Abstract
Water pollution has become a critical global concern requiring effective monitoring techniques and robust protection strategies. Contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) are increasingly detected in various water sources, with their harmful effects on humans and ecosystems continually evolving. Based on literature reports highlighting the promising sorption properties of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), the aim of this study was to evaluate the suitability of NH2-MIL-125 (Ti) and UiO-66 (Ce) as sorbents in passive sampling devices (MOFs-PSDs) for the collection and extraction of a wide group of CECs. Solvothermal methods were used to synthesize MOFs, and the characterization of the obtained materials was performed using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), powder X-ray diffractometry (pXRD) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The research demonstrated the sorption capabilities of the tested MOFs, the ease and rapidity of their chemical regeneration and the possibility of reuse as sorbents. Using chemometric analysis, the structural properties of CECs determining the sorption efficiency on the surface of NH2-MIL-125 (Ti) were identified. The MOFs-PSDs were lab-calibrated to examine the kinetics of analytes sorption and determine the sampling rates (Rs). MOFs-PSDs and CNTs-PSDs (PSDs containing carbon nanotubes as a sorbent) were then placed in the Elbląg River and the Vistula Lagoon to sampling and extraction of the target compounds from the water. CNTs-PSDs were selected, based on our previous research, for the comparison of the effectiveness of the MOFs-PSDs in environmental monitoring. MOFs-PSDs were successfully used in monitoring of CECs in water. The time-weighted average concentrations (CTWA) of 2-hydroxycarbamazepine, carbamazepine-10,11-epoxide, p-nitrophenol, 3,5-dichlorophenol and caffeine were determined in the Elbląg River and CTWA of metoprolol, diclofenac, 2-hydroxycarbamazepine, carbamazepine-10,11-epoxide, p-nitrophenol, 3,5-dichlorophenol and caffeine were determine in the Vistula Lagoon using MOFs-PSDs and a high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole mass spectrometer.

Abstract
Progress in excogitation suitable strategies for monitoring chemical compounds in wastewater is an essential step for further research into the occurrence, impact, and fate of the pollutants in the aquatic environment. At present, it is desirable to advance and use economical, environmentally friendly and non-labour intensive methods of environmental analysis. In this study, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were successfully applied, regenerated, and reused as a sorbent in passive samplers for monitoring contaminants in treated and untreated wastewater at three wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) located in different urbanization areas in northern Poland. Three cycles of chemical and thermal regeneration of used sorbents were performed. It was shown that it is possible to regenerate CNTs a minimum of three times and reuse them in passive samplers while maintaining the desired sorption properties. The obtained results confirm that the CNTs are perfectly in line with the main principles of green chemistry and sustainability. Carbamazepine, ketoprofen, naproxen, diclofenac, p-nitrophenol, atenolol, acebutolol, metoprolol, sulfapyridine and sulfamethoxazole were detected in each of the WWTPs, both in treated and untreated wastewater. The obtained data drastically show the inefficiency of the removal of contaminants by conventional WWTPs. More importantly, the results even indicate negative contaminant removal in most cases, i.e. higher concentrations (up to 863%) of these substances in the effluent compared to the influent.

Abstract
Passive sampling is an interesting and cost-effective strategy for the quantification of micropollutants in the aquatic environment. When combined especially with a sensitive analytical method such as liquid chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), the use of passive sampling devices (PSDs) enables long-term and reliable determination of a wide range of chemicals. In this study, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were used as an innovative sorbent in POCIS-like samplers (Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Sampler). The developed CNTs-PSDs were calibrated by the flow-through method and the obtained sampling rates (Rs) of analytes were compared with the previously obtained Rs values using the semi-static method. Subsequently, passive samplers were placed in the Baltic Sea, the Nogat River, and the Sztumskie Pole Lake in order to sample and concentrate 28 chemical compounds belonging to the group of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs). For the first time, the effectiveness of the use of CNTs-PSDs in the field was proven by the quantification of carbamazepine, diclofenac, p-nitrophenol, bisphenol A, 3,5-dichlorophenol, 17-β-estradiol, 17-α-ethinylestradiol and metoprolol in the tested surface waters. The obtained time-weighted average (TWA) concentrations of analytes ranged from 0.22 ± 0.12 ng/L (for metoprolol in the Nogat River) to 32.1 ± 2.4 ng/L (for bisphenol A in the Sztumskie Pole Lake). More importantly, CNTs-PSDs determined a greater amount of micropollutants than grab sampling and solid-phase extraction (SPE), which proves the advantage of passive sampling over grab sampling, especially when monitoring contaminants in the aquatic environment at low concentration levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to analyze the co-occurrence of adult and child abuse based on the reports collected from the Polish police and social welfare institutions. METHODS The study involved data concerning 468 households in Szczecin (Poland) inhabited by children where acts of violence between adults took place. The presented data refer to the years 2012-2103. The data came from so called Blue Card files, i.e. documents issued by the police and social workers in cases of domestic abuse, providing information about its forms, perpetrators, and victims. RESULTS Domestic violence usually occurs between spouses and cohabitees (78%). The perpetrator was usually a man (88%). Violence usually lasted from 1 up to 3 years (30.0%). The most common forms of physical abuse against adults and children included pushing (79.5% of adults, 22.4% of children) and hitting (64.7% of adults, 16.6% of children), and psychologically abusive behaviors were mostly insults (91.9% of adults, 27.5% of children) and criticism (79.1% of adults, 21.5% of children). This work has shown that the longer the psychological abuse between adults lasts, the greater probability is that it will also be used against children. Child abuse is also associated with putting up resistance to the police by perpetrators. CONCLUSIONS Summing up, in households where violence between adults is observed, actions should be taken to prevent violence against children.

Abstract
Passive techniques are a constantly evolving approach to the long-term monitoring of micropollutants, including pharmaceuticals, in the aquatic environment. This paper presents, for the first time, the calibration results of a new CNTs-PSDs (carbon nanotubes used as a sorbent in passive sampling devices) with an examination of the effect of donor phase salinity, water pH and the concentration of dissolved humic acids (DHAs), using both ultrapure and environmental waters. Sampling rates (Rs) were determined for the developed kinetic samplers. It has been observed that the impact of the examined environmental factors on the Rs values strictly depends on the type of the analytes. In the case of β-blockers, the only environmental parameter affecting their uptake rate was the salinity of water. A certain relationship was noted, namely the higher the salt concentration in water, the lower the Rs values of β-blockers. In the case of sulfonamides, water salinity, water pH 7-9 and DHAs concentration decreased the uptake rate of these compounds by CNTs-PSDs. The determined Rs values differed in particular when the values obtained from the experiments carried out using ultrapure water and environmental waters were compared. The general conclusion is that the calibration of novel CNTs-PSDs should be carried out under physicochemical conditions of the aquatic phase that are similar to the environmental matrix.

Abstract
At the end of August 2019, in Warsaw, the sewage collection system of the Wastewater Treatment Plant malfunctioned. During the subsequent 12 days, over 3.6 million m3 of untreated sewage was introduced from the damaged collector directly into the Vistula River. It is one of the biggest known failures of its kind in the world so far. In this study we investigated to what extent the incident contributed to the increased discharge of anti-inflammatory drugs into the environment. The study covered the section from the point of discharge to the city of Toruń (ca. 170 km downstream). It was found that in the river waters downstream of the damaged collector, the concentrations of selected pharmaceuticals increased considerably in comparison with the waters upstream of the collector. The highest concentrations were observed for paracetamol (102.9 μg/L), ibuprofen (5.3 μg/L) and diclofenac (4.8 μg/L). We also measured to what extent and at what rate these pollutants were distributed along the river. The effects of the incident were observed in further parts of the river after 16 days. In the study we also detected elevated concentrations of ibuprofen and diclofenac in the bottom sediments collected 6 weeks after the failure. Measurements of the levels of pharmaceuticals in estuarial and marine waters in the vicinity of the mouth of the Vistula River indicate that the incident did not significantly increase the load of these pollutants in the waters of the southern Baltic Sea.

Abstract
By exploiting an established on-surface metallation strategy, we address the ability of the corrolic macrocycle to stabilise transition metal ions in high-valent (III) oxidation states in metal-supported molecular layers. This approach offers a route to engineer adsorbed metal complexes that cannot be easily fabricated by organic synthesis methods and bear a vacant axial coordination site for catalytic conversions.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) could serve as a structuring agent, a solvent, or a source of dopant during solvothermal synthesis of semiconductors particles. To understand the role of IL during formation of TiO2 particles, it is necessary to study the stability of this IL in solvothermal synthesis conditions, as well as studying the surface properties of formed TiO2 particles. In view of this, the effect of the 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride IL ([TPTZ][Cl]) thermal decomposition during the solvothermal reaction and IL content in the reaction system on photoactivity of TiO2 microparticles has been systematically investigated. The samples obtained by using [TPTZ][Cl] exhibited remarkable photocatalytic properties in phenol degradation reaction under visible light. HPLC analysis of the solvothermal reaction medium and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis of TiO2 particles revealed that [TPTZ][Cl] was decomposed completely and was incorporated into the TiO2 lattice. Generally, increasing the reaction time (1, 4, 12, and 24 h) promoted the TiO2 microspheres formation, as well as raising the visible light-induced photocatalytic activity of the photocatalysts. Longer reaction time was also accompanied by an increase in the efficiency of 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride decomposition. The properties of the photocatalysts were investigated by means of UV-VIS diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), BET surface area measurements, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) analysis, and XPS.

Abstract
We have experimentally determined the lateral registry and geometric structure of free-base porphine (2H-P) and copper-metalated porphine (Cu-P) adsorbed on Cu(111), by means of energy-scanned photoelectron diffraction (PhD), and compared the experimental results to density functional theory (DFT) calculations that included van der Waals corrections within the Tkatchenko-Scheffler approach. Both 2H-P and Cu-P adsorb with their center above a surface bridge site. Consistency is obtained between the experimental and DFT-predicted structural models, with a characteristic change in the corrugation of the four N atoms of the molecule's macrocycle following metalation. Interestingly, comparison with previously published data for cobalt porphine adsorbed on the same surface evidences a distinct increase in the average height of the N atoms above the surface through the series 2H-P, Cu-P, and cobalt porphine. Such an increase strikingly anti-correlates the DFT-predicted adsorption strength, with 2H-P having the smallest adsorption height despite the weakest calculated adsorption energy. In addition, our findings suggest that for these macrocyclic compounds, substrate-to-molecule charge transfer and adsorption strength may not be univocally correlated.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The military service of Polish soldiers on missions abroad began in 1953. Many years of experience of the Polish army as well as the armed forces of other countries show that being in a mission area has a significant impact on soldiers' mental health. Soldiers experience problems with anxiety disorders, depression and posttraumatic stress, which is associated with a difficult return to family life. The aim of the paper was to analyze psychosocial aspects of participation of the Polish Armed Forces in combat missions outside the country. METHODS The study involved a group of 102 soldiers serving in the Military Unit No. 4092 in Walcz, Military Unit No. 4094 in Walcz, and the Military Academy of Land Forces in Wroclaw. All subjects are veterans of missions outside Poland. The research method was the diagnostic survey method. Three standardized research tools were used: the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), NEO-FFI Personality Inventory, Beck's Depression Scale, and the author's questionnaire. RESULTS The studies have shown relationships between the level of anxiety in soldiers - veterans of missions abroad and strong battlefield stressors to which they had been subjected, and their family situation and non-institutional methods of psychological support they had received during their stay in the mission area. During the studies a factor was distinguished that contributes to the feeling of incomprehension of soldiers by their relatives after returning home. CONCLUSIONS 1. A higher level of anxiety is observed in soldiers who had experienced lifethreatening situations during their missions. 2. Having children is a factor that increases the level of anxiety in veterans on missions abroad. 3. Regular contact with families left behind in the country is associated with a lower sense of fear in soldiers.

Abstract
We demonstrate here that theory-assisted near-edge X-ray absorption fine-structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy enables the site-sensitive monitoring of on-surface chemical reactions, thus, providing information not accessible by other techniques. As a prototype example, we have used free-base 5,10,15-tris(pentafluorophenyl)corroles (3H-TpFPC) adsorbed on Ag(111) and present a detailed investigation of the angle-dependent NEXAFS of this molecular species as well as of their thermally induced derivatives. For this, we have recorded experimental C and N K-edge NEXAFS spectra and interpret them based on XAS cross-section calculations by using a continuous fraction approach and core-hole including multiprojector PAW pseudopotentials within DFT. We have characterized the as-deposited low temperature (200 K) phase and unraveled the subsequent changes induced by dehydrogenation (at 330 K) and ring-closure reactions (at 430 K). By exemplarily obtaining profound insight into the on-surface chemistry of free-base corrolic species adsorbed on a noble metal this work highlights how angle-dependent XAS combined with accurate theoretical modeling can serve for the investigation of on-surface reactions, whereby even highly similar molecular structures, such as tautomers and isomers, can be distinguished.

Abstract
Chiroptical methods have been proven to be superior compared to their achiral counterparts for the structural elucidation of many compounds. To expand the use of chiroptical systems to everyday applications, the development of functional materials exhibiting intense chiroptical responses is essential. Particularly, tailored and robust interfaces compatible with standard device operation conditions are required. Herein, we present the design and synthesis of chiral allenes and their use for the functionalization of gold surfaces. The self-assembly results in a monolayer-thin room-temperature-stable upstanding chiral architecture as ascertained by ellipsometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure. Moreover, these nanostructures anchored to device-compatible substrates feature intense chiroptical second harmonic generation. Both straightforward preparation of the device-compatible interfaces along with their chiroptical nature provide major prospects for everyday applications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Domestic violence is a phenomenon stemming from various social issues. One of such issues, which arouses much interest, is the behavior of psychiatric patients using violence in their family. The aim of the following work was the analysis of the phenomenon of violence with reference to perpetrators-psychiatric patients from the Szczecin area in the years 2012-2013. In addition, the authors'aim was also to indicate that the beliefs held by society on aggression of psychiatric patients are not confirmed by the actual state. METHODS The research was conducted with the research tool prepared on the basis of the "Blue Cards" - part A questionnaire. For data gathering, the document analysis method -survey-was used. 141 psychiatric patients constituted the research group. These people have already used violence against adults, and they already had the Blue Card. The members of the group were examined on the basis of several variables, such as sex, age, and the form of the violence used. RESULTS Men were the ones most frequently using violence, and with regard to the forms of violence, it was most often hitting and pushing. As far as psychic violence is concerned, most perpetrators admitted they used to humiliate, criticize and bother their victims. Regarding other types of behaviors among the psychiatric patients using violence, as many as 96 respondents admitted that they used punishable threats and insults, and 71 respondents admitted they destroyed and damaged property. CONCLUSIONS On the basis of the conducted analysis, the authors claim that the obtained data do not confirm the common belief that psychiatric patients indicate an increased level of aggression.

Abstract
The knowledge of the sorption mechanism of different chemicals onto third generation carbon sorbents such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is needed in order to project systems for the effective removal of pollutants from the environment. This paper reports evaluation of the sorption mechanism of selected ionic liquids (ILs), being considered as potential pollutant in environment, onto various CNTs. CNTs characterized by the smallest diameter and the biggest surface area showed the highest sorption capacity to isolate ILs from an aqueous solution. CNTs with a bigger diameter, a functionalized surface and particularly a helical shape showed a lower sorption capacity. The sorption mechanism has been defined as complex, including van der Waals, π-π and electrostatic interactions with dominating π-π interactions. Due to the relatively high sorption coefficient (355.98 ± 20.69-6397.10 ± 355.42 L kg-1 depending on the IL) the study showed that multi-walled carbon nanotubes can potentially be used to effectively isolate ILs from an aqueous solution. Moreover, proved in this study, the fast sorption kinetic, and uncomplicated regeneration process, leading to an even higher sorption capacity, means that CNTs are promising material which could find potential applications in the treatment of water contaminated by ILs.

Abstract
The differences in effectiveness of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as the dispersive solid-phase extraction (dSPE) sorbent for the selective extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were explained on the basis of theoretical study. It was observed that for low molecular weight PAHs, the recoveries using non-helical and helical MWCNTs were similar. In contrary, for PAHs containing five or more aromatic rings, the extraction efficiency was higher using HMWCNTs than for non-helical ones. Principle component analysis (PCA) as well as providing structural parameters and interaction energies for adsorption processes (PAH + CNT → PAH-CNT) have been used for this purpose. All the PAH + CNT → PAH-CNT adsorption processes considered were found to be thermodynamically favorable. However, the adsorption energies (Eads) for PAHs and the helical carbon nanotube surface estimated for the B(a)P-HCNT and I(1,2,3-cd)P-HCNT are substantially less negative than those observed for PAH molecules interacting with the non-helical CNT. Namely, the Eads calculated in simulated aqueous environment for the B(a)P-MWCNT(6,2) and I(1,2,3-cd)P-MWCNT(6,2) were respectively - 43.32 and - 59.98 kcal/mol, while values of only - 7.75 kcal/mol (B(a)P-HCNT) and - 9.13 kcal/mol (I(1,2,3-cd)P-HCNT) were found for the corresponding PAH-HCNT systems. Therefore, we conclude that the replacement of MWCNTs with HCNTs leads to PAH-HCNT systems in which the interaction energies are much smaller than those estimated for the corresponding PAH-MWCNT systems. HMWCNTs are therefore recommended as the dSPE sorbent phase for the extraction of both low and high molecular weight PAHs from water samples.

Abstract
Single-molecule magnets based on lanthanide double-deckers are attracting significant attention due to their unrivaled single-ion anisotropy. To exploit their fascinating electronic and magnetic properties in devices for information storage or spin transport, studies on the preservation or variation of electronic and magnetic functionalities upon adsorption on surfaces are necessary. Herein, we introduced a comprehensive scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) surface science study, complemented by density functional theory (DFT) simulations, of a recently synthesized single-molecule magnet based on porphyrazine deckers, conveniently equipped with ethyl moieties to make them soluble and sublimable. We demonstrated that the double-decker species were intactly adsorbed on Au(111), Ag(111), and Cu(111) in a flat-on fashion and self-assembled in hexagonal close-packed layers. Systematic multi- and monolayer XPS was performed on the surface-confined species, confirming the preservation of the electronic properties of the ligands and the lanthanide center upon adsorption.

Abstract
The influence of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) on the adsorption properties of non-ionic polymers, i.e. polyethylene glycol (PEG) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), at the Al2O3/solution interface was studied. Measurements for various molecular weights and for various amounts of functional groups on the polymer macromolecules were undertaken and the results obtained discussed in the light of these variations. Studies of the mutual interactions of the polymer–surfactant system in aqueous solution were helpful in explaining the equilibria involved in the Al2O3/polymer solution system in the presence of SDS. The thickness of the adsorption layer was determined by viscometric methods and the influence of the degree of hydrolysis of PVA on the structure of the adsorption layer demonstrated.

Abstract
The influence of the molecular weight of polyelectrolytes on their adsorption and on the structure of the adsorbed layers at the manganese oxide(IV)–polymer solution interface was determined. Polyacrylic acid (PAA) and polyacrylamide (PAM) were applied as ionic polymers. An explanation was proposed for the observed changes in surface charge and zeta potential of the solid in the presence of these polymers. The thickness of the adsorption layer of PAA and PAM was determined and the free energies of adsorption of these polymers on the MnO2 surface were calculated from the zeta potential measurements.

Abstract
In the studies presented, the influence of the molecular weight of polyethylene glycol (PEG) on the adsorption and electrical properties at the metal oxide/polymer solution interface has been determined. The main factors responsible for the observed changes in the zeta potential and surface charge of titania were determined on the basis of the data obtained. It was demonstrated that changes in the ionic structure of the Stern layer depend on the molecular weight of PEG and its conformation. A possible mechanism for the changes in zeta potential both with pH and molecular weight was proposed on the basis of values of the surface charge difference (Δσ0) and the diffuse layer charge difference (Δσd) as determined in the presence and absence of the polymer. The thickness of the adsorption layer (δ) on the surface of titania was calculated from the zeta potential changes, both in the presence and absence of the polymer. A distinct influence of the PEG molecular weight was noted on the values of the adsorption layer thickness (δ) determined. The structures of the macromolecules in solution and at the solid/solution interface were compared and from the dependencies obtained some changes in the shape and dimensions of the polymer coils on passing from the bulk solution to the interface were proposed.

Abstract
Continous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) is particularly recommended for septic shock patients in intensive care units. The CRRT technique used most frequently is high volume continuous veno-venous haemofiltration. It provides a high rate of clearance of uremic toxins and inflammatory cytokines. However, it should also be taken into account that substances important for homeostasis may be concurrently unintentionally removed. Accordingly, water-soluble vitamins can be removed during continuous renal replacement therapy, and the estimate of the loss is critical to ensure appropriate supplementation. The aim of this work was to develop a simple methodology for a purification step prior to the LC-MS/MS determination of water-soluble vitamins in ultrafiltrate samples. For this purpose, two types of resin and a mix of resins were used as sorbents for the purification step. Moreover, parameters such as the amount of resin and the extraction time were optimized. The LC-MS/MS method was developed and validated for final determination of 11 vitamins. The results demonstrated the high purification capability of DEAE Sephadex resin with recoveries between 65 and 101% for water-soluble vitamins from ultrafiltrate samples. An optimized method was applied to assess the loss of B-group vitamins in patients after 24h of renal replacement therapy. The loss of vitamins B2, B6 pyridoxamine, B6 pyridoxal, B7, B1, and B5 in ultrafiltrates was similar in all patients. In the native ultrafiltrates, vitamins B6 pyridoxine, B9 and B12 were not detected.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Abdominal aortic clamping during aneurysm repair may cause a decrease in splanchnic blood flow and deterioration of gut barrier integrity. Epidural blocks have beneficial effects on vital organs during abdominal surgery, but sparse data are available on the influence on gut permeability during open aortic surgery. The aim of this study was to verify the hypothesis that epidural blocks may have beneficial effects on intestine permeability changes. METHODS Seventy individuals undergoing elective open abdominal aortic aneurysm repair were randomly assigned to receive either balanced anaesthesia (continuous epidural and general anaesthesia, group E&G) or only general anaesthesia (group G). For group E&G, an epidural catheter was inserted into the epidural space before the induction of general anaesthesia. Ropivacaine was used for intraoperative and postoperative blocks. For both groups general anaesthesia was maintained with sevoflurane. For group G, analgesia was provided with remifentanil. The assessments of gut function were based on measurements of the absorption and percentages of urinary excretion of four sugars (m 3-O-methyl-D-glucose, D-xylose, L-rhamnose and lactulose) and the lactulose/rhamnose (L/R) ratio. RESULTS No intergroup differences were observed for sugar recovery or L/R ratio. Significant decreases in 3-O-methyl-D-glucose, D-xylose, and L-rhamnose recoveries were revealed in both examined groups when comparing the results obtained at 12 and 24 hours following the administration of anaesthesia. The rate of blood pressure decrease was significantly higher in group E&G. CONCLUSIONS Aortic clamping during open abdominal aortic repair led to unfavorable changes in intestinal permeability. Epidural block did not attenuate this deterioration.

Abstract
The results of our research on the cuticular and internal lipids of Blattella germanica males provide new information on variation in the composition of the cuticular and internal lipids of B. germanica males after exposure to the presence of the insecticide. gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses were used to identify and quantify the cuticular and internal lipid composition in males and males exposed to insecticide. There were significantly more acids having an even number of carbon atoms in the molecule, and these were also generally in higher concentrations. The following acids were in a higher concentration: C16:0 and C18:1, C18:2, C18:0. In both males and males exposed to insecticide, 24 fatty acids ranging from C6 to C22 were determined. However, there was a significantly higher content of fatty acids in the surface lipids of B. germanica males after exposure to insecticide. Our results indicate a higher content of n-alkanes, sterols, particularly cholesterol, fatty acids, and fatty acid methyl esters in the B. germanica surface after exposure to chlorpyrifos than in males that were not exposed.

Abstract
With the constant development of new ionic liquids, the understanding of the chemical fate of these compounds also needs to be updated. To this effect, the interaction of a number of novel ionic liquids with soils was determined. Therefore, three novel headgroups (ammonium, phosphonium, or pyrrolidinium) with single or quaternary substitution were tested on a variety of soils with high-to-low organic matter content and high-to-low cation exchange capacity, thereby trying to capture the full range of possible soil interactions. It was found that the ionic liquids with single butyl alkyl chain interacted more strongly with the soils (especially with a higher cation exchange capacity), at lower concentrations, than the quad-substituted ionic liquids. However, the quad-substituted ionic liquids interacted more strongly at higher concentrations, due to the double-layer formation, and induced stronger dipole interaction with previously sorbed molecules.

Abstract
The aim of the present report was to evaluate antimicrobial/anti-biofilm activity of 7-(2-oxohexyl)-taxodione, a novel taxodione derivative isolated from n-hexane extract of Salvia austriaca hairy roots. Antimicrobial assays showed that 7-(2-oxohexyl)-taxodione was at least 4 times more active than taxodione against methicillin-susceptible as well against methicillin-resistant staphylococci with MIC of 1.25-2.5 μgml(-1). This compound was less active against vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), on the same level as taxodione (MIC ranged 10.0-20.0 μgml(-1)). The presence of 7-(2-oxohexyl)-taxodione in the culture medium (at MIC, ½ MIC or ¼ MIC) decreased adhesion of staphylococci to abiotic surfaces, which in turn caused a reduction in biofilm formation during 24h, by approximately 25-30%. Also, the extent of established biofilm eradication was found to be significant, although it required an increased concentration of the compound. This is the first report on the antimicrobial activity of this, up to now not known compound, isolated from transformed roots of S. austriaca.

Abstract
Several physico-chemical properties relevant to determine the environmental impact of ionic liquids - aqueous solubility, octanol/water partition coefficient, chromatographically derived lipophilicity and infinite dilution diffusion coefficients in water - were measured in ionic liquids based on pyridinium, ammonium and pyrrolidinium cations with bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide anions. The influence of the presence of hydroxyl or ester groups in the physico-chemical properties of these liquids was checked. It appeared that the presence of functional oxygenated moieties reduces the lipophilicity of ionic liquids and so decreases the risk of bioaccumulation in environment.

Abstract
The composition of cuticular and internal n-alkanes in Lucilia sericata larvae, pupae, and male and female imagines were studied. The cuticular and internal lipid extracts were separated by HPLC-LLSD, after which the hydrocarbon fraction was identified by GC/MS in selected ion monitoring (SIM) and total ion current (TIC) modes. The cuticular lipids of the larvae contained seven n-alkanes from C23 to C31. The major n-alkane in L. sericata larvae was C29 (42.1%). The total cuticular n-alkane content in the cuticular lipids was 31.46 μg g-1 of the insect body. The internal lipids of L. sericata larvae contained five n-alkanes ranged from C25 to C31. The most abundant compound was C27 (61.71 μg g-1 of the insect body). Eighteen n-alkanes from C14 to C31 were identified in the cuticular lipids of the pupae. The most abundant n-alkanes ranged from C25 to C31; those with odd-numbered carbon chains were particularly abundant, the major one being C29:0 (59.5%). Traces of eight cuticular n-alkanes were present. The internal lipids of L. sericata pupae contained five n-alkanes, ranging from C25 to C31. The cuticular lipids of female imagines contained 17 n-alkanes from C12 to C30. Among the cuticular n-alkanes of females, C27 (47.5%) was the most abundant compound. Four n-alkanes, with only odd-numbered carbon chains, were identified in the internal lipids of females. The lipids from both sexes of L. sericata had similar n-alkane profiles. The cuticular lipids of adult males contained 16 n-alkanes ranging from C13 to C31. C27 (47.9%) was the most abundant cuticular n-alkanes in males. The same n-alkanes only with odd-numbered carbon chains and in smaller quantities of C27 (0.1%) were also identified in the internal lipids of males. The highest amounts of total cuticular n-alkanes were detected in males and females of L. sericata (330.4 and 158.93 μg g-1 of the insect body, respectively). The quantities of total cuticular alcohols in larvae and pupae were smaller (31.46 μg g-1 and 42.08 μg g-1, respectively). The internal n-alkane contents of larvae, pupae, and male and female imagines were significantly higher than the cuticular n-alkane contents (153.53, 99.60, 360.06 and 838.76 μg g-1 of the insect body, respectively).

Abstract
Information on the stimulatory and inhibitory effects of cuticular alcohols on growth and virulence of insecticidal fungi is unavailable. Therefore, we set out to describe the content of cuticular and internal alcohols in the body of housefly larvae, pupae, males and females. The total cuticular alcohols in larvae, males and females of Musca domestica were detected in comparable amounts (4.59, 3.95 and 4.03 μg g(-1) insect body, respectively), but occurred in smaller quantities in pupae (2.16 μg g(-1)). The major free alcohol in M. domestica larvae was C(12:0) (70.4%). Internal alcohols of M. domestica larvae were not found. Among cuticular pupae alcohols, C(12:0) (31.0%) was the most abundant. In the internal lipids of pupae, only five alcohols were identified in trace amounts. The most abundant alcohol in males was C(24:0) (57.5%). The percentage content of cuticular C(24:0) in males and females (57.5 and 36.5%, respectively) was significantly higher than that of cuticular lipids in larvae and pupae (0.9 and 5.6%, respectively). Only two alcohols were present in the internal lipids of males in trace amounts (C(18:0) and C(20:0)). The most abundant cuticular alcohols in females were C(24:0) (36.5%) and C(12:0) (26.8%); only two alcohols (C(18:0) and C(20:0)) were detected in comparable amounts in internal lipids (3.61±0.32 and 5.01±0.42 μg g(-1), respectively). For isolated alcohols, antimicrobial activity against 10 reference strains of bacteria and fungi was determined. Individual alcohols showed approximately equal activity against fungal strains. C(14:0) was effective against gram-positive bacteria, whereas gram-negative bacteria were resistant to all tested alcohols. Mixtures of alcohols found in cuticular lipids of larvae, pupae, males and females of M. domestica generally presented higher antimicrobial activity than individual alcohols. In contrast, crude extracts containing both cuticular and internal lipids showed no antifungal activity against the entomopathogenic fungus Conidiobolus coronatus, which efficiently kills adult house flies.

Abstract
GC, GC-MS, and HPLC-LLSD analyses were used to identify and quantify cuticular and internal lipids in males and females of the blow-fly (Lucilia sericata). Sixteen free fatty acids, seven alcohols and cholesterol were identified and quantitatively determined in the cuticular lipids of L. sericata. Cuticular fatty acids ranged from C(6) to C(20) and included unsaturated entities such as 16:1n-9, 18:1n-9, 20:4n-3 and 20:5n-3. Cuticular alcohols (only saturated and even-numbered) ranged from C(12) to C(20) in males and C(10) to C(22) in females. Only one sterol was found in the cuticular lipids of both males and females. 23 free fatty acids, five alcohols and cholesterol were identified in the internal lipids. Internal fatty acids were present in large amounts-7.4 mg/g (female) and 10.1 mg/g (male). Only traces of internal alcohols (from C(14) to C(26) in males, from C(14) to C(22) in females) were found in L. sericata. Large amounts of internal cholesterol were identified in L. sericata males and females (0.49 and 0.97 mg/g of the insect body, respectively).
