Exploring the transformative power of AI in art through a circular economy lens. A systematic literature review

Today, technology and sustainability are two strategic axes for the development of any industry. Art is no exception and embodies both principles. Artificial intelligence (AI) is driving the art world forwards with its applications and algorithms. Additionally, the circular economy (CE) is concerned with resources and the environment in this context. The objective of the present work is to provide an overview of the current state of research on the application of AI in the art world and an analysis of how CE principles are being incorporated, considering the interactions between AI and the CE. To this end, a systematic review of the literature is carried out in which 60 articles related to the subject are selected, analysed, and classified, highlighting the lines of research addressed. The assessment of the current state of research on the subject concludes with the four main axes of classification of works. The first line is related to AI generative content in art, addressing issues of content creation, image and painting, video, and theatre. The second line is related to AI applications for art industry production, considering the sustainability of the supply chain. The third line focuses on how the CE is being applied to art, while the fourth line focuses on other relevant aspects analysed, such as training and design. The topic is still incipient, mandating further research to study the full potential of AI and the CE in the world of art.

How Do We Measure Social Management in Non-profit Organizations? A Scale Design Based on the Once Case

One of the most important current challenges facing non-profit organizations (henceforth, NPOs) is to demonstrate that resources are being used properly to fulfill their missions. The development of control mechanisms to facilitate the measurement of social goal fulfillment has thus become a priority. In this context, transparency and good governance are configured as essential strategic elements to build trust with different stakeholders. In this work, we show the value provided by management indicators as they have become a necessary tool to confirm that the use of resources, internal processes and decisions within NPOs are carried out with the highest levels of efficiency and excellence. Only in this way can social credibility be achieved. The success of an NPO is inextricably linked to the support of donors, users, public administration and society as a whole. To achieve our research objective, we build a measurement scale based on the case of the Spanish National Organization for the Blind (ONCE), one of the largest Spanish NPOs. Based on ONCE’s experience, we propose a management indicator model that covers all social dimensions. The model is empirically validated to standardize the indicators for the ONCE and for serving as a reference for other entities.

Plastics and sustainable purchase decisions in a circular economy: The case of Dutch food industry

Every day, society’s concern over pollution caused by plastic waste grows greater. One of the most intensive sectors for the use of plastic is the food industry. Companies in this sector face the challenge of transitioning to a more sustainable and less intensive model of plastic use, respecting the principles established for a circular economy. Accordingly, one of the questions that industries tend to ask is whether sustainability will influence the consumer’s purchase decision. To respond to this, the factors that determine a consumer’s sustainable purchase decision in relation to the plastic and food industry have been analyzed in this paper. For this, a regression analysis was performed on a sample of Dutch consumers. The results show that the decision of purchase of the consumer of the Food Industry is conditioned by factors such as age, sustainable behavior, knowledge of the Circular economy and the perception of usefulness of plastic.

Prediction of the impact on air quality of the cities receiving cruise tourism: the case of the Port of Barcelona

The cruise tourism industry has experienced significant growth in recent years and has a very positive outlook for the future. However, its environmental impact requires a review of its sustainability, including the analysis of its social, economic and environmental balance, and the evaluation of its impact on port cities receiving cruise ships. The purpose of this document is twofold: First, to analyze the relationship between air quality, as an environmental variable, and the volume of cruise ships and passengers that visit a port with the aim of generating information. Secondly, it is intended to develop an index, based on the information already available that allows cities to predict the impact of this activity, so that decisions are made to alleviate these effects. Methods: The primary data taken monthly for the period 2006-2017, related to the level of emissions and the number of cruises and passengers, are used as a basis. A regression analysis is performed to determine the relationship between air pollution and the number of tourists coming from the cruise ships. As a contribution, the results show the influence of this type of tourism on environmental indicators. In addition, in an original way, a regression function is established that allows estimating the future impact of the cruise industry in the ports cities. So that, cities can prevent this type of environmental impact. This will make it easier for the cruise tourism industry to develop more sustainable models in the long term.
