring. The liver function was measured by analyzing serum ALT, AST, and AP levels. Expression levels of genes responsible for liver fibrosis (TGF-α) and cell regeneration (MKK4, MKK7, and ATF2) have been measured by RT-PCR analysis. Inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokine levels were measured in serum samples and liver homogenates by Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). Ultrathin sections were examined using a transmission electron microscope and analyzed. RESULTS We observed significant healing in liver of the LXA4-treated group, histologically. This finding was in parallel with reduction of serum ALT, AST, but not AP levels. TGF-α and MKK4 expressions were significantly reduced in the LXA4-treated group. Administration of LXA4 caused significant elevation of IL-10 in systemic circulation; however, that elevation was not detected in liver homogenates. Nevertheless, significant reductions in TNF-α and IL-17 have been observed. CONCLUSION The anti-inflammatory effect of LXA4 maintains the regenerative capacity of liver during fibrosis in an experimental liver fibrosis model. LXA4 may be therapeutically beneficial in liver fibrosis.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Parenteral nutrition (PN) is used for the intravenous delivery of nutrients to patients who cannot take food orally. However, it is not clear whether PN also negatively impacts cardiac tissue. The present empirical study investigated the cardiac effects of PN in rabbits. METHODS The effects of PN were examined in three groups of rabbits: animals in the PN + fasting group (n = 14) had been fully fasted before receiving a full PN dose via an intravenous central catheter; the PN + oral feeding group (n = 14) received half of the daily calorie requirement as a half dose of PN via an intravenous central catheter; the third group consisted of controls (n = 14) with full enteral feeding and full enteral fluid intake with no PN and no central venous catheter. At the end of the 10-day study period, the rabbits were subjected to echocardiographic examination and euthanized. Blood and tissue samples were obtained from all groups. DNA was isolated from nucleated blood cells. Tissue samples were examined by both light and electron microscopy, relative telomere length was determined from DNA, and blood samples were analyzed biochemically. RESULTS At the end of the study, there were no statistically significant differences in weight change between the three groups. Echocardiography revealed minimally impaired diastolic function in the PN + fasting group compared to the other groups. Biochemical and histopathological analyses, relative telomere length determination, and electron micrographs showed significant cardiac damage in the PN + fasting group but not in the PN + oral feeding group or the control group. The blood biochemical analyses showed hyperglycemia and a low insulin level in the PN + fasting group but not in the other two groups. CONCLUSIONS A combination of PN and fasting may damage the cardiac muscle cells of rabbits via a mechanism involving hyperglycemia and oxidative stress. Additional enteral feeding may protect against the destructive effects of PN on cardiac tissue.

Abstract
Background/aim Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) and Ankaferd Blood Stopper (ABS) are considered to contribute to wound healing. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of ABS and CAPE on secondary wound healing of oral mucosal tissue. Materials and methods In total, 63 male Sprague-Dawley rats were used in this study. The animals were randomly divided into three groups and anaesthetized with ketamine (8 mg/100 g, intraperitoneally): a control group, CAPE group, and ABS group. A full-thickness excisional wound was created using a 4 mm punch biopsy tool. Topical ABS and CAPE were then applied in each group for 7, 14, and 21 days (n = 7 in each group). The animals in each group were sacrificed after 7, 14, and 21 days. Palatal specimens were stained with haematoxylin-eosin. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and tumour necrosis factor-inducible gene 6 (TSG-6) protein expressions were determined using the Western blot method. Results Inflammation, vessel dilatation, and haemorrhages were significantly lower in the CAPE group as compared with these parameters in the other groups (P < 0.05). Fibrosis was significantly higher in the ABS group as compared with that in the other groups (P < 0.05). VEGF protein levels were elevated in the 21-day CAPE group and 7-day ABS group. The expression of TSG-6 increased in the 7-day CAPE group and 21-day ABS group. Conclusion Based on our findings, ABS and CAPE had positive effects on the oral wound healing process.

Abstract
We investigated the effects of α-lipoic acid (AL) and α-tocopherol (AT) on renal histopathology in a streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rat model. Adult male rats were divided into six groups: group 1, saline only; group 2, AL only; group 3, AT only; group 4, STZ only; group 5, STZ + AL; group 6 STZ + AT. Experimental diabetes was induced by STZ. AL and AT were administered for 15 days. Kidney sections were examined using a light microscope after hematoxylin and eosin (H & E), periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) and caspase-3 staining. Histological damage to glomeruli, tubule epithelial cells and basement membrane was observed in group 4. Administration of AT and AL reduced renal injury in the diabetic rats. Group 5 exhibited a greater curative effect on diabetic rats than group 6. AT and AL may be useful for preventing diabetic renal damage.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the effects of topical and systemic administrations of melatonin and dexamethasone on facial nerve regeneration. MATERIALS AND METHODS In total, 50 male albino Wistar rats underwent facial nerve axotomy and neurorrhaphy. The animals were divided into 5 groups: control, topical melatonin, systemic melatonin, topical dexamethasone, and systemic dexamethasone. Nerve conduction studies were performed preoperatively and at 3, 6, 9, and 12 weeks after drug administrations. Amplitude and latency of the compound muscle action potentials were recorded. Coapted facial nerves were investigated under light and electron microscopy. Nerve diameter, axon diameter, and myelin thickness were recorded quantitatively. RESULTS Amplitudes decreased and latencies increased in both the melatonin and dexamethasone groups. At the final examination, the electrophysiological evidence of facial nerve degeneration was not significantly different between the groups. Histopathological examinations revealed the largest nerve diameter in the melatonin groups, followed by the dexamethasone and control groups (p<0.05). Axon diameter of the control group was smaller than those of the melatonin (topical and systemic) and topical dexamethasone groups (p<0.05). The melatonin groups had almost normal myelin ultrastructure. CONCLUSION Electrophysiological evaluation did not reveal any potential benefit of dexamethasone and melatonin in contrast to histopathological examination, which revealed beneficial effects of melatonin in particular. These agents may increase the regeneration of facial nerves, but electrophysiological evidence of regeneration may appear later.

Abstract
Background/aim Soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (suPAR) has been reported to have a positive correlation with the
activation degree of the immune system. This study’s aim is to investigate the efficiency of SuPAR serum levels in acute pancreatitis (AP)
patients in determining the severity of disease. Materials and methods This
prospective
research involves patients who arrived at the emergency service, were over 18 years old, had
nontraumatic abdominal pain and diagnosis of AP, and agreed to join the study. Demographic characteristics, contact information,
laboratory and imaging test parameters, Ranson’s criteria, the Balthazar Severity Index, the Rapid Acute Physiologic Score (RAPS), and
the modified Glasgow (Imrie) score of all patients were recorded. Two study groups were created as score of <3 (mild, Group I) and ≥3
(severe, Group II) for pancreatitis according to Ranson’s criteria. Results During the study period, 59 sequential patients with AP were included in the study. It was seen that 79.7% of the study group
(n = 47) were in Group I. Etiologically 67.8% (n = 40) cases were biliary and 32.3% (n = 19) were nonbiliary diseases. According to the
results, suPAR level was effective in distinguishing the severity of AP (AUC = 0.902, P < 0.001 (95% CI: 0.821–0.984)). With regard
to determining severe disease, suPAR had an optimum cutoff value of 6.815 ng/mL, sensitivity of 91.66%, specificity of 82.97%, and
negative predictive value of 97.5%. Conclusion Our study was performed the determine the efficiency of suPAR level in predicting severe disease in AP patients. We found
it significant in indicating the severity of disease according to the study results.

Abstract
2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo- p-dioxin (TCDD) is a toxic agent and has disruptive effects on reproductive tissues in females. TCDD disrupts the hormonal regulation of the body and decreases the production of melatonin. In this study, we investigated the protective effects of melatonin supplements against the toxic effects of TCDD on ovaries of female rats. TCDD caused a significant decrease in the average number of corpora lutea and follicles per tissue section (2.1 ± 0.7; 2.3 ± 0.8, respectively), whereas these numbers were maintained in the melatonin supplemented group (5.0 ± 0.8; 5.1 ± 0.8, respectively) and were similar to the control group (5.3 ± 1.0; 5.9 ± 0.9, respectively). Electron microscopic analysis showed that the disruption of ultrastructure components such as cell membrane and organelles due to TCDD exposure was inhibited by melatonin supplements. This study suggested that melatonin has a protective and a possible ameliorative effect over histopathological damage of rat ovaries exposed to TCDD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between serum uric acid (UA) level and the predicted risk score for sudden cardiac death in 5 years (the HCM Risk-SCD), galectin-3 level, and positive fragmented QRS (fQRS) on electrocardiography (ECG) in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). METHODS This was a prospective, observational study. In all, 115 consecutive patients (age >17 years) with HCM and 80 healthy participants were included in the study. The HCM Risk-SCD score (%), galectin-3 level, and fQRS on ECG were evaluated in all patients. RESULTS The serum UA, galectin-3 level, UA/Creatinine ratio, incidence of ventricular tachycardia (VT) and syncope, and some echocardiographic parameters were significantly higher in the patient group than in the control group (all p<0.05). The UA value was significantly higher in patients with a high score on the HCM Risk-SCD, a positive fQRS, a high galectin-3 level, VT incidence, and need for implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) implantation or cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) than in those without (HCM Risk-SCD >6%. Namely, HCM Risk-SCD >6%, UA: 6.71±1.29 mg/dL, HCM Risk-SCD ≤5.9%, UA: 5.84±1.39 mg/dL, p=0.001; fQRS(+), UA: 6.56±1.20 mg/dL, fQRS(-), UA: 5.63±1.49 mg/dL, p<0.001; galectin-3 >6.320 pg/mL, UA: 6.56±1.27 mg/dL, galectin-3 ≤6.310 pg/mL, p=0.016; left atrium anterior-posterior dimension (LAAPD) >36 mm, UA: 6.31±1.33 mg/dL, LAAPD <36 mm, UA: 5.20±1.60 mg/dL, p=0.005; VT(+), UA: 6.83±1.19 mg/dL, VT(-), UA: 5.97±1.42 mg/dL, p=0.008; ICD(+), UA: 7.08±0.88 mg/dL, ICD(-), UA: 6.06±1.42 mg/dL, p=0.022; CPR(+), UA: 7.03±0.96 mg/dL, CPR(-), UA: 6.04±1.42 mg/dL, p=0.018. A statistically significant correlation was observed between UA and HCM Risk-SCD, galectin-3 level, LAAPD, and left ventricular (LV) mass (LVM) (r and p values, respectively: 0.355, <0.001; 0.297, 0.002; 0.309, 0.001; 0.276, 0.003. CONCLUSION The serum UA level was significantly higher in patients with HCM compared with the control group. A high UA level was associated with a higher HCM Risk-SCD score, positive fQRS, higher galectin-3 level, greater LAAPD, VT incidence, and the need for ICD implantation and CPR in patients with HCM.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Halitosis is composed by hundreds of toxic gases. It is still not clear whether halitosis gases self-inhaled by halitosis patients cause side effects. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of H2S inhalation at a low concentration (human equivalent dose of pathologic halitosis) on rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS The threshold level of pathologic halitosis perceived by humans at 250 ppb of H2S was converted to rat equivalent concentration (4.15 ppm). In the experimental group, 8 rats were exposed to H2S via continuous inhalation but not the control rats. After 50 days, blood parameters were measured and tissue samples were obtained from the brain, kidney and liver and examined histopathologically to determine any systemic effect. RESULTS While aspartate transaminase, creatine kinase-MB and lactate dehydrogenase levels were found to be significantly elevated, carbondioxide and alkaline phosphatase were decreased in experimental rats. Other blood parameters were not changed significantly. Experimental rats lost weight and became anxious. Histopathological examination showed mononuclear inflammatory cell invasion in the portal areas, nuclear glycogen vacuoles in the parenchymal area, single-cell necrosis in a few foci, clear expansion in the central hepatic vein and sinusoids, hyperplasia in Kupffer cells and potential fibrous tissue expansion in the portal areas in the experimental rats. However, no considerable histologic damage was observed in the brain and kidney specimens. CONCLUSIONS It can be concluded that H2S inhalation equivalent to pathologic halitosis producing level in humans may lead to systemic effects, particularly heart or liver damage in rats.

The EMF and EMF + Omg-3 groups both consisted of six rats exposed to an EMF of 900 MHz for 60 min/day for 15 days. No procedure was applied to the six rats in the Cont group. At the end of the experiment, all rats were sacrificed, and the mean volumes of the cortex and medulla of the adrenal gland were estimated using a stereological counting technique. The stereological results showed that the mean volume of the adrenal gland increased significantly in the EMF-exposed groups compared to the Cont group. Additionally, the mean volume of the adrenal gland was significantly lower in the EMF + Omg-3 group compared to the EMF group. We suggest that Omg-3 therapy aimed at suppressing the effects of EMF may prove a safe alternative for animals, whether or not they are exposed to EMF.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Oxidative stress is one of the major causes of methotrexate induced lung injury (MILI). Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), which occurs naturally in human food, has antioxidative and anti-inflammatory activities. The aim of this study was to research the potential protective role of ALA on MILI in rats. METHODS Twenty one rats were randomly subdivided into three groups: control (group I), methotrexate (MTX) treated (group II), and MTX+ALA treated (group III). Lung injury was performed with a single dose of MTX (20 mg/kg) to groups 2 and 3. On the sixth day, animals in all groups were sacrificed by decapitation and lung tissue and blood samples were removed for histological examination and also measurement the levels of interleukin-1-beta (IL-1β), malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), myeloperoxidase (MPO), and sodium potassium-adenosine triphosphatase (Na+/K+ATPase). RESULTS In MTX group tissue GSH, Na+/K+ATPase activities were lower, tissue MDA, MPO and plasma IL-1?, TNF-? were significantly higher than the other groups. Histopathological examination showed that lung injury was less severe in group 2 according to group 3. CONCLUSIONS Oxidative damage of MTX in rat lung is partially reduced when combined with ALA.

Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and other volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) appear mainly in the oral air of patients with halitosis. It seems that VSCs are directly involved in the pathogenesis of gingival diseases. In previous studies, short-term (7 hours-4 days), high concentrations (5-400 ppm) of H2S applications on periodontal tissues have been evaluated in a culture medium. The aim of the present study was to investigate the potential effects of lower (equivalent to halitosis) concentrations of H2S on rat gingival tissue for longer-term inhalation. The threshold level of pathologic halitosis perceived by humans at 250 ppb of H2S was converted to rat equivalent concentration (4.15 ppm). Rats in the experimental (H2S) group (n=8) were exposed to H2S continuously but not the control rats (n=8). After 50 days, the gingival sulcular tissue samples of each rat were taken and examined using transmission electron microscope. Ultrastructural changes in the sulcular epithelia of the rat gingiva showed deformation of celullar shape, vacuolization, and disintegrity of intercelullar connection by loss of desmosomes and collagen fibrils. No basal membrane damage was observed. Inhalation of low levels of H2S (equivalent of halitosis) in the oral environment causes ultrastructural celullar damages in rat sulcular mucosa. These results suggest that halitosis may be the potential reason for periodontal destruction in humans.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Coronary angiography has a limitation to determine the severity of intermediate stenosis (30-70%)1,2. Fractional flow reserve (FFR) is a method for the assessment of the intermediate stenosis severity3. The effect of coronary artery disease (CAD) severity on the FFR results is not clear. In this study, we aimed to expose the effect of CAD severity calculated with Syntax and Gensini scores on FFR results. PATIENTS AND METHODS We scanned patients data (n=378) who had undergone fractional flow reserve measurements in our center. Patients with acute coronary syndrome in the last month, moderate or severe valvular diseases, acute heart failure, serious bradycardia, atrial fibrillation/flutter, severe left ventricular hypertrophy or patient with deficient data were excluded. 351 patients were included in the study. Syntax and Gensini scores were calculated and compared with FFR results. Hemodynamically significant result for FFR, ratio <0.80 was accepted. RESULTS The negative correlation between high Gensini, high Syntax scores and FFR results was statistically significant. Especially patients with Syntax scores >22 had notable more crucial lesions in FFR measurements (p<0.001). Cardiovascular disease risk factors such as age, gender, hypertension, diabetes mellitus and dyslipidemia did not correlate with the FFR results. Patients with intermediate stenosis (30-70%) and high Gensini and high Syntax scores were found to have more hemodynamically significant on FFR measurements (FFR <0.80). CONCLUSIONS Intermediate lesions with high Syntax score should be evaluated by hemodynamic procedures and treated more carefully with optimal medical treatment or revascularization. Revascularization method of CAD with high Syntax score should be decided with hemodynamic procedures as FFR measurements.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the histopathologic effects of L-carnitine (LC) in an experimental severe pancreatitis (SP) model induced with sodium taurocholate (STC). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA LC is an amino acid-like molecule that plays an active role in transporting fatty acids and producing Acetyl CoA in mitochondrial matrix for β-oxidation to provide energy which is needed for metabolism. It has ameliorative effects on cell injury demonstrated in many studies. The present study focuses on evaluating histopathologic effects of LC in an experimental SP model. METHODS This experimental study in rats was conducted at the Experimental Animal Research Laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine of Inonu University, Malatya, Turkey. Thirty-two Spraque-dawley male rats were divided into 4 groups in a randomized fashion: control (C) group, L-carnitine (LC) group, pancreatitis (P) group, pancreatitis and L-carnitine (P+LC) group. Pancreatitis was induced by a retrograde pancreatic duct injection of 4% sodium taurocholate and L-carnitine was administered 200 mg/kg/day in treatment group. Rats were euthanized with cardiac puncture under anesthesia at 48th hour of the experiment for biochemical and histopathological examination. RESULTS In (P+LC) group, the histopathological findings of the pancreatitis were markedly reduced. Acinar cell degeneration was rarely seen. Interlobular and intralobular inflammation and edema was generally mild. The pancreatic damage score of (P+LC) group was significantly lower than that of the (P) group (p<0.05). CONCLUSION This study revealed that l-carnitine has a significant histopathologic protective effect on acinar cell degeneration in STC-induced SP model in rats.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Both end-organ damage and high red cell distribution width (RDW) values are associated with adverse cardiovascular events, inflammatory status, and neurohumoral activation in hypertensive disease and in the general population. In this study, we investigated the relationship between RDW and end-organ damage in hypertensive patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS The 446 systo-diastolic hypertensive patients included in the study received 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. Left ventricular mass index, glomerular filtration rate, and microalbuminuria were measured to identify end-organ damage. High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) levels of all patients were also examined. RESULTS The mean age of the participants was 49.96 ±11.04 years. The mean RDW was 13.06 ±1.05%. Red cell distribution width was positively correlated with left ventricular myocardial index (LVMI), urinary albumin, hs-CRP, and NT-proBNP (r = 0.298, p < 0.001; r = 0.228, p < 0.001; r = 0.337, p < 0.001; r = 0.277, p < 0.001, respectively), while RDW was negatively correlated with eGFR (r = -0.153, p < 0.001). Additionally, while there was a positive correlation between RDW and 24-h systolic blood pressure, no correlation was found between RDW and 24-h diastolic blood pressure (r = 0.132, p = 0.006 and r = 0.017, p = 0.725, respectively). Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that RDW levels were independently associated with eGFR, LVMI, and severity of albuminuria (β = 0.126, p = 0.010; β = -0.149, p = 0.002; β = 0.114, p = 0.035). CONCLUSIONS High RDW levels in systo-diastolic hypertensive patients were found to be an independent predictor of end-organ damage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In this study, the relationship between patency of saphenous vein (SV) graft and different sizes of aorta wall punches was investigated during the follow-up period after coronary artery bypass graft surgery. We also evaluated the other possible factors affecting SV graft patency. METHODS This study consisted of 266 consecutive and symptomatic patients with postoperative angiography. The primary endpoint was at least one saphenous graft failure observed from coronary computed tomography angiography (cCTA) and/or invasive angiography after surgery. Groups were created as SV occluded and patent group. Survival curves of patients in groups were estimated using Kaplan-Meier method and compared by log-rank test. Multivariate analysis was performed using the Cox proportional hazard model. RESULTS Cox-regression analysis demonstrated influence of older age (P = .023) and Diabetes Mellitus (DM) (P = .002) on SV graft failure. However, increasing ejection fraction (P = .011) was a protective factor against SV graft failure. There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of usage rate of the punches with different diameters (P = .296). CONCLUSION The incidence of SV graft patency does not seem to increase in patients whose 4.8-mm aortic punch was used during proximal anastomosis compared to the reference group in which a punch of 4.0 mm was used. Also, the final proximal anastomosis graft size that was measured using cCTA was similar between patients with 4.8-mm punch and patients with 4-mm punch. Results from this study could help to determine which size for aortosaphenous anastomosis is clinically optimal.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Although atrial fibrillation (AF) is one of the most common rhythm disorders observed in clinical practice, a multicenter epidemiological study has not been conducted in our country. This study aimed to assess our clinical approach to AF based upon the records of the first multicenter prospective Atrial Fibrillation in Turkey: Epidemiologic Registry (AFTER) study. STUDY DESIGN Taking into consideration the distribution of the population in our country, 2242 consecutive patients with at least one AF attack determined by electrocardiographic examination in 17 different tertiary health care centers were included in the study. Inpatients and patients that were admitted to emergency departments were excluded from the study. Epidemiological data of the patients and the treatment administered were assessed. RESULTS The mean age of the patients was determined as 66.8 ± 12.3 years with female patients representing 60% of the study population. While the most common AF type in the Turkish population was non-valvular AF (78%), persistent/permanent AF was determined in 81% of all patients. Hypertension (%67) was the most common co-morbidity in patients with AF. While a stroke or transient ischemic attack or history of systemic thromboembolism was detected in 15.3% of the patients, bleeding history was recorded in 11.2%. Also, 50% of the patients were on warfarin treatment and 53% were on aspirin treatment at the time of the study. The effective INR level was detected in 41.3% of the patients. The most frequent cause of not receiving anticoagulant therapy was physician neglect. CONCLUSION These results demonstrate the necessity for improved quality of physician care of patients with AF, especially with regards to antithrombotic therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The exchange of substances between mother and fetus via the placenta plays a vital role during development. A number of developmental disorders in the fetus and placenta are observed during diabetic pregnancies. Diabetes, together with placental apoptosis, can lead to developmental and functional disorders. AIMS Histological, ultrastructural and apoptotic changes were investigated in the placenta of streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats. STUDY DESIGN Animal experimentation. METHODS In this study, a total of 12 female Wistar Albino rats (control (n=6) and diabetic (n=6)) were used. Rats in the diabetic group, following the administration of a single dose of STZ, showed blood glucose levels higher than 200 mg/dL after 72 hours. When pregnancy was detected after the rats were bred, two pieces of placenta and the fetuses were collected on the 20(th) day of pregnancy by cesarean incision under ketamine/ xylazine anesthesia from in four rats from the control and diabetic groups. Placenta tissues were processed for light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Hematoxylin-eosin (HE) and periodic acid Schiff-diastase (PAS-D) staining for light microscopic and caspase-3 staining for immunohistochemical investigations were performed for each placenta. Electron microscopy was performed on thin sections contrasted with uranyl acetate and lead nitrate. RESULTS Weight gain in the placenta and fetuses of diabetic rats and thinning of the decidual layer, thickening of the hemal membrane, apoptotic bodies, congestion in intervillous spaces, increased PAS-D staining in decidual cells and caspase-3 immunoreactivity were observed in the diabetic group. After the ultrastructural examination, the apoptotic appearance of the nuclei of trophoblastic cells, edema and intracytoplasmic vacuolization, glycogen accumulation, dilation of the endoplasmic reticulum and myelin figures were observed. In addition, capillary basement membrane thickening, capillary endothelial cells chromatin condensation in the nucleus and corrugation of the nucleus were found. CONCLUSION Diabetes causes histomorphometric, ultrastructural and apoptotic changes in rat placenta.
