The effects of activities of daily living education on the independence and life satisfaction of elders

PURPOSE

The aim of this study is to examine the effect of education on the independence levels and life satisfaction (LS) of the elderly in their activities of daily living (ADL).

FINDINGS

The level of independence in maintaining the ADLs of the elderly in the intervention group that received training increased compared to the elderly group that was not trained. LS increased in the intervention group that received training. the number of education is an effective factor in LS. As the number of education increased, the level of LS increased in the intervention group.

CONCLUSION

There is a linear relationship between independence in maintaining ADLs and LS in the elderly, and as the level of independence increases in the elderly, their LS also increases. In the study, there is a significant relationship between ADL and LS before and after education, and education high affected activity levels and LS.

Investigation of Effect on Activities of Daily Living and Symptoms in Hemodilaysis Patients

Background

Hemodialysis patients develop many physical and psychosocial symptoms associated with chronic kidney disease and its treatment. The presence of these symptoms also adversely affects an individual's activities of daily living.

Aim

The aim of this study was to evaluate the symptoms seen in hemodilaysis patients and to examine the effect on daily living activities.

Materials and Methods

This was a cross-sectional descriptive study carried out on 126 patients in two dialysis centers in Turkey. Patient Information Form, Dialysis Symptom Index (DSI) and Katz Activities of Daily Living Scale (KADL) were used as data collection tools.

Results

The most frequent symptoms described by the patients undergoing hemodialysis were tiredness, sadness, and muscle-joint pain. The mean of the DSI was 30.03 (SD: 14.7). There was a statistically significant relationship between dialysis symptom index and disease duration and hemodialysis vintage (P < 0.05). In addition, the mean score of the Patients' KADL was 14.48 (SD: 2.55). Eighty-two (65.1%) patients maintain their daily living activities independently. On the other hand, 26.2% of the dialysis patients maintained their daily living activities as semi-dependent, while 8.7% were totally dependent on others. A statistically significant relationship was found between KADL, marital status, year of dialysis and presence of another chronic disease (P < 0.05). There was statistically significant relationship between DSI and KADL. In hemodilaysis patients, as the DSI score increased, the dependence on daily living activities increased.

Conclusion

The symptoms seen in patients have a negative effect on maintaining their daily living activities. Health workers should perform symptom evaluation in patients undergoing dialysis. Thus, each patient-specific individualized care plan should be designed for effective management of these symptoms in patients. Effective symptom management will be effective in maintaining patients' daily living activities.

Knowledge of and attitudes toward tuberculosis of Turkish nursing and midwifery students

AIM

The aim of the study was to describe the level of knowledge and the attitudes of Turkish nursing and midwifery students toward tuberculosis in an attempt to understand and determine whether there is a need for improvement in nursing and midwifery education regarding tuberculosis.

METHOD

The research is a descriptive study conducted at four nursing or midwifery schools in Turkey. The sample was composed of 615 students who were first-, second-, third-, or fourth-year nursing and midwifery students. Data were collected using the Knowledge and Attitudes toward Treatment and Control of Tuberculosis Questionnaire.

RESULTS

The level of tuberculosis knowledge was poor [7.22±1.92 (range: 2-9)]. The attitudes of nursing and midwifery students toward tuberculosis were generally negative. Only 5.9% of the sample would prefer to care for patients with tuberculosis. Students who received tuberculosis lectures/education had higher levels of knowledge and more positive attitudes toward tuberculosis than their peers who did not receive such education.

CONCLUSION

In order to fight effectively against tuberculosis, positive attitudes toward tuberculosis must be developed among health care teams, and awareness of tuberculosis via theoretical and practical education, starting from the initial semesters of the professional education, must be increased.

Fatigue and disability in elderly patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

The purpose of this study was to describe the prevalence and severity of fatigue and to investigate relationships between fatigue, and disability in elderly COPD patients. This descriptive and analytical study was conducted on 98 patients. Three instruments were used: Personal information form (PIF), visual analog scale for fatigue (VAS-F) and brief disability questionnaire (BDQ). The statistical analyses were used in order to evaluate the data: Student's t-test, Kruskall-Wallis test, Pearson correlation coefficient calculation and logistic regression analysis. All of patients in the sample experienced fatigue. The level of fatigue and disability experienced by the patients with COPD was high, their energy level was low. It was determined that as COPD patients' fatigue increases their disability also increases, that there are relationships between fatigue and marital status and that there are relationships between disability and gender. Furthermore, in this study significant differences were found in COPD patients' VAS-F and BDQ scores for some symptoms of COPD, such as dyspnea, fatigue, cough and sputum. The results of the study indicated that high levels of fatigue are experienced which impacts on patients' functional condition and needs to be professionally assessed managed.
