Electrospray Film Deposition for Solvent-Elimination Infrared Spectroscopy

The application of electrospray (ES) for quantitative transfer of analytes from solution to an internal reflection element for analysis by attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR FT-IR) spectroscopy has been developed in this work. The ES ATR FT-IR method is evaluated with non-volatile and semi-volatile organic and inorganic compounds dissolved in pure organic solvents or organics in a mixture with water. The technique demonstrates the capability for rapid solvent evaporation from dilute solutions, facilitating the creation of thin films that allow ATR FT-IR to generate transmission-mode-like spectra. Electrospray ATR FT-IR with multiple reflections displays a linear response ( R² = 0.95-0.99) in absorbance with the deposited mass and instrumental detection limit < 100 ng, which demonstrates potential for quantitative applications. The method is applicable when crystalline substances are present, even though the formation of particles restricts the upper limit of mass loadings relative to substances forming homogeneous films. In addition to the solvent, semi-volatile compounds can evaporate during the ES process; the magnitude of losses will depend on solution composition and temperature.

Experiences in medical coverage of airport disasters at Logan International Airport in Boston

Experiences in providing medical coverage for airport disasters at Logan International Airport (LIA) in Boston are presented from 1963-1982. The paper traces the history of the medical facility at LIA and describes the factors to be considered in planning disaster coverage at a major airport. It analyzes the aircraft accidents that have occurred at LIA using the type of accident as a guide for medical planning. It delineates the various phases of aircraft emergency procedures and the medical action that follows such occurrences. Various components of medical action, from the time of notification to rescue and triage, are presented discussing the need for each component. The Medical Action Flow chart and alternate schematic arrangements for rescue, triage, and evacuation are presented in sketches. The need for an overall Medical Command and the concepts of Primary Triage and Secondary Triage are explained.

Epidemiology of respiratory allergic disorders in a geriatric age group

One hundred forty-eight patients with a respiratory allergic disorder between the ages of 60 and 84 were studied for one year. Emotional crises played an important role in the triggering of their symptoms. Heredity probably was as prevalent in this age group as in younger individuals. In most of the patients the first symptoms of their illness appeared in the years between 21 and 50. House dust was the most common allergenic factor in the causation of symptoms. This was favorable response and reduced the amount of supplemental medication required for symptom relief.
