Hierarchical Self-Assembly and Conformation of Tb Double-Decker Molecular Magnets: Experiment and Molecular Dynamics

Nanostructures, fabricated by locating molecular building blocks in well-defined positions, for example, on a lattice, are ideal platforms for studying atomic-scale quantum effects. In this context, STM data obtained from self-assembled Bis(phthalocyaninato) Terbium (III) (TbPc2) single-molecule magnets on various substrates have raised questions about the conformation of the TbPc2 molecules within the lattice. In order to address this issue, molecular dynamics simulations were carried out on a 2D assembly of TbPc2 molecules. The calculations are in excellent agreement with the experiment, and thus improve our understanding of the self-assembly process. In particular, the calculated electron density of the molecular assembly compares well with STM contrast of self-assembled TbPc2 on Au(111), simultaneously providing the conformation of the two Pc ligands of the individual double-decker molecule. This approach proves valuable in the identification of the STM contrast of LnPc2 layers and could be used in similar cases where it is difficult to interpret the STM images of an assembly of molecular complexes.

N95 mask reuse in a major urban hospital: COVID-19 response process and procedure

BACKGROUND

The shortage of single-use N95 respirator masks (NRMs) during the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has prompted consideration of NRM recycling to extend limited stocks by healthcare providers and facilities.

AIM

To assess potential reuse via autoclaving of NRMs worn daily in a major urban Canadian hospital.

METHODS

NRM reusability was assessed following collection from volunteer staff after 2-8 h use, sterilization by autoclaving and PortaCount fit testing. A workflow was developed for reprocessing hundreds of NRMs daily.

FINDINGS

Used NRMs passed fit testing after autoclaving once, with 86% passing a second reuse/autoclave cycle. A separate cohort of used masks pre-warmed before autoclaving passed fit testing. To recycle 200-1000 NRMs daily, procedures for collection, sterilization and re-distribution were developed to minimize particle aerosolization risk during NRM handling, to reject NRM showing obvious wear, and to promote adoption by staff. NRM recovery ranged from 49% to 80% across 12 collection cycles.

CONCLUSION

Reuse of NRMs is feasible in major hospitals and other healthcare facilities. In sharp contrast to studies of unused NRMs passing fit testing after 10 autoclave cycles, we show that daily wear substantially reduces NRM fit, limiting reuse to a single cycle, but still increasing NRM stocks by ∼66%. Such reuse requires development of a comprehensive plan that includes communication across staffing levels, from front-line workers to hospital administration, to increase the collection, acceptance of and adherence to sterilization processes for NRM recovery.

Concept, design and fabrication of smart orthopedic implants

Extensive clinical experience has been built up using orthopaedic implants instrumented with strain gauges connected to a Wheatstone bridge by means of percutaneous leads. This research showed the medical relevance of the monitoring of the deformation of implants as a powerful tool to evaluate nursing and rehabilitation exercises, for tracing dangerous overloads and anticipating implant failure and also to observe the healing process. The IMPACT 3500 project focuses on the instrumentation of femoral implants with on board sensors: regular Benoist-Girard implants have been modified, to contain a 'sensing cell', and thoroughly tested in vitro and in vivo. The implant deformations are measured with resistive strain gauges, and the signal is transferred to a personal computer for processing and display, via a hard wired connection, or via a telemetry system. Two fully implantable wireless designs, called Linkstrain and Sealstrain, are powered from the outside by magnetic induction. As Sealstrain contains the whole telemetric system in its cavity, the highest miniaturization was required; this seriously deteriorates the efficiency of the inductive power link.
