Antibiofilm Effect of Nitric Acid-Functionalized Carbon Nanotube-Based Surfaces against E. coli and S. aureus

Chemically modified carbon nanotubes are recognized as effective materials for tackling bacterial infections. In this study, pristine multi-walled carbon nanotubes (p-MWCNTs) were functionalized with nitric acid (f-MWCNTs), followed by thermal treatment at 600 °C, and incorporated into a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) matrix. The materials' textural properties were evaluated, and the roughness and morphology of MWCNT/PDMS composites were assessed using optical profilometry and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. The antibiofilm activity of MWCNT/PDMS surfaces was determined by quantifying culturable Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus after 24 h of biofilm formation. Additionally, the antibacterial mechanisms of MWCNT materials were identified by flow cytometry, and the cytotoxicity of MWCNT/PDMS composites was tested against human kidney (HK-2) cells. The results revealed that the antimicrobial activity of MWCNTs incorporated into a PDMS matrix can be efficiently tailored through nitric acid functionalization, and it can be increased by up to 49% in the absence of surface carboxylic groups in f-MWCNT samples heated at 600 °C and the presence of redox activity of carbonyl groups. MWCNT materials changed the membrane permeability of both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, while they only induced the production of ROS in Gram-positive bacteria. Furthermore, the synthesized composites did not impact HK-2 cell viability, confirming the biocompatibility of MWCNT composites.

Temperature and nitrogen-induced modification of activated carbons for efficient catalytic ozonation of salicylic acid as a model emerging pollutant

The occurrence of emerging pollutants on effluents of wastewater treatment plants makes unfeasible their reutilization and consequently to comply with the sixth goal of 2030 Agenda for sustainable development. Thus, it is extremely important to find ways to remove these pollutants without compromising the quality of reclaimed water. Ozonation has been successfully explored for this purpose, but it still presents limitations towards some oxidant-resistant pollutants. To surpass this, the conversion of ozone (O3) into more reactive species is required, which can be accomplished by using catalysts. Carbon catalysts, such as activated carbons (ACs), represent a more environmentally attractive option than traditional metal-based catalysts, with the advantage of being easily modified to tune their textural and surface properties to the reaction chemistry. In this study, two different sources of ACs were tested in the catalytic ozonation of a frequently detected emerging pollutant: salicylic acid (SalAc). These ACs were submitted to thermal treatment under H2 and functionalization with N precursors, such as melamine and poly(ethyleneimine), to induce changes in the surface properties, especially in the nitrogen content. Although no correlation was found between the N-content and catalytic activity, the thermal treatment under H2 increased the mesopores surface area (Smeso), which reflected in greater catalytic activity. As that, the best-performing AC was the one with the highest Smeso, which revealed also to be resistant to O3 and able to convert O3 into more reactive species, evidenced by the capacity of oxalic acid, a well-known ozone-resistant by-product. The same AC was then submitted to three consecutive reutilization cycles and a more significant activity loss was observed in terms of SalAc degradation rate (⁓ 40%) then total organic carbon removal (⁓ 25%), from the first to the third cycle. This decline in efficiency was ascribed to the presence of by-products adhered to the catalyst surface, which impede its ability to react effectively with O3.

Optimization of iron-ZIF-8 catalysts for degradation of tartrazine in water by Fenton-like reaction

Optimization of iron zeolitic imidazole framework-8 (FeZIF-8) nanoparticles, as heterogeneous catalysts, were synthesized and evaluated by the Fenton-like reaction for to degrade tartrazine (Tar) in aqueous environment. To achieve this, ZIF-8 nanoparticles were modified with different iron species (Fe2+ or Fe3O4), and subsequently assessed through the Fenton-like oxidation. The effect of different parameters such as the concentration of hydrogen peroxide, the mass of catalyst and the contact time of reaction on the degradation of Tar by Fenton-like oxidation was studied by using the Box-Behnken design (BBD). The BBD model indicated that the optimum catalytic conditions for Fenton-like reaction with an initial pollutant concentration of 30 ppm at pH 3.0 were T = 40 °C and 12 mM of H2O2, 2 g/L of catalyst and 4 h of reaction. The maximum Tar conversion value achieved with the best catalyst, Fe1ZIF-8, was 66.5% with high mineralization (in terms of decrease of total organic carbon - TOC), 44.2%. To assess phytotoxicity, the germination success of corn kernels was used as an indicator in the laboratory. The results show that the catalytic oxidation by Fenton-like reaction using heterogeneous iron ZIF-8 catalysts is a viable alternative for treating contaminated effluents with organic pollutants and highlighted the importance of the validation of the optimized experimental conditions by mathematical models.

Exploring Nitrogen-Functionalized Graphene Composites for Urinary Catheter Applications

Graphene has been broadly studied, particularly for the fabrication of biomedical devices, owing to its physicochemical and antimicrobial properties. In this study, the antibiofilm efficacy of graphene nanoplatelet (GNP)-based composites as coatings for urinary catheters (UCs) was investigated. GNPs were functionalized with nitrogen (N-GNP) and incorporated into a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix. The resulting materials were characterized, and the N-GNP/PDMS composite was evaluated against single- and multi-species biofilms of Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Both biofilm cell composition and structure were analyzed. Furthermore, the antibacterial mechanisms of action of N-GNP were explored. The N-GNP/PDMS composite showed increased hydrophobicity and roughness compared to PDMS. In single-species biofilms, this composite significantly reduced the number of S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, and K. pneumoniae cells (by 64, 41, and 29%, respectively), and decreased S. aureus biofilm culturability (by 50%). In tri-species biofilms, a 41% reduction in total cells was observed. These results are aligned with the outcomes of the biofilm structure analysis. Moreover, N-GNP caused changes in membrane permeability and triggered reactive oxygen species (ROS) synthesis in S. aureus, whereas in Gram-negative bacteria, it only induced changes in cell metabolism. Overall, the N-GNP/PDMS composite inhibited biofilm development, showing the potential of these carbon materials as coatings for UCs.

Degradation of p-Nitrophenol by activated persulfate with carbon-based materials

The removal of p-nitrophenol (PNP) from wastewater was evaluated by the activated persulfate process using different materials - carbon xerogels (XG), carbon nanotubes (CNT), and activated carbon (AC) -, and also using such materials doped with nitrogen (XGM, CNTM and ACM). These carbon materials were impregnated with 2 wt.% of iron and tested in the oxidative process to assess the influence of their textural and surface chemical properties. The carbon-based materials' properties influence the efficiencies of the adsorption and oxidative processes; in adsorption, the materials with higher specific surface areas (S_BET), i.e. AC (824 m²/g) and Fe/AC (807 m²/g), have shown to be the most promising (having achieved a PNP removal of about 20%); on the other hand, in the activated persulfate process the carbon or iron-containing carbon materials with the highest mesoporous areas (S_meso) were the preferential ones - XG and Fe/XG, respectively - reaching removals of 47.3% and 75.7% for PNP and 44.9 and 63.3% for TOC, respectively. Moreover, the presence of nitrogen groups on the samples' surface benefits both processes, being found that PNP degradation and mineralization increase with the nitrogen content. The stability of the best materials (XGM and Fe/XGM) was evaluated during four cycles, being noticed that while XGM lost catalytic activity, the Fe/XGM sample remained stable without leaching of iron. The quantification of intermediate compounds formed during persulfate oxidation was performed, and only oxalic acid was detected, in addition to PNP, being that their contribution to the TOC measured was higher than 99%. Experiments carried out in the presence of radical scavengers proved that only the sulfate radical is present under the acidic conditions used. Complete PNP oxidation and TOC removal of ∼96% were reached for the activated persulfate process, proving to be more attractive than the Fenton one.

Graphene-Based Coating to Mitigate Biofilm Development in Marine Environments

Due to its several economic and ecological consequences, biofouling is a widely recognized concern in the marine sector. The search for non-biocide-release antifouling coatings has been on the rise, with carbon-nanocoated surfaces showing promising activity. This work aimed to study the impact of pristine graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) on biofilm development through the representative marine bacteria Cobetia marina and to investigate the antibacterial mechanisms of action of this material. For this purpose, a flow cytometric analysis was performed and a GNP/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surface containing 5 wt% GNP (G5/PDMS) was produced, characterized, and assessed regarding its biofilm mitigation potential over 42 days in controlled hydrodynamic conditions that mimic marine environments. Flow cytometry revealed membrane damage, greater metabolic activity, and endogenous reactive oxygen species (ROS) production by C. marina when exposed to GNP 5% (w/v) for 24 h. In addition, C. marina biofilms formed on G5/PDMS showed consistently lower cell count and thickness (up to 43% reductions) than PDMS. Biofilm architecture analysis indicated that mature biofilms developed on the graphene-based surface had fewer empty spaces (34% reduction) and reduced biovolume (25% reduction) compared to PDMS. Overall, the GNP-based surface inhibited C. marina biofilm development, showing promising potential as a marine antifouling coating.

Gaseous toluene abatement by the heterogeneous Fenton-like process using iron/carbon-coated monolith as catalyst: Proof of concept

The degradation of toluene from a gas stream by the heterogeneous Fenton process was evaluated over a carbon-coated monolith impregnated or not with iron as catalyst in a bubble column reactor (BCR). The carbon-coated monolith support (CM) was prepared by chemical vapor deposition and the catalyst (CM impregnated with iron - herein called CM-Fe) by adsorption. In the screening of processes (absorption, adsorption and reaction), it was shown that the heterogeneous Fenton process catalyzed by CM-Fe presents the best efficiency (toluene transfer (η) = 10 × 10^-3 mol, for 300 mL of liquid solution and 0.69 g of catalyst). Finally, the stability of CM and CM-Fe was evaluated, wherein ten consecutive runs were carried out, the results showing a considerable deactivation of CM during the first five cycles. In contrast, the CM-Fe sample only slightly decreases its activity from the 1st to 2nd cycle (due to a small amount of iron leached from the monolith, 0.7%), remaining stable after that, which is important for applying this technology at the industrial level. This work showed for the first time that the treatment of gaseous effluents containing organic compounds by the Fenton process (which takes place in the liquid phase) using a carbon-coated monolith impregnated with iron is plausible, so the proof of concept was successfully accomplished.

The Use of 3D Optical Coherence Tomography to Analyze the Architecture of Cyanobacterial Biofilms Formed on a Carbon Nanotube Composite

The development of environmentally friendly antifouling strategies for marine applications is of paramount importance, and the fabrication of innovative nanocomposite coatings is a promising approach. Moreover, since Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a powerful imaging technique in biofilm science, the improvement of its analytical power is required to better evaluate the biofilm structure under different scenarios. In this study, the effect of carbon nanotube (CNT)-modified surfaces in cyanobacterial biofilm development was assessed over a long-term assay under controlled hydrodynamic conditions. Their impact on the cyanobacterial biofilm architecture was evaluated by novel parameters obtained from three-dimensional (3D) OCT analysis, such as the contour coefficient, total biofilm volume, biovolume, volume of non-connected pores, and the average size of non-connected pores. The results showed that CNTs incorporated into a commercially used epoxy resin (CNT composite) had a higher antifouling effect at the biofilm maturation stage compared to pristine epoxy resin. Along with a delay in biofilm development, a decrease in biofilm wet weight, thickness, and biovolume was also achieved with the CNT composite compared to epoxy resin and glass (control surfaces). Additionally, biofilms developed on the CNT composite were smoother and presented a lower porosity and a strictly packed structure when compared with those formed on the control surfaces. The novel biofilm parameters obtained from 3D OCT imaging are extremely important when evaluating the biofilm architecture and behavior under different scenarios beyond marine applications.

Optimization of the preparation conditions of cordierite honeycomb monoliths washcoated with cryptomelane-type manganese oxide for VOC oxidation

Ceramic honeycomb monoliths were washcoated with cryptomelane-type manganese oxides and their catalytic performance was evaluated in the oxidation of ethyl acetate. The effect of a mixture of ethyl acetate with toluene and of the presence of water vapour was also assessed.Different coating parameters, namely size of catalyst particles, number of immersions in the washcoating solution, presence of an initial coating with alumina, calcination temperature of this coating, as well as the amount of binding agent and ethanol in the washcoating solution were studied and optimized based on the catalytic activity of the structured catalyst. Small particles are required for a correct impregnation; however, since the smallest particles are less active, an intermediate size achieved the best catalytic results. Increasing the number of immersions over 3 did not significantly increase the catalytic activity of the structured catalyst. The presence of an initial coating with alumina and a binding agent (colloidal alumina) in the washcoating solution was found essential to increase the activity, whereas increasing the calcination temperature after the initial alumina coating above 500°C decreased the activity of the catalyst. The presence of ethanol in the washcoating solution did not significantly improve the activity of the structured catalyst.The optimized structured catalyst presented high catalytic activity in the removal of ethyl acetate (90% conversion into CO₂ at 256°C) and high stability during 100 h of reaction. The addition of toluene or water vapour in the feed gas did not significantly affect the activity of the coated monolith.

Effect of ball milling on the catalytic activity of cryptomelane for VOC oxidation

Cryptomelane-type manganese oxides prepared by a solvent-free method were evaluated as catalysts for the oxidation of ethyl acetate, ethanol and toluene. The original catalyst (K-OMS-2) presented high catalytic activity for ethyl acetate and ethanol oxidation, achieving 90% conversion into CO₂ around 200°C for both pollutants. Toluene was much harder to oxidize, requiring a temperature near 270°C for the same conversion. The original catalyst was mechanically treated in a ball mill at different intensities, in order to decrease the particle size for subsequent impregnation onto structured supports, as small particle sizes are usually recommended. The catalytic activity of the materials decreases with the increase in the severity of this treatment, which is related to the decrease of the surface area of the catalysts, since the other properties (phase purity, thermal stability, surface oxygen, average oxidation state and reactivity of the oxygen species) are similar among the catalysts with different ball milling treatments. For comparison, a platinum-based catalyst (1%-Pt/Al₂O₃) was also tested, which exhibited a high activity for toluene, but much lower activities for the two other volatile organic compounds tested. A long-term experiment, using ethanol as model pollutant, showed that the cryptomelane catalyst was stable for more than 100 h.

Encapsulation and characterisation of cationic benzo[a]phenoxazines in zeolite HY

Encapsulated benzo[a]phenoxazinium derivatives were synthesized inside of zeolite HY and exhibit excellent fluorescence emission behavior.

Catalytic and Photocatalytic Nitrate Reduction Over Pd-Cu Loaded Over Hybrid Materials of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes and TiO2

TiO2 and carbon nanotube-TiO2 hybrid materials synthesized by sol-gel and loaded with 1%Pd-1%Cu (%wt.) were tested in the catalytic and photocatalytic reduction of nitrate in water in the presence of CO2 (buffer) and H2 (reducing agent). Characterization of the catalysts was performed by UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, temperature programed reduction, N2 adsorption, and electron microscopy. The presence of light produced a positive effect in the kinetics of nitrate removal. Higher selectivity toward nitrogen formation was observed under dark condition, while the photo-activated reactions showed higher selectivity for the production of ammonium. The hybrid catalyst containing 20 %wt. of carbon nanotubes shows the best compromise between activity and selectivity. A mechanism for the photocatalytic abatement of nitrate in water in the presence of the hybrid materials was proposed, based in the action of carbon nanotubes as light harvesters, dispersing media for TiO2 particles and as charge carrier facilitators.

Zero-valent iron supported on nitrogen-doped carbon xerogel as catalysts for the oxidation of phenol by fenton-like system

Nitrogen-free and nitrogen-doped carbon xerogel materials, from urea and melamine precursors, were prepared at different pH and evaluated as adsorbents/catalysts in the removal of phenol. Then, zero-valent iron (ZVI) was supported on these carbon xerogel materials and its activity was again evaluated for phenol removal by adsorption and catalytic wet peroxide oxidation (CWPO). The prepared samples were characterized by N₂ adsorption at -196°C, pH at the point of zero charge (pH_PZC) and elemental analysis. The textural properties of the N-free and N-doped carbon xerogels are strongly influenced by pH of the preparation solution and precursor used. The presence of ZVI on all carbon xerogel supports improved the phenol removal efficiency. ZVI supported on urea- and melamine-doped carbon xerogels show a good performance, reaching above 87% phenol conversion after 60 min of CWPO. On the contrary, pure adsorption and CWPO using the same materials without the presence of ZVI gives low phenol removal efficiency. A correlation was found between the activity of ZVI catalysts in CWPO and the N-content of the supports.

Effect of cobalt loading on the solid state properties and ethyl acetate oxidation performance of cobalt-cerium mixed oxides

Cobalt-cerium mixed oxides were prepared by the wet impregnation method and evaluated for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) abatement, using ethyl acetate (EtAc) as model molecule. The impact of Co content on the physicochemical characteristics of catalysts and EtAc conversion was investigated. The materials were characterized by various techniques, including N₂ adsorption at -196°C, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), H₂-temperature programmed reduction (H₂-TPR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to reveal the structure-activity relationship. The obtained results showed the superiority of mixed oxides compared to bare CeO₂ and Co₃O₄, demonstrating a synergistic effect. The optimum oxidation performance was achieved with the sample containing 20wt.% Co (Co/Ce atomic ratio of ca. 0.75), in which complete conversion of EtAc was attained at 260°C. In contrast, temperatures above 300°C were required to achieve 100% conversion over the single oxides. Notably, a strong relationship between both the: (i) relative population, and (ii) facile reduction of lattice oxygen with the ethyl acetate oxidation activity was found, highlighting the key role of loosely bound oxygen species on VOCs oxidation. A synergistic Co-Ce interaction can be accounted for the enhanced reducibility of mixed oxides, linked with the increased mobility of lattice oxygen.
