Abstract
Objectives Effective reduction of cervical cancer incidence and mortality requires strategic measures encompassing the implementation of a cost-effective screening technology. Serbia has made significant strides, introducing organized cervical cancer screening in 2012. However, various impediments to screening implementation persist. The aim of the study was to estimate the socioeconomic factors associated with cervical cancer screening among women in Serbia. Methods Data from 2019 National Health Survey of the population of Serbia were used in this study. The study is cross sectional survey on a representative sample of the population of Serbia. Present total number of participants analyzed in survey 6,747. Results In Serbia, 67.2% of women have done a Pap test at any time during their lives, of which 46.1% of women have undergone cervical cancer screening in the past 3 years. About a quarter of women have never undergone a Pap test in their life (24.3%). The probability of never having a Pap test have: the youngest age group (15-24 years) is 1.3 times more likely than the oldest age group (OR = 1.31), unmarried women 0.3 times more often than married women (OR = 0.37), respondents with basic education 0.9 times more often than married women (OR = 0.98), the women of lower socioeconomic status 0.5 times more often than respondents of high socioeconomic status (OR = 0.56). Conclusion Enhancement of the existing CCS would be the appropriate public health approach to decrease the incidence and mortality of cervical cancer in the Republic of Serbia.

Abstract
Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) is a ubiquitously distributed cytokine known to contribute to the pathogenesis of numerous pathological processes. The aim of this study was to measure serum concentrations of TGF-β1 in severely ill COVID-19 patients and to analyze its relationship with selected hematological and biochemical parameters and with the disease outcome. The study population included 53 COVID-19 patients with severe clinical expression of the disease and 15 control subjects. TGF-β1 was determined in serum samples and supernatants from PHA-stimulated whole blood cultures using ELISA assay. Biochemical and hematological parameters were analyzed using standard accepted methods. Our results showed that serum levels of TGF-β1 in COVID-19 patients and controls correlate with the platelet counts. Also, positive correlations of TGF-β1 with white blood cell and lymphocyte counts, platelet-to-lymphocyte (PLR) ratio, and fibrinogen level were shown, while negative correlations of this cytokine with platelet distribution width (PDW), D-dimer and activated partial thromboplastin time (a-PTT) values in COVID-19 patients were observed. The lower serum values of TGF-β1 were associated with the unfavorable outcome of COVID-19. In conclusion, TGF-β1 levels were strongly associated with platelet counts and unfavorable disease outcome of severely ill COVID-19 patients.

Abstract
Background The objective of this research was to evaluate the occurrence of depression, anxiety, and stress, as well as the level of life contentment and coping mechanisms employed by college students amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods A total of 588 students of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and the Higher School of Medicine, Kraljevo, University of Kragujevac, Central Serbia, participated in an online cross-sectional survey in the period September-October 2022. Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21) was used to measure the levels of depression, anxiety, and stress. The Coping Questionnaire-a shorter version (Brief Cope Inventories) assesses the coping strategies a person uses in stressful situations, and the 5-item Life Satisfaction Scale is used to examine the level of life satisfaction. Results The symptoms of depression were reported by 34.9%, of anxiety by 47.1% and of stress by 44.2%. The type of faculty (p = 0.001), and place of residence (p = 0.036) correlated with depression, gender with anxiety (p = 0.001) and stress (p = 0.015). In terms of coping mechanisms, the most frequently mentioned strategies, based on average scores, were acceptance (5.76), positive interpretation (5.55), humor (5.46). Conclusion The adverse impact of COVID-19 was a risk factor for depression, anxiety and stress symptoms. A negative correlation exists between the levels of depression, anxiety, and stress, and the overall life satisfaction of university students. Offering the necessary assistance through psychological interventions and effective coping techniques is crucial in ensuring the optimal mental health of university students.

Abstract
Objectives The aim of this paper is to assess the association of demografic and socioeconomic determinants with utilization of dental services among Serbian adults. Materials and methods The study is a part of the population health research of Serbia, conducted in the period from October to December 2019 by the Institute of Statistics of the Republic of Serbia in cooperation with the Institute of Public Health of Serbia "Dr. Milan JovanovićBatut" and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Serbia. The research was conducted as a descriptive, cross-sectional analytical study on a representative sample of the population of Serbia. For the purposes of this study, data on the adult population aged 20 years and older were used. Results Men were approximately 1.8 times more likely than women to not utilize dental healthcare services (OR = 1.81). The likelihood of not utilizing dental healthcare protection rises with increasing age, reaching its peak within the 65-74 age range (OR = 0.441), after which it declines. Individuals who have experienced marital dissolution due to divorce or the death of a spouse exhibit a higher probability of not utilizing health protection (OR = 1.868). As the level of education and wealth diminishes, the probability of abstaining from health protection increases by 5.8 times among respondents with an elementary school education (OR = 5.852) and 1.7 times among the most economically disadvantaged respondents (OR = 1.745). Regarding inactivity, respondents who are not employed have a 2.6-fold higher likelihood of not utilizing oral health care compared to employed respondents (OR = 2.610). Conclusion The results suggest that individual sociodemographic factors influence utilization of dental services by Serbian adults and confirmed the existence of socioeconomic disparities.

Abstract
The aim of our study was to assess the oxidative stress and inflammatory status in critically ill patients with sepsis as well as their relationship with the level of DNA damage. The study also evaluated the influence of all analyzed parameters on the outcome of the patients. The study included 27 critically ill patients with sepsis and 20 healthy subjects. Comet Assay was used for the measurement of the level of DNA damage, expressed as genetic damage index (GDI). Both oxidative stress parameters and the antioxidant parameters were obtained spectrophotometrically. The standard laboratory methods and the appropriate autoanalyzers were performed for determination the parameters of inflammation. A higher level of oxidative stress and more pronounced inflammation were found in the patients with sepsis compared to healthy subjects. The activity of the antioxidant enzymes was statistically declined in patients with sepsis, so that the most notable differences between two groups of participants were found for the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) (p = 0.004). Comet assay indicated that patients with sepsis had significantly higher GDI compared to healthy subjects (p < 0.001), which positively correlated with the concentration of superoxide anion radical (О2-) (r = 0.497, p = 0.010), and nitrites (NО2-) (r = 0.473, p = 0.015), as well with the concentration of C reactive protein (CRP) (r = 0.460, p = 0.041). Regression analysis confirmed that patients' age (p = 0.033), the level of О2- (p = 0.007), CRP concentration (p = 0.029) and GDI (p = 0.001) increased the risk of lethal outcome in critically ill patients with sepsis. In conclusion, critically ill patients with sepsis have a higher degree of oxidative stress and inflammation which contribute to a higher level of DNA damage. Consequently, above mentioned parameters, including patients' age, adversely affect the outcome of critically ill patients with sepsis.

Abstract
Introduction Social support as a complex construct has a positive influence not only on a patient's condition but also on the process of the patient's emotional adjustment to cancer. The goal of this study is to investigate aspects of the level of social support in oncology patients and its interconnection with sociodemographic and medical variables. Method The study was conducted as a prospective observational study in 2020, including 250 patients aged 19 and over, both sexes, with a diagnosis of oncological disease. The research was conducted in the Department of General Medicine of the Health Center Trstenik, Central Serbia, after approval by the Ethics Committee of the Health Center Trstenik, Central Serbia. A social support assessment questionnaire (Oslo-3 Social Support Scale) was used as a research instrument. Results Data collected from the entire study population showed that bad social support was present in almost 90% of cases. Univariate and multivariate regression analysis showed a statistically significant influence of the following variables on the bad social support: education level, activity limitation, difficulties in performing daily activities, the impact of pain on the performance of activities, the need for additional help with activity, the need for help at home, unfulfilled needs for health care, means of information, anxiety score and depression score. Conclusion Interventions to increase social support may be important for enhancing mental health and quality of life in cancer patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Since its outbreak in early 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic has diverted resources from non-urgent and elective procedures, leading to diagnosis and treatment delays, with an increased number of neoplasms at advanced stages worldwide. The aims of this study were to quantify the reduction in surgical activity for indeterminate thyroid nodules during the COVID-19 pandemic; and to evaluate whether delays in surgery led to an increased occurrence of aggressive tumours. METHODS In this retrospective, international, cross-sectional study, centres were invited to participate in June 22, 2022; each centre joining the study was asked to provide data from medical records on all surgical thyroidectomies consecutively performed from Jan 1, 2019, to Dec 31, 2021. Patients with indeterminate thyroid nodules were divided into three groups according to when they underwent surgery: from Jan 1, 2019, to Feb 29, 2020 (global prepandemic phase), from March 1, 2020, to May 31, 2021 (pandemic escalation phase), and from June 1 to Dec 31, 2021 (pandemic decrease phase). The main outcomes were, for each phase, the number of surgeries for indeterminate thyroid nodules, and in patients with a postoperative diagnosis of thyroid cancers, the occurrence of tumours larger than 10 mm, extrathyroidal extension, lymph node metastases, vascular invasion, distant metastases, and tumours at high risk of structural disease recurrence. Univariate analysis was used to compare the probability of aggressive thyroid features between the first and third study phases. The study was registered on ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT05178186. FINDINGS Data from 157 centres (n=49 countries) on 87 467 patients who underwent surgery for benign and malignant thyroid disease were collected, of whom 22 974 patients (18 052 [78·6%] female patients and 4922 [21·4%] male patients) received surgery for indeterminate thyroid nodules. We observed a significant reduction in surgery for indeterminate thyroid nodules during the pandemic escalation phase (median monthly surgeries per centre, 1·4 [IQR 0·6-3·4]) compared with the prepandemic phase (2·0 [0·9-3·7]; p<0·0001) and pandemic decrease phase (2·3 [1·0-5·0]; p<0·0001). Compared with the prepandemic phase, in the pandemic decrease phase we observed an increased occurrence of thyroid tumours larger than 10 mm (2554 [69·0%] of 3704 vs 1515 [71·5%] of 2119; OR 1·1 [95% CI 1·0-1·3]; p=0·042), lymph node metastases (343 [9·3%] vs 264 [12·5%]; OR 1·4 [1·2-1·7]; p=0·0001), and tumours at high risk of structural disease recurrence (203 [5·7%] of 3584 vs 155 [7·7%] of 2006; OR 1·4 [1·1-1·7]; p=0·0039). INTERPRETATION Our study suggests that the reduction in surgical activity for indeterminate thyroid nodules during the COVID-19 pandemic period could have led to an increased occurrence of aggressive thyroid tumours. However, other compelling hypotheses, including increased selection of patients with aggressive malignancies during this period, should be considered. We suggest that surgery for indeterminate thyroid nodules should no longer be postponed even in future instances of pandemic escalation. FUNDING None.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has been linked with an increased risk of cardiovascular events, especially in dialysis population. According to literature data, in the patients with CKD heart function disturbances are twice as common as in the general population [1]. Bearing in the mind that left ventricular hypertrophy (and abnormal left ventricular relaxation) is considered to be one of the most important parameters for the occurrence of cardiovascular disease in CKD [2], the aim of our study was to evaluate the association of left ventricular diastolic dysfunction with heart failure in CKD patients.
METHOD
The research was conducted as a prospective observational study which included 30 patients with CKD, stage III and IV according KDIGO [3], and left ventricular diastolic dysfunction, and 30 control subjects who also had left ventricular diastolic dysfunction but without CKD. Pulse-wave (PW) Doppler echocardiography in the apical four-chamber view and tissue Doppler imaging were performed to assess left ventricular function [4]. The measurements of mitral inflow by PW Doppler covered early (E-wave) and late (A-wave) diastolic feeling velocities, peak early diastolic velocity at the septal (e′septal) and lateral (e′lateral) mitral annular sites, and E/A ratio.
RESULTS
A comparison of left ventricular function parameters between two groups of study participants indicated that left ventricular ejection fraction (0.57 ± 0.05% versus 0.61 ± 0.03%) was statistically reduced in CKD patients compared to control subjects (P < .001). Contrary, left ventricular mass index (119.8 ± 27.0 g/m2 versus 100.8 ± 20.4 g/m2P = .003) and interventricular septum thickness (11.8 ± 1.4 mm versus 10.8 ± 1.5 mm, P = .012) were significantly higher in the patients with CKD. There were no significant differences in values of left ventricular end-diastolic (53.7 ± 4.6 mm versus 54.2 ± 3.5 mm, P = .636) and left ventricular end-systolic (34.7 ± 4.5 mm versus 35.7 ± 2.3 mm, P = .265) dimension between CKD patients and controls. The mitral inflow imaging pointed to more pronounced left ventricular diastolic dysfunction in CKD patients than in the subjects without CKD: e′septal (P = .009) and e′lateral (P < .001) velocity. E/A ratio showed no markedly deviation between two study groups (P = .787). On the other hand, when we analysed the frequency of heart failure, it was noted that newly developed episodes of cardiac decompensation were more frequent in patients with CKD than in the control group (Chi square = 6.667, P = .010). Regression analysis confirmed the predictive significance of left ventricular echosonographic characteristics on the occurrence of heart failure in patients with CKD (OR 1.56, 95% CI 1.11‒2.18, P = .011 for left ventricular mass index; OR 1.68, 95% CI 1.01‒2.80, P = .048 for e′).
CONCLUSION
Heart failure is more common in patients with CKD than in patients with normal kidney function. There is a positive relationship between the presence of left ventricular diastolic dysfunction and the occurrence of heart failure in patients with CKD.

Abstract
PURPOSE The main purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics of dyspepsia and contributing factors in Montenegrin maintenance hemodialysis patients. METHODS The study included 43 patients undergoing hemodialysis with symptoms of dyspepsia and 40 control dyspeptic subjects with preserved kidney function. All subjects underwent an interview about dyspeptic symptoms, physical and biochemical examination, and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy with pathohistological analysis of biopsy specimens. RESULTS Early satiety, bloating and heartburn were the most common symptoms in hemodialysis patients but without significant difference in frequency in relation to controls. Chronic kidney disease patients had statistically lower concentration of total proteins and albumin (p < 0.001), as well lower BMI values (p = 0.002). Despite this, no significant correlation of laboratory parameters with dyspeptic symptoms was found. Pathohistological examination indicated that the most common finding in hemodialysis patients was chronic active gastritis (58%), while chronic atrophic gastritis was significantly more common in dialytic patients (p = 0.032). Patients on hemodialysis had more frequently atrophy of corpus mucosa, which was positively related to dialysis duration (p = 0.001) and negatively related to pH values (p = 0.004) and bicarbonate concentration (p = 0.049). Helicobacter pylori was considerably more common in patients who underwent shorter time on hemodialysis (p < 0.001) and had higher values of bicarbonate (p = 0.037). CONCLUSION Maintenance hemodialysis patients are at risk for chronic gastric diseases that correlated with both dialysis vintage and duration.

Abstract
Background: The aim of this study was to identify the risk factors associated with falling in post stroke patients. Methods: This retrospective case-control study included 561 neurology patients hospitalized for a stroke and divided into two groups: falling patients and non-falling patients. They referred to the Special Hospital for Cerebrovascular Diseases “Sveti Sava” in Belgrade, Serbia, from 2018–2019. Logistic regression analysis was applied to examine socio-economic factors associated with predictors of unmet healthcare needs. Results: A significant difference was seen in the length of hospitalization of falling patients compared to the non-falling (P<0.001). We established statistically significant differences in mental status (P<0.001), sensibility (P=0.016), depressed mood (P<0.001), early (P=0.001) and medium insomnia (P=0.042), psychomotor slowness (P=0.030), somatic anxiety (P=0.044) and memory (P<0.001). Conclusion: Cerebrovascular disease distribution and the degree of neurological deficit primarily altered mental status, which could be recognized as one of the more important predictors for falling after stroke. The identification of risk factors may be a first step toward the design of intervention programs for preventing a future fall among hospitalized stroke patients.

Abstract
Background: Patients with oncological diseases often have mental disorders in the form of comorbidity. The aim of this study was to research the association of cancer with the presence of symptoms of depression and anxiety in primary health care patients. Methods: This prospective observational study done in 2020 included adult users of health care at the Health Center Trstenik, Central Serbia, aged 19 and over, both sexes, with a diagnosis of oncological disease. A research instrument to assess depressive symptoms is used PHQ-9 (The Patient Health Questionnaire) questionnaire, derived from PRIME MD- and (The Primary Care Evaluation of Mental Disorders), and the Beck Anxiety Scale (BAI) to register the presence of certain anxiety symptoms. Results: The largest percentage of patients had symptoms of mild (27.2%) or moderate depression (22%), while 18% reported symptoms of major depression. The level of depression was higher in older subjects, in the presence of chronic diseases with greater limitations of activity and the presence of difficulties in performing daily activities, with a more pronounced effect of pain on activity, the presence of stress. All subjects were characterized as persons with severe anxiety (score 26–63). The level of anxiety was higher in older respondents, in the presence of long-term illness, with greater limitations of activities and difficulties in performing daily activities, with a more pronounced influence of pain on performing activities and the influence of the media. Conclusion: Caring for the mental health of cancer patients must occupy a significant part of each country’s national health policy.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Adrenal incidentalomas (AI), defined as masses detected during imaging procedures of non-adrenal disorders, have become a common clinical problem that appear to have impairment of glucose and lipid metabolism. PATIENTS AND METHODS One hundred and ten patients (mean 53.5 age; 24-72), who were diagnosed with functioning and non-functioning AI, were assessed. Patients with hormone-secreting AI underwent biochemical evaluation regarding metabolic disorders. Data about hormone status (cortisol profile and DEX screening test), lipid profile, glycemia, insulinemia were evaluated. RESULTS This prospective study included 41 (37.28%) patients with non-functional and 69 (62.72%) with functional AI. Tumors associated with (sub)clinical Cushing's syndrome (functional AI) are considered to have higher cortisol concentration at 8h (p=0.027), 16h (p=0.025) and after DEX screening (p<0.010), compared to the controls. Patients with cortisol-secreting AI have significantly higher concentrations of cholesterol (p=0.040), triglycerides (p=0.027) and insulin (p<0.01) than controls. The patients with metabolic disorders have a significantly higher total cholesterol, triglyceride and insulin concentration (p<0.001) compared to controls. There was significant positive correlation between cortisol concentration after DEX screening and total cholesterol (r=0.727, p=0.007), triglycerides (r=0.564, p=0.041) and insulin (r=0.957, p=0.043) in the group with metabolic disorders. CONCLUSION The present study demonstrates the patients with functional AI have significantly higher lipid, glucose and insulin concentration than controls. There was a significant positive correlation between metabolic parameters and cortisol concentration.

Abstract
Published data indicate the involvement of eosinophil granulocytes and eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) in tumor defense. The aim of this study was to analyze serum ECP concentrations in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) before, 3 days and 7 days after radioactive iodine (131-I) therapy. Association of ECP concentrations with histological type of tumor, stage of disease and/or levels of selected T-helper 2 (Th2) cytokines was examined. The study population included 17 DTC patients and 10 control subjects. ECP was measured by fluoroimmunoassay (FIA). Th2 (cytokines interleukin 4 (IL-4), interleukin 5 (IL-5), and interleukin 13 (IL-13)) were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). We found that ECP values in DTC patients before radioactive iodine therapy were approximately two-fold higher than in the controls, but the difference was statistically significant only if the patients with DTC and associated Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) were included. There was no correlation between the serum concentrations of IL-5 and ECP. Radioactive iodine therapy led to a decrease in serum ECP level which did not follow the decline in serum protein levels. Additional studies are needed to determine the significance of these findings.

Abstract
Fatigue is a common feature in a wide variety of chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, but fatigue in autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) has not been investigated so far. The aim of this study was to examine fatigue in patients with AITD and to analyse the correlation between fatigue and the serum concentrations of thyroid antibodies, thyroid function and depression. This cross-sectional clinical study included 62 patients with increased concentrations of thyroperoxidase antibodies (TPOAbs) as confirmation of AITD and 52 healthy individuals who were negative for thyroid antibodies; all controls were euthyroid. Thyroid antibodies, free thyroxine and thyroid-stimulating hormone were measured in the sera of all subjects. The Fatigue Severity Scale was used to measure the severity of fatigue; the level of depression was measured by the Beck Depression Inventory. Eight (12.9%) patients had evident fatigue, 7 (11.3%) patients had fatigue limit values, and 47 (75.8%) patients had no fatigue. The frequency of fatigue was highly significant and almost three times higher in the AITD patients compared to the control group, in which only 2 (3.8%) patients had evident fatigue. The majority of patients with fatigue had normal thyroid function, and only one (1.6%) patient had overt hypothyroidism. Seven (11.3%) patients had both fatigue and depression, whereas one (1.6%) patient had fatigue without depression. We did not find significant correlations between fatigue and the concentrations of thyroid antibodies, but we found statistically significant correlations between fatigue and depression in AITD patients.

Abstract
AbstractThe present study examines the effects of divalent metals, cadmium (Cd2+) and manganese (Mn2+), on the outward potassium currents of Retzius cells in the hirudinid leeches Haemopis sanguisuga using conventional two-microelectrode voltageclamp techniques. The outward potassium current is activated by depolarization and plays an important role in determining both the neuronal excitability and action potential duration. A strong inhibition of the fast current and a clear reduction in the late currents of the outward current with 1 mM Cd2+were obtained, which indicated that both components are sensitive to this metal. Complete blockage of the fast and partial reduction of the slow outward currents was observed after adding 1 mM Mn2+to the extracellular fluid. These data show that the outward K+current in leech Retzius nerve cells comprises at least two components: a voltage-dependent K+current and a Ca2+- activated K+current. These observations also indicate that Cd2+is more eff ective than Mn2+in blocking ion fl ow through these channels and that suppressing Ca2+-activated K+outward currents can prolong the action potential in nerve cells.

Abstract
Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) plays an important role in many pathophysiological conditions, including cancer. The level of TGF-β in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) has not been examined so far. The aim of this study was to measure TGF-β concentration in serum samples and in PHA-stimulated whole blood culture in vitro and to analyze possible associations of TGF-β1 levels with leukocyte, lymphocyte and platelets counts, the histological type of thyroid cancer, and stage of disease. TGF-β1 was measured in 22 DTC patients and 20 healthy controls using the duoSet ELISA Development kit for human TGF-β1. The concentration of TGF-β1 in serum samples from both groups correlated positively with the platelet counts. There was no statistically significant difference in the serum concentrations of TGF-β1 between DTC patients and control subjects, but PHA stimulated whole blood cultures of DTC patients produced less TGF-β1 than those from controls. Additional studies are needed to determine the significance of these in vitro findings.

Abstract
Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) is the most frequent thyroid autoimmune disease, while papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is one of the most common endocrine malignancies. A few patients with HT also develop PTC. The aim of this study was to analyze cytokine profiles in patients with PTC accompanied with autoimmune HT in comparison with those in patients with PTC alone or HT alone and healthy subjects. Cytokine levels were determined in supernatants obtained from phytohemagglutinin (PHA)-stimulated whole blood cultures in vitro. The concentrations of selected cytokines: Th1-interferon gamma (IFN-γ); Th2-interleukin 4 (IL-4), interleukin 5 (IL-5), interleukin 6 (IL-6), interleukin 10 (IL-10) and interleukin 13 (IL-13); Th9-interleukin 9 (IL-9); and Th17-interleukin 17 (IL-17A) were measured using multiplex cytokine detection systems for human Th1/Th2/Th9/Th17/Th22. We found that PTC patients with HT produced significantly higher concentrations of IL-4, IL-6, IL-9, IL-13 and IFN-γ than PTC patients without HT. In conclusion, autoimmune HT affects the cytokine profile of patients with PTC by stimulating secretion of Th1/Th2/Th9 types of cytokines. Th1/Th2 cytokine ratios in PTC patients with associated autoimmune HT indicate a marked shift toward Th2 immunity.

The aim of this study was to evaluate cytokine profiles in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) before and 7 days after radioactive iodine (131-I) therapy. Cytokine levels were determined in supernatants obtained from phytohemagglutinin-stimulated whole blood cultures of 13 patients with DTC and 13 control subjects. The concentrations of selected cytokines: Th1-interferon gamma (IFN-γ), interleukin 2 (IL-2) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α); Th2-interleukin 4 (IL-4), interleukin 5 (IL-5), interleukin 13 (IL-13) and interleukin 10 (IL-10); Th9-interleukin-9 (IL-9); and Th17-interleukin 17 (IL-17A) were measured using multiplex cytokine detection systems for Human Th1/Th2/Th9/Th17/Th22. We have shown that peripheral blood cells of DTC patients produce significantly higher concentrations of Th2/Th9 cytokines (IL-5, IL-13 and IL-9) than control subjects. The 131-I therapy led to reduced secretion of Th2 cytokines (IL-4, IL-5 and IL-13). Despite this, the calculated cytokine ratios (Th1/Th2) in DTC patients before and 7 days after 131-I therapy were not different from those in healthy subjects. DTC patients have significantly higher concentrations of Th2/Th9 cytokines (IL-5, IL-13 and IL-9) than control subjects. There is no influence of hypothyroidism or stage of disease on cytokine production in DTC patients before 131-I therapy. The radioactive 131-I therapy leads to reduced secretion of Th2 cytokines (IL-4, IL-5 and IL-13). Additional studies are needed to determine the significance of these findings.
