Abstract
PURPOSE Thyroid hormone withdrawal (THW) in preparation for radioactive iodine therapy (RIT) may lead to hyponatremia and hyperkalemia because hypothyroidism reduces the glomerular filtration rate. Using recombinant human thyrotropin (rhTSH) may avoid these changes; however, these two preparation methods have not been compared in the literature. The purpose of this study was to reveal whether THW and rhTSH as preparation methods for RIT affect serum electrolytes differently. We also evaluated clinical factors influencing the onset of hyponatremia and hyperkalemia during RIT. MATERIALS AND METHODS From April 2005 to December 2020, we analyzed 278 patients with thyroid cancer who received RIT. The patients were classified into two groups based on the preparation method, and renal function and serum electrolytes were compared between the groups. We also evaluated clinical factors that may affect overt hyponatremia (serum sodium level < 134 mmol/L) and hyperkalemia (serum potassium level ≥ 5.0 mmol/L). RESULTS Serum sodium and chloride levels in the THW group were significantly lower than those in the rhTSH group (p < 0.001 and p = 0.002, respectively). In contrast, the serum potassium level in the THW group was significantly higher than that in the rhTSH group (p = 0.008). As for clinical factors that may influence hyponatremia, age and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) were significantly associated with serum sodium level in the univariate analysis (p = 0.033 and p = 0.006, respectively). In the multivariate analysis, only age was significantly associated with serum sodium level (p = 0.030). Regarding hyperkalemia, distant metastases, the preparation method and eGFR were significantly associated with the serum potassium level in the univariate analysis (p = 0.005, p = 0.005 and p = 0.001, respectively). In the multivariate analysis, only eGFR was significantly associated with hyperkalemia (p = 0.019). CONCLUSION THW and rhTSH affect serum sodium and potassium levels differently. Renal function may be risk factors for hyperkalemia, whereas older age may be a risk factor for hyponatremia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to evaluate the factors that affect the local control (LC) of bone metastases from radioresistant carcinomas (renal cell carcinoma, hepatocellular carcinoma [HCC], and colorectal carcinoma [CRC]) treated with palliative external-beam radiotherapy (EBRT). METHODS AND MATERIALS Between January 2010 and December 2020, 211 bone metastases in 134 patients were treated with EBRT in two hospitals (a cancer center and university hospital). Based on follow-up CT, these cases were reviewed retrospectively to evaluate LC at the EBRT site. RESULTS The median EBRT dose (BED10) was 39.0 Gy (range, 14.4-66.3 Gy). The median follow-up time of the imaging studies was 6 months (range, 1-107 months). The 0.5-year overall survival and LC rates of the EBRT sites were 73% and 73%, respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that the primary sites (HCC/CRC), low EBRT dose (BED10) (≤ 39.0 Gy), and non-administration of post-EBRT bone modifying agents (BMAs) and/or antineoplastic agents (ATs) were statistically significant factors that negatively affected the LC of EBRT sites. In the absence of BMAs or ATs, the EBRT dose (BED10) escalation from 39.0 Gy improved the LC of EBRT sites. Based on ATs administration, the LC of EBRT sites was significantly affected by tyrosine kinase inhibitors and/or immune checkpoint inhibitors. CONCLUSIONS Dose escalation improves LC in bone metastases from radioresistant carcinomas. Higher EBRT doses are needed to treat patients for whom few effective systemic therapies remain available.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the expected prognosis and factors affecting local control (LC) of the bone metastatic sites treated with palliative external beam radiotherapy (RT). Between December 2010 and April 2019, 420 cases (male/female = 240/180; median age [range]: 66 [12-90] years) with predominantly osteolytic bone metastases received RT and were evaluated. LC was evaluated by follow-up computed tomography (CT) image. Median RT doses (BED10) were 39.0 Gy (range, 14.4-71.7 Gy). The 0.5-year overall survival and LC of RT sites were 71% and 84%, respectively. Local recurrence on CT images was observed in 19% (n = 80) of the RT sites, and the median recurrence time was 3.5 months (range, 1-106 months). In univariate analysis, abnormal laboratory data before RT (platelet count, serum albumin, total bilirubin, lactate dehydrogenase, or serum calcium level), high-risk primary tumor sites (colorectal, esophageal, hepatobiliary/pancreatic, renal/ureter, and non-epithelial cancers), no antineoplastic agents (ATs) administration after RT, and no bone modifying agents (BMAs) administration after RT were significantly unfavorable factors for both survival and LC of RT sites. Sex (male), performance status (≥3), and RT dose (BED10) (<39.0 Gy) were significantly unfavorable factors for only survival, and age (≥70 years) and bone cortex destruction were significantly unfavorable factors for only LC of RT sites. In multivariate analysis, only abnormal laboratory data before RT influenced both unfavorable survival and LC of RT sites. Performance status (≥3), no ATs administration after RT, RT dose (BED10) (<39.0 Gy), and sex (male) were significantly unfavorable factors for survival, and primary tumor sites and BMAs administration after RT were significantly unfavorable factors for LC of RT sites. In conclusion, laboratory data before RT was important factor both prognosis and LC of bone metastases treated with palliative RT. At least in patients with abnormal laboratory data before RT, palliative RT seemed to be focused on the only pain relief.

Abstract
Advancement in systemic therapy has increased the importance of local control (LC) of bone metastatic sites treated with radiotherapy in intermediate-term survivors (surviving ≥1 year). To establish individualized radiotherapy for bone metastases, factors affecting LC of bone metastases treated with traditional fractionated moderate dose palliative radiotherapy (FMRT) in intermediate-term survivors were evaluated. Between January 2010 and December 2019, 317 lesions in 240 patients treated with FMRT for bone metastases surviving for at least 1 year and followed-up with CT for at least 6 months were reviewed retrospectively. The median survival and radiographic follow-up times were 24 months (range, 12-123 months) and 20 months (range, 1-119 months), respectively. The median FMRT dose [biologically effective dose (BED)10] was 39.0 Gy (range, 28.0-71.7 Gy). Multivariate analysis revealed that age (≥70 years), non-vertebral bone metastasis, bone metastasis from moderate and unfavorable primary tumor sites (esophageal, colorectal, hepatobiliary/pancreatic, kidney/ureter and sarcoma/melanoma cancers), and no administration of post-FMRT bone-modifying agents (BMAs) were unfavorable factors for LC of bone metastasis. The 2-year LC rates for FMRT doses (BED10) ≤39.0 Gy and >39.0 Gy were 90 and 87%, respectively. The 2-year LC rates of patients administered and not administered post-FMRT antineoplastic agents (ATs) were 91 and 78%, respectively. The sites of bone metastasis and primary tumors, and post-FMRT BMAs were factors associated with LC of bone metastasis in long-term survivors. However, a FMRT dose (BED10) ≥39.0 Gy and post-FMRT ATs were not significant factors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Over the past decades, remarkable advancements in systemic drug therapy have improved the prognosis of patients with bone metastases. Individualization is required in external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) for bone metastases according to the patient's prognosis. To establish individualized EBRT for bone metastases, we investigated factors that affect the local control (LC) of bone metastases. METHODS Between January 2010 and December 2019, 536 patients received EBRT for 751 predominantly osteolytic bone metastases. LC at EBRT sites was evaluated with a follow-up computed tomography. The median EBRT dose was biologically effective dose (BED10) (39.0) (range of BED10: 14.4-71.7 Gy). RESULTS The median follow-up time and median time of computed tomography follow-up were 11 (range 1-123) months and 6 (range 1-119) months, respectively. The 0.5- and 1-year overall survival rates were 73% and 54%, respectively. The 0.5- and 1-year LC rates were 83% and 79%, respectively. In multivariate analysis, higher age (≥ 70 years), non-vertebral bone metastases, unfavorable primary tumor sites (esophageal cancer, colorectal cancer, hepatobiliary/pancreatic cancer, renal/ureter cancer, sarcoma, melanoma, and mesothelioma), lower EBRT dose (BED10 < 39.0 Gy), and non-administration of bone-modifying agents (BMAs)/antineoplastic agents after EBRT were significantly unfavorable factors for LC of bone metastases. There was no statistically significant difference in the LC between BED10 = 39.0 and BED10 > 39.0 Gy. CONCLUSIONS Regarding tumor-related factors, primary tumor sites and the sites of bone metastases were significant for the LC. As for treatment-related factors, lower EBRT doses (BED10 < 39.0 Gy) and non-administration of BMAs/antineoplastic agents after EBRT were associated with poor LC. Dose escalation from BED10 = 39.0 Gy did not necessarily improve LC.

Abstract
We investigated the prognostic significance and treatment outcomes of pretreatment inflammatory response markers for locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the external auditory canal (EAC) and middle ear (ME). Between July 2003 and July 2019, 21 patients with SCC of the EAC (n = 18) or ME (n = 3) who received radiotherapy with or without surgery or systemic therapy (radiotherapy alone [n = 2], radiotherapy + systemic therapy [n = 6], radiotherapy + surgery [n = 7], radiotherapy + surgery + systemic therapy [n = 6]) were retrospectively examined. The median radiation dose was 66.0 (range, 50.4-70.0) Gy, with daily fractions of 1.8-2.0 Gy. The median follow-up period was 25 months (range, 6-137). The two-year overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), and locoregional control (LC) rates were 61%, 48%, and 55%, respectively. OS, PFS, and LC did not differ significantly according to patient- (age, sex), tumor- (Pittsburgh stage, pretreatment neurological findings), and treatment-related (surgery or systemic therapy, radiation dose, prophylactic neck irradiation) factors. Conversely, there were significant differences in OS, PFS, and LC between patients with high and low pretreatment C-reactive protein-to-albumin ratios (p = 0.002, 0.003, and 0.004, respectively). OS also differed significantly between patients with high and low pretreatment neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratios (NLR; p = 0.037). Other inflammatory response markers, including platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and albumin-to-globulin ratio (AGR), did not influence OS, PFS, or LC. Our findings suggest that pretreatment C-reactive protein-to-albumin ratio and NLRs have a significant impact on treatment outcomes in patients with locally advanced SCC of the EAC and ME.

Abstract
In the present study, cellular lattice structures for implant applications are reported for the first-time incorporating copper directly by in-situ alloying in the laser powder bed fusion process. The aim to incorporate 3 at.% Cu into Ti6Al4V(ELI) is selected for improved antibacterial properties while maintaining appropriate mechanical properties. Previously, topologically optimized Ti6Al4V(ELI) lattice structures were successfully designed, manufactured and studied for implant applications. The development of a new alloy produced by in-situ alloying of elemental powder mixture of Ti6Al4V(ELI) and pure Cu powders was used here for the production of identical lattice structures with improved antibacterial properties. One of the same as-designed CAD models was used for the manufacturing of these lattices compared to previous work on pure Ti6Al4V(ELI) lattices, making direct comparison of mechanical properties possible. Similar manufacturability highlights the applicability of this alloying technique to other lattice designs. Microstructural characterization was performed by optical and electron microscopies, as well as microCT. Mechanical characterization was performed by means of compression tests and hardness measurements. Results showed that in-situ alloying with copper leads to the formation of localized Cu-rich regions, refinement of martensitic phase and the formation of CuTi2 intermetallic precipitates, which increased the hardness and strength of the material. Deviations in wall thickness between the as-designed and as-manufactured lattices led to anisotropy of the mechanical properties of the lattices. Higher compressive strength values were obtained when thicker walls were oriented along the loading direction. Nevertheless, alloying with Cu had a higher impact on the compressive strength of lattice structure than the wall thickness deviations. The direct in-situ alloying of copper in Ti6Al4V(ELI) is a promising route for direct manufacturing of antibacterial implants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To evaluate the treatment outcomes of external-beam radiotherapy (EBRT) with or without radioactive iodine therapy (RAIT) for metastatic or recurrent lesions of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC). METHODS Between August 1997 and March 2018, 73 lesions (distant metastases, 50; regional lymph-node metastases, 17; postoperative tumor-bed recurrences, 6) in 36 patients that had received EBRT with or without RAIT were reviewed. Doses of EBRT were 8-70 Gy (median 40 Gy). Seventeen patients received RAIT after EBRT. RESULTS Median follow-up time of imaging studies was 14 months (range 1-110 months). Two-year overall survival rates and control rates of EBRT sites were 71% and 62%, respectively. Two-year control rates for EBRT of < 30 Gy (n = 7), 30 Gy (n = 13), 31-49 Gy (n = 25), 50 Gy (n = 20), and > 50 Gy (n = 8) were 0%, 56%, 53%, 79%, and 100%, respectively. There were statistically significant differences in control rates between < 30 Gy and 30 Gy (p = 0.003), and between 50 Gy and > 50 Gy (p = 0.037). Control rates of > 50 Gy were significantly better compared to ≤ 50 Gy (p = 0.021). Two-year control rates with (n = 28) and without (n = 45) post-EBRT RAIT were 89% and 45%, respectively (p = 0.009). In multivariate analysis, EBRT of > 50 Gy and post-EBRT RAIT were significant independent factors for favorable control of EBRT sites (hazard ratio [HR], 5.72; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.21-27.1; p = 0.028 and HR, 2.98; 95% CI, 1.28-6.98; p = 0.012, respectively). CONCLUSION EBRT of > 50 Gy and post-EBRT RAIT appeared to be useful for long-term control of EBRT sites for metastatic or recurrent lesions of DTC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The present cross-sectional study investigated the associations between low birthweight (LBW), high birthweight, preterm birth (PTB), postterm birth, small for gestational age (SGA), and large for gestational age (LGA) and the prevalence of wheeze and asthma in Japanese children aged three years (age range, 33-54 months; mean age, 38.7 months). METHODS Study subjects were 6364 children. A questionnaire was used to collect all data. Wheeze and asthma were defined according to the criteria of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood. RESULTS The prevalence values of wheeze and asthma were 19.5% and 7.7%, respectively. Of the 6364 subjects, 8.8% were classified as LBW (<2500g), 90.4% as normal birthweight, 0.8% as high birthweight (≥4000g), 4.8% as PTB (<37 weeks), 94.8% as term birth, 0.4% as postterm birth (≥42 weeks), 7.8% as SGA (<10th percentile), 82.5% as appropriate for gestational age, and 9.7% as LGA (>90th percentile). Compared with term birth, PTB was independently positively associated with wheeze and asthma: the adjusted ORs (95% CI) were 1.47 (1.11-1.92) and 1.52 (1.02-2.20), respectively. An independent positive association was shown between PTB and wheeze only in boys; the interaction between PTB and sex was significant. Such an interaction between PTB and sex was not seen for asthma. No evident associations were observed between LBW, high birthweight, postterm birth, SGA, or LGA and wheeze or asthma. CONCLUSIONS This is the first study in Japan to show that PTB, but not LBW or SGA, was significantly positively associated with childhood wheeze and asthma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To evaluate the prognostic value of tumor growth patterns on magnetic resonance (MR) images in patients with locally advanced cervical cancer (LACC) treated with definitive radiotherapy or concurrent chemoradiotherapy (RT/CCRT). METHODS We retrospectively reviewed 102 patients with LACC who received definitive RT/CCRT and who underwent MR imaging before RT/CCRT. Growth patterns on pretreatment T2-weighted MR images were classified into expansive or infiltrative type according to tumor morphologic patterns in the myometrium and/or parametrial space. RESULTS The median age was 60 years (range 26-90 years). The median follow-up time was 47.7 months (range 5.7-123 months). The numbers of patients with stages IB, II, III, and IVA were 17, 39, 43, and 3, respectively. The 3-year overall survival (OS) rates for stages IB, II, III, and IV were 87%, 76%, 74%, and 67%, respectively. Regarding growth patterns on MR images, 31 were of expansive type and 71 were of infiltrative type. The infiltrative type was significantly associated with lower OS and locoregional recurrence-free survival (LRRFS) than the expansive type (3-year OS, 70% vs. 93%, p = 0.003; 3-year LRRFS, 64% vs. 94%, p = 0.001). On multivariate analysis, infiltrative tumor growth patterns were a significant independent factor for low OS (hazard ratio [HR], 3.81; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.26-16.7; p = 0.015) and low LRRFS (HR, 4.27; 95% CI 1.43-18.5; p = 0.007). CONCLUSION Tumor growth patterns on MR images could be an indicator of survival and locoregional control in patients with LACC treated with definitive RT/CCRT.

Abstract
Gene duplication in plants occurs via several different mechanisms, including whole genome duplication, and the copied genes acquire various forms and types. The cellulose synthase (CesA) family functions in cellulose synthesis complex (CSC) formation, which is involved in the synthesis of primary and secondary cell walls in plants. In the genome of Populus, 17 CesA have been annotated, and some of them appeared through whole genome duplication. The nucleotide sequence of the duplicated genes changed during subsequent evolution, and functional differentiation of genes might have occurred. To gain insight into the evolutionary fate of the duplicated CesA, expression analysis with quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reactions and promoter-reporter assays was performed on three duplicated gene pairs whose products have been reported to form a single CSC. Changes in expression of each gene at different developmental stages were detected and divergent expression patterns in different organs and tissues observed between the gene pairs. Among the tested genes, expression of PttCesA3-C was apparently lower than that of its counterpart, PttCesA3-D. The results suggest that the six CesA are approaching sub-functionalisation or non-functionalisation. Furthermore, the level of functionalisation may vary among the three pairs of genes, and functional specialisation of each CesA should have been achieved, at least partially, through differences in expression of genes.

Abstract
Organogenesis is a self-organizing process of multiple cells in three-dimensional (3D) space, where macroscopic tissue deformations are robustly regulated by multicellular autonomy. It is clear that this robust regulation requires cells to sense and modulate 3D tissue formation across different scales, but its underlying mechanisms are still unclear. To address this question, we developed a versatile computational model of 3D multicellular dynamics at single-cell resolution and combined it with the 3D culture system of pluripotent stem cell-derived optic-cup organoid. The complementary approach enabled quantitative prediction of morphogenesis and its corresponding verification and elucidated that the macroscopic 3D tissue deformation is fed back to individual cellular force generations via mechanosensing. We hereby conclude that mechanical force plays a key role as a feedback regulator to establish the robustness of organogenesis.

Abstract
Pericardial effusion is an important late toxicity after concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) for locally advanced esophageal cancer. We investigated the clinical and dosimetric factors that were related to pericardial effusion among patients with thoracic esophageal cancer who were treated with definitive CCRT using the two opposed fields technique (TFT) or the four-field technique (FFT), as well as the effectiveness of FFT. During 2007-2015, 169 patients with middle and/or lower thoracic esophageal cancer received definitive CCRT, and 94 patients were evaluable (51 FFT cases and 43 TFT cases). Pericardial effusion was observed in 74 patients (79%) and appeared at 1-18.5 months (median: 5.25 months) after CCRT. The 1-year incidences of pericardial effusions were 73.2% and 76.7% in the FFT and TFT groups, respectively (P = 0.6395). The mean doses to the pericardium were 28.6 Gy and 31.8 Gy in the FFT and TFT groups, respectively (P = 0.0259), and the V40 Gy proportions were 33.5% and 48.2% in the FFT and TFT groups, respectively (P < 0.0001). Grade 3 pericardial effusion was not observed in patients with a pericardial V40 Gy of <40%, or in patients who were treated using the FFT. Although the mean pericardial dose and V40 Gy in the FFT group were smaller than those in the TFT group, the incidences of pericardial effusion after CCRT were similar in both groups. As symptomatic pericardial effusion was not observed in patients with a pericardial V40 Gy of <40% or in the FFT group, it appears that FFT with a V40 Gy of <40% could help minimize symptomatic pericardial effusion.

Abstract
The authors report the results of an indirect comparison of the standards of absorbed dose to water in high-energy photon beams from a clinical linac and (60)Co radiation beam performed between the National Metrology Institute of Japan (NMIJ) and the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA). Three ionisation chambers were calibrated by the NMIJ in April and June 2013 and by the ARPANSA in May 2013. The average ratios of the calibration coefficients for the three ionisation chambers obtained by the NMIJ to those obtained by the ARPANSA were 0.9994, 1.0040 and 1.0045 for 6-, 10- and 15-MV (18 MV at the ARPANSA) high-energy photon beams, respectively. The relative standard uncertainty of the value was 7.2 × 10(-3). The ratio for (60)Co radiation was 0.9986(66), which is consistent with the results published in the key comparison of BIPM.RI(I)-K4.

Abstract
The striatum is a major target of cerebral cortical output. The cortico-striatal projection has been well described, however, the neurochemical changes that occur in the striatum after prolonged cortical hyperactivation remain to be investigated. In this study, extracellular levels of glutamate, GABA, and alanine levels were measured in the dorsal striatum using microdialysis in anesthetized mice at resting condition and during 4-aminopyridine (4-AP)-induced cortical seizures. After topical application of 4-AP on the primary motor cortex that induced cortical seizures, the extracellular level of striatal GABA increased by 40% in 60 min. By contrast, the extracellular level of striatal glutamate decreased by 20%. Moreover, the surface amounts of striatal glutamate/aspartate transporter (GLAST) and glutamate transporter 1 (GLT-1), the major astrocytic high-affinity glutamate transporters, tended to increase by cortical seizures in 60 min, suggesting a recruitment of the glutamate transporters from internal stores. 4-AP also resulted in a steady increase of alanine levels which are thought to reflect glutamate and pyruvate metabolism in neurons and astrocytes. These observations possibly delineate adaptive changes of striatal metabolism by severe cortical seizures.

Abstract
The signal current from an ionisation chamber with a PMMA build-up cap decreases with irradiation time due to electric fields produced by positive charges induced on the cap. In the present study, it was confirmed that the signal current decreases faster for irradiation using narrower (60)Co gamma-ray beams. This is because the number of secondary electrons that are emitted from surrounding materials and penetrate the build-up cap is smaller in a narrower gamma-ray beam, so that fewer positive charges are neutralised. The ionisation chamber was first subjected to continuous gamma-ray irradiation for 24 h, following which it was irradiated with shorter periodic gamma-ray bursts while measuring the current signal. This allowed the coefficients of positive charge accumulation and dissipation to be determined. It was found that the dissipation coefficient has a large constant value during gamma-ray irradiation and decreases asymptotically to a small value after irradiation is stopped. From the coefficients, the minimum signal current was calculated, which is the value when accumulation and dissipation balance each other under continuous irradiation. The time required for the signal current to recover following irradiation was also calculated.

Abstract
A primary standard for the absorbed dose rate to water in a ⁶⁰Co radiation field has been newly established at the National Metrology Institute of Japan. This primary standard combines the calorimetric measurements using a graphite calorimeter with the ionometric measurements using a thick-walled graphite cavity ionisation chamber. The calorimeter is operated in the constant temperature mode using AC Wheatstone bridges. The absorbed dose rate to water was determined to be 12 mGy s⁻¹ at a point of 1 m from the radiation source and at a water depth of 5 g cm⁻². The uncertainty on the calibration coefficient in terms of the absorbed dose to water of an ionisation chamber using this standard was estimated to be 0.39 % (k=1).

Abstract
The signal current from a thimble ionisation chamber with a build-up cap made of an insulator decreases by about 0.41 % after being irradiated for 17 h at an air kerma rate of 41 Gy h(-1) by a collimated (60)Co gamma-ray beam in air. In contrast, the signal current remains constant when the thimble ionisation chamber is irradiated in a water phantom. During irradiation, positive charge is considered to accumulate near the outer surface of the build-up cap where electron equilibrium is not achieved. Secondary electrons travelling in the build-up cap and the chamber wall toward the ionisation volume are decelerated by the electric field generated by the positive charge. Consequently, the signal current decreases with increasing charge accumulation because some secondary electrons are prevented from entering the ionisation volume. In the water phantom, electron equilibrium is established in and around the ionisation chamber and charge does not accumulate. To confirm this hypothesis, the signal current was measured for an ionisation chamber in air with a build-up cap wrapped with Al foil and covered with PMMA tubes. Electron equilibrium was established over the build-up cap because the tubes were thicker than the secondary electron range. The signal current decreased with increasing positive voltage applied to the Al foil. It was estimated from the results that positive charges equivalent to a voltage of over 6 kV applied to the Al foil accumulated during irradiation. The signal current was also measured for an ionisation chamber with a metal build-up cap and for an ionisation chamber with a wall and build-up cap made of conductive plastic.

Abstract
The signal charge from a free air ionisation chamber for the measurement of air kerma and exposure consists of not only the charge of ion pairs produced by secondary electrons (i.e. photoelectrons, Compton electrons and Auger electrons), but also the charge of the secondary electrons and single and multiple charged ions formed by the release of the secondary electrons. In the present work, correction factors for air kerma and exposure for the charge of the secondary electrons and ions were calculated for photons with energies in the range from 1 to 400 keV. The effects of an increase in the W value of air for low-energy electrons were also taken into consideration. It was found that the correction factors for air kerma and exposure have a maximum value near a photon energy of 30 keV; in the lower energy region, the correction factor for exposure monotonically decreases with a decrease in photon energy except for a small dip due to K-edge absorption by argon atoms in air. The values of the correction factors were found to be 0.9951 and 0.9892, respectively, for a spectrum with a mean energy of 7.5 keV, the reference X-ray spectrum with the lowest mean energy in ISO 4037-1. The air kerma correction is smaller than that for exposure, because for air kerma the signal due to the charge of secondary electrons and ions is partly compensated by the decrease in the number of ion pairs produced by the secondary electrons due to the increase of the W value of air for lower energy electrons.

Abstract
Haemolysin (VMH) is a virulent factor produced by Vibrio mimicus, a human pathogen that causes diarrhoea. As intestinal epithelial cells are the primary targets of haemolysin, we investigated its effects on ion transport in human colonic epithelial Caco-2 cells. VMH increased the cellular short circuit current (Isc), used to estimated ion fluxes, and 125I efflux of the cells. The VMH-induced increases in Isc and 125I efflux were suppressed by depleting Ca2+ from the medium or by pretreating the cells with BAPTA-AM or by Rp-adenosin 3',5'-cyclic monophosphorothioate triethylammonium salt (Rp-cAMPS). The Cl- channel inhibitors 4,4'-disothiocyanatostibene-2,2'-disulfonic acid (DIDS), glybenclamide, and 5-nitro-2-(3-phenylpropylamino)benzoic acid (NPPB) suppressed the VMH-induced increases in Isc and 125I efflux. Moreover, VMH increased the intracellular concentrations of Ca2+ and cAMP. Thus, VMH stimulates Caco-2 cells to secrete Cl- by activating both Ca2+ -dependent and cAMP-dependent Cl- secretion mechanisms. VMH forms ion-permeable pores in the lipid bilayer that are non-selectively permeable to small ions. However, the ion permeability of these pores was not inhibited by glybenclamide and DIDS, and VMH did not change the cell membrane potential. These observations indicate that the pores formed on the cell membrane by VMH are unlikely to be involved in VMH-induced Cl- secretion. Notably, VMH stimulated fluid accumulation in the iliac loop test that was fully suppressed by a combination of DIDS and glybenclamide. Thus, Ca2+-dependent and cAMP-dependent Cl- secretion may be important therapeutic targets with regard to the diarrhoea that is induced by Vibrio mimicus.

Abstract
We previously reported that the 78-kDa outer membrane receptor for ferrioxamine B is induced in iron-starved Vibrio vulnificus cells when desferrioxamine B was supplied exogenously. Based on its N-terminal amino acid sequence, a candidate gene for the ferrichrome B receptor was detected in the V. vulnificus CMCP6 genomic database. Here, two contiguous genes, named desR and desA, encoding a member of the AraC family of transcriptional activators and the ferrioxamine B receptor, respectively, were cloned from V. vulnificus M2799 and characterized. Primer extension analysis mapped the iron-regulated transcription initiation sites for desR and desA, and demonstrated involvement of desferrioxamine B in the induction of desA transcription. Insertion mutation of desR resulted in no production of DesA under iron-limiting conditions even in the presence of desferrioxamine B. The DesA production under the same conditions was restored to wild-type levels when the desR mutant was complemented with desR in trans. These results suggest that the desR gene is required for desferrioxamine B-inducible production of DesA in iron-starved cells.

Abstract
Hippocampal pyramidal neurons and granule neurons of adult male rats are equipped with a complete machinery for the synthesis of pregnenolone, dehydroepiandrosterone, testosterone, dihydrotestosterone and 17beta-estradiol. Both estrogens and androgens are synthesized in male hippocampus. These brain steroids are synthesized by cytochrome P450s (P450scc, P45017alpha and P450arom), hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases and reductases from endogenous cholesterol. The expression levels of enzymes are as low as 1/300-1/1000 of those in endocrine organs. Synthesis is dependent on the acute Ca(2+) influx upon neuron-neuron communication via NMDA receptors. Estradiol is particularly important because estradiol rapidly modulates neuronal synaptic transmission such as long-term potentiation via synaptic estrogen receptors. Xenoestrogens may also act via estrogen-driven signaling pathways.

Abstract
Ion losses due to initial recombination, volume recombination, and back diffusion were each determined by measurements and calculations for different size cylindrical ionization chambers and spherical ionization chambers. By measuring signal currents from these ionization chambers irradiated with (60)Co gamma rays, two groups of ion losses were obtained. (Group 1) Ion loss due to initial recombination and diffusion, which changes proportionally to the inverse of the voltage applied to the ionization chambers; (and group 2) ion loss due to volume recombination, which changes proportionally to the inverse of the square of the applied voltage. The diffusion loss was obtained separately by computing electric field distributions in the ionization chambers. It was found that diffusion loss is larger than initial recombination loss for the cylindrical ionization chambers and vise versa for the spherical ionization chambers.

Abstract
Mycolic acid-containing actinomycetes (mycolata) are considered the causative agents of foaming of activated sludge and scum formation in activated sludge treatment plants. In this study, the production of anti-Gordonia amarae mycolic acid polyclonal antibodies was investigated. Rabbits were immunized with a conjugate of keyhole limpet hemocyanin and mycolic acids of G. amarae, which contained 48 to 56 carbon atoms (average, 52.0). Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) demonstrated that the polyclonal antibodies could recognize cells of G. amarae ranging from 0.1 to 10 microg. The antibodies also reacted with other tested mycolata strains belonging to the genera Nocardia, Rhodococcus, Dietzia, Mycobacterium and Tsukamurella. However, reactivities against other gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria not containing mycolic acid were negligible or much lower. The results indicate that the anti-G. amarae mycolic acid antibodies show a reactivity selective for a group of mycolata involved in the foaming of activated sludge.

Abstract
A signal current from a cylindrical ionisation chamber with an ionisation volume of 62.7 cm3, 40 mm in diameter and 50 mm long, peaked when the chamber was lixed at 0 degrees and at 90 degrees in 137Cs and 60Co gamma ray fields for source-chamber distances of 1 m and 2 m. A smaller ionisation chamber showed a small peak at 0 degrees in both fields but not at 90 degrees. However, calculations indicated that the signal current from the smaller chamber would also show a peak at 90 degrees in a 137Cs point-source gamma ray field. Peaks occur because gamma rays attenuate along the cylindrical side wall or along the end walls when a chamber is tilted slightly from 0 degrees or 90 degrees and the direction of the gamma ray beam agrees with the plane of one of these walls. These facts suggest the need for care in the common practice of measuring and calculating responses for cylindrical ionisation chambers fixed perpendicular to gamma ray beams.

Abstract
Neurosteroidogenesis has not been well elucidated due to the very low level of steroidogenic proteins in the brain. Here we report the first demonstration of the neuronal localization of neurosteroidogenic systems as well as the regulation of neurosteroidogenic activity in the adult rat hippocampus. Significant localization of cytochrome P450scc was observed in pyramidal neurons and granule neurons by means of immunohistochemical staining of slices. We also observed the colocalization, in hippocampal neurons, of P450scc with redox partners, hydroxysteroid sulfotransferase and steroidogenic acute regulatory protein. The distributions of astroglial cells and oligodendroglial cells showed very different patterns from that of the P450scc-containing cells. The expression of P450scc, redox partners, the sulfotransferase, and steroidogenic acute regulatory protein was also confirmed by Western blot analysis. The process of active neurosteroidogenesis was stimulated by exposing neurons to N-methyl-D-aspartate. Upon stimulation with N-methyl-D-aspartate, Ca(2+) influx through the N-methyl-D-aspartate subtype of glutamate receptors occurred, and significant net production of pregnenolone and pregnenolone sulfate was observed in the hippocampus. This neurosteroid production was considerably suppressed by the addition of antagonists of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors, by Ca(2+) depletion, or by the addition of an inhibitor of P450scc. Upon stimulation with N-methyl-D-aspartate, the processing of full-length steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (37-kDa) to the truncated 30-kDa steroidogenic acute regulatory protein was observed. Taken together, these observations imply that hippocampal neurons synthesize neurosteroids. This synthesis may be stimulated and regulated by glutamate-mediated synaptic communication.

Abstract
Autoimmune neutropenia (AIN) can occur during pregnancy. However, neonatal neutropenia occurring in an infant born to a mother with AIN has only rarely been documented. Recently, we have experienced two cases of AIN during pregnancy, both of which caused severe yet transient neonatal neutropenia (< 0.3 x 10(9)/l), probably as a result of transplacental maternal anti-neutrophil autoantibodies. The anti-neutrophil antibodies seemed to be against antigens other than NA1/NA2 because the autoantibodies did not bind to neutrophils of specific NA types selectively in the granulocyte indirect immunofluorescence test. Although AIN is a relatively uncommon disease, neonatal neutropenia caused by maternal AIN may not be quite as rare.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To clarify the virological state of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-1-infected patients, we compared the plasma HIV-1 RNA copy number (plasma viral load (VL)), viral DNA and mRNA burdens in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), and the other clinical predictors. METHODS One hundred and thirty-one samples of PBMCs and plasma from 26 patients infected with HIV-1 were obtained during 20 consecutive months for the measurement of VL, viral DNA and mRNA burdens, and CD4 positive (CD4+) cells count. The quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method with detection by solid phase DNA was utilized for the assay of VL, viral DNA and mRNA burdens. RESULTS Eighty-six VL, 101 viral mRNA and 129 viral DNA out of 131 samples were detected. There was a significant positive correlation between VL and the viral mRNA burden (r = 0.600, P < or = 0.001), and between VL and the viral DNA burden (r = 0.368, P < or = 0.001). Focused on individuals, the viral mRNA burdens varied in a manner relatively dependent on VL when both values were detectable. However, viral DNA burdens varied relatively independently of VL and the viral mRNA burdens. In six patients the viral mRNA burden was detectable and changed even if the VL was undetectable throughout the observation period. CONCLUSIONS Both viral DNA and viral mRNA burdens still showed detectable changes even when the VLs became undetectable in most patients. The measurement of viral mRNA or DNA burdens may be clinically available to identify viral replication when VL is undetectable.
