Crystallization of Polymers under the Influence of an External Force Field

We simulated the crystallization and melting behavior of entangled polymer melts using molecular dynamics where each chain is subject to a force dipole acting on its ends. This mimics the deformation of chains in a flow field but represents a well-defined equilibrium system in the melt state. Under weak extension within the linear response of the chains, the mechanical work done on the system is about two orders of magnitude smaller as compared with the heat of fusion. As a consequence, thermodynamic and simple arguments following the secondary nucleation model predict only small changes of the crystalline phase. By contrast, an increase of the stem length up to a factor of two is observed in our simulations. On the other hand, the lamellar thickening induced by the external force is proportional to the increase of the entanglement length in the melt prior to crystallization as measured by the primitive path method. While the mechanical work done on the system is only a small perturbation for thermodynamics of polymer crystallization, the change of the primitive path is large. This suggests that a strong increase in the lamellar thickness induced, by external deformation, a topological rather than a thermodynamic origin.

Dissolution of cellulose in ionic liquids: an ab initio molecular dynamics simulation study

Interactions determining the dissolution of a monomer of β-cellulose, i.e., cellobiose in a room temperature ionic liquid, [Emim][OAc], have been studied using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Although anions are the predominant species in the first coordination shell of cellobiose, cations too are present to a minor extent around it. The presence of low concentration of water in the solution does not significantly alter the nature of the coordination environment of cellobiose. All intra-molecular hydrogen bonds of anti-syn cellobiose are replaced by inter-molecular hydrogen bonds formed with the anions, whereas the anti-anti conformer retains an intramolecular hydrogen bond.

Dissolution of cellulose in room temperature ionic liquids: anion dependence

The dissolution of cellulosic biomass in room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) is studied through free energy calculations of its monomer, viz., cellobiose, within a molecular dynamics simulation approach. The solvation free energy (SFE) of cellobiose in ionic liquids containing any of seven different anions has been calculated. The ranking of these liquids based on SFE compares well with experimental data on the solubility of cellulose. The dissolution is shown to be enthalpically dominated, which is correlated with the strength of intermolecular hydrogen bonding between cellobiose and the anions of the IL. Large entropic changes upon solvation in [CF3SO3](-) and [OAc](-) based ionic liquids have been explained in terms of the solvent-aided conformational flexibility of cellobiose.

Effect of cation symmetry on the organization of ionic liquids near a charged mica surface

Atomistic molecular dynamics simulations have been carried out to understand the effect of the symmetry of cations on the microscopic organization of ionic liquids near a charged mica surface. Ionic liquids with a 1,3-alkylimidazolium ([C(n)C(m)im](+)) cation and a bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([NTf2](-)) anion were investigated. Apart from symmetry, the length of the alkyl group attached to the cation is found to crucially determine the ion structure near the solid surface. In the first adsorbed layer, the ring planes of cations with shorter alkyl groups (less than four carbon atoms) are oriented either parallel or perpendicular to the surface. However, cations with longer alkyl tails are exclusively observed to have their ring planes parallel to the mica surface. The alkyl groups too show a similar dependence of their orientation on the tail length. Further, symmetric cations with alkyl groups of intermediate length are more highly structured at the interface than their asymmetric counterparts.
